  1. Fortnite Festival is Bringing Sabrina Carpenter Next Season, It’s Claimed Fortnite Festival is Bringing Sabrina Carpenter Next Season, It’s Claimed · · January 28, 2025 According to reliable insiders, Fortnite Festival’s next Season will have Sabrina Carpenter at the centre stage. Per Shpeshal Nick (via ShiinaBR), Fortnite Festival’s next Season will seemingly focus on the artist behind some of the most popular tunes of 2024, Sabrina Carpenter. If the ‘Espresso’ singer turns out to be the icon of the Fortnite Festival Season 8, then players can expect a bunch of new cosmetics and jam tracks inspired by the American artist. Like previous Icons, the Fortnite Festival could receive a music pass with a Sabrina Carpenter skin, new emotes, and cosmetics. The popular singer might also be featured in the Fortnite Item shop as a bundle with exclusive items. However, it is hard to confirm anything without an official announcement. Sabrina Carpenter has already collaborated with Fortnite in August 2024, where players received a couple of emotes and jam tracks featuring popular songs from the artist but no skins. So it isn’t very farfetched to expect Sabrina Carpenter to be the main attraction of Fortnite Festival’s next Season. In other news, the same duo responsible for this leak claimed that Fortnite would receive Red Hulk, Falcon and Superman Skins. OpTic Methodz advised young COD players to “go play Fortnite”. What do you think about Sabrina Carpenter as the next Icon for the Fortnite Festival? Let us know in the comments below or on our community forum! 2. Trump administration offering buyouts to government workers unwilling to return to office Trump administration offering buyouts to government workers unwilling to return to office The White House expects up to 10% of federal employees to quit in a buyout program meant to end work-from-home practices, senior administration officials told CBS News. A government-wide email President Trump’s aides planned to send Tuesday will say employees have about a week to decide whether to participate in a “deferred resignation program.” It was to begin Tuesday for all federal employees and end Feb. 6. Only about 6% of federal employees work full-time in office, administration officials said. “If you resign under this program, you will retain all pay and benefits regardless of your daily workload and will be exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements until September 30, 2025 (or earlier if you choose to accelerate your resignation for any reason),” the emails states. This is a developing story and will be updated. Jennifer Jacobs Jennifer Jacobs is a senior White House reporter at CBS News. 5. No, World Of Warcraft Is Not Coming To Game Pass No, World Of Warcraft Is Not Coming To Game Pass Microsoft has clarified that World of Warcraft is not coming to Xbox Game Pass. This comes after people received an email showing a World of Warcraft ad with the words “Join Game Pass,” leading them to believe that the game would be coming to the subscription service. The email’s subject even said, “Play Call of Duty, Diablo IV, World of Warcraft, and more of Activision’s biggest hits with Game Pass!” The World of Warcraft portion of the email also featured an icon suggesting an Xbox console release of the game was coming. Microsoft has now issued a statement attributing all of this to a simple error. “This was a mistake on our end, sorry for the confusion,” said the official Game Pass Twitter account. “Blizzard’s World of Warcraft was accidentally included in a game pass email even though it’s not available with the service – a correction email will be sent to those who got the original email soon.” The email that some people received today In response to the statement, a number of people have requested that World of Warcraft be added to Xbox Game Pass. One person said, “The only mistake is that it’s not on Game Pass and should be.” Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard back in 2023 and has added tons of games in the latter’s back catalogue to Game Pass. However, World of Warcraft is not one of them, no doubt due to its business model revolving around a monthly subscription. As for a console version of WoW, there are no announced plans. However, in 2023, its executive producer said that Activision Blizzard has at least thought about it post-acquisition. In other World of Warcraft news, the Karazhan Crypts is finally playable today as a dungeon. It’s a new piece of endgame content that’s part of the game’s more experimental Season of Discovery servers. 6. LA fires made worse by climate change, say scientists LA fires made worse by climate change, say scientists Getty Images Climate change was a major factor behind the hot, dry weather that gave rise to the devastating LA fires, a scientific study has confirmed. It made those weather conditions about 35% more likely, according to World Weather Attribution – globally recognised for their studies linking extreme weather to climate change. The authors noted that the LA wildfire season is getting longer while the rains that normally put out the blazes have reduced. The scientists highlight that these wildfires are highly complex with multiple factors playing a role, but they are confident that a warming climate is making LA more prone to intense fire events. “Climate change increased the risk of the devastating LA wildfires,” said