  3. EE scores Wembley Stadium connectivity renewal EE scores Wembley Stadium connectivity renewal Having been the first mobile network to bring both 4G and 5G connectivity to the national football stadium of England and de facto home of English football, the ***’s leading mobile comms provider EE has re-signed a multi-year deal with the English Football Association (FA) to continue to be title connectivity partner of Wembley Stadium. It has also renewed its exclusive lead partner arrangement for four more years with the FA, the Scottish Football Association, Football Association of Wales and Irish Football Association. With 90,000 seats, Wembley Stadium is the largest sports venue in the *** and the second-largest stadium in Europe. It has hosted a number of iconic sporting events including the 1966 World Cup Final, Euro ’96 and 20, the 1948 Summer Olympics, the 2015 Rugby World Cup, as well as Live Aid in 1985. EE and Wembley first began their partnership in 2015 since when an estimated 15 million fans having access to purpose-built connectivity, with mobile data usage at the stadium increasing by more than 80% in 2024, as more people relied on the operator’s wireless network to capture and share moments in sport and music history. Having been the first mobile network to bring both 4G and 5G connectivity to Wembley Stadium, the extended deal will see the network’s brand retained across the stadium with a continued commitment to invest in new technology at the venue. The site will retain its official title of Wembley Stadium connected by EE. EE said the agreement will also see Wembley continue their shared ambition to maintain its status as what they claim is the best-connected stadium in the world. “Since the partnership began, we have worked with the Home Nations football associations to use football as a catalyst for change, addressing important societal issues such as racism, misogyny, homophobia and accessibility in football, while coming up with innovative new ways to encourage different communities to take up the sport,” said EE marketing communications director Pete Jeavons. “Football is part of the fabric of our nation, so EE is proud to stand beside all four Home Nations and Wembley…for the next four years, continuing to invest in the sport at all levels to engage communities across the country.” Wembley stadium director Mark ****** added: “We are delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with EE, which will ensure Wembley Stadium retains its status as one of the best-connected stadia in the world. “Over the past 10 years, EE has continually demonstrated its commitment to invest in developments across the stadium, including the 5G network and our two sensory rooms, which are hugely popular with neuro-divergent guests, who might otherwise not be able to attend large-scale events. “The new agreement will bring more benefits to all our guests over the next four years and enable us to deliver an improved customer experience for all.” The four-year extension as exclusive lead partner of all Home Nations football teams will see the EE logo continue to appear on all training kits worn by England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales senior men’s and women’s squads until 2028. The operator will continue to support disability football through its title sponsorship of The FA Disability Cup and the England Para Lions. EE will also become a partner of The FA’s eLions – England’s official esports team. 4. Mysterious Interstellar Object Might Have Shifted Four Planets’ Paths, Study Finds Mysterious Interstellar Object Might Have Shifted Four Planets’ Paths, Study Finds An unidentified celestial object, estimated to be eight times the mass of Jupiter, may have significantly altered the orbits of four outer planets in the solar system. Reports suggest that this planetary-sized body entered the solar system billions of years ago, passing remarkably close to the Sun—near what is now Mars’ orbit. The event is believed to have modified the trajectories of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, contributing to their current orbital patterns. Scientists have long debated the irregularities in the paths of these planets, and this theory presents a potential explanation. Study Simulates Interstellar Flyby According to the study published in the arXiv preprint database, a research team led by planetary scientist Renu Malhotra from the University of Arizona used computer simulations to investigate the possibility of a close flyby. A total of 50,000 simulations were conducted to analyse how an interstellar object’s passage could have affected planetary orbits over millions of years. The study focused on objects smaller than stars but larger than Jupiter, including brown dwarfs and planetary-mass bodies. The findings suggest that in about 1% of the cases, the visiting object influenced planetary movements in a way that closely matches current observations. Close Encounter with the Inner Solar System As reported by Live Science, Malhotra explained that previous models could not fully account for the slight deviations in planetary orbits. The simulations revealed that the most accurate representation involved a body nearly eight times Jupiter’s mass, approaching as close as 1.69 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. Given that Mars orbits at around 1.5 AU, this suggests a dramatic interaction within the inner solar system. Potential for More Such Events Reports indicate that substellar objects are relatively common in the universe, making such flybys more likely than encounters with full-sized stars. The study has yet to undergo peer review, but the findings suggest that a single interstellar object could have been responsible for shaping the structure of the solar system as observed today. 