A flurry of international naval drills around the Philippines prompts complaints from Beijing
A flurry of international naval drills around the Philippines prompts complaints from Beijing
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A flurry of naval drills surrounding the Philippines involving the United States and its partners has prompted complaints from Beijing, which claims the entire South China Sea and accuses Manila of colluding with others to destabilize the region.
The U.S. 7th Fleet based in Japan said forces from Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and the U.S. conducted a “multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity” within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone on Wednesday.
Such drills “strengthen the interoperability of our defense/armed forces doctrines, tactics, techniques, and procedures,” the fleet said in a news release. The maneuvers were taking place within the Philippines’ zone, but the fleet gave no details on the exact location.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
More exercises involving the U.S., Japan and France were planned for later this week in the Philippines Sea, which China does not claim.
That exercise “is designed to advance coordination and cooperation between French, Japanese and U.S. maritime forces while simultaneously demonstrating capabilities in multi-domain operations,” the fleet said.
The U.S. aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, French carrier Charles De Gaulle and Japan’s Izumo-class multi-functional destroyer Kaga will take part in the drill starting Saturday, along with their escorts and air wings, the fleet said.
France’s participation is especially significant because of the distance from its home base, 6,000 kilometers (3,700 miles) away in Toulouse, commander of the Carrier Strike Group Rear Adm. Jacques Mallard was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Tian Junli, spokesperson for China’s Southern Theater Command, accused the Philippines of “colluding with outside countries to organize ‘so-called joint patrols’, ” which he said ”destabilize the region,” ******** state media said on Thursday.
Tian said the Philippines actions were “an attempt to endorse its ‘******** claims’ in the South China Sea and ”undermine China’s maritime rights and interests.” He specifically pointed to U.S.-Philippines joint patrols on Tuesday and said China had carried out its own patrols in the region on Wednesday.
China is one of six regional powers that claims the strategic South China Sea in part or in whole, ignoring a ruling by a United Nations-backed court that tossed out most of its claims and building human-made islands equipped with airstrips and other infrastructure of military use. China’s coast guard and maritime militia frequently clash with ships from fellow claimants Vietnam and the Philippines.
Though it claims not to disrupt shipping or overflights in the sea, through which an estimated $5 trillion in global trade transits each year, China is adamantly opposed to foreign military shipping in the area.
The waterway is also believed to be sitting atop vast undersea deposits of oil and gas and while China says it wants to come to a negotiated agreement about the use of the sea, such efforts have made little progress.
China says the U.S. and other countries that don’t border on the sea should have no say in affairs concerning it, although the U.S. — which takes no formal stand on sovereignty issues involving the sea — has maintained bases and alliances in the region long before China made its formal claim to sovereignty using the so-called “eight dash line.”
Beijing is especially angered over U.S. “freedom of navigation operations” in which Navy ships sail close to ********-held maritime features to show Washington does not recognize China’s sovereignty claims.

