Shares of this iconic American company are breaking out, according to the charts
Shares of this iconic American company are breaking out, according to the charts
Shares of Coca-Cola (KO) shed about 17% of their value following a September 2024 high around $73. After making a lower low into January, the strength of the downtrend has lessened, with improvements in price momentum confirming a likely bottoming phase. Our multiple time frame analysis suggests an upside breakout above resistance around $65 could propel KO back toward 2024 highs. When a stock is an established downtrend, we are always looking for signs of a potential upside reversal. One of the most common bottoming patterns is called a “bullish momentum divergence”, where price is making new lows but the RSI is making higher lows at the same time. The daily chart of KO shows a clear bullish momentum divergence using the price lows in November 2024 and January 2025, as the RSI is sloping higher during this *******. This divergence implies that the selling pressure is beginning to alleviate, and a potential bottom could be imminent. Now that this early warning system has fired, what would confirm an upside breakout? I’m immediately drawn to the 200-day moving average around $65.20, which lines up quite well with the November swing high at $65. If KO could push above this resistance level, that could represent a completion of the bottoming phase and the beginning of a new bullish trend. We can confirm this technical structure using Fibonacci retracements, using the September 2024 high and the low from earlier in January: Using this framework, we can see the 38.2% retracement level sits around $65.50, creating a “confluence of support” along with the November swing high and the 200-day moving average. This provides further confirmation that a break above $65.00-65.50 would represent a likely new bullish phase for Coca Cola. One caveat to this bullish thesis would be the relatively anemic volume that KO has shown over the last three months. The bottom panel on the daily chart shows the Chaikin Money Flow, an indicator that tracks the trends in volume by weighting each day’s volume reading by the strength of the daily price action. We would need to see the CMF indicator push above the zero level on any breakout, suggesting an influx of buyers pushing KO above resistance. The weekly chart provides more of a long-term perspective on how the recent pullback relates to previous downdrafts for Coca Cola: We’re using the weekly PPO indicator to identify pullbacks that rotated back to a bullish trend phase. The thick green lines indicate a strong buy signal, where the PPO indicator crossed over the signal line well below the zero level. Thin green lines represent a weaker buy signal, where the PPO indicator buy signal occurred at or above the zero level. Note how the price action after the strong buy signals usually led to strong impulse moves to the upside, and the weaker buy signals often served as continuation alerts, representing additional upside after the first buy signal. The price action in January has created conditions very similar to previous strong buy signals, as the PPO indicator is very close to signaling a new uptrend phase for KO. We can also see that the PPO histogram is trending higher, an early warning sign that has fired before every strong buy signal in the last seven years. There’s no denying that Coca Coca and other consumer staples names have struggled to keep pace with high flying growth stocks over the last 12 months. But a review of the charts of this global beverage giant suggest a ******* of outperformance may be just around the corner. -David Keller, CMT marketmisbehavior.com DISCLOSURES: (None) All opinions expressed by the CNBC Pro contributors are solely their opinions and do not reflect the opinions of CNBC, NBC UNIVERSAL, their parent company or affiliates, and may have been previously disseminated by them on television, radio, internet or another medium. President Blames D.E.I. and Biden for ****** Under Trump’s Watch
President Blames D.E.I. and Biden for ****** Under Trump’s Watch
President Trump blamed diversity requirements at the Federal Aviation Administration and his two Democratic predecessors for the midair collision over the Potomac River on Wednesday night, saying that standards for air traffic controllers had been too lax.
Mr. Trump cited no evidence, and even admitted when pressed that the investigation had only just begun.
Moments later, he blamed the pilots of the Army helicopter that appeared to fly into a passenger jet that was on final approach to Reagan National Airport, across the river from the capital.
Mr. Trump went back and forth between blaming diversity goals that he said were created by President Barack Obama and President Joseph R. Biden Jr., and then saying that an investigation was necessary.
His instant focus on diversity reflected his instinct to immediately frame major events through his political or ideological lens, whether the facts fit or not.
It is something he has done before: After a terrorist attack in New Orleans a month ago, he blamed ******** immigration, even though the attacker was a U.S. citizen born in Texas.
When asked how he could say that diversity hiring was to blame for the ****** even though basic facts about the midair collision were still being sought by investigators, he said, “Because I have common sense.”
“For some jobs, we need the highest level of genius,” he said.
Of the F.A.A. under Mr. Obama, Mr. Trump said: “They actually came out with a directive, too white.”
An audio recording of the air traffic controllers’ warnings to the helicopter just before the ****** indicated that a controller first warned the helicopter to look for a Canadair Regional Jet, and then told the helicopter pilot to go behind the jet as it was landing. That exchange will be part of the investigation.
Mr. Trump appeared in the White House briefing room with Vice President JD Vance; the newly sworn-in transportation secretary, Sean Duffy; and the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth. All three men began their comments by praising Mr. Trump’s leadership and repeating that they would eliminate diversity requirements and focus on competence.
Mr. Trump named a new acting head of the Federal Aviation Administration during the news conference; none had been appointed by him until Thursday. The appointee did not speak at the news conference, nor did the head of the National Transportation Safety Board, who was also in the room.

