  1. Drone attack kills youngest British fighter in Ukraine minutes into first mission Drone attack kills youngest British fighter in Ukraine minutes into first mission A Russian drone attack killed a British teenager on his first combat mission after joining the Ukrainian army. James Wilton, who had recently turned 18 and was from Huddersfield, is the youngest Briton to have died defending Ukraine from Vladimir Putin’s invasion. While walking across a field with a group of international fighters delivering supplies to the front line on July 23 last year, he was spotted and chased by three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Just 30m from safety, he was caught by one of them, which exploded. The blast killed him, a former comrade told The Sun newspaper. ‘First and last mission’ Jason, a US volunteer who was with Wilton when he died, said: “Once the drone was on him, James never stood a chance. “It was James’s first and last mission.” The group had been carrying 60kg packs and were moving in pairs when they were detected. Jason said: “We had to cross an open field with no trees, no cover, nothing, to resupply other soldiers. “I was team leader and there were six of us traversing in groups of two, 20m apart. Myself and James were the last two.” Confirming his death, the Foreign Office said it “provided consular assistance to the family of a British man who died in Ukraine”. Four months before his death, Wilton flew from Manchester to Ukraine to join the fight against Russian forces. Before leaving, he had taken time out after finishing a two-year course in animal ******** and land care. Wilton had no prior military experience, but received a ****** course from Ukrainian instructors on how to handle weapons before he was posted to Ukraine’s Second International Legion. ‘I’ll never get over this’ Graham Wilton, his father, had asked his son not to go, but Wilton was resolute in his determination to fight for Ukraine. Mr Wilton told The Sun: “I’ll never get over this. I didn’t want him to go but his heart was set on it. He wanted to help Ukraine. “I’ve been told bits of the story of how he died, but have struggled to deal with it and wish we could have swapped places because he had his whole life in front of him.” Mr Wilton, who drove his son to Manchester Airport for his journey to the war zone, later travelled to Ukraine for his son’s cremation and is now considering returning to scatter his ashes. He said: “It’s taken a while to process James’s death. But I think it’s time that some kind of public tribute was paid and it’s good to be finally talking about what happened.” James Wilton’s ********. His father, Graham, said he would ‘never get over’ his son’s death – PA Wire Since Russia invaded Ukraine, at least 16 Britons are known to have been killed in the conflict. Last month, ex-British Army sniper Alexander Garms-Rizzi, 23, was killed in Ukraine while trying to save his fellow soldiers. Garms-Rizzi, formerly of The Royal Welsh, acted as “bait” to distract Russian forces, which allowed three Ukrainian troops to escape. He was fatally struck by a Russian drone in “no man’s land” while running in circles to draw fire away from his comrades. Last November, another British volunteer, Callum Tindal-Draper, 22, from Cornwall, was killed in action. He died while defending an observation point targeted by Russian forces. 2. Battlefield 6: everything we know so far Battlefield 6: everything we know so far Table of Contents Table of Contents Release speculation Platforms Trailers Gameplay Preorder The genre of realistic, competitive FPS games is dominated by a few titles. Call of Duty has become synonymous with multiplayer shooters for over a decade now, but Battlefield at one point was a strong rival. Unlike CoD, we don’t see a new Battlefield game on the list of upcoming video games every year, so the franchise isn’t always top of mind outside of its hardcore fanbase. The last entry was a disappointment for almost everyone, so we’ve been waiting for the announcement of the next entry to start fresh, somewhat like Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Perfect Dark. We have only seen the tiniest glimpse at the future, but here is the full loadout on everything we know about what we’re calling Battlefield 6. Release speculation EA We know that EA and Battlefield Studios are gearing up to bring players into various playtests for Battlefield 6 thanks to the Battlefield Labs program. That said, it was made abundantly clear that when these tests do start, the game will be in a pre-alpha state. How long a game is in pre-alpha before launch can vary, but we wouldn’t expect to see Battlefield 6 for around two years. Platforms If the platforms available to test Battlefield 6 are a good indication, then the game will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Depending on development time, it might be a cross-gen game with the PS6 but that is pure speculation. Please enable Javascript to view this content Trailers EA didn’t give us a true Battlefield 6 trailer but snuck in a sneaky tease of the game when announcing Battlefield Labs. The pre-alpha footage appears to be set in modern times, as opposed to the past or near-future like the last entries. The location may be somewhere in the Middle East, but it is difficult to say for sure at this juncture. Gameplay EA That pre-alpha footage doesn’t hold still on any single shot for long, but does highlight many of the core aspects we want from Battlefield 6. There are intense shootouts in urban environments with tanks and dozens of soldiers involved, as well as a ton of dynamic destruction. Explosions scatter rubble, kick up smoke, and even collapse segments of buildings. We only see a rifle and RPG for weapons, and no shots of actually driving any vehicles, but it wouldn’t be a Battlefield game without tons of weapons and controllable vehicles so we’re sure they will be included. Preorder Battlefield 6 isn’t technically confirmed or announced yet so there won’t be any preorder information for a while. We will keep you fully updated as more information comes out. 3. Trump signs order to establish a sovereign wealth fund that he says could buy TikTok Trump signs order to establish a sovereign wealth fund that he says could buy TikTok US President Donald Trump speaks to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on Feb. 3, 2025, in Washington, DC. Jim Watson | AFP | Getty Images President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order that outlines plans to for a government-run sovereign wealth fund to serve as an economic development tool and perhaps be used to buy TikTok. Among the aims for the fund would be developing infrastructure such as airports and highways, and it could help the U.S. extend its influence in areas such as Panama and Greenland. “We’re going to stand this thing