Trump coin leads tumble in meme cryptocurrencies as tariffs rock global markets Trump coin leads tumble in meme cryptocurrencies as tariffs rock global markets TrumpCoin cryptocurrency price on Binance website is displayed for illustration photo. Krakow, Poland on Januar 20th, 2025 (Photo by Beata Zawrzel/NurPhoto via Getty Images) Beata Zawrzel | Nurphoto | Getty Images Meme coins plummeted over the weekend as President Donald Trump signed long threatened tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, kicking off a trade war that caused investors to dump risk assets worldwide. Trump’s own meme coin, dubbed Official Trump, launched a little over two weeks ago, was last down 15% to $17, according to CoinGecko. It rallied to a high of about $73 dollars the weekend of its launch before crashing 50% on inauguration day. The biggest and most popular meme coins, dogecoin and Shiba Inu, lost about 14% each. Pudgy Penguins was down 13%, while dogwifhat tumbled 26%. Meme coins as a group have dropped 17% in the past 24 hours, according to CoinGecko. The drop began Saturday evening after Trump signed an order imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10% duty on China. The U.S. does about $1.6 trillion in business with the three countries. “Every coin that recently rallied through January, including memes like [dogecoin], have essentially handed back most of their gains,” said James Davies, CEO and co-founder at trading platform Crypto Valley Exchange. “Crypto is fundamentally about freedom to make and conduct trades, which runs counter to the global political narrative of the last week,” he added. “As a community, we are pro free-trade … when that is being restricted many investors are risk-off in terms of their holdings. This massively impacts the alt coin market.” Bitcoin losses Monday were relatively modest compared to meme coins and other smaller cryptocurrencies further out on the risk curve. It was last lower by just 3%, though it could see more pain in the short term as the trade war triggered by Trump’s tariffs plays out. 2. Europe braces for Trump tariffs after Canada, Mexico and China hit – National Europe braces for Trump tariffs after Canada, Mexico and China hit – National European leaders were bracing for U.S. tariffs on Monday after United States President Donald Trump imposed sweeping levies on Mexico, Canada and China that will affect billions of dollars worth of trade, roiling global markets and currencies. Trump said the tariffs against the three largest U.S. trading partners, which take effect on Tuesday, might cause Americans some short-term pain, but “long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world.” Global stock markets and currencies tumbled on Monday on concerns that the tariffs would trigger an economically damaging trade war. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 1.3 per cent in morning trading, set for its biggest one-day slide this year and futures for Wall Street’s S&P 500 fell 1.4 per cent. Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Sunday, Trump indicated that the 27-nation European Union would be next in the firing line, but did not say when. Story continues below advertisement “They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products. They take almost nothing and we take everything from them,” he told reporters. EU leaders meeting at an informal summit in Brussels on Monday said Europe would be prepared to fight back if the U.S. imposes tariffs, but also called for reason and negotiation. Arriving at the talks, French President Emmanuel Macron said if the EU were attacked in its commercial interests it would have to “make itself respected and thus react.” He added that recent declarations from the United States were pushing Europe to be stronger and more united. 2:02 How Canadians are planning to push back against Trump-imposed tariffs Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, the EU’s largest economy which is highly dependent on exports, also said the bloc could respond if necessary with its own tariffs against the U.S. but stressed it was better for the two to find agreement on trade. Story continues below advertisement Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden said: “I think tariffs are always bad. Tariffs are bad for trade. Tariffs are bad for the United States.” Trump hinted that Britain, which left the EU in 2020, might be spared tariffs, saying: “I think that one can be worked out.” The U.S. is the EU’s largest trade and investment partner and has consistently imported more goods than it has exported to the bloc. The U.S. goods trade deficit stood at 155.8 billion euros ($161.6 billion) in 2023, according to Eurostat data. However, in services, the U.S. had a surplus of exports over imports with the EU of 104 billion euros. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said there were no winners in a trade war, saying that if one broke out between Europe and the United States, “then the one laughing on the side is China.” The tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, outlined in three executive orders, are due to take effect 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Story continues below advertisement Trump said he would speak on Monday with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, which have both announced retaliatory tariffs of their own, but downplayed expectations that they would change his mind. “They owe us a lot of money, and I’m sure they’re going to pay,” Trump told reporters. Economists said the Republican president’s plan to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico and ten per cent tariffs on China would slow global growth and drive prices higher for Americans. Trump says they are needed to curb immigration and narcotics trafficking and spur domestic industries. 2:04 China and Mexico follow in Canada’s footsteps, vow swift response to Trump tariffs Financial market reaction on Monday reflected concerns about the fallout from a trade war. Shares in Tokyo ended the day down almost three per cent and Australia’s benchmark – often a proxy trade for ******** markets – dropped 1.8 per cent. The mainland China market was shut for Lunar New Year holidays. Trending Now 2025 Grammy Awards: The most eye-catching red carpet fashion Which provinces are pulling U.S. alcohol off shelves over Trump’s tariffs? Story continues below advertisement The ******** yuan, ********* dollar and ******** peso all slumped against a soaring dollar. With Canada and Mexico the top sources of U.S. crude oil imports, U.S. oil prices CLc1 jumped more than 1%, while gasoline futures RBc1 rose nearly three per cent. Trump’s tariffs will cover almost half of all U.S. imports and would require the United States to more than double its own manufacturing output to cover the gap – an unfeasible task in the near term, ING analysts wrote. Other analysts said the tariffs could throw Canada and Mexico into recession and trigger “stagflation” – high inflation, stagnant growth and elevated unemployment – at home. In Europe, economists at Deutsche Bank said they were currently factoring in a 0.5 per cent hit to gross domestic product (GDP) should Trump impose ten per cent tariffs on the bloc. A White House fact sheet gave no details on what Canada, Mexico and China would need to do to win a reprieve. Story continues below advertisement Trump vowed to keep them in place until what he described as a national emergency over fentanyl, a deadly opioid, and ******** immigration to the United States ends. China called fentanyl America’s problem and said it would challenge the tariffs at the World Trade Organization and take other countermeasures, but also left the door open for talks. ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum vowed resilience and said she would provide more details on Monday of the retaliatory tariffs she ordered on the weekend. Canada said it would take legal action under the relevant international bodies to challenge the tariffs. Automakers would be particularly hard hit, with new tariffs on vehicles built in Canada and Mexico, burdening a vast regional supply chain where parts can cross borders several times before final assembly. 2:06 Ontario pulls U.S. alcohol off LCBO shelves in response to Trump tariffs Shares in Volkswagen VOWG_p.DE, BMW BMWG.DE, Porsche P911_p.DE, Stellantis STLAM.MI, and truckmaker Daimler Truck DTGGe.DE all fell by about five to six per cent in European trading on Monday. Story continues below advertisement Analysts at investment bank Stifel estimated that eight billion euros of VW’s revenues would be impacted by tariffs and 16 billion euros of Stellantis. Shares in U.S. big tech stocks were also lower ahead of the U.S. open, with Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Apple all down between 1.5 per cent to two per cent. Trump imposed only a ten per cent duty on energy products. Ford ‘ripping up’ Ontario’s $100M contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink system Ford ‘ripping up’ Ontario’s $100M contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink system Descrease article font size Increase article font size Doug Ford says the Ontario government is “ripping up” its $100-million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide high-speed internet to northern and rural communities. Ford, who plunged the province into an early election last week, said in a social media post Monday that effective immediately, the Progressive-Conservative government is banning American companies from provincial contracts. The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to enact a 25 per cent tariff on all ********* and ******** imports beginning Tuesday; Ottawa and the provinces are retaliating, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau imposing immediate tariffs on $30-billion worth of goods, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products in 21 days. 4. Sweden says ship broke Baltic Sea cable by accident Sweden says ship broke Baltic Sea cable by accident Cargo ship Vezhen did damage a subsea cable linking Sweden and Latvia last month but it was an accident, not sabotage, a Swedish prosecutor says and adds that the Maltese-flagged vessel has been released. The incident took place on January 26 and was one of several in recent months, triggered a hunt for vessels suspected of involvement. The Silver Dania, a Norwegian cargo ship with an all-Russian crew, was seized by authorities in Norway at the request of the request of Latvian officials before being cleared of wrongdoing and released. Swedish police seized and boarded the Vezhen the day after the cable was damaged in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone. “The investigation now clearly shows that it is not a case of sabotage,” the Swedish prosecution authority said in a statement. Investigators had, however, concluded that the Vezhen did cause the damage and their investigation is continuing to examine whether other crimes were committed, the authority said. “It has been established that a combination of weather conditions and deficiencies in equipment and seamanship contributed to the cable break,” it said. The Baltic Sea region is on high alert after a string of power cable, telecom link and gas pipeline outages since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In response, the NATO military alliance last month said it would deploy frigates, aircraft and naval drones to help protect critical infrastructure in the region and that it reserved the right to take action against ships suspected of posing a threat. 5. Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 review Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 review Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 MSRP $699.00 “The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is a speedy, long-lasting budget option.” Pros Attractive price Fast performance Excellent battery life Solid build quality Good IPS display Cons A little thick and heavy Too few configuration options Table of Contents Table of Contents Specs and configurations Design Keyboard and touchpad Connectivity and webcam Performance Battery life Display A solid Chromebook for a decent price With all the talk of new chipsets from Apple, Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD, and their impact on the current state of laptop technology, it might be easy to forget that Windows and macOS aren’t the only games in town. The best Chromebooks running Google’s Chrome OS remain quite viable, and that platform has seen its own transition to AI features with Chromebook Plus. Acer’s Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is the latest iteration of a lineup that specifically added “Plus” to the name to identify it as capable of running Chromebook Plus. If you like Chrome OS for its simplicity, security, and performance on low-end hardware, then you’ll like the Chromebook Plus Spin 714. Specs and configurations Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 Dimensions 12.36 inches x 8.86 inches x 0.78 inches Weight 3.21 pounds Processor Intel Core Ultra 5 115U Graphics Intel Graphics RAM 8GB Display 14.0-inch 16:10 FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS, 60Hz Storage 256GB SSD Touch Yes Ports 2 x USB-C with Thunderbolt 4 1 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 1 x HDMI 2.0 1 x 3.5mm audio jack Wireless Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 Webcam QHD (2560 x 1440) Chrome OS Battery 53 watt-hour Price $699 While Acer might release other configurations of the Chromebook Plus Spin 714, there’s only one available right now. It has an Intel Core 5 Ultra 115U, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 14-inch FHD+ IPS display for $699. That’s an attractive price for a laptop that will provide very good performance given the lightweight nature of Chrome OS. It is not, though, a purely budget laptop. For that money, you’ll need to be okay with any limitations of the platform and be willing to look past some other, equally affordable Windows laptops like the Asus Zenbook 14 that’s around the same price and sports a fantastic OLED display. Design Mark Coppock / Digital Trends The Chromebook Plus Spin 714 looks a lot like a lot of 14-inch convertible 2-in-1s today. That is, it has a gray chassis with minimalist lines and some chrome edging that looks good and doesn’t come across as ostentations, making it a rather conservative but still attractive design. You’ll know it’s a Chromebook Plus thanks to the subdued logo on the lid, but otherwise, this could be a Windows machine as far as appearances go. It’s also reasonably well-built, with an all-aluminum chassis that’s just the tiniest bit flexible in the keyboard deck and lid. Regarding the latter, it’s no worse than the Apple MacBook Air which also had a lid that will bend a little under pressure. The hinge is smooth enough to allow opening the lid with one hand, but that makes it a bit wobbly in