Dr Clair Barnes, from Imperial College London, the study’s lead author. “Drought conditions are more frequently pushing into winter, increasing the chance a fire will break out during strong Santa Ana winds that can turn small ignitions into deadly infernos.” The Santa Ana winds are strong and gusty east or north-easterly winds that blow from inland California towards the coast. Around 30 people have died and more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed in the fast-spreading, destructive fires that broke out in early January. This new study looks at what are termed the fire-prone conditions that can lead to dangerous conflagrations. It’s been carried out by a team of researchers from World Weather Attribution (WWA), a global group that publishes rapid analyses of climate-related weather events. They use climate models to simulate how the warming that has occurred since the middle of the 19th century is influencing heatwaves, droughts, floods and fires. The widespread burning of coal, oil and gas in the wake of the industrial revolution has driven billions of tonnes of planet-warming gases into the atmosphere. Acting like a blanket, these gases have driven up temperatures by around 1.2C since then. By using climate models and statistical methods along with real world observations, the WWA group have been able to show how much of an influence climate warming has had on extreme events. In the case of the LA fires, they found that the hot, dry conditions that drove them are expected to occur once every 17 years. This is an increase in likelihood of around 35% compared to a world that hadn’t experienced warming. “We actually see that the models show very much the same results that the [real world] observations have,” said Dr Friederike Otto, the head of World Weather Attribution. “So there, in this combined index, we are quite confident about the result… we have actually a signal that we can say that we definitely can attribute that, also quantitatively.” The researchers also examined other important variables that can lead to wildfire including the length of the fire season. By analysing weather observations, the scientists found that this has increased by around 23 days since the world began warming, around 1850. The team say that this means the dry conditions and the Santa Ana winds that are crucial for the spread of fires, are increasingly overlapping. Getty Images Another key element is drought. Dry conditions in the LA area over the October to December ******* are now about 2.4 times more likely than before humans starting using fossil fuels on a large scale. The researchers are clear that climate change increased the probability of the hot, dry conditions that gave rise to the fires. However, the authors are more cautious about the link between rising temperatures and the longer fire season or decreased rainfall, saying that the models did not show a significant connection. Despite these reservations, the conclusion is that a warmer world increased the chances of the devastating wildfires occurring – as more fossil fuels continue to be burnt, those chances will continue to rise. “Overall the paper finds that climate change has made the Los Angeles fires more likely despite some statistical uncertainty,” said Prof Gabi Hegerl, from the University of Edinburgh, who was not part of the study team. “This is a carefully researched result that should be taken seriously,” she said in a statement. Getty Images The new work builds on research that was published while the fires were still burning fiercely. That study linked the wildfires to what’s termed “climate whiplash.” The idea is that very wet years are followed almost immediately by very dry ones, which increases the risk of fires. This is what happened in LA, when two wet winters were followed by an extremely dry autumn and winter this year – the wet weather promoted the growth of grass and shrubs that became the fuel for the fires that took off in the gusting Santa Ana winds. San Francisco tech founder and wife arrested for allegedly defrauding investors out of millions San Francisco tech founder and wife arrested for allegedly defrauding investors out of millions Gamers at the Qualcomm E3 Snapdragon Gaming World Record Challenge in 2012 hosted by GameOn in Los Angeles. GameOn would later be known as ON Platform, whose founder was arrested on fraud charges. (Eric Reed / Associated Press) San Francisco tech founder Alex Beckman and his wife, Valerie Lau, were arrested last week after prosecutors accused the couple of defrauding investors out of more than $60 million. Beckman and Lau are accused of crimes including securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, aggravated identity theft and obstruction of justice, according to a complaint filed last week in the San Francisco U.S. District Court. Lau worked as an attorney for Beckman’s startup, ON Platform, formerly known as GameOn, from at least 2016 to 2024. Beckman’s company makes artificial intelligence software for customers, including retail brands and professional sports leagues. The couple allegedly defrauded investors in ON Platform by faking bank records and impersonating business contacts, according to the complaint. In one instance, when an investor wanted to see a bank statement, Lau allegedly planted a fake statement showing a $13-million account balance and placed it at the bank so that when