The Video Game History Foundation’s digital library is now publicly available in early access
The Video Game History Foundation’s digital library is now publicly available in early access
The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has now made its digital library system available to the public, as promised last week.
Available in early access form, the library is available to browse on the VGHF website (but is currently suffering timeout errors due to demand).
The library currently offers more than 30,000 curated files (with “lots more to come”), as well as more than 1,500 out-of-print magazines, which are fully text searchable.
According to the VGHF, the early access version of the library has launched with a number of highlights, including:
“Guidebooks and ephemera” from video game events, including the first 12 years of E3
An international collection of FromSoftware promotional materials (“with a blessing from FromSoftware to donate them to the library”)
100 CD-ROMs of artwork and press releases from GamePro magazine’s archives
More than 100 hours of footage from the making of the Myst series
The ‘Mark Flitman papers’, a “treasure trove” of documents kept by Flitman from his time working at Konami, Acclaim, Atari and others
“After years of collecting, cataloging, and digitizing video game history materials, the VGHF is finally opening the virtual doors to its library – wherever you are,” the Foundation said in a statement last week.
The VGHF was set up in 2017 by game preservationist and historian Frank Cifaldi. Since then, it’s been building an extensive collection of video game related material, with the aim being to catalogue, digitise and preserve the history of video games.
The non-profit foundation relies on donations to build its archives. “Thanks to your support, we’ve built a powerful tool for video game history research,” it said last week. “We can’t wait for you to get your first look at what we’ve been up to.”

With Silent Hill 2 Remake’s Success, Konami Needs to Get a Clue and Revive Kojima’s Silent Hills
With Silent Hill 2 Remake’s Success, Konami Needs to Get a Clue and Revive Kojima’s Silent Hills
VGChartz’s Lee Mehr: “As game scripts expand in size and the technology to capture performances improves, blockbuster game companies are under tremendous pressure to get the right fit for a leading role. In some cases, said actor essentially becomes the face of that franchise; their mug may be digitally altered or cropped in select ways, but they’re – more or less – in the same spot as a film actor at this point. As a result, there’s also a keener interest in how those performers sound if they’re replacing somebody else.
Perhaps the most glaring example of that was Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake. Alongside a bevy of other gameplay & story alterations, Luke Roberts replacing Guy Cihi’s original James Sunderland was a major point of distress for long-time fans before release. Sure, Cihi wasn’t a trained actor at the time (and it shows), but he carried a type of unique charm that meshed perfectly with the game’s strange world. A similar situation was Troy Baker assuming the mantle of Indiana Jones. How similar could he actually sound to a younger Harrison Ford? Judging by the collective staff & community acclaim, both of them fared quite well, and so too did the others who made up our final five.”

Trump funding freeze is existential threat: Morehouse College president
Trump funding freeze is existential threat: Morehouse College president
Morehouse College President David Thomas speaks during Morehouse College’s graduation ceremony, before US President Joe Biden delivers his commencement address, in Atlanta, Georgia on May 19, 2024.