up within the next 12 months. We’re going to monetize the asset side of the U.S. balance sheet for the American people,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said during a media parley. “There’ll be a combination of liquid assets, assets that we have in this country as we work to bring them out for the American people.” There were no other details for a fund Trump said during his campaign could back “great national endeavors.” He has said tariffs could help provide funding. Other nations use taxes on natural resources, financial transactions carbon use as funding mechanisms. A discussed deal in which the U.S. would become a partner in social media platform TikTok would be one potential use, Trump said. The app was taken offline briefly amid security concerns, but Trump signed an order allowing it back for a 75-day ******* during which it likely will have to divest itself of ******** interests. Though the idea of such a U.S. fund has been brought up before, the vehicles are generally used by smaller nations with vast natural resources as well as fiscal surpluses to deploy — unlike the U.S., which has been running massive budget deficits. Nations with the funds include China, Norway and Singapore. A U.S. fund could help it compete with those countries and might make the government less dependent on issuing Treasury debt to raise money. Norway has the largest sovereign wealth fund, with more than $1.7 trillion in assets, according to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute. The China Investment Corp follows with $1.3 trillion. These funds are involved in global financial markets through investments in stocks, bonds and real estate, along with stakes in infrastructure and private equity. Critics say a lack of transparency can lead to conflicts and corruption if there are not strict governance rules. 4. PS6 Reportedly Bringing Back One Feature That Is Every Game Collector’s Dream PS6 Reportedly Bringing Back One Feature That Is Every Game Collector’s Dream As gamers, we are hardly ever satisfied with the available technology and always look forward to what’s coming next. While debates go on about which gaming console is better, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are already developing new systems. PlayStation 6 is under development. (Image via Sony) That’s right, the PS6 is currently in development, but Sony still hasn’t shared many details about the console or what it could deliver when it finally hits the shelves. However, that hasn’t stopped speculation, and one former PlayStation executive believes the PS6 will still feature a disc drive. PlayStation executive believes PS6 won’t drop disc drive support The next PlayStation console might feature a disc drive. (Image via Sony) There’s no denying the fact that digital gaming has grown at a shocking rate in the last couple of years, forcing us all to abandon physical copies. However, this shift has led to many wondering if the next generation of consoles, particularly the PS6, will abandon physical games altogether. In an interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Shawn Layden, former CEO of PlayStation, was asked whether the PS6 will abandon discs and adopt a completely digital approach. Since we’ve seen Sony abandoning the disc drive with the controversial PS5 Pro, it seems like it would be an obvious move. However, Layden opened up about how big Sony’s market is around the globe, and it can’t afford to drop discs. Sure, Xbox might have had success with this route, but it’s due to the fact that its market is much smaller. On the other hand, PlayStation’s gaming influence is over hundreds of countries. According to Layden, PS6 could lose out on millions of potential customers around the world if it doesn’t bring a dedicated disc drive. It’s not just that; the former PlayStation executive also pointed out that athletes travel with their consoles, and military personnel play games without internet connections. These examples point out why the PS6 featuring disc support is necessary. When is PS6 coming out? PS6 is still years away from release. (Image via Sony) Back in February 2024, Sony President and CFO Hiroki Totoki stated that PlayStation 5 is already in the “latter half” of its life cycle. The statement, which Sony SVP Namoki Matsuka reiterated, suggested that the next PlayStation console could hit the market in 2028. However, there’s a chance that PS6 might be released even earlier. On January 17th, NeoGAF user Kepler_L2 reported that PS6 is currently designed complete and is in “pre-si[ilcon] validation.” The user has previously shared many accurate details about the PS5 Pro before its release. These reports suggest that Sony is currently testing the console’s hardware digitally to make sure it’s working as intended before producing the first physical protocol. The very first iteration of the console’s SoC is said to be code-named AO, and its tapeout is scheduled for 2025. In the past, Sony has always started the SoC tapeout process two years before pushing out the silicons for mass-produced consoles. If history ends up repeating itself, we could see PS6 dropping sometime in late 2027. With that said, do you think PS6 should abandon disc support? Let us know in the comments below. 5. Tesla shares fall 5% on tariffs, drop in Europe vehicle registrations Tesla shares fall 5% on tariffs, drop in Europe vehicle registrations Oslo Taxi’s Tesla model Y (L) and the NIO ET5 electric vehicle from Nio Inc, a ******** multinational electric car manufacturer, drive through the Norwegian capital Oslo, on September 27, 2024. Jonathan Nackstrand | Afp | Getty Images Tesla shares slid about 5% on Monday after President Donald Trump announced plans for extensive tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China. The stock was also hit by declining registrations for Tesla vehicles in France, Sweden and Norway. Tesla fell more than its megacap peers, with Apple’s stock suffering the next biggest drop at more than 3%. President Donald Trump over the weekend slapped 10% tariffs on goods imported from China, where Tesla produces about half its automobiles. While the tariffs are sure to hit all automakers’ supply chains, Tesla operates factories in the U.S., Berlin and Shanghai, enabling it to sidestep some of the challenges faced by other electric vehicle makers. During Tesla’s earnings call last week, Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja said the company’s profitability could take a hit if the new administration implements tariffs. “Over the years we’ve tried to localize our supply chain in every market, but we are still reliant on parts from across the world for all our businesses,” Taneja said. He said the “imposition of tariffs” would “have an impact on our business and profitability.” As for falling registrations In Europe, the drop was