5. Mexico asks Google Maps not to rename Gulf of Mexico Mexico asks Google Maps not to rename Gulf of Mexico ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum has written a letter to Google asking the firm to reconsider its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring the body of water – which is bordered by the US, Cuba and Mexico – be renamed the Gulf of America in his first week in office. But it will only appear on Google Maps with the new name for people based in the US – elsewhere in the world it will retain its current name, which has been used for hundreds of years. There is no international organisation responsible for the naming of bodies of water. But Mexico argues the U.S. cannot legally change the Gulf’s name because the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea dictates that an individual country’s sovereign territory only extends up to 12 nautical miles out from the coastline. “[The name change] could only correspond to the 12 nautical miles away from the coastlines of the United States of America,” Sheinbaum said. Google has not yet responded to the BBC’s request for comment. But in a statement on social media on Monday it said: “We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.” It will also rename Mount Denali as Mount McKinley in the US, following another order from Trump. “When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name,” it said. Sheinbaum has criticised Google’s decision, saying the firm should not respond to “the mandate of a country” to change the name of “an international sea”. But she seemed to poke fun at Trump’s move by joking Mexico may demand Google make some additional renaming decisions. “By the way, we are also going to ask for ******** America to appear on the map,” she said. Sheinbaum previously joked she would consider renaming North America as “América Mexicana” in the country. “He says that he will call it the Gulf of America on its continental shelf,” Sheinbaum previously said when Trump signed the executive order. “For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico.” Source link #Mexico #asks #Google #Maps #rename #Gulf #Mexico Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. South Africa and Rwanda go head-to-head over DR Congo war South Africa and Rwanda go head-to-head over DR Congo war Khanyisile Ngcobo BBC News, Johannesburg AFP South Africa and Rwanda are embroiled in a spat over the deadly DR Congo conflict South Africa and Rwanda’s already fraught diplomatic relations have worsened after President Cyril Ramaphosa accused the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group of killing South African peacekeepers in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. As the rebels gained the upper hand in the battlefield by capturing most of Goma – the biggest city in the east – South Africa fired a diplomatic salvo, warning that further attacks on its troops would be considered a “declaration of war”. Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame hit back, accusing South Africa of being part of a “belligerent force” involved in “offensive combat operations” to help the Congolese government “fight against its own people”. A total of 13 South African soldiers have been killed in the fighting since last week as the rebels made a lightning advance towards Goma – a major trading hub on the border with Rwanda. Last year, another seven South Africans were killed in eastern DR Congo – making it one of the country’s deadliest combat-related tragedies in recent times. South Africa and Rwanda have long had a difficult relationship. In 2014, South Africa expelled three Rwandan diplomats after an attack on the home of an exiled Rwandan dissident in Johannesburg. Kagame’s government responded by expelling six South African envoys. Tensions seemingly eased after Ramaphosa’s visit to Rwanda last year for commemorations to mark the 30th anniversary of the genocide in which about 800,000 people were killed. Getty Images President Ramaphosa (left) and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame tried to mend relations last year But they have flared up again, following the death of the South Africans who were deployed to eastern DR Congo in December 2023 as part of a regional peace-keeping force sent by the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) South African soldiers make up the bulk of the force – known by the acronym SAMIDRC – that had the mission of repelling armed groups such as the M23 and bringing peace to the mineral-rich region following decades of unrest. The latest diplomatic fall-out started with a post shared on Ramaphosa’s X page. In it, the president confirmed he had spoken to Kagame about the escalating conflict and that both leaders had agreed “on the urgent need for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks by all parties to the conflict”. Ramaphosa also insisted, in a later statement, that the presence of South African troops in DR Congo was not a “declaration of war against any country or state” – an apparent reference to Rwanda. South Africa’s Defence Minister ****** Motshekga, however, had a slightly different take, telling reporters: “There’s been no hostilities between us, it’s just that when they were firing above our heads, the president did warn them [that] if you’re going to fire, we’re going to take that as a declaration of war.” But Ramaphosa went further on X, saying the peacekeepers were killed in attacks by the M23 and – he pointedly added – “Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia”. This angered Kagame, who said statements made by South African officials – including Ramaphosa – contained lies and distortion. “The Rwanda Defence Force is an army, not a militia,” Kagame replied on X. “President Ramaphosa has never given a ‘warning’ of any kind, unless it was delivered in his local language which I do not understand. He did ask for support to ensure the South African force has adequate electricity, food and water, which we shall help communicate. “President Ramaphosa confirmed to me that M23 did not kill the soldiers from South Africa, [the Conglese army] FARDC did,” Kagame said. He added that the regional peacekeepers – who included troops from Tanzania and Malawi – were a “belligerent force” working alongside “genocidal armed groups” that targeted Rwanda, and had “no place in this situation”. Kagame closed his