Hohwald was a 23-year bus driver for the district and a Maple Shade police officer from1968 to 1995, according to his obituary. He served in the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1968, and was a past commander of American Legion Post No. 66. He was a longtime member of Maple Shade P.B.A. No. 267 and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Maple Shade. A memorial of flowers, stuffed animals and Eagles balloons now decorates a fence that surrounds the bus parking lot near Maple Shade High School. A memorial to Jack Hohwald, the victim of a fatal school bus accident, is on a fence at the Maple Shade district’s bus parking area. In a letter posted to the district’s website, Superintendent Beth Norcia said Hohwald left a legacy of community service. “Jack Hohwald was more than just a school bus driver — he was a friend, a mentor, and a dedicated community member who touched the lives of so many students and staff each day,” she wrote. “For our students and staff, Jack was a constant, reassuring presence, a protector and a friend who took great pride in safely transporting our children to and from school each day.” Norcia asked students and staff to wear blue and yellow for the remainder of the week. These are the colors of both the Maple Shade district and the American Legion. The superintendent also discussed how the district will move forward after this tragic event. She said members of Burlington County Crisis team, school counselors and district staff have been on site to assist with supporting staff members and students. A Maple Shade school bus “As an educational community, we appreciate all the support and love shown to our staff, students and families as we continue to process this terrible tragedy,” she wrote. “We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the staff members impacted by this tragedy, especially the Hohwald family.” The accident in the high school lot remains under investigation. The bus driver who struck Hohwald remained at the scene. No charges have been filed at this time. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Mark C. Tilghman ******** Home, 38 North Forklanding Road, Maple Shade. Friends and relatives can call at the ******** home after 10 a.m. Monday and from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Interment will follow at Locustwood Memorial Park in Cherry Hill. Witchcliffe farmer Erin Hutton fronted last Wednesday’s annual electors’ meeting citing concerns with the shire’s Climate Action Plan that was deferred last month for the sake of further workshops with councillors. Ms Hutton and Augusta woman Emma Pinnick said the shire needed to go back to public consultation not just on the current stalled second part of the CAP, but its already-adopted part one. Part of that work was to undo language in part one discussing a “climate emergency” which Ms Hutton described as “alarmism”. The Witchcliffe farmer was among those in the south of the shire concerned about a proposed Synergy wind farm at Scott River. A formal motion was passed at the electors’ meeting for the shire to re-examine those documents and language around climate change. Farmers including wind farm opponent Scott Baxter told the Times they feared enshrined “zero emissions at all costs” ideology in the climate action plan would position the council to support the wind farm against the interest of people affected by it. The shire previously provided seed funding to the Augusta-Margaret River Clean Community Energy group which counted former councillors Lyn Serventy and Paula Cristoffanini as members and which contributed data to the Synergy proposal. The project was raised at last Wednesday’s meeting, but sustainable development and infrastructure director Nick Logan said there was no clear proposal yet to adjudicate. Ms Hutton said climate alarmism was flowing through to residents not understanding the vital role of agriculture in supporting the region. Recent graffiti on her land criticising the live sheep trade was one example of where that community had lost touch, she said. “The narrative has swung too far and that is empowering people with no understanding of agriculture to do that sort of damage to public property,” she said. “I’d like this to be addressed by the shire and the narrative the shire puts out around the regenerative (farming) movement.” Ms Pinnick also questioned how the already-adopted plan recommended supporting young people with activism training and support for school climate action strikes. She asked whether “activist training is acceptable and anything to do with actions in our shire” contributing to negative perceptions of farmers. Speaking as an elector, Cr Greg Boland said he was against any hold-up on adopting the second stage of the CAP once the item returned in March. “Council has responded appropriately to what the community has been telling us,” he said. “It is an existential crisis. “Farmers are going to be the ones most affected by climate change.” The CAP is a guiding policy document steering the local government towards an ambitious zero carbon emissions by 2030. This will include a selection of the more popular limited-time Evolving World accolades, but developer Playground Games hasn’t revealed any additional details yet. Forza Horizon 5 is just the latest once-exclusive Xbox