steepest in France, one of the continent’s largest EV markets. Tesla registrations there fell 63% in January from the same month a year earlier, according to data tracked by industry association PFA (Plateforme Automobile). That was a much steeper drop than the decline in electric cars and in overall automotive sales in France. In Sweden and Norway, Tesla sales for January fell 44% and 38%, respectively, Reuters reported. In addition to the tariffs and news about declining registrations, Tesla over the weekend also cut lease prices for its base Model 3 sedan and unpainted steel Cybertruck vehicles, according to listings for customers in the U.S. viewed by CNBC. An independent researcher who publishes his Tesla forecasts under the handle “Troy Teslike” on Patreon wrote, in a post on X, that he only expects Tesla to sell about 21,000 units of its Cybertruck in 2025. “The order backlog is gone,” he wrote. “Tesla ended 2024 with 10,600 unsold Cybertrucks because of too much production and low demand. The backlog dropped to zero on November 24, 2024, when Tesla’s order page in the US showed that customers could order and take delivery of a Cybertruck on the same day.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk was a major backer of Trump’s presidential effort, contributing $290 million to Republican candidates and causes in 2024, most of that directed at returning Trump to the White House. Musk also recently endorsed Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. As CNBC previously reported, Musk’s incendiary rhetoric and political activism have contributed to a decline in Tesla’s brand value and reputation. Tesla’s brand value fell 26% in 2024, according to consulting firm Brand Finance. 7. The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Introduce A Character Who Was Only Mentioned In The Games The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Introduce A Character Who Was Only Mentioned In The Games HBO’s The Last of Us will soon return for its second season as the live-action show begins adapting The Last of Us Part II. And while the upcoming season will introduce the major characters from that sequel, it will also feature the debut of a character who was only mentioned in the game. “There is a pretty prominent character that is talked a lot about in the game, similar to what we did with Frank [Murray Bartlett] in season 1, that is in this season,” said showrunner and Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann during a feature interview with EW. “There’s a very, very cool casting that I hope we can talk about soon.” Druckmann and his co-showrunner Craig Mazin didn’t share any additional details about the mystery character or who would play them. They did, however, explain why the show’s depiction of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) won’t be as overtly muscular as her in-game counterpart. The showrunners also teased some non-linear storytelling in the second season. “We certainly are going to mess around with time the way it was in the source material, but as Neil said, we messed around in ways that we felt were appropriate for the show,” explained Mazin. “When I say ‘messed around,’ I mean scientifically determined in a narrative way what we thought would be most impactful.” HBO hasn’t set a specific date for The Last of Us Season 2 yet, but we do know it will arrive in April. On April 3, The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be arriving on PC. Naughty Dog hasn’t officially announced The Last of Us Part 3, but it is likely in development alongside the company’s next new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. 8. Pupils describe ‘terrifying chaos’ of day Pupils describe ‘terrifying chaos’ of day BBC Teachers Liz Hopkin (left) and Fiona Elias (right) and a pupil were injured at the stabbing at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in April It had been a normal April day at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman until the Carmarthenshire school playground was suddenly thrown into chaos. “I saw a girl take out a knife. Everyone was running, everyone was screaming. It was so scary,” one pupil recalls. Shouting “I’m going to kill you”, a teenager had stabbed teachers Fiona Elias and Liz Hopkin, as well as a fellow pupil at the secondary school in Ammanford. The 14-year-old girl, who cannot be named due to her age, has now been found guilty of attempted *******. The teenager previously admitted stabbing three people and of having a knife in school, but denied attempted *******. It is a day that many pupils at the school, and their parents, will never forget. Lacey, 12, was outside at the time of the stabbing and saw the incident unfolding. “It all started when I was on the playground at school,” she said. “There was a group of people with their phones out, filming something. I thought it was probably some pupils having a silly fight. “But I saw a girl with a knife.” Pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman went into lockdown following the stabbings during morning break time on 24 April Swansea Crown Court heard how the teenager stabbed Ms Elias first as she shouted “I’m going to kill you”, before attacking Ms Hopkin, and then running towards a pupil with a knife and stabbing her too. “Everyone was running, everyone was screaming,” Lacey added. “Another teacher came running, shouting ‘Get back to class now!’. “In that moment, I felt like I was going to faint. I was so traumatised. “I ran to the nearest classroom I could find and I was on my own. I felt like someone was behind me, chasing after me. It was so scary.” Watch the moment 14-year-old girl stabs teachers Lacey’s father, Christopher, said parents struggled to contact their children. “The news started breaking that there were police at the school… ambulances… that a pupil had stabbed another pupil and teachers,” he said. “Obviously, nobody could get in contact with the school. “My heart just sunk in fear that something had happened to my daughter because we just didn’t know.” Another pupil, Osian, 16, who has since left the school to go to college, said he would never forget the day of the attacks. He saw a part of the incident and was kept in lockdown for four hours as the school’s emergency plans kicked in while police investigated. “It was scary, knowing that we couldn’t even go to the toilet without a teacher being there to make sure we were safe,” he said. “There were a lot of rumours going around. Unfortunately for me, I was one of the people who was there and saw some of what happened. “I’m going to remember that day for the rest of my life. It was terrifying. It was chaos.” Crowds of concerned parents lined up outside the school to hear news of their children following the incident A Freedom of Information request by BBC Wales has suggested children as young as Year 2 – aged six and seven – have been found with a blade on school premises during the past five full academic years in Wales. In Carmarthenshire, it has been recorded that three teenage pupils had a blade in school in the two months following the incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, and two of those incidents involved a multi-tool knife. Gwynedd’s council recorded six incidents of blades brought to school in 2023-24, with five relating to self-harm. Meanwhile, a pupil was arrested and charged after an incident involving a blade at a secondary school in Powys in 2024. Vale of Glamorgan council said a teacher was threatened by a Year 9 pupil with a sharp object in 2022. The majority of local authorities in Wales said they did not hold information relating to our Freedom of Information request. ‘Following footsteps of cities in the US’ Teachers’ union UCAC said there was fear among teachers across Wales about bad behaviour and violence. “To take extra steps, to screen, to provide extra security in schools, there might come a time that we need to look at that, but we need to consider then who’s responsible for it,” said secretary general Ioan Rhys Jones. “Unless investment is put into the education system, we might well be following in the footsteps of some of the cities in the United States.” Plaid Cymru Senedd member – and ex-pupil of Ysgol Dyffryn Aman – Adam Price, also called for action on school safety from the Welsh government. “I’ve been frustrated so far with the government’s response,” he said. “Of course, it can happen anywhere, and anytime. That’s why I think we need to have a full scale national review of school safety.” The Welsh government said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this case. Any form of violence or abuse against staff in our schools is completely unacceptable. “Schools can take immediate and permanent action to expel any pupil in possession of a weapon, and schools have an existing power to search for weapons.” It added the cabinet secretary for education took the issue of school safety “incredibly seriously” and a National Behaviour Summit was planned for the spring. 9. Darkan to host women’s solo world record shearing attempt Darkan to host women’s solo world record shearing attempt WA-based New Zealand shearer Alexia Phillips will attempt a solo eight-hour women’s Merino **** shearing world record this month in Darkan. The Waikato native will aim to beat the 358 ewes shorn by New South Wales’ Jeanine Kimm last May. The attempt has been confirmed by the World Sheep Shearing Records Society, and will take place at Spring Valley Farm in the Great Southern town of Darkan on February 22 More than 40 men’s and women’s records are currently recognised by the society, covering the standard workdays of eight and nine hours, according to Shearing Sports New Zealand media officer Doug Laing. These records have involved different breeds of strong wool and crossbred wool, and ewes, wethers and lambs, with machines or blades, and shorn in New Zealand, Australia, the ***, and South Africa. The shift of focus back to Australia follows three strong wool lambs record attempts in New Zealand in the last month, all unsuccessful. Two-stand and three-stand record attempts took place before Christmas. On December 21, Nicki Guttler set a new women’s world record, shearing 450 Merino lambs in eight hours at the Parkdale Merino stud property at Dubbo, NSW, eclipsing the previous record set one month earlier by 55 lambs. On January 20 Jamie Skiffington at Waewaepa Station, Dannevirke, New Zealand failed in his attempt to break the nine-hour strong wool lamb record of 872 held by *** shearer Stuart Connor since 2021. Phillips’ attempt will follow 14 months of the women’s shearing record books being written and rewritten, with new marks set for the solo eight and nine-hour lambs and ewes categories in New Zealand. 10. New storm, strong wind on way to Redding after atmospheric river brings heavy rain, floods New storm, strong wind on way to Redding after atmospheric river brings heavy rain, floods More rain is on the way after a windy, atmospheric river dumped more than half a foot of rain on Redding over the weekend, bringing some flooding to parts of Shasta County. Redding got a short break in the series of three winter storms early Monday morning, but another weaker cooler storm moved in before most people left for work. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for Redding and the rest of the northern Sacramento Valley until 4 a.m. Wednesday; and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office asked people to avoid travel when possible during the storms because of flooding on Shasta County roads. A colder storm later in the week will drop snow as low as the northern foothills by Friday, the weather service said. All this is happening after the first and worst of the series of three storms hit Friday to Sunday, according to forecasters. Wind guests from the south, blowing up to 49 mph, pushed rain sideways and shoved pooling water over roads and into some homes. Here’s how much rain Redding got, and what’s coming this week. Anderson Creek floods property along ****** Ferry Road south of Anderson on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025. An atmospheric river moving over the Redding area through the weekend dumped about 8 inches of rain. How much rain fell on Redding over the weekend Eight inches of rain fell on parts of Redding between Friday and Sunday, said Sara Purdue, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office. Even the driest parts of the city still got deluged with 4 inches, she said. At the same time, strong gusty winds pushed pooling water into doorways and along sidewalks and roads. Heaviest rain fell after midnight into early Sunday morning. Parts of the city, including Redding Regional Airport, got 4.33 inches just on Sunday, Purdue said, after already getting 2 inches on Saturday. Note to readers: If you appreciate the work we do here at the Redding Record Searchlight please consider subscribing yourself or giving the gift of a subscription to someone you know. Please refresh your browser for the latest radar loop. How much rain will Redding get this week? The second of three waves of an atmospheric river system started moving over Redding on Monday morning, according to the weather service. Warm moisture from the subtropics is bumping against cold Pacific Northwest air, causing these storms, Purdue said. While last weekend’s storm was warm, the one at the beginning of the week is cooler. Redding will see more 45 mph wind gusts and another 2-3 inches of rain on Monday and Tuesday, according to Purdue. A still colder and weaker third storm arrives Wednesday, dropping another 1.5 inches of rain on Redding, Purdue said. Please refresh your browser for the latest radar