  1. Signing Into Google Account Will Require Additional 2 Factor Authentication Verification: Report Signing Into Google Account Will Require Additional 2 Factor Authentication Verification: Report Google has added another layer of verification as part of its two-factor authentication (2FA) which now appears when signing into the Google account on an unrecognised device, according to a report. This change is said to arrive with the most recent version of Google Play Services and thus, is currently limited to Android phones. It reportedly adds another verification layer after the Are you trying to sign in prompt, requiring users to verify their identity via fingerprint authentication, PIN, or other credentials. Additional 2FA Requirement for Google Account Spotted by 9to5Google, this change is implemented with the latest Google Play Services version 25.02.34 on Android. Currently, signing into the Google account on an Android device requires users to enter their credentials, following which, a Are you trying to sign in prompt. They can tap the Yes, it’s me option and enter the number shown on their screen to login securely. With the added layer, they will again be prompted to verify their identity using either biometrics like facial and fingerprint recognition, or PIN, and pattern unlock. Alternatively, passkeys, security keys, or authenticator apps may also be used for the same. The user will reportedly continue to see Device, Near, and Time information in the background, taking a few extra seconds before providing access to the Google account compared to before. This move is speculated to add another layer of security when signing into the Google account as only those whose biometric credentials or PIN are stored on the device will be able to login. Gadgets 360 staff members could not confirm its availability on multiple devices, even with Google Play Services updated to the latest version. It is possible that Google’s new enhanced security measure might take a few days for it to show up on all devices. The report speculates that this feature may also show up on iOS devices, with the Gmail app responsible for the added security layer on Apple devices, instead of Google Play Services. 2. AI Study Finds Organic Molecules on Ceres Likely Came from Asteroid Impacts AI Study Finds Organic Molecules on Ceres Likely Came from Asteroid Impacts The presence of organic molecules on the dwarf planet Ceres has been reassessed using AI analysis of data gathered by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft. Scientists have mapped regions rich in these compounds to determine whether they originated within Ceres or were delivered from external sources. Previously, it was believed that cryovolcanic activity on Ceres transported these molecules from beneath the surface. However, recent findings indicate that these organics were likely deposited by asteroid impacts rather than being internally generated. Organic Deposits Mapped with AI Analysis According to the study conducted, AI-driven analysis of Dawn’s data has provided a comprehensive map of organic-rich areas on Ceres. The research was conducted by scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Germany. Spectral imaging data showed that these organic deposits were not associated with sites of cryovolcanism. Ranjan Sarkar, a scientist involved in the study, said that sites of such organic molecules are actually rare on Ceres, and devoid of any cryovolcanic signatures. This challenges previous assumptions that cryovolcanic activity was responsible for bringing organic material to the surface. Asteroids from the Outer Belt as a Possible Source As reported, the study suggests that organic compounds on Ceres were likely delivered by low-velocity asteroid impacts. Simulations indicate that asteroids from the outer asteroid belt frequently collide with Ceres, but their relatively slow speeds prevent organic materials from being destroyed by heat. Martin Hoffmann, a researcher at MPS, explained to Nature Astronomy that “at none of the deposits do we find evidence of current or past volcanic or tectonic activity: no trenches, canyons, volcanic domes or vents.” This reinforces the idea that these molecules arrived externally rather than being produced within Ceres. The findings support the possibility that organic molecules were present in the outer solar system early in its history and may have later been transported to inner planets, playing a role in the development of life on Earth. AC/DC announce first Scottish show in a decade AC/DC announce first Scottish show in a decade Rock legends AC/DC have announced they will play their first Scottish concert in a decade this summer. The group will play 12 dates across 10 countries before concluding their at Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh on 21 August. Formed in Australia in 1973, the band have a loyal Scottish fanbase through Scottish-born members Bon Scott and Angus and Malcolm Young. Fans last saw the band on Scottish soil in 2015 at Hampden Stadium but the group continue to be celebrated annually at BonFest in Kirriemuir. The Edinburgh show is the only performance the band will give in the *** with other dates across Europe starting in June. The Power Up tour, named after the band’s latest studio album, kicks off in the Czech Republic on 26 June. The album is the band’s first since the death of Malcolm Young in 2017. Lead singer Brian Johnson previously told the BBC the band still has a “big connection” with Scotland. He said when the band got together again to work on the album, they “really wanted to do something for Malcolm – just to make him proud. “He was the band,” he said. “Him and Angus started it, but it was Malcolm’s idea. He was our spiritual leader.” Malcolm and Angus Young were born and raised in Glasgow, moving to Australia in 1963. A decade later, the first iteration of AC/DC was formed. The line up went through many permutations, but stabilised around the Young brothers, singer Bon Scott – who was born in Angus and also moved to Australia – drummer Phil Rudd, and bassist Mark Evans. When Bon Scott died of alcohol poisoning in 1980, he was replaced as lead singer by Brian Johnson. The concert adds to an already busy line-up at Murrayfield this summer with Oasis set to perform three nights in August. AC/DC have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Tickets for the band’s European shows will be available from 10:00 on 7 February. 