clamshell, tent, and media modes. Tablet mode is fine, though. Mark Coppock / Digital Trends The top bezel and bottom chin are a bit thick, making the depth a bit more than a clamshell with smaller bezels all around. And, it’s a bit thick at 0.78 inches whereas many 14-inch laptops are a lot thinner. As a reference, the MacBook Air 13 is insanely thin at 0.44 inches, but other 14-inch 2-in-1s like the HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 (0.59 inches) are also thinner. The 3.21-pound weight is fine, although that’s a bit heavy to hold as a tablet. Keyboard and touchpad Mark Coppock / Digital Trends The keyboard is quite good, with large keycaps and plenty of key spacing. The switches are light and snappy, which I like a lot. I’d rank it close to the best keyboards, like HP’s OmniBooks and Apple’s Magic Keyboard. The touchpad is more mundane, as a smallish mechanical version. It works fine, although its button clicks are a bit sharp and loud. The display is touch- and pen-enabled, although the pen is optional and wasn’t shipped with my review unit. Chrome OS has okay pen support, and the touch display is good for Android games. Connectivity and webcam Connectivity is very strong, including both fast Thunderbolt 4 ports, which are unusual on Chromebooks, and legacy ports. Wireless connectivity is also reasonably up-to-date. The webcam is a high-res 1440p version, and it supports various Chromebook Plus features based on Google’s Gemini AI features. I mention those here because a lot of them depend on the webcam. But, there are actually a host of Chromebook Plus features that the Chromebook Plus Spin 714 has. In a way, Chromebook Plus is Google’s response to Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC AI initiative. The difference is that Chromebook Plus laptops don’t seem to require a fast Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which the Chromebook Plus Spin 14 doesn’t possess. I found the various features to work well, and that includes the webcam. So far, AI seems more like a novelty to me, so I won’t spend too much time on Chromebook Plus. Performance Mark Coppock / Digital Trends My Chromebook Plus Spin 14 review unit uses an Intel Core Ultra 5 115U, a Meteor Lake chipset with eight cores (two Performance and six Efficient) and 10 threads, running at 15 watts. It’s not a fast chipset, and as mentioned doesn’t have an NPU like Intel’s Lunar Lake, Apple Silicon, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chipset. If it was running Windows 11, it wouldn’t be a very fast chipset at all. However, Chrome OS is a lot more lightweight. Although its capabilities have expanded, including the ability to run Android apps, it remains at its core a web-based operating system. Given the Chromebook Plus Flip 14’s 8GB of RAM, which is a lot for Chrome OS, its real-life performance is very good. It only scored 1,599 in the Geekbench 6 single-core test and 5,482 in the multi-core test, and those aren’t very good. But the chipset is more than fast enough for good performance in Chrome OS. We can’t run our complete set of benchmarks on Chrome OS, but I’m comfortable that most users will like the Chromebook Plus Flip 14’s performance. The Intel integrated graphics aren’t the best, but you can still run most Android games fairly well. And that’s about the limit of gaming on the laptop unless you go with something like Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service. In that case, you’ll get very good gaming performance up to the limits of the subscription you buy and the speed of your internet connection. Battery life Mark Coppock / Digital Trends The Chromebook Plus Flip 14 has a 53 watt-hour battery and an FHD+ IPS display. The combination should provide decent battery life. In my testing, the laptop achieved around eight hours in our web browsing test and 14.5 hours in our video looping test. Those are good results that promise most of a day’s work running typical tasks. It’s not as good as some of the best Windows and macOS laptops today, but it’s good enough. Display Mark Coppock / Digital Trends The 14.0-inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS display is just sharp enough at the size that text isn’t too pixellated. If you want the sharpest text, you’ll likely wish it was higher resolution. Brightness was very good and colors seem dynamic and reasonably accurate. It doesn’t have the colors and inky ******* of OLED panels, but it will please productivity users and media streamers. I can’t use my colorimeter to test Chromebook displays, but I have no subjective issues with this one. The audio, provided by a pair of upward-firing speakers, was also good but not great. A solid Chromebook for a decent price Some users don’t need the complexity and wide compatibility of Windows 11 and macOS, but a simple tablet like an iPad or an Android tablet won’t suffice. That’s where Chromebooks come in, and the Chromebook Plus Spin 714 is a solid addition. It’s fast enough and has good enough battery life, with a display that’s not spectacular but is good enough for most uses. At its $699 price is low enough that it’s a good budget option. It’s an easy convertible 2-in-1 to recommend. Source link #Acer #Chromebook #Spin #review Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. Ben Chilwell: Crystal Palace set to sign Chelsea left-back on loan Ben Chilwell: Crystal Palace set to sign Chelsea left-back on loan Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell is set to join Premier League rivals Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the season. Left-back Chilwell, 28, has not made a Premier League appearance since April 2024 and was told last August he was not part of Enzo Maresca’s plans. The England international has only appeared once this season, in the second half of the Blues’ Carabao Cup win against Barrow in September. Chelsea boss Maresca has previously said Chilwell, who has a contract until the summer of 2027, is free to leave on a permanent deal. Palace are keen to sign Chilwell to boost their defensive options after Morocco international Chadi Riad was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Chelsea signed Chilwell from Leicester City on a five-year deal for £45m in 2020, before extending his contract in April 2023. The most recent of his 21 England caps came in a friendly in March 2024 against Belgium. Chilwell was left out of Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad for Euro 2024. Palace are 12th in the Premier League with 30 points from 24 games. If the move goes through, Chilwell could make his Palace debut against Doncaster Rovers in the fourth round of the FA Cup on 10 February (19:45 GMT). 