  1. ‘Expect more’: Second ‘once-in-a-century’ flood in six years worsened by climate change ‘Expect more’: Second ‘once-in-a-century’ flood in six years worsened by climate change Every eight-year-old in North Queensland has lived through two “once-in-a-century” floods. The science shows the second “once-in-a-century” North Queensland flood since 2019 has been wetter, windier and hotter because of climate change. Analysis shows the rain dump over North Queensland this past weekend brought 20 per cent more rain and 20 per cent more wind from an ocean 1.5C warmer than during similar storms last century. Scientists from leading universities in the US, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and the *** say the weather event was a “very exceptional meteorological event” that was almost certainly “strengthened by climate change”. On Thursday, Anthony Albanese stood on a North Queensland roadside, next to a bridge that had again been washed away in floodwaters, and spoke to assembled media. “We are seeing in Australia, unfortunately, more extreme weather events and they’re more intense,” the Prime Minister said. Camera IconTownsville girl Annabella Giorgas, 11, has witnessed her second ‘once-in-a-century’ flood. Adam Head / NewsWire Credit: News Corp Australia “Doesn’t mean everything is due to climate change. We’ve always had extreme weather events in this country, but we are seeing them more often. “Last year was, of course, the hottest year on record in global temperatures. We do need to continue to respond in the long term, but we need to look after people.” On the ground in North Queensland, there is plenty of help still to be dished out. Electricity in the town of Ingham was turned off on February 1, as the substation was subsumed by the Herbert River. The town of 5000 people had already been cut off by flooded and damaged roadways. Defence Force planes flew in groceries on Thursday and Friday. On February 2, a 63-year-old woman died when an SES rescue boat capsized in Ingham. Two days later, an 82-year-old woman was found dead in a canefield outside Ingham. Camera IconThe areas of Ingham and Cardwell were hit hardest by the 2025 floods. NewsWire / Adam Head Credit: News Corp Australia About 100km south, Townsville dodged a bullet as the Ross River broke but did not reach its most fearsome levels. Nonetheless, six low-lying suburbs had to evacuate before the water inevitably reached homes. Thousands more outside the low-lying “****** zone” were inundated. People are now throwing out soiled furniture and belongings. The whole sorry situation is deja vu from Townsville’s 2019 floods when three people died and at least 10 were immediately infected by bacteria, stirred up by contaminated floodwaters. *********** climate advocacy group Solutions for Climate director Barry Traill said people should take their experiences of climate change to the polling booths. “It will definitely be on the mind of voters in Townsville who have been forced to leave everything behind for the second time in six years,” Dr Traill told NewsWire. “As it will be for Victorians fighting heatwaves and bushfires this week.” Dr Traill is an ecologist, conservationist and has seen the most brutal effects of climate change. Camera IconQueensland Premier David Crisafulli’s hometown of Ingham was hardest hit. NewsWire/ Adam Head Credit: News Corp Australia “I’m a volunteer firefighter in Queensland,” Dr Traill said. “In the decade since I joined, I’ve seen the reality of this increasing year by year. In our summer wet seasons, there are more extreme floods. “In our spring dry seasons, there are more extreme dry spells and fires. This increase in weather disasters has been long predicted by climate scientists and is now becoming an increasing reality for all Australians.” The federal Liberal and National parties are offering voters a nuclear plan that would pump out billions of tonnes of pollution before the reactors could be built, Dr Traill said. Labor is progressing the shift to clean renewable power and has the country on track to reduce climate pollution 42 per cent by 2030. “Experts have pointed to this pathway as necessary to keep climate disasters to a minimum,” Dr Traill said. Camera IconTowns and farming communities south of Townsville were quickly cut off by floodwaters. TMR Credit: Supplied “These floods are another huge wake-up call for Australia – we are all now bearing the costs. We need to act on climate,” Dr Traill said. “We need to rapidly get out of polluting coal and gas that is heating the world.” The international weather analysis referenced above was done by the Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace’s Climate Modeling Centre. The global network of scientists looks at extreme weather events, comparing similar events since 2001 with incidents between 1979 and 2001. Comparing the two periods during this latest downpour, temperatures in the region were 1C to 1.2C warmer than what they were in the past. This sparked up to 17mm/day more rain (up 20 per cent) over the coastal areas and the mountains of Queensland. The patchwork nature of substantial rain events makes comparison difficult. But Climate Resilience managing director James Stuart said the rainfall was similar to the “once-in-a-century” 2019 floods. Camera IconMassive flooding in Ingham in 1967. Lost Ingham and District Credit: Supplied “In broad terms, the rainfall is comparable,” he said. In Townsville in 2019, repeated rounds of heavy rain fell in the Ross River Dam catchment, with 1700mm at some locations. This time, the heaviest rain was further north around Rollingstone, Cardwell, and Ingham and of a similar magnitude. This time, 104mm was recorded in one hour at Paluma Dam. At Paluma, 1311mm was observed over three days and 1061mm