  2. ESA Issues Statement On Tariffs and Industry Impact To Trump ESA Issues Statement On Tariffs and Industry Impact To Trump · · February 3, 2025 The United States government—led by Donald Trump—is set to impose new trade tariffs across a number of countries such as Canada, Mexico, and China. These tariffs are set to impact a number of industries including video games, and has garnered a response from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). In a statement given to Kotaku, the organization is asking Trump and the United States government to consult to avoid “significant harm” to people in the United States. “Tariffs on video game devices and related products would impact Americans of all ages across the country,” the statement reads. “We urge the administration to consult with the private sector in a transparent process to avoid causing significant harm to everyday Americans and to one of the fastest growing entertainment sectors in the United States.” It’s worth nothing that digital software is likely to avoid the tariffs, physical products like game discs and consoles aren’t likely to be so lucky. It’s unknown just how much of an impact on prices gamers will see on things like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, computer graphics cards, and even the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The tariffs are scheduled to being at 12:01 ET on February 4. How do you think these tariffs will affect the video game industry, and what do you think of the ESA’s statement? 3. Trade War Heats Up After Trump Orders Tariffs and Canada Retaliates Trade War Heats Up After Trump Orders Tariffs and Canada Retaliates The United States and its biggest trading partners were hurtling on Sunday into a new era of protectionism as Canada, Mexico and China said they would adopt countermeasures against new tariffs levied by President Trump. From honey to tomatoes, and from clothes to toilet bowls, a wide range of American goods that cross the border into Canada, worth more than $100 billion, will soon be hit with a 25 percent tariff. “We don’t want to be here,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a somber televised address from Ottawa on Saturday night in which he spoke of the deep bonds between the neighbors. “We didn’t ask for this.” On Sunday, China said it would “take corresponding countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests.” It also said it would take legal action at the World Trade Organization. And in a video released on Sunday, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said that she would unveil the first steps of her government’s so-called Plan B plan on Monday if an agreement with the United States could not be reached. Ms. Sheinbaum earlier warned of retaliatory “tariff and nontariff measures.” The policy announced by Mr. Trump on Saturday hit Canada and Mexico with tariffs of 25 percent on all goods, with a carve-out for ********* energy and oil exports. Those are to be taxed at 10 percent. He also placed a 10 percent tariff on ******** goods. He also ordered an end to the ability of Americans to buy up to $800 of goods per day from each country without paying tariffs. It was a blow to the giant businesses that online companies like Temu and Shein have built by shipping directly from factories in China to American homes, bypassing American retailers. The levies are to go into effect just after midnight on Tuesday and will be added on top of existing tariffs. The removal of duty-free treatment for small shipments from all three countries means that their buyers will have to start paying not only the new tariffs but all the other many tariffs that have accumulated over the years on clothing and other consumer goods. Mr. Trump defended the tariffs on Sunday, while acknowledging that they could have repercussions. “Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!),” he said in an early-morning social media post. Mr. Trump has said that the tariffs are intended to reduce the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl over the border, as well as of migrants. (The traffic of both people and ******** drugs from Canada is, however, very small.) If there is economic pain, he suggested, it will be worth it. When Mr. Trump imposed tariffs on China during his first term in the White House, some studies found that part of the cost was passed on to American consumers. Suppliers in China also cut their prices in many cases to offset part of the cost of the tariffs. Most Republicans in Congress have stayed silent or praised Mr. Trump’s tariffs, even as their constituents express anxiety about rising prices. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the rare Republican who regularly criticizes the president, was once again an exception. “Tariffs are simply taxes,” he said on social media. “Conservatives once united against new taxes. Taxing trade will mean less trade and higher prices.” If other Republicans share Mr. Paul’s belief that the economy may take a hit, they kept it to themselves. “Ohio is open for business and will roll out the red carpet for any company manufacturing in America!” Senator Bernie Moreno, Republican of Ohio, wrote on social media. Party leaders, too, were falling into line. “I support what the president’s doing,” the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, John Barrasso of Wyoming, said Sunday on Fox News. “We need to get rid of the fentanyl. We need to tell China as well as Mexico as well as Canada to get the fentanyl out of our country.” Democrats spent the weekend hammering the message that Mr. Trump was responsible for making life in America more expensive. “In one reckless move,” said Representative Gabe Vasquez, Democrat of New Mexico, “the president just raised the price you pay for gas, the truck you drive to work, a computer for your small business and everything at the grocery store, from avocados to tequila.” It was uncertain how much success China might find at the World Trade Organization, which has lost much of its ability to handle such legal challenges since the United States began blocking the appointment of judges to it in Mr. Trump’s first term. The W.T.O.’s appellate body lost judges as their terms expired and has not been able to form a quorum to hear cases since the end of 2019. The organization can still form panels to compile reports on the merits of cases, but reports can no longer go to the appellate body for a legally binding decision. When Mr. Trump imposed tariffs on ******** goods during his first term, China responded each time with tariffs on American exports, but because China sells far more to the United States than it buys, it quickly ran out of goods to put tariffs on. Last month, American law enforcement officials called for an end to the duty-free shipments from China, which they blamed for allowing considerable quantities of fentanyl and related supplies into the United States because the shipments receive little or no inspection by customs agents. In a statement on Sunday, China’s Ministry of Commerce urged the United States to “view and handle its fentanyl and other issues in an objective and rational manner, rather than threatening other countries with tariffs.” The Foreign Ministry defended China’s record on the issue, saying it had led the world when it imposed stringent regulations on fentanyl-related substances in 2019. The true cause of the epidemic of fentanyl deaths in the United States, China has argued, is an American failure to curb drug addiction, not the large-scale production or export by China of chemicals used mainly by ******** labs in Mexico to make the drug. Ms. Sheinbaum, the ******** president, took a similar stance on Sunday. “If they want to act,” she said, “they should not set their sights on Mexico, but on their own country, where they have done nothing to stop the ******** ***** of this and other drugs.” Ms. Sheinbaum said she was still awaiting Mr. Trump’s response to her offer to establish a working group of security and health officials from both countries to tackle the fentanyl problem. In announcing the new ********* tariffs on Saturday, Mr. Trudeau addressed Americans directly, saying that the U.S. tariffs on ********* goods would harm them, too. “This is a choice that, yes, will harm Canadians, but beyond that, it will have real consequences for you, the American people,” he said. “As I have consistently said: Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities.” The ********* provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia announced that they would pull American, beer, wine and spirits from government-owned liquor stores. