  2. Everyone in US plane and helicopter ****** feared dead Everyone in US plane and helicopter ****** feared dead All 64 people aboard an American Airlines jet that collided with an Army helicopter were feared dead in what was likely to be the worst US aviation disaster in almost a quarter century, officials said. At least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River after the helicopter apparently flew into the path of the jet late Wednesday as it was landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, officials said. The plane carried 60 passengers and four crew. Three soldiers were aboard the helicopter. “We don’t believe there are any survivors,” said John Donnelly, the fire chief in the nation’s capital. “We are now at the point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation.” The plane was found upside-down in three sections in waist-deep water, and first responders were searching an area of the Potomac River as far south as the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, roughly five kilometres south of the airport, Donnelly said. The helicopter wreckage was also found. If no one survived, the collision would be the deadliest US air ****** since 2001. There was no immediate word on the cause of the collision, but officials said flight conditions were clear as the jet arrived from Wichita, Kansas, with US and Russian figure skaters and others aboard. It was preparing for a routine landing at the time of the collision. “On final approach into Reagan National, it collided with a military aircraft on an otherwise normal approach,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said. “At this time, we don’t know why the military aircraft came into the path of the … aircraft.” Images from the river showed boats around the partly submerged wing and the mangled wreckage of the plane’s fuselage. Inside Reagan National Airport, the mood was sombre Thursday morning as stranded passengers waited for flights to resume, sidestepping camera crews and staring out the terminal’s windows at the Potomac, where recovery efforts were barely visible in the distance. Investigators will try to piece together the aircraft’s final moments before the collision, including its contact with air traffic controllers. “I would just say that everyone who flies in American skies expects that we fly safely,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. “That when you depart an airport, you get to your destination. That didn’t happen last night, and I know that President Trump, his administration, the FAA, the DOT, we will not rest until we have answers for the families and for the flying public. You should be assured that when you fly, you’re safe.” Authorities have ‘early indicators’ of what went wrong The night was clear, the plane and helicopter were both in standard flight patterns and there was standard communication between the aircraft and the tower, Duffy said. “We have early indicators of what happened here,” Duffy said, though he declined to elaborate pending an investigation. It is not unusual to have a military aircraft flying the river and an aircraft landing at the airport, he said. Asked if the plane was aware that there was a helicopter in the area, Duffy said the helicopter was aware that there was a plane in the area. Asked about Trump suggesting in an overnight social media post that the collision could have been prevented, Duffy said: “From what I’ve seen so far, do I think this was preventable? Absolutely.” If everyone aboard the plane was killed, it would be the deadliest US airline ****** since November 12, 2001, when an American Airlines flight crashed into a residential area of Belle Harbor, New York, just after take off from Kennedy Airport, killing all 260 people aboard. 3. First international AI safety report published First international AI safety report published The first International AI safety report will be used to inform upcoming diplomatic discussions around how to mitigate a variety of dangers associated with artificial intelligence (AI), but it highlights there is a still a high degree of uncertainty around the exact nature of many threats and how to best deal with them. Commissioned after the inaugural AI Safety Summit hosted by the *** government at Bletchley Park in November 2023 – and headed by AI academic Yoshua Bengio – the report covers a wide range of threats posed by the technology, including its impact on jobs and the environment, its potential to proliferate cyber attacks and deepfakes, and how it can amplify social biases. It also examines the risks associated with market concentrations over AI and the growing “AI R&D [Research and Development] divide”, but is limited to looking at all of these risks in the context of systems that can perform a wide variety of tasks, otherwise known as general-purpose AI. For each of the many risks assessed, the report refrained from drawing definitive conclusions, highlighting the high degree of uncertainty around how the fast-moving technology will develop. It called for further monitoring and evidence gathering in each area. “Current evidence points to two central challenges in general-purpose AI risk management,” it said. “First, it is difficult to prioritise risks due to uncertainty about their severity and likelihood of occurrence. Second, it can be complex to determine appropriate roles and responsibilities across the AI value chain, and to incentivise effective action.” However, the report is clear in its conclusion that all of the potential future impacts of AI it outlines are a primarily political question, which will be determined by the choices of societies and governments today. “How general-purpose AI is developed and by whom, which problems it is designed to solve, whether we will be able to reap its full economic potential, who benefits from it, and the types of risks we expose ourselves to – the answers to these and many other questions depend on the choices that societies and