  1. Is PlayStation Network Down? – How to Check PSN Server Status Is PlayStation Network Down? – How to Check PSN Server Status The PlayStation Network is the critical backbone of Sony’s entertainment infrastructure, supporting tens of millions of gamers worldwide. Today, our digital, ever-connected world depends on these services staying online – and if they go down, players everywhere will panic. In this guide, I’ll teach you how to check the PSN server status in a couple of seconds. If you’re sitting there enjoying a game and suddenly discover you’ve been thrown offline, your first question will be: ‘Is PlayStation Network down?’ That’s just common sense – but it might not be immediately obvious how to check service status of PSN. Read on to learn what you need to do if PlayStation Network is down. Check if PlayStation is Offline The easiest way to know if the PlayStation Network is down is to check the central PSN service status page. This is the most common way gamers will check if the PlayStation Network is offline or experiencing any issues. On the network service status page, you’ll see a breakdown between various services, including: Account management Gaming and social PlayStation Video PlayStation Store PlayStation Direct It might be that one area of the PlayStation Network is down while the rest is online as normal, so make sure the PSN server status page is your first port of call in a suspect outage. How to Check if PSN is Down on Twitter If you want to use Twitter (X) to determine if the PlayStation Network is offline, you’re best off following the ‘Ask PlayStation’ profile. This page is managed directly by Sony PlayStation, but admittedly, it’s not the swiftest solution to get updates on PSN server status issues. Otherwise, you can conduct general searches across social media to see if any gamers are experiencing PlayStation Network outages, or you can use a service like Down Detector to gauge the situation. If the PlayStation Network is down worldwide, you’ll soon know about it. With the way modern gaming solutions work, when the PSN goes offline, you won’t be able to access anything worthwhile on your PlayStation console. It’s a huge pitfall for today’s ever-connected world, and it’s a crux we have to handle as gamers. When was PlayStation Network Down? On February 8, 2025, the PlayStation Network was plunged into darkness for several hours, with gamers worldwide taking to social media to vent their frustration. One of the kickers of this situation was that almost nothing was addressed by Sony, and just a comment was made on social media – and then nothing more for hours. You can read more about this PSN outage here. In October 2024, an outage lasting several hours occurred, with players losing access to every area of the PlayStation Network. Do you have a different way to check if the PlayStation Network is down? Let us know what you do in the comments. 4. Huawei revenue exceeded $118 billion last year, and analysts think the company is showing it’s able to live with U.S. sanctions Huawei revenue exceeded $118 billion last year, and analysts think the company is showing it’s able to live with U.S. sanctions China tech darling Huawei is thriving, having “adapted” to Washington’s sanctions with continued successes in smartphones, EVs, semiconductors and other leading-edge technologies. Huawei’s revenue reached 860 billion yuan ($118.1 billion) in 2024, a 22% increase, according to remarks on Wednesday by chairman Howard Hua Liang. Huawei typically reports its revenue as part of its annual report, released in March. “ICT infrastructure will remain stable, consumer business will return to growth, and the smart car solution business will develop rapidly,” Liang said, according to the Shenzhen Business Daily. The double-digit growth adds to Huawei’s comeback story. Just a few years ago, founder Ren Zhengfei admitted that survival was the company’s primary goal amid U.S. trade sanctions. The U.S. added Huawei to its trade blacklist in 2019, forcing companies to get a license if they wanted to continue doing business with the ******** tech giant. Washington then tightened the screws on Huawei in 2020, and blocked it from getting advanced semiconductors made using U.S. technology or software. “Living with U.S. sanctions won’t be easy, but Huawei has adapted,” says Will Wong, senior research manager at the global market intelligence firm IDC. Still, Huawei hasn’t quite recovered completely from U.S. sanctions. The tech firm’s 2024 revenue is the second-highest in company history, following revenue of 891.1 billion yuan ($122.4 billion) in 2020—the year the U.S. imposed its chip controls. Huawei’s revenue then declined sharply in 2021 and 2022. Part of Huawei’s success has come from its smartphone business. The company re-entered the premium smartphone market in 2023 with its Mate 60 series phone that featured a domestically-produced advanced processor, surprising both analysts and U.S. government officials. Huawei has since released even more smartphones, eating into Apple’s China business. Data released by IDC in late January ranked Huawei as the No. 2 smartphone brand in China by shipments, with 16.6% of the market last year. Apple came in at No. 3, with 15.6%. Huawei’s smartphone business also grew 50% year-on-year, according to the market research firm. “Considering the