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario imports about 1 billion ********* dollars — about $690 million — worth of U.S. products each year. One ********* province took a more targeted approach, singling out areas of the United States where support for Mr. Trump’s policies has been especially strong. In British Columbia, the premier, David Eby, announced that the province would stop sales of alcohol produced in “red states.” Annie Karni contributed reporting from Washington, Ian Austen from Windsor, Ontario, and James Wagner from Mexico City, Source link #Trade #War #Heats #Trump #Orders #Tariffs #Canada #Retaliates Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Civilization 7 Treasure Fleets Guide Civilization 7 Treasure Fleets Guide During the Exploration Age of you Civilization VII playthrough, you might stumble across a special kind of ship called the Treasure Fleet. This is only granted to you by procuring a specific type of resource and it’s required to complete some objectives for the Economic Advisor. However, beyond that, the game doesn’t truly explain what the fleets are used for or how they work. Fortunately, we played enough Civilization 7 to understand the Treasure Fleets, and they are a goldmine if used properly. Below, we’ll show you exactly what to do with Treasure Fleets and how to make boatloads of gold with them. How to get Treasure Fleets in Civilization 7 For starters, let’s talk about how to acquire your first Treasure Fleet. This type of ship is only given to you if you procure the Silver resource, which is indicated by the silver pot and orange background icon. You need to have this resource within one of your settlement’s borders and then build a mine on the resource tile when you get the chance to grow your settlement. It’s also required to have the silver resource be connected to a settlement with a coastal border. Choosing to expand into the Silver resource tile If the Silver resource is already in your coastal settlement when you establish it, then all you have to do is build the mine on it. You get the chance to do that when your population grows, and the game allows you to convert a new tile. When this happens, select the Silver resource tile and then go to the Resource Management screen. Here, make sure the Silver resource is slotted into the settlement that has its tile. However, it will be a separate resource located on the right side of the screen, as seen in the screenshot below. Silver is an automatic resource if your settlement owns it From there, you’ll start the process of making Treasure Fleets, which takes 10 turns. They are created one by one for every settlement where you have Silver as a resource. So, in theory, you could make multiple Treasure Fleets at the same time if you own more than one Silver tile. What to do with Treasure Fleets in Civilization 7 Once you have made your first Treasure Fleet, it will be treated as a unit you command during every turn. The main goal of a Treasure Fleet is to offload it within the border of any of your homeland settlements. Homeland settlements refer to any settlement that’s located on the continent where you started the game. So, from your coastal settlement when the Treasure Fleet starts, find the closest homeland settlement and make your way there turn after turn. When you’re within the border of the settlement, select the Treasure Fleet at the start of a new turn and find the “Unload Cargo” icon on the Treasure Fleet’s unit box. Unloading the Treasure Fleet cargo Select the Unload Cargo icon, and you’ll earn one Treasure Fleet Point and 150 gold. If the Unload Cargo icon is greyed out and not selectable, then you’re either not within a settlement’s border or not at a homeland settlement. Obviously, the extra 150 gold is a nice return for basically just sailing a ship to a settlement. However, the Treasure Fleet Points are another matter. If you chose the Economic Advisor, one of the objectives on your Legacy Path is to score 10 “TF Points” during the age where you received the objective. In our case, we got the objective at the start of the Exploration Age, and it took us over 100 turns to score all 10 TF Points. Scoring one TF Point in Civilization VII If you fail to complete the task during the age you received the objective, you won’t earn any Legacy Points on the Economic Path. The objective will also disappear when you begin the next age in Civilization VII. The best strategy to use with Treasure Fleets is to try and establish settlements wherever you can find Silver. Then, set up a homeland settlement at the closest location you can to all of your Silver settlements. With the settlements close to one another, you can sail the treasure fleets faster and produce gold substantially quicker. You’ll find most Silver tiles on smaller islands in Civilization VII. The Continents Plus and Archipelago map types are best for finding islands. However, most map types will still allow for easy Treasure Fleet navigation if you can establish the settlements quickly enough. There’s so much to learn and discover when you’re exploring the massive world of Civ 7. Be sure to use our Civilization 7 guides hub to find all of our guides on the game in one spot. 10. ‘How England Golf’s yellow cards are tackling blight of slow play’ ‘How England Golf’s yellow cards are tackling blight of slow play’ But the final group of McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka were regularly held up by the group in front, with Tom Kim particularly culpable. The young Korean – regarded as one of the game’s exciting prospects – took so long over so many shots, including his second to the sixth which he sprayed into the ocean. But, intriguingly, the answer to this blight on the sport might not lie entirely with how long an individual shot takes. This is evidenced by an initiative pioneered at top amateur tournaments in England last year. Threeball round times at the most prestigious championships invariably beat the four and half hour mark. Some will say that is still too slow, but realistically over 7,000-yard golf courses set up to test the best, that is a reasonable timeframe. “Fortunately the game is taking notice and I think we have a pretty good control over it,” James Crampton, England Golf’s director of championships told BBC Sport. An important change, brought in last year, was to create a number of “pace of play stations” at various points around the course. Each group is required to hit those times to avoid being hit where it hurts most – on their scorecard. “Instead of us monitoring a golfer in terms of the amount of time they individually take to hit a shot, we’re actually monitoring the time as to how long they take to play a hole,” Crampton explained. “We allocate three or four pace of play stations throughout the round and the threeball is required to meet those checkpoints at the allotted time. If they fail to do that, they’re given what we effectively call a yellow card. “And then they are required to make the next one. If they fail to do that, then all three in the group would be penalised a stroke.” No golfer suffered such a penalty last season, although several players came close. During the English Amateur some competitors could be seen running down the fairways of Seaton Carew to make their checkpoint time. But, in short, it seems to work. “They’re not focusing just on how long it takes them to hit a shot, they’re focusing on other things that take a lot of the time,” Frampton added. “There’s been a change of attitude. They stand on that first tee, knowing they’ve got to make these pace of play stations. “[Before] some people were being told by a referee to hurry on [but] they were ignored becacuse the players knoew no penalties were ever applied.” Under the scheme, any group that has not lost ground on the golfers immediately in front of them cannot be punished. Likewise, lengthy rulings are accounted for, but players are incentivised to keep up. “We are really keen for players to get an awareness as to how long it takes them to take a glove on and off, how long it takes them to look at the yardage, how long it takes them to walk to their ball,” Crampton explained. “We’re not really bothered about how long it takes them to hit a shot. We just want to make sure that they play their hole. “And all of those things that we are required to do to play golf, they do that in a reasonable time by meeting these pace of play stations.” Slow play is a turn off at every level of the game. In the pro ranks, the DP World Tour has made progress and, refreshingly, LIV has imposed shot penalties. But the PGA Tour was seemingly oblivious and indulgent of its members, until commentators such as CBS’s Dottie Pepper called out the slow coaches for a “lack of respect” last month. Nowadays the tour has investment from outsiders – the Strategic Sports Group – who want their stake to grow. So there is an imperative to improve “the product” and quickening proceedings can only help. They could start by playing final rounds in two rather than threeballs. England Golf’s major events always include a 50-minute break between the morning and afternoon waves of starters which helps the flow of play throughout the day. This would be harder to achieve in pro events where two-tee starts are the norm, but Crampton believes his blueprint involving pace of play stations is transferable to the paid ranks. “We’re not putting a lot of pressure on the players,” he added. “If a group is out of position, we don’t then follow them down the side of the fairway in a buggy, (which is what happens in pro events when groups are ‘put on the clock’). “That can be quite off putting. We just let them go. We say, look, guys, this is where we are, we need you to get in that position and we’re going to just let them play. “So I don’t see any reason why (it can’t transfer to the pro game). I think we just have to potentially get away from this concept that slow play is all around how long it takes just to hit your shot.” It is an interesting take on arguably the most pressing issue in the game. Last Sunday, it was undoubtedly worth staying up to see McIlroy’s brilliant win, one that should have brought fresh eyeballs to the game – but the the fact is for most people it took far too long, diehards included. 