4. FromSoftware is ‘Not Chasing a Trend’ with Elden Ring Nightreign FromSoftware is ‘Not Chasing a Trend’ with Elden Ring Nightreign · · February 3, 2025 FromSoftware recently explained how Elden Ring Nightreign is not following a trend. In conversation with PCGamer (via GamesRadar), the game director, Junya Ishizaki, revealed how they are treating Elden Ring Nightreign and why it isn’t following a trend. Ishizaki stated that the developers are focusing on “condensing the experience down”, which includes the RPG stuff, the open-world nature, character development, and levelling up. Their plan was for everything to come together and turn into “a boss fight but in a more concentrated form.” The developers want to integrate a “new sense of accomplishment” not found in Elden Ring or other FromSoftware titles, along with “some new mechanics and some new elements” they can add to the game. They never really insisted on “let’s absolutely not do anything that other companies are doing or not follow any trends”; hence, they didn’t see Elden Ring Nightreign as “chasing a trend” but as elements that will work within their “multiplayer-focused session-based gameplay.” Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed last year at The Game Awards as a spinoff co-op action-adventure game slated to release in 2025. The game will allow you to play solo or as a trio on a smaller map based on the Limgrave region, with randomised enemies for each playthrough. The title is arriving for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. In other news, Elden Ring Nightreign’s network test will be on February 14. 5. Social media companies must mitigate harms from their products under overhaul of online safety laws Social media companies must mitigate harms from their products under overhaul of online safety laws Social media companies with the biggest reach or posing the highest risk to Australians will have to proactively mitigate harms from their products under an overhaul of online safety laws. The Federal Government is releasing Delia Rickard’s review of the Online Safety Act on Tuesday, more than three months after receiving it, but is unlikely to make the changes before the election. Ms Rickard made 67 recommendations with a duty of care putting the onus on big tech companies to protect their users at the centre. This would flip the laws from reactive takedowns of harmful material to a proactive stance with more transparency and enforcement options. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland promised last year the Government would legislate a duty of care. However, it is yet to respond to any of the other recommendations which include giving the eSafety Commissioner stronger powers and punishments ranging up to banning a platform from Australia as a last resort. It also recommends companies face fines of the larger of $50 million or 5 per cent of global turnover. The Government legislated $50 million fines along with its ban on children using social media but it yet to decide if it will add the percentage approach. Camera IconMinister for Communications Michelle Rowland. Credit: MICK TSIKAS/AAPIMAGE The review also says it should be easier for users to complain about cyber abuse with a “no wrong door” approach, new steps should be taken to deal with “pile ons” attacking someone based on a protected characteristic such as race or ******* orientation, and that the government should be able to set up groups of stakeholders to tackle “wicked problems” in an approach that has worked well for dealing with scams. Ms Rowland said the Government was continuing to carefully consider all the recommendations. “We are committed to strengthening our online safety laws to protect Australians – particularly young Australians,” she said. 7. How To Kill Schoene With A Coal Torpedo in Sniper Elite Resistance—Mission 6 Kill Challenge Explained How To Kill Schoene With A Coal Torpedo in Sniper Elite Resistance—Mission 6 Kill Challenge Explained Mission 6’s Assault on Fort Rouge is expansive and extremely dangerous. Before you get to the crux of the operation, you can find and kill Uwe Schoene, and doing so with a Coal Torpedo is part of Sniper Elite Resistance’s sub-objectives. Sniper Elite Resistance missions aren’t intended to be a one-time thing—quite the opposite. They can replayed with new strategies, you can approach objectives in new and imaginative ways, and Kill List subjects don’t have to be ended with a simple shot to the head. Sniper Elite’s creative juices flow best in the opportune moments, and Mission 6—Assault on Fort Rouge—has a bizarre-sounding Kill Challenge. You need to eliminate Uwe Schoene with a Coal Torpedo. I didn’t know what on Earth a Coal Torpedo was before I played Sniper Elite Resistance, but I do now, and you will too. How To Get Coal Torpedo in Sniper Elite Resistance Mission 6 Schoene is getting coal for Christmas. Image by Insider Gaming The Coal Torpedo is a small lump of coal found on the bottom floor of the building Uwe Schoene starts in by default at the beginning of Assault on Fort Rouge Mission 6. I’ll show you the easiest way I found to get the Coal Torpedo in Sniper Elite Resistance: Load up Assault on Fort Rouge. Use the default starting position: South Mountain Path. Enter the main part of the level through the starting stone bridge and gate. Carry on ahead and follow the natural road that curves around to the left. Looking at the Kill List building—which has a red border around it on the map—and enter from the most southwestern window. You enter a bush to get into the window. The Coal Torpedo is on the table to your left. Pick it up, and we can move on to using the device. Schoene should remain in this building as you progress. Unless you trigger alarms and cause enemies to swarm you, this is his base of operations, and he remains in them. If he leaves the building, I recommend quickly restart the mission and try again. How To Use Coal Torpedo in Sniper Elite Resistance Mission 6 Be careful. Image by Insider Gaming You need to sneak upstairs from the location where you found the Coal Torpedo, evade security, and place the Coal Torpedo in a gold container next to a fireplace. Once again, let me show you the optimal route to complete the task: Move forward and go through the doorway taking you into the main foyer. Turn right and go up the set of stairs. The first doorway on your right is very likely to have Uwe Schoene. Don’t enter, sneak around the giant room and reach the opposite side. Between a clothed table and a stack of objects with a white sheet is the room you go into. Approach the gold container next to the fireplace and press Use. Harry puts the Coal Torpedo inside the object. Now, hide nearby—behind a wooden desk or something obscuring. Schoene should walk into the room, grab the Coal Torpedo, and put it into the fire. Doing so makes the Coal Torpedo explode, killing Schoene, and completing the challenge! Don’t stop there as we have other Sniper Elite Resistance guides you need to check out: Mission 1 Workbenches, Mission 2 Workbenches, Mission 3 Workbenches, and all Propaganda Poster locations. 