USAID could slash staff to hundreds after placing most on leave
USAID could slash staff to hundreds after placing most on leave
America’s foreign aid agency could see its staff slashed from about 10,000 to fewer than 300 globally as the Trump administration makes major cuts to government spending.
All but a handful of essential staff are already set to be placed on administrative leave at midnight on Friday, including thousands based abroad. An online notice says a plan is being prepared for return travel and the termination of non-essential contractors.
One union representing employees – which is involved in a legal challenge to the plan – told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that just 294 staff have been deemed essential.
Trump’s cutbacks to USAID – championed by his cost-cutting advisor Elon Musk – have upended the global aid system, with hundreds of programmes already frozen in countries around the world.
His team accuses USAID of wasting taxpayer money and failing to align with “America First” policy priorities.
Polling has indicated scepticism among many Americans for foreign aid. An AP-NORC poll from March 2023 suggested as many as nine in 10 Republicans felt the country was overspending.
The US is by far the biggest single provider of humanitarian aid around the world. It has bases in more than 60 countries and works in dozens of others, with much of its work carried out by its contractors.
The reported cutback plan that would leave fewer than 300 staff was described as “outrageous” by former USAID chief Brian Atwood. Speaking to the Reuters news agency, he suggested the move could kill an agency that had saved millions of lives.
The American Foreign Service Association union (AFSA), which suggested that only 294 staff were on the “essential” list, has teamed up with another labour group, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), to file a lawsuit over the plan.
In addition to Trump, the lawsuit takes aim at the US state department, USAID, the treasury department, the secretary of state and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The lawsuit argues that the president is violating the US Constitution and federal law by attempting to dismantle the agency. “Not a single one of defendants’ actions to dismantle USAID were taken pursuant to congressional authorization,” it says.
“And pursuant to federal statute, Congress is the only entity that may lawfully dismantle the agency.”
It calls for an independent acting director of USAID to be appointed, for USAID buildings to be reopened to employees, for the USAID website to be restored, for grants and contracts to be reinstated, and for mandatory evacuation notices to staff to be lifted.
It asks for a judge to immediately halt the implementation of the plan to “gut” USAID, which the lawsuit notes has been spearheaded by Elon Musk, due to the urgent need to resume to aid programmes.
“These actions have generated a global humanitarian crisis by abruptly halting the crucial work of USAID employees, grantees, and contractors. They have cost thousands of American jobs. And they have imperilled US national security interests,” the lawsuit says.
Thousands of USAID workers expect to be put on administrative leave from Friday night. A message posted on the agency’s website says this will apply to all direct hire personnel from 23:59 EST (04:59 GMT).
On Wednesday, Rubio defended Trump’s moves against USAID, telling about 200 agency workers in Guatemala that the US does not plan to stop distributing aid to foreign countries. But he said that the programmes must align with US priorities.
“The United States is not walking away from foreign aid,” America’s top diplomat said. “It’s not.
“We’re going to continue to provide foreign aid and to be involved in programmes, but it has to be programmes that we can defend.”
“It has to be programmes that we can explain. It has to be programmes that we can justify. Otherwise, we do endanger foreign aid.”