lengthy statement by saying South Africa was in “no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator” and if the country wanted a confrontation, Rwanda would “deal with the matter in that context any day”. Kagame’s comments clearly suggested that he wants South Africa to back off from DR Congo, where its military involvement dates back to the late 1990s. It first joined the UN’s peacekeeping mission, Monusco, following the end of the racist system of apartheid in 1994. At the time, the South Africa’s military had just emerged from being regarded as a “highly effective apartheid war-time force” to a “peacetime force” left to grapple with reduced funding and a “lack of political direction”, Thomas Mandrup, an associate professor at the country’s Stellenbosch University, told the BBC. Accept and continue While South Africa has said its involvement in DR Congo was guided by its need to “contribute to the stability” of a fellow Sadc member, defence analyst Dean Wingrin said the country’s economic interests also influenced its decision. “The DRC is a very big trading partner with [us] because eastern DRC is so rich in minerals. We import a lot of minerals… from the DRC so South Africa has an interest in a peaceful DRC,” he told the BBC. While Monusco’s mission has largely been about peacekeeping, escalating tensions in the region led to the establishment of the Force Intervention Brigade in 2013 to “actively engage” with the numerous armed groups in eastern DR Congo. This intervention had initial success in repelling the M23, the most prominent rebel group. This was partly due to the deployment of South Africa’s attack aircraft – Rooivalk – which had a “devastating effect” on the M23 in a short space of time, according to Mr Wingrin. The rebel group then effectively melted away and was subsequently expelled from eastern DR Congo – until its recent comeback which has seen it capture much of the region. However, South Africa’s military has been in no position, this time around, to thwart the rebel group’s advance as it has lost its airpower. “Unfortunately South Africa’s budget has continued to decline over the years. The air force couldn’t afford to maintain the Rooivalks,” Mr Wingrin said. “We’re missing that vital aircover that would’ve come in so handy a few days ago but is way too late now,” he said. AFP Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the conflict in eastern DR Congo Mr Mandrup expressed a similar view, saying South Africa deployed its troops in 2023, ignoring warnings that “you haven’t got the capabilities needed, the defence force is in shambles and you’re facing an opponent that’s much better equipped than in 2013”. He added that it was difficult for South Africa to bring back its troops at this point because the “forces are locked down and caught in two bases”. “They can’t get out, get aircover [or] reinforcements. They can’t even get the wounded out,” he said. Ramaphosa seemed to agree, saying in a recent statement that the situation in the region was “tense, volatile and unpredictable”. In spite of this, any decision to pull South African troops out of DR Congo ultimately lies with Sadc since SAMIDRC was deployed by the 16-member regional bloc. There are reports that Sadc is set to take this decision at a summit taking place on Friday. For Mr Wingrin, there was a need for the South African government to do “serious introspection” over its military involvement in DR Congo. “Is it something they want to push at all costs and what is it worth to South Africa to have sons and daughters dying so far away?” he asked. So, South Africa’s president appears to have a difficult choice – keep his soldiers in DR Congo and risk further deaths, or the embarrassment of pulling them out, presumably after negotiating safe passage for them with Rwanda. Dragon Age: The Veilguard Drops To Just $25 At Amazon Dragon Age: The Veilguard Drops To Just $25 At Amazon If you’ve held off on adding BioWare’s latest RPG to your collection, today might be the day you’ll want to change that. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is on ***** for only $25 at Amazon and GameStop. The massive $45 discount is by far the best deal yet for the new role-playing game. The Veilguard released on October 31, so to see it for this low of a price three months later is a bit surprising. Amazon only has the PS5 version in stock for $25, while GameStop has the deal for PlayStation and Xbox. $25 (was $70) After an ill-fated trip into live-service territory with Anthem, BioWare’s return to its single-player roots was well-received by critics at launch, and the current deal makes it even easier to recommend. While it’s not a groundbreaking RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard still shows just how good BioWare is at crafting an adventure set in a magical world and bolstered by strong real-time action-based combat. “Inch by inch, The Veilguard has wormed its way into my Inquisition-loving heart. Is The Veilguard as complex and nuanced as past Dragon Age games? No, not at all. Instead, it delivers an action-packed romp through a fantastical setting with good friends,” Jordan Ramée wrote in GameSpot’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard review. If you’re looking to add a few more trinkets from Thedas to your collection, you can also pick up The Art of Dragon Age: The Veilguard for $38.30 (was $50). This is a 256-page oversized book showing off concept art and final designs, covering everything from characters to weapons, and if you really feel like splurging, then you can pick up the Deluxe Edition for $79.31 (was $100) thanks to a limited-time deal at Amazon. This package includes the book inside of an elegant foil-stamped slipcase and cover, gilded pages, a ribbon book marker, and two lithographic art prints housed inside of a sleek portfolio. 