significant financial contribution of the consumer business segment, a successful return to the smartphone market is important for Huawei,” Wong stresses. Yet Wong explains that the positive impact for Huawei extends beyond just being able to produce high-end smartphones domestically. A “demonstrated ability to survive the U.S. ban” could bring confidence to customers for Huawei’s other business areas—like its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and intelligent vehicles business—Wong says. Story Continues Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, also points out that while Huawei’s consumer electronics are grabbing attention, Huawei is also growing its cloud computing and ICT businesses. “Undoubtedly, the sustained investment in R&D and supply chain restructuring has enabled Huawei’s business to get back on track in the post-sanctions era,” Lam says. Huawei is positioning itself at the forefront of China’s push for tech self-sufficiency. One such area where it’s doing so is in semiconductors and chips. DeepSeek’s most recent AI model reportedly uses Huawei’s Ascend AI chips for inference. Huawei has also developed its own operating system, HarmonyOS, for its devices after being cut off from Google’s Android. Huawei launched HarmonyOS Next in October last year that is completely independent from Android, and companies like Xiaohongshu and Alibaba have developed native apps for that platform. The ******** tech giant has also entered the autos business, and is developing autonomous driving technology for electric carmakers. On Thursday, Liang said that Huawei and GAC Group are working together to provide consumers a better intelligent driving experience. 12. Chuwi UBox mini PC review Chuwi UBox mini PC review Chuwi UBox mini PC: 30-second review The UBox is an entry-level mini PC and a great choice for any home office, and it’s relatively cheap considering the CPU and GPU. The AMD Ryzen 5 6600U and AMD Radeon 660M make a great coupling for everyday work, and what stands out about the UBox is that there’s plenty of scope for upgrades. While the standard RAM is only 16GB, it can be boosted to 64GB. Likewise, the internal storage is a rather paltry 512GB as standard, but this too can be boosted up to 2TB. The machine offers plenty of promise, and the marketing material does make you think that this is going to be an all-out gaming PC, especially with its slightly futuristic looks. But in reality, with the specifications and range of ports available, it is decidedly entry-level. That’s not to say that it’s underpowered. In the office, it’ll run all Windows applications easily, so if you need a mini PC for Word, Excel, or other office applications, including browsing the internet, then this small machine is a great option, especially with its upgrade potential. Likewise, if you’re looking at doing a bit of light editing in CapCut for your social media output, this machine will handle that as well. Similarly, editing images in ACDSee or a similar image editor is well within the capabilities. However, if you start to push the processing or graphics abilities, you will start to see a stutter. Loading Adobe Premiere Pro and importing some 4K footage instantly shows the limitations, especially with a limit on internal storage as standard. However, there is a USB 4 port at the front of the machine for ultrafast connections to external drives. One surprise for a machine of this level is that you can attach up to three 4K monitors, with one plugged into HDMI, one into DP, and the last into the USB port on the front. It’s not the neatest of configurations, but it works. Like many of the best mini PC units I’ve reviewed, when it comes to connectivity options, you have Ethernet options at the back, as well as Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, which offer plenty of connection options around the office. The Chuwi UBox is a great office option with more power than you might expect at this price. However, if you are looking for a mini PC that will enable medium-weight video editing or mid-to-high-end gaming, then that’s asking a bit too much from this machine. Still, considering that this is an entry-level mini PC, its capabilities are exceptionally well-balanced. Chuwi UBox mini PC: Price and availability How much does it cost? £249 / $299 When is it out? Now Where can you get it? Widely available The UBox can be purchased directly from Chuwi by clicking here and is available from many online retailers. (Image credit: Alastair Jennings) Chuwi UBox mini PC: Specs Swipe to scroll horizontally Item Spec CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 6600H GPU: AMD Radeon 660M RAM: 16GB DDR5 Storage: 512TB SSD Front Ports: USB 4.0 Type-C, 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, 3.5mm Audio Jack Rear Ports: USB 2.0 Type-A Port, DC-In, 2× 2.5G LAN, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 Connectivity: LAN 2.5Gbps, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 OS: Windows 11 Pro (pre-installed) Dimensions: 128 x 130.5 x 57mm Accessories VESA Mount Chuwi UBox mini PC: Design Taking this small machine out of the box, the UBox instantly struck me as being nice and compact, measuring just 128 x 57 x 130.5 mm and weighing in at 650 g. It’s not the smallest mini PC compared with many of the latest models, but the design is sleek, and