12. DOGE task force gains access to U.S. Treasury Department data, payment systems DOGE task force gains access to U.S. Treasury Department data, payment systems The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, run by President Donald Trump’s billionaire adviser and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has gained access to sensitive Treasury data including Social Security and Medicare customer payment systems, according to two people familiar with the situation. The move by DOGE, a Trump administration task force assigned to find ways to fire federal workers, cut programs and slash federal regulations, means it could have wide leeway to access important taxpayer data, among other things. The New York Times first reported the news of the group’s access of the massive federal payment system. The two people who spoke to The Associated Press spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, Ron Wyden of Oregon, on Friday sent a letter to Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressing concern that “officials associated with Musk may have intended to access these payment systems to illegally withhold payments to any number of programs.” “To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy,” Wyden said. Elon Musk says Trump agreed to “shut down” USAID, government’s primary humanitarian aid agency 03:03 Top Treasury official resigns The news also comes after Treasury’s acting Deputy Secretary David Lebryk resigned from his position at Treasury after more than 30 years of service. The Washington Post on Friday reported that Lebryk resigned his position after Musk and his DOGE organization requested access to sensitive Treasury data. “The Fiscal Service performs some of the most vital functions in government,” Lebryk said in a letter to Treasury employees sent out Friday. “Our work may be unknown to most of the public, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t exceptionally important. I am grateful for having been able to work alongside some of the nation’s best and most talented operations staff.” The letter did not mention a DOGE request to access Treasury payments. Musk on Saturday responded to a post on his social media platform X about the departure of Lebryk: “The @DOGE team discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once.” He did not provide proof of this claim. DOGE was originally headed by Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who jointly vowed to cut billions from the federal budget and usher in “mass headcount reductions across the federal bureaucracy.” Ramaswamy has since left DOGE as he mulls a run for governor of Ohio. 13. Car bomb kills 15 in northern Syria: hospital workers Car bomb kills 15 in northern Syria: hospital workers A car bomb has killed at least 19 people in the northern Syrian city of Manbij, the second attack there in three days and Syria’s deadliest since Bashar al-Assad was toppled from power in December. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack in Manbij, located 30km from the Turkish border. Hospital workers identified the dead as 18 women and one man, and said another 15 women were wounded. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) condemned the car bombing, accusing Turkey-backed factions of using such bombings and violence to intimidate local residents. The victims were agricultural workers and the death toll was likely to increase, a civil defence official told Reuters. Manbij has changed hands numerous times during Syria’s 13-year war, most recently in December when Turkish-backed groups captured it from the US-backed SDF, which is led by the Kurdish YPG militia. The SDF had taken Manbij from Islamic State fighters in 2016. On Saturday, a car bomb in Manbij killed four civilians and wounded nine others, including children, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported. Assad was ousted from power on December 8 after a lightning offensive by the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, whose leader Ahmed al-Sharaa was declared Syria’s transitional president last week. with AP Source link #Car #bomb #kills #northern #Syria #hospital #workers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  14. Civilization 7: How To Get More Settlements Civilization 7: How To Get More Settlements Civilization 7 starts you off with one lowly settlement in the Antiquity Age, but as you progress, you can amass an entire empire’s worth of towns and cities. Your cities are the powerhouses of the empire, producing massive structures, while the towns can specialize in one type of production to aid the capital of your civilization. However, to get to the point of ruling over dozens of settlements, you need to first learn how to acquire them. There are roughly four main methods to get more settlements in Civilization VII, and you can see what they are in the guide below. How to get more settlements in Civilization 7 All settlements, except for your capital, will usually start as a town. Then, as your empire grows, you can convert the towns into cities, which comes with various pros and cons. Civilization VII doesn’t just hand you towns and cities on a silver platter, though. You have to work for them and put in plenty of time, effort, and resources into acquiring settlements one by one. Below, we’ll show all the methods to get settlements in Civilization VII: Use a Settler or special Commander Using the Settler to establish a new settlement The most common way you’ll establish settlements is by using a unit called the “Settler.” This type of unit can be produced at your capital from the very start of the game along with the “Scout.” However, the Settler is much different from the Scout, as you don’t directly control the Settler. Instead, when the Settler is produced, you can choose a spot on the map you’ve explored to establish a settlement there. The Settler can only go as far as you’ve explored, so you can’t send it to a blacked-out tile. You also need to be picky about the spot you select, as the map will indicate where recommended settlement spots are. Generally, you’re looking for the two towers icon, which is where the game suggests you build a settlement. You can pick any spot you want, though. Settlers can take damage if you make them travel a great distance, especially over water. It’s also important to remember that as you advance in ages, the game suggests you establish settlements on a different continent or hemisphere. This increases the time to find the settlement and the death potential of your Settler. In addition to the Settler, certain Commanders, such as Roma’s Legatus, also have the ability to establish settlements. Legatus specifically can find a settlement every three levels and on any spot you’ve explored. When choosing a spot for a settlement, you want to keep a few things in mind. One, it’s ideal for it to be near fresh water and resources, on flat terrain, and not too close to another leader’s settlement. Leaders don’t like when you encroach on their territory and doing so will result in a hit to your relationship status with them. Become a Suzerain of an Independent The options for Independent Villages The second method of establishing a settlement is by becoming a Suzerain of an Independent Village. Independent Villages are located all across the map in Civilization VII and can either be friendly, neutral, or hostile towards you. If you click on the Independent’s main tile, you can see the “Projects” tab. Here, you’re able to either befriend the Independent or incite a raid with them. You can also disperse the Independent, dissolving its existence, by defeating its capital and standing on top of it. Once you’re standing on the capital, click on your unit and you’ll see an icon with a dot and four arrows. Click that to disperse the Independent. Be warned, though, as Independents can reappear after a few turns once they’re dispersed and they’ll always be hostile to you when they come back. Dispersing an Independent To become the Suzerain of an Independent, you need to spend 170 Influence and wait dozens of turns for it to become a City-State. During that time, you can spend more Influence to speed up the process. However, other leaders can do the same to undercut you so they can become Suzerain. At the end of the Suzerain process, you’ll be given a gift and the choice to perform various actions. One of those actions is incorporating the City-State, which absorbs it into your empire and becomes one of your settlements. This process takes several more turns, but after it’s complete, the settlement is yours and added to your empire’s total. Before the incorporation process is complete, you might want to use the option to take some of the City-State’s military units. After the City-State is incorporated, you lose access to all of its military forces, including soldiers, commanders, and ships. Capture other Leader’s Districts in war Choosing to keep or raze a settlement Regardless of whether you start a war or are embroiled in an ally’s war, you can take an enemy leader’s town or city for yourself if you capture it. During a war, you can enter the other leader’s borders and attack one of their capitals. You’ll likely meet quite a bit of resistance from enemy forces along the way, but your main goal is to attack the capital tile. When you damage it enough, a message will appear on the screen that says “District Defenses Gone.” After the message appears, you can take any of your military units and stand on the capital’s tile. When this happens, the capital will turn to your colors and be added to your settlement total. Once a settlement is captured, you have the choice to keep it or raze it. Keeping the settlement means it stays in your total and becomes a part of your empire. Razing it keeps it a part of your empire temporarily for 10 turns. After 10 turns, if no other leader captures it, the settlement is destroyed. If you decide to keep a settlement, it will be in a state of unrest for a few turns. This is due to the attack it just suffered, which lowers the settlement’s happiness levels. If you decide to raze the settlement but leave it unguarded, another leader’s forces could go onto the capital tile and claim it for themselves before the razing occurs. Propose peace and negotiate for settlements Negotiating for peace with another leader The final way you’ll acquire settlements is similar to capturing them during wartime. However, in this case, another leader gives you ownership of them when you’re negotiating for peace during a war. If you go to a leader’s portrait who you’re warring with, you’ll see the option to “Propose Peace.” This can only be done several turns after the war has begun. On the peace screen, you can choose to give up some of your settlements and take some of the leader’s settlements. If you’re winning the war, a leader will often hand you one or two settlements without you having to give up anything in return. The best strategy to use here is to wait until you’ve dominated a war for long enough, propose peace, and then take the leader’s best settlements for your empire. For example, a leader could have a settlement directly between