Australia in Sri Lanka: Steve Smith and Alex Carey score centuries for Australia on dominant second day
Australia in Sri Lanka: Steve Smith and Alex Carey score centuries for Australia on dominant second day
Since a Boxing Day Test where they both starred, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have tracked in opposite directions.
Smith made another century — a second in this series, his fourth this summer and the 36th of his career — while another failure by Labuschagne has his Test spot hanging by a thread.
Their contrasting fortunes came as Australia raced past Sri Lanka’s first innings score on the second day of the second Test in Galle on Friday.
Alex Carey posted his second Test century midway through the final session and helped the visitors to 3-330 at stumps, 73 ahead of Sri Lanka. Smith finished on 120 and Carey 139 off just 156 ******.
Australia were 3-91 and the match was in the balance before their monster 239-run partnership.
Labuschagne was stuck on the outside of Australia’s run fest looking in. The No.3 was dismissed for just four when left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya got a ball to skid on with the arm and cannon into his pads.
He was given not out by the standing umpire but technology showed the ball tracking halfway up the leg stump.
Camera IconMarnus Labuschagne failed again. Credit: Robert Cianflone/Getty Images
Reports of a raging turner have been greatly exaggerated and except for a ******* in the first session of the first day, the slow bowlers have struggled to elicit any significant spin.
Labuschagne’s dismissal came after Travis Head started the innings with a rapid-fire 21 that featured three boundaries.
Nishan Peiris — backed in for this Test ahead of leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay — took his first wicket of the series when Head skipped down the pitch and edged a ball to slip.
Peiris has 2-70 off 21 overs in a much-improved performance after a ********** one last week where he finished with 0-189 and was dismissed for five and 0.
Usman Khawaja, the double-century hero of Australia’s only innings in the first match, was out for 36 — and also fell to Peiris — when he fell away trying to pull a ball that kept low into the on-side.
West *********** Josh Inglis spent time off the field battling back spasms during the first day and as Australia went about taking the final Sri Lankan wicket on Friday.
Camera IconSri Lanka had another long day in the field. Credit: Robert Cianflone/Getty Images
It took Australia almost half-an-hour to take the final wicket of No.11 Lahiru Kumara and that meant Inglis was forced to slide down the order.
Kusal Mendis finished unbeaten on 85, which passed Dinesh Chandimal’s 74 as Sri Lanka’s top score.
Batting as high as he had since he filled in as an opener for David Warner on his debut, Carey was elevated to No.5 and used a flat wicket and a flat Sri Lankan attack to put the heat back on the hosts.
Moments after Smith planted Jayasuriya for a six over his head, Carey slog-swept Ramesh Mendis over cow corner on 23.
Smith was given out by controversial umpire Joel Wilson and successfully reviewed the lbw call, while he edged a ball that fell just short of slip.
His half-century came off 98 ****** and was marked by a business-like bat raise.
And his hundred came with a leg-side heave off a Kamindu Mendis half-tracker. He raised his bat and his baggy green and nodded at the pavilion.
His run of four hundreds have come in just five Tests, the run of form beginning with his ton in Brisbane against India.
Camera IconSteve Smith celebrates after scoring a century. Credit: Robert Cianflone/Getty Images
He is five centuries away from Ricky Ponting’s *********** century record, but he broke a second of the Tasmanian’s records in as many days on Friday.
Just 27 runs into his knock, Smith overtook Ponting to become Australia’s top Test run-scorer in Asia.
Only one day after eclipsing Ponting with the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeping ***********, Smith brought up another milestone in Galle.
Ponting’s tally came from 48 innings at 41.97, while Smith reached him in his 42nd innings, with his average 51.08.
The biggest threat posed by the bowlers was skid rather than spin and it left Aussie batters uncertain on the back foot. Khawaja was out on the back foot, Smith was going back to defend when Wilson gave him out lbw and Labuschagne was caught on the crease.
Camera IconAlex Carey of Australia celebrates after scoring a century. Credit: Robert Cianflone/Getty Images
Like they did in the first Test, Sri Lanka’s spinners — led by Jayasuriya — turned to damage control and negative bowling where they pitched ****** outside leg to Smith, who they just can’t stop in this series.
The pair feasted after tea, leaving the unlucky Inglis with pad rash for the second time in as many innings and the struggling Labuschagne to watch from afar.
Labuschagne has made more than 20 just three times since the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India and the success of Inglis on debut and teen sensation Sam Konstas on their debuts leave his career at risk.
Test batting great Simon Katich worried the pressure on Labuschagne’s place in the team meant he wasn’t making clear decisions at the crease.
“In terms of where his games it, there is just this little bit of indecision and it was evident in his dismissal. That was a ball that he had to get forward to, with a new ball, the ball is likely to be skidding back into the stumps. He pressed forward and then he tried to play off the back foot and he was in no-man’s-land,” he told SEN.
“You just wonder if this is all playing out in Marnus’ mind — and only he knows that — and that’s going to be the challenge for him, because it is really the first time he has really been challenged for his spot in this team throughout his career.”
Carey’s batting resurgence — which began 12 months ago on Australia’s tour of New Zealand — came with questions swirling around his future.
But he averages 50.42 this summer and has held Inglis away from the wicketkeeping spot he has held for four years.
His century came off just 118 ****** and included nine boundaries and a six.

Citi downgrades Nike to neutral after disappointing meeting with CEO
Citi downgrades Nike to neutral after disappointing meeting with CEO
A new CEO at the helm hasn’t convinced Citi that Nike can successfully pull off a comeback. Analyst Paul Lejuez downgraded shares of the athletic footwear and apparel retailer to a neutral rating from buy, simultaneously slashing his price target to $72 from $102. This updated forecast is fractionally higher than Nike’s Thursday closing price of $71.74. Shares of Nike have tumbled 31% in the last 12 months. NKE 1Y mountain NKE 1Y chart Citi’s decision followed a sell-side event to meet new Nike CEO Elliott Hill, on whom analysts have pinned hopes of a long turnaround for the brand . But Lejeuz came away from the meeting feeling less reassured. “After discussing the key building blocks and challenges to achieve a turnaround, we no longer believe F26 will inflect the way we hoped, either on the sales or EBIT margin line. Topline pressures seem likely to continue as they manage down key franchises further in F26, without enough new product at scale to fill the void,” the analyst wrote. “We believe F26 consensus ests are too high, making the turnaround timing much less visible, and we no longer have the patience or conviction to wait another year.” Besides continuing sales pressures, Lejuez also highlighted margin headwinds resulting from taking product off the marketplace and from newer products as another obstacle for the company. Albeit short term, these pressures will likely persist beyond fiscal year 2025, resulting in another down margin year in 2026. Meanwhile, a U.S.-China tariff war could mean market share loss amongst ******** customers, while Nike’s attempts to offload current product through off-price deals could hurt the demand of new full-price launches. Lejuez also pointed to smaller competitors such as Hoka, On and Birkenstock as another emerging threat. “Smaller brands like Hoka, On, Birkenstock all have significant momentum, and are looking to expand into products that will compete with NKE in some way; NKE may have a hard time disrupting the momentum, making it difficult to gain back shelf space with wholesale partners,” he wrote.