8. DSIT permanent secretary says more AI transparency needed DSIT permanent secretary says more AI transparency needed The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s (DSIT’s) most senior civil servant has said government must go further in improving transparency around the roll-out of artificial intelligence (AI) systems throughout the public sector. Asked by members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on 30 January 2025 how government can improve trust in the public sector’s increasing use of AI and algorithmic decision-making tools, DSIT permanent secretary Sarah Munby said “there’s more to do on transparency”, which can help build up trust in how automated tools are being used. Munby said the public sector needs to be clear where, for example, AI has been used in letters or e-mails from government to citizens (something she said is reflected in government guidance), as well as focus on how it communicates to people across the country on AI-related issues. She added that if government fails to be “demonstrably trustworthy”, it will ultimately become a “blocker of progress” for the further roll-out of AI tools. A major aspect of the government’s efforts here is the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS), which was designed in collaboration between DSIT and the Central Digital and Data Office (CCDO), and rolled out in September 2022 to improve public sector transparency and provide more information around the algorithmic tools they are using. While DSIT announced in February 2024 that it intended to make the ATRS a mandatory requirement for all government departments during 2024 (as well as expand its use to the broader public sector over time), the standard has been criticised over the lack of engagement with it so far, despite government having hundreds of AI-related contracts. In March 2024, the National Audit Office (NAO) highlighted how only eight of 32 organisations responding to its AI deployment survey said they were “always or usually compliant with the standard”. At that point, just seven records were contained in the ATRS. As it stands, there are currently 33 records contained in the ATRS, 10 of which were voluntarily published on 28 January by local authorities not covered by the central department mandate. Commenting on the ATRS, Munby admitted “we need to get more out”, noting that another “20 or so” are due to be published in February, with “lots more” to follow throughout the year. “It’s absolutely our view that they should all be out and published,” she said. “It takes a bit of time to get them up and get them running. It hasn’t been mandatory for that long, but … there’s been a significant acceleration in pace recently, and we expect that to continue.” Munby also highlighted that “getting the law right is an important component” of building trust. “There’s quite an extensive set of provisions in the Data [Use and Access] Bill which are about making sure that where automated decision-making takes place, there are really good forms of regress, including the ability to challenge [decisions],” she said. While the Labour government adopted almost every recommendation of the recently published AI action plan – which proposed increasing both trust and adoption in the technology through building up the ***’s AI assurance ecosystem – none of the recommendations mentioned transparency requirements. ‘Socially meaningful transparency’ In written evidence to the PAC published on 30 January, a group of academics – including Jo Bates, a professor of data and society at the University of Sheffield, and Helen Kennedy, a professor of digital society at the University of Sheffield – said it was key to have “socially meaningful transparency” around the use of public sector AI and algorithms. “Socially meaningful transparency focuses on enhancing public understanding of AI systems for informed use and democratic engagement in datafied societies,” they said. “This is important given the widely evidenced risks of AI, eg. algorithmic bias and discrimination, that publics are increasingly aware about. Socially meaningful transparency prioritises the needs and interests of members of the public over those of AI system developers.” They added that government should work to “reduce information asymmetries” around AI through the mandated registration of systems, as well as “by fostering discussion and decision-making between government and non-commercial third parties, including members of the public” about what AI-related information is released publicly. Further written evidence from Michael Wooldridge, a professor of computer science at the University of Oxford, also highlighted the need to increase public trust in government AI, where transparency can play an essential role. “Some people are excited about AI; but many more are worried about it,” he said. “They are worried about their jobs, about their privacy, and they may even be worried (wrongly) about existential threat. “However well-motivated the use of AI in government is, I think it is likely that the government use of AI will therefore be met by scepticism (at best), and hostility and anger at worst,” said Wooldridge. “These fears – however misplaced – need to be taken seriously, and transparency is absolutely essential to build trust.” Source link #DSIT #permanent #secretary #transparency #needed Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  9. Rubio lays down ultimatum to Panama over canal Rubio lays down ultimatum to Panama over canal US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday threatened action against Panama without immediate changes to reduce ******** influence on the canal, but the country’s leader insisted he was not afraid of a US invasion and offered talks. On his first trip overseas as the top US diplomat, Rubio took a guided tour of the canal accompanied by its Panamanian administrator as a South Korean-affiliated oil tanker and Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship passed through the vital link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. But Rubio was said to have had a firmer message in private, telling Panama that President Donald Trump had determined that the country had violated terms of the treaty that handed over the canal in 1999. He pointed to the “influence and control” of China over the canal, through which some 40 percent of US container traffic passes. Meeting President Jose Raul Mulino, Rubio “made clear that this