game to bridge the console divide. The game has been out since November 2021, so opening it up to a new audience could help boost sales long after they’d usually be petering out. On Jan. 6, 2025, Interim CEO Mills also abruptly stepped down, effective immediately, adding that his departure was not related to any operational issues or accounting matters. Strange Departures Amid Poison Pill In 2024, ******** Billionaire Carlos Slim accumulated a 24% stake in Talos Energy. Shortly after CEO Duncan’s departure, the company adopted a poison pill in October 2024 to prevent Slim from taking control of the company. The poison pill is triggered when any single investor acquires 25% or more of the outstanding shares. Once triggered, it would allow existing shareholders to purchase additional shares at a discounted price, thereby diluting the ownership stake of a potential acquirer. This would make a takeover attempt much more costly. Negotiating a Deal to Terminate Poison Pill However, the company terminated the poison pill in December 2024 after making a deal with Carlos Slim. The agreement limited his investment firm’s stake to 25% and would also sell some of Talos Energy’s stake in the Zama Field to Carlos Slim’s Grupo Carso. This was seen as a win-win, preventing a potential hostile takeover while banking up to $82.9 million from the deal while strengthening its partnership with Grupo Carso and still owning 20% of Talos Mexico, which holds a 17.4% interest in the Zama Field. The agreement prohibited Control Empresarial De Capitales from buying any more shares until Dec. 16, 2025, beyond 25%. Carlos Slim and his family own both Grupo Carso and Control Empresarial De Capitales. This option still leaves the company potentially vulnerable to acquisition in 2026. Interim CEO Steps Down as Permanent CEO Announcement Looms Before investors could wrap their heads around why the first CEO resigned, the interim CEO abruptly resigned on Jan. 6, 2025, to also “pursue other opportunities.” The company noted that they had found a permanent CEO candidate and were “…in the final stages of the process with this candidate.” The company expects the candidate will join by the end of the first quarter of 2025. Again, the question is, why is there a hurry to leave for the interim CEO? The company also reaffirmed its 2024 production outlook of 91,000 to 94,000 barrels of oil per day and assured investors there were no accounting or operational reasons for Joseph Mills’s departure. Katmai West #2 Significant Discovery of 15,000 to 20,000 Barrels a Day On Jan. 15, 2025, Talos Energy announced that it had significantly drilled the Katmai West #2 well located in the Ewing Bank area of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico ahead of schedule and under budget to a vertical depth of 27,000 feet. It made a significant discovery, namely that it encountered the primary target sand full-to-base with more than 400 feet of gross hydrocarbon pay and excellent rock properties, as expected. This equates to approximately 15,000 to 20,000 barrels of oil a day. The first production is expected in the late second quarter of 2025. TALO Stock Triggers a Rising Wedge Breakdown A symmetrical triangle is comprised of a descending (falling) upper trendline resistance converging with an ascending (rising) lower trendline support at the apex point. A breakout occurs when the stock surges above the upper trendline resistance. A breakdown occurs when the stock collapses below the lower trendline support. The stock was down 8.4% as of 1:20 p.m. ET but had lost as much as 11.3% earlier in the day. The leg down comes as the S&P 500 gained 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.2%. The insurer reported earnings before the market open, missing certain estimates and offering guidance that disappointed investors. While Cigna’s Q4 revenue of $65.65 billion beat Wall Street’s estimate of $63.44, rising medical costs led to a much more significant earnings-per-share (EPS) miss. The company delivered $6.64 per share, when Wall Street expected $7.82. Health insurance companies use a key metric called the medical cost ratio to track the relationship between premiums and expenses paid — lower is better. Cigna reported a ratio of 87.9%, higher than the expected 84.7%. Cigna CEO David Cordani said in the earnings call Cigna is taking “corrective actions to address these near-term pressures” and “steps to further advance our long-term growth strategy” in the face of these rising costs. During the call, the team told investors that it would take two years to recover the margins compacted by higher-than-expected costs. In light of this, the company forecasts EPS for 2025 to hit $29.50 while Wall Street has expected guidance of $31.50 per share. In good news for shareholders, the board of directors increased Cigna’s quarterly dividend by 8% and authorized a $6 billion increase in share repurchasing. As a prime example of this, the new FCC Chair Brendan Carr has struck down a Biden-era proposal that would have limited landlords’ ability to make tenants accept mandatory internet service through a single bulk provider. Since the proposal has been shot down, there’s nothing keeping building owners from forcing their tenants to pay for internet service they neither want nor need. As reported by Ars Technica, Carr