two of yours or in an enviable location on the water. If you can avoid it, you generally don’t want to give up any of your settlements unless you’re losing the war or you’re over your settlement limit. As you progress in Civilization VII, your settlement limit will continually increase. However, if you exceed the limit, your current settlements will lose happiness until the limit is met. You can increase your settlement limit by researching new technology and civics and moving to a new act in Civilization VII. 15. Civilization 7 Difficulty Options And How To Change The Difficulty Civilization 7 Difficulty Options And How To Change The Difficulty Sid Meier’s Civilization is known for being one of the most brutal strategy games you can play at the highest difficulty level. Of course, if you’re looking for a more laid-back experience or you’re a new player, the franchise has always let you swap to a lower difficulty. Civilization VII has brought back the difficulty levels and options from previous games, but they’re not a copy-and-paste list of settings. There are several difficulty levels, different map types and lengths, and other advanced settings that you’ll want to know about before hopping into Civilization VII. The guide below explains how to change your difficulty level and everything about customizing your game. How to change difficulty in Civilization 7 The difficulty options in Civilization VII First and foremost, let’s go over how and where to change between the game’s various difficulty levels. Unlike other games, this can’t be done by going to the settings menu and flipping between the different levels. Instead, you have to start up a new game and go through a few menus before you’re able to customize the difficulty level and other options in Civilization VII. However, there’s also a massive caveat with the difficulty level. In our version of the game on PC, we were not able to change the difficulty or set any other game options until after our first game was over. Once we beat one run, we could start a new game and access all the difficulty options. It’s unclear if this is a bug or an intended feature. To change the difficulty level, follow the steps below: Launch Civilization VII and press “New Game” from the main menu Choose your desired Leader and Age and Civilization. It’s highly recommended to always start from the Antiquity Age, as that’s the formal beginning of the game. Click “Continue” at the bottom of the screen to go to the “Confirm” tab Here, you can access all the difficulty settings The top option is your overall difficulty, and here are the different levels: Scribe Governor Viceroy Sovereign Immortal Deity The levels go from easiest to strongest, so for a standard playthrough, select either Governor or Viceroy Once you’re done with the difficulty level, you can customize the options below it before officially starting your game Be warned, once you launch your game, you can’t change the difficulty level or game options again unless you start a new save The victory screen after winning a game As we mentioned before, if you’re loading up your first game of Civilization VII, the option to select your difficulty level might not be there. If what we experienced is intended, then it should take you roughly 10-15 hours of playtime to beat one run of the game on standard difficulty. After that point, you can make a new game and choose your difficulty options. All difficulty options in Civilization VII In addition to the difficulty levels in Civilization VII, you can also change a variety of game options. These include map type, game length, age length, and more. We’ll go more in depth with each of those settings below: Game Speed Online Quick Standard Epic Marathon This determines how long every game takes in turns and the number of overall turns per age. If you want a massive campaign that drags on for 30 hours, choose Marathon. However, most players will likely feel comfortable with Standard or Epic. Map Type Continents Plus Continents Archipelago Fractal Shuffle Terra Incognita Your map type is an important choice, as it controls what lands you’ll be able to traverse. The standard option is Continents Plus, which gives you two continents to explore and some islands in between them. Continents takes out the islands while Archipelago makes it so your continents are broken up by islands. Fractal makes the continents more connected and offers less water between them. Then, Shuffle makes your map type random while Terra Incognita gives you one normal continent and a random second one. Map Size Finally, your map size determines the overall scale of the map you get to explore. Naturally, tiny and small sizes make for quicker games, as there’s less to traverse and do. So, it’s usually recommended for players to stick to the standard map size. Advanced Options Advanced Options give you more difficulty choices Age Length: Abbreviated, Standard, Long Disaster Intensity: Light, Moderate, Catastrophic Crises: Yes or No Advanced Options further customizes your game. The age length setting allows you to make your games shorter or longer depending on what game speed you set. Disasters and crises offer the chance to make things easier or harder on yourself. If you want a harder experience, turn crises on and pump disasters up to catastrophic level. However, neither of these settings will have too big of an effect on the difficulty unless you’re playing on the higher difficulty levels. You can also change the “Player Settings” within the Advanced Options menu. This allows you to set the world leaders you’ll meet during a game and what civilizations they control. While this doesn’t have a huge impact on difficulty, you can make your experience tougher by selecting leaders that are “militaristic.” This makes them more prone to war, which is generally what difficulty levels are based on. 16. Westminster to trial free single sign-on Wi-Fi across central London Westminster to trial free single sign-on Wi-Fi across central London In a move that will relieve those frustrated by connectivity hassles in the ***’s capital city, the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has announced the activation of a network being trialled by Westminster City Council and supported by the Mayor of London, enabling free public Wi-Fi connections with a single sign-on. The key aim of the Connected London Wi-Fi service is to create a seamless roaming experience across the many disparate Wi-Fi networks in London, with the hopes of improving the visitor experience in London and tackling digital and technology inequality for Westminster residents through what the providers say will be the provision of easy-to-access and free internet connectivity. In explaining the need for the service, the city council noted many of Westminster’s businesses, public spaces and cultural attractions already offer free Wi-Fi access, each requiring people to sign up and log in every time they connect. Westminster City Council has been working with the WBA and wireless mobile connectivity provider Guglielmo to bring Connected London Wi-Fi to life. Getting access to the Connected London Wi-Fi network involves scanning a QR code and installing a profile on your phone or tablet, without inputting any data at all. Once a user has installed the profile, the device will automatically securely connect to the WBA’s OpenRoaming network across Westminster and the globe. This is said to safeguard privacy as well as saving time and saving money. Available at more than a million hotspots worldwide, OpenRoaming is said to have become the global standard that Wi-Fi network owners, service providers and others are adding to free users from the need to constantly re-register or re-enter log-in credentials – all while maintaining enterprise-grade security. OpenRoaming supporters include Agreefy, AT&T, Boingo, Charter, Cisco, CityRoam, Cloud4Wi, Comcast, Deutsche Telekom, GlobalReach, Google, Intel, Marriott, MiniMe Labs, SingleDigits and WeFi. Connected London Wi-Fi will begin with a two-month trial at 50 locations across the city, including Strand Aldwych, street markets such as Berwick Street and Maida Hill Market, and also in libraries and community centres. If successful, efforts will be made to facilitate a London-wide expansion with other Wi-Fi network providers to roll it out across the capital. After the trial, further efforts will focus on a solution that moves away from using a QR code. Commenting on the development, Geoff Barraclough, cabinet member for planning and economic development at Westminster City Council, said: “Every one of us has struggled to get high-speed mobile connections in central London, especially in busy areas such as Oxford Street and Covent Garden. That’s why so many people rely on using public space Wi-Fi, but this can be fiddly and difficult to log in to … Workers, tourists and Londoners will all benefit from easier connections to faster mobile broadband. “Connected London Wi-Fi offers free, seamless internet connectivity for people moving around the city. With the continued support from the Mayor of London – and potentially other London boroughs – we hope to roll out this Wi-Fi network across the whole of London, and potentially beyond.” Howard Dawber, deputy mayor of London for business and growth, added: “We want every Londoner and visitor to have the best experience possible – and our increasingly digital world means that’s much easier with a fast, reliable, seamless internet connection. “Connected London Wi-Fi is a vital step forward in our work to improve digital access across the capital, which has seen a massive jump in gigabit connectivity to homes and businesses as we continue building a fairer and better London for everyone.” Source link #Westminster #trial #free #single #signon #WiFi #central #London Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Evan Ferguson transfer: Brighton striker joins West Ham on loan for rest of season Evan Ferguson transfer: Brighton striker joins West Ham on loan for rest of season