Trump holds back billions in funding despite court ruling, states tell judge
Trump holds back billions in funding despite court ruling, states tell judge
A federal judge on Thursday said he stood ready to enforce an order he issued blocking President Donald Trump’s administration from freezing federal grants, loans and other financial assistance after Democratic-led states said billions of dollars in funding was still being tied up.
U.S. District Judge John McConnell in Providence, Rhode Island, during a virtual court hearing, said state agencies had a “rightful concern” that they were still not able to fully access money nearly a week after he issued his temporary restraining order.
He issued that January 31 order at the behest of Democratic attorneys generals from 22 states and the District of Columbia, determining it was necessary even after the White House’s Office of Management and Budget rescinded its wide-ranging directive that had announced the funding freeze.
McConnell said the order was necessary because of evidence the policy had remained in effect despite OMB’s rescission, which he said was in “name-only” and possibly done to frustrate a legal challenge.
More: President Trump’s stunning start: Reshape the government, remake the world
President Donald Trump looks on, as he attends the annual National Prayer Breakfast at Hilton hotel in Washington, U.S., February 6, 2025.
A lawyer with Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office told McConnell on Thursday that even after his ruling, state agencies were still having difficulty accessing federal funds they were entitled to.
“We’ve had communications from the defendants indicating that they believe there are certain funds not subject to the TRO, including the billions of dollars of infrastructure legislation and the Inflation Reduction Act,” Rabia Muqaddam, a lawyer with James’ office, said on behalf of the other states.
She said she believed the temporary restraining order McConnell issued on January 31 was “very clear” that no funding should be paused, yet state agencies “haven’t been able to access that money and are being told that funds are frozen.”
More: Judge extends pause on Trump funding freeze after finding administration has not complied
McConnell, an appointee of Democratic former President Barack Obama, said he too believed his order was “clear” and that he stood ready to “enforce the plain language of the order.”
“If you do want me to act on that concern – rightful concern I understand on behalf of your clients − then get something before me and we will figure out how to deal with it quickly,” he said.
He tentatively scheduled a February 21 hearing on whether he should issue a longer preliminary injunction.
The White House had no immediate comment.
In a court filing in a related case on Wednesday, the U.S. Justice Department said some federal agencies were still working to begin disbursing “appropriate” funding but was not aware of any ongoing implementation of the OMB memo’s directives.
In a Thursday letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, four Democratic lawmakers including U.S. Senator Jeffrey Merkley expressed outrage over what they said was a continued freeze in funding from the environmental agency. The EPA immediately did not respond to a request for comment.

Microplastics Found in Human Brain Tissue, Study Shows Rising Levels
Microplastics Found in Human Brain Tissue, Study Shows Rising Levels
Tiny plastic particles have been found in human brain tissue, raising concerns over their impact on health. Scientists have detected a significant increase in microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the brain over the past decades. The particles, commonly present in air, water, and food, have now been identified within human tissue, challenging previous assumptions about the brain’s protective barriers. Researchers are working to understand the long-term consequences of this plastic infiltration.
Rising Plastic Levels in Brain Tissue
According to the study published in Nature Medicine, 91 brain samples collected from individuals who died between 1997 and 2024 were analysed. Reports indicate a 50 percent increase in MNP concentrations from 2016 to 2024, with median levels rising from 3,345 micrograms per gram to 4,917 micrograms per gram. Andrew West, a neuroscientist at Duke University, told Science News that the sheer quantity of plastic detected was unexpected, stating that he didn’t believe it until he saw all the data.
Unexpected Particle Shapes and Sources
Findings suggest that the plastic particles are not uniform. Many were thin, sharp fragments rather than the engineered beads often studied in labs. Richard Thompson, a microplastic pollution expert at the University of Plymouth, told Science News that these plastics originate from everyday products such as grocery bags and bottles. Polystyrene, frequently used in medical and food industries, was found in lower amounts compared to polyethylene.
Potential Links to Neurological Conditions
Higher MNP levels were found in the brains of 12 individuals diagnosed with dementia, but researchers have not confirmed a direct causal link. Some scientists speculate that neurological changes associated with dementia may increase plastic accumulation. Phoebe Stapleton, a toxicologist at Rutgers University, told Nature Medicine that further research is required to understand the biological impact, stating, that the next steps will be to understand what they are doing in the brain and how the body responds to them.