9. Plane experts query how collision happened in ‘most controlled airspace’ Plane experts query how collision happened in ‘most controlled airspace’ Gregor Najberg/planespotters.net The passenger aircraft involved in the collision pictured in 2017 The aviation world is struggling to understand how a deadly mid-air collision between a passenger plane and military helicopter was able to happen in what one expert described as “the most controlled bit of airspace in the world”. A US Army ****** Hawk helicopter with a crew of three collided with an American Airlines jet carrying 64 people seconds before the passenger aircraft was due to land at Washington National airport. Both aircraft were sent careering into the icy Potomac River on Wednesday night. Airspace over the US capital sees hundreds of civilian and military flights every day, including helicopters tasked with carrying high-ranking officials and politicians between sensitive locations. But ***-based aviation expert John Strickland said the amount of commercial air traffic in the area cannot fully explain why the deadly collision was able to happen. As well as Washington National close to the city centre, he notes, there is the international gateway, Washington Dulles, and also Baltimore Airport a little further away. “There has to be management of traffic flows to keep separation. It’s much like we have in London where you have to manage traffic flows between Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick and London City. “So DC is not different in that sense to London or New York… it’s not totally unusual.” However, there is a lot of restricted air space above the District of Columbia, home to the White House and US Capitol, just across the Potomac River from National Airport. Watch: Rescue efforts as passenger jet and helicopter collide in DC Experts agreed the intersection of civilian air traffic with regular military flights does make DC’s airspace more complex. Aviation consultant Philip Butterworth-Hayes said the incident occurred at the “nexus of different aviation systems”, including civilian and military systems, as well as procedures specific to the airport. “You are at the border of three or four aviation systems here – and it’s at those borders where most accidents tend to happen,” he added. Mr Butterworth-Hayes continued: “This is the most controlled bit of airspace in the world. You have both US government and civilian systems – Ronald Reagan airport is even owned by the government, it’s one of the very, very few like that. “This really is the most secure – and should be the safest – airspace in the world, given the number of security and civilian safety organisations working in that area.” Reuters Rescue workers have been searching the river for survivors overnight Experts agreed that both aircraft would have been in direct contact with civil air traffic control. Footage obtained from an air traffic control source by CBS News, the BBC’s US news partner, showed the two aircraft which appear to have been involved in the ****** clearly visible on radar systems accessible to controllers. There are reports the helicopter was in contact with air traffic control and had been instructed to pass the plane via its rear, raising further questions about why they collided. Mr Butterworth-Hayes said an in-air collision like this requires a number of things going wrong. He said that in order to fly in civilian airspace, the military helicopter would have needed to be fitted with a transponder alerting surrounding aircraft to its position. That means both aircraft should have been able to see each other, he says, plus there would have been instructions from air traffic control and an aircraft protection safety device that operate separately from each other. “On this occasion, you have these two different systems and both should have been able to keep these aircraft separate.” The ****** Hawk helicopter was part of B Company, 12th Aviation Battalion. It left Fort Belvoir, a military base in Virginia, and was taking part in a training exercise. Watch: Witness describes seeing ‘white flare’ at moment of plane collision Speaking to CNN, Cedric Leighton – a retired US Air Force colonel – said it was normal for that type of military aircraft to be training at night in the area, particularly to make sure pilots are proficient with using instruments needed to fly in the dark. He said one of the unit’s duties is to transport high-ranking personnel around the capital – however, it is now known that only the crew was on board at the time of the collision. The unit’s pilots are expected to be proficient at flying in DC’s busy airspace and “train in order to avoid incidents like this”, he added. Mr Butterworth-Hayes said only experienced pilots would be able to train in such a busy section of airspace. “Whether it’s training for new systems or equipment, we need to know what systems the pilot had turned on in the helicopter and whether they had all the safety systems on board, or whether they were trying a new procedure or new route.” Speaking to BBC World Service’s Newsday programme, Australia-based aviation expert Neil Hansford said the collision raises specific questions for US aviation authorities and will likely lead to an overhaul of procedures. He said it wouldn’t happen in Europe or Australia because there are tighter rules governing flight paths. Another factor in the tragedy, says Mr Strickland, is the lower speed the jet was flying at because it was coming in to land. “If any major shock happens, there isn’t really any time – even if the crew survives – to do anything. “The aircraft has got a degree of vulnerability because of its speed. You can imagine that a similar outcome would have been likely even with a much larger aircraft.” Source link #Plane #experts #query #collision #happened #controlled #airspace Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  11. What video game ephemera tell us about ourselves | Games What video game ephemera tell us about ourselves | Games I just finished writing a feature about the Video Game History Foundation in Oakland, California, and how it is preparing to share its digital archive of games magazines. From 30 January, you’ll be able to visit the institute’s website and explore a collection of about 1,500 publications from throughout the history of games, all scanned