in two days. The historical records were getting less and less useful for predicting the next disaster, Mr Stuart said. “What’s probably more relevant for Australians today are the record-high sea surface temperatures, which have the potential to fuel increased rainfall. So we should expect more of these events around Australia if ocean warming continues, and there is no sign of it abating.” Physicists and marine biologists tell NewsWire these most recent floods washed highly damaging sediment onto the Great Barrier Reef. Camera IconIngham is home to about 5000 people. NewsWire / Adam Head Credit: News Corp Australia “For the second time in six years, Townsville has been hit by a ‘once-in-a-century’ flood, sending a surge of sediment, nutrients and pollutants toward the Great Barrier Reef,” marine biologist Jodie Rummer said. “These floodwaters smother corals, block sunlight and disrupt marine ecosystems – impacts made worse by rising ocean temperatures.” Teams of marine biologists are already on and under the water checking on the Reef’s immediate health. “After the 2019 floods, record-breaking nitrogen and sediment loads devastated water quality,” Dr Rummer said. “Now, history is repeating itself, compounding the crisis. “These extreme events are becoming more frequent as climate change intensifies. If we want to secure the future of the Reef, we need to reduce emissions, protect water quality and build resilience in these ecosystems before it’s too late.” One silver lining is the immense rain clouds actually shield the Reef from sunlight. “ … bringing respite from the bleaching-level heat stress that has accumulated,” physicist Scott Heron said. The James Cook University professor said the rainfall came from an “atmospheric river”, and despite a small reprieve from coral bleaching conditions, the risk was far from over. “We’ll be watching carefully how the sea temperature in February and March develops after this event is finished,” Professor Heron said. “The Reef is still at risk for further coral bleaching this year, as climate change has brought the baseline temperatures closer to the threshold for bleaching.” On that roadside on Thursday, alongside the Labor Prime Minister and Queensland’s LNP Premier, Bob Katter joined the chorus of calls for ******* and stronger roads and bridges so the same infrastructure does not need to be rebuilt again and again. The veteran politician also wants diggers and bulldozers to shape the landscape. “The Premier and Prime Minister are dead right, we keep doing this all the time. Please, can we divert the upper Herbert (river). If we divert the upper Herbert, this doesn’t happen,” Mr Katter said. “Half a million people are trapped on this coastal plain. If a cyclone comes in or anything, we need a tunnel to get off the coastal plain. “We need the diversion of the upper Herbert, or in my lifetime – which is pretty short now – there’s going to be a great loss of life.” Source link #Expect #onceinacentury #flood #years #worsened #climate #change Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Heart health: Sisters of women who have complicated pregnancies at greater risk of cardiocvascular disease Heart health: Sisters of women who have complicated pregnancies at greater risk of cardiocvascular disease The sisters of women who have complicated pregnancies may find themselves at greater risk of cardiovascular disease, research suggests. A study of more than 1.2million women found those who suffered pregnancy conditions such as pre-eclampsia, or who give birth to a small baby, were more than twice as likely to suffer a stroke or heart failure. And, surprisingly, their sisters are also 40 per cent more likely to have these cardiovascular problems after giving birth – and the increased risk was seen in sisters who had no pregnancy complications themselves. Pregnancy complications and cardiovascular disease may both be determined by similar genes in women. It means sisters who share genetic quirks could have a greater risk of both health problems. The findings of the Swedish study also suggest it is not just pregnancy complications which can trigger cardiovascular disease at a relatively young age. The sisters of women with pregnancy complications may find cardiovascular disease is triggered afterwards by the impact of carrying a baby on their heart and bloodvessels. Despite this, cardiovascular disease is still not common among women until later life, with only 780 women in the large study developing it after pregnancy complications, and only 151 sisters being diagnosed. But Dr Angla Mantel, who led the study from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, said: “It may be important to identify these women early to offer preventive treatment for pregnancy complications as well as lifestyle counselling and follow-up for cardiovascular disease risk.” The study looked at cardiovascular disease in women for an average of 14 years after they first gave birth to a child. Researchers studied around 165,000 women with pregnancy complications. Almost a third of these women had a sister who had given birth without complications – and about 60,000 of these sisters were studied. These people were compared to 992,108 unrelated women who had given birth in the same ******* without pregnancy complications. The group with pregnancy complications were 2.33 times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. And the study, in the European Heart Journal, found their sisters had a 72 per cent higher risk of developing heart failure. Experts say some sisters may share a risk of cardiovascular disease due to factors when growing up, such as diet or exercise. 