status quo is unacceptable and that absent immediate changes, it would require the United States to take measures necessary to protect its rights under the treaty,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said. She did not spell out the consequences. But Trump has repeatedly refused to rule out military force. On Saturday, he imposed punishing tariffs on the top US trading partners — Canada, China and Mexico. Nearly 75 percent of cargo that went through the Panama Canal in the 2024 fiscal year came from the United States, with 21 percent from China, followed by Japan and South Korea, according to official statistics. Rubio and Trump say China has gained so much power through surrounding infrastructure that it could shut the canal down in a potential conflict and spell catastrophe for the United States. “China’s running the Panama Canal,” Trump insisted Sunday. “It was not given to China, it was given to Panama foolishly,” he told reporters as he returned to Washington from a weekend in Florida. “But they violated the agreement and we’re going to take it back, or something very powerful is going to happen.” He later added that he did not think US troops would be “necessary” in Panama. – Panama offers cooperation – Mulino painted a rosier portrait of his meeting with Rubio, whom he welcomed Rubio at his official residence in the tropical capital’s old quarter. He also announced that Panama would not be renewing an agreement to participate in China’s Belt and Road project — a massive infrastructure initiative spearheaded by Beijing — which the country had signed onto under a previous administration. “I don’t feel that there is any real threat at this time against the treaty, its validity, or much less of the use of military force to seize the canal,” Mulino told reporters. “Sovereignty over the canal is not in question,” he said, proposing technical-level talks with Washington to clear up concerns. Mulino previously ordered an audit of a Hong Kong-based company that controls ports on both sides of the canal but Trump said the step was not enough. Mulino, who until Trump’s criticism was widely regarded as a staunch US ally, also promised to step up cooperation on the new administration’s top priority — repatriating undocumented migrants. Mulino offered Rubio the use of an airstrip in the town of Meteti in Darien, the dense, prohibitive jungle that has nonetheless become a major crossing point for migrants seeking to exit South America en route to the United States. The deportation plan “suits us very well, to be honest,” Mulino said. Former president Joe Biden already sealed a deal after Mulino’s election last year to provide $6 million to assist in expelling migrants. They include Venezuelans and Ecuadorans but also Haitians desperate even for a roundabout way out of their violence-ravaged country. Few are from Panama, one of Latin America’s wealthiest countries. Rubio is expected to focus on migration on the four other stops of his trip — El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. – Protests against Rubio – Small but intense protests broke out in Panama ahead of Rubio’s visit, with protesters burning him in effigy and police firing tear gas. The Panama Canal — which Trump has dubbed a modern “wonder of the world” — was built by the United States and opened in 1914 at the cost of thousands of lives of laborers, mostly people of African descent from Barbados, Jamaica and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Jimmy Carter negotiated the agreement that gave the canal to Panama, with the late president seeing a moral imperative for a superpower to respect a smaller country. Trump takes a vastly different view and has returned to the “big stick” approach of the early 20th century, in which the United States threatened force to have its way. sct-mis-st/dhc/sn Source link #Rubio #lays #ultimatum #Panama #canal Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  10. More than a million miss tax return deadline More than a million miss tax return deadline An estimated 1.1 million people missed the deadline for filing their annual tax returns, according to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). They now face a penalty of at least £100 for missing the cut-off at the end of the day on Friday, the tax authority has said, unless they can provide a valid excuse for failing to file. More than 11.5 million people did complete the self-assessment process, including more than 31,000 who finished it during the final hour before the deadline. People who are self-employed or who have more than one source of income are among those required to file a tax return every year. Most also ensure they pay, or organise the payment, of tax owed. However, some aiming to pay their tax on Friday may have faced greater stress as a result of IT problems at Barclays. While that may have caused frustration and some panic, most would not need to pay the tax until the start of March, so would not be fined as a result – assuming they completed the self-assessment process on time. For those who missed the deadline, the financial penalties include: An initial £100 penalty, even if there is no tax to payAdditional daily penalties of £10 a day after three months, up to a maximum of £900After six months, a further penalty of 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greaterAfter 12 months, the higher of another 5% of the tax due or £300 charge “I’m urging anyone who missed the deadline, to submit their return as soon as possible to avoid any further penalties,” said Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s director general for customer services. There are also fines for late payment of the tax owed, with interest added on top. Appeals against a fine can be made either by filing in a form or by writing a letter to HMRC, but a self-assessment must have been completed before making an appeal. HMRC recently denied running a “deliberately poor” phone service in an attempt to push taxpayers to seek help online instead. Chief executive Jim Harra said the claims by a committee of MPs about its customer service were “completely baseless”. New rules mean this time around, for the first time, online platforms such as eBay and Vinted must tell HMRC about sales information from people selling 30 items or more or who earned at least £1,700. The authority will assess those details against individual tax returns. The rules, which took effect in January, do not mean there is a new tax charge for these sellers, just that more information is shared to ensure they are paying the correct amount of tax. 12. Teraswitch upgrades global net with EXA 400GE connectivity Teraswitch upgrades global