loop. Motorists, prepare for mountain snow The third cold storm will dump snow on the mountains and high foothills. Mountain snow levels could fall to 4,000 feet by Tuesday, as low as 1,500 feet by Wednesday, Purdue said. Motorists driving on mountain roads, including Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County, should prepare for winter driving conditions and strong winds this week, the weather service reported. Road conditions: Flooding prompts travel warnings this week The sheriff’s office issued a warning on social media to avoid travel when possible, especially in low-lying places near creeks and other waterways, until the storms are over. This week, motorists should continue to drive carefully over slick highways, and shouldn’t try to go around flood barriers. “Just a few inches of water can be enough to sweep a vehicle off the roadway. It is also extremely difficult to tell how deep the water is or if the roadway under the water has been impacted,” the sheriff’s office cautioned. On Sunday, the storm flooded roads throughout Shasta County, from north of Redding to Cottonwood. Deputies and police reported flooding in Bella Vista, Palo Cedro, on Old 44 Drive, Boyle Road at Maddelei, and in Anderson at Fairgrounds Drive and 3rd Street and South Street and Emily Drive. Social media users reported flooding throughout Redding, including near Shasta View Drive. Jessica Skropanic is a features reporter for the Record Searchlight/USA Today Network. 11. Student loan debt swelled under Biden, despite historic forgiveness Student loan debt swelled under Biden, despite historic forgiveness US President Joe Biden gestures after speaking about student loan debt relief at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin, April 8, 2024. Andrew Caballero-Reynolds | AFP | Getty Images Former President Joe Biden forgave more student debt than any other president. However, the country’s education debt tab still grew during his presidency. Outstanding federal student debt stood at roughly $1.64 trillion toward the end of 2024, according to U.S. Department of Education data analyzed by higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. That compares with around $1.59 trillion at the start of 2021. “Total student loan debt went up while President Biden was in office, despite all of the student loan forgiveness,” Kantrowitz said. While Biden was in the White House, he canceled student debt for 5.3 million borrowers, for a total of $188.8 billion in relief. While these numbers don’t account for inflation, they still show how difficult it is to make a meaningful debt in the country’s student loan balance, experts said. There were roughly the same number of people with student debt — 42 million — both when Biden entered and exited office, according to Kantrowitz’s calculations. Root cause of the crisis is ‘the cost of higher education’ Betsy Mayotte, president of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors, a nonprofit that helps borrowers navigate the repayment of their debt, said it didn’t surprise her that the country’s loan balance still climbed. “We’re going to continue to see that until we solve the root cause of the student loan crisis,” Mayotte said. “And the root cause is the cost of higher education.” Before financial aid, the sticker price at some four-year colleges and universities — after factoring in tuition, fees, room and board, books, and other expenses — is now nearing $100,000 per year. For undergraduate students in the 2024-25 academic year, the estimated expenses for tuition, fees, housing and food at a public four-year in-state college is $24,920, and $58,600 at a private, nonprofit four-year college, according to the College Board. “New borrowing outpaces repayment,” Kantrowitz said. Indeed, more than $300 billion in new federal loans were taken out while Biden was president, Kantrowitz calculated. Another reason student debt didn’t drop under Biden was the Covid-era pause on federal student loan payments, which spanned from March 2020 to September 2023, Mayotte said. “We went 3½ years where the vast majority of borrowers weren’t paying,” she said. Real’s grievances centre on Espanyol’s Carlos Romero, who went on the score the game’s only goal, after only being booked for what the club felt was a “brutal” challenge on Kylian Mbappe. They were also unhappy that Vinicius Junior had a goal ruled out. The letter, which is addressed to RFEF president Rafael Louzan, read: “The events that occurred in this match have exceeded any margin of human error or referee interpretation. “What happened at the RCDE Stadium represents the culmination of a completely discredited refereeing system, in which the decisions against Real Madrid have reached a level of manipulation and adulteration of the competition that can no longer be ignored.” In a lengthy letter, Real claim Romero’s tackle on Mbappe was “deserving of immediate expulsion” and the decision not to send him off, which was confirmed by VAR, was “manifestly erroneous”. Real head coach Carlo Ancelotti described it as “inexplicable”. They also say the incident in which the Vinicius ‘goal’ was chalked off for a foul by Mbappe earlier in the move, should in fact have resulted in a penalty to them. The letter continues: “The scandal generated by this match has once again had worldwide repercussions, with the international press denouncing the biased use of the VAR in Spain and the lack of credibility of Spanish refereeing.” Madrid currently top La Liga by a point from city rivals Atletico, with Barcelona four points behind. After a wintry system brought 1-3 inches of fresh snowfall to the Bay State late Sunday into early Monday, Meteorologist Shiri Spear issued a Weather Alert for Thursday due to an expected storm. “A wintry mix of snow and ice is currently expected to develop in the morning and continue through midday,” Spear wrote in her latest weather blog. In her latest forecast, Spear said, “Snow and ice arrive at some point during the morning commute with a wintry mix and some slick travel through midday.” The snow and ice will flip to rain during the afternoon, but the changeover might not happen everywhere, according to Spear. “It only takes a coating of ice to really mess things up. As long as we get into that milder air, we’ll be in good shape with showers in the afternoon. If this front is a little bit off and we never get that warm air moving into areas north and west of Boston, it could be slick there for travel all day.” The Boston 25 Weather team has not yet issued a projected snow map for the storm. There will also be a chance for a “fast” weekend storm Saturday night into Sunday morning. “I’m not thinking a lot of precipitation over the weekend, but we might need to add another weather alert,” Spear said. 16. Temu parent PDD’s stock tumbles as Trump tariffs close trade