GTA Parent Company Boss Discusses AI And How “Machines Don’t Learn” GTA Parent Company Boss Discusses AI And How “Machines Don’t Learn” Artificial intelligence continues to be a major talking point in the world of video games and beyond, and now the top boss at GTA parent company Take-Two has chimed in with his thoughts. Strauss Zelnick said in an interview that artificial intelligence will be embraced as a digital tool to assist humans and that employment numbers will go up long-term as a result. “Artificial intelligence is an oxymoron; there’s no such thing. Machine learning… machines don’t learn,” he told GI.biz. “Those are convenient ways to explain to human beings what looks like magic. The bottom line is that these are digital tools and we’ve used digital tools forever.” He added: “I have no doubt that what is considered AI today will help make our business more efficient and help us do better work, but it won’t reduce employment.” Zelnick went on to say that history has shown time and again that the arrival of new digital technologies ultimately leads to further job creation, increased productivity, and increased GPD overall. “I think that’s what’s going to happen with AI. I think the video game business will probably be on the leading, if not bleeding, edge of using AI,” he said. Others in the video game space, like EA CEO Andrew Wilson and Microsoft’s Brad Smith, have admitted that advancements to AI will lead to job losses in the short term while increasing employment rates on a longer-term timeline. Before this, Zelnick said people are overstating the power and abilities of AI technologies. “It’s not going to allow someone to say, ‘Please develop the competitor to Grand Theft Auto that’s better than Grand Theft Auto’, and then they just send it out and ship it digitally and that will be that. People will try, but that won’t happen,” Zelnick said. The executive went on to say that AI technologies may be similar to a hand calculator. Decades ago, parents worried that hand calculators would mean children wouldn’t need to learn math, but that wasn’t the case. “The answer is yes, you still have to learn math, turns out, you absolutely have to learn math, but you have a tool that makes it easier to do. And ChatGPT is the same thing,” he said. Also in the interview, Zelnick said Take-Two’s efforts in the AI space will not infringe on other people’s intellectual properties, as some have been accused of already. OpenAI, for example, is being sued by The New York Times over claims that the AI company used its data to train its large language model. “So of course, we’re mindful of what technology we use to make sure that it respects others’ intellectual property and allows us to protect our own,” he said. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer believes AI will be a positive, additive force in gaming. PUBG creator Brendan Greene’s new game, meanwhile, is using advanced machine-learning to create massive and realistic open worlds. Video game voice actors remain on strike over concerns around AI, among other things. One of the more prominent voice actors, Jennifer Hale, has discussed why she believes AI is an “existential” threat. Lucky loser’s fortune runs out against ruthless ****** Lucky loser’s fortune runs out against ruthless ****** Alex de Minaur has wasted no time in blasting into the semi-finals at the Rotterdam Open, ensuring that ‘lucky loser’ Daniel Altmaier’s run of good fortune was swiftly snuffed out. The ******* outsider, given an unexpected second chance through another player’s withdrawal even though he’d already himself been eliminated in the qualifying rounds, was this time unlucky to find the on-song *********** No.1 in ruthless mood in their quarter-final on Friday. It took the Sydneysider less than an hour and a half to dismantle the world No.93 in straight sets, 6-1 6-4, to proceed to the semi-final for the second-straight year in the indoor hardcourt tournament that’s proved a happy hunting ground for him. De Minaur is seeking to reach the final again after his defeat to Jannik Sinner in last year’s championship match. But he’s doubtless next face a rather harder task in Saturday’s semi-final against either Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Greek who owns an 11-1 winning record against him, or Italian Mattia Bellucci, who were meeting in the next quarter-final at the Rotterdam Ahoy arena. De Minaur has been in sharp form all week in his first tournament since reaching the quarter-finals of his home grand slam at the *********** Open, and has swept into the last four without dropping a set. Indeed, he has only had his serve broken once all tournament, with Altmaier summoning up some laudable resistance in the second set to crack the world No.8’s delivery. But de Minaur, with his inside-out forehand working sweetly and proving effective with his regular forays to the net, hit back immediately for a fourth break of serve at 4-4 that effectively sealed the *******’s fate. He grabbed the break with a fabulous point that ended with de Minaur powering a smash towards Altmaier’s body, leaving the ******* to end up tossing his racquet away in despair after wondering what more he had to do to penetrate the Aussie’s superb defences. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 review – it’s a hard-knock life in medieval Bohemia | Games Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 review – it’s a hard-knock life in medieval Bohemia | Games Life was tough in 16th-century Bohemia, and so it is here, in its virtual counterpart. The first 10 hours of this game were thoroughly **********. Stepping into the mud-soaked boots of Henry, a humble blacksmith-turned-knight, I am sent to deliver a message across a war-ravaged region. Yet before Henry can fulfil his duty, he falls victim to a deadly ambush, leaving himself and his Lord, Hans Capon, stranded without a penny or sword to their name. As a stranger arriving in tattered rags, bloodsoaked and desperate, no one believes that you are a nobleman, or has the time to listen to your increasingly urgent pleas. Townsfolk comment on your odour and refuse to let you into various establishments. It’s a truly humbling gaming experience, creating a soberingly bleak recreation of what it’s like to be among medieval society’s downtrodden. The main story eventually whisks you away on increasingly impressive exploits, but in the early game, merely surviving the day is an adventure in itself. In this harsh feudal fantasy, you can save your progress only two ways: sleeping in your own bed, or drinking a bottle of saviour schnapps. When you can’t afford a night at an inn – and Henry doesn’t even have a horse – each new map-spanning journey is risky. Some of those early deaths cost me hours of progress. Arduous … Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Photograph: Warhorse Studios/Deep Silver Once you manage to work – and thieve – your way into a few Groschen, your fortunes begin to change. Keeping up appearances is imperative in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, with your clothes and hygiene influencing your charisma stat, feeding into your wider reputation. Townsfolk notice your wounds and blood-splattered clothes. Innkeepers are less likely to take you for a thieving vagabond if you’ve bathed. The wealthier you become, the easier life becomes; dressing well even helps to convince guards of your innocence when you’re caught red-handed. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is filled with the kind of friction that most modern games actively avoid. I became utterly immersed in this brutally believable simulation – even when it was kicking my *****. This is a role-playing game where even the simple act of making a potion is a struggle, where food can rot and poison you, and not even fast travel is safe. Word to the wise – don’t accidentally clamber into the wrong bed. It’ll end in a night spent being pelted in the stocks. Like in Bethesda’s Skyrim, you learn by doing. Want to get better at running? Sprint while wearing the heaviest armour you can find. Fancy commanding conversations? Devote half an in-game day to reading a book. The original game’s first-person duelling makes a welcome return, locking players into a lethal game of bluffing, blocking and reading your opponent’s stance. It’s a deadly dance that feels like nothing else in games, but if swordplay isn’t for you, you can hone your marksmanship, double down on stealth or even opt to make your tongue your sharpest weapon. In conversations, you can roleplay Henry as you see fit, leaning into intimidation, intellect, charm or outright violence. However you play, the writing is consistently compelling, the characters as unyieldingly consistent as the gameplay. Despite the misery baked into it, Kingdom Come 2 has a comedic spirit. From a demented miller who has you collecting sediment from corpses, to settling your differences with soldiers via raucous drinking games, there’s humour in even the most inane of interactions. Developer Warhorse Studios is wise to keep players smiling, even while they’re cursing the game under their breath. Comedic spirit … Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Photograph: Warhorse Studios/Deep Silver Watching Henry slowly transform from an inept nobody into a fearsome presence feels immensely rewarding, and once you’ve pulled yourself up by your bootstraps, this country-spanning jaunt sees you infiltrate noble weddings, plan a prison break and even defend a besieged castle. While Kingdom Come 2’s world inevitably features the kind of bugs you’d expect from a sprawling RPG, it helps that it is a very handsome game. The grass sways in the wind and villages and towns teem with life. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Pushing Buttons Keza MacDonald’s weekly look at the world of gaming Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. The early hours feel like the playable equivalent of being sent to military school, and demand saintly patience – but it’s an investment that pays off. Much like in Red Dead Redemption 2 before it, I happily lose hours wandering around this vast simulation, curious to see what wonder and depravity I might stumble on. It’s telling that despite spending more than 115 hours in Bohemia, I have yet to roll credits on the main quest line. If you’re uninspired by the prospect of roaming yet another frictionless open world where everything comes easy, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a breath of fresh air – scented with just a hint of dung. Scout leader jailed for decades-long abuse of boys Scout leader jailed for decades-long abuse of boys A former cub scout leader dubbed a “paedophile hiding in plain sight” has been jailed for ********* assaulting boys as young as seven for almost 30 years. Ian Silvester, of Locks Hill in Portslade, East Sussex, had befriended his victims working as a babysitter, diving instructor, first aid trainer and St John Ambulance trainer. He had previously denied 83 charges of historical ******* abuse in Hove and Worthing, but was found guilty of 79 of those charges following a trial at Lewes Crown Court in November. Silvester, 60, was sentenced to 16 years in prison with an additional six years on licence at the same court on Friday. Sentencing Silvester, Judge Christine Laing KC said: “You are the very definition of a paedophile hiding in plain sight.” The judge said the defendant had given his victims a “lifetime of shame and regret”, telling the court the abuse happened so “openly and plainly and so often in front of others”. She added: “The fact is, you were in a position of trust with each boy. “Either as their babysitter, their cub scout master, their diving coach, a provider of first aid training, claiming to meet them to practice to be victims, and your behaviour was a gross abuse of that trust.” An impact statement read out in court from one man who was abused by Silvester said: “You are a monster who picked the most vulnerable in