net with EXA 400GE connectivity Just days after signing binding agreements to acquire Aqua Comms as a specialist operator of transatlantic and intra-European subsea infrastructure, EXA Infrastructure has partnered with IT infrastructure firm Teraswitch to provide 400GE connectivity and position it for global network expansion. Pittsburgh-based Teraswitch specialises in global, low-latency infrastructure for Web3, gaming, content streaming and high-frequency trading clients. It recently deployed its global network, featuring 100GE waves to connect cities across the US and Europe. However, due to growing connectivity demands fuelled by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and streaming platforms, it has come to the conclusion that 100GE alone was insufficient, driving the need for further development of the capabilities of its network. EXA Infrastructure claims to run the largest dedicated digital infrastructure platform throughout Europe, connecting North America and Asia via the Middle East. It regards the strategic upgrade for Teraswitch as enhancing bandwidth, reduces costs and positioning the company to scale rapidly in a competitive market. By upgrading Teraswitch’s services to 400GE, EXA is confident it has provided diverse, high-capacity connectivity, including services across Europe and the Atlantic. The upgrade is said to not only increase bandwidth, but also significantly reduce cost per megabit, enabling the operator to pass on competitive pricing to its customers. Enhanced service-level agreements are also said to further underscore the value of this partnership, ensuring greater reliability and network performance for clients. Going forward, Teraswitch said it had “ambitious” plans to expand its network reach to additional continents by 2025. EXA Infrastructure is proud to be a cornerstone of this growth strategy, reaffirming its role as a trusted partner in enabling Teraswitch’s global ambitions. “Our partnership with EXA Infrastructure has been instrumental in our ability to scale quickly and cost-effectively,” said Teraswitch CEO Brendan Mannella. “Upgrading to 400GE not only helps us meet the growing demands of our customers, but also strengthens our position in the global market. EXA’s reliability, ease of doing business and innovative approach have been key factors in our success, and we look forward to expanding this partnership as we grow our network further in 2025.” Jim Fagan, CEO at EXA Infrastructure, said: “Teraswitch’s decision to upgrade to 400GE speaks to the strength of our relationship and our ability to deliver solutions that scale with customers in line with their ambitions. This partnership underscores our shared commitment to innovation, network reliability and helping customers thrive in today’s data-driven world.” The Teraswitch deal comes right after a 2024 that saw EXA forge a series of partnerships and extensions of its core transatlantic routes in 2024, and at the end of the year, the launch of a managed fibre network service to address market demands for increased connectivity and shorter service delivery times. EXA added that its offerings are driven specifically by advancements in AI, cloud computing, content transmission and big data that are resulting in the need for international networks to scale to meet such growing demands quickly. 13. Teenage girl killed in shark attack near Brisbane Teenage girl killed in shark attack near Brisbane A teenage girl has died after being attacked by a shark in Queensland, Australia. Paramedics responded to reports of a “serious shark bite incident” at Woorim Beach, just north of Brisbane, around 16:45 local time (06:45 GMT) on Monday, Queensland Ambulance Service wrote on X. Police confirmed that the girl had suffered life-threatening injuries and died shortly after 17:00. *********** media reports that she was 17 years old. The waters around the beach are home to many sharks, but the attack occurred close to shore in the popular surfing spot, which has measures to protect against sharks. Police confirmed the girl had been swimming in the waters off Bribie Island – just off the mainland, on which Woorim Beach sits – when she was attacked by the shark, the species of which has not been identified. The Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the victim suffered life-threatening injuries to her upper body. She was bitten on the arm around 100m from shore, *********** media reports. Christopher Potter arrived at the beach shortly after the attack happened. He told ABC News: “There are a lot of swimming groups that swim along here, morning and afternoon. “It’s known there are a lot of sharks around Bribie, but this close to shore, it’s still a shock.” The waters near the beach are protected with drumlines – barrels anchored to the sea floor which have baited hooks to catch sharks that get too close. Target species caught in these are then euthanised, while other species are relocated and released. Police said they will prepare a report on Monday’s incident for the coroner. It is the second shark fatality in Australia’s waters this year, after surfer Lance Appleby was killed off the coast of South Australia on 2 January. The last fatal attack in the Greater Brisbane area came in 2006, when 21-year-old Sarah Whiley was killed while swimming with friends. Shark attacks in Queensland “happen rarely and most shark species do not pose a risk to people”, according to the state government’s website. 15. Bad news, PC gamers: this retailer’s worst-case prediction for the Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU is a long wait until almost June for the GPU to be back in stock Bad news, PC gamers: this retailer’s worst-case prediction for the Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU is a long wait until almost June for the GPU to be back in stock Nvidia RTX 5090 supply is looking very shaky according to a *** retailer Overclockers has a worst-case ETA of 16 weeks for RTX 5090 stock The RTX 5080 is better, but could still take up to six weeks before it’s available to buy again Nvidia’s RTX 5090 stock situation is rather dire, to say the least, and could stay that way for longer than you’d expect – and the RTX 5080 is looking unhealthy inventory-wise, too, going by the prediction of one *** retailer. As you doubtless realize if you’ve been mulling a purchase of either of the new Blackwell graphics cards, the RTX 5090 and 5080 are out of stock everywhere (except on auction sites where scalpers are flogging their ill-gotten GPUs at massively inflated asking prices, of course). According to a major components retailer in the ***, Overclockers (OCUK), RTX 5090 and 5080 stock is sold out and (unsurprisingly) pre-orders aren’t being offered any longer, and they won’t be until the company has “greater clarity on availability and have fulfilled the pre-orders we have taken.” RTX 50 Series Stock Update 31/01/2025Stock UpdateRTX 5090 sold out and pre-orders ceasedRTX 5080 sold out and pre-orders ceasedDue to incredibly high demand and limited stock, all 50 Series cards sold shortly after launch with some pre-orders taken in restricted quantities.