Brighton striker Evan Ferguson has joined West Ham on loan for the rest of the season. The Republic of Ireland forward will link up with his former Brighton manager Graham Potter, who gave Ferguson his senior debut at the club in 2021. Ferguson, 20, has made just 15 appearances this season, with 11 of those coming from the bench. “I can see and know how big West Ham United is. It was a big opportunity for me to come here. I know the gaffer well and look forward to working under him again,” Ferguson told West Ham TV. “I want to come in and do my best for the club, score goals, and see where we get to.” Ferguson has been sidelined with an ankle injury in recent weeks but returned to action on Saturday, coming on in the 73rd minute of Brighton’s 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. His only goal this season, and his first since November 2023, was in a 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in October. “Evan has had a frustrating 12 months with injuries, and for him to get back to the level he’s capable of and to continue his development he really needs to be playing regularly,” Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said. “This loan gives him that opportunity, and under a manager he knows well. We are looking forward to watching Evan’s progress over the next few months, and we wish him well.” West Ham are currently missing injured forwards Jarrod Bowen, Niclas Fullkrug and Michail Antonio. Ferguson enjoyed a breakthrough season under Potter at Brighton in 2022-23 as he scored six Premier League goals and was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year. “I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring Evan in on loan until the end of the season,” said Potter. “He’s a player we obviously know very well, so I’m grateful to the board for bringing him in.” Source link #Evan #Ferguson #transfer #Brighton #striker #joins #West #Ham #loan #rest #season Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  18. How Tom Brady became the Super Bowl’s $375 million star How Tom Brady became the Super Bowl’s $375 million star The winter of 2022 was the greatest frenzy of sports broadcasting talent in history, with hundreds of millions doled out for NFL commentators. ESPN poached Fox’s top team, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, for a combined total of $165 million. Newcomer to the NFL, Amazon Prime Video signed Al Michaels — who had been discarded after calling his record-tying 11th Super Bowl by NBC — to a contract that included his customary private jet travel to and from games. Even the deals that didn’t happen were exorbitant. Just off a Super Bowl win, Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay was tempted to leave coaching by a potential $20 million a year offer to join Michaels on Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football.” McVay decided to remain on the sidelines. At Fox Sports, top executives, Eric Shanks and Brad Zager, stayed quiet after losing their marquee names, Buck and Aikman. The executives plotted behind the scenes. During that winter, seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady — widely considered the greatest player in history — briefly retired. Fox put him on the top of its game analyst board but considered it a long shot. It believed if the modern-day ***** Ruth or Michael Jordan were available, you had to at least make a call. Even after 40 days, when Brady said he would play quarterback another season, Shanks and Zager didn’t stop their pursuit as they decided that Brady would be worth the wait. Despite expressing no previous interest in broadcasting, Brady did not immediately spike the initial overtures. It got to a point that Brady seemed willing to take a face-to-face meeting. Before Shanks and Zager could set up their secret presentation to Brady that March at Los Angeles’ Hotel Bel-Air, the duo first had to secure the approval of their boss, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch, on what would be the largest sportscasting commentator contract ever. Murdoch gave them the go-ahead to take the meeting. It echoed the aggressive big sports dealmaking of Lachlan’s father, Rupert, who used the NFL to establish Fox as the fourth major broadcast network nearly three decades earlier. On May 10, 2022, slightly more than two months after Lachlan Murdoch gave the green light, he announced to the world on the company’s earnings call that Brady would be Fox Sports’ lead NFL game analyst upon his second and final retirement. No terms were disclosed. Shortly after, it was revealed by sources briefed on the contract that the deal was for 10 years and $375 million. While Fox initially denied the numbers reported that day, Lachlan later told Axios the report was “directionally right.” It turns out, the contract has stock options, according to sources with knowledge of the deal, and Fox has performed well so, at this point, the deal may end up being north of $375 million. Yes, it is Tom Brady, but the “why” of it all has never been answered. Why do it? The short of it is, in Fox Sports’ view, you are signing more than an analyst. “We work in a multibillion-dollar business,” Zager, Fox Sports’ president of production and operations, told The Athletic. “We make decisions every day where value comes from and where to spend that money and get that value. The moment that Tom was available, the importance of the NFL to any media company right now has always been high and probably never higher. What Tom brings with his ability to get sponsors and clients, everybody is motivated to be a part of this brand.” To understand the full sense behind it all, The Athletic spoke to Zager on the record and fellow TV executives, agents and broadcasters on background to figure out: Why is Tom Brady worth $375 million to Fox? Before you can understand the why of Brady’s $375 million deal, the how must be addressed. How did we get here? How did once-a-week announcers get paid more than most of the players they cover? Like most things in the world of sports media, for better or worse, it centers around ESPN. In 2016, ESPN’s then-president John Skipper allowed “Monday Night Football” play-by-play voice Mike Tirico to flee to NBC, where he would stand in the on-deck circle as the heir apparent to Michaels as the play-by-player on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and to Bob Costas as the lead host of NBC’s Olympics coverage. This led to ESPN royally annoying the NFL because ESPN’s post-Tirico booth was never quite right. From Sean McDonough to Joe Tessitore to Steve Levy on play-by-play, it never sounded big enough for the booth that once had Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford and the aforementioned Michaels. McDonough didn’t mesh with lead analyst Jon Gruden, and both were soon gone. With Tessitore, ESPN tried to replicate CBS’ then-sensation, Tony Romo, by recruiting Romo’s Cowboys teammate Jason Witten and putting easy-going former defensive lineman Booger McFarland on a sideline crane, one of the all-time strangest moves in sports media. Levy had player personnel specialist Louis Riddick and journeyman quarterback Brian Griese as his partners. After Skipper exited ESPN in 2017, Jimmy Pitaro was installed and tried to repair ESPN’s strained relationship with the NFL, including a promise of an enhanced broadcast. While the play-by-play announcer is generally the most important for a booth’s success — which is why the Tirico loss had such a far-reaching impact — it was one problem at a time for ESPN. Tony Romo’s early success in the CBS NFL broadcast booth ultimately led to a re-setting of the market for high-end NFL TV talent. (Photo: Matthew Eisman / Getty Images) When Romo’s rookie TV contract for three years and $10 million concluded in 2020, he was looked upon as the next John Madden, the highest compliment an NFL TV game analyst can receive. CBS waited too long to close a deal with Romo, allowing ESPN to have an opening. Pitaro placed a 10-year deal on the table for $140 or $150 million, depending on whom you believe. This was just before the onset of the COVID pandemic in 2020 and the NFL deals with its network partners were soon up. CBS’ parent company, Viacom, was facing the pressure from Wall Street that it was too small to compete with behemoths, like Disney and Comcast. Plus, there was talk that Disney’s Bob Iger might go after CBS’ AFC Sunday package for ABC. With the desire to have Romo on CBS’ side for its renewal negotiations with the NFL and with Viacom not wanting to look weak, it was the perfect storm that delivered the then-highly praised Romo a contract that, all-in, was valued at $180 million for 10 years. The contract, with Romo’s uneven performance over the years, might not have aged well, but it had logic at the time. Romo’s $18 million a year is almost the equivalent of eight million dollars a year in 1993. That was the year Rupert Murdoch made his industry-upending deal with the NFL, doling out an astronomical $1.58 billion over four years to swipe the NFC package from longtime league partner CBS, a strategic coup that resulted in upstart Fox joining NBC, ABC and CBS as broadcast TV stalwarts. Soon after, Fox snatched up Madden on an at-the-time record-breaking four-year, $32 million contract. From then on, Fox’s sports brand has been about star power. In the winter of 2022, before the Brady signing, Fox seemed to be on its heels after sustaining the 1-2 punch of Aikman exiting and then, even more shockingly, Buck. Like CBS, Fox was a smaller company compared to its network competitors. Buck had become a legend at the network by being the voice of the World Series for nearly a quarter century and then successfully succeeding Madden’s partner, Pat Summerall, on Fox’s top NFL team. To land Buck and Aikman, Pitaro, ESPN’s chairman, had already out-Rupert’d Fox Sports that winter, stealing the duo to finally solidify Pitaro’s “Monday Night Football” main broadcast with separate five-year deals. Aikman received $90 million, while