After putting in decades of work, enjoying life’s “golden years” as a retiree should be enjoyable, relaxing, and carefree. At least, that’s what we all hope for. But sometimes life throws us curveballs, like a major health issue. It’s no fun to navigate treatment for ******* or other diseases at the best of times, but being retired without health insurance can take that stress — and its financial burden — to a whole new level. This is especially true for those needing chemotherapy or other treatment immediately but not getting the necessary coverage approval in a timely manner. The good news is there are options. This type of financial burden is so prevalent that a 2022 study found 75% of those being treated for colorectal ******* experienced “serious financial hardship” during their first year of diagnosis. Interestingly, almost all 380 participants had health insurance — meaning coverage doesn’t necessarily shield patients from financial hardship and isn’t always the path to quicker or better treatment, as lead study investigator, Veena Shankaran, M.D., M.S., of the Fred Hutchinson ******* Center, attested. What’s more, a survey from the Association of Oncology Social Work showed ******* treatment costs negatively impact the ability to focus on recovery for 87% of patients with major financial burdens from their treatment. Of them, 75% constantly worry about financial issues because of treatment costs. If your spouse has health insurance, start there to see what you’re covered for under their plan. If not, or it simply isn’t enough, you might qualify for Medicaid, Medicare or Marketplace (Obamacare) insurance. Medicaid is funded by states and the federal government, offering free or low-cost coverage to those with low incomes or disabilities. Eligibility varies by state and is determined by things like age, household income, assets, family size and disability. Medicare is a federal insurance program for those aged 65 and up. Patients of any age are covered through Medicaid if they’ve received SSDI for at least two years or if they have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or end-stage renal disease. Financial assistance may be available through ongoing programs like Extra Help/Part D Low-Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings. There are specific enrollment periods with exceptions, like for those with household income under 150% of the federal poverty level. Financial assistance may be available through cost-sharing and premium tax credit deductions. For alternatives to insurance plans, here are other ways to lower your medical costs. The [Patient Advocate Foundation( provides case management and mediation services, sometimes with the help of doctors and healthcare lawyers. They also offer financial assistance through a scholarship program and a co-pay relief program. Most American hospitals have a financial assistance department. Reach out to yours to explain your situation and see what advice, support or suggestions they can offer. By assessing your condition and financial situation, oncology social workers can make referrals to community agencies offering medical financial support, including to organizations with sliding scale fees. The American ******* Society keeps a list of resources to help cover ******* treatment and care expenses, which can include everything from transportation, meals and lodging, to day-to-day living costs like mortgage and childcare fees. If available, explore the viability of participating in a relevant clinical trial. A study of ******* patients enrolled in clinical trials found a near-$6,000 savings per patient compared to those who were not, so it could be a good option. Then, the earthquake struck,” 83-year-old Eirini Mindrinou recalls, her voice steady but distant, as if trying to grasp a memory that never truly faded. “The house split open before closing again. Through the crack in the roof, I could see the sky.” The 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which struck between Santorini and the nearby island of Amorgos, destroyed much of the island, and a powerful aftershock 12 minutes later finished what little remained. Fifty-three people died. The island, then just a quiet fishing village, was scarred and its people fled. Subtle tremors that had begun in June 2024 turned into full-fledged earthquakes, some exceeding 4.0 on the Richter scale, shaking homes and unsettling the island’s residents. Families rushing to leave by air and sea, desperately seeking respite as the ground shook once again. But not everyone is fleeing. Those that remain display the mix of courage, necessity, and a deep connection to the land that has come to define the locals of this island. They endure sleepless nights, haunted by memories of the past and the terrifying unknown of what’s yet to come. “The noise from the earthquake, the sounds of [other people’s] homes breaking apart – it’s unbearable. Even in my house, it’s become overwhelming,” says Margarita Karamolegkou, a local businesswoman. “I’ve felt tired, day after day, with no end in sight… But I haven’t felt fear. I can’t leave my home, and I can’t leave the people who’ve stayed behind.” This resilience is nothing new. People have have withstood both social change -about 3.4 million visited the island last year, according to Mayor Nikos Zorzos – and seismic shifts. Now, as always, they have come together in solidarity. “We’re doing our best to support the vulnerable,” says Matthaios Fytros, a local volunteer and merchant. “People with disabilities, the elderly – many struggle to get around, and their homes are hard to reach. If a major earthquake hits, I know exactly where they live, and I’ll get to them as fast as I can, alongside the firefighters.” Matthaios and others patrol the island, ensuring abandoned properties aren’t looted and helping anyone in need. “I’m not afraid,” he says with quiet conviction. “We’re proud of our island. I just hope everything works out and that