the white plastic finish and detailing on the top of the case really appeal. This detailing is extremely aesthetic but also helps with the cooling system, enabling airflow through the machine from top to bottom where the large cooling fan is positioned. Chuwi has made the design of this mini PC extremely accessible for updates. The top can easily be lifted away to access the RAM and SSD slots, both of which support dual-channel. Everything inside is very neatly laid out, and it’s probably one of the best designs for a mini PC in terms of accessibility and upgradability that I’ve seen recently. Although the actual build quality does feel slightly plasticky, it is really well-built. (Image credit: Alastair Jennings) Looking around the rest of the body, there are four rubber feet on the bottom, which keep the mini PC gripped to the surface and enable airflow through the bottom of the machine. On the front, there’s a large power button, a 3.5mm audio jack socket, a USB Type 4 port, and two USB 3.2 ports. Flipping around to the back, you have two more USB Type-A ports, 3.2 Gen 2 and 2.0, an HDMI 2.0, a DP1.2, and two 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, along with the DC-in. Again, there’s a row of vents at the bottom of the casing to enable further airflow. On the side, there is a Kensington lock so you can secure the mini PC if you leave it in the workplace. Other than that, the mini PC’s size is just about average, possibly slightly ******* than some, and it’s also relatively heavy. I feel that this is one of the best-looking mini PCs I’ve seen in a while. Although it is at the budget end of the market, initial impressions of the build quality and handling are good. (Image credit: Alastair Jennings) Chuwi UBox mini PC: Features With a view to budget users, Chuwi has tried to make the most of entry-level components. To be honest, the AMD 6600H and the AMD Radeon 660M with ray tracing are considered entry-level. Still, the entry-level bar is quite high, and this really does perform well above its weight, considering the pricing. While this small machine has plenty of potential for upgradability, as standard it’s kept simple to keep costs down, with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Both of these can be upgraded with the RAM from 16GB to 64GB with two 32GB sticks sitting in the dual-channel slots. The SSD is a PCIe 3.0 SSD, so the slightly older interface sees dual-channel enabling up to 2TB with two 1TB sticks being used due to the technology restrictions. While entry-level, it does come pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro, which is a really nice touch. Likewise, the monitor connection options, while not the neatest with three different connectors, do enable up to three 4K displays. The USB4 on the front will support 4K@144Hz, while the HDMI and DP will support 4K@120Hz. When it comes to network connectivity, there are two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0. While much is made of this small machine’s performance in the marketing, and while it might be able to handle some ray tracing, don’t consider it to blast through the latest games. If you are playing mid-range games that have ray tracing, then they are going to look great. If you go high-end, then you’ll be disappointed. All things considered, the Ryzen 5 and Radeon 660M are a powerful combo that will require plenty of cooling when put under load. To combat this, the machine packs a large fan at the base, which draws the heat away from the CPU and GPU. Along with the fan, there are heat sinks inside, which should provide plenty of cooling for the small system. (Image credit: Alastair Jennings) Chuwi UBox mini PC: Performance Swipe to scroll horizontally Mini PC Header Cell – Column 1 Header Cell – Column 2 3DMark WildLife 7507 Row 1 – Cell 0 Fire Strike Overall 3414 Row 2 – Cell 0 Fire Strike Graphics 3690 Row 3 – Cell 0 Fire Strike Physics 20547 Row 4 – Cell 0 Fire Strike Combined 1215 Row 5 – Cell 0 Time Spy Overall 1327 Row 6 – Cell 0 Time Spy Graphics 1167 Row 7 – Cell 0 Time Spy CPU 6073 CineBench23 Single 1467 Row 9 – Cell 0 Multi 9954 GeekBench Single 7510 Row 11 – Cell 0 Multi 1964 Row 12 – Cell 0 Compute 13634 CrystalDisk Read MB/s 3272.41MB/s Row 14 – Cell 0 Write MB/s 2839.70MB/s PCMark 10 Office 5928 WEI Row 16 – Cell 1 8.0 The literature for the Chuwi UBox focused heavily on the small machine’s graphic potential, and I was expecting a really high-powered gaming system, especially with the futuristic design. However, while this machine’s performance is good, the pricing pitches it firmly at the entry-level and not high-end gaming. Once you put aside the fact that this isn’t a gaming machine and is a very competent mini PC, the day-to-day performance is undeniably impressive when it comes to Windows. The machine is able to handle most applications with ease. While the PCMark score of 5,928 is lower than many of the scores we’ve seen recently, at this level these scores aren’t at all bad. Which is reflected in the Windows Experience Score of 8, which suggests that it is more than capable of running everyday tasks within Windows. One of the things that really pushes this machine forward is the speed of the SSD. Although, again, this is slightly older technology—being PCIe 3.0—it is still able to achieve transfer rates of up to 3,272MB per second. If you