loophole Temu parent PDD’s stock tumbles as Trump tariffs close trade loophole Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty Images Shares of Temu parent PDD Holdings slid more than 5% on Monday, after President Donald Trump’s tariffs announcement signaled the end of a trade loophole used by the ******** e-commerce giant and other online retailers. Trump on Saturday signed executive orders imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, while adding an additional 10% levy on goods from China. Trump on Monday agreed to pause tariffs on Mexico for one month, while the import taxes remain in place for China and Canada. An overlooked provision in the orders eliminates the “de minimis” trade loophole relied on heavily by ******** online retailers like PDD’s Temu and Shein. The de minimis exemption allows packages worth less than $800 to be shipped into the U.S. duty free. It’s been a critical tool for Temu and Shein as they look to grow their presence in the U.S. by offering rock-bottom prices on everything from clothes and furniture to electronics and home decor. Lawmakers have zeroed in on de minimis in recent years, arguing it gives ******** companies an unfair advantage by allowing them to bypass tariffs. Officials have also said de minimis packages are “subject to minimal documentation and inspection,” raising product safety concerns. Trade organizations and advocacy groups have also pushed Trump to curb de minimis shipments because they argue that it has allowed shipments of fentanyl to enter the U.S. Without that tax advantage, it’s unclear if Temu, Shein and other ******** e-commerce platforms will be able to keep prices low and sustain the explosive growth they’ve seen in the U.S. in recent years. Temu and Shein have previously said their business models don’t rely on de minimis. Shein and Temu have opened distribution centers in the U.S., allowing sellers in China to ship goods to the U.S. and store them in local warehouses. It’s more in line with Amazon’s logistics network, which spans hundreds of warehouses across the U.S. That may not be enough to soften the blow of the removal of de minimis. In a note to clients on Sunday, analysts at Citi estimated Temu’s local warehouse program remains a small portion of its overall business. “Although Temu’s efforts in ramping up its local warehouse/semi-managed model over the past year could help mitigate some of the tariff risks, we estimate the [gross merchandise volume] from local warehouses might have contributed 20%+ to U.S. GMV by end-2024,” the analysts wrote. They added, “We believe the new tariffs will still have a negative read-through to Temu’s growth in 2025 and beyond.” The end of de minimis could also dampen Temu and Shein’s digital ad spending, as they look to “offset concerns on rising product costs,” Bank of America analysts wrote Monday in a note to clients. Shein and Temu have been significant contributors to Meta’s advertising revenue in recent quarters. The companies have gone on a digital marketing blitz in an attempt to reach more American consumers. “Meta’s 10-K indicates that revenue from China-based advertisers represented 11% of Family of Apps revenue (vs 6% in 2023), and we estimate Temu and Shein exposure could be 2-4% of ad spend for Google and Meta,” the Bank of America analysts wrote. 17. GTA 6 Will Be Worth The Wait, So Just Be Patient, GTA 5 Actor Says GTA 6 Will Be Worth The Wait, So Just Be Patient, GTA 5 Actor Says Grand Theft Auto V actor Ned Luke, who played Michael in the incredibly popular game, has spoken out about his thoughts on Grand Theft Auto VI. He said in an interview with Fall Damage (via Dexerto) that he’s confident the game will be “fantastic,” going on to say no one ever knows what to expect from Rockstar Games, and that’s part of the reason why he’s so eager to see what the studio is cooking up. “You never know what Rockstar is going to do,” he said. “What I tell people is, be patient. It’s going to be worth the wait. From what I’ve seen, it’s going to be amazing. They’re going to blow our [GTA V] numbers away.” By “numbers,” Luke was referring to the $800 million that GTA V earned in its first 24 hours back in 2013. Luke said he expects GTA VI to make $1.3 billion in its first day. Before this, DFC Intelligence said it was expecting GTA VI to sell 40 million copes and earn $3.2 billion in its first year, including $1 billion from preorder revenue alone. Also in the interview, Luke pointed out how his character, Michael, has never been brought back to GTA Online. GTA V’s other two main characters, Trevor (Steven Ogg) and Franklin (Shawn Fonteno), did come to GTA Online. A piece of GTA Online DLC revealed that Michael is still alive after the events of GTA V, and this has led many to believe Rockstar might eventually release new GTA Online DLC that focuses on or at least includes Michael. If Luke knows the answer, he’s not revealing any secrets. “If you look at GTA Online, for example, Michael hasn’t been back on GTA Online. Maybe he’s coming in a final DLC? Maybe he’s not. Maybe [Michael, Franklin, and Trevor will be] in GTA 6, like [its online mode]. Maybe. Maybe not. You know Rockstar is not going to tell you anything. And if we say anything, you know they will not be very happy,” Luke said. Ogg, who played Trevor in GTA V, said previously that he wants his character to show up in GTA VI and then immediately get killed. In other news, there is said to be “hope” by some in the video game industry that GTA VI will cost as much as $100, with other publishers raising prices as well to help the video game industry rebound. While some might want that, not everyone does, and one prominent researcher believes the game will be $70. GTA VI’s first trailer was released in December 2023, and since then, Rockstar has not said a word about the game, while management at parent company Take-Two has only discussed the game at a very high level. That’s expected to happen again this week, when Take-Two reports earnings on February 6. GTA VI is set for release in Fall 2025, but some believe the game will be delayed to 2026. After all, every Rockstar Games release in the past 10 years has been delayed, so it would be a break from tradition if the game is not delayed. 