governments make today and in the future to shape the development of general-purpose AI,” it said, adding there is an urgent need for international collaboration and agreement on these issues. “Constructive scientific and public discussion will be essential for societies and policymakers to make the right choices.” The findings of the report – which build on an interim AI safety report released in May 2024 that showed a lack of expert agreement over the biggest risks – are intended to inform discussion at the upcoming AI Action Summit in France, slated for early February 2025, which follows on from the two previous summits in Bletchley and Seoul, South Korea. “Artificial intelligence is a central topic of our time, and its safety is a crucial foundation for building trust and fostering adoption. Scientific research must remain the fundamental pillar guiding these efforts,” said Clara Chappaz, the French minister delegate for AI and digital technologies. “This first comprehensive scientific assessment provides the evidence base needed for societies and governments to shape AI’s future direction responsibly. These insights will inform crucial discussions at the upcoming AI Action Summit in Paris.” Systemic risks In examining the broader societal risks of AI deployment – beyond the capabilities of any individual model – the report said the impact on labour markets in particular is “likely to be profound”. It noted that while there is considerable uncertainty in exactly how AI will affect labour markets, the productivity gains made by the technology “are likely to lead to mixed effects on wages across different sectors, increasing wages for some workers while decreasing wages for others”, with the most significant near-term impact being on jobs that mainly consist of cognitive tasks. Improved general-purpose AI capabilities are also likely to increase current risks to worker autonomy and well-being, it said, highlighting the harmful effects “continuous monitoring and AI-driven workload decisions” can have, particularly for logistics workers. In line with a January 2024 assessment of AI’s impacts on inequality by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – which found AI is likely to worsen inequality without political intervention – the report said: “AI-driven labour automation is likely to exacerbate inequality by reducing the share of all income that goes to workers relative to capital owners.” Inequality could be further deepened as a result of what the report terms the “AI R&D divide”, in which development of the technology is highly concentrated in the hands of large countries located in countries with strong digital infrastructure. “For example, in 2023, the majority of notable general-purpose AI models (56%) were developed in the US. This disparity exposes many LMICs [low- and middle-income countries] to risks of dependency and could exacerbate existing inequalities,” it said, adding that development costs are only set to rise, exacerbating this divide further. The report also highlighted the rising trend of “ghost work”, which refers to the mostly hidden labour performed by workers – often in precarious conditions in low-income countries – to support the development of AI models. It added that while this work can provide people with economic opportunities, “the contract-style nature of this work often provides few benefits and worker protections and less job stability, as platforms rotate markets to find cheaper labour”. Related to all of this is the “high degree” of market concentration around AI, which allows a small handful of powerful companies to dominate decision-making around the development and use of the tech. On the environmental impact, the report noted while datacentre operators are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources, a significant portion of AI training globally still relies on high-carbon energy sources such as coal or natural gas, and uses significant amounts of water as well. It added that efficiency improvements in AI-related hardware alone “have not negated the overall growth in energy use of AI and possibly further accelerate it because of ‘rebound effects’,” but that “current figures largely rely on estimates, which become even more variable and unreliable when extrapolated into the future due to the rapid pace of development in the field”. Risks from malfunction Highlighting the “concrete harms” that AI can cause as a result of its potential to amplify existing political and social biases, the report said it could “lead to discriminatory outcomes including unequal resource allocation, reinforcement of stereotypes, and systematic neglect of certain groups or viewpoints”. It specifically noted how most AI systems are trained on language and image datasets that disproportionately represent English-speaking and western cultures, that many design choices align to particular worldviews at the expense of others, and that current bias mitigation techniques are unreliable. “A holistic and participatory approach that includes a variety of perspectives and stakeholders is essential to mitigate bias,” it said. Echoing the findings of the interim report around human loss of control of AI systems – which some are worried could cause an extinction-level event – the report acknowledged such fears but noted that opinion varies greatly. “Some consider it implausible, some consider it likely to occur, and some see it as a modest likelihood risk that warrants attention due to its high severity,” it said. “More foundationally, competitive pressures may partly determine the risk of loss of control … [because] competition between companies or between countries can lead them to accept larger risks to stay ahead.” Risks from malicious use In terms of malicious AI use, the report highlighted issues around cyber security, deepfakes and its use in the development of biological or chemical weapons. On deepfakes, it noted the particularly harmful effects on children and women, who