framed his decision as a win for consumers and claimed that the previous proposal would have increased increased internet costs for tenants. He also condemned the proposal as “regulatory overreach” and promised to undo more of the FCC’s prior agenda. However, the now-defunct proposal was not a ban on landlords’ ability to offer bulk internet services; it simply gave tenants the ability to refuse the service. That was opposed by housing industry lobby groups, who in turn praised Carr’s decision for allowing renters “to reap the benefits of bulk billing.” Cable industry lobbyists–including representatives of Comcast, Charter, and Cox–were also in favor of Carr’s action. Public Knowledge–a non-profit public interest group–shared a statement to Ars Technica through its legal director John Bergmayer which states that the proposed bulk-billing ban would have eliminated “one of the ways that landlords, HOAs, and telecom and cable companies collaborate to bypass the intended effort of [FCC] rules.” Now, there’s little to prevent landlords from offering substandard internet service for inflated prices to tenants who can no longer refuse them. During a special 90-minute stream on Thursday, developer Firaxis announced the plans for the game through its first nine months. The reveal came after a media outlet leaked details of the first few post-launch leaders and civilizations ahead of the announcement. Civilization 7 will launch in “early access” on February 6 and will include a Day 0 Patch for those who buy the Deluxe and Founders Edition of the game. For everyone else, it will be available starting February 11. From there come the planned “Collections”. March brings the first DLC with the Crossroads of the World Collection. In Early March, Release 1 introduces Ada Lovelace as a new leader, along with Carthage and Great Britain as playable civilizations and four new natural wonders. A major update—Update 1.1.0—will also roll out, featuring the Natural Wonder Battle event and the addition of the Bermuda Triangle as a new wonder. Later in the month, Release 2 brings Simon Bolivar, along with Bulgaria and Nepal, plus more free content, including the Marvelous Mountains event and Mount Everest as a new natural wonder. At some point between April and September, the Right to Rule Collection expands the game even further, introducing two new leaders, four new civilizations, and four new world wonders. Free content updates will also continue, adding new events, challenges, and updates for all players. Firaxis also promised more updates for players in October and beyond for the first Civilization game in nine years. A specific release date for the Crossroads of the World collection will be announced in the coming weeks. If confirmed, Kennedy would run the US Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees more than $US3 trillion ($A4.8 trillion) in healthcare spending, including at the Food and Drug Administration and the agency in charge of the Medicare and Medicaid health insurance programs covering nearly half of all Americans. On Wednesday, Kennedy said he would address rapidly increasing rates of chronic disease and follow Trump’s direction on abortion. He also said fewer processed foods should be available in school lunches or for purchase with food stamps, though both of those programs fall under the purview of the US Department of Agriculture. Fortunately, that is not how it worked out between Sony and the Helldivers 2 player base, where millions taking part in democracy came together to make the studio reverse one of its major policies. Helldivers 2 players fought against Sony last year | Arrowhead Studios The studio came under fire last year for mandating a PSN login for those who wanted to enjoy PlayStation’s first-party games on PC. While the mandate made sense at first, it did not sit right with many users. This brings us to today, with the company officially backing out of the mandate and making it optional for a range of their games available on PC. Sony versus Helldivers 2: A never-ending struggle The PSN mandate was introduced to PS first-party games on PC | Sony When the galaxy-exploring co-op title first came out last year, it was all over the internet, even reaching the top of Steam Charts in no time. However, just as it was enjoying the peak of its players, the publishing studio behind the game rolled out a mandate that changed the course of history for the game forever. Sony essentially got rid of a majority of players in an attempt to mine for data by introducing a necessary PSN requirement. Not only did it restrict countless numbers of players from countries where the service wasn’t available, but the controversy went so out of hand that the studio had to step back at the time. Unfortunately, this did not stop the studio from introducing the same mandate in the yet-to-be-released PlayStation titles on PC at the time, not until recently, when Sony, as noted by The Verge, officially announced how a PSN account would no longer be required to enjoy titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, and more. While this remains an ultimate win for the player base, it remains important to note the contributions of the Helldivers 2 players who paved the way with their love for democracy in order to get rid of the company’s tyranny over the user base.