consider that this is actually faster than an Apple M1 Max laptop from three years ago, you can see exactly how much this technology has advanced in that short time. The speed of the SSD helps to boost the overall scores across the rest of the benchmarks, and when it comes to Cinebench, Fire Strike, Time Spy, and Wild Life, it puts in a relatively mid-range performance, showing that most older games will run absolutely fine. But if you really start to push the graphics capability with the likes of Hogwarts Legacy or Cyberpunk 2077, then this system is really going to struggle. When it came to Hogwarts Legacy, for instance, I couldn’t actually get to the loading screen. However, while the higher-end gaming potential might not be there, when it comes to editing video—from 1080p through to basic 4K video in CapCut—this small machine was more than capable of handling short clips, making it an ideal solution if you need a machine for occasional content creation. The strength of this machine is that it can easily handle any office application. If needed, the graphics processor will also enable image and video editing to a certain degree—as long as you don’t push it and don’t expect to edit high-resolution and framerate footage. (Image credit: Alastair Jennings) Chuwi UBox mini PC: Final verdict (Image credit: Alastair Jennings) The Chuwi UBox is great value for money, considering that not long ago, a machine at this price would struggle to run even basic games, and editing images and video would have been beyond its abilities. Now, the UBox happily runs all Windows applications and can edit 1080p video without issue, and just to top it off, it can play entry-level to mid-level games, making it great value for money. The specifications are a bit low out of the box, with only 16GB of RAM and a very small 512GB hard drive. However, with 1TB SSDs now relatively inexpensive, you can get two of those for less than £100/$100. While the RAM will be a more expensive upgrade, it will also provide the biggest performance boost. What I really like about the UBox is that Chuwi has decided to add a USB 4 port on the front. While there is only one, it opens up a whole wealth of opportunities—primarily the ability to plug in an ultra-fast SSD to boost the internal storage if needed. Overall, the UBox is a great option for a very cheap entry-level mini PC with decent power and plenty of upgrade potential. Should I buy the Chuwi UBox mini PC? Swipe to scroll horizontally Value At this price, considering the processor and GPU combo, it is exceptional value for money. 5 Design The futuristic white matte and ****** design really appeal, but it may be a bit niche. 4.5 Features The features are limited, especially when it comes to ports. However, considering its price point, it’s not bad 5 Performance The preformance is better than expected for a machine of this price, able to handle video editing and gaming. 4 Overalls Superb value for money while being specified with plenty of flexibility for its use. 5 Buy it if… Don’t buy it if… For more essential hardware, we’ve reviewed the best business laptops for productivity. 15. Ratings for ships heading to polar waters Ratings for ships heading to polar waters LOOKING BACK & FORWARD Even 15 years ago, travellers mostly sailed to Antarctica in converted ferries built for polar waters, and Russian research ships. I’m looking through a notebook from 2016, when I took a group with me on the Akademik Sergey Vavilov. We crossed the Drake Passage at about eight knots — less than 15km/h. The ship’s “stabilisation” was by pumping huge amounts of water around tanks, but it still rolled. Cabins were basic but comfortable enough, and meals were in what felt more like a fancy crew mess than a restaurant. But many of us who sailed on Akademic Vavilov and Akademic Ioffe, in particular, loved them for their true expedition feel. And this had been the style of sailing to the great white continent since the late 1960s. Lindblad, with whom I am sailing with a new group of readers, has been bringing travellers to Antarctica for more than 50 years. Its ship National Geographic Explorer (on which I have also sailed, and which is still sailing to Antarctica and other remote places) was launched in 2008. It is a refitted coastal Norwegian passenger and ice ferry. It wasn’t until the 2010s that exploration cruise companies began building purpose-designed polar expedition ships from scratch. Some turned to other sectors of the shipping industry — for instance, Lindblad, Quark Expeditions and Aurora Expeditions all have ships with wave-piercing Ulstein X-Bows. Ulstein is still family-owned and run, and has a very good international reputation. It launched its first X-Bow ship in 2005, and orders came in from the oil and gas industry working in rough North Sea waters. Even in these steep seas, the X-Bow splits the energy of a wave, rather than “slapping” down on it like a traditional bow. It massively reduces slamming and pitching (the end-to-end movement of a ship). Even in 8m swells, X-Bow ships are comfortable and can keep up good speed. With a traditional bow, slamming is reduced by reducing speed. But though they might look similar, not all Ulstein X-Bow ships are built (or fitted out) the same, which is why I also explain polar classes. Viking, Scenic, Lindblad and others have also outfitted