face distinct threats of ******* abuse and violence. “Current detection methods and watermarking techniques, while progressing, show mixed results and face persisting technical challenges,” it said. “This means there is currently no single robust solution for detecting and reducing the spread of harmful AI-generated content. Finally, the rapid advancement of AI technology often outpaces detection methods, highlighting potential limitations of relying solely on technical and reactive interventions.” On cyber security, it noted while AI systems have shown significant progress in autonomously identifying and exploiting cyber vulnerabilities, these risks are, in principle, manageable, as AI can also be used defensively. “Rapid advancements in capabilities make it difficult to rule out large-scale risks in the near term, thus highlighting the need for evaluating and monitoring these risks,” it said. “Better metrics are needed to understand real-world attack scenarios, particularly when humans and AIs work together. A critical challenge is mitigating offensive capabilities without compromising defensive applications.” It added that while new AI models can create step-by-step guides for creating pathogens and toxins that surpass PhD-level expertise, potentially contributing to a lowering of the barriers to developing biological or chemical weapons, it remains a “technically complex” process, meaning the “practical utility for novices remains uncertain”. 5. Trump baselessly blames D.C. plane ****** that killed 67 on DEI and Biden Trump baselessly blames D.C. plane ****** that killed 67 on DEI and Biden President Donald Trump used a deadly air ****** that killed three Army aviators and 64 passengers and crew aboard an American Airlines jet to attack his two Democratic predecessors and falsely suggest the tragedy was the result of diversity initiatives in government. In his first visit to the White House briefing room since returning to the presidency last week, Trump initially offered a moment of silence for the victims and praised the efforts of first responders after the ******, which took place just before 9 p.m. ET at Reagan National Airport outside Washington. Footage of the ****** shows the two aircraft colliding in midair before exploding in a massive fireball. A massive search-and-rescue operation for survivors, involving multiple agencies, was launched in the nearby Potomac River, amid heavy winds and icy 42-degree water temperatures. So far, 28 bodies have been recovered from the river of the 67 people believed to be dead, Chief John Donnelly of Washington’s fire and emergency service said in a Thursday morning press conference. After the moment of silence ended, Trump called the ****** “a moment of anguish” for the country and said there is now a “systematic and comprehensive investigation” underway, led by the National Transportation Safety Board, and announced he was appointing Christopher Rocheleau as the acting FAA administrator. He then pivoted to baselessly alleging that standards for air traffic control recruitment and hiring had become lax during the presidencies of his two Democratic predecessors, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Trump also falsely claimed to have once again raised standards for air traffic controllers (AFP via Getty Images) “We must have only the highest standards for those who work in our aviation system. I changed the Obama standards from very mediocre at best to extraordinary, you remember that only the highest aptitude they have to be the highest intellect and psychologically superior people were allowed to qualify for air traffic controllers,” he claimed. “That was not so prior to getting there … and then when I left office and Biden took over, he changed them back to lower than ever before. I put safety first. Obama, Biden and the Democrats put policy first, and they put politics at a level that nobody’s ever seen because this was the lowest level. Their policy was horrible, and their politics was even worse,” he added. Trump also falsely claimed to have once again raised standards for air traffic controllers by signing a memorandum upon taking office which shuttered a longstanding effort at the Federal Aviation Administration to recruit people with disabilities to serve in roles having nothing to do with air traffic control. Positions in the air traffic control system require years of training, special licenses, and annual physical examinations and medical certifications to ensure that controllers meet high-performance standards. Continuing, the president slammed the FAA’s disability recruitment program for having sought out “people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities” and falsely claimed that the prior administration wanted people with such disabilities to serve as air controllers. “Brilliant people have to be in those positions, and their lives are actually shortened, very substantially shortened because of the stress where you have many, many planes coming into one target and you need a very special talent and a very special genius to be able to do it,” Trump said. He then falsely claimed that the FAA website stated that persons with conditions such as “hearing, vision, missing, extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism” were “all qualified for the position of a controller of airplanes pouring into our country” even though the requirements for controllers have long included specific physical and mental health standards. Emergency response units search the ****** site of the American Airlines plane on the Potomac River after the plane crashed on approach to Reagan National Airport on January 29 (Getty Images) “The initiative is part of the FAA’s ‘diversity and inclusion hiring plan,’ which says diversity is ‘integral to achieving the FAA’s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel.’ I don’t think so. I don’t think so. I think it’s just the opposite,” he said. While the president would go on to further blame the Biden administration’s transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, for the efforts to hire people with disabilities, the policy had been in place since 2013 without interruption, including during the ******* Trump previously served as president from 2017 to 2021. Vice President JD Vance, who joined Trump at the briefing, also took time to blame diversity initiatives for the ****** and suggested that the FAA had been lowering standards because the government has been attempting to hire non-white people for ATC positions. “If you go to some of the headlines over the past ten years many hundreds of people suing the government because they would like to be air traffic controllers but turned away because of the color of their skin. That policy ends under Donald Trump’s leadership. Safety is the first priority of our aviation industry,” he said. At the same time as he attacked the prior administration and diversification efforts for the ******, Trump also said he wasn’t sure that the air traffic control system workers involved did anything wrong with respect to the tragedy. He also suggested it was the Army helicopter pilots who’d erred in a social media post made shortly after the ******. Asked why he was now blaming efforts to recruit people with disabilities, he replied: “Because I have common sense, okay, and unfortunately, a lot of people don’t,” he said. He referred to the complex system of keeping aircraft separated in crowded airspace as “a major chess game at the highest level” that requires “very high level computer work.” “I think it’s very important to understand that for some jobs, and not only this, but air traffic controllers, they have to be at the highest level of genius,” he said. 8. The Division 2’s Next DLC Will Bring The Series To Brooklyn Later This Year The Division 2’s Next DLC Will Bring The Series To Brooklyn Later This Year Ubisoft has confirmed the title, setting, and release window of the next piece of DLC for Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. It’s titled Battle for Brooklyn and will be released before the end of 2025. The Division 2 was released in 2019 and has seen a healthy amount of post-launch support from Ubisoft since then. 2020’s Warlords of New York DLC brought the series back to Manhattan, the setting of the first game in the series. Ubisoft had previously teased that a DLC set in Brooklyn was in the works for Year 6 of support, but it faced a series of delays as Ubisoft focused on other aspects of the game. As recently as January 28, Ubisoft told players that the DLC would not ship during the Year 6 series of seasonal updates “to ensure we deliver the best possible experience.” While that caused worry that the DLC could slip out of 2025 as well, Ubisoft took to X today, January 30, to share the first piece of key art and the title of the DLC. Agents! We are heading back to New York. The Battle for Brooklyn DLC will be launching this year. Here’s a sneak peek—for your eyes only! pic.twitter.com/dRHLG5eVyB — Tom Clancy’s The Division (@TheDivisionGame) January 30, 2025 That key art doesn’t reveal much about the DLC, featuring a squad of three exploring a street of Brooklyn with the Brooklyn Bridge in view. Previously, players were only able to briefly explore Brooklyn during the tutorial of The Division, so this DLC should offer a brand-new map to explore alongside a plethora of other new content. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Year 7 of support for The Division 2 should begin sometime in June 2025, so expect Battle for Brooklyn to launch in the back half of the year. As for what’s next for this franchise, Ubisoft confirmed Tom Clancy’s The Division 3 was in the works in 2023 but canceled a spin-off called Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland that same year. 12. Scientists Discover Hidden Clues to the Dark Universe in 3D Galaxy Maps Scientists Discover Hidden Clues to the Dark Universe in 3D Galaxy Maps New insights into the “dark universe,” which includes both dark matter and dark energy, have emerged from a new method of studying 3D maps of galaxies. Scientists have used sophisticated computer algorithms to analyse the relative positions of galaxies in a 3D framework, unveiling previously hidden information that could challenge or support the standard model of cosmology. This method, unlike older techniques, preserves the three-dimensional integrity of the data, offering a deeper understanding of the universe’s structure. New Approach to Galactic Mapping According to the study led by astronomer Minh Nguyen of the University of Tokyo, the latest approach utilises advanced field-level inference (FLI) techniques combined with algorithms to model galaxy growth and dark matter halos. This technique builds upon the traditional method of galaxy surveys, which in the past relied on two-dimensional measurements. By adding a third dimension through redshift data, scientists have been able to map galaxies more accurately and analyse their distribution in space. In traditional methods, data is often compressed into “n-point correlation functions,” which, while efficient, have been shown to obscure key details. The FLI technique, which works directly with 3D data, allows for a more nuanced and detailed analysis of galaxy positioning. As Nguyen told space.com, this new method reveals hidden information about the distribution and behaviour of galaxies and their surrounding dark matter, shedding light on potential inconsistencies in current cosmological theories. Unlocking Dark Matter Mysteries The breakthrough could lead to new discoveries about the evolution of galaxies and their interactions with dark matter. Initial tests have shown a significant improvement in accuracy when compared to traditional methods, with researchers noting a three to five times greater level of detail. The next phase of testing will involve real data from upcoming space missions and observatories, including the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. This technique could ultimately provide insights into the nature of dark matter and its role in the universe’s formation, potentially unlocking answers to some of the most pressing questions in modern astrophysics. 