7. After massive fan backlash, Pokemon TCG Pocket is changing how trading works After massive fan backlash, Pokemon TCG Pocket is changing how trading works Pokémon TCG Pocket finally added the trading feature after several months, but it was not well received by fans for its restrictive policies and new types of currency. Since adding the feature in a few days ago, TCG Pocket developer Creatures, Inc has changed its approach and said updates and improvements are on the way, although there is not a specific release window for when the game will implement those changes. “Since releasing the first iteration of the trading feature a few days ago, we have received a large number of comments. Thank you all for sharing your feedback. The item requirements and restrictions implemented for the trading feature were designed to prevent abuse from bots and other prohibited actions using multiple accounts. Our goal was to balance the game while preserving the fun of collecting cards that are core to the Pokemon TCG pocket experience,” the company said in a press release. The Pokemon Company “However, thanks to your feedback, we understand some of the restrictions put in place are preventing players from being able to casually enjoy the feature as intended. We are actively investigating ways to improve the feature to address these concerns. Going forward, we also plan to offer multiple ways to obtain trade tokens including through event distributions.” The current system limits trades to the same level of rarity, and only cards with a rarity falling between 1 and 4 diamonds, or 1 star, can be traded. Players will also need to have the right type of currency to initiate the trade with trade tokens and trade hourglasses. Creatures, Inc says players who log in now will receive enough trade tokens for a free trade. It’s not clear how the trading mechanic will improve in future updates; it clearly won’t come with no restrictions, as it would be far too easy to complete card collections through trading alone. 8. RTX 5090 cable melting claim debunked — Investigation points at prior RTX 4090 FE cabling usage RTX 5090 cable melting claim debunked — Investigation points at prior RTX 4090 FE cabling usage Tech publication outlet PCM from Hong Kong recently reported an incident while testing the RTX 5090D and RTX 5080 (via UNIKO’s Hardware), sharing some all-too-familiar images. Two of the publication’s 16-pin cables melted and their 1,200W PSU outright failed. While this news could lead to a new generation power connector scare, closer investigation reveals that an RTX 4090 FE was in fact the real culprit with visible burn marks evident ahead of the Blackwell testing. The damage wasn’t initially obvious and further instability prompted the reviewer to check the GPU power cable, only to find that both ends had melted. From our understanding of the source’s machine translation, the reviewer likely tested the RTX 4090 FE beforehand. Nvidia silently revised the power connector on the 4090 FE to the updated 12V-2×6 standard after a few months. It is possible that their sample still used the fault-prone 12VHPWR connector. After testing both RTX 50 GPUs under full load, the reviewer noticed signs of instability, which led them to suspect the SSD had failed. Upon inspecting the 16-pin GPU power cable, they found clear signs of melting. This led to the initial inference that Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPUs could still be vulnerable to power cabling meltdowns. Further examination revealed clear burn marks on the RTX 4090 FE, while the 50-series GPUs’ connectors showed no signs of damage. This suggests that the RTX 4090 FE almost certainly caused the cable to melt. Breathe easy; this was just a false alarm. A translation of the story is available if you expand the tweet below. hong kong media pcm reported 12vhpwr cable melted after testing 5090d and 5080. translate No chance to win the 100 million Mark Six lottery, but you will win if you burn 12VHPWR. After the initial testing of the RTX 5090D and 5080 under full… pic.twitter.com/3rXa0Q41BMFebruary 3, 2025 The elevated power limits on Blackwell GPUs did raise concerns, considering the melted power connector pandemic that plagued Ada Lovelace. However, Nvidia reassured customers that RTX 50 series power connectors were unlikely to melt. While the answer is a bit more complicated than a clear yes or no, AIBs are taking extra precautions, nonetheless. Zotac’s new safety light feature prevents GPU power-on until the cable is seated correctly. MSI’s new 16-pin cables feature an easily visible yellow indicator to help determine whether they are properly connected or not. In fact, the 16-pin connector on a handful of custom RTX 50 models is safeguarded by thermal pads, where the excess heat is dissipated through the metal backplate. There have been reports by a few reviewers that suggest Nvidia’s multi-PCB design for its Founders Edition cards is causing instability in PCIe 5.0 mode. We likely won’t know the complete story until a proper investigation ensues; further exacerbated by the ongoing shortages which limit our ability to corroborate this issue with other users. Working full-time in transport logistics while her husband works the night shift, the 36-year-old from Epping in Melbourne’s north said the partnership would be a “phenomenal” timesaver for her. “I don’t find the time to shop, it’s just wherever I can fit it in between pick-ups, drop-offs –my husband can try to duck out where he can when he’s awake, (but) it can be quite difficult, which is why this has excited me,” Ms Caruso said. “When I go to the shops, I’m just quick – in and out – but with this I can have a look, know what I want to get, and can purchase in bulk which is just amazing, especially with school lunches and stuff.” Camera IconThe move has been branded a ‘game changer’. DoorDash vice president Simon Rossi said the move would allow Aussies to stock up on their favourite Costco items in weekly shops, or pick up forgotten dinner ingredients or late-night chocolate snacks. He said it was “very exciting” that non-Costco members would be able to order from the major chain through DoorDash. However, members will be able to benefit from exclusive member prices, promotions and offers. “We feel that this partnership is really timely – the *********** families, small businesses and consumers alike are becoming more and more time poor, and the cost of living is becoming a greater challenge,” Mr Rossi said. “This partnership provides both convenience in being able to sit at home and order, and great Costco products at affordable prices.” Customers spending $150 or more are set to receive $20 off their first Costco order Source link #Gamechanger #Costco #open #nonmembers #partnership #DoorDash Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. Brace for pricier gadgets as steep tariffs hit top US trade partners Brace for pricier gadgets as steep tariffs hit top US trade partners Table of Contents Table of Contents Exemptions, no more The low-cost benefit is gone A price hike is headed for shoppers in the US, and it could send shockwaves across industries, ranging from cheap gadgets and affordable fashion to electric vehicles. President Donald Trump, invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers (IEEPA) Act and the National Emergencies Act (NEA), has imposed a fresh round of sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Items sourced from Mexico and Canada will now face a 25% tariff, while those coming from China will have to contend with an extra 10% duty. Now, there are multiple ways in which the tariffs could the pockets of American shoppers. This is what the Tax Foundation laid out in its estimates: “The tariffs on Canada and Mexico alone would increase taxes by $958 billion between 2025 and 2034 on a conventional basis, amounting to an average tax increase of more than $670 per US household in 2025.” President Trump is implementing a 10 percent tariff on China until we secure the full cooperation of the ******** government in the fight against fentanyl. China plays the central role in the fentanyl crisis that is destroying American lives. In fact, the ******** ********** Party… pic.twitter.com/pAFfC76nNq — The White House (@WhiteHouse) February 1, 2025 Items sourced from China, which include popular high-volume goods such as iPhones, might get pricier. Until now, a healthy bunch of top-selling items in the electronics category, such as phones and TVs, have enjoyed tariff exemption. “The 10% blanket tariff Trump is proposing could affect the price of everything that is made in China and exported to the US. That applies to a lot of things – from toys and tea cups to laptops,” says a BBC analysis. Exemptions, no more But it’s not just the tariffs that could spell trouble for US shoppers, but also the retaliatory taxes. As per experts, who cited historical precedent, most companies would pass on the cost of increased duties to customers. The probability of that happening seems high. China has threatened countermeasures, while Mexico and Canada have already announced their respective retaliatory tariffs. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends The press statement issued by the White House also mentions that the de minimis exemption no longer applies. As per the International Trade Administration, imported items in the US worth $800 or less in value are not subject to any tariffs, taxes, or fees. The low-cost benefit is gone Earlier, the value was $200, but in 2016, Congress increased the de minimis threshold to $800. The de minimis exemption’s removal is going to hurt shoppers, especially folks buying goods from popular e-commerce platforms such as Shein, Temu, JD.com, and Alibaba. As per data provided by the US Customs and Border Protection, goods worth over $47 billion were shipped into the US after qualifying for the de minimis benefit. This has allowed platforms like Shein and Temu to explode in popularity, at the cost of local players such as Amazon. The era of ******** imports is entering a pricey phase. Simon Cohen / Digital Trends For lower-income customers, these de minimis purchases held a lot of value, as the products were cheaper, even though they came with a longer wait time. The price of food and alcoholic beverages is also expected to go up, as will the cost of appliances and most importantly, electric vehicles. According to the government’s own data, the US collectively imported over $150 billion in motor vehicles and vehicle parts from Mexico last year, while Canada contributed $34 billion in motor vehicle imports. But the impact will be felt across all four trading nations. “Intermediate goods—especially in motor vehicles—cross the borders multiple times before final assembly. The imposition of tariffs at each stage of fabrication would be disastrous,” says an analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics. There is still a lot of uncertainty as to how the tariffs are going to unfold and how the cross-border dynamics will ultimately affect the sticker prices, but a trade war is certainly here and its inflationary effect will unfold in the immediate future. Last Friday, EA re-released The Sims and The Sims 2 as new Legacy Collection versions, with all previous DLC included (except an IKEA pack released for The Sims 2). However, over the weekend, players have been reporting numerous issues with the game, ranging from gameplay bugs and graphical errors to the game simply not loading at all. At the time of writing, the official Sims forums are full of separate threads from users experience crashing, file deletions, disappearing food and furnituer, Direct X conflicts, game save issues and both games not booting in the first place. Now EA has released a statement acknowledging the problems, telling players it’s looking into solutions. “Sul Sul Simmers,” the statement reads. “We recognize some fans are currently experiencing various issues with The Sims: Legacy Collection and The Sims 2: Legacy Collection. “We are currently investigating these issues and hope to have more information on fixes soon. To help with our investigations, please ensure you’re including screenshots, videos, dxdiags, and (for TS1) vulkaninfo.exe files in your bug reports.” The original version of The Sims has proved particularly tricky to play in the modern era because it was never released digitally, meaning players will have to find the original game disc from 2000, find a disc drive for their PC and search for user-created patches designed to get it running on today’s hardware. The Sims: Legacy Collection, then, marks the first ever digital release of The Sims, but it appears that it hasn’t come without teething problems. 15. Apple Intelligence Will Support More Languages in April, Confirms CEO Tim Cook Apple Intelligence Will Support More Languages in April, Confirms CEO Tim Cook Apple Intelligence will soon support more languages including support for localised English for India. The announcement was made by CEO Tim Cook during the company’s fiscal Q1 2025 earnings call. The Cupertino-based tech giant’s artificial intelligence (AI) features suite is currently available in only the English language, but the company plans to expand support to more languages starting in April. While Hindi is among these new languages, the company will introduce support for India-specific English language with an over-the-air update. Apple Intelligence Will Support More Languages During the quarterly earnings call, Cook announced, “We’re excited that Apple Intelligence will be available in even more languages this April.” The CEO also revealed revenue details of the company and called the October-December 2024 ******* “our best quarter ever”. Notably, Apple claimed to have generated a revenue of $124.3 billion (roughly Rs. 10.8 lakh crores). Apple’s first quarter of the current fiscal year was marked by the launch of the iPhone 16 series, where Apple Intelligence was a major talking point. However, the AI features did not roll out till the iOS 18.1 update in December, and they still support only the English language (localised for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the ***, and the US). Cook addressed the issue and announced that starting in April, the company’s AI suite will support multiple new languages. These include ********, English (India), English (Singapore), French, *******, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Apple’s support page also states support for additional languages will be added, but these were not mentioned. Notably, Hindi is not part of the planned expansion. Apple Intelligence is currently available with the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro models, iPad models with A17 Pro or M1 and newer, and Mac devices with M1 and newer. These features only work when the device is set to one of the supported languages and there is 7GB of storage available. Some of the AI-powered features available with Apple Intelligence include Genmoji, Image Playground, Writing Tools, Clean Up in Photos, natural language search in Photos, Notification Summaries, Priority Messages in Mail, Smart Replies in Mail and Messages, ChatGPT integration within Siri, and more. 16. Trump 2.0: This Sector May See a Big Performance Boost Trump 2.0: This Sector May See a Big Performance Boost Now that Donald Trump is starting his second term as President, reviewing sector performance during his first term is an interesting exercise. Some of the results may come as a surprise. Additionally, there is reason to believe that one sector that underperformed in Trump 1.0 could perform much better under Trump 2.0. Below, I’ll provide a breakdown of the best and worst-performing sectors in Trump’s first term and see how they compare to the