David Thomas, the president of Morehouse College, said his office fielded a surge of calls this week from worried students and their families concerned the Trump Administration’s “federal funding freeze” would directly impact college access.
The sudden scramble was “perhaps only rivaled by what happened in March of 2020 when we realized that the Covid pandemic was truly a threat,” Thomas told CNBC. He became president of Morehouse, one of the country’s top historically ****** colleges and universities, or HBCUs, in 2018.
This freeze on federal aid “would create another existential threat as great as the pandemic,” he said.
More from Personal Finance: White House freeze on federal aid will not affect student loans Consumer protection agencies at risk in Trump’s second term How this DC-area high school is trying to close the wealth gap
Thomas’ comments come amid ongoing confusion about how a freeze on federal grants and loans could potentially impact students and schools.
A Jan. 27 memo issued by the Office of Management and Budget, which would affect billions of dollars in aid, said the pause on federal grants and loans “does not include assistance provided directly to individuals.”
Although the memo was later rescinded, the White House said a “federal funding freeze” remains in “full force and effect.” It is currently on hold amid legal challenges.
Thomas, who is also on the Board of Trustees at Yale University, said college leaders across the country have spent the better part of the week focused on “the consequences of this action.” Morehouse immediately initiated a hiring freeze in preparation for a potentially significant financial disruption.
“All of the institutions are still in limbo,” he said.
What college aid may be affected
At Morehouse College, about 40% of the student body relies on Federal Pell Grants, a type of federal aid available to low-income families.
Following the memo’s release, the Education Department announced that the freeze would not affect student loans or Pell Grants.
“The temporary pause does not impact Title I, IDEA, or other formula grants, nor does it apply to Federal Pell Grants and Direct Loans under Title IV [of the Higher Education Act],” Education Department spokesperson Madi Biedermann said in a statement.
In addition to the federal financial aid programs that fall under Title IV, Title I provides financial assistance to school districts with children from low-income families. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA, provides funding for students with disabilities.
The funding pause “only applies to discretionary grants at the Department of Education,” Biedermann said. “These will be reviewed by Department leadership for alignment with Trump Administration priorities.”
But questions remain about other aid for college.
The freeze could affect federal work-study programs and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, which are provided in bulk to colleges to provide to students, according to Kalman Chany, a financial aid consultant and author of The Princeton Review’s “Paying for College.”
The disruption to federally backed research funding also poses a threat to college programs and staff.
‘Lots of reasons to still be concerned’
“There are lots of reasons to still be concerned,” said Jonathan Fansmith, a senior vice president at the American Council on Education.
“The administration has made it clear the executive orders will have implications for a huge range of existing awards and grants,” he said. “Those have implications for campuses and there is no more clarity in that regard than there was before.”
At Morehouse, “a huge portion of our faculty is supported by grants,” Thomas said. “If we can’t run the college, colleges like ours will probably be forced to drastically shrink themselves or close.”
Morehouse, located in Atlanta and founded in 1867, has more than 2,200 students.

The 2024 Google Nest Learning Thermostat is $40 off right now
The 2024 Google Nest Learning Thermostat is $40 off right now
Many of us in the northern hemisphere are contending with the harsh realities of winter and while the weather outside is often awful, at least we can try to be more comfortable when we’re home. A smart thermostat can prove useful on that front as it can optimize the conditions in your home, whether you’re there or away. The is a popular model, and the latest iteration is on *****. It can now be yours for $240, which is $40 off the regular price.
The thermostat actually dropped to a slightly lower price of $230 during the holidays. Still, a 14 percent discount is nothing to sniff at — especially if the device can help to significantly reduce your energy bills.
Google
The latest model of the Google Nest Learning Thermostat is on *****. At $240, it’s $40 off. The device could help you save significantly on your energy bills.
$240 at Amazon
Google claims that the delivers more accurate readings thanks to the help of AI. The device can offer suggestions on how to lower your energy usage though, as you might expect, it can automatically adjust settings in your home based on factors like the ambient temperature.
To help measure that, the thermostat comes with a wireless temperature sensor that is said to run for up to three years before a battery replacement is needed. Extra sensors are available to purchase separately — three for $100 or $36.45 for one (usually $40, but that’s on ***** too). You can connect as many as six to a single Nest Learning Thermostat and placing them around your domicile.
The latest thermostat is more customizable than its predecessors as it has several smartwatch-style faces. You might change the colors or make it appear more like a digital clock. The display is 60 percent larger this time too. In addition, the Nest Thermostat uses integrated Soli radar sensors to determine how close you are to it and automatically adjust the user interface. For instance, as you move back from the display, the thermostat will increase the font size to make text more legible.