Buck took home $75 million. Because Fox didn’t match nor exceed the offers for Buck and Aikman, there was a thought maybe Fox was playing “Moneyball” and would go with a younger, less expensive and lesser-known Greg Olsen to pair with Buck’s replacement, Kevin Burkhardt. (Olsen was Fox’s interim No. 1 NFL analyst and called the 2023 Super Bowl with Burkhardt on Fox, to rave reviews.) Since the overall NFL ratings would be the same if it were Tom Brady, Greg Brady or Jan Brady, the idea of going cheaper made some sense. But that is just not in the Murdoch Fox Sports DNA. “We felt like to not ask the question, to not see if you can bring Tom Brady into your network and your brand, would’ve been us not doing our jobs properly,” Zager said. A rival TV executive said it is supply and demand — “and there is only one Tom Brady out there.” Fox’s Super Bowl broadcast team, which includes play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt (left), analyst Tom Brady (center) and sideline reporter Tom Rinaldi (right) will be drawing enormous attention during the game, in large part due to Brady’s popularity and his role as a first-time Super Bowl game analyst. (Michael Reaves / Getty Images) The Brady deal is about the game, but not really about the game. That’s not to say that Fox doesn’t have high hopes for Brady in the booth. Peyton Manning, Brady’s biggest rival as a player, consistently makes next-level points on the ManningCast, an alternate simulcast to “Monday Night Football,” for which he is paid annually in the neighborhood of Brady. Brady was about the substance and the sizzle, which is Fox’s way. “We are dealing with the craziness of this generational announcer shift in our industry, and I think you start with credibility and with people that you think can bring something to the brand and the broadcast that nobody else can, and I don’t know if there is anybody that can do that more than Tom Brady, if you’re putting together that list,” Zager said. From Aikman to Fox’s top pregame show, the network seemingly has a dress code for its analysts — no yellow Hall of Fame jacket, no entry. Terry Bradshaw, Michael Strahan, Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson have been fixtures for decades on the Fox NFL Sunday pregame. The NFL is the biggest entertainment vehicle in the United States, accounting for 85-95 percent of the top-rated shows each year. Fox pays the NFL $2.2 billion per year, which includes half the late-afternoon Sunday windows, usually the most-watched regular-season TV window. It has playoff games, including the NFC Championship every season, and Fox is in the Super Bowl rotation. (In a scheduling quirk due to the onset of new TV deals, this Sunday will be Fox’s second Super Bowl in the last three years. Fox’s next one will not occur until February 2029.) Production costs, according to executives, run around $100 to $125 million per season for a network. The TV talent-agent talk has always been that the announcers deserve more, given the context of the billion-dollar league contracts. Using this math, Romo’s roughly 600 percent raise from his third-year rookie TV deal to his fourth-year second contract can be rationalized as a rounding error on a network’s overall NFL TV expenditure. When Lachlan Murdoch announced the Brady agreement on that May 10, 2022, earnings call, Murdoch specifically pointed out that Brady’s role included being “an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives.” This has played out beyond the NFL games. Brady has been live and done voiceovers on his alma mater Michigan versus Ohio State matchups on Fox. He has shown up in an IndyCar promotional spot. He has participated in the United Football League, which is partly owned by Fox. “You saw him handing out the trophy for the UFL last year,” Zager said. “All of a sudden, it is not just a spring league giving out a trophy. It is Tom Brady handing out a trophy at the UFL (championship game). The credibility that that gave that league at that moment, I’ll let others put whatever value they want.” For Fox Sports, Brady has brought in new sponsors, including a multimillion contract with Duracell, according to sources briefed on Fox’s advertising sales. Fox sells the same amount of commercial inventory with or without Brady, but if Brady is needed to play a round of golf or make a call, he is about as good of a closer as you could find. From all accounts, Brady has been a very good teammate, which is helped by the fact Fox treats him like a Lombardi Trophy encased in protective glass. Though Brady stated as a player that he had no real interest in being a broadcaster, his path is not unusual. Nearly all the modern-day all-time quarterbacks — Joe Montana, Dan Marino and Joe Namath to name a few — have at least dabbled in TV. Brady is just at another level, as he is considered the best QB of them all. The TV game analyst role is not worth $375 million, but, after the market changed, if you want Tom Brady, that is what it costs. 19. Fortnite Will Get More DC Collabs After Multiversus Shutdown, It’s Claimed Fortnite Will Get More DC Collabs After Multiversus Shutdown, It’s Claimed A known Fortnite insider has claimed that DC collabs for Fortnite will increase after Multiversus has been shut down. ShiinaBR, known for Fortnite leaks and rumours, spoke about Warner Bros.’s “new tactic” for DC in gaming after Multiversus was discontinued. The insider revealed that due to Multiversus, DC had stopped collaborating with other games. However, since the title has announced its shutdown, its new strategy is to “double down on collabs with other games again,” this list includes Epic’s popular battle royale, Fortnite. Fortnite has always had DC skins, but the collaboration is nowhere near how they have partnered with Marvel, with the latter getting new skins with each new movie or series. Fortnite already has some iconic DC skins, such as the Joker, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman (multiple variants of him), and other heroes and villains. However, players would like to see a Fortnite season themed around the DC universe, especially with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCEU. Multiversus announced its official shutdown last week, with the game’s fifth season serving as the final update for the game. The last time to play Multiversus online will be May 30. After that, the game can only be accessed through the local gameplay mode, which allows you to fight solo against AI opponents or with up to three friends. In other news, Fortnite Festival is seemingly bringing Sabrina Carpenter next season. Also, the game might receive Red Hulk, Falcon, and Superman skins next. 20. Government sets out cyber security practice code to stoke AI growth Government sets out cyber security practice code to stoke AI growth The government has set out an artificial intelligence (AI)-focused cyber security code of practice for *** businesses, which it describes it as a “world first”. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said the standard will protect AI systems from cyber attack, boost productivity and set up a global coalition to tackle a worldwide cyber skills shortage. It is the latest salvo in the government’s bid to boost AI as the fuel for economic growth, repeating similar rhetoric from the previous government. The Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI will, said the government, help to create a global standard in the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) that sets baseline security requirements. A specific standard is needed for AI, as distinct from other forms of software, because of such security risks as data poisoning, model obfuscation, indirect prompt injection, as well as differences in the operations of data management, according to DSIT. The code will, in the government’s view, back up its overall plan for change, whose elements include making kickstarting economic growth as a political priority, with an AI opportunities action plan as part of that. Part of the aim of the plan is to be on a par with France, whose National AI Commission outlined 25 recommendations for the development of an AI-driven economy in 2024. Minister for cyber security Feryal Clark said: “The *** is leading the way in setting global benchmarks for secure innovation, ensuring AI is developed and deployed in an environment that protects critical systems and data which are central to delivering our plan for change. “This will not only create the opportunities for businesses to thrive, secure in the knowledge that they can be better protected than ever before but support them in delivering cutting-edge AI products that drive growth, improve public services, and put Britain at the forefront of the global AI economy,” she said. The government has also published an implementation guide for the code. It urges developers to review the guide to confirm what requirements are specified for different types of AI systems. The code is underpinned by 13 secure software development principles. These include designing AI systems for security, as well as functionality and performance, enabling human responsibility for AI systems, securing infrastructures and software supply chains, and ensuring proper data and model disposal. In support of the code, Ollie Whitehouse, chief technology officer at the NCSC, said: “The new code of practice, which we have produced in collaboration with global partners, will not only help enhance the resilience of AI systems against malicious attacks, but foster an environment in which *** AI innovation can thrive. “The *** is leading the way by establishing this security standard, fortifying our digital technologies, benefiting the global community and reinforcing our position as the safest place to live and work online.” The code was published at the end of a week when the National Audit Office published a report on *** government cyber resilience that found 58 critical government IT systems, assessed in 2024, had significant gaps in cyber