Where to Sleep in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2—How To Get a Free Bed
Where to Sleep in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2—How To Get a Free Bed
A bed may seem trivial in the grand scheme of things in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, but sleep helps Henry in numerous ways. One of the first things you must do in KC2 is find a bed, so let’s show you how.
I didn’t play the first Kingdom Come game, so I felt at a disadvantage when I set foot in the Kingdom of Bohemia for the first time. The combat is tough, and you must embrace realism as hydration, hunger, and sleep deprivation will hit you. The latter is the focus of this guide though as Henry needs to sleep in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2—which means he needs a bed.
You can feasible spend a few hours in KC2 without finding a bed of your own. Owning a bed won’t be an issue if you follow this walkthrough.
How to Get a Bed in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
A free save is the best. Image by Insider Gaming
The quickest and fastest way to get a bed to sleep in during Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is to find Radovan or Kreyzl early on in Troskowitz—they’re enjoying a beer next to the town’s Tavern—and seek them out and complete their Quest.
I did this and went to see Blacksmith Radovan in Tachov. I completed his Smithing tutorial, and after making the finest weapon you’ve ever seen, Radovan generously gifted me a bed, storage chest, and free goodies.
Check out these simple instructions to get you started in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2:
Start a game of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
Play through until you finish the final introductory Quest—Laboratores.
You now have access to the whole game, unencumbered or hindered.
Head to Tachov—Northwest of Troskowitz—and find the town’s Smithing setup.
Speak to Radovan and initiate his questline.
Complete the Smithing tutorial.
Once it’s all done, a room in the attached building is now yours.
You can tell which bed is yours as it gives you an option to save.
This is now considered “My Bed,” and any time I need somewhere to put my head down for a few hours, I can come back here.
Warning: Don’t make the same mistake I did (and have done repeatedly) of sleeping in someone else’s bed.
This is considered Trespassing; it’s a crime, and you face punishment for your actions. Again, as the screenshot shows above, it needs to say “Sleep and save,” for you to have a peaceful, uninterrupted, and felon-free snooze.
What Does Sleeping do in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2?
Sleeping helps Henry to recover health and reduces fatigue, but it also increases hunger in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
If your max HP recovery has been capped due to conflict, sleep heals you. If Henry is drowsy and it’s affecting him, you need sleep. Be warned that if you sleep too much, the benefits eventually stop, and all you do is end up making Henry hungry because he’s gone so many hours without eating.
This means your food is also likely to spoil faster, and you might end up with food poisoning if you’re not careful.
How relieved were you when you got your first bed in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2? It’s a lifesaver, right? Let us know other places you managed to find a secure way of sleeping.
We have many other KC2 guides to check out including how to use a Torch and how to claim Twitch Drops rewards for KC2.

*** officials are reportedly demanding ********* access to Apple iCloud accounts
*** officials are reportedly demanding ********* access to Apple iCloud accounts
*** officials have ordered Apple to create a ********* that would allow them to see what users worldwide have saved on their iCloud accounts, according to The Washington Post. Their order reportedly demands blanket capability to view all of a user’s fully encrypted material whenever they want, wherever the target is located.
While only certain iCloud data is end-to-end encrypted by default, users can choose to activate Advanced Data Protection for better security. With the optional setting enabled, the majority of a user’s data is protected by encryption, including their iCloud Backup, Photos and Notes. Except encryption won’t do users any good if authorities in the *** decide to take a look at their iCloud content.
Apple will likely stop offering encrypted storage to users in the ***, The Post’s sources said, so it wouldn’t have to promise them greater security knowing that authorities will be able to access their account. As the publication notes, though, it doesn’t solve the issue of authorities demanding a ********* entrance for all accounts, even for users outside the region.
Authorities issued the order under the *** Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, which covers how they can get their hands on data and information for law enforcement purposes. When the *** government made changes to the Act last year, it said they were meant to “ensure the intelligence services and law enforcement have the powers they need to keep pace with a range of evolving threats from terrorists, hostile state actors, child abusers and criminal gangs.” The company won’t be able to confirm receiving the order, because it would be a criminal offense to do so. But it if did indeed get one, then Google, which has more users around the world, might also receive one soon if it hasn’t gotten one yet.
Apple received a draft of the order when those changes were being debated by government officials last year. In a written submission protesting them, it said that the planned provisions “could be used to force a company like Apple, that would never build a back door into its products, to publicly withdraw critical security features from the *** market.” The Post says the company can still appeal the notice, but it can’t use that appeal to put off its compliance.