RTX 50-series paper launch saw RTX 5090, RTX 5080 fly off the shelves — Micro Center, Best Buy, and Newegg are all out of stock
RTX 50-series paper launch saw RTX 5090, RTX 5080 fly off the shelves — Micro Center, Best Buy, and Newegg are all out of stock
Slept in? There’s no point in visiting the nearest Micro Center as all RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, two of the best graphics cards, are sold out within hours of launch. If you need to score a GPU on day one, be ready to pay through the nose since scalpers are charging 2x-3x more than MSRP. Supply-chain rumors and inventory woes were clear indicators of a chaotic launch day, but all things considered, the limited supply, or lack thereof, suggests this is no more than a paper launch.
We heard several weeks back that the retail supply of the RTX 5090 would be extremely tight, with many stores likely to receive only a couple of cards. That has proven to be the case.
Retailers like Micro Center, Newegg, and Best Buy are all out of stock. Even custom models that cost up to 40% higher than MSRP have also been snapped up by enthusiasts. The only practical way to get a Blackwell card right now is to buy a pre-built PC. A handful of pre-builts equipped with Nvidia’s RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are available. Still, you’d be paying for the entire system and a significant markup compared to assembling an equivalent build yourself.
All NVIDIA 5090 and 5080 GPUs are sold out, please check back regularly for restocks! pic.twitter.com/IjY2R7lOmAJanuary 30, 2025
Users at r/Microcenter have been up all night, sharing their experiences and the inventory at each Microcenter outlet. Per a compiled spreadsheet (First image in the gallery below) shared by a user at r/Nvidia, 68% of the listed outlets had less than 10 RTX 5090s in stock.
Note that this list is prone to errors, so it shouldn’t be considered definitive. Still, that’s an absurdly low amount for such a sought-after product, which explains why enthusiasts or scalpers were camping days before launch. The second image in the gallery captures the frenzy in Sharonville, where a crowd of campers is competing for, reportedly, just four RTX 5090s.
The situation overseas is no better. In Japan (third image), customers were seen hopping over the fence of a neighboring kindergarten to secure their next GPU. The Japanese retailer resorted to a lottery-like system to prevent scalping. Adding insult to injury, the lottery ended before attendees arrived, fueling further frustration and chaos.
Likewise, SET news reports that Taiwan has a limited supply of just 84 RTX 5090 and 340 RTX 5080 units nationwide. Several ******** customers have joined the ******, intending to resell the GPUs at double the price within China.
Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.
Ultimately, each GB202/203 (RTX 5090/5080) chip represents a lost opportunity to manufacture a data-center GB200 (B100/B200) GPU, as both rely on the same wafers. Thus, Nvidia is incentivized to push more AI accelerators out, even if it means fewer consumer GPUs. For context, Q3 earnings show that 88% of Nvidia’s total revenue is derived from its data center offerings, with gaming amounting to a measly 9%. Once RDNA 4 is in full swing, likely in March, we can expect Nvidia to amp up production or even sooner.

RFK Jr. struggles with Medicare, Medicaid basics in Senate hearings
RFK Jr. struggles with Medicare, Medicaid basics in Senate hearings
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., U.S. President Trump’s nominee to be secretary of Health and Human Services, testifies before a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., Jan. 30, 2025.
Nathan Howard | Reuters
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, appeared to be unfamiliar with fundamental elements of the Medicare and Medicaid programs during his second Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday.
“You want us to confirm you to be in charge of Medicare, but it appears that you don’t know the basics of this program,” said Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, after Kennedy struggled to answer a series of questions about Medicare before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
If confirmed, Kennedy will lead a $1.7 trillion agency that oversees a slew of federal health agencies. That includes the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which manages government-funded health care for millions of Americans, including seniors, disabled people and lower-income patients who rely on Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act’s markets.
Kennedy, 71, stumbled when answering questions about Medicare and Medicaid during both of his confirmation hearings this week. He appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance on Wednesday.
Oh Thursday, Hassan, who sits on both panels, asked Kennedy to explain what each part of Medicare is. But he struggled to identify and explain the fundamental aspects of the program, which provides coverage to older and disabled Americans.
When asked what Medicare Part A is for, Kennedy said it is “mainly for primary care or physicians.” Hassan clarified that it is coverage for seniors who receive inpatient care at hospitals.
Kennedy, when asked what Medicare Part B is, said it is “for physicians and doctors.” Part B is coverage for a range of medical services such as doctor visits, outpatient care, home health, certain medical supplies and preventive services.
When asked what Medicare Part C is for, Kennedy called it “the full menu of all the services – A, B, C and D.” Hassan noted that Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage, which are privately run plans contracted by Medicare. Those plans serve as an alternative to traditional Medicare plans.
Kennedy insisted that he “just explained the basics” of the program, but Hassan said she had to correct him on several things.
The New Hampshire senator also grilled Kennedy on his comments during the hearing on Wednesday, when he appeared to confuse Medicare with Medicaid.
That state-federal Medicaid program provides coverage to around 80 million Americans, including many low-income people. Republicans could target Medicaid, which costs the federal government more than $600 billion a year, for funding reductions this year to help pay for tax cuts.
Kennedy on Wednesday described Medicaid as “fully paid for” by the federal government, even though the program is funded by states as well.
On Thursday, Kennedy acknowledged that the program is jointly funded by the federal government and states, adding that he “misstated something” during the hearing on Wednesday.
At the end of that Wednesday hearing, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., the ranking member of the Finance Committee, said Kennedy was “unprepared” and suggested he didn’t seem to know the difference between Medicare and Medicaid.
”My colleagues have been seeing back-and-forth between Medicare and Medicaid, and it’s not clear which program you’re using when,” Wyden said.