their expedition ships with Azipods. These are an electric, gearless propeller system. The pods are still fitted under the stern of the ship, but can turn 360 degrees. Not only do they make the ship very manoeuvrable, but they are good at keeping position when stationary, using satellites. They can be very economical, as they just need generators for electricity. Azipods still feel new for the cruise industry, but were developed in the 1980s for ships sailing Finland’s coast. In heavy sea ice, a ship can even reverse at speed with them, with the Azipods deeper than the ice so there’s no damage, and the wash from them flushing the hull so it slides through the ice with “lubrication”. Camera IconBig swell in the Drake Passage, heading north from Antarctica to Ushuaia on the Akademik Sergey Vavilov. Credit: Stephen Scourfield/The West AustralianIMPORTANCE OF ICE RATING Anyone considering an Antarctic cruise should consider ships’ polar rating, as this will be a factor when it comes to where the ship can go. Basically, the better the polar class, the further into the ice a ship can go. Polar Class goes from PC1 to PC7 — and the first thing to remember is PC1 is the top ranking. This is particularly important when you are considering ships that are PC5 and PC6. It might seem a little counterintuitive that PC5 is better than PC6. Most expedition cruise ships that sail in the Antarctic and Arctic are rated PC5, PC6 or PC7. It is the difference between churning through sea ice to make a remote landing, and simply doing “drive-by” viewing from the ship. PC1 Lets start with the grand-daddy of all PC1 ships, Quark Expeditions’ 50 Years of Victory. This is a true ice breaker, built in the Soviet Union, named for Soviet triumphs in World War II. It might have an old-school fit-out, but its two nuclear reactors produce 74,000 horsepower, and it doesn’t need to refuel. It has a spoon-shaped bow that can be pushed through 2.5m of ice. PC2 When we move into PC2, we have Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot, which was launched in 2021. It really is a luxurious icebreaker, designed to reach the North Pole, and usually carries around 200 guests. It has two massive Azipods, each weighing about 300 tonnes. What’s really clever is the ship has a bridge at the stern, too. It can be driven through 3m of ice going forwards, but 15m of ice in reverse, with the Azipods in clear water under the ice, and the wash from the Azipods’ five-blade propellers flushing and lubricating the hull. It has hybrid-electric power, and uses liquid natural gas. PC5 Lindblad National Geographic Resolution and its slightly earlier sister ship Endurance are rated PC5. In practice, the polar classification means the ships can sail all year in medium first-year ice, including past inclusions of multi-year ice. For us passengers, it means they can go further south (or north, in the Arctic), both earlier and later in the season than a PC6 vessel. PC6 Scenic Eclipse I and II, Viking’s Octantis and Polaris, Aurora Expeditions’ Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle, Hurtigruten’s Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, Seabourn’s Venture and Pursuit, and at least six Ponant ships are all rated PC6. This means they can sail main polar destinations in the main parts of the season. In Antarctica, for example, they can sail south of the Antarctic Circle in the middle of the southern summer. THE DRAKE PASSAGE Taken as an average over a long time, the Drake Passage usually has a mean wave height of 4m-5m. It’s a solid 5m at the moment, and even on this good ship with its wave-piercing bow and stabilisers, that can be felt. The Drake Passage is the relatively small 1000km wide “pinch point” between the bottom point of South America and the furthest point north of Antarctica, its peninsula. I like crossing the Drake Passage. It is the entry ticket for the Antarctic Peninsula. It is the frame to the portrait. And it is an interesting environment in its own right — a place of albatrosses and many other seabirds, and whales. But it is also a place many Antarctic travellers fear. Will it be rough? Will it be the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake”, as the crews that cross it regularly call it? The truth is it will mostly be in between. For most people on most modern ships, a 4m swell will not feel too dramatic, but it will usually come from the west, on the beam of the ships sailing north and south. Look for ships which have stabilisers. These are “wings” that can be extended out of the sides of the ship to reduce the roll. They automatically adjust their angle to counteract the rolling motion waves cause. Roll is one of three dimensions of movement on a ship, which has a longitudinal axis, transverse axis and vertical axis. + Roll is the rotation around the bow-to-stern, lengthways axis of a ship. + Pitch is the side-to-side motion around that same axis. + Yaw is rotation around the vertical axis. In other words, the force tries to spin the ship around an invisible middle line, like swivelling on a chair. SILENT NIGHTS & DAYS Lindblad National Geographic Resolution is almost silent, and vibration-free. Yet for all its capabilities as a PC6 ship, inside it is styled like a modern hotel. It cocoons travellers from the raw and remote environment they’re in. Last night was certainly like