10. Free Oldbury sandwiches for all after West Brom loan signing Free Oldbury sandwiches for all after West Brom loan signing When Ritchie Massey made a post on X on transfer deadline day promising free sausage sandwiches if West Bromwich Albion signed Adam Armstrong, he did not expect to be predicting the future. The Oldbury cafe owner’s post went viral after the football club’s own account reposted his one and added “get the fryer on”. The deal for the Southampton striker was sealed 14 hours after the transfer window closed. Mr Massey said the signing was a massive plus and would see the club have a goalscorer – “something that we’ve missed for a couple seasons now” – so what better way to celebrate than free sandwiches? His post has been seen by more than 1.2 million people on X with more than 500 likes. “It is absolutely unbelievable, our social media has gone bonkers,” Mr Massey said. “We’ve received lots of new followers and friends, it’s amazing.” The Massey Cafe will give free sausage sandwiches to everyone who comes through their doors ahead of the Baggies home match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday – whether they are football fans or not. “We’ve got extra staff working and I’ve ordered more sausages and bread to make sure we’re all ready to go to meet the demands,” Mr Massey said. “I have to admit, preparations started around 11 o’clock on Monday evening.” Armstrong has scored three goals in 23 appearances for Southampton this season and his move to West Brom sees him reunited with boss Tony Mowbray. He first played for Mowbray as an 18-year-old on loan at Coventry City and bagged 20 goals in a memorable season. Three years later, Mowbray had moved on to Blackburn Rovers and he again signed Armstrong, initially on loan but then for a fee of £1.75m. The move went so well Mowbray was able to demand a fee of £15m when he sold Armstrong on to Southampton three years later. “He reminds me of Kevin Phillips, a goalscorer, something that we’ve missed for a couple of seasons now,” Mr Massey said. “It is a massive plus that has given us fans a big boost.” Source link #Free #Oldbury #sandwiches #West #Brom #loan #signing Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

A flustered passenger shared how they were accused of being a “seat squatter” in an uncomfortable situation. lightpoet – stock.adobe.com Reddit user @pinkney59 explained the confusion in a Delta Airlines thread, Fox News reported. The person said they were first on the standby list to be given a seat and were instructed to head back to row 29 to enjoy the flight. However, when the passenger got there, a person with a ticket for that seat was already settled in. A flight attendant stepped over to remedy the situation and reassigned the Reddit poster a seat in Comfort Plus. But just a few minutes later, a father walked over with his daughter and claimed the person was in their assigned seat. “I super nicely explained I was just given this seat by the FA (flight attendant),” the person recounted, then suggested, “Maybe there is a mix-up.” kasto – stock.adobe.com “I super nicely explained I was just given this seat by the FA (flight attendant),” the person recounted, suggesting, “Maybe there is a mix-up.” But when another flight attendant came over, they “loudly scolded” the flyer. “WHO told you you can sit there?!? Your ticket doesn’t even say comfort+!!!” the second flight attendant said. The confused passenger described the flight attendant who had instructed them to sit in the Comfort Plus seat but was taken aback by being “publicly reprimanded in front of the plane when I was just following directions,” they confessed. “I wasn’t trying to scam a comfort seat — this is literally where she told me to sit,” the traveler insisted. Fortunately, another passenger who witnessed the whole debacle stepped in to say, “I saw this whole thing happen and heard her tell you to sit here, so don’t worry,” which gave the person “some relief.” “After a whole commotion I was reseated for a third time, and frankly felt kind of ******* for being framed as some seat squatter when I was just following directions!!!” the Reddit user said. People flooded the comments with similar frustrating stories and complaints of airlines’ seeming disorganization. Several people replied that something “similar” happened to them. The seat squatter trend has been taking off over the last few months with many shaming the controversial attempt at upgrading an airplane seat. A person claiming to be a flight attendant shared an instance in which “people sat down, received their pre-flight booze and then said, ‘I’m just going to go say hi to my sister in the back of the plane,’ and walked off with the free drink to obviously not return,” the Reddit user wrote. “Some people have no shame. They pulled a fast one and probably post[ed] it to social media, too,” another Reddit user responded. “Dignity and respect for others is out, pranks and hacks are in.” Air travel etiquette has become one of the most hotly debated topics online in recent years as Reddit threads have filled with complaints of “aisle lice” and videos of unruly passengers go viral. 