in high detail, all searchable for keywords. It’s a magnificent resource for researchers and those who just want to find the first-ever review of Tetris or Pokémon. I can’t wait to visit. While researching the article, I spoke to John O’Shea and Ann Wain from the National Videogame Museum in Sheffield, which is also collecting games mags and other printed ephemera. They said something that really fascinated me. The museum is looking for donations to build its archive, but its focus is not so much on the magazines themselves, but on who brings them in. “We’re particularly interested in fan perspectives,” O’Shea told me. “We’re not intending to develop an exhaustive collection of every video game magazine ever made – we’re interested in the full suite of an individual’s video game experience … in how games connect to their lives.” Wain continued: “We’re interested in the stories of why – why did they collect these particular things, what were they looking for? It’s that kind of social context we’re after.” Collections are about memories more than facts – and this applies to games and the cultural matter about them. I’m writing this letter to you in my little cellar office, surrounded by piles of games, game magazines and game books. There are things in here that I cherish, including a copy of ****** May Cry signed by game designer Shinji Mikami, and my father’s ***** Mega Drive; there are also some endlessly useful and fascinating things, such as Steven Kent’s seminal book The Ultimate History of Video Games, and an old Sony personal video monitor, for which I bought special cables allowing me to connect very old consoles. What does all this stuff mean in the end, and what does it say about me? Jet Set ******: as important as the Smiths. Photograph: YouTube I’m not sure. All I know is, when I happen on TikTok videos of people’s games collections I watch transfixed, over and over. I look at the console formats they’ve bought and the magazines they read. It helps me to picture their journey through games history, which may be very different than mine. I think that’s why the National Videogame Museum wants this sort of sociocultural context in its collections: the choices other people make are fascinating. It’s such a shame that museums and academic institutions have only relatively recently been given the resources to collect material about video games. Although classic games are now being carefully archived, the VGHF estimates that 87% of classic video games released in the United States are critically endangered – I’m sure the situation is the same elsewhere in the world. Games discs and tapes deteriorate and become unplayable; the machines they ran on break down. Games magazines were considered ephemeral and throwaway, and are only now being seen as cultural artefacts in the same way as music and movie publications. There’s a lot of history to catch up on. If we really want to remember the youth culture of the 1980s, we need to think just as much about Jet Set ****** and ****** magazine as we do about the Smiths and NME. As O’Shea said in our chat, cultural memory exists in the detritus of our lived lives. Last year, a good friend and I went to the Naomi Campbell exhibition at the V&A. In one area, the curators recreated the model’s dressing room – a chaotic explosion of discarded clothes, wet wipes and makeup. It told us as much about her as anything else on display. We are what we surround ourselves with, and what we’re passionate about. All my books and games are, in the end, me. Perhaps this is why I felt emotional when O’Shea and Wain talked about how games mags are important for their social and personal context. And actually, I had a very recent experience of their intimate value. A couple of weekends ago, I help my mum clear out a few old things at her house. In a dusty corner, we found a plastic bag that had obviously been safely stored away by my dad, who died in 2003. I discovered it contained a pile of games magazines that I had worked on – Edge, DC-*** and others, as well as some copies of my first stories for the Guardian. I used to post him these things because he was interested in games and cool new gadgets. I thought he’d have a quick flick through and chuck them out. But there it all was: my career in a plastic bag, as collated and archived by my dad. Those magazines are in my collection now – once they were about me, now they’re about him. We all have a natural ability to share and ascribe cultural meaning and emotional value. As well as bringing us joy, the things we collect are a message to others. This was important once; take care of it and you’ll understand why. What to play The Reuters game and story Cosy Comfort. Photograph: Reuters When is a news article not a news article? Not into sport or platformers but we love all the modern greats; GTA, Last of Us, Uncharted, Days Gone, Horizon ZD and FW, Spider-Man (and Stardew Valley). You get the picture! A friend of ours – who hasn’t gamed since the 90s – wants us to help get her into gaming again. So it needs to be something we enjoy with a good learning arc. What would you recommend? We are PlayStation gamers.” Of the games you’ve mentioned, Spider-Man, Uncharted and Horizon are all excellent introductions to modern games – and they all have good easy modes. If they were playing in the 1990s, they might recognise a few of the franchises still going today, so Rise of the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil Village might be a good idea. I also love Stellar Blade and The Quarry, which have quite a 90s gaming vibe to them. Also, as you mentioned, Stardew Valley, which has a real Super Nintendo look and feel, I’d recommend Tunic and Roots of Pacha, which both look as if they’ve come from that wonderful era. 12. No Man’s Sky’s Plan for 2025 Is What Todd Howard Needs to Save Starfield No Man’s Sky’s Plan for 2025 Is What Todd Howard Needs to Save Starfield It’s not wrong to say that Bethesda’s Starfield is one of the most controversial AAA titles we’ve seen in recent years. The game’s reception keeps swinging between love and hate and has made