Beckman and the investor arrived they would see the balance, prosecutors said. The account’s real balance was $25.93, after Beckman allegedly wired $320,000 to a relative. Read more: Founder of company that created LAUSD chatbot charged with fraud The alleged scheme took place between September 2018 and July 2024; the couple allegedly spent more than $4 million of investor funds on personal expenses, including paying for private schools, their wedding venue and for homes in San Francisco, according to a U.S. attorney’s office news release. Beckman also allegedly used the names of at least seven people without their permission in order to distribute fraudulent financial information, prosecutors said. “The Bay Area is home to incredible innovation and hard-working entrepreneurs, but innovation cannot grow through fraud. Schemes like the ones that defendants are charged with threaten our financial markets and cheat investors,” First Assistant U.S. Atty. Patrick D. Robbins said in a statement. “This indictment should serve as a reminder that we will investigate and hold fraudsters accountable.” Representatives for Beckman and Lau didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. 10. New animated Spider-Man series renewed for Season 2 and 3 New animated Spider-Man series renewed for Season 2 and 3 Disney wants more Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man despite the show not even out yet. The series is right around the corner, though. Marvel Studios head of streaming, television, and animation Brad Winderbaum shared on The Movie Podcast (via IGN) that Season 2 already has its scripts complete and half of its animated storyboards finalized. Meanwhile, also noting that Season 3 is a go, too. “I’ve fallen so head over heels in love with these characters and I’ve now read all of the scripts for Season 2; we’re halfway through the animatics,” Winderbaum said. “What [lead writer and executive producer Jeff Trammell] is building brick by brick in this show starts to pay off. And you feel it in Season 1. You grow connected to these characters so that when everything starts to lock into place and pay off by the end of the season. I feel it in my very soul and it just gets deeper and deeper in subsequent seasons.” While Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man does have a greenlight for Season 3, Winderbaum still needs to actually hear the pitch from Trammell and what the end-goals are. Meanwhile, he also remained tight-lipped about what we can expect in coming seasons. The show itself follows Peter Parker as a freshman just getting his powers. It’s unclear what timeframe we’ll see in following seasons. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man hits Disney Plus on January 29. 11. Sora rival Pika just dropped a new video AI model, and I can’t believe how good it is Sora rival Pika just dropped a new video AI model, and I can’t believe how good it is Pika just released the Pika 2.1 AI video creator with features like Scene Ingredients and lifelike motion control. Features like dynamic lighting and style transfer streamline cinema production. Compared to Sora, Pika 2.1 is aimed at any skill level. AI video creator Pika Labs is keen to stand out from possible competitors like OpenAI and Sora, and its newest model adds some real power to that effort. Pika 2.1 adds a whole suite of new and upgraded features just a little over a month after Pika 2.0 dropped. The new model offers users tools to make animation smoother, lighting more dramatic, and physics more realistic. It’s not quite Pixar, but it’s closer than you might first imagine, and it’s still usable for those who watch YouTube tutorials for editing family album videos. The Scene Ingredients feature introduced with Pika 2.0 is still the star of the new model, offering to incorporate people, objects, and locations lifted from photos you upload. Your living room becomes a starship bridge, and your dog can star in a romantic drama with a few clicks. However, the new Advanced Motion Control feature is where Pika 2.1 really flexes. Fluid and graceful animation is suddenly much more feasible, replacing earlier models’ more robotic, awkward motions. Ballerinas and gymnasts can star in your video without looking like straw-filled dummies. Hold onto your Pika 2.1 is dropping soon. – YouTube Watch On Thanks to the new Realistic Physics Simulation feature, all of the videos feel more like reality. Objects behave like they actually exist in the real world, meaning a character tossing a ball now results in an arc and bounce – just like Isaac Newton says it should. Though a somewhat subtle upgrade in some ways, it still changes your animation from feeling like a video game cutscene to more of a live-action performance. The new Dynamic Lighting Effects also lets you enhance those scenes with a real mood. Shadows deepen, highlights pop, and sunsets look like they were plucked straight out of a travel influencer’s reel. And if you’d rather have a much more stylized kind of cinema, the new Seamless Style Transfer feature lets you revamp your modern, realistic video into a neon-noir from the 1980s or a moving watercolor painting. Pika power Of course, Pika 2.1 isn’t entering an empty arena. It’s up against Sora and many others like Runway, Pollo, and Luma Labs’ Dream Machine. Sora has earned praise for its text-to-video capabilities, but is really mostly for