Dominique Pelicot questioned over ******* and attempted ***** during 1990s
Dominique Pelicot questioned over ******* and attempted ***** during 1990s
Dominique Pelicot, who drugged and ****** his then wife Gisèle and recruited dozens of men to abuse her over almost a decade, has been questioned over two other attacks dating back to the 1990s.
The 72-year-old Frenchman, who was jailed for 20 years in December, is being investigated over the alleged ***** and ******* of property agent Sophie Narme in Paris on 4 December 1991. He denies the offence.
Investigators also quizzed him about the attempted ***** of another young property agent, known by the pseudonym Marion, in a suburb of the capital on 11 May 1999.
During his trial, Pelicot admitted to that offence after DNA evidence taken from blood found on Marion’s shoe was linked to him.
However, when he was asked about Sophie Narme during the same trial, he said he had “nothing to do” with the killing.
Investigators have previously pointed to similarities between the two cases.
In the 1991 *******, the victim was attacked by a man who used a false name to book a viewing for an apartment. Detectives say Pelicot did the same in 1999.
The smell of the anaesthetic drug ether was detected by police at the 1991 crime scene. Police say it was also used in the 1999 attack do subdue the victim.
The two cases were grouped together in September 2022 and have been investigated by a team which specialises in unsolved cases and serial crimes.
Pelicot was placed under formal investigation in October 2022 over both crimes.
The criminal case against Pelicot and the 49 other men accused of raping Gisèle lasted for three months and was France’s largest ever ***** trial.
By the time it ended, she had become a national figure and was met by crowds of hundreds of people chanting her name outside court.
Her decision to make the trial public has generated renewed conversations around *****, consent and gender violence in France.

These interstellar spaceship designs are wildly impractical
These interstellar spaceship designs are wildly impractical
While researching Starbound, my new book on the realities of interstellar travel, I was often surprised by the bizarre, over-the-top spacecraft designs that scientists have proposed in well-regarded academic journals. The best-known of these is Project Orion (1957-1965), whose central idea was to propel an interstellar spacecraft by detonating a series of thermonuclear bombs behind it, giving the craft a succession of powerful kicks through space.
Long after the project ended, Freeman Dyson, who worked on the project, said: “We really were a bit insane, thinking that all these things would work.” Amen.
Plenty of other wild starship designs have…

Pump Fun: Record Transaction Volume Signals Growing Interest in Meme Coins
Pump Fun: Record Transaction Volume Signals Growing Interest in Meme Coins
Meme coins are showing incredible growth at the beginning of 2025, and a clear confirmation of this was the record transaction volume on the Pump Fun platform, which exceeded the figures of such giants as and . Over the past 30 days, Pump Fun has generated $116.72 million in revenue, which exceeded the revenue of Solana ($116.46 million) and Ethereum ($107.64 million). In the last 24 hours alone, the trading volume on the platform amounted to $295.53 million, and fees reached $1.45 billion.
Pump Fun, the largest platform for launching meme coins has registered the launch of more than 4.2 million meme tokens. In January, the platform broke its own records with a daily trading volume of $544 million, which coincided with the launch of the and tokens. These events caused a real explosion of activity on the platform: the number of meme coins named “Trump” grew from 3,300 to 6,800 tokens in just a few days.
Institutionals’ Inflow Into Meme Coins
Analysts note that active movement in the meme coin sector attracts the attention of not only retail investors but also large investment companies. The latter are actively filing applications with the SEC to launch exchange-traded funds (ETFs) related to cryptocurrencies, including meme coins. This underscores the growing potential of this market, which was previously considered speculative but is now becoming a strategic direction for institutional capital.
The market is seeing the transition of meme coins from simple speculative assets to instruments that are starting to play a more important role in the crypto economy, as said Nathan Dean, senior analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence.
The Impact of TRUMP Tokens on Pump Fun Records
The launch of TRUMP and MELANIA tokens in January became a catalyst for explosive growth on the Pump Fun platform. Ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, the platform recorded a weekly trading volume of $3.3 billion, which was an all-time high. This success again confirmed that political events can significantly affect the memecoin market.
At the same time, research by Dune Analytics showed that only 0.4% of the platform’s users made a profit of more than $10,000. This indicates a highly speculative nature of the market but also opens up opportunities for creating more sustainable investment models in meme coins.
Meme Coins on the Path to Structured Growth
Experts predict that by 2030, meme-coins will have matured and become an important part of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Joo compared their development to the art market, where value is formed thanks to unique stories and social context. Memecoins like and could play a major role in this transition, thanks to their active communities and support from decentralized finance platforms. According to CoinCodex analysts, PEPE value could rise to $0.000068 by February 2025, with an estimated growth of 234.69%. Technical indicators suggest a positive trend for the token, but the cryptocurrency market remains unpredictable.
If Pepe Coin continues to grow, this could also have a positive effect on other Pepe Frog-inspired tokens, such as Wall Street Pepe and Agent A.I. Such tokens often show multiple gains after listing on major exchanges. According to DWF Labs, the memecoin market has increased by 500% in 2024, reaching $120 billion in December. The share of investor interest in this sector has grown to 15%, which underscores its attractiveness even against the backdrop of a possible correction.