Biden administration. I’ll also share where things could be different this time. I will suggest investments that could benefit significantly. Returns will use the State Street SPDR sector ETFs as their basis and range from the president’s first day in office to his last day. Trump 1.0: Strong Overall Performance, Tech, and Consumer Discretionary Shine In Trump’s first term, the returned an impressive 80%, solidly beating out the also strong 65% return during the Biden administration. Performance diverges significantly, however, when looking at individual sectors. The administration presided over a massive run-up in the information . The S&P 500 tech sector gained 174% under Trump and 84% under Biden. The second-best performing sector under Trump was , returning 109%. The sector managed only a 38% return under Biden. The third-best was , with an 81% return under Trump, compared to 26% under Biden. The most surprising difference in performance between these two presidents was in the . The sector provided a total return of -29% under Trump while returning 151% under Biden. This challenged the idea that Trump’s support for fossil fuels would boost energy while Biden’s focus on renewables would harm it. and prices soared, partially due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This helped energy companies’ profits reach new highs. To this day, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Crude Oil is nearly 40% higher than when Biden took office. Two other sectors, and , also outperformed significantly under Biden compared to Trump. Analyzing Sectors Expected to Benefit From Trump 2.0 At this point, many believe that those sectors that underperformed in Trump’s first term will benefit this time around, including energy and financials. The rationale stems largely from the view that Trump will have a staunchly deregulatory stance toward these sectors. His “Drill, baby, drill” sentiment and recent executive orders show a desire to increase energy production. Additionally, less regulation could raise oil companies’ margins by cutting compliance costs. However, the success of oil and gas stocks will still mostly revolve around oil and gas prices. This is something that the president has little control over, and increasing supply would likely lower prices. Trump tariffs could also hurt refining companies that rely on foreign oil to turn into gasoline. Overall, determining the true impact of a president on this sector is challenging. An area where Trump may be able to have a significantly larger effect is financials. Many expect merger and acquisition (M&A) activity to increase substantially under Trump. Multiple bank executives have already commented on the increased confidence in the business environment. This is already driving banks to see rapidly growing revenues in their investment banking divisions. When there is more M&A activity for these banks to advise on, fee revenues rise. Furthermore, many believe Trump could abolish the blanket capital requirement increases proposed in the Basel III Endgame regulation. Basel III Endgame is one of the most significant banking regulations since the Financial Crisis. A notable reduction in the scope of the regulation would be a boon to the industry. Lastly, many financial names that operate in the crypto space will likely benefit from Trump’s embrace of digital assets. Funds That Could Perform Well Under Trump The Trump administration could significantly benefit the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund and the Invesco ETF (NASDAQ:). However, I won’t go as far as to say that they will outperform all other sectors. The best-performing sectors will almost certainly result from circumstances out of the President’s control. Additionally, I believe the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund remains a strong play. Recent news surrounding DeepSeek sent many AI-driven stocks plummeting while others rose. The implications of DeepSeek don’t doom the tech sector as a whole by any means, but there will be winners and losers. This makes the diversification in the tech sector that XLK provides valuable going forward. 17. Coercive control to be treated like other domestic abuse offences Coercive control to be treated like other domestic abuse offences Getty Images Offenders convicted of coercive or controlling behaviour now face tougher management from police and probation services in England and Wales, meaning the crime is “on a par” with other domestic abuse offences. From Monday, those convicted of the crime and sentenced to 12 months or more will automatically be managed under multi-agency public protection arrangements (Mappa). Under Mappa, the police, probation, prison services and other agencies are legally required to work together to better manage the risks posed by the offenders. For the first time, it puts controlling or coercive behaviour on a par with other domestic abuse offences, including threats to kill and stalking, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said. Agenices are legally required under Mappa to share any information which indicates an increased risk to former partners and members of the public. Offenders managed under the scheme have a reoffending rate less than half of the national average, according to the MoJ. This story contains references to domestic abuse. If you are affected by any of the issues raised, help and support is available via BBC Action Line. Coercive control is a psychological type of domestic abuse where the perpetrator uses threats, humiliation and intimidation to harm and frighten the victim. Over a ******* of time, this can isolate the victim and deprive them of their independence. It is often seen alongside other forms of domestic abuse, and has been a criminal offence in the *** since 2015. A change in the law around the management of people convicted of controlling or coercive behaviour was introduced in the Victims and Prisoners Act 2024 by the previous government, and comes into force on Monday. Before this, those convicted could only be actively managed on a discretionary basis. The law change applies to offenders sentenced to at least 12 months’ imprisonment, including suspended sentences, or those given a hospital order for an offence of controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship. Jess Phillips, the minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls, said: “For the first time, under this change to the law, coercive or controlling behaviour is being placed where it belongs – on a par with serious violent offending.” Women’s Aid said it welcomed plans to treat the crime “seriously”. The charity’s chief executive Farah Nazeer said coercive control was a “key tool used by perpetrators of domestic abuse, as it isolates survivors and makes them dependent on an abuser”. She added that it was “essential” for specialist domestic abuse services to be routinely included in the Mappa process “if survivors are to be properly protected by this measure”. 