this ordeal ends soon. At a press briefing Friday afternoon, Benjamin McIntyre-Coble, assistant incident management chief with the U.S. Coast Guard District 17, said that “an item of interest” had been located, and that search crews were headed to the location of the item. He would not speculate about what might have been found. Plane disappeared shortly before it was due to land David Olson, Bering Air’s director of operations, told the Associated Press that the plane left Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. Thursday, and lost radio contact about 38 minutes later. According to the flight-tracking site Flightradar24, the plane’s last position was received at 3:16 p.m. local time, roughly 10 minutes before it was scheduled to arrive in Nome. McIntyre-Coble said radar forensic data showed that at approximately 3:18 p.m., the plane “experienced some kind of event that caused a rapid loss of elevation and rapid loss of speed.” The fire department said that the pilot of the missing plane had told Anchorage air traffic control that “he intended to enter a holding pattern while waiting for the runway to be cleared.” According to the National Weather Service, there was light snow, freezing drizzle and mist around Nome Airport on Thursday evening. Danielle Tessen, a spokeswoman for Alaska’s Transportation Department, told the New York Times that the runway at Nome Airport that the plane had been approaching had been open throughout the day, and that de-icing operations took place “when no aircraft were on approach or near the airport.” The Alaska Department of Public Safety said in a statement that state troopers were contacted by the U.S. Coast Guard about “an overdue aircraft” at 4 p.m. local time Thursday, and that search and rescue crews were working to determine the plane’s last known coordinates. The identities of those on board have not been released, but all of their families have been notified, the Coast Guard said Friday. Bering Air is an FAA-certified regional air service based in Nome with hubs in Kotzebue and Unalakleet, according to its website. It operates passenger and cargo flights seven days a week out of each hub to 32 communities along the northwest coast of Alaska. According to the Alaska Transportation Department, more than 80% of communities in the state are inaccessible by car and “depend on air access to provide basic needs.” Unalakleet has a population of about 800, according to U.S. Census data. Mr. Trump said he was taking the action because Biden did the same to him in 2021, setting a precedent. The special counsel made a number of observations about the then-president’s memory that enraged Biden’s allies and provided political ammunition to Republicans, including that he could present himself to a jury as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Hur ultimately declined to seek criminal charges against Biden for his handling of the documents and said the evidence did not establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Biden had violated the law. In one of his first executive actions since returning to the White House, Mr. Trump revoked the security clearances of dozens of former intelligence officials who signed a letter in 2020 claiming that emails found on a laptop owned by Biden’s son, Hunter, bore the hallmarks of a Russian disinformation campaign. Emergency crews extricated Shoff from the Mercedes and performed life-saving measures. Unfortunately, Shoff died at the scene due to his injuries. Shoff played Men’s Basketball for the Cougars starting in 2001 until 2004, appearing in 57 games. BYU said he helped take the Cougars to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. The 9,932-square-foot lot was listed for $999,000 on Jan. 16—less than 10 days after the Palisades fire tore through the coastal community, destroyed hundreds of structures, and left dozens of evacuated residents without homes to return to. A harrowing Google Maps image of the location reveals that the four-bedroom, three-bathroom abode that once occupied the lot was decimated in the fire, along with several other dwellings on the street. Despite this, the property found a buyer within days of being listed—and a ***** is pending. Although the sellers wish to remain anonymous, property records indicate that they purchased the home for $1.54 million in 2005, and they are understood to have lived there ever since. According to listing agent Richard Schulman, of Schulman Team/KW Advisors, she did not hesitate to list the property in the wake of the fire—having made the decision almost immediately after the blazes tore through her home that she did not wish to rebuild. “For her, it’s an easy decision and this made the most sense for her,” Schulman tells Realtor.com®. “She was absolutely clear she was not going to rebuild. The Palisades fire was one of multiple blazes that broke out in Los Angeles County at the start of January and collectively burned more than 57,000 acres, while claiming 29 lives, according to Cal Fire. Pacific Palisades and Altadena were among the hardest-hit communities‚ with a new report by the University of California, Los Angeles, revealing that the blazes sparked in these areas—the Palisades and Eaton fires—might have caused up to $164 billion in property and financial losses. Questions now linger as to what will become of the neighborhoods that were devastated by the fires, as residents whose homes were destroyed face the agonizing decision to rebuild or attempt to sell the land so they can walk away—as this one Pacific Palisades resident has done. Despite the destruction caused by the fires, the listing for the land sought to highlight its “potential,” noting its prime location in the “highly sought-after Palisades Highlands area,” and describing it as a “blank canvas” on which to “create your dream property.” “While the land has been impacted by the recent Palisades fire, it presents a blank canvas for visionary buyers ready to reimagine