Roman Abramovich tax dodge must be probed, HMRC urged
Roman Abramovich tax dodge must be probed, HMRC urged

Sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich must be investigated over the £1bn he could owe, a group of MPs has urged HMRC.
In a letter to the tax authority, Joe Powell, a Labour MP who leads a Parliamentary group on fair taxation, refers to BBC reports raising questions about whether tax is due on offshore investments.
“Proper investigation of these matters is essential,” the letter said. HMRC said it was “committed to ensuring everyone pays the right tax under the law, regardless of wealth or status”.
Mr Abramovich’s lawyers have told the BBC he “always obtained independent expert professional tax and legal advice” and “acted in accordance with that advice”.
Leaked papers reveal investments from Mr Abramovich worth $6bn (£4.7bn) were routed through companies in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), but evidence seen by the BBC suggests they were managed from the ***, so should have been taxed there.
The BBC and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism have been examining the papers for over a year – thousands of files and emails from a Cyprus-based company that administered Mr Abramovich’s global empire.
The BBC and its media partners, including The Guardian, have been reporting on the leaked files since 2023 as part of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists’ Cyprus Confidential investigation.
Some of the money that funded Chelsea FC when Mr Abramovich owned it can be traced back to companies involved in the scheme, the BBC and its partners also found.
Mr Powell’s letter said these findings raise “serious questions about Mr Abramovich’s potential tax liabilities”
It called on HMRC “to investigate and, if appropriate, to reclaim any funds potentially owed by Roman Abramovich to the *** tax authorities” in reference to the findings from the BBC, TBIJ, and The Guardian.
“Given the scale of the sums involved, ensuring that any unpaid taxes are recovered is a matter of public interest—particularly at a time when funds are urgently needed for public services and to manage the national debt,” the letter added.
A HMRC spokesperson said it was “continuing to lead international efforts to improve global transparency”.
‘Broadest possible powers’
It is not unusual for businesses to legally avoid paying tax on their profits by making their investments from companies in tax havens. But the companies involved must be managed and controlled offshore where they are incorporated.
If an offshore company’s strategic decisions are being taken by someone in the ***, its profits could be taxed as if it were a *** company.
The leaked documents seen by the BBC show how the directors of the BVI investment companies handed sweeping powers over them to a friend of Mr Abramovich, Eugene Shvidler, who was living in the *** and gained British citizenship in 2010.
The BBC has seen “general power of attorney” documents dated between 2004 and 2008, that gave him the “broadest possible powers” and “full power to do everything and anything” to investment companies in the BVI.
Lawyers for Mr Shvidler said the BBC was basing its reporting on “confidential business documents that present an incomplete picture” and had “drawn strong and erroneous conclusions as to Mr Shvidler’s conduct”.
They said “the structure of investments” was “the subject of very careful and detailed tax planning, undertaken and advised on by leading tax advisors”.
Cyprus Confidential is international collaborative investigation launched in 2023 led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) into Cyprus firms provided corporate and financial services to associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime, based on documents from a corporate service provider originally obtained by the whistleblowing group Distributed Denial of Secrets.
Media partners include The Guardian, the investigative newsroom Paper Trail Media, the Italian newspaper L’Espresso, the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ).

Sean Duffy, Trump’s new transportation secretary, monitors plane ****** response in first week on the job
Sean Duffy, Trump’s new transportation secretary, monitors plane ****** response in first week on the job
Washington — Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy had been sworn in for only a few hours when the first major commercial plane ****** in the U.S. in more than a decade shocked the nation late Wednesday.
The Senate confirmed Duffy, President Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Transportation, on Tuesday with significant bipartisan support, and he was sworn in by Vice President JD Vance Wednesday afternoon. Later that night, an American Airlines regional plane collided in midair with an Army ****** Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
Here’s what to know about the new transportation secretary:
Who is Sean Duffy?
Duffy, 53, represented Wisconsin in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019. He previously served as the district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin.
After leaving Congress, he joined Fox News as a contributor and co-hosted a show on Fox Business, until Mr. Trump announced his selection for transportation secretary. He and his wife have nine children.
In his new job, Duffy has pledged to “usher in a golden age of transportation and travel.” Appearing before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee earlier this month, he stressed the importance of safety as he undertakes the role.