13. Judge grants DOGE access to Labor Department systems Judge grants DOGE access to Labor Department systems Washington — A federal judge on Friday declined to limit the White House Department of Government Efficiency’s access to Department of Labor systems as members of the task force led by billionaire Elon Musk are fanning out across federal agencies as part of President Trump’s directive to slash the size of the government. U.S. District Judge John Bates denied the request to issue a temporary restraining order while legal proceedings continue in the court battle brought by six labor unions and the Economic Policy Institute. “On the current record, plaintiffs have failed to establish standing,” Bates wrote. “So although the Court harbors concerns about defendants’ alleged conduct, it must deny plaintiffs’ motion at this time.” The unions have argued that the task force known as DOGE is violating multiple laws by seeking access to sensitive systems, including at the Treasury Department and Office of Personnel Management. Citing the actions of DOGE employees at the other agencies, lawyers for the unions said the Musk-led body’s next target is the Department of Labor. “They will demand that DOGE staff be granted access to systems that they are legally barred from; they will fire any employee who protects the integrity of those systems; and they will claim power and authority that Congress has never granted them with respect to agency staff and Department programs,” union lawyers wrote in a filing. Mark Samburg, who is representing the unions, told Bates during a hearing that information from millions of people housed within Department of Labor systems is at imminent risk of disclosure, which he said underscores the need for the court to step in and limit DOGE’s access. He said allowing DOGE to continue to access systems could have a chilling effect on the Labor Department’s confidentiality. Michael Gerardi, a lawyer for the Justice Department, defended DOGE’s actions and said the task force is accessing the information to follow through on Mr. Trump’s executive order creating it. Citing public media reports, the judge pushed back on the government’s attorney, telling him, ” You’re asking me to put absolute confidence in the fact that nothing will happen,” after noting the young age of DOGE employees and what he said was their inexperience with government agencies. Bates later told Gerardi that these are people from outside the Department of Labor “who are accessing the systems for a reason that has nothing to do with why the system was created.” Samburg then highlighted public reports indicating DOGE employees are “regularly violating the law” and said there is a federal law in place that established a set of standards for maintaining personal information. The swift actions of Musk’s DOGE and its employees has jolted the federal government, as its employees have turned up at several federal agencies seeking access to its systems and the information contained within in them. Several lawsuits have been filed that aim to restrict DOGE’s ability to get its hands on the information. A federal judge earlier this week limited DOGE employees working at the Treasury Department with access to payment record or system of record. Those who can see that information will have “read only access,” according to the judge’s order. Melissa Quinn Melissa Quinn is a politics reporter for CBSNews.com. 16. NYC employees given steps to follow during ICE interaction NYC employees given steps to follow during ICE interaction NEW YORK (PIX11) – The City of New York is not instructing city employees to cooperate with federal law enforcement or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a spokesperson for Mayor Admas said Friday evening. A memo obtained by PIX11 News outlines the steps to take if non-local law enforcement requests access to non-public areas for immigration enforcement. According to the date at the top, the memo was shared with city employees on January 13. More Local News The city says the memo contains steps for city workers to follow. The bottom of the memo reads: It is important to understand that taking actions that are intended to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection a person who is in the United States unlawfully is a federal crime. You cannot take affirmative steps that are intended to help a person avoid being found by ICE. Memo entiltiled: Procedure for In-Person Interactions with Non-Local Law Enforcement The memo gives the following steps: Ask the federal law enforcement officer for their name, badge number, and business card Ask the officer why they need access to your workplace or why they need information Ask the officer if they have any documents related to their visit, such as a warrant or subpoena. If they do, the city employee should make copies or take photos. Let the officer know city employees have been told to seek guidance from the general counsel. Ask the officer to wait while you seek guidance The memo guides city employees to let the officer talk to the general counsel if they ask. City employees should follow the directions of the general counsel If the employee feels threatened, they should give the officer the information they have asked for or let them enter the site. The memo suggests that city employees should never engage in a physical or verbal altercation with any law enforcement officer If the employee feels they must comply with the request without general counsel, they should try to take photos or videos of the incident. A city spokesperson noted that the immigration situation and guidance are constantly evolving. As a result, the city is finalizing further guidance for city workers to follow if they encounter federal law enforcement attempting to enter a building. “Anyone perpetuating the claim that New York City is instructing city employees to open doors for federal law enforcement, including ICE simply, is spreading misinformation that only fuels anxiety within immigrant communities and our city’s workforce.” New York City is considered a sanctuary city, which means it limits or declines to cooperate with the federal government’s enforcement of immigration law. 18. Celebrity guests attend King Charles’ dazzling dinner: Beckhams, Dame Helen Mirren, Donatella Versace and more Celebrity guests attend King Charles’ dazzling dinner: Beckhams, Dame Helen Mirren, Donatella Versace and more David and Victoria Beckham were the surprise guests last night at a dazzling dinner