society.” On devices seized from Silvester’s home were images and videos of his victims being assaulted by him as well as indecent images of children, online chat logs and web searches of ******* interest in young boys. Silvester was found guilty of 44 counts of indecent assault on a male, 25 counts of ******* activity with a child, four counts of ******* assault, two counts of inciting a child to engage in ******* activity, two counts of ******* assault of a child under 13 and two counts of making indecent photos of children. The offences, including assaulting 19 boys, took place between 1986 and 2013. Sussex Police investigator Nicky Beard said: “Ian Silvester abused the trust placed in him by his victims and their parents in the most appalling ways. “He was relentless in seeking and creating roles which allowed him continued access to boys and young men, many of whom were vulnerable, and he would ruthlessly abuse them for his own ******* gratification.” A spokesperson for the Scouts Association said Silvester would “never again be allowed to volunteer with the Scout Movement”. It added: “There is no place in the organisation for anyone who behaves in this way.” Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram. US jobs growth slows in January US jobs growth slows in January US jobs growth slowed in January, according to the latest official figures, but the rate of unemployment declined. Employers created 143,000 jobs last month, compared with analyst’s forecasts of about 170,000. However, December’s jobs figure was revised up to 307,000. A resilient jobs market underpinning economic expansion has given the US Federal Reserve space to pause interest rate cuts while policymakers assess the impact of Donald Trump’s fiscal, trade and immigration policies, which some economists view as inflationary. The unemployment rate dipped to 4% in January from 4.1% the month before. Although there were widespread wildfires in southern California last month, and there was severe winter weather in much of the rest of the US, this did not affect employment, hours and earnings, or the unemployment rate, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said. NYT Connections: hints and answers for Friday, February 7 NYT Connections: hints and answers for Friday, February 7 Table of Contents Table of Contents How to play Connections Hints for today’s Connections Today’s Connections answers NYT Connection FAQs Connections is one of the best puzzle games from the New York Times. The game tasks you with categorizing a pool of 16 words into four secret (for now) groups by figuring out how the words relate to each other. The puzzle resets every night at midnight and each new puzzle has a varying degree of difficulty. Just like Wordle, you can keep track of your winning streak and compare your scores with friends. Some days are trickier than others — just like other NYT Games favorites The Mini and Strands. If you’re having a little trouble solving today’s puzzle, check out our Connections tips and tricks guide for some good strategies or check out the hints for today’s Connections puzzle below. And if you still can’t get it, we’ll tell you today’s answers at the very end. How to play Connections Connections is a daily game about finding common threads between words. Players must select four groups of four words without making more than three mistakes. Play now. pic.twitter.com/CqObVOqeUs — The New York Times (@nytimes) November 3, 2024 Please enable Javascript to view this content You can play Connections on the New York Times website or with the NYT Games app on iOS or Android. In Connections, you’ll be shown a grid containing 16 words — your objective is to organize these words into four sets of four by identifying the connections that link them. These sets could encompass concepts like titles of video game franchises, book series sequels, shades of red, names of chain restaurants, etc. There are generally words that seem like they could fit multiple themes, but there’s only one 100% correct answer. You’re able to shuffle the grid of words and rearrange them to help better see the potential connections. Each group is color-coded. The yellow group is the easiest to figure out, followed by the green, blue, and purple groups. Pick four words and hit Submit. If you’re correct, the four words will be removed from the grid and the theme connecting them will be revealed. Guess incorrectly and it’ll count as a mistake. You only have four mistakes available until the game ends. Hints for today’s Connections We can help you solve today’s Connection by telling you the four themes. If you need more assistance, we’ll also give you one word from each group below. Today’s themes BE IN CHARGE OF THINGS MADE OF RUBBER ASSOCIATED WITH THE GENIE IN “ALADDIN” RED __ One-answer reveals BE IN CHARGE OF – DIRECT THINGS MADE OF RUBBER – BALLOON ASSOCIATED WITH THE GENIE IN “ALADDIN” – BLUE RED __ – BULL New York Times Today’s Connections answers Still no luck? Most of my puzzle experience has been working with crosswords, and I was excited at the chance to try something different. I’ve enjoyed learning how puzzle editing plays out once a game is greenlighted, and seeing how our team fits into a larger ecosystem.” On the one-year anniversary of Connections launching earlier this year, Liu posted this TikTok about her favorite puzzles so far: Source link #NYT #Connections #hints #answers #Friday #February Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