19. OpenAI’s new Deep Research is the ChatGPT AI agent we’ve been waiting for – 3 reasons why I can’t wait to use it OpenAI’s new Deep Research is the ChatGPT AI agent we’ve been waiting for – 3 reasons why I can’t wait to use it OpenAI just revealed Deep Research, a new agentic capability in ChatGPT that lets you use AI to compile factual information in minutes, completely opening up new ways to use the world’s most popular chatbot. In the launch press release, OpenAI claims Deep Research “accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours.” Sounds a bit dystopian, right? It’s a move closer to a world where we can replace human labor with artificial intelligence. I wouldn’t blame you if the thought of AI compiling research papers and working as an analyst is a step too far, and at first glance, I wasn’t even interested in covering this new functionality as it’s heavily marketed towards businesses, rather than consumers. That was until I saw OpenAI’s examples of Deep Research’s capabilities in day-to-day tasks, and now I can’t wait to get my hands on the new ChatGPT agent. So what can Deep Research do? Deep Research has initially launched for $200 a month ChatGPT Pro subscribers, but OpenAI says the new capability will come to ChatGPT Plus and Team users in the future. At the time of writing, there’s no information on if, or when, Deep Research will become available for free tier users, although OpenAI does a good job at trickling down functionality over time. OpenAI’s website says, “Deep research is OpenAI’s next agent that can do work for you independently – you give it a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst.” Think of it as your very own analyst that can go off on its own and report back findings to you in just a few minutes. Whether you need a report on something as niche as the ***’s Hummingbird population, or as per OpenAI’s example, a research report on how the retail industry has transformed in the last three years, Deep Research has you covered. While the focus here is on compiling reports for businesses, medical research, and other professional use cases, it’s OpenAI’s three examples of what Deep Research can do for the average consumer that makes me incredibly excited to give the new functionality a try: 1. Needle in a Haystack (Image credit: OpenAI) This Deep Research example is probably my favorite of the three I’m going to discuss on this list. Do you always struggle to find movie names, songs, or any other random tidbits of information that should be easy to remember? Well, ChatGPT’s Deep Research could become your go-to AI tool. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Here, ChatGPT is given a rundown of a TV show with examples of a couple of episodes that the user can remember. One of the episodes has two men playing poker, two men getting locked in a room, and two men going to a butcher shop, with one bringing a gift of vodka. If you were to write this prompt to ChatGPT 4o, it would try to come back with the right answer, but more times than not it would miss the mark due to its lack of research. With Deep Research, not only is the AI agent able to find the exact TV episode you’re referring to but also gives you a breakdown of the details. In this example, the TV show is Counterpart and the scenes are found in Season 1, Episode 4. Just the ability to break down your prompt and research enough information to not only find an answer but give in-depth detail is something that we wouldn’t have thought possible just a few years ago. If you’re anything like me, this Deep Research functionality might become your new favorite way to use ChatGPT, and it should mean you never struggle to find that name on the tip of your tongue again. (Image credit: OpenAI) TechRadar provides awesome shopping advice when it comes to tech, but there are times when my colleagues and I just don’t have the expertise. Take finding the perfect snowboard for your next trip, for example, wouldn’t it be great if you could ask AI to compile in-depth research to help make that purchasing decision a breeze based on your needs? Well, Deep Research can, and it’s seriously impressive. In the example given, a quick prompt with information about a snowboard, slope conditions, and the area you’ll be snowboarding on, leads to an impressive response that not only gives some of the best options but also goes into detail about why these options are worth exploring. The agent takes on board all of the user’s requests and provides purchasing information that would otherwise take hours to compile yourself. 3. General Knowledge (Image credit: OpenAI) Deep Research gives more in-depth answers that should be more reliable thanks to the heavy amount of research that goes into giving a response. OpenAI gives a great example of asking “What’s the average retirement age for NFL kickers?” and showcases the difference between 4o and Deep Research with the results. 4o gives a sort of answer that deems the prompt too difficult to give an exact average. The model responds with a rough estimate of “between 35 and 40 years old”, although compared to Deep Research’s in-depth analysis it’s nowhere near as conclusive. Deep Research, on the other hand, dives deep into multiple sources and compiles factual information to determine that NFL kickers can retire at multiple ages and explains the range of retirement ages with examples. It’s a far more reliable answer and goes to show just how much Deep Research can improve responses when it comes to seeking answers using AI. While we don’t know exactly when Deep Research will be available for those of us who don’t pay for ChatGPT’s most premium tier, these examples are enough to get me excited about the future of ChatGPT and what it’s going to bring to the masses. 20. Bitcoin Dips Below $96,000 as Trump’s Trade War Influences Crypto Markets Bitcoin Dips Below $96,000 as Trump’s Trade War Influences Crypto Markets ‘s value drops below $100,000 amid geopolitical tensions, tariff impacts, and trading fluctuations. Bitcoin (BTC), the world’s leading cryptocurrency, is experiencing significant fluctuations amidst growing geopolitical tensions and market developments. The recent imposition of tariffs by President Donald Trump has sent ripples through the crypto market, causing Bitcoin’s value to fall below $100,000 and trading around the $96,000 level at the time of writing. Meanwhile, the ‘Kimchi Premium’ in South Korea has surged, raising short-term concerns for Bitcoin. On the policy front, India is reconsidering its stance on cryptocurrencies as global perspectives shift. Additionally, the stablecoin market has surpassed a $200 billion market cap, signaling potential upward movement in crypto prices. Bitcoin Price Dips Below $96k in Wake of Agressive US Trade Policies Bitcoin’s price has dipped to approximately $95,816, marking a decline of 1.85% from its previous close at the time of writing. This downturn comes in the wake of Trump’s aggressive trade policies, which have spooked investors and led to widespread sell-offs in the crypto market. The currency’s day low was recorded at $92,584, while its high stood at $97,618. The increased volatility is reflected in Bitcoin’s trading volume, which surged to $101 billion, highlighting the heightened trading activity as investors react to the unfolding global trade tensions. In South Korea, the ‘Kimchi Premium’—the price difference between Bitcoin on South Korean exchanges and other global exchanges—has jumped to 10%. This premium often indicates increased demand or speculative trading within the country, and its rise has raised alarms about potential price corrections for Bitcoin in the near term. Analysts suggest that this premium could lead to increased volatility as traders attempt to capitalize on the price discrepancies. Bitcoin News and Developments Around the World On the policy front, India is reportedly reassessing its crypto regulations, possibly influenced by the changing regulatory environment in other countries. With the global outlook on digital assets becoming more favorable, India might shift towards a more open stance on cryptocurrency usage and investment. The stablecoin sector is experiencing a surge, with the market cap surpassing $200 billion. This growth is seen as a potential catalyst for future price increases in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. As stablecoins provide a bridge between traditional finance and digital assets, their rising dominance could pave the way for broader adoption and integration of cryptocurrencies into mainstream financial systems. 