many in the community question Bethesda and Todd Howard’s ability to develop games. The Bethesda RPG has failed to make an impression. (Image via Microsoft) Starfield isn’t a terrible title by any means, as Bethesda managed to elevate the game with post-launch updates. Unfortunately, it still lacks a soul, as many players believe, but Howard and his team can save the game and refresh it by copying Hello Games’ brand-new update with No Man’s Sky. No Man’s Sky’s new update changes everything No Man’s Sky continues to deliver big updates. (Image via Hello Games) It’s been nine years since the release of No Man’s Sky, and some might think that Hello Games is done with the title and moving on to a new project. However, that’s not the case, as there’s a big new update here to shock everyone. No Man’s Sky update 5.5 is now available for everyone to experience. It’s called Words Part 2 and is a follow-up to 2024’s Worlds Part 1, which completely shook up the planets across the galaxy in the game. Last year’s update brought new features, like floating islands and giant bugs, and expansions to existing ones. Worlds Part 2 makes the title ******* and better than ever before, with new features, including new gas giants. According to Sean Murray, these are strictly designed for endgame players and are deadly even for the most experienced gamers out there. Ten times ******* than our biggest planet. It’s truly end-game stuff to explore them with huge storms that rage across the surface. That’s not all; there’s also a gargantuan living starship and quest that connects all storylines from the past nine years of incredible updates. Hello Games has included a number of improvements to already existing features in the game. Oceans are much deeper, all mountains are taller, and there’s an improved lighting system to improve the player immersion. The latest updates bring billions of new solar systems that contain trillions of new planets packed with mysteries and are waiting for gamers to explore. It’s a true overhaul of the game and something you’ll never see from Bethesda and Todd Howard. No Man’s Sky is blooming right now The studio has revolutionized the gaming sphere. (Image via Hello Games) We can’t deny the fact that No Man’s Sky had a rocky launch, and that might’ve pushed you away from the game. However, there’s never been a better time to jump back into this title. All of the recent updates and Hello Games’ dedication make No Man’s Sky more refreshing than ever before, with thousands of hours of content to dig into. There are nine years of content, and there’s no way you’re finishing that in a day! Hello Games also has a brand-new project on the horizon called Light No Fire. Murray has confirmed with this brand-new DLC that the upcoming title will use the same engine as No Man’s Sky. It’s incredible to see that Hello Games has made such a big comeback by grabbing every opportunity to make No Man’s Sky ******* and more immersive. Let’s hope the studio can carry this momentum with Light No Fire and bring some serious challenges to Howard. With that said, do you think Starfield needs to learn from the success of No Man’s Sky? Elizabeth Frantz | Reuters President Donald Trump on Thursday blasted former President Joe Biden and Democratic diversity measures after a midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army ****** Hawk helicopter above Washington, D.C., the night before. Trump, speaking at the White House, claimed that DEI “could have been” to blame for the collision, the deadliest U.S. plane ****** since November 2001. No one survived the collision, officials said. There were 64 people on board the airplane, which struck the helicopter as it prepared to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Three soldiers were on board the helicopter. The response has switched from a rescue mission to a recovery operation, as hundreds of first responders scour the Potomac River, where both aircraft landed after the collision. D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said that at least 28 bodies have been recovered so far. Trump first reacted to the ****** in a Truth Social post after midnight, asking why the helicopter did not avoid the plane and why the air traffic control tower did not “tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane.” “This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. 16. SoftBank ‘in talks’ to invest up to $25bn in OpenAI | OpenAI SoftBank ‘in talks’ to invest up to $25bn in OpenAI | OpenAI The Japanese investment group SoftBank is reportedly in talks to invest up to $25bn (£20bn) in OpenAI in a deal that would make it the biggest financial backer of the startup behind ChatGPT. The lender is considering putting a sum of between $15bn and $25bn into the San Francisco-based company, according to the Financial Times. SoftBank, whose other investments include the TikTok parent, ByteDance, and the British chip designer Arm, is already an investor in OpenAI and recently backed a funding round that valued the company at $157bn. Microsoft, currently OpenAI’s biggest shareholder, also joined that round Last week OpenAI and SoftBank teamed up with Oracle to form Stargate, which Donald Trump called “the largest AI infrastructure project in history”. The partnership aims to build datacentres for AI systems, with an initial spend of $100bn. Citing multiple sources with knowledge of the talks, the FT said SoftBank’s equity investment would cover the Japanese company’s commitment to Stargate. Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and an influential figure in the Trump administration, has claimed Stargate’s backers “don’t actually have the money”. OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, replied on Musk’s social media platform, X, that the funding claims were wrong: “This is great for the country. I realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role I hope you’ll mostly put US first.” OpenAI received a competitive jolt this month from the emergence of the ******** rival DeepSeek, after its latest chatbot went to the top of the Apple free app store and sent AI-linked stocks plunging on Monday. 