Norwegian company abandons plans for $2.5 billion battery plant, 700 jobs in metro Atlanta
Norwegian company abandons plans for $2.5 billion battery plant, 700 jobs in metro Atlanta
Plans that have been in the works for years to build a multi-billion battery plant in Coweta County have been scrapped.
Norwegian-based company Freyr addressed the Coweta County Development Authority on Thursday announce the cancellation of their plans.

The $2.57 billion battery manufacturing plant was first announced in Nov. 2022 and was slated to bring approximately 723 jobs into the area. The facility was set to be called Giga America and be located at the Bridgeport Industrial Park site.
Freyr previously said it would produce lithium-ion batteries at the plant and help address the rapidly growing global markets for electric vehicles, energy storage and marine applications.
TRENDING STORIES:
The company didn’t offer any reasoning for abandoning their plans, but a spokesperson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they are “focusing at the moment on the solar module manufacturing facility in Texas.”
Company spokespeople had nothing but good things to say about working alongside Coweta County and the State of Georgia
“This decision in no way reflects any concern with the support from our State of Georgia and local partners, each of whom have provided stellar support and guidance. Georgia is a great state to do business,” a company spokesperson said in a letter to Coweta County Development Authority Executive Director Sarah Jacobs.

Sales of Tesla‘s cars to China fell in January, as competition from domestic rivals continued to heat up.
Tesla sold 63,238 units of its electric cars in January, down 11.5% from the 71,447 cars sold in the same month last year.
Shares of Tesla were down about 1.5% in premarket trading.
******** rival BYD meanwhile sold 296,446 pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles last month, up 47% year-on-year.
Other ******** rivals of Tesla, including Changan Automobile and Xpeng, also posted growth in sales.
Tesla has attempted to use price cuts as an incentive to retain ********’ buyers interest in its car. Late last year, Tesla slashed the price of its Model Y car and also extended a zero-interest five-year loan plan until the end of January.
Last month, the U.S. giant also announced a revamped version of the Model Y — one of its best-selling EV autos — in China. This also came with a 0% interest plan.
Tesla has not introduced a new model since it began delivering the Cybertruck in late 2023, which starts at nearly $80,000. Investors have been yearning for a new mass-market model from the company to reinvigorate sales.
Tesla has said a new affordable model could be launched in the first half of 2025.
Meanwhile, the automaker is pushing to launch its driver assist system, which it markets as “Full Self Driving,” in China this year, as rivals also roll out similar features.

AACTA Awards 2025 winners list: Better Man and Boy Swallows Universe clean up
AACTA Awards 2025 winners list: Better Man and Boy Swallows Universe clean up
Robbie Williams biopic Better Man and Netflix miniseries Boy Swallows Universe were the big winners of the AACTA Awards, which recognises excellence in *********** film and TV production.
Boy Swallows Universe, adapted from Trent Dalton’s best-selling novel, claimed 12 AACTAs across two ceremonies – the main gala tonight and the industry event on Wednesday – including gongs in the miniseries, acting, screenplay, directing and other technical categories.
The show swept all four drama performance categories, including a win for the series’ breakout star, teenager Felix Cameron, won the lead actor in a drama. Phoebe Tonkin, Deborah Mailman and Lee Tiger Halley also won for their roles.
On the film side, Better Man picked up nine awards including film, directing and acting gongs for Jonno Davies and Damon Herriman.
Better Man’s victory will be welcome relief for its filmmakers and producers after a bruising run at the box office where the film severely underperformed compared to its significant budget.
Williams was present at the ceremony and took to the stage to perform his pop anthem, “Angels”.
The lead actress and supporting actress awards went to Sarah Snook and Jacki Weaver, both for Memoir of a Snail, which will also compete at the Oscars in the animated feature category.