Football Manager 25 video game cancelled after series of delays | Football Football Manager 25 video game cancelled after series of delays | Football The makers of Football Manager have cancelled the 2025 release of the game after a series of delays. Sports Interactive (SI) announced that FM25 had been scrapped, with the game’s makers turning their attention to future games, with the next release usually due in November. SI, which is owned by the gaming company *****, apologised to fans after making the “difficult decision” to cancel the game after a number of technical hitches. “We know this will come as a huge disappointment, especially given that the release date has already moved twice, and [fans] have been eagerly anticipating the first gameplay reveal,” a statement said. The game’s makers said they had planned to “create the biggest technical and visual advancement in the series for a generation” but that had proven impossible. They said: “While many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be. We could have pressed on, released FM25 in its current state, and fixed things down the line – but that’s not the right thing to do. We were also unwilling to go beyond a March release as it would be too late in the football season to expect players to then buy another game later in the year.” skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Pushing Buttons Keza MacDonald’s weekly look at the world of gaming Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. A focused flagship that ignores the AI hype A focused flagship that ignores the AI hype OnePlus has been a bit up and down since it merged with Oppo back in 2021. It gained greater access to powerful components and partnerships with brands like Hasselblad, while its software and product lineup took a few steps back before finding its stride again. But now, three generations after the merger, OnePlus’ latest flagship phone — the OnePlus 13 — feels like a fantastic return to form. In some areas, the company is even pushing the limits of hardware and gadget design in ways that rivals from Samsung and Google aren’t. And with a starting price of $900, OnePlus has managed to undercut its closest competitor too, which makes this phone a great choice for anyone who cares more about getting hardware upgrades than fancy new AI tricks. Engadget Instead of focusing on AI, the OnePlus 13 packs a bunch of top-of-the-line components into an attractive chassis for a very reasonable starting price of $900. Pros Class-leading battery life Super-bright display Great performance Attractive design Cons Photo quality could be a touch better Only six years of software support instead of seven Needs a case to fully support magnetic Qi2 accessories $900 at OnePlus Design and display: Peak brightness and style In a time when Apple, Google and Samsung’s top phones all sport minor twists on practically the same formula, I love that OnePlus is doing its own thing. Instead of a completely boxy design, the OP13 has tapered edges that curve gently to meet its metal frame. You still get the company’s signature Alert Slider which makes it a cinch to set your phone’s ringer to silent, vibrate or fully audible. But my favorite design feature is that if you opt for the Midnight Ocean or Artic Dawn colors, the phone comes with a micro-fiber vegan leather back. And in a world full of glass bricks, OnePlus’ organic upholstery is simply a joy to touch. This is the kind of handset I’d feel sad to throw in a case. Sam Rutherford for Engadget Meanwhile, the OP13’s 6.8-inch OLED panel dazzles thanks to bright, vivid colors and a silky 120Hz refresh rate. With a peak of up to 4,500 nits, it gets even brighter than other Android flagships including Samsung’s new Galaxy S25 Ultra (2,600 nits). The one aesthetic choice I’m still not sure about is the gigantic circular camera module on the back. Between its pearlescent finish and the four circles for its lenses and the flash/autofocus system, it almost looks like OnePlus smashed a chronograph watch into the rear of the phone. But maybe that’s just me. Performance and software: So much memory The OnePlus 13 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip along with 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. However, unlike the processors used in Samsung’s Galaxy S25 family, the chip in the OP13 doesn’t feature any additional customizations or overclocking. This leads to benchmark results that are about five percent lower (9,267 for the OP13 vs 9,828 for the Galaxy S25 Ultra in Geekbench 6 multi-core). In the real world, though, the phone still feels blisteringly fast. I’d even argue that due to the OP13’s greater amount of memory, it’s a better choice for multitaskers or anyone who likes keeping a bunch of apps open in the background. Furthermore, over the past few years, OnePlus has refined Oxygen OS so that it feels smoother and more responsive than it did when it became a fork of Oppo’s ColorOS back in 2022. Sam Rutherford for Engadget On the AI front, OnePlus is keeping things refreshingly lowkey. The phone supports Google Gemini and Circle to Search for all your summarizing and question-asking needs. There’s also an improved search feature inside the phone itself that makes it a bit easier to find specific files and a smarter Notes app that uses machine learning to polish up, elaborate or condense quick thoughts. But that’s about it aside from an AI-powered translation feature that arrived shortly after launch, which is generally competent but not especially novel or exciting. So while AI is definitely present, it isn’t nearly as big of a focus as it is on the Galaxy S25 family, which isn’t a bad thing. Cameras: Nearly top tier Sam Rutherford for Engadget The OnePlus 13 features a trio of 50-megapixel sensors for its main, ultra-wide and 3x telephoto lenses, plus a laser-detect autofocus system for increased sharpness. Altogether, it’s a solid package that can capture great-looking images at a variety of distances and viewing angles, with OnePlus adding things like its dual exposure Clear Burst tech to help make snapping fast-moving subjects a bit easier. In terms of image quality, the OP13 does a good job of splitting the difference between having rich, saturated colors and crisp details, but without exaggerating things like you often see on Samsung phones, which tend to oversharpen or push warm tones a bit too hard. OnePlus’ 3x optical zoom lens matches those on similarly priced rivals like the S25+, though it’s still short of the 5x lenses found on the Pixel 9 Pro and S25 Ultra. 