hosted by the King to promote Anglo-Italian relations. The former England footballer, 49, who had two spells at AC Milan, and his wife, 50, joined a slew of celebrities at Highgrove, His Majesty’s private home in Gloucestershire. Other esteemed attendees included actress Dame Helen Mirren, 79, designer Donatella Versace, 69, and actor Stanley Tucci, 64. Beckham was last year announced as an ambassador of the King’s Foundation, the charity which runs Highgrove, and has had private meetings there with Charles, 76, bonding over a shared love of the countryside and, surprisingly, bee-keeping. Last night’s event was designed to mark the King and Queen’s forthcoming state visits to the Holy See and Italy in early April. A reception was held from 7pm in a marquee in the gardens with canapes including Rare & Pasture salumi, Tuscan- style pate and coppa, Yorkshire pecorino cheese puffs and British vegetable caponata, washed down with the King’s own Highgrove sparkling wine. The dinner itself took place in the estate’s purpose-built entertaining centre, the Orchard Room. The menu for the evening was created by world-renowned chef, Francesco Mazzei, 51, and was inspired by Tucci. Drinks for the evening were created by renowned mixologist Alessandro Palazzi, 67, using Italian flavours and herbs foraged from Highgrove Gardens. 19. UNLV shooter kept dresses for sex workers, received startling text in aftermath, Las Vegas police say UNLV shooter kept dresses for sex workers, received startling text in aftermath, Las Vegas police say LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man who shot and killed three UNLV professors kept dozens of dresses for sex workers in his apartment and received a startling text message in the aftermath of the mass shooting, according to the Las Vegas Metro police final report released Friday. On Dec. 6, 2023, Anthony Polito, 67, shot and killed Lee Business School professors Dr. Jerry Cha-Jan Chang and Dr. Patricia Navarro Velez; and College of Liberal Arts professor Dr. Naoko Takemaru. A fourth professor shot in the incident survived. A university police officer shot and killed Polito about 10 minutes into the mass shooting at Beam Hall. A message on Polito’s phone said, “Good to see you made the news!!” according to the more than 200-page final report police released more than a year after the mass shooting. The person who sent the text message lives out of state and told police he did not know Polito was involved in the shooting and was referring to Las Vegas in general. As the 8 News Now Investigators reported after the shooting, Polito had applied to four positions at the university but was not interviewed for any. Polito also applied to other positions within the Nevada System of Higher Education but was rejected, police said. Lee Business School professors Dr. Jerry Cha-Jan Chang (right) and Dr. Patricia Navarro Velez (left); and College of Liberal Arts professor Dr. Naoko Takemaru (center) died in the shooting. A fourth professor shot in the incident survived. (UNLV/KLAS) “Based on interviews, Polito’s perceived superiority and dissatisfaction with the lack of appreciation for his talents were likely aggravating factors,” police said in the report. “Those closest to him noted his frustration with his lack of employment in Las Vegas.” Polito targeted offices in Beam Hall, focusing on the fourth and fifth floors, police said. In a Beam Hall hallway, police found laminated cards, which they described as a target list, with photos, names and room numbers of professors in the school’s business department, the 8 News Now Investigators reported in the aftermath. The cards also contained photos and names of professors at East Carolina University, documents said. The two-sided cards contain pictures and room numbers for 12 staff, including the dean, vice dean and other professors. Photo of AnthoOn Dec. 6, 2023, Anthony Polito, 67, committed the mass shooting at UNLV. (KLAS) Polito moved to the Las Vegas valley in 2017, the report said, to teach at Roseman University. The university later ended the program Polito taught and he was terminated. UNLV first denied Polito employment in 1994, police said. In July 2022, Polito bought a pistol in Henderson and then “progressively purchased” items including magazine holders and ammunition, police said. He was also in severe debt, owing $75,000 to credit card companies, police said. While searching Polito’s Henderson apartment, detectives found a note on the door indicating he received a 30-day eviction notice to “pay rent or quit,” the report said. The notice was dated Dec. 6, the day of the shooting, but put on the door after the shooting had already occurred. The leasing company where Polito lived called Polito twice before the shooting about missing that month’s rent, police said. Police also found a will on Polito’s dining room table. Officers also located a to-do list, which included “create a will” and “write up an obituary,” police said. Also inside the apartment, detectives located “a vast quantity of women’s dresses that women and prostitutes would wear for his entertainment,” police said. “Each hanger had a size delineator tag with each dress. One style in particular was in four different colors. Each series of dress, color and style ranged in sizes from 2 to 12. These dresses were not worn by Polito since he was much larger than any sizes present.” On dozens of digital devices Polito kept in his home and in a safety deposit box, detectives said they located files about UNLV, Polito’s applications and a map of Beam Hall. Polito also had folders containing information about faculty with information from news articles and public records. One folder was titled “DevilBosses,” according to police. On Nov. 5, a month before the shooting, Polito