resilience, and that the government does not know how vulnerable at least 228 “legacy” IT systems, across central departments, are to cyber attack. It also found that one in three cyber security roles in government were vacant or filled by temporary – and so more expensive – staff in 2023-24. The code will be submitted to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s Securing AI Committee, where it will, the *** government said, be used to develop a global standard. The *** has also played a part, it said, in the launch of an International Coalition on Cyber Security Workforces, alongside Japan, Singapore and Canada. The “coalition” – which came out of a summit held at Wilton Park in West Sussex in September 2024 – will, it is said, help countries work together to tackle cyber threats and address the global cyber skills gap. Francis Pera of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said, “Yesterday, they were able to identify 11 separate human remains. As part of this effort, as part of their preparatory operation for dive.” The National Transportation Safety Board says some of the most trusted location data shows the ****** happening at just over 300 feet higher than the 200 feet ceiling the ****** Hawk helicopter was supposed to be flying under. But the tower radar that air traffic control was looking at showed the chopper at 200 feet. NTSB Lead Investigator Brice Banning said, “Initial data indicates that he may have seen 200 feet. That needs to be verified. Our ATC group is working it.” Banning also said the jet’s cockpit voice recorder captured sound moments before the ******. Banning said, “The crew had a verbal reaction and FDR (Flight Data Recorder) data showed the plane beginning to increase its pitch, sounds of impact were audible about one second later, followed by the end of the recording.” Deadly Medical Jet ****** in Philadelphia And there are new details about the medical jet ****** that occurred in Philadelphia on Friday evening. The cockpit voice recorder has been found eight feet down inside a massive crater where the Learjet made impact. The surrounding scene was littered with burned-out cars. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said, “There is substantial impact on the entire community, the debris field extends four or five blocks.” An 11-year-old and her 31-year-old mother, along with 4 crew members, were killed in the ******. One person on the ground was also killed, and 22 were injured, some critically. The jet was returning to Mexico after the child was treated at Shriner’s hospital. Testimony from Tragedy Meanwhile, as the nation continues to mourn the 67 lives lost in Washington, Michael Simpson, a friend of two of the victims, Bob and Lori Schrock of Kiowa, Kansas, told CBN News about their powerful influence in his life, their deep faith in Jesus, how they lived with an eternal perspective, and what Bob’s message would have been. “‘We’re here for a short amount of time and eternity is what matters.’ That’s what Bob would tell me. I know that that’s what he would want the world to know. It’s like, true peace and hope can be found in a relationship with Christ. 22. Saquon Barkley is a superhero for the Eagles. His origin story is straight out of a comic book, too Saquon Barkley is a superhero for the Eagles. His origin story is straight out of a comic book, too The man who has led the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl run, the man who has been the most exciting player in football, almost quit the sport just before his career was about to take off. That was 14 years ago, in Eastern Pennsylvania, before Saquon Barkley became SAQUON! — a hulking, hurdling blur with superhero-like muscles and an origin story that feels right out of Marvel, too. Brian Gilbert, former head coach, Whitehall (Pa.) High: I don’t want to exaggerate, but the varsity coaching staff and I literally brought him in because we’d heard after his freshman year of high school he was gonna quit football. Barkley was frustrated, struggling with his self-confidence. Some kids had matured faster than him. Sophomore year, he didn’t play varsity because his best friend was ahead of him. Saquon had to work. That’s how he’s wired and why he’s so great. I said, “Listen, you may not be the best one right now, but we see potential in you. We see how fast you are. You’ve got to give it more time.” He said, “Coach, I’m so skinny. If I come up and play varsity football, I’m gonna get broken in half.” We said, “Just get in the weight room and get stronger.” Thank God he listened! Nick Shafnisky, former varsity Whitehall High QB: He was always the freakiest athlete and the nicest human. But it seemed like there was always someone a year or two older who was a little bit better. He was never “The Guy,” as crazy as that sounds, because now he is the epitome of “The Guy.” Gilbert: He played a little varsity as a sophomore (in 2012) at the end of that season. That summer we went to Rutgers as a team camp. His improvements that he made that offseason are different from any other athlete I’ve ever seen. He had a tremendous camp. (Then-Rutgers head coach) Kyle Flood brings him and me into his office and offers him. He said it was based on what he saw that day and the film they’d watched — which was JV film, because that was all we had. Kyle Flood, Texas OL coach and former Rutgers head coach: Norries Wilson (Rutgers’ running backs coach) did a phenomenal job of identifying him early. We thought this kid was a complete stud. You could see how explosive he was. Shafnisky: Saquon committed to Rutgers and he legitimately thought they offered the wrong guy. He knows he’s good, but he doesn’t know he’s great. He called us and said, “I think I got an offer.” I said, “What do you mean you think? Normally, that’s pretty clear.” He goes, “No, I think they messed up.” So he commits because he thought they were gonna take the offer back. Gilbert: Rutgers gave him that offer, and Saquon being Saquon says, “I need to work my tail off to prove that I earned that scholarship.” Barkley formally committed to Rutgers months later, on Sept. 7, 2013, in his junior year. The following month, he took an unofficial visit to Penn State and the Nittany Lions offered him. After that season, Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien resigned to become the coach of the Houston Texas and was replaced by James Franklin. Barkley flipped to Penn State in February 2014. Charles Huff, Southern Miss head coach, former Penn State RB coach: He wasn’t even the No. 1 RB in the state of Pennsylvania when we got there. Andre Robinson, at Bishop McDevitt High School (in Harrisburg), was. Saquon was like the No. 2 or 3 guy. No one on the staff looked at his high school film and thought this guy was gonna be a generational talent. It was, “This guy will be pretty good. Let’s take him, but we’ve gotta have Andre.” Sean Spencer, Texas A&M defensive line coach, former Penn State D-line coach: I called him. I don’t know if it was that day or a day later, but he committed pretty quickly. I think he grew up a Penn State kid. Gilbert: As far as why he flipped so fast, he went up to a White Out game (in 2013). I think he was like, “Oh. My. God! This is night and day from Rutgers to Penn State.” Shafnisky: One million percent. That White Out game changed his life. Gilbert: Saquon is such a pleaser, and doesn’t want to disappoint anybody. He asked me how to tell Rutgers. I said, “We’re gonna call coach Wilson and tell him.” He said, “Can you tell him?” I said, “No! You’re gonna tell him. You’re gonna feel better, like you’ve achieved something by doing this. It’s gonna be hard, but you can do it.” He was so nervous, but I think that little step of knowing that he hates disappointing people but sometimes having to do what’s best for your own good (helped). It made him grow up a bit. Spencer: A while later, he called me and said, “I just got a call from Ohio State.” Same with Notre Dame. Urban Meyer called him. Brian Kelly called him. Saquon didn’t waver. He never went on another official visit. Never went on another unofficial visit. He asked me if he could go on five official visits to Penn State because he didn’t want to go to any other school. I said the NCAA won’t allow that. Flood: I would’ve loved to have coached him, but even now when I watch him, I root for him because I know what a great kid he is. After rushing for 1,506 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior at Whitehall, Barkley scored 31 touchdowns and ran for 1,856 as a senior, averaging almost nine yards per carry. His scouting report on 247Sports, grading on a scale of 1-10, ranked his speed and build as “7” and his tackle-breaking and power as “6.” James Franklin, Penn State head coach: To be honest with you, even up until his senior year, he wasn’t that highly thought of. He was a good player, but nothing crazy. Then he had a dominant senior year. Then he played in some East-West All-Star Game and they didn’t even start him at tailback. He played fullback in the game. Spencer: James and I went out to see him play early his senior year. He had like over 200 yards of offense and four touchdowns in the first half, and I was like, “I think we can leave now.” I was texting the pilot. Our job here was done. Huff: Spence texts me, “We’re leaving.” I said, what do you mean you’re leaving? The game started at 7 and it’s only 7:38. Franklin: I have a cool picture from me and Spence standing on the sideline. A local photographer shot a picture of us from over our shoulders with him in the background. I have it hanging in my basement. Saquon Barkley defied his early career narrative and dominated during his three years in Happy Valley. (Jennifer Stewart / Getty Images) Barkley ended up as the nation’s No. 119 prospect, the 13th-best running back in the class of 2015. He was part of the recruiting class that helped Franklin return the Nittany Lions to national prominence. It did not take long for Barkley to show his new teammates that he was more special than