that after we left Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina, headed down the protected Beagle Channel, and then burst out into the Drake Passage for the 1000km run south to the Antarctic Peninsula. As we left, I took a Phenergan tablet. I don’t get seasick, but still reckon it’s worth taking one tablet in the morning and one at night. Prevention isn’t a bad thing. The single bed in my solo cabin faces across the ship, feet towards the big glass sliding door, and I am gently rocked in my cradle of crisp, white cotton. But, during the night, quite a lot of people succumb to seasickness, keeping the ship’s very capable Dr David Sugarman busy. Many of the people on the ship are taking meclizine, which is supplied in a bowl on a reception — two chewable tablets in a tiny paper envelope — a day’s dose. There are also bowls of ginger chews around the ship, and ginger tea is being made behind the bar. But when people start vomiting, the doctor turns to Zofran, and then to an injection, to stop it. The Drake Passage is calm, with just 3m of swell, and the ship maintains 15 knots (a good speed of 28km/h). Its tranquil interior belies the place we are in. I put on four layers (the top two are the puffer liner and orange jacket given to travellers by Lindblad), climb the stairs to deck eight, and step outside. One of the outstanding features of the Endurance is the amount of deck space it has. There are just over 100 guests on this voyage, and there is so much space I can always feel like a lone wandering albatross out here. The sea is roaring, swell is coming in on the quarter, and spume is flying in the air — white froth blowing off the tops of waves with more peak. The calmness within gives a small hint to the place we’re in. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Stabilisers These are “wings” that can be put out of each side to stop reduce roll. They maximise lift (which minimises drag) and greatly reduce any rolling. Zero speed stabilisers These are increasingly being built into cruise ship hulls to give more stability when the ship stops. It “treads water” as a computer system moves the stabilisers up and down to counteract the effect of wind and swell. Ulstein X-Bow Comfortable in rough seas, and reduces noise and vibration. It gives dry decks and improves fuel efficiency. Power Some engines run on low-sulphur marine gas oil. Some have heat recovery systems. Some have SCR catalysts to reduce emissions. It’s worth considering the power source if you are considering your carbon footprint. Azipods This is a gearless steerable propulsion system. The electric drive motor is in a pod under the hull. Azipods can rotate 360 degrees, increasing manoeuvrability and efficiency, and have been calculated to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent compared to conventional shaft-and-propeller systems. Bow thrusters These are “in-line” propellers which push the bow from side to side, greatly improving low-speed manoeuvrability. Dynamic positioning A computer system uses satellite locator feeds and interacts with the ship’s propulsion system to keep it in place rather than anchoring. 16. San Francisco cannabis shop owner shot 7 times closing business to recover San Francisco cannabis shop owner shot 7 times closing business to recover The Brief Martin Olive said he doesn’t recall having prior interactions with the man who shot him seven times outside his cannabis shop. The suspect, Cheasarak Chong, was killed during a standoff with police after firing at officers. Olive said he is closing his cannabis shop to focus on his recovery. SAN FRANCISCO – A San Francisco man who was shot seven times outside his South of Market cannabis shop recalled the horrific attack. No prior interactions What we know Martin Olive said he remembered the gunman pulling out a weapon and firing at him. However, he is choosing to focus on those who have rallied to his side following the shooting. The shooting outside Olive’s cannabis dispensary was a shock even in the sometimes troubled South of Market neighborhood. Olive, founder of the Vapor Room, said he was outside leaning against a bike rack when a man he didn’t remember having previous interactions with got off an e-bike, pulled a gun and pointed it at him. ‘My life changed forever’ What they’re saying “Then I realized the severity of what was happening, and I put my hands up and I, sort of tried to dodge what was impending,” said Olive. “Very clearly aimed at my head. Two shots that hit me in the cheek. One went up and hit my earlobe, the top of my ear. The other open split my cheek down here and split my earlobe and then that was the moment that reality became a whole different thing and my life changed forever.” Olive said he remembers the gun going off repeatedly; two shots grazing his cheek and hitting his ear, two more in his back. In all, he suffered seven gunshot wounds. Olive credits first responders and excellent medical care with saving his life, including bystanders like the woman who used her shirt to apply pressure to his wounds. “Literally the shirt off her back and she happened to be a nurse,” said Olive. “She was like an angel. The first angel that I encountered through this entire process, and there have been many.” Suspect killed during standoff What we know Police said the gunman, 34-year-old Cheasarak Chong, made