visited the UNLV campus and parked in a lot, police said. Based on video evidence, it does not appear Polito exited his car. Before the shooting, Polito sent 22 letters to people across the country from a Las Vegas valley post office, police said. All of the letters contained a white power, which was determined to not be hazardous. Before the shooting, Polito mailed 22 letters to various people, including some on his lamented cards, police said. The letters included “Happy Aniversary” cards and several contained talc. (LVMPD) The letters included “Happy Aniversary” cards and several contained talc. No letter was addressed to any current UNLV faculty. Police said Polito likely “had delusions of grandeur” and used a photo of Robert De Niro on social media and Reddit. “He frequented conservative subreddits and posted far-right memes and misogynistic content,” detectives said. Polito also “was fixated… and obsessive about student reviews,” telling “students he remembers faces, names and seating arrangements of those who gave him bad reviews.” Polito also kept homemade ************ on his devices, with police adding it was unclear if the other party consented to the recording. At least two devices contained nearly 2,000 pictures of a room with instructions for a spy camera, police said. Dresses hung by size and style inside Anthony Polito’s apartment. (LVMPD) “He had no documented social life, aside from using sugar daddy and swinger-type websites,” police said. Polito’s website hosted his “theories” on “various mysteries and puzzles,” including one that claimed that he had solved the Zodiac killer case. In the year since the shooting, the UNLV community created six murals for the entrance to Beam Hall: “The intention is to reframe the experience of walking into the building and support healing while honoring the memories of the professors lost,” a spokesperson said. 22. The 9 Best Canned Foods You Should Be Eating for Weight Loss, According to Dietitians The 9 Best Canned Foods You Should Be Eating for Weight Loss, According to Dietitians Reviewed by Dietitian Emily Lachtrupp, M.S., RD Getty Images. EatingWell design. If weight loss is your goal, meal prep can be your friend. But even well-intentioned goals to have produce and protein at the ready can fall by the wayside if your week is thrown a curveball, leaving an abundance of fresh produce or raw chicken spoiling in your fridge. Don’t let this all-too-familiar image scare you into ditching your goals. Instead, lean into convenient options that don’t require a ton of prep work in the kitchen. A good place to start? Canned foods. Canned foods are packed with nutrition and come in handy to make meals happen when time is tight. Past research published in Nutrients found that diets higher in nutrient-dense canned foods (in addition to fresh foods) had a better overall diet quality than those that rarely included canned foods. Specifically, nutrients we tend to fall short on—potassium, fiber and calcium—were consumed in higher amounts by people who incorporated canned foods into their eating plan. Related: Are Canned and Frozen Vegetables Healthier Than Fresh? We checked in with several dietitians to find out which canned foods they recommend for weight loss and weight management. Here are their top picks. Canned Artichoke Hearts Canned artichoke hearts in water are a staple in many kitchens. Artichokes are one of the highest-fiber vegetables on the market, with a half-cup serving of the canned beauties clocking in at 4 grams of filling fiber (or roughly 16% of the Daily Value) and just 35 calories, per the USDA. Remember, fiber helps keep you fuller for longer, minimizing mindless munching between meals. While preparing fresh artichokes can be a bit cumbersome, popping open a can of artichoke hearts is a breeze. Place them in a colander under cool running water to rinse off some of the sodium, and then add to pizza, pasta and egg dishes. We recommend trying our ******* Artichoke Pasta. Canned Beans Arguably one of the most versatile canned products on the market, canned beans continue to be a dietitian’s go-to staple. For reference, ½ cup of ****** beans provides 8 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein, plus micronutrients like iron, calcium and potassium, per the USDA. “Canned beans are a nutrition powerhouse that keep you satisfied long after you’ve eaten,” says Christy Wilson, RDN. While some concerns arise around the sodium content of canned beans, earlier research in the Journal of Culinary Science & Technology shows rinsing canned beans under cool running water can reduce the sodium content by up to 41%. If you’re looking for more inspiration on what to do once you open up that can with a can opener, consider one of these budget-friendly recipes made with canned beans. Canned Corn Contrary to what you may have read online, you do not need to avoid starchy vegetables, like corn, if you are looking to lose weight. “Corn holds up well to canning and can be used to add fiber and color to salads, pizza, sauces and much more,” says Elana Natker, M.S., RDN. Canned corn is available packed in water, making the sodium content negligible for those watching their blood pressure. A half-cup serving of canned corn provides 2 grams of filling fiber and 2.5 grams of protein, as well as other nutrients like potassium, folate and choline, per the USDA. Canned Lentils Canned lentils are a game-changer when it comes to making meals happen fast. “If you don’t feel like cooking lentils from scratch, it’s perfectly fine to use the canned variety. Canned lentils are one of my go-to plant-based proteins because they have protein and are packed with fiber. Those two nutrients keep you full and help with weight-loss goals,” says Natalie Rizzo, M.S., RD, author