23. Microsoft Paint Gets a New Copilot Menu, Windows Search Expanded to Support OneDrive Files Microsoft Paint Gets a New Copilot Menu, Windows Search Expanded to Support OneDrive Files Microsoft released a new Windows 11 Insider Preview build on Friday that makes changes to the Paint app and improves the Windows Search functionality. The new beta update is currently available to Windows Insider users in the Canary and Dev channels. With this, Microsoft Paint’s artificial intelligence (AI) features are now available inside a new Copilot menu. Additionally, the new semantic indexing in Windows Search also supports files saved in OneDrive. Notably, these features are coming to the Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft Paint Gets a Copilot Button In a blog post, Microsoft detailed the new features arriving with the new Windows 11 beta update. The features are part of the Windows 11 Insider preview build version 26120.3073 (KB5050090) and can be accessed via the Canary and Dev channels. The tech giant has not revealed when these features might be rolled out to all users globally. Microsoft has added several AI-powered features to the Paint app over the last two years. The Cocreator feature can generate AI images by taking input from whatever the user has doodled. Users also get an option to granularly control the level of AI enhancement to the drawn image. Similarly, Image Creator is a text-to-image tool that generates images based on a text prompt and art style chosen by the user. Additionally, Paint also has a Generative Erase feature that allows users to erase an unwanted object from an image and replace it by generating the background and blending it. Finally, the Remove Background feature lets users remove the background from any image with a single click. Copilot menu in Microsoft Paint Photo Credit: Microsoft With the new update, all of these images are now being placed inside a Copilot menu, which is placed near the right side of the toolbar. Once the dropdown menu is clicked, all the available features with a short description will be visible. Notably, the Cocreator feature is only available in Copilot+ PCs. Apart from this, Microsoft is also expanding the semantic indexing feature in Windows Search. First introduced last month in preview, the natural language search feature will now also support photos and files saved in OneDrive’s cloud storage. This feature will also be available to just the Copilot+ PC users. 24. Morgan Stanley downgrades U.S. Steel, sees limited growth opportunities ahead Morgan Stanley downgrades U.S. Steel, sees limited growth opportunities ahead United States Steel is running out of runway for growth, according to Morgan Stanley. The firm downgraded the steel stock to equal weight from overweight on Monday, alongside a $39 per share price target. Morgan Stanley’s forecast implies nearly 6% from Friday’s close. Analyst Carlos De Alba said that U.S. Steel stock is now currently trading right around its target valuation for the company, which leaves little room to run moving forward. “However, we no longer see meaningful upside to our standalone price target. While a deal with Nippon — or another party — may still happen, which is reflected in our $55/[share] bull case, we continue to set our price target on a standalone basis,” the analyst said. More broadly, De Alba said he expects steel prices to rise thanks to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, but added that those price rises could be kept in check by sluggish demand. The White House over the weekend announced levies on imports from Mexico, China and Canada. The move sparked a global market sell-off. Analysts are mostly positive on the stock. LSEG data shows eight of 12 analysts who cover the stock rate it as a buy or strong buy. U.S. Steel has slipped nearly 20% over the past year. X 1Y mountain United States Steel stock. 25. Russian paramilitary leader killed in Moscow blast Russian paramilitary leader killed in Moscow blast The leader of a pro-Russian paramilitary group in eastern Ukraine has died in hospital after being injured in an explosion in Moscow on Monday morning, Russian media have said. Armen Sargsyan, the leader of the “Arbat” battalion, was severely injured following a blast in the entrance hall of a residential building in north-west Moscow, 12km (7 miles) from the Kremlin. He was evacuated to a hospital by helicopter and placed in intensive care after the explosion, but eventually succumbed to his injuries, according to usually reliable Telegram sources. Others – including one of Armen Sargsyan’s bodyguards – were also reportedly seriously injured, with some sources saying one other person had died. In December, the Ukrainian security service SBU said “crime boss” Mr Sargsyan was a suspect in “recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine” and added that he had been on an international wanted list since May 2014 for his involvement in murders carried out in the centre of Kyiv. The SBU added that Mr Sargsyan was part of the inner circle of fugitive former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. “The assassination attempt on Sarkisyan was carefully planned and was ordered. Investigators are currently identifying those who ordered the crime,” TASS quoted a law enforcement official as saying. Images shared on social media show rubble and plaster strewn across a heavily damaged entrance hall with blown-out windows and doorways. Olga Voronova, a 36-year-old mother of three who lived in the building next door to the explosion, told AFP news agency that she was “very scared” and did not understand how the blast could’ve happened. “We have quite serious security guards, they ask every car at the checkpoints, we order passes for guests, even for family members,” she said. Mr Sargsyan was born in Gorlovka, a town in Ukraine’s Donetsk region which has been occupied by Russia since 2014. In a Telegram post confirming his death, the town’s mayor, Ivan Prikhodko, said Mr Sargsyan’s “most significant achievement was the creation and leadership of a separate special forces battalion”. Mr Prikhodko said Mr Sargsyan was also the head of the Boxing Federation of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. The “Arbat” battalion has been known to operate in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops are still present after they launched a surprise offensive in August. There have been a number of attacks on high profile supporters of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in Moscow and in occupied areas. Senior Russian naval officer Valery Trankovsky and Russian prison boss Sergei Yevsyukov died after car bombs exploded in Russian-occupied Ukraine in late 2024. And in December, a high-ranking general in the Russian armed forces and his assistant were killed in Moscow by Ukraine’s security service, a Ukrainian source told the BBC.