his way to his apartment above the Vapor Room after shooting Olive. After a standoff with officers in which he fired at police, Chong was shot dead. Olive said he’d heard Chong obtained the guns legally. Olive said he doesn’t recall ever seeing or interacting with Chong, who had previously been acquitted of attempted ******* in 2018. Olive said before he learned that Chong was dead, he worried he might have to face him again someday. “He didn’t hesitate one second to end my life, to attempt to end my life,” said Olive. “I feel safer that I don’t have to worry about him now or in the future.” Olive is facing a long recovery with gunshot injuries to his cheek and ear, a broken jaw, some facial paralysis, a broken scapula, and numerous cracked ribs. He said he’s also coping with nightmares and PTSD following the unprovoked attack. Olive said he’s focusing on his recovery and is thankful to those around him who have rallied to his side. “I’m sort of open to the universe offering me some more blessings and shining some light on other paths I can take or where my next path is. I’m open to what can happen,” he said. For now, Olive is shuttering the Vapor Room to focus on his recovery. Friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover his living expenses and mounting medical bills. The community around him, which includes his friends and employees, wished him well and a speedy recovery. The Source Information for this story comes from an interview with the victim, Martin Olive, along with previous reporting. 17. We Have No Idea How Kanye West Spent 119 Hours in The Last of Us 1 and Still Couldn’t Complete It We Have No Idea How Kanye West Spent 119 Hours in The Last of Us 1 and Still Couldn’t Complete It Video games have had more and more influence over the years. And with the success of adaptations like Fallout, Arcane, and The Last of Us (TLOU), games are getting more and more new players, especially among celebrities. One celebrity who has made his love for Naughty Dog’s games is Kanye West. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West | image: Cosmopolitan ***, licensed under CC-BY-3.0, via Wikimedia Commons The singer recently admitted on Instagram that TLOU Part 2 was the best game ever made, and we’ve also spotted in a recent interview that he had 119 hours on Part 1. What’s weird is that despite having more than double the duration of the game in terms of playtime, he never finished it 100%. Kanye West has more than a hundred hours on The Last of Us It is a remarkable game so we’re not surprised. | Image Credit: Naughty Dog The shot from Laboy’s interview shows Kanye standing in front of a TV displaying his playtime in The Last of Us, confirming that he has spent nearly 120 hours in the game without fully completing it. Around the 24 minute mark, a TV screen behind Kanye shows that he has played for 119 hours but only reached 92% completion. 119h but 92% ? what did he do all those time — lauryn (@laurynchrp) February 7, 2025 His play time is pretty questionable given that a typical playthrough of the game takes around 15 hours. Even a 100% run usually doesn’t take more than 25 hours for the average player. Fans online think he might have been exploring every inch of the world, while others joked that he was simply leaving the game on pause for hours. Regardless of the reason complete the first game, Kanye West has already moved on to The Last of Us Part 2, and he isn’t shy about his love for it. On January 1, 2025, he posted an Instagram story calling it the “best game ever made.” The post featured gameplay footage of him stuck on Seattle Day 3 while playing in Survivor+ mode, one of the most challenging difficulties. Only One Video Game – Kanye West In 2015, Kanye wanted to create a video game in honor of his late mother, Donda West. The concept of the game was guiding his mother to the gates of heaven. It later fell through due to funding & Kanye’s hospitalization at the time. pic.twitter.com/6bZ2pFOlJQ — kcN (@KcnYzy) January 8, 2024 West has been a public gamer over the years. He has referenced video games and anime in his music, and at one point, he even tried to develop his own game. In 2015, he announced Only One, a game inspired by his late mother, Donda, where players would play as her going through heaven. He isn’t the first celeb gamer to like TLOU though The HBO series has really made it mainstream. | Image Credit: Naughty Dog You won’t be surprised to hear that Kanye West isn’t the only celebrity to have praised the game. It’s very likely that the success of the HBO adaptation got a lot of new players, including celebrities. But that aside, we’ve seen numerous high-profile figures be fans of the game from Zendaya to Zayn Malik. One Direction star Zayn Malik recently celebrated his 32nd birthday with a The Last of Us-themed cake. We can expect even more fans as time passes. The HBO series is also getting a second season soon, so we can expect more news like this in the coming future. Regardless of how big he is a fan of The Last of Us, West’s 119 hours to 92% completion ratio is now a meme among fans. Will he ever complete the first game fully? Or is he like us gamers and just moving on with Part 2? What do you think of West’s declaration? Let us know in the comments! 