1 / 7 Photo comparison between the OnePlus 13 and the Pixel 9 Pro Photo comparison between the OnePlus 13 and the Pixel 9 Pro One small issue is that in low light, the OP13’s Night Mode sometimes struggled to keep up with the Pixel 9’s Night Sight, resulting in photos that aren’t quite as sharp or detailed as you’d like them to be. It’s close, but to me, OnePlus’ cameras remain a half-tier below Samsung, Google and Apple when shooting pics in darker environments. Battery life and charging: Super fast, but it’s proprietary It feels like every high-end Android phone has been stuck with 5,000mAh batteries for the past half-decade. But for this go around, the OnePlus 13 has smashed past that barrier with a 6,000mAh cell, resulting in class-leading longevity. On our local video rundown test, it posted a time of 30 hours and 18 minutes, which is almost an hour longer than the Galaxy S25 Ultra (29:27) and nearly three hours better than a basic Pixel 9 (27:32). Sam Rutherford for Engadget Meanwhile when it comes to recharging, the OnePlus 13 leads the way too with wired speeds of up to 100 watts or an impressive 50 watts wirelessly. However, the major caveat is that because OnePlus relies on its proprietary SUPERVOOC tech, you’ll only get those blistering rates when using the company’s first-party peripherals. Thankfully, an 80-watt charger comes in the box, though if you want to hit max power, you’ll need to upgrade to OnePlus’ 100W Dual Port adapter. It’s a similar situation for wireless charging, which requires the company’s 50W AIRVOOC puck. That said, the OP13 recharges more than twice as fast as a Galaxy S25 when using a cable and more than three times quicker wirelessly. Plus, you can still use universal power adapters in a pinch, you’ll just have to live with greatly reduced wattages. Another small wrinkle is that though OnePlus says the 13 supports Qi2 charging, it doesn’t play nicely with magnetic third-party accessories without some help. In my testing, while the phone provides a weak magnetic connection, every Qi2 peripheral I tried slid off with the slightest movement. Like Samsung did with the Galaxy S25, OnePlus’ solution was to make a case with its own set of magnets that allows add-ons to attach with much greater security. Wrap-up Sam Rutherford for Engadget Throughout the years, OnePlus has used taglines like “flagship killer” and “ultra in every way” as a means of taking shots at its biggest rivals from Samsung, Google and more. But for the OnePlus 13, it feels like the company just went and made a really solid premium handset without a bunch of AI fluff. The phone has excellent performance, a massive battery and a gorgeous screen that can hang with the displays on any of its competitors. It also sports a unique design with some down-to-earth touches like its optional faux leather back. Granted, camera quality could be a touch better, especially in low light, and I really wish OnePlus had just included full magnetic Qi2 compatibility instead of forcing people to rely on a case. But hey, at least you get a superfast wired power adapter (which, unlike a lot of phones, comes in the box) and the option to use the company’s blazing charging puck if you want to go cable-free. Sam Rutherford for Engadget But most importantly, for a starting price of $900, you get longer battery life, a brighter screen, more RAM, greater storage and the same 3x zoom as a base Galaxy S25+ — all for $100 less. There’s no other way to put it, that’s just a good deal, even if OnePlus’ software support only lasts for six years instead of the seven you get from Samsung and Google. The OnePlus 13 is an example of how to keep things simple in an increasingly complex and AI-obsessed world while delivering on all the essentials. Wonder Woman Game Has Reportedly Already Cost WB Games $100 Million, Nowhere Close To Releasing Wonder Woman Game Has Reportedly Already Cost WB Games $100 Million, Nowhere Close To Releasing A new report on Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game has emerged, claiming that the project has undergone a reboot behind the scenes and has so far cost Warner Bros. over $100 million. It’s claimed that the Wonder Woman game is still years away from being released. “A video game based on Wonder Woman, has struggled to coalesce, according to people familiar with the project,” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier wrote. “Early last year, it was rebooted and switched directors. The game has already cost more than $100 million, said the people who asked not to be identified discussing nonpublic information, and is still years away from release, if it ever makes it to market.” You need a javascript enabled browser to watch videos. Warner Bros. executives reportedly weren’t interested in this proposal, and three years later, the project was canceled. The executives suggested that Monolith should instead work on one of the company’s franchises, and after the departure of studio head Kevin Stephens and several key creatives–who would go on to form a new studio at EA to work on a ****** Panther game–the rest of Monolith began development on the Wonder Woman game. Schrier’s report says that an early version of the game attempted to reimagine the Nemesis system from the Mordor games, allowing Wonder Woman to befriend her enemies. This idea was eventually scrapped “in favor of a more traditional action-adventure game” and the future of the project might be in jeopardy. Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2021, but since then, the studio has kept quiet on development aside from confirmation that it will not be a live-service title. Reports of a troubled development first began cropping up last year. This follows a trend at Warner Bros. Games, as recent projects have failed to take off. Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a $200 million flop for the company, Warner Bros. Montreal’s Gotham Knights saw lukewarm sales when it launched, and MultiVersus will shut down in May. Minimal Linux OS runs in a 6MB PDF document in Chrome — LinuxPDF leverages RISC-V emulator Minimal Linux OS runs in a 6MB PDF document in Chrome — LinuxPDF leverages RISC-V emulator A version of the Linux operating system can now be run inside a PDF opened by a Chromium-based browser. The brains behind the coding gymnastics involved in this 6MB LinuxPDF project belong to high school student Ading2210. If the name is familiar, it might be because the same person created DoomPDF, which we reported on in January. Ading2210 explains that Linux runs in the PDF within a modified version of the TinyEMU RISC-V emulator. The developer notes that LinuxPDF “works in a very similar way to my previous DoomPDF project.” Like DoomPDF, this Linux-in-a-doc project also has a bit of a performance problem, as it is claimed to be “over 100x slower” than it should be. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Future) (Image credit: Future) The TinyEMU RISC-V emulator runs in the PDF thanks to a technique where its code is compiled “using an old version of Emscripten that targets asm.js instead of WebAssembly.” This is embedded and loads in the PDF, subsequently auto-running a minimal Linux kernel targeting that architecture. In this implementation, once you agree to ‘Start Emulator’ in your browser, you will see the LinuxPDF UI load, and a welcome message in the Linux viewport, as you wait for the OS to boot. Those who dabbled with the DoomPDF release will see some familiarity with LinuxPDF’s low-contrast gray display. LinuxPDF also outputs to the screen via the same line-by-line ASCII output that drove the gaming PDF. Below the Linux viewport in the PDF is a soft keyboard created by an array of PDF buttons. However, it is likely quicker for everyone with a decent physical keyboard to input commands into the ‘type here for keyboard inputs’ field to the lower right of the keyboard UI area. On the topic of speed and efficiency, Ading2210 humbly admits that performance might be the largest problem with LinuxPDF. “The Linux kernel takes about 30-60 seconds to boot up within the PDF, which [is] over 100x slower than normal,” notes the developer. With Chrome’s current PDF engine having its Just-in-Time (JIT) compiler disabled, Ading2210 sees no way of speeding up the code, for now. If you wish to try out the LinuxPDF, it requires a Chromium-based browser to work correctly (we checked, but it didn’t work in Firefox on PC). Others might be satisfied to simply watch Ading2210’s video of LinuxPDF starting, booting, and responding to a handful of commands. As with Ading2210’s previous projects, the source code is all available to read and tinker with on GitHub. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Friday, February 7 NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Friday, February 7 Table of Contents Table of Contents How to play Strands Hint for today’s Strands puzzle Today’s Strand answers Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, you’ll need a keen eye to solve this puzzle. Like Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, Strands can be a bit difficult to solve some days. There’s no shame in needing a little help from time to time. If you’re stuck and need to know the answers to today’s Strands puzzle, check out the solved puzzle below. How to play Strands You start every Strands puzzle with the goal of finding the “theme words” hidden in the grid of letters. Manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to craft words; double-tap the final letter to confirm. If you find the correct word, the letters will be highlighted blue and will no longer be selectable. If you find a word that isn’t a theme word, it still helps! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll get a hint — the letters of one of the theme words will be revealed and you’ll just have to unscramble it. Every single letter on the grid is used to spell out the theme words and there is no overlap. Every letter will be used once, and only once. Each puzzle contains one “spangram,” a special theme word (or words) that describe the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. When you find the spangram, it will be highlighted yellow. The goal should be to complete the puzzle quickly without using too many hints. Hint for today’s Strands puzzle Today’s theme is “A flair for fashion” Here’s a hint that might help you: what makes your clothes pop. I’m returning to talkSport ‘a better person’ I’m returning to talkSport ‘a better person’ Jermaine Jenas is returning to broadcasting on talkSport this weekend, telling the station he is “coming back a better person” six months after he was sacked from the BBC. The presenter and ex-footballer was dismissed from the BBC’s Match of the Day and The One Show following complaints about workplace conduct. Jenas told talkSport’s Shebahn Aherne on Friday that “the biggest thing in this whole situation is about taking responsibility” and he had been “looking inwards, making some improvements”. Shortly after the BBC sacked Jenas, he told The Sun he had sent “inappropriate messages”, was “ashamed” and had “let everybody down”. Jenas had his contract terminated for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to a female colleague. The BBC did not disclose further details about the allegations against him. The former footballer told The Sun he sent “inappropriate messages” to two colleagues on the One Show, but insisted he “did nothing ********” and said they were sent to “two consenting adults”. The presenter added the texts were a “huge error of judgement” for which he was “deeply sorry”, adding that he was “not a sex pest”. Jenas, who is married with four children, told the paper he was receiving therapy and accepted he “fell below [the] standards” of the BBC. At the time, talkSport said there were “no plans for Jermaine to broadcast as a presenter on talkSport in the immediate future”. He said on Friday he was returning to the radio station and would be “doing what I love most, which is talking about football”. Aherne asked him how he could assure listeners he had changed. “You need to take responsibility for your actions [and] why you’re in this position,” he said. “And there’s a reason why this has happened. And once you kind of accept those things, then you can work on yourself and you can work on the other things and you can work on your family and work towards a brighter future.” When asked about the impact his actions had had on his family, he said he realised “they didn’t deserve to be in that position”. Jenas added that he intended to “get back on [the] path” of being a role model. He will return to his job as a football pundit this weekend as co-commentator for Aston Villa vs Tottenham in the FA Cup for talkSport. Jenas had been hosting talkSport’s drive show when the news of his dismissal from the BBC became public. Jenas made his footballing debut at the age of 17. He played for his boyhood team Nottingham Forest, then Spurs and Newcastle United. He went on to play 341 times and made 21 appearances for England. He retired in 2016 aged 32, although he had not played since 2014. Jenas turned his attention to media work as a pundit while recovering from a knee injury and became a regular on Match of the Day, as well as BT Sport. He started acting as a stand-in host on The One Show in 2020 following the departure of Matt Baker. It was announced in April 2021 that he and Boyzone star Ronan Keating would be given permanent positions – Jenas presenting with Jones from Mondays to Wednesdays and Keating on Thursdays and Fridays. In December 2023, he collected an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University. Source link #returning #talkSport #person Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Softbank set to invest $40 billion in OpenAI at $260 billion valuation, sources say Softbank set to invest $40 billion in OpenAI at $260 billion valuation, sources say OpenAI CEO Sam Altman speaks next to SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son after U.S. President Donald Trump delivered remarks on AI infrastructure at the Roosevelt Room in the White House in Washington on Jan. 21, 2025. Carlos Barria | Reuters SoftBank is close to finalizing a $40 billion primary investment in OpenAI at a $260 billion pre-money valuation, sources told CNBC’s David Faber. SoftBank would pay out the funding, which would mean a $300 billion post-money valuation for OpenAI, over the next 12 to 24 months, with the first payment coming as soon as spring, CNBC’s David Faber reported Friday. SoftBank would be able to syndicate as much as $10 billion of the amount. The new funding would mean SoftBank surpasses Microsoft as the artificial intelligence startup’s top backer. OpenAI was last valued at $157 billion by private investors in October. The round was initially expected to award OpenAI a valuation of $340 billion, but a source familiar with the matter later told CNBC that the amount would be closer to $300 billion. Part of the funding is expected to be used for OpenAI’s commitment to Stargate, sources told CNBC. Stargate is a joint venture between SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle that was announced by President Donald Trump in January. The plan calls for billions of dollars to be invested in U.S. AI infrastructure. Read more CNBC news on OpenAI OpenAI launched its ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022, kicking off the generative AI race. Since then, the company has aggressively competed against the likes of Elon Musk’s xAI, as well as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta and Anthropic. The generative AI market is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade. The latest funding round comes after SoftBank in February committed to spend $3 billion per year on OpenAI’s tech for itself and its subsidiaries, including British chip designer Arm. SoftBank and OpenAI also announced a joint venture, billed as “SB OpenAI Japan,” which will market OpenAI’s enterprise tech to companies in Japan. OpenAI in January released ChatGPT Gov, an AI platform built specifically for the U.S. government. The startup pitched the new platform as having more security than ChatGPT Enterprise. ChatGPT Gov will allow government agencies to feed “non-public, sensitive information” into OpenAI’s models while operating within their own secure hosting environments, the company said. The government offering follows a series of moves by OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman that appeared to be aimed at appeasing Trump. Altman contributed $1 million to Trump’s inauguration, attended the event alongside other tech CEOs and has publicly signaled his admiration for the president. OpenAI’s new funding comes after ******** rival DeepSeek saw its app soar to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings after its debut. DeepSeek’s breakthrough R1 model roiled U.S. markets on reports that its powerful model was trained at a fraction of the cost of U.S. competitors. New Batman And Game Of Thrones Games May Be In The Works New Batman And Game Of Thrones Games May Be In The Works Rocksteady Studios, the esteemed ***-based developer known for its work on the Batman Arkham series, is said to be returning to Batman for its next project following the dismal performance of its last game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Beyond that, WB Games Montreal is now believed to be formulating an idea for a new Game of Thrones title. This all came to light in a new report that shed light on future projects said to be in the works at WB’s various game development teams. A report from Bloomberg said, “Rocksteady is looking to return to Batman for a single-player game.” However, the report said the game is “years away.” There is no further information to go on at this stage. Rocksteady Studios is best known for Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009), Batman: Arkham City (2011), and Batman: Arkham Knight (2015). 