its potential,” the description stated. “Seller is looking for serious offers only so they can move on with their lives. Don’t miss the chance to bring new life to this remarkable location.” According to Schulman, the buyer is a “local investor” who plans to develop the property—although the real estate agent conceded that they may have to wait a while before they can do so. The Palisades fire, which broke out on Jan. 7, destroyed thousands of structures. There’s still not any access to the properties in this area,” says Schulman. “There are huge question marks about that.” Even without a structure, the lot is attractive. It’s 10,000 square feet and on a ****-de-sac in the Palisades Highlands area. Schulman describes it as a “very private neighborhood that’s coastal.” “We had a lot of activity. We probably had 70 or 80 phone calls. They were entirely out of area and investor-focused,” he says. “A fair number of homes are still standing in this section. This is a great place to live. People realized that. We had so many phone calls. Despite what happened … this will be an amazing area again.” Schulman also reveals that other plots of land left behind from the California fires have attracted a slew of interest. “I believe we’re still the only land property (for *****) in the Pacific Palisades area. The feel-good ad showcasing how AI can help small businesses featured a Wisconsin cheesemonger using Gemini to generate a product description for Gouda, only for the AI to confidently declare that the cheese accounts for “50 to 60 percent of global cheese consumption.” However, this is a full-blown dairy debacle, as there’s no evidence that Gouda is anywhere near that popular. The error was called out on social media, with plenty of cheeseheads deriding the idea that half the world’s cheese supply is Gouda. Gemini had done what AI occasionally does: confidently hallucinate an absolute nonsense fact and present it as the truth. At first, Google’s VP Jerry Dischler stepped in to defend Gemini, at least a little bit. He insisted the statistic wasn’t an AI hallucination but came from multiple websites that Gemini had scraped for the statistic. A quick manual web search confirms that aspect, with the Gouda Illuminati apparently spreading the idea across the internet but never sourced to any actual study or census. Google’s argument that “It’s not our AI’s fault; the internet is just full of bad information.” doesn’t exactly make Gemini sound as appealing as Google. Hey Nate – not a hallucination, Gemini is grounded in the Web – and users can always check the results and references. In this case, multiple sites across the web include the 50-60% stat. The new version, now posted on YouTube, keeps the friendly cheesemonger but ditches the dairy misinformation. “After the question came up about the Gouda stat, we spoke with the owner of the Wisconsin Cheese Mart to ask him how he would handle it,” Google said in a statement to multiple press outlets. “Following his suggestion to have Gemini rewrite the product description without the stat, we updated the UI to reflect what the business would do.” Even that wasn’t without controversy, as people who called out the original error noted that the new video replaced the original but with the upload timestamp of the flawed ad. That’s not something anyone on YouTube can do. So it suggests Google used its ownership of YouTube to finesse the new video into the slot of the original, ensuring it maintained the viewing figures and other stats, but without its erroneous gouda assumption. Still, if Google wants people to trust Gemini with their lives and businesses, these kinds of errors aren’t going to help. Unlike a human writer who might pause and think, “Wait, that sounds ridiculous,” AI has no built-in common sense filter. It just serves up whatever it finds, and sometimes that means confidently sharing a fake cheese fact with millions of Super Bowl viewers. Gemini is supposed to be Google’s answer to ChatGPT. The company has spent billions on AI development and has announced plans to invest $75 billion this year alone to keep up in the AI race. But all the computing power in the world won’t matter if people don’t trust what Gemini tells them. For the average person, it’s a good reminder that AI still struggles with accuracy and shouldn’t be the only arbiter of what gets treated as fact. Meta prepares for layoffs on Monday -internal memo Meta prepares for layoffs on Monday -internal memo By Katie Paul NEW YORK (Reuters) – Facebook owner Meta Platforms plans to carry out its expected company-wide layoffs next week while pushing ahead with the expedited hiring of machine learning engineers, it told staffers in internal memos seen by Reuters on Friday. Notices will go out to employees losing their jobs starting at 5 a.m. local time Monday in most countries, including in the U.S., according to one of the posts, authored by Meta’s Head of People Janelle Gale. Employees in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands will be exempt from the cuts “due to local regulations,” while those in more than a dozen other countries across Europe, Asia and Africa will receive their notifications between February 11 and February 18, it said. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the posts. The company confirmed last month that it was planning to trim about 5% of its “lowest performers” and backfill at least some of the positions. The Friday memo, in which Gale referred to the cuts as “performance terminations,” was first reported by The Information. Unlike with previous company-wide layoffs, Meta was planning to keep its offices open on Monday and would not issue any updates providing further details on the decisions, Gale said in her post. A separate memo, posted by VP of Engineering for Monetization Peng Fan also on Friday, asked staffers to assist with an expedited hiring process for machine learning engineers and other “business critical” engineering roles.