The victories for Davies, Snook and Weaver were unusual in that all three were not onscreen performances. Davies provided the voice and motion-capture performance in Better Man, which portrayed Williams as a CGI chimpanzee. Snook and Weaver were voice performances.
Non-onscreen roles became eligible for AACTA acting gongs for the first time this year.
Special awards were given to Working Dog, Paul Kelly, actor Kartanya Maynard, cinematographer Greig Fraser and unscripted series Unspoiled.
The ceremony was held at HOTA on the Gold Coast. Russell Crowe, the president of AACTA, was the host.

Wall Street analysts say buy the dip in Amazon, see upside ahead because of AI
Wall Street analysts say buy the dip in Amazon, see upside ahead because of AI
Analysts across Wall Street remained bullish on Amazon despite it’s somewhat disappointing earnings report with major firms calling for upside ahead because of its underappreciated moves in artificial intelligence. On Thursday night, the e-commerce giant and “Magnificent Seven” member posted a fourth-quarter earnings and revenue beat . Amazon reported earnings of $1.86 per share on revenue of $187.79 billion, surpassing the $1.49 on $187.30 billion in revenue analysts polled by LSEG had expected. On the other hand, the company gave disappointing guidance for its current *******, citing “unfavorable” headwinds from foreign exchange rates. Amazon expects sales this quarter to come in between $151 billion to $155.5 billion, below the $158.5 billion average consensus. Shares of Amazon have soared 40% in the past 12 months. The stock was set to open Friday’s trading session nearly 3% lower. AMZN 1Y mountain AMZN 1Y chart Across Wall Street, analysts ultimately emphasized their optimism towards Amazon’s future, although the company’s disappointing guidance resulted in several price target revisions, both upwards and downwards. Wall Street’s price target forecasts for Amazon now imply potential upside ahead ranging from between 7% to 17%. Here’s what specific investment firms had to say about Amazon’s latest earnings report: Goldman Sachs Analyst Eric Sheridan reiterated his overweight rating and raised his price target to $255 from $240, implying potential upside of 7%. “We come away from this earnings report with an increased confidence interval in our medium/long term thesis around Amazon’s key platform drivers (in terms of both revenue compounding and margin trajectory),” Sheridan wrote. Bank of America Analyst Justin Post reiterated his buy rating and raised his price target to $257 from $255, implying potential upside of 8%. “Amazon’s retail business continues to show strong margin improvement with a lower cost to serve, while we continue to see AWS as the best positioned AI service in our coverage group,” Post wrote. Barclays Analyst Ross Sandler reiterated his overweight rating and raised his price target to $265 from $235, implying potential upside of 11%. “The margin pull through is allowing AMZN’s FCF to grow nicely in 2025, standing out from the rest of mega-cap,” Sandler wrote. Evercore ISI Analyst Mark Mahaney reiterated his outperform rating and raised his price target to $270 from $260, implying potential upside of 13%. “AMZN remains one of our top longs … we still see several new growth levers/stock drivers,” Mahaney wrote. JPMorgan Analyst Doug Anmuth reiterated his overweight rating but lowered his price target to $270 from $280, implying potential upside of 13%. “We’re comfortable with AMZN’s 2025 capex outlook of ~$105B given AMZN’s very clear path to AI monetization through AWS & what AMZN frames as the biggest tech shift since the Internet … AMZN remains our best idea,” Anmuth wrote. Citi Analyst Ronald Josey reiterated his buy rating but lowered his price target to $273 from $275, implying potential upside of 14%. “Amazon remains a top-pick on retail strength, AWS GenAI demand, and expanding margins and we’d take advantage of any dislocation in shares,” Josey wrote. Bernstein Analyst Mark Shmulik reiterated his outperform rating but lowered his price target to $275 from $280, implying potential upside of 15%. “A $100B+ 2025 CAPEX guide is also a massive number, and the law of large numbers means that growth rates in advertising and AWS are tougher to come by, while missing a single day like leap year creates a $1.5B sales hole to fill on its own,” Shmulik wrote. Morgan Stanley Analyst Brian Nowak reiterated his overweight rating and price target of $280, implying potential upside of 17%. “We now turn to AMZN, which, in our view, is still the most under-appreciated GenAI winner of our mega-caps,” Nowak wrote. — CNBC’s Michael Bloom contributed to this report.