“In aviation, safety will remain a top priority,” Duffy said, noting that the country needs more air traffic controllers and pledging to work to modernize systems with cutting-edge technologies. He said he would work to restore confidence in Boeing “and to ensure that our skies are safe.”
Duffy pledged to “craft clear regulations which balances safety, innovation and cutting-edge technology, but always focused on safety.”
Responding to the D.C. plane ******
By Wednesday night, the new transportation secretary said he was on site at the Federal Aviation Administration headquarters and had directed the Transportation Department and FAA to support the National Transportation Safety Board in its response to the ******.
In the wee hours Thursday morning, Duffy joined with the D.C. mayor and emergency response officials at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to brief reporters on the collision.
Asked about how he was feeling in the aftermath of the ****** that occurred just hours after he assumed the role, Duffy said his focus was on those impacted.
“I’ve been the secretary for a little over a day, and the tragedy that we’re going to deal with with this recovery I think is touching everyone’s hearts,” Duffy said.
In another news conference later Thursday morning, Duffy assured the public that American airspace remains safe.
“I will tell you with complete confidence that we have the safest airspace in the world,” Duffy said.
Appearing alongside President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at a White House briefing, Duffy outlined the “whole of government response” to the ****** and committed to “get to the bottom of this investigation — not in three years, not in four years, but as quickly as possible.”
“What happened yesterday shouldn’t have happened. It should not have happened,” Duffy said. “And when Americans take off in airplanes, they should expect to land at their destination.”

First Mouse with Two Fathers Thrives into Adulthood, Marking New Scientific Milestone
First Mouse with Two Fathers Thrives into Adulthood, Marking New Scientific Milestone
A major development in stem cell science has been achieved with the creation of a ***-paternal mouse, marking a significant step in reproductive biology. Scientists have successfully engineered a mouse with two male biological parents, which managed to survive into adulthood. This research, conducted by a team of stem cell experts, has addressed longstanding barriers in unisexual mammalian reproduction by modifying specific imprinting genes. The findings, which could have implications for regenerative medicine, highlight the challenges and potential future applications of the technology.
Genetic Modifications Enable ***-Paternal Development
According to the study published in Cell Stem Cell, led by Wei Li of the ******** Academy of Sciences (CAS), the team focused on overcoming imprinting-related challenges that previously prevented embryos with same-sex genetic origins from developing fully. Modifications were made to 20 imprinting genes using techniques such as frameshift mutations, gene deletions, and regulatory region edits. These changes allowed some ***-paternal embryos to survive to birth and, in rare cases, reach adulthood.
Co-corresponding author Qi Zhou of CAS explained to phys.org, that imprinting genes have been identified as a key obstacle in unisexual reproduction. Despite previous attempts using ovarian organoids derived from male stem cells, imprinting abnormalities caused severe developmental defects. By directly editing these genes, the research team improved embryonic viability and the stability of pluripotent stem cells.
Survival and Reproductive Challenges Remain
As per reports, only 11.8 percent of the engineered embryos developed to birth, and those that survived exhibited developmental abnormalities, reduced lifespan, and sterility. Guan-Zheng Luo of Sun Yat-sen University, a co-corresponding author, stated that imprinting abnormalities have been confirmed as the primary factor preventing unisexual reproduction in mammals.
Despite the limitations, this approach has demonstrated the potential for refining stem cell-based therapies and improving cloning efficiency. Researchers plan to expand the study to larger mammals, though substantial challenges remain due to differences in imprinting gene patterns across species.