17. Big Tech indicates AI spending is on track despite DeepSeek emergence that knocked Nvidia Big Tech indicates AI spending is on track despite DeepSeek emergence that knocked Nvidia Wall Street analysts are breathing a bit of a sigh of relief over Nvidia after comments from Big Tech heavyweights on earnings calls Wednesday evening reassured investors that artificial intelligence spending remains on track. ******** startup DeepSeek’s new AI reasoning model , R1, fueled a massive sell-off in technology stocks on Monday and alarmed investors primarily because it rivals OpenAI’s o1 model and was made at a supposedly fraction of the cost that U.S. hypercalers are spending on AI. DeepSeek also built its model using Nvidia chips with reduced capability, leading to panic that major tech companies will spend less on Nvidia products and drag down the AI darling’s stock — threatening the AI-fueled gains of the broader market. Wall Street’s mood on AI has picked up after quarterly earnings calls from Meta Platforms and Microsoft reiterated both companies’ huge AI spending plans, however. Analysts, including from Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, reiterated bullish sentiment on Nvidia in the last 24 hours. In its quarterly report, Meta maintained its 2025 capex guidance of between $60 billion and $65 billion — driven by the company’s increased investments in its generative AI efforts and its core businesses — which is consistent with its original guidance given in January 2024. Meta’s chief financial officer said during the earnings call that Meta is “planning to significantly ramp up deployment of GPUs in 2025.” “Despite concerns of cloud capex slowdown from DeepSeek’s notable AI efficiency pushes, we highlight strong AI capex commentary from META and MSFT on Wednesday evening,” wrote Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya in a Thursday note. “Importantly, both companies continue to see their capex increase through CY25/26.” “Meanwhile, the mix of spend continues to skew towards more servers (CPUs, GPUs, ASICs, etc.), with both companies looking to further expand their GPU and custom silicon adoption/purchases,” Arya added. Goldman analyst Toshiya Hari said in a Thursday note that “while Meta’s stated intent to use more of its in-house silicon for their ‘unique workloads’ will undoubtedly feed the merchant vs. custom debate, we believe the reiteration of near-term capex budgets by Microsoft and Meta as well as their long-term thinking on scaling laws will be perceived positively by the market, particularly given the stock’s recent underperformance following DeepSeek’s R1 announcement.” NVDA 1D mountain Nvidia, 1 day Microsoft’s CEO also said on a call with analysts that he expects to see “exponentially” more AI demand as the technology becomes more efficient. The company has committed $80 billion for AI-enabled data centers in its current fiscal quarter, and suggested its third and fourth fiscal quarter capex spending will remain similar to its second fiscal quarter. Nvidia shares lost 17% during the sell-off , and shares traded lower on Thursday on a Bloomberg report that officials under President Donald Trump’s administration are discussing tighter restrictions on the ***** of Nvidia chips to China. Shares of several other megacap technology stocks have also seen steep declines this week. Nvidia shares were higher briefly to start Thursday’s session, but were under pressure again as the trading day continued. Hari, who backs his buy rating on Nvidia, said that the launch of DeepSeek’s reasoning models is a “positive development for Meta and the industry, particularly as Meta hopes to integrate what DeepSeek has achieved into its own AI systems.” “The industry has historically benefited from an open source approach and the recent models from DeepSeek, if anything, reinforces their [Meta’s] view,” the analyst added. Hari noted that Microsoft remained positive on its AI plans even after DeepSeek’s success, as he Microsoft management cited that the “reduction in compute cost should make the technology more ubiquitous and, in turn, drive higher adoption in the cloud but also on the edge.” Bank of America’s Arya noted that Meta’s and Microsoft’s AI capex spending remains on track with strong ramps ahead in GPU and ASIC computer processors. “We highlight the race for AGI (artificial general intelligence) and the top-of-the-line frontier models (i.e. OpenAI/Meta models) continue regardless of the derivative or ‘distilled’ models from the likes of DeepSeek, and AI compute/networking remain important enablers of the AI golden age,” Arya wrote in a Thursday note to clients. Jeffries agrees with analyst Blayne Curtis noting, “We believe the news is highly misunderstood and the trend towards ‘reasoning’ based models and more inference implies compute demand should actually accelerate.” Source link #Big #Tech #spending #track #DeepSeek #emergence #knocked #Nvidia Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Don’t Starve Together is still coming to mobile, but not to Netflix Don’t Starve Together is still coming to mobile, but not to Netflix Don’t Starve Together is no longer coming to Netflix Games But it will be coming to mobile on iOS and Android regardless Playdigious and Klei Entertainment promise an update on the launch at some point in the future It’s been a long ******* of radio silence since we covered the announcement that Don’t Starve Together was coming to Netflix Games back in June of 2024. And we’ve got both good news and bad news. The bad is that it won’t be coming to Netflix, but the good is that Don’t Starve Together is still coming to mobile. Playdigious is still working with Klei Entertainment to bring Don’t Starve Together to mobile. The gloomy, Tim Burton-esque Don’t Starve series sees you stranded on an island filled with hostile wildlife. As a variety of quirky, oddball characters, your objective is to gather resources and survive, but most importantly don’t starve. Originally slated to arrive exclusively on Netflix Games, Don’t Starve