2024’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a big shift for the developer with its live-service approach and multiplayer elements. The game failed to find a big enough audience, leading to massive losses for parent company Warner Bros. The game recently wrapped up its final wave of content, and many were upset over the game’s real ending revealing major characters who died were actually only clones. The Bloomberg report also revealed that Batman: Arkham Origins studio WB Games Montreal was developing a live-service Batman game without Bruce Wayne. However, midway through development, plans changed, and the game that came out of it was the ****** received Gotham Knights in 2022. After this, the report said WB Games Montreal tried to make a “1.5” version of Gotham Knights that aimed to address some of the shortcomings of the first game. However, sources told the site that higher-ups vetoed this idea and assigned staff to other internal game projects. The report went on to say that the team at WB Games Montreal later pitched a Constantine game, and while management was said to be enthusiastic at one point, bosses ultimately suggested the team work on a game based on a more recognizable character. So it was decided to make a game based on The Flash, but that fell apart as well after 2023’s Flash, starring Ezra Miller, was a dud at the box office. WB Games Montreal is now said to be assisting Monolith Productions on the new Wonder Woman game that is reportedly encountering its own issues and is developing a pitch for a new Game of Thrones title. There is no word on what the new Game of Thrones title might be, but given the wording that even a pitch isn’t finished, it sounds like very, very early days. WB Games focusing on core franchises like Batman and Game of Thrones is no big surprise, as parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has said it will seek to maximize the chances of success by centering its attention on only the biggest franchises. Beyond Batman and Game of Thrones, a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development at Avalanche Software. This report came out no long after WB Games boss David Haddad departed the company. A replacement has not yet been named. Warner Bros. gaming boss JB Perrette admitted to Bloomberg that WB Games is running into some tough times of late, but he believes the company will turn things around in time. “We won’t get back to the profitability we want to get back to in the next two to three years. It will take two to three years to rebuild, [and] reset to levels we want to be at, but the bounce back is immediate as far as going from loss-making to profitability,” he said. GitHub Copilot Upgraded With Agent Mode and Gemini 2.0 Flash, Project Padawan Unveiled GitHub Copilot Upgraded With Agent Mode and Gemini 2.0 Flash, Project Padawan Unveiled GitHub Copilot, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot for the coding platform, is getting several new features. Announced on Thursday, the company is adding a new agent mode to the chatbot that can automatically iterate on code generated by it and analyse errors. Alongside, the Microsoft-owned platform also made Copilot Edits generally available, which was first announced at the GitHub Universe in October 2024. The company also took the curtains off Project Padawan, the platform’s first software engineer (SWE) AI agent. GitHub Is Introducing New Features to Copilot Just a week after GitHub added the DeepSeek-R1 AI model to its platform, the company has made several improvements to the Copilot AI chatbot. As detailed in a blog post, the coding platform is now introducing a new agent mode to the chatbot. The agent mode in GitHub Copilot will be more independent and proactive compared to the usual chatbot. It can iterate on its own code, recognise errors, and fix them without requiring intervention from a human user. It also comes with the ability to analyse run-time errors and it can fix them as well. Additionally, it will suggest terminal commands to users. Developers will be able to specify a task, and the agent mode Copilot will also complete all subtasks that might be necessary to complete the primary task. Agent mode in Copilot can be activated by first downloading VS Code Insiders and then enabling the agent mode setting for GitHub Copilot Chat. After that, users will have to go to the Copilot Edits panel and switch from Edit to Agent via the model picker. Copilot Edits is now generally available in VS Code. With the feature, developers can specify a set of files that require code rewrite or edits, and then using natural language, can describe what they want. Copilot Edits will contextually understand the command and then make inline changes to all the files. Users can review the suggested changes, accept them, and iterate on them with follow-up queries. GitHub explained that the feature uses a dual-model architecture to improve editing efficiency and accuracy. A foundation language model, that a user can pick from GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Gemini 2.0 Flash, understands the full context of the Edits session and generates initial edit suggestions. Then, a speculating decoding endpoint, developed in-house, will propose those changes inline in the editor. Finally, GitHub also shared the first look at Project Padawan, an autonomous software engineer (SWE) agent that will be shipped to Copilot later this year. The company said the AI agent can be assigned issues using any of the GitHub clients in Copilot, and it will produce fully tested pull requests. After finishing a task, the chatbot will also assign human reviewers to the pull request, and automatically resolve any feedback they leave. As per the post, the AI agent will be provided with a secure cloud sandbox for every task it undertakes. Copilot oversees the entire process of adding the repository, setting up the environment, analysing the codebase, editing files and builds, and conducting tests.