professionals, not casual filmmakers. Runway has some impressive creations and multimodal input that can create videos from text, images, or existing video clips. Still, there is also a bit of a steep learning curve to unlock all of its features. Pika 2.1, meanwhile, pitches itself as a good tool for professional animators and weekend dabblers alike. That said, you will need a subscription to use Pika 2.1 and all the new features. Otherwise, you’ll only be able to use the Pika 1.5 model. That’s nothing to sneeze at, as Pika 1.5 offers a host of fun visual effects to entice you into signing up and accessing the latest Pika model. In a warning issued by email to “shipmates” on Friday, the Navy said DeepSeek’s AI was not to be used “in any capacity” due to “potential security and ethical concerns associated with the model’s origin and usage.” A spokesperson for the U.S. Navy confirmed the authenticity of the email and said it was in reference to the Department of the Navy’s Chief Information Officer’s generative AI policy. The announcement followed DeepSeek’s release of its powerful new reasoning AI model called R1, which rivals technology from OpenAI. The DeepSeek model is open source, meaning any AI developer can use it. The DeepSeek app has surged to the top of Apple’s App Store, dethroning OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and people in the industry have praised its performance and reasoning capabilities. DeepSeek’s pronouncements rocked the capital markets on Monday due to concerns that future AI products will require less-expensive infrastructure than Wall Street has assumed. DeepSeek said in late December that its large language model took only two months and less than $6 million to build despite the U.S. curbing chip exports to China three times in three years. That’s a tiny fraction of the amount spent by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. Shares of AI chipmakers Nvidia and Broadcom each dropped 17% on Monday, a route that wiped out a combined $800 billion in market cap. Those stocks led a 3.1% drop in the Nasdaq. The Navy’s warning landed days earlier. “We would like to bring to your attention a critical update regarding a new AI model called DeepSeek,” the email said. The memo said it’s “imperative” that team members do not use DeepSeek’s AI “for any work-related tasks or personal use.” The email was sent on Friday morning to the distribution list OpNav, which stands for Operational Navy, indicating it was an all-hands memo. The warning was based on an advisory from Naval Air Warcraft Center Division Cyber Workforce Manger. Carlos Barria | Reuters A federal judge on Tuesday paused until next week the implementation of a Trump administration order that would have frozen the issuance of existing federal grants and loans until agencies vetted them. Judge Loren AliKhan’s ruling during a hearing conducted on Zoom came just minutes before the freezing order was set to take effect at 5 p.m. ET. At stake are funds potentially worth trillions of dollars. AliKhan said her administrative stay would expire at 5 p.m. Monday unless she decides to grant a temporary restraining order as requested by plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit earlier in the day challenging the Trump administration’s action. The judge scheduled a hearing for Monday morning for arguments on the requested TRO in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The Department of Justice had objected to the administrative stay against the order, which is part of an effort by President Donald Trump to cut spending that does not comply with his efforts to purge “woke ideology” from government programs. AliKhan’s stay only affects the disbursement of government funds that already have been authorized, not money that was being sought. 17. Widespread snow on tap for Mass. Here’s how much to expect and when Widespread snow on tap for Mass. Here’s how much to expect and when A winter storm is expected to bring widespread snowfall to New England overnight, potentially impacting the Wednesday morning commute. Snow squalls were popping up in parts of western Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Tuesday morning, including at Ragged Mountain in Danbury. New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management warned motorists of possible white-out conditions during the commutes with gusts up to 35 mph. Snow squalls typically don’t produce much snow, but they can create dangerous conditions on the roads due to suddenly reduced visibility. In Massachusetts, the best chance for a snow squall will come through late Tuesday morning, according to Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear. A clipper system will approach the region on Tuesday night, bringing light snow into early Wednesday morning. Spear said it won’t be a major snowstorm, but Bay Staters can expect anywhere from a light dusting to about 3 inches of snow. Most of Massachusetts could see up to 3 inches of snow, while parts of the South Shore, South Coast, Cape Cod, and the Islands will see a coating to 1 inch of snow. The snow is expected to stick to the ground from midnight to 5 a.m. “The timing means this could cause some slowdowns for your Wednesday morning commute, so plan accordingly,” Spear said. When the snow moves out, temperatures will climb into the 40s. The Boston 25 Weather team is also keeping an eye on another