15. Sony backtracks PSN requirement to play some PC games Sony backtracks PSN requirement to play some PC games Sony appears to have backtracked its PSN requirement in some of its PC games. It’s not clear the plans for those not listed. On the PlayStation Blog, Sony shared plans to incentivize PSN linking while also dashing the outright requirement aspect of it. Frankly, it probably realized this hurt its bottom line and while inflated PSN numbers would look good, so would that extra amount of sales that PC gamers hellbent against using the service would foster, not to mention those who literally can’t get PSN. At this moment, it appears to only affect the four games listed in the post — Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. These four will turn PSN linking into an optional thing with perks if you opt into linking your account. Content like early unlocks for Spidey suits or armor in God of War Ragnarok are examples. At the time of writing, Ragnarok is still plastered with a requirement rather than an option. It’s also not clear if this means the games will return to regions where PSN is not an option. What we can say is this is a step in the right direction; PlayStation can succeed in the PC market and bolster sales enough to produce solid games for its core audience while double-dipping into the PC market to really get the big bucks. The court heard Sansom had never shown remorse for what he had done. The judge said she was in no doubt his offending was exceptionally high and that it required a whole-life order. Watts was “obsessed” with Sansom, but it was not a case of “one person’s will being overborne by another”, the judge said. ‘Beautiful, pretty girl’ Prior to sentencing, in a statement read to the court, Ms Mayhew’s father, David Mayhew, said: “I ask myself the same question all the time: ‘Why did you have to kill her?’ Maybe I will never know.” He thanked the killers for pleading guilty to ******* and sparing the family the ordeal of having to go through a trial. “That said, whatever sentence you receive will never compare to the pain you have caused us,” he said. Ms Mayhew’s mother, Angela, said she missed her “beautiful, pretty girl”. “It breaks my heart she is not around, I miss Sarah all the time,” she said. She added that her daughter was a “popular girl with lots of friends from when she was little” and that she was “really clever at school”. Metropolitan Police The court heard Gemma Watts was “obsessed” with Sansom, a convicted ********* Before the *******, the killers exchanged “depraved” messages detailing a desire to kill people with a knife or knives while engaged in ******* activity. Prosecutor Tom Little KC previously told court it was a killing that involved ******* and “sadistic” conduct. Ms Mayhew had accompanied Sansom to his flat in Burnell Road, Sutton, at about 23:00 GMT on 8 March 2024. “From that point in time she was never seen again and she never left that property alive,” said Mr Little. “How long she lived for only the defendants know and they have never said. “What precisely happened to her body after she had been murdered by them in the property only the defendants know.” Ms Mayhew’s head and limbs were found more than eight miles (nearly 13km) away in Rowdown Field in New Addington on 2 April, the court heard. Her torso was discovered later in the River Wandle. ‘Sado-masochistic violence’ She had been living at Friars Wood in Croydon at the time of her death and knew both Sansom and Watts, who was also from Croydon, Mr Little said. Messages between the killers indicated that Ms Mayhew introduced them to each other in the summer of 2023. By the time of the *******, Sansom and Watts had been in a ******* relationship for seven months. “Messages indicate that from the early stages their relationship was characterised by sado-masochistic violence,” said Mr Little. “Such was the intensity of the defendants’ relationship at this early stage that they referred to dying together if they were ever caught.” He added that “given the messages sent between the defendants” it was not possible to conclude Ms Mayhew was killed immediately. After the *******, Sansom said: “We’re not evil, we’re not evil. We done the world a service.” The court heard Sansom had murdered before – having served nearly 20 years in prison for stabbing a minicab driver on Christmas Eve in 1998 and stealing his wallet. He was released on licence in 2019. Charlotte Newell KC said in mitigation that Watts had a history of mental health crises and had been “manipulated” by Sansom. Both defendants were given concurrent sentences of five years for perverting the course of justice. 17. Apple (AAPL) Q1 earnings 2025 Apple (AAPL) Q1 earnings 2025 Apple CEO Tim Cook greets former President Barack Obama at the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20, 2025. Julia Demaree Nikhinson | Getty Images Apple reports December-quarter earnings Thursday after the bell. The December quarter is Apple’s largest of the year, partially due to the holiday shopping season and also because it is the first full quarter of new iPhone sales. While analysts are not worried about the company’s performance in the December quarter, many of them will look for what Apple signals about how its March quarter is shaking out. Supply chain data points suggest Apple’s sales in China are weakening, and Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of artificial intelligence features, is not available in ******** yet. “Specifically, iPhone 16 demand is not amplified by the introduction of iOS 18 and its Gen AI features. In fact, paradoxically, somehow demand is actually softer,” wrote Loop Capital analyst Ananda Baruah in a note earlier this month, downgrading