of Planted Performance. According to the USDA, ½ cup of canned lentils provides about 8 grams of protein and 7 grams of filling fiber. However, because they are often canned with salt, they can have a high sodium content. If you can’t find a product without salt added, Rizzo suggests rinsing them, just as you would canned beans, to reduce their sodium content. Upgrade your lunch salad by popping open a can of lentils and making our Mixed Greens with Lentils & Sliced Apple. Canned Pineapple If you struggle selecting fresh pineapples in the market, then Wilson suggests turning to the canned fruit aisle. “Bright, fresh and always delicious, I know that canned pineapple is a sure shot. It’s sweet, perfectly sliced and ready to eat as a snack or as a nutritious sweet ending to my meal,” says Wilson. Savoring the flavor of naturally sweet fruits can be a great swap if you find yourself craving a sweet snack during the day. While there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of added sugar from a cookie, if your goal is weight loss, finding ways you can satisfy your sweet tooth with a food like fruit can help set you up for success. A half-cup serving of canned pineapple (in water) provides an excellent source of vitamin C, per the USDA. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, two factors that can hamper weight loss, according to a review in the International Journal of Medical Sciences in 2020. Canned Pumpkin While pumpkin may trend during the fall months, Rizzo recommends canned pumpkin year-round for weight loss. “Canned pumpkin is a staple in my pantry. It’s rich in the antioxidant vitamin A, which is known for its role in eye health. And it’s a simple, tasty and healthy addition to soups, sauces and baked goods,” she says, adding that you can use canned pumpkin to swap out some of the oil or butter in baked goods. When picking up your canned pumpkin, you’ll want to look for canned pumpkin that contains 100% pumpkin puree, without added sugars or salt. Incorporate canned pumpkin into your diet with our Pumpkin Overnight Oats. Canned Salmon Convenient and ready to eat, canned salmon is a great go-to protein source. “Canned salmon is a powerful protein that helps keep you full and gives you heart-healthy EPA and DHA omega-3 fats. You don’t want to avoid fats when trying to lose weight, especially not heart- and brain-friendly omega-3s,” says Natker. A 3-ounce portion of canned salmon packs 20 grams of protein alongside those heart-healthy omega-3s, per the USDA. Upping your protein intake is a good idea when trying to lose weight. Studies have evaluated the use of high-protein diets for weight loss, and the results are promising. A 2020 article published in the Journal of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome found that eating high-protein can safely help with weight loss while preserving lean mass (like muscle). Maintaining muscle during weight loss can help you keep weight off long-term. Need some inspiration? Check out these recipes created with a can of salmon. Related: 7 Canned Foods with More Than 7 Grams of Protein per Serving, According to Dietitians Canned Tomatoes A close runner-up in popularity to canned beans are canned tomatoes. “Canned diced tomatoes are a favorite of mine since they’re also versatile,” says Natker. For reference, a half-cup serving of canned tomatoes packed in tomato juice with no added salt has just 20 calories and provides 2 grams of fiber, 1 gram of protein, 12 milligrams of sodium and 3 grams of total sugars (with no added sugars), per the USDA. Canned tomatoes also provide lycopene, an important heart-healthy antioxidant. Canned Tuna Similar to canned salmon, canned tuna is another great protein option to add to your pantry stash. A 3-ounce portion of canned tuna provides 22 grams of high-quality protein as well as calcium, potassium and omega-3 fatty acids, per the USDA. Plus, it’s affordable, easily fitting into many weight-loss meal plan budgets. There are quite a few canned tuna options on the market now, including no-salt-added tuna and tuna packed in oil or water. The best choice to make is the one that meets your goals for weight loss. Tips for Choosing Canned Foods While canned foods can (and should) be part of your kitchen arsenal, dietitians recommend keeping these tips in mind as you stock up and sort through your canned food inventory. Opt for low-sodium or no-salt-added options. Rinse canned foods under cool running water if you are watching your sodium intake. Check the ingredient label. Foods canned with sauce or syrup may include added sugar. Check the expiration date. Canned foods have a long shelf life, but they don’t last forever. Go through the cans you have on hand. Use those with the closest expiration date first, then store them in your pantry using the FIFO (first in, first out) method. Avoid purchasing cans with dents, bulges or cracks of any sort. Eat canned foods only from cans that are sealed, free from dents and smell and look fresh when opened. Related: Do Canned Foods Expire? The Bottom Line Canned foods are a wonderful addition to a balanced diet, whether your goal is weight loss or not. While there are a variety of options to choose from, dietitians recommend stocking up on a variety of canned beans, fish such as canned salmon and tuna, and canned vegetables and fruits, like tomatoes, corn and pumpkin. Dietitians encourage you to get creative with your “cantry” and see what new canned foods will become part of your regular rotation. 