…January 31, 2025 We are told by OCUK (in the above post on X) that the ETA for stock of the RTX 5090 is three to 16 weeks, and the ETA for the RTX 5080 is two to six weeks, a bit more palatable, but still a potentially long wait. Note that pre-orders that have been successfully placed with OCUK (but not yet dispatched) are in a ******, and the retailer is “working with our supply chain to fulfill these within the ETAs above, or sooner if possible.” (Image credit: Future / John Loeffler) Analysis: Another GPU launch hit with stock misery Surely a bit of stock of these RTX 5000 GPUs is going to be coming in over the course of February? That must be the case (I assume), but the way in which the above statement is worded makes it sound to me like the small amount of Blackwell graphics cards that will be arriving is going towards fulfilling existing pre-orders. So, there won’t be any available stock to actually buy on the OCUK site for quite some time – maybe towards the lengthier end of the ETAs provided. The fact that the RTX 5090 is pushed out to a possible 16 weeks is going way past the most pessimistic thoughts I was having, though. That would put us at almost the end of May before the ‘Buy’ button lights up again on some of the flagship Blackwell models, an eyebrow-raising prospect. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Perhaps more disappointing is the news that this retailer isn’t going to have stock of the RTX 5080, a much less niche proposition than the RTX 5090, for maybe up to six weeks. That’d put us in the middle of March before the graphics card was available again (perhaps only briefly). We shouldn’t get carried away with the timeframes from just one retailer, of course, and the worst-case scenarios presented by OCUK – but this does, of course, broadly reflect everything we’re seeing right now. And the general accusation of a ‘paper launch’ being leveled at Nvidia, meaning a launch with no real quantity of stock behind it (in the face of major demand). Unless we do get a quick recovery for RTX 5080 stock that runs against OCUK’s expectations – we don’t expect the RTX 5090 to be back on shelves quickly by any means, especially given that its Blackwell chip (GB202) is more profitable in AI graphics cards, not gaming products – a lot of hope lies with the incoming RTX 5070. Nvidia’s RTX 5070 vanilla version uses a different GB205 chip – the RTX 5070 Ti is built with GB203 (a rumor that’s now confirmed), also the engine of the RTX 5080 – and so we can hope that Nvidia has more of a depth to its GB205 production, especially as the RTX 5070 is coming a bit later. (If rumors are right, perhaps at the end of February – there’s even talk of a delay to March, which wouldn’t be a positive development, of course). All in all, though, the situation looks distinctly rocky with Blackwell stock for now, and AMD has a chance to fully capitalize on this by building up good levels of RDNA 4 supply at retail for the launch of its RX 9070 models in March, to take on Nvidia’s RTX 5070 graphics cards. This is a clear opportunity for Team Red in the mid-range bracket of the GPU market, although AMD has had its own missteps with the RDNA 4 launch, it must be said. Those looking for an Nvidia Blackwell graphics card should keep an eye on our guides on where to buy an RTX 5090 and an RTX 5080 respectively, where we’ll keep you up to date should we spot stock coming back in at big retailers. Best of luck out there, GPU hunters, but for now, the outlook remains seriously bleak. 18. Nvidia counters AMD DeepSeek benchmarks, claims RTX 4090 is nearly 50% faster than 7900 XTX Nvidia counters AMD DeepSeek benchmarks, claims RTX 4090 is nearly 50% faster than 7900 XTX After getting beaten by the Radeon RX 7900 XTX in DeepSeek AI benchmarks that AMD published, Nvidia has come back swinging, claiming its RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 GPUs are significantly faster than the RDNA 3 flagship. Nvidia countered in a blog post that the RTX 5090 is up to 2.2x faster than the RX 7900 XTX. Nvidia benchmarked the RTX 5090, RTX 4090, and RX 7900 XTX in three DeepSeek R1 AI model versions, using Distill Qwen 7b, Llama 8b, and Qwen 32b. Using the Qwen LLM with the 32b parameter, the RTX 5090 was allegedly 124% faster, and the RTX 4090 47% faster than the RX 7900 XTX. Using Llama 8b, the RTX 5090 was 106% faster, and the RTX 4090 was 47% faster than the RX 7900 XTX. Using Qwen 7b, the RTX 5090 was 103% quicker, and the RTX 4090 was 46% more performant than the RX 7900 XTX. (Image credit: Nvidia) Nvidia’s results are a slap in the face to AMD’s own benchmarks featuring the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080. The RX 7900 XTX was faster than both Ada Lovelace GPUs except for one instance, where it was a few percent slower than the RTX 4090. The RX 7900 XTX was up to 113% quicker and 134% faster than the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080, respectively, according to AMD. Nvidia provides a significantly different picture with the RTX 4090, showing that the RTX 4090 is considerably faster than the RX 7900 XTX, not the other way around. The icing on the cake (for Nvidia) is that the RTX 5090 more than doubled the RTX 4090’s performance results, thoroughly crushing the RX 7900 XTX. This is a good reminder to take manufacturer-provided benchmark results with a pinch of salt. Nvidia’s results might not even be correct, but regardless, AMD and Nvidia provide results that contradict each other. DeepSeek R1 is a new AI model that has blown away the industry, providing competitive performance with the best AI models out there but requiring 11 times less computing power. DeepSeek’s incredible achievement was solely responsible for Nvidia losing nearly $600 billion in market capital in a single day. KeyBanc upgrades Zillow, calls for more than 25% upside ahead as home sales climb KeyBanc upgrades Zillow, calls for more than 25% upside ahead as home sales climb KeyBanc said Zillow has more room to run ahead as the housing market improves. The firm upgraded the real estate marketplace to overweight from sector weight. Its price target of $100 implies upside of 26.3%. Analyst Sergio Segura highlighted Zillow’s app experience and