Apple to hold. “We’re again looking for iPhone units to decline for the fourth consecutive year.” Apple does not publish its unit sales, and does not give traditional guidance. New Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh, who assumed the role earlier this month, will likely give investors a few data points on Thursday’s call that analysts can use to estimate earnings per share and revenue for Apple’s March-quarter performance. LSEG estimates Apple’s revenue will grow on an annual basis at about 3.8% to $124.13 billion. Apple said in October that it expected “low- to mid-single digit” sales growth during the quarter. One of the biggest things analysts will be watching for is if Apple’s mainland China sales suggest that consumers in the country are shifting their preferences to locally made and designed devices. “We believe that a major driver of growing competition within the smartphone market is due to growing preference for domestic brands within China,” wrote Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng in a Jan. 23 note. One bright spot for Apple could be its services business, which includes products ranging from device warranties to the Apple TV+ streaming service. Barclays analysts said in a note earlier this month that services could grow as much as 14% on an annual basis, which could offset lower iPhone sales. Apple is expected to be questioned over its plan for Trump’s proposed tariffs and its overall AI strategy. Here is what to expect from Apple in the December quarter, per LSEG consensus estimates: Earnings per share: $2.35 Revenue: $124.13 billion Analysts are expecting guidance for the March quarter of $1.66 in earnings per share on $95.46 billion in revenue. 18. PlayStation 5 Classic Themes Are Leaving, But They Might Return Soon PlayStation 5 Classic Themes Are Leaving, But They Might Return Soon The Classic Themes, released on the PS5s for PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary, will be gone on January 30, 2025. Yes, you read that right. Today might be the last time you will see and hear the classic tune and appearance you experienced every time you booted up your PlayStation 5. However, everything is not lost, as the console maker revealed they are working “behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.” However, that doesn’t mean that there are “plans to create additional themes in the future.” They are just celebrating the legacy of PlayStation hardware. For those wondering, for a limited time, players could choose between multiple different themes for their PlayStation 5: 30th Anniversary, PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation 4. These themes add special effects inspired by the console generation to the homepage and during the boot-up process, creating a nostalgic impact every time you switch on your console or scroll through the games. Themes were introduced on PlayStation consoles during the PS3 and PS4 eras, and players could change the backgrounds, sounds, and icon appearances for their home screens on the fly. However, since the PS5, PlayStation has decided to use dynamic game images as backgrounds and completely dropped the idea of themes. It was nice to have them back for some time, and players hope they return soon. In other news, PlayStation has announced that the future of PS Plus games will focus on PS5 Games. PC users have been incentivised to use PSN accounts. Also, here are this month’s free PS Plus games. What do you think about Classic Themes leaving PlayStation 5? 19. King hopes spin idol Warne would have loved spell King hopes spin idol Warne would have loved spell Alana King hopes her idol Shane Warne was looking down, watching her put on a leg-spin masterclass at the MCG. In the first women’s Test at the famous ground since 1949, it was only fitting a spinner should star. With the Shane Warne Stand behind her, King bowled 23 consecutive overs to bamboozle England on day one of the pink-ball Test on Thursday. The 29-year-old finished with 4-45 – her best Test figures – to set up a dominant start in Australia’s quest to whitewash England for the first time since the multi-format Ashes was introduced. King described the experience as “pretty nostalgic”, after watching Warne torment batters at the MCG when she was a child. Like the legend who is immortalised with a statue outside the stadium, King looked likely to take a wicket most deliveries. “Bowling from the Shane Warne Stand end is something, it’s the first time I’ve ever done it since the stand’s been named after him,” King said. “He’s taken plenty of poles at the MCG for fun so all I can say is hopefully he’s smiling down and having a couple of beers and enjoying a few ripping past the outside edge.” England star Nat Sciver-Brunt, who top-scored with 51, said King had not relented in her consistency during the whole series. “The fact when it does turn, it’s not always the same amount every time; some might skid, some might turn and bounce,” Sciver-Brunt said. “That makes it tricky when the stumps are always kept in play. “Playing her off the back foot as much as possible is key and just reacting to every ball; being confident using our feet.” Sciver-Brunt took time while she was batting to soak in the atmosphere of the 100,000-seat MCG. But her admiration for the famous ground was broken when sledged by the Australians. “They did ask who the boy was on the screen that had Sciver-Brunt on the back (of his shirt), so we talked about that for a bit,” Sciver-Brunt said. “I think (Australia captain) Alyssa (Healy) wanted his number.” Source link #King #hopes #spin #idol #Warne #loved #spell Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. Fortnite’s Item Shop Was Once Fairly Priced Before Greedy Cash Grab Tactics Took Over Fortnite’s Item Shop Was Once Fairly Priced Before Greedy Cash Grab Tactics Took Over It is no secret that a large part of Fortnite’s success can be attributed to its successful deployment of microtransactions. These