20. Here’s why tariffs may curtail interest rate cuts in 2025 Here’s why tariffs may curtail interest rate cuts in 2025 A truck drives on its way to enter the United States at a border crossing at the Canada-U.S. border in Blackpool, Quebec, Canada, on Feb. 2, 2025. Andrej Ivanov | Afp | Getty Images ‘A lot of uncertainty’ on Trump tariff policy Of course, the situation is fluid, making a precise assessment a near impossibility, economists said. For example, Trump said on Monday he’d pause a 25% tariff on Mexico from taking effect for a month after ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her country’s border to prevent drug trafficking. It appears, for now, that tariffs on Canada and China will take effect Tuesday as planned. “There’s a lot of uncertainty about how policies unfold,” Susan Collins, president the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, told CNBC Monday. How tariffs may impact inflation, interest rates Tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico — if enacted on a long-term basis — are estimated to increase U.S. inflation by 0.5 to 1 percentage points through 2026, according to Joe Seydl, senior markets economist at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Those estimates are for “core” prices (which strip out energy and food costs) as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge. That’s important because the Fed uses interest rate policy to keep inflation and the labor market in check. Elevated inflation would, all else equal, be expected to keep interest rates higher for longer. Tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico “would push up” PCE inflation by roughly 0.7 percentage points, relative to a no-tariff baseline, to around 2.8% in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to a note published Tuesday by Evercore ISI. “That would knock out at least one and plausibly both remaining Fed cuts this year,” the Evercore note said. In December, Fed officials forecast they’d cut interest rates twice in 2025. “Obviously there is some uncertainty about whether these tariffs will go ahead or not, given the one-month pause of the Mexico one announced today,” Stephen Brown, deputy chief North America economist at Capital Economics, wrote in an e-mail. “If the tariffs go ahead, it’s unlikely that the Fed will cut again.” While some have suggested that tariffs may push the central bank to raise interest rates again, Brown thinks that’s unlikely. Tariffs would likely be a drag on the U.S. economy, he said. Likewise, J.P. Morgan projects that proposed tariffs would reduce U.S. gross domestic product — a measure of economic output — by 0.5 to 1 percentage point through 2026, Seydl said. That economic drag could outweigh the inflationary impact of tariffs and eventually lead the Fed to cut rates, he said. Self-healing roads aim to offer solution to crater crisis Self-healing roads aim to offer solution to crater crisis Getty Images Self-healing asphalt roads could soon offer a solution to the ***’s pothole crisis, researchers say Self-healing asphalt roads could soon offer a solution to the ***’s pothole crisis, according to new research. Designed with artificial intelligence (AI), a new type of asphalt made from biomass waste can mend its own cracks without the need for maintenance or human intervention. Scientists at Swansea University, King’s College London and from Chile have found methods to “stitch” asphalt back together, hoping to create more durable and sustainable roads. Also known as bitumen, asphalt is a sticky ****** substance derived from crude oil, widely used to construct roads, highways and airport runways. As it hardens through oxidisation it becomes prone to cracks, but researchers have developed methods to “stitch” asphalt back together, creating more durable roads. Lead researcher and expert in self-healing asphalt at Swansea University, Dr Joe Norambuena-Contreras, said the approach would help the develop net-zero roads as road carbon emissions can largely be linked to asphalt production. He has called upon both the *** Government and private sector to invest in the initiative to meet net-zero targets. Swansea University Dr Jose Norambuena-Contreras says the substance would also help develop net zero roads Dr Francisco Martin-Martinez of King’s College London, said the research aims to mimic the healing properties observed in nature. “Creating asphalt that can heal itself will increase the durability of roads and reduce the need for people to fill in potholes,” he said. He added the study will also use sustainable materials in the new asphalt, including biomass waste, reducing the dependence on natural resources. While still in development, the research team said there is potential to improve infrastructure and advance sustainability globally. Swansea University Asphalt is widely used to construct roads, highways and airport runways Local road conditions in England and Wales were at an all-time low in 2024 due to “decades of underfunding”, according to an annual survey by the Asphalt Industry Alliance. It estimated it would cost more than £16bn to tackle the backlog of repairs. Some communities in Wrexham county recently resorted to making their crater-filled village a tourist attraction, branding it “Pothole land”. Fed up residents say the conditions have become so bad, visitors and delivery drivers refuse to drive to their homes. 22. Ontario cancels $100 million Starlink contract as a response to those tariffs Ontario cancels $100 million Starlink contract as a response to those tariffs Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario and a former staunch supporter of President Trump, has announced that the ********* territory will be “ripping up” a $100 million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink. The contract was signed in November of last year and tasked Starlink with providing internet service to remote parts of the province. This comes after Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on nearly all ********* imported goods. This spurred Canada to announce its own 25 percent tariff on American imported goods. It looks like we are heading into a trade war for, uh, reasons? Trump says it’s about fentanyl, even though less than one percent of the drug arrives in this country via ********* routes. This is data that has been confirmed by both ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Starting today and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario is banning American companies from provincial contracts. Every year, the Ontario government and its agencies spend $30 billion on procurement, alongside our $200 billion plan to build Ontario. U.S.