innovation as a catalyst for stock growth. He added that an increase in existing home sales could serve as a macroeconomic tailwind for the firm. “We believe Zillow’s integrated app experience and increased penetration of enhanced markets can continue driving mid-teens growth in a historically challenging real estate market,” Segura said “Coupled with high incremental margins and a disciplined investment framework, we believe Zillow is poised for outsized margin expansion.” The analyst added that Zillow also works as a “one-stop shop for all things real estate” is already broadening out to rentals and mortgages. Segura raised his full-year revenue estimates for 2025 and 2026 by 1% and 3%, respectively. “Although expectations are for the housing market to improve in 2025E, we still see upside potential to consensus estimates even if this does not materialize,” the analyst said. Analyst sentiment on the stock is split. Of the 28 who cover Zillow, 15 have a buy or strong buy rating, according to LSEG. The remaining 13, however, rate it a hold or underperform. We need to do more, much more, to ramp up defence production and increase our defence industrial readiness. We can do all this in a way that respects the constitutional specificities of Member States. The best investment in European security is investing in the security of Ukraine.” “Second, we need to do more to finance this protection.” “Investing in security, is not just about protection – it is about boosting European competitiveness, driving growth, creating quality high-skilled jobs and powering everyday breakthroughs that improve how we live, work and connect. “Public funding can take us far but we know it will not be enough. This makes mobilising private capital essential. When it comes to the EIB’s mandate, the European Parliament has long emphasised the need to maximise its capacity to leverage private funding for the security and defence sector.” “The real incentive lies in addressing fragmentation within our markets. Different rules, standards, and systems are putting up barriers and risk holding us back. It makes no sense for Europe to have 178 different weapons systems, when the United States has 30.” “Third, we need to coordinate better.” “Fragmentation costs us billions: between 25 and 75 billion Euro are lost due to duplication and inefficiencies. The answer to this is staring us right in the face. Now is the time to move forward with a single market for defence.” “Defence – Trade – Political reality. The expectation on us is high. 23. Lady Gaga returns to roots on dance song Abracadabra Lady Gaga returns to roots on dance song Abracadabra Lady Gaga has dropped the new dance song Abracadabra. The Poker Face hit maker shared the striking music promo for the track from her upcoming seventh studio album Mayhem during an ad break at the Grammy Awards. True to form, it’s a high-drama video with the 38-year-old star donning a bold red latex ensemble with a giant studded hat and opening the clip by declaring: “The category is dance or die.” Sonically, it’s a return to 2011’s Born This Way era. Gaga had said in a statement about the follow-up to 2020’s Chromatica: “The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved.” The album features previous singles Disease and her Grammy-winning Bruno Mars duet, Die with a Smile, which earned the pair the best pop group/duo performance Grammy. “Gaga, I’m so honoured to be a part of this song with you,” Mars, 39, gushed in his acceptance speech. “I’m so honoured to have a small part in your giant musical legacy and I really truly believe that God gave us this song to sing together, so thank you so much.” In her own speech, Gaga gave a moving tribute to the transgender community after President Donald Trump stripped back the freedoms of LGBTQI people in the US. “It is a privilege to be a songwriter, a producer, (and) a musician,” she said. “It’s such an honour to sing for all of you and I just wanna say tonight, that trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. “The ****** community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love. Thank you.” Gaga and Mars also covered California Dreamin’ by The Mama and the Papas in tribute to Los Angeles amid the ongoing wildfires. Meanwhile, Gaga recently teased that her new album “breaks a lot of rules”. The Bad Romance singer will drop her new record Mayhem on March 7, and she opened up on how all bets are off when it comes to the sound and genres, describing the collection as “utter chaos”. “The record just feels good to me,” she told the March 2025 issue of ELLE ***. “It sounds good. It breaks a lot of rules and has a lot of fun.” The megastar admitted she had to be “cutthroat” when it came to cutting down all the songs she’d written and settle on the 14 songs that make up the track list. “‘Mayhem’ is about following your own chaos into whatever cranny of your life that it takes you to,” she said. “And in that way, it was about following the songs. Writing as many songs as I did for this album was a labour of total love. “And then you just have to be very cutthroat by the end.” Source link #Lady #Gaga #returns #roots #dance #song #Abracadabra Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  24. Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures tank after Trump hits Canada, Mexico, China with tariffs Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures tank after Trump hits Canada, Mexico, China with tariffs US stock futures on Monday pointed to sharp losses for the major indexes, as Wall Street showed the effects of President Donald Trump’s announcement of tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada. Nasdaq 100 futures (NQ=F) dived 1.7%, leading the way down but paring losses notched earlier in the morning. S&P 500 futures (ES=F) spiraled 1.5%, and futures attached to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) tumbled 1.3%, or around 580 points. The tariffs, set to take effect on Tuesday, will include 25% duties on Canada and Mexico, and 10% on China. Energy imports from Canada will be lower with a 10% duty. Trump has also said tariffs on Europe will “definitely happen”, but gave no further detail. European stock markets (^STOXX) on the start of trading on Monday. The US dollar index (DX-Y.NYB, DX=F) rose to trade near its highest levels in 12 months. Meanwhile, crude oil (BZ=F, CL=F) futures jumped around 2%. With Trump’s tariffs arriving as expected over the past week, focus has been honed in on retaliatory announcements. As Yahoo Finance’s Ben Werschkul reported, Canada and Mexico were quick to announce measures across a range of US goods. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will place 25% counter-tariffs on around $107 billion in American-made products. The trade war is causing “considerable uncertainty about President Trump’s trade agenda for 2025.” That uncertainty is a large part of the Fed’s desire to keep a hold on rates for fears of a rise in inflation. The tariffs are due to impact consumers directly across a number of industries. Automobiles and auto parts, gas and oil, clothes, computers, ********, and avocados are a small selection of items whose prices are expected to rise. LIVE 8 updates Big Three US automaker stocks retreat Shares of big US automakers Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) sank in Monday’s pre-market trading, mirroring a drop in European peers’ stocks. GM fell 6.5%, while Ford moved about 4% lower. Stellantis, the last of the traditional Big Three, saw its US-listed stock retreated roughly 6%. Electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) shed about 2%. Carmakers are among the industries likely to take the biggest hit from the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, given they are heavily reliant on cross-border trade. Between 25% and 40% of the vehicles the Big Three sell in the US are imported from one of those two countries, per a Financial Times report. Ford CEO Jim Farley told Yahoo Finance last week that he expected Trump’s tariff positioning to play out beyond February, but signaled the company could withstand them better than its rivals as it has the largest US manufacturing footprint. See more here. Keep a close eye on footwear and clothing stocks Spring break and back-to-school shopping may cost quite a bit more thanks to Trump’s new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. Here are the footwear and clothing retailers most expoto the new tariffs, according to data from Stifel analyst Jim Duffy: How the market views tariffs The reactions from Wall Street on Trump’s tariffs are trickling in, and universally folks view them as bad for the economy and bad for markets. I put some of the reactions that stood out to me here. But I liked what Goldman Sachs strategist David Kostin said this morning on the tariff front. It’s a good reminder as to what companies are now up against: “If company managements decide to absorb the higher input costs, then profit margins would be squeezed. If companies pass along the higher costs to its end customers, then sales volumes may suffer. Firms may try to push back on their suppliers and ask them to absorb part of the cost of the tariff through lower prices.” Goldman: S&P 500 risks slump as tariffs hit earnings US stocks face a 5% drop this year amid a hit to earnings if the Trump administration lets its hefty tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China run for a while, Goldman Sachs has warned. Goldman strategist David Kostin said sustained tariffs could reduce his S&P 500 earnings growth forecast by about 2% to 3%. The benchmark could come under pressure from a hit to earnings and equity valuations, driving down the fair value of the S&P 500, he told clients in a note. Kostin joins a panoply of Wall Street analysts cautioning about the impact of the tariffs on the economy and stock market. JP Morgan’s metals and mining team said it sees the biggest financial risks to Alcoa (AA), GrafTech International (EAF), and Cleveland Cliffs (CLF). China is keen to kick off trade talks with the US, and it is laying the groundwork for a push to head off ******* tariff hikes and tech curbs, The Wall Street Journal reported. Europe stocks tumble as automakers take a hit European stocks fell sharply early on Monday amid fears the region is next in line for tariff hikes by the Trump administration. The Stoxx 600 (^STOXX), the pan-European benchmark, slumped 1.3% as investors weighed President Donald Trump’s comment that tariffs would “definitely happen” for EU imports to the US. Germany’s DAX (^GDAXI) fell 1.6%, while the CAC 40 (^FCHI) in Paris dropped 1.5%. Shares in carmakers, which are more sensitive to tariffs, led the sell-off, with Stellantis down 6%. Asian markets slide as Trump tariffs make impact Asian markets, the first to open since President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement, have seen big slides as investors react to a trade war poised to erupt. Major Asian indexes all saw heavy losses throughout the day’s trade as The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell more than 2%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was down 0.7%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was 2.8% lower, South Korea’s Kospi tumbled 3% and Australia’s ASX 200 fell 1.9%. Markets in mainland China have remained closed for the Lunar New Year holiday, but with China being singled out for a 10% tariff on exports we can expect to see a similar downturn. Currently, Beijing has not announced a plan of economic retaliation. Instead there have been calls to “meet China halfway” from the ******** ministry of Commerce in negotiations around the upcoming implementation of duties. Some of the biggest sectors to see downturns from the tariffs include: Automakers saw shares drop of at least 5% in household names such as Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC) and Nissan (7201.T) ******** e-commerce platforms are under fire as the “de minimus” trade exemption for small package is getting expired. Leading to impacts on costs for clothing, accessories, home goods and electronics. Asia’s biggest chip exporters, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSM) . and Samsung Electronics Co (005930.KS)., dipped by 1% as Trump said he would tax the essential components of electronics. Oil jumped Sunday in response to sweeping tariffs placed by President Donald Trump on a range of imports — including crude from Canada and Mexico. Consumers can expect a rise in energy prices over the coming weeks in response to the rise in crude. West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) futures hit as high as $75.18 a barrel, over a 3% rise, while Brent crude (BZ=F) topped out around $76 with a 1% bump. Crude oil is one of the commodities subject to a reduced duty of 10% as part of an understanding that Canada and the US have a heavy dependency on each other to fulfill their energy needs. The US imports nearly 4 million barrels a day from Canada. The tariff announcement led to gas futures pumping upwards by just shy of 3%. Trump has flagged even wider tariffs in the coming months, including against the European Union and covering an ever-increasing variety of goods and industries. Prices can be expected to shift roughly as the president warned “THERE WILL BE PAIN” in a post on Truth Social late Sunday.