anyone had realized. Franklin: Have you heard the story about the track deal when he was in high school? Gilbert: The story is legendary. Franklin: He wouldn’t miss opportunities to do something special. Gilbert: I was at the district track meet that Whitehall hosts every year. At the 100-meter dash, this girl ran and finished first, but there was a mistake with the clock, so they had to re-do it. And when they re-did it, she came in second. Saquon witnessed all this, so he went over and gave her his gold medal and said, “You deserve this.” People at local pubs and restaurants will ask if it’s really true. Yep, it is. Huff: For me realizing he was special, it was probably the first day we were in full pads in summer camp. He ran a basic inside zone play. He hit the A-gap, then made a jump cut all the way back to the edge and went like 70 yards. Everyone’s going crazy. He comes right back to me and says, “Should I have pressed it a little more?” That’s where the legend of Saquon started. Franklin: I remember the run from the Oklahoma drill where the three O-linemen basically blocked nobody and the three D-linemen came through and he shook ’em all. That was the welcome to Saquon Barkley moment. Have you seen that? All these guys, when you’re recruiting them, say they wanna play as freshmen, but their actions don’t align with that. His actions did. He was super inquisitive, constantly asking players and coaches questions before and after practice. He was that guy. And on top of that, it was the numbers he put up in the weight room. Freakish. Still, Barkley actually didn’t make his first start until late October of his freshman season, after proving to be impossible to keep off the field. He ran for 115 yards on just 12 carries in his second game, against Buffalo. The next week he ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns against Rutgers. Spencer: He gets in the game when we’re playing Buffalo. He hurdles some guy, like three people, goes 50 or 60 yards, does a backflip — all this Saquon stuff. All my D-linemen started hugging me. When I saw Huff put him in, I said, “All right, guys. Here we go!” We knew from practice that this guy was really special. I’d pause the film and ask them, “Do you think we could tackle him here?’ They’d be like, “NO!” Huff: In the first year, we kept trying to protect him. He had unbelievable physical tools, but we were conscious of throwing him to the wolves too soon because we didn’t want to scar him. After that Buffalo game, we were like, “OK, we gotta play this guy.” Then it was, how do I get him ready to play in the Big Ten without throwing too much at him? Spencer: I went into our (position) room and went up to the board. I wrote up the number 26 and circled it. (My D-linemen) asked what it was. I said, “This is called the Theory of 26. It means if any of you motherf—–****** this dude in practice and hurt him, you’re gonna have hell to pay. Don’t touch him. He’s like a quarterback. Leave him alone.” I didn’t want one of them big-assed dudes falling on him. In Week 5, Penn State visited Ohio State and got blown out, but Barkley ran for 194 yards. The following week, he started against Maryland. He finished the season with 1,076 yards and seven touchdowns. As dazzling of a debut as Barkley had, he felt like he could’ve been much better, and that meant he had a lot more work to do. Huff: After his freshman year, he said he wanted to be the best running back ever. “What do I need to do to get better?” We went back and looked at some of the long runs where he got run down. It happened against Rutgers, against Michigan. We went back and did a series on looking at winning in open space, with breaking tackles and making guys miss. Saquon Barkley: You try to improve in every aspect of the game. I watched film of myself. I did a self-evaluation. I wanted to get better at finishing the run. Break loose and make another guy miss to get into the end zone. Eliminate that next play because any time you have to line up again you give the defense another opportunity. You can have a muffed snap. Anything. My freshman year, I was explosive, but I didn’t have true speed. My 20- and 30-yard burst was really good, but when I got to go 60 or 100, I didn’t really have another gear. I really wanted to increase my 40. Huff: I called our track coach and asked about a bunch of things that offseason, like how to elongate your stride without losing your form. I still have videos that I’ll show our running backs of a young Saquon in the sandpit running in place for 30, 45 seconds, of him sprinting in the sandpit and turning around and sprinting full speed out of the pit. I’m not saying I’m a running back czar. It was strictly trial and error. He was helping me and I was helping him. We started jumping rope. We did some soccer ball drills because in all of athletics, who has the quickest feet? Soccer players and boxers. Soccer ball alternating taps quick and as long as he could. He’d get 100 taps in. He still does some of this stuff today. He’ll send me videos in the summer, with a laughing emoji. Barkley: We always talked about that Mamba mentality. Huff helped install that mentality and that confidence in me. He definitely made me work for it, but he knew my goal and the goals that we created for each other, and he held me accountable. He pushed me every single day to be the best person and player that I can be, and I’m forever thankful for him. Huff: He challenged me to be a better running back coach because he wanted to be a better running back. He was really big into the mental game. We had some meetings addressing some things: How do you go out and challenge yourself even when the competition already says you’re the best? Then, it started to rub off into fall camp. In 2016, Barkley ran for 1,496 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Nittany Lions went 11-3 and made it to the Rose Bowl, finishing No. 7 in the country — their best season in 11 years. Huff: Going into the next year, I told him, “You’ve got to be prepared to have the biggest letdown season of your life.” I said, “Now teams are not gonna let you beat (them).” You have to be able to find success in the little things. Maybe you don’t rush for 200 yards and three touchdowns, but you can eliminate a few negative plays, improve your pass blocking, get better at catching the ball coming out of the backfield. Develop the other parts of your game. He was like, “OK, I’m good with that.” Barkley signed with the divisional rival of the team that drafted him and has led the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl. (Emilee Chinn / Getty Images) In 2017, Barkley ran for 225 fewer yards than he did in 2016 but posted more yards from scrimmage (1,903 with 21 touchdowns) in one fewer game because he became such a weapon in the passing game. Barkley became the only player in school history to gain 3,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving; he also finished as Penn State’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (43) and total touchdowns (53). The New York Giants drafted him with the second pick in 2018. He won Offensive Rookie of the Year and put up two spectacular seasons before suffering a knee injury in the second game of the 2020 season. Spencer: I was with him again with the Giants (as the defensive line coach) when he got his (torn ACL) injury against the Bears in 2020. He looked at me in the locker room and said, “Why me, Coach?” We were both about to tear up. I said, “You’re gonna come back stronger.” It was emotional. I’ve known this dude since he was 17 years old. Barkley recovered, but the Giants continued to sputter. Last March, Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Eagles. Playing for the Giants’ division rival, Barkley tore up the NFL, going for a league-high 2,005 rushing yards — almost 700 more than his previous career-best. All of that work that started in Happy Valley to help not get caught? It worked. He’s had nine runs of 50 yards or longer this year. No one else in the NFL has more than three. His seven touchdown runs of 60-plus yards are only three fewer than the entire rest of the league has combined, according to Pro Football Focus. Spencer: When that kid (Eagles backup running back Will Shipley) breaks that run at the end of the playoff game, and you see how excited Saquon is for him? That’s who he is. The way he is now, the same way he was in high school. Gilbert: It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy than Saquon. And that doesn’t happen overnight. That’s upbringing, coming from good roots and from a community where you’re expected to work hard to get what you want. Spencer: He’s still the same guy who will go to high school games and sign every autograph. If it’s 100 people, he’ll sign every one. They just don’t make them like that any more. The absolute care and quality Camouflaj has put into this title is breathtaking. Being able to fully adapt every aspect that the series fans expect from Arkham games into VR is astonishing. As well as being able to fit in a full length, unique story into the timeline without ruining the other games should be applauded. AI won The Beatles a Grammy 55 years after they broke up AI won The Beatles a Grammy 55 years after they broke up With the help of modern machine learning technology, The Beatles were able to release their song “” in late 2023. The song contains vocals recorded from around 50 years ago and a guitar track from 1995, but technological limitations at the time prevented it from seeing the light of day without serious audio issues. Today, after being in November 2024 for two Grammys, “Now and Then” for Best Rock Performance. When the demo was first recorded, John Lennon’s singing and piano were on the same audio track, and separating them was impossible. Fortunately, AI can now do that without much bleed or loss. The surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, were able to complete the song by recording new bass and drum parts and releasing it almost 30 years later.