-based businesses will… — Doug Ford (@fordnation) February 3, 2025 So where do Musk and Starlink come in? The richest man in the world is a close confidant of Trump and now has control over the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, a group within the administration tasked with cost-cutting and deregulation. Musk, who was not elected and is essentially just some guy, has access to the federal payment system and some of the levers of the US Treasury. In the eyes of Ford, this is enough to link Musk to Trump’s tariffs. He said that Ontario “won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy” and that Musk wants to “take food off the table” of hard-working Canadians. The premier indicated that the contract will remain null and void until “US tariffs are removed.” Additionally, Ontario is banning all American companies from provincial contracts, which will cause domestic businesses to “lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues.” Ford also commanded the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to remove American-made spirits from store shelves. He joins several other premiers across the country in this effort. “Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers. Not anymore,” he said in a statement. Ontario has a population of over 16 million people and includes cities like Toronto and Niagara Falls. Musk responded to Ford’s decision by posting “oh well” on X. Mabinogi Mobile is the mobile adaptation of Nexon’****** MMORPG, with a tentative release date soon Mabinogi Mobile is the mobile adaptation of Nexon’****** MMORPG, with a tentative release date soon Mabinogi Mobile was announced way back in 2022, but we now have more news What is it? Well, it’s Nexon’****** MMORPG that offers more than just combat And pretty soon we could be getting that mobile version this March! One of the most intriguing upcoming releases that has flown under the radar recently has been a mobile adaptation of Nexon’****** MMORPG Mabinogi. And ever since it was announced way back in 2022 there’s been radio silence, but that’s all changed with the release of a new teaser and a tentative date for a release date this March. Mabinogi Online is, as you might’ve guessed, an MMORPG. However, it comes with a twist as this is far more in the vein of older releases like Ultima Online, where being a classic fantasy adventurer is not the only avenue of employment available. Mabinogi’s talent system, rather than class, offers a huge variety of skills from close combat to cookery! Announced back in 2022, a mobile adaptation of Mabinogi is certainly to be expected given Nexon’s heavy focus on our humble platform. But radio silence has also been the rule since then. But the aforementioned teaser (which you can see below) seems to indicate that we won’t have to wait too long, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a global launch is still a ways off. More Mabinogi for Mobile I like the idea of Mabinogi, although I admit that the idea of an MMORPG offering you non-combat activities is not exactly a new one. However, having a new contender in the field can hardly be a bad thing. It’s also been a pretty popular one for collabs, which I know you all love, so if you want to find out more be sure to stay tuned but feel free to take a gander at Mabinogi’s official website for more info! 25. I pitted ChatGPT’s new o3-mini reasoning model against DeepSeek-R1, and I was shocked by the results I pitted ChatGPT’s new o3-mini reasoning model against DeepSeek-R1, and I was shocked by the results It’s been a rollercoaster week for artificial intelligence, with DeepSeek completely destabilizing the AI market by releasing its R1 reasoning model and not only giving everybody access to it for free (as a chatbot), but also giving developers incredibly cost-effective access to it as an API. DeepSeek was then hit by cyber attacks that temporarily took it offline, but it appears to be up and running again. To cap the week off, OpenAI responded by releasing its o3-mini and o3-mini-high reasoning models across all its subscription services, including its Plus and Pro subscriptions and its free tier. To use o3-mini on the free tier of ChatGPT, on mobile or the web, is simple. You’ll need to update your ChatGPT app on mobile first, then tap the new Reason button next to search in the Message box. It works exactly the same way in the web browser version of ChatGPT. You’ll find a new Reason button where you type your text prompt: ChatGPT has a new Reason button you can select when messaging the chatbot. (Image credit: OpenAI) Reasoning models are particularly good at tasks like writing complex code and solving difficult math problems, however, most of us use chatbots to get quick answers to the kind of questions that appear in everyday life. So, I immediately started wondering how the new o3-mini reasoning model would do compared to DeepSeek-R1 since they’re both free to access. I immediately set about asking it some tough questions that would require a little bit of thought to answer. Life advice The first thing I asked o3-mini was to give me a bit of life advice and (pretending I was 18 years old again) help me choose between starting my career or going to university. That’s the sort of question that has a lot of factors that need consideration, so I thought it would be a good place to start. While both LLMs gave me a decent answer, the difference between how they presented it was quite shocking. ChatGPT o3-mini thought about if for a few seconds, giving me a brief insight into its thinking, telling me, “I’m weighing the decision between starting a career now or pursuing further education. Need to gather more details, like goals and specific circumstances, before giving any advice.” and “I’m evaluating fields’ requirements, considering interests, preferences, finances, career goals, and job market. Mentorship and research are pivotal. Personal context is crucial for an informed decision” before giving me an actual answer that was pretty balanced. DeepSeek, however, completely lifted the lid on its reasoning process, telling me what it was considering at every point. In fact, there was almost too much information! It feels like you’re looking into the anxious mind of an over-thinker. “Wait,” DeepSeek wonders, “but how do I know what I want? Maybe I should list out the pros and cons”. And later, it ponders, “What about passion? Am I excited about a particular field of study, or am I more eager to get into the workforce? If I’m not sure what to study, maybe working for a while could help me figure that out before committing to a degree.” And so it goes on. And that is just a small sample of the behind-the-scenes reasoning DeepSeek-R1 provides. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Both models gave me a breakdown of the final answer, with bullet points and categories, before hitting a summary. This is how deep reasoning models tend to provide their answers, in contrast to things like ChatGPT 4o, which will just give you a more concise answer. Obviously, I didn’t stop there, but the results are the same for most queries I threw at the models. ChatGPT o3-mini is more concise in showing reasoning, and DeepSeek-R1 is more sprawling and verbose. If you really need to see the way the LLM arrived at the answer, then DeepSeek-R1’s approach feels like you’re getting the full reasoning service, while ChatGPT 03-mini feels like an overview in comparison. I’ve read reports on how o3-mini can crush DeepSeek-R1 in terms of physics simulations and complex geometric challenges, but for the simple stuff, I think I prefer DeepSeek-R1.