weather system that could bring rain for the weekend. There’s still value for Nvidia despite DeepSeek threat, says strategist Jay Woods There’s still value for Nvidia despite DeepSeek threat, says strategist Jay Woods There’s more gains ahead for shares of Nvidia despite the emergence of AI startup DeepSeek, according to Jay Woods, chief global strategist of Freedom Capital Markets. Woods joined CNBC’s ” Power Lunch ” on Tuesday to share his take on the AI chipmaker. Here’s what he had to say during the segment’s “Three-Stock Lunch.” Nvidia Nvidia shares plunged 17% on Monday after ******** startup DeepSeek raised concerns over the amount of money big tech has been investing in AI models and data centers. The stock shed $600 billion in market capitalization, marking the biggest one-day loss for a U.S. company. But the stock made a comeback on Tuesday, ending the day with a 9% gain. Shares of Nvidia are still down 4% on the month but have risen 111% in the last twelve months. Woods said that the setup for traders was optimistic. “Long term, I still think it’s great. This story out of China with DeepSeek — we shot first, we’re asking questions now,” the strategist said. “I have more questions than answers. So I think this is a buying opportunity.” General Motors Despite posting a fourth-quarter earnings and revenue beat , shares of General Motors ended Tuesday with a 9% decline. Investors sent the stock lower as concerns grew around the automaker’s preparation for new changes under the second Trump administration, such as the impact of potential tariffs and policy changes on vehicle production and electric vehicle sales. The stock’s Tuesday decline now provides a good entry point for investors, according to Woods. “I think it’s an opportunity to buy the stock. The quarter was pretty solid. People were concerned about 25% tariffs that weren’t mentioned in their guidance” he said. “You buy here, you get out and embrace the 200-day moving average.” Shares of General Motors are currently on pace to end the month 6% lower, although the stock is still up 42% in the last twelve months. RTX Shares of RTX , formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, ended Tuesday nearly 3% higher on the back of better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. The aerospace and defense firm posted adjusted earnings of $1.54 per share on revenue of $21.62 billion, exceeding the $1.38 per share on $20.54 billion in revenue analysts had expected. Woods said that RTX’s rosy outlook makes the stock look attractive. The strategist added that the sector is strong, and RTX is currently outperforming competitor Lockheed Martin . “Trump wants this American Iron Dome, and guess who helped with the Israeli Iron Dome? Raytheon. So if this does come to pass, expect Raytheon to be okay,” Woods said. “The headwind there is DOGE. But technically, it’s breaking out. It has solid price action. I think it’s a great long-term buy-and-hold.” Shares of RTX are now up 11% in January and up 42% in the last 12 months. 21. Judge pauses Trump funding freeze order until Feb. 3 Judge pauses Trump funding freeze order until Feb. 3 U.S. President Donald Trump speaks on the day he signs documents as he issues executive orders and pardons for January 6 defendants in the Oval Office at the White House on Inauguration Day in Washington, U.S., Jan. 20, 2025. Carlos Barria | Reuters A federal judge on Tuesday paused until next week the implementation of a Trump administration order that would have frozen the issuance of federal grants and loans. Judge Loren AliKhan’s ruling during a hearing conducted on Zoom came just minutes before the freezing order was set to take effect at 5 p.m. ET. AliKhan said her administrative stay of the order would expire at 5 p.m. on Monday unless she decides to grant a temporary restraining order as requested by plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging the Trump administration’s action. The judge scheduled a hearing for Monday morning for arguments on the requested TRO in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The Department of Justice had objected to the administrative stay. 22. Why DeepSeek could bring ‘opportunities to monetize’ software Why DeepSeek could bring ‘opportunities to monetize’ software The arrival of ******** startup DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence (AI) model is shaking up the US tech sector, with a particular impact on software. Brent Thill, senior analyst at Jefferies, joins Julie Hyman on Market Domination to discuss the recent development, suggesting it could be a positive shift. “It’s really positive for software … effectively, as AI costs drop on infrastructure, it helps democratize and brings it to the software layer,” Thill explains. Thill emphasizes the importance of AI infrastructure, stating, “You don’t have artwork without walls; you can’t have AI apps without infrastructure,” he says. “We’re building all this infrastructure to then hang all the AI apps on top, and so what’s happening now is we’re getting proof that we’re getting more efficient, we’re effectively adding new capabilities to software, and that’s going to help bring more opportunities to monetize on the software layer.” Despite some initial skepticism, Thill believes the long-term shift from infrastructure to software will unlock new opportunities for growth and monetization in the industry.