microtransactions are offered in the form of multiple cosmetics (such as skins) that can be purchased against a set amount of ‘V-Bucks’, which can be brought with real-world money. This has been in practice since the early days of Fortnite, and is something the player base has gotten used to over the years. Things have drastically changed in recent times though – with the Item Shop turning out to be downright predatory at times, marking itself as nothing more than a cash grab. Fortnite community unhappy with the excessive monetization of skins Fortnite has a monetization issue | Image Credit: Epic Games A recent post on the r/FortNiteBR subreddit has gone viral, seemingly ‘thanking’ Epic Games for not selling skins individually, and instead packing them into a bundle. This post is obviously sarcastic in nature, as the showcased ‘Bao Bros’ skin in the screenshots are well over 5 years old at this point. Comment byu/Less_Tennis5174524 from discussion inFortNiteBR Comment byu/Less_Tennis5174524 from discussion inFortNiteBR The comments also seem to agree on the same, with many commenting on the fall of the game towards more predatory microtransactions, calling out Epic for their change in mindset, as well as adding in additional, snarky remarks regarding the current state of Fortnite. Fortnite features a ton of skins | Image Credit: Epic Games For the uninitiated, Fortnite used to feature a lot more skin bundles as opposed to individual skins, which made buying cosmetics a whole lot cheaper. Comment byu/Less_Tennis5174524 from discussion inFortNiteBR Another thing to note would be the age of these cosmetics, which are likely to be older than a large section of the game’s player base. This also highlights how long Fortnite has been around for, and still manages to remain as popular as it was back then – a testament to the success of its simple yet effective formula. Comment byu/Less_Tennis5174524 from discussion inFortNiteBR Comment byu/Less_Tennis5174524 from discussion inFortNiteBR It should be noted that the Epic of today is lot different now, and they would likely charge top dollar for these skins today. Things have changed for the worse, and the player base must vote with their wallets to make an impact The player base must rise up to change things | Image Credit: Epic Games It’s no secret that Fortnite has been on a downhill momentum of sorts (at least with regards to the user experience and overall state of the game – not with regards to its popularity), with many players reporting a massive set of issues plaguing the game. For starters, there is an overabundance of cheaters in Fortnite, and Epic’s move to combat them has been anything but sensible. Banning an entire team just because they were unlucky enough to be paired with a hacker does not instill confidence, and just sours the experience for everyone. This, coupled with the game’s overreliance on microtransactions that seem to extend into scams from third parties (of which Epic does not do a good enough job of keeping check) paints a rather bleak picture of the game. Sure, the game is popular, and maintains a healthy player base to this day – but what is going on is truly **********, and Fortnite must do better to appease its player base. While it can be argued that these skins are simply cosmetic in nature, offering no gameplay advantages, they do in fact introduce unknowing children (who make up a major section of Fortnite’s player base) to things like loot boxes and gambling mechanics, which could be potentially damaging in the long run. Cosmetics are a tempting thing, and the rush of winning against the odds is quite addictive by nature. Ultimately, all players can do is vote with their wallets and hope that Epic listens to their feedback in order to incorporate a better game environment. If all else fails, lawmakers might need to regulate the game in their stead instead. 21. UPS shares tank after weak guidance, plan to slash Amazon deliveries UPS shares tank after weak guidance, plan to slash Amazon deliveries Amazon Prime and UPS trucks are seen on a building in Washington DC, United States on July 12, 2024. Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty Images Shares of United Parcel Service plunged more than 17% Thursday after the company issued weak revenue guidance for the year and said it planned to cut deliveries for Amazon, its largest customer, by more than half. The shipping giant said in its fourth-quarter earnings report that it “reached an agreement in principle with its largest customer to lower its volume by more than 50% by the second half of 2026.” At the same time, UPS said it’s reconfiguring its U.S. network and launching multi-year efficiency initiatives that it expects will result in savings of approximately $1 billion. UPS CEO Carol Tome said on a call with investors that Amazon is UPS’ largest customer, but it’s not the company’s most profitable customer. “Its margin is very dilutive to the U.S. domestic business,” she added. “We are making business and operational changes that, along with the foundational changes we’ve already made, will put us further down the path to become a more profitable, agile and differentiated UPS that is growing in the best parts of the market,” Tome said in a statement. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel told CNBC in a statement that UPS had requested a reduction in volume “due to their operational needs.” “We certainly respect their decision,” Nantel said in a statement. “We’ll continue to partner with them and many other carriers to serve our customers.” Amazon said before the UPS announcement that it had offered to increase UPS’ volumes. UPS forecast 2025 revenue of $89 billion, down from revenue of $91.1 billion in 2024. That’s well below consensus estimates for 2025 revenue of $94.88 billion, according to analysts polled by LSEG. For the fourth quarter, UPS missed on revenue, reporting $25.30 billion versus $25.42 billion analysts anticipated in a survey by LSEG. Amazon has long relied on a mix of major carriers for deliveries, including UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service. But it has decreased the number of packages sent through UPS and other carriers in recent years as it looks to have more control over deliveries. Amazon has rapidly built up its own logistics empire since a 2013 holiday fiasco left its packages stranded in the hands of outside carriers. The company now oversees thousands of last-mile delivery companies that deliver packages exclusively for Amazon, as well as a budding in-house network of planes, trucks and ships. By some estimates, Amazon’s in-house logistics operations have grown to rival or exceed the size of major carriers. UPS has, for its part, taken more aggressive cost-control measures, including catering to more profitable delivery customers. In recent quarters, UPS has benefited from an influx of volume from bargain retailers Temu and Shein, which have rapidly gained popularity in the U.S. Last January, UPS laid off 12,000 employees as part of a bid to realize $1 billion in cost savings. State of emergency declared in Dover due to potential cybersecurity threat State of emergency declared in Dover due to potential cybersecurity threat Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen has declared a state of emergency due to a potential cybersecurity breach. The state of emergency began at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Christiansen’s proclamation said, and is in effect until he terminates it. “We had information from an external entity that informed us it was possible IT system had been compromised,” Christiansen said when reached by phone Thursday. He declined to name the entity, but said he would not have taken action if he did not believe they were credible. Also contributing to his decision was an additional potential cybersecurity issue that occurred Jan. 14, he said. The Dover City Hall at 15 Loockerman Plaza east of State Street April 21, 2023. “The payroll system had been violated some way, somehow,” he said. “I’m not an expert.” The latest potential breach could affect emergency services, utilities and other public services, according to Christiansen, and compromise the personal information of city employees and customers. “It’s very important, in particular, in relation to utilities, because one of our largest users is Dover Air Force Base,” Christiansen said. Outside resources are being called in to assist in determining the problem, if there is indeed a problem, Christiansen said. 24. In surprise move Microsoft announces DeepSeek R1 is coming to CoPilot+ PCs – here’s how to get it In surprise move Microsoft announces DeepSeek R1 is coming to CoPilot+ PCs – here’s how to get it Microsoft has announced that DeepSeek R1 is coming to Copilot+ machines It’ll run on-device, so will be less powerful than other versions of the model DeepSeek R1 will have three Copilot+ versions that will roll out over time DeepSeek has seriously shaken up the AI world with an LLM that is seemingly cheaper to train, more power-efficient, and yet equally intelligent compared to its rivals. While Meta, Google, Open AI and others scramble to decipher how DeepSeek’s R1 model got so impressive out of nowhere – with OpenAI even claiming it copied ChatGPT to get there – Microsoft is taking the ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ approach instead. Microsoft has announced that, following the arrival of DeepSeek R1 on Azure AI Foundry, you’ll soon be able to run an NPU-optimized version of DeepSeek’s AI on your Copilot+ PC. This feature will roll out first to Qualcomm Snapdragon X machines, followed by Intel Core Ultra 200V laptops, and AMD AI chipsets. It’ll start by making the DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B available on Microsoft AI Tookit for developers, before later unlocking the more powerful 7B and 14B versions. While these aren’t as impressive as the 32B and 70B variants also at its disposal, the 14B and lower versions of DeepSeek can run on-device. This mitigates one of the main concerns with DeepSeek – that data shared with the AI could end up on unsecured foreign servers – with Microsoft adding that “DeepSeek R1 has undergone rigorous red teaming and safety evaluations” to further reduce possible security risks. How to get DeepSeek R1 on Copilot+ (Image credit: Microsoft) To start using DeepSeek’s on-device Copilot+ build once its available, you’ll need an Azure account – you can sign up on Microsoft’s official website if you don’t already have one. Your next step will be to boot up Azure AI Foundry and search for DeepSeek R1. Then hit ‘Check out model’ on the Introducing DeepSeek R1 card, before clicking on ‘Deploy’ then ‘Deploy’ again in the window that pops up. After a few moments the Chat Playground option should open up, and you can start chatting away with DeepSeek on-device. If you haven’t yet used DeepSeek, two big advantages you’ll find when you install it are that it’s currently free (at least for now), and that it shows you its ‘thinking’ as it develops its responses. Other AI, like ChatGPT, go through the same thought process but they don’t show it to you, meaning you have to refine your prompts through a process of trial and error until you get what you want. Because you can see its process, and where it might have gone off on the wrong track, you can more easily and precisely tweak your DeepSeek prompts to achieve your goals. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. As 7B and 14B variants unlock, you should see DeepSeek R1’s Azure model improve, though if you want to test it out you might want to do so sooner rather than later. Given Microsoft’s serious partnership with OpenAI, we expect it won’t treat this emerging rival well if it turns out that DeepSeek was indeed copied from ChatGPT – potentially removing it from Azure, which it may not have a choice about if the AI faces a ban in the US, Italy and other regions.