Together will now launch globally for iOS and Android via Google Play and the iOS App Store. While we don’t have a definitive release date yet, both Klei Entertainment and Playdigious promise that one is indeed incoming. No Netflix for you So, by the sounds of it, it seems as if Don’t Starve Together’s exclusivity deal with Netflix fell through. And while it’s good to know that it will still be arriving globally, I still can’t help but wonder what this (and the demise of other indie exclusives like Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon on the service) says about Netflix Games future commitment to the indie scene. I mean, Don’t Starve is not a small franchise by any means and is arguably one of the most iconic survival indies of all time. And if that can lose out, what hope is there for others? It’s a shame because Netflix’s indie catalogue has been one of its biggest bonus points for my money. If you want to know more about my perspective take a quick dig through my look at the launch of Squid Game: Unleashed, and why I think that Netflix’s increased focus on its own properties may be bad for the significant crop of indies it has thus far had on the service. Arsenal charged over players’ reaction to Myles Lewis-Skelly red card Arsenal charged over players’ reaction to Myles Lewis-Skelly red card Arsenal have been charged by the Football Association after players confronted referee Michael Oliver following Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial dismissal in the 1-0 win against Wolves. Oliver showed Lewis-Skelly a straight red card in the first half after the teenager fouled Matt Doherty, with the referee ruling it was serious foul play. The Gunners appealed against the decision and the 18-year-old’s three-match ban was overturned earlier this week. Arsenal have until 3 February to respond to the FA charge. Police have been investigating “threats and abuse” directed at Oliver, said referees’ body Professional Game Match Officials Limited. The FA said Arsenal had allegedly failed to ensure their players “did not behave in an improper manner”. Doherty was just outside the Wolves box as he mounted a counter-attack in the 43rd minute when he was brought down by Lewis-Skelly. The decision to send him off was upheld by Darren England, who was the video assistant referee (VAR). The red card infuriated Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and divided opinion among pundits and fans. One second players are coordinating perfectly to execute the perfect combo, and the next, a rogue hero swoops in and wrecks the entire plan. And that hero is likely Wolverine, claws out, who has caused Vanguard players to scream for help. Vanguards are not safe, if one hero is on the battlefield. | Image Credit: NetEase Games When the entire strategy revolves around having a tank absorb hits and hold the line, nothing throws a wrench in that more than this clawed menace charging in and slashing through the defenses like they’re made of paper. Let’s just say the Vanguard mains are not fans of the hero right now. Why Wolverine is such a menace in Marvel Rivals He has been a menace to the tanks. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Vanguard heroes are the backbone of any team in Marvel Rivals. These tanks are built to survive, boasting high HP and abilities designed to mitigate incoming damage. They stay at the frontline, absorb hits, and control the flow of battle, allowing DPS heroes and support heroes. But when the Vanguard tanks are disrupted, the entire team’s strategy falls apart. That’s where Wolverine comes in. Wolverine is a relentless force, and he has been haunting Vanguard players like a moth to a flame. What makes him particularly dangerous? His ability to dash and push targets, along with his attacks dealing damage based on a target’s HP percentage. This mechanic means that regardless of how much health a Vanguard has, he can still tear through their defenses. For Vanguard players, he is a pain to deal with. Naturally, players have been asking: Is there any way to counter Wolverine’s overwhelming power? While various heroes can deal with him, making a team just to counter 1 hero is not plausible. Comment byu/drabmachine from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/drabmachine from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/drabmachine from discussion inmarvelrivals The thread is filled with players asking for ways to kill him or sharing their stories of getting killed. While there are various suggestions, the general consensus is that players need their DPS help to eliminate him faster. Is there a way for the Vanguards to counter Wolverine? Players are thinking of new ways to counter him. | Image Credit: NetEase Games It’s easy to feel like Wolverine might be overpowered, especially for those who like to play Vanguard heroes. His close-combat style, combined with his ability to deal percentage-based damage, makes him a nightmare for tanks. Many have begun questioning if the hero is simply too strong. However, as is often the case in Marvel Rivals, creativity, and matchup is the key here. Since the tanks don’t have great damage and Clawed Menace can do % damage, the result is the death of tanks, but if he faces off against a DPS hero, he’ll easily fall. Comment byu/drabmachine from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/drabmachine from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/drabmachine from discussion inmarvelrivals So, players have been brainstorming other ways to deal with this issue (without relying on DPS heroes). While the tanks might seem helpless, players have been quick to devise ways to turn the tide. The answer? Stun him. If he can’t get close, he can’t kill you. And for this, Peni Parker is the perfect hero. She can keep him at bay or immobilize him with her Cyber-Web Snare ability, simply immobilize any character and keep them in place. In this end, as the battle for dominance in Marvel Rivals continues, one thing remains constant: diversity in team composition and player creativity can take you a long way in the game.