25. Hegseth Wants $50,000 for ‘Emergency’ Paint Job to Move into Military Family Housing, Lawmakers Say Hegseth Wants $50,000 for ‘Emergency’ Paint Job to Move into Military Family Housing, Lawmakers Say Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is looking to live in military family housing and requested to use $137,000 in taxpayer funding for repairs — including nearly $50,000 for an “emergency” paint job — a pair of top Democratic lawmakers said in a letter Friday demanding more details. While it is not unprecedented for a defense secretary to live in military housing, it is far more common for them to find private housing. And the reported price tag to fix up Hegseth’s military house comes as rank-and-file service members continue to struggle with crumbling, unsafe living conditions and as the Trump administration has been looking to slash government spending elsewhere. “We know that many service members and their families currently live in unacceptable housing conditions including houses with mold, lead paint, and other hazards,” Democratic Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut said in their letter to Hegseth about his housing. “What commitment will you make to provide service members with a similarly high quality of housing for themselves and their families?” Read Next: Air Force Has Troops Remove Names, Unit Patches from Uniforms During Deportation Flights DeLauro is the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Wasserman Schultz is the ranking member of the panel’s subcommittee in charge of military construction funding. Under the law, Congress must be notified if maintenance and repairs for housing meant for general and flag officers is going to cost more than $35,000. In that context, lawmakers were notified late last month that the Army was looking to spend $137,297 on maintenance on an unoccupied family housing unit, according to Wasserman Schultz and DeLauro’s letter. The total cost included $49,900 for an “emergency” paint job, the letter added. On Wednesday, almost a week after the initial notification, the lawmakers found out Hegseth will be moving into the house that’s being repaired, the letter said. The Pentagon did not respond to Military.com’s requests for comment Friday on the claims in the letter. The apparent urgency to fix up Hegseth’s housing comes as service members have struggled for years with subpar housing and an inability to get timely repairs. A series of 2018 Reuters articles exposed systemic issues with privatized military housing for families such as mold, rodent infestations and shoddy repairs, and military families have continued to report similar issues in the years since. Young enlisted troops in the barracks, too, have faced unsafe living conditions. A 2023 Government Accountability Office report found rampant problems with overflowing sewage, mold, bed bug infestations and squatters. At least one defense secretary has lived in military housing before. Bob Gates lived in a home on a Navy compound in Washington, D.C., when he was defense secretary, Stars and Stripes reported in 2008. Gates was the first defense secretary to live in military housing, according to the news outlet. Most defense secretaries find their own homes. For example, Hegseth’s immediate predecessor, Lloyd Austin, lived in a nearly $3 million, 8,700-square-foot house in Great Falls, Virginia, according to Task and Purpose. When Gates lived in military housing, he paid more than $6,500 in monthly rent. At the time, defense officials expressed concern that he was required to pay more than three times as much as an officer would to live in the same house, because officers only had to pay the amount of their basic allowance for housing, according to Stars and Stripes. The Pentagon did not answer Military.com’s question about whether Hegseth will pay rent and how much. In response to the concerns in 2008, Congress passed a law in that year’s annual defense policy bill saying rent for a defense secretary living in military housing must be 105% of the monthly BAH rate for a four-star general living with dependents in the same area. “The Department of Defense requested this provision in the belief that housing the secretary of defense in established quarters on a secure military installation is far more cost-effective than installing, maintaining and protecting sensitive Department of Defense equipment, along with secure information facilities and security and detection systems, in private residences,” a Senate report about that year’s bill said. The report also said DoD believed that it would reduce disruptions to the public and costs for security protection. Under the law, the rent is supposed to cover “maintenance, protection, alteration, repair, improvement or restoration.” In their letter to Hegseth, Wasserman Schultz and DeLauro also asked about what rent he will pay and whether any other defense secretaries lived in military housing that needed funding to be repaired first. The pair also asked why exactly there needs to be an emergency paint job, as well as for a list of available officers’ housing that doesn’t require as costly maintenance as the house Hegseth is choosing. They requested a response by Feb. 21. The first Trump administration had several scandals involving Cabinet officials and their housing or furnishings. Scott Pruitt, who served as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency at the beginning of the first Trump administration, was forced to resign amid several scandals, including allegations that he got a sweetheart deal to rent a D.C. condo from an energy lobbyist. Mike Pompeo reportedly lived in Army housing when he was secretary of state. According to Politico, he first tried to live in Navy housing, but lawyers for that service called the idea “problematic” and raised “factual, legal, fiscal and ethical” concerns. And Ben Carson, who served as housing and urban development secretary, faced allegations that he misused funds for fancy office furniture, though he was cleared of wrongdoing.