How sled dogs and pets respond when the clocks change
How sled dogs and pets respond when the clocks change
Victoria Gill
Science correspondent, BBC News
Victoria Gill/BBC
When the clocks went back an hour, this affected the sled dogs’ strict routine
If you have ever struggled with the sudden shift in routine imposed by the seasonal “springing forward” and “falling backward” of the clocks, spare a thought for the sled dogs of Ontario, Canada.
Researchers say the time shift is measurably unsettling for those working dogs, whose days are dictated by strict schedules.
When scientists from the University of Toronto put movement sensors on a group of ********* sled dogs, they saw that the animals were active and moving around almost exactly an hour early – the morning after the clocks went back.
In contrast, **** dogs of the same breeds as the working dogs showed no measurable effect – apparently resting peacefully during their extra hour in bed.
Ming Fei Li
The research team studied sled dogs at Haliburton Forest Wildlife Reserve in Ontario, Canada
“I wasn’t expecting any differences between the two groups [of dogs],” said Lavania Nagendran, one of the lead researchers.
“So it was interesting to see that the dogs were so aligned to their routine.”
The study, published in the journal PLoS One, is part of a wider project investigating the differences in behaviour between wolves and domestic dogs.
“Not all animals can just switch up their schedule based on human influences, [like changing the clocks]” said Ming Fei Li, the co-lead researcher.
She explained that she and her colleagues hoped to learn whether wolves are also able to adjust their activity patterns – and whether this flexibility evolved naturally in canines, or if it was imposed on dogs when we domesticated them.
Lauren Kawai
Raven, pictured here enjoying the Ontario snow, was one of 29 **** huskies and malamutes involve in the study.
Much of the research into the impact of changing the clocks – on health and sleep – is focused on humans. Previous studies have suggested that the time shift causes disrupted, or fragmented, sleep and that this can last up to a week. Research has even found an increase in fatal traffic accidents immediately after the clocks go back or forward.
This is the first study to investigate its effect in domestic dogs.
The researchers put their motion trackers on 25 sled dogs and 29 pets – all of which were in or near Ontario, in Canada.
For the sled dogs, the time change was a sudden shift in a strict daily routine. Prior to the clocks going back, handlers would arrive at their kennels at sunrise. The morning when the clocks went back, those sled dogs were up, active and moving around an hour before the handlers appeared.
Kimberly Byars
For most of those working dogs, however, the disruption lasted just a day. The following morning, the majority of the dogs’ activity again aligned with the arrival of their human handlers.
However, for **** dogs there was no measurable disruption. After the clocks went back, their activity in the morning seemed to adjust to this new, human-imposed schedule.
“When we’ve spoken to **** owners, everyone comments that – with that hour change – their dog or cat is up in the morning, going crazy, waiting to be fed.
“But we didn’t really find that in **** dogs in our study.”
The team carried out their research in 2021, when Covid lockdown restrictions were in place in Canada. So they advertised for ****-owning participants, who had huskies or malamutes, to join their study remotely.
“They were amazing,” recalled Li. “They’d ask us questions, put the trackers we sent them by post on their dogs’ [collars], most of them kept really good notes.”
The researchers say their “takeaway finding” is that, for working dogs, gradually easing into a timetable change might be beneficial.
Because, while you can teach an old dog a new routine, such an abrupt, overnight shift can be unsettling. Unless, of course, you Are a **** with no work demands and a particularly comfortable dog bed.

A 2010’s Classic MOBA is Teasing a Return
A 2010’s Classic MOBA is Teasing a Return
While there were clear MOBA winners during the late 2000s and early 2010s, everyone who was a fan of the genre has heard of the game Heroes of Newerth or HoN. Most players stuck to other MOBA titles like League of Legends and Dota 2, but Heroes of Newerth had a big chunk of the market share during the biggest rise of the MOBA genre and even the esports scene. Sadly, Heroes of the Newerth announced they were shutting down their servers in 2022. However, that was short-lived, as they had just announced their return.
Heroes of Newerth: Reborn Announcement
Heroes of Newerth has officially posted their Heroes of Newerth: Reborn announcement video on YouTube. You can check out the video above.
Their social pages have suddenly been posting random messages and even trolling players on their Facebook page since January 1st, 2025. Their last post was back in 2021. While its player base was dwindling then, it still had a dedicated community.
When the servers shut down, even players who no longer play the game were deeply saddened by the news. Maybe this is why the team opted to return and used the shutdown as a marketing tool to bring players back to a new and better version.
There are also several games where players are waiting for the “Reborn” announcement, such as Heroes of the Storm.
What Would Heroes of Newerth Bring to the Extremely Competitive MOBA Genre?
Image via Kongor Studios
When Heroes of the Newerth emerged, Dota 1 was already the “founder” of the MOBA genre, and League of Legends was still trying to get its market share. HoN wanted to mix both games, being faster-paced than Dota 1 and more complicated than League of Legends.
Players even labeled HoN as a direct copycat of Dota 1 since it has several champion designs and mechanics extremely similar to popular heroes in Dota 1. However, players didn’t care and loved the faster gameplay. Heroes of the Newerth got a big chunk of the market share, although still lower than League of Legends during that time.
Dota 1 was dwindling, but Dota 2 is already fast approaching, which took over the HoN player base with its esports-defining prize pools and tournaments. HoN was never the same and started its slow decay over the years.
Image via Kongor Studios
Heroes of Newerth still bring a lot to the table, but only if they try something new. Since League of Legends and Dota 2 have evolved for so long, Heroes of Newerth is the “new kid on the block” again. They’ll need to catch the attention and push something new in the genre to survive.
LoL and Dota 2 are now extremely fast-paced, which was HoN’s bread and butter, so it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.