18. Extreme Arctic Warming Sees North Pole Temperatures Rise Above Freezing Extreme Arctic Warming Sees North Pole Temperatures Rise Above Freezing A dramatic rise in temperature was recorded at the North Pole, with levels surpassing the freezing point due to an extreme winter warming event. Reports indicate that temperatures climbed 20 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, raising concerns among climate scientists about its impact on Arctic ice loss and long-term warming trends. The event, which occurred over the weekend, is said to be among the most extreme instances of winter warming recorded in the region. Warming Near The North Pole As reported by the Guardian, temperatures at the North Pole exceeded 0 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed the significant warming trend, while an Arctic snow buoy logged a temperature reading of 0.5 degrees Celsius. Mika Rantanen, a researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, told the Guardian that although estimating exact temperature variations in remote Arctic locations remains difficult, models suggest a deviation of more than 20 degrees Celsius. Weather system over Iceland linked to Arctic temperature rise Julien Nicolas, a senior scientist at the Copernicus Climate Change Service, told the Guardian that a deep low-pressure system near Iceland was responsible for directing warm air toward the Arctic. The phenomenon was further amplified by warm sea temperatures in the northeastern Atlantic. Nicolas stated that while such weather events are rare, further analysis is required to determine their frequency. Historical precedents and climate change concerns Previous instances of extreme Arctic warming have been recorded. In December 2016, temperatures at the North Pole reached approximately 32 degrees Fahrenheit during a winter heatwave. Studies indicate that the Arctic is warming at a rate nearly four times faster than the rest of the world, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. The loss of reflective sea ice accelerates warming by increasing the absorption of solar energy. Indigenous communities and Arctic wildlife, including polar bears and whales, are particularly vulnerable to these changes, which threaten their habitats and long-term survival. 21. ‘Sticky prices’ in the services sector is giving the Fed headaches ‘Sticky prices’ in the services sector is giving the Fed headaches President Trump’s tariff push is one of the many things the Federal Reserve will have to contend with as it battles to bring down inflation. Andrew Levin, former Federal Reserve adviser and Dartmouth College professor, joins Market Domination hosts Josh Lipton and Julie Hyman to note the Fed closely monitors “sticky prices” in the service sector — which remain about 1-1.5% above pre-pandemic levels, he says. Levin explains, “The Fed has to make sure that it comes all the way back to the target.” He explains that the Fed may have a long battle ahead that could require the central bank to have “moderately tight policy for quite a while to come.” Watch the video above to hear what Levin has to say about the Trump administration’s focus on bringing down the 10-year Treasury yield. 23. Kylie Minogue: What to expect when pop icon launches world Tension Tour at Perth’s RAC Arena on February 15 Kylie Minogue: What to expect when pop icon launches world Tension Tour at Perth’s RAC Arena on February 15 What do nostalgic rockers R.E.M. and Aussie icon Kylie Minogue have in common? They‘ll be two of the biggest musical acts to have ever launched world tours in Perth when the singer opens her Tension Tour 2025 here on Saturday. International artists choosing Australia’s west coast to catapult their jaunt around the globe is rare. While the Losing My Religion hit-makers kick-started their global campaign in 1995 at Perth Entertainment Centre, it’ll be RAC Arena hosting the pop goddess in her first of 10 *********** performances. The appearance will be her first in Perth since lighting up Sir James Mitchell Park in 2019 during her Golden Tour. Departing our shores for Asia and beyond in March, Kylie will take the stage at least 70 more times before wrapping up in August with a finale in Mexico. Set to celebrate her Tension and Tensions II albums of 2023 and 2024, respectively, the global campaign will consolidate the 56-year-old’s currency as a contemporary recording artist in the latter stages of a career that has traversed five separate decades — and counting. Kylie’s recent projects mark her eighth and ninth chart-topping ARIA albums, punctuated by the anthemic hit Padam Padam which won her a Grammy for best pop dance recording in 2023. January 13, 1995 Credit: Mal Fairclough/The West *********** And while she’s consistently re-invented herself, the effervescent export has never forgotten how to pull a crowd. Dropping a second wave of tickets on Thursday for all national shows, local fans had vacuumed up every corner of RAC Arena’s allotment by mid-afternoon, amid public debate about NBL side Perth Wildcats having to move a home final because Kylie locked in the arena first. “It’s been a while since Kylie has had the opportunity to start a tour at home in Australia so she’s excited Perth will host the very first show of the Tension Tour,” Matt Gudinski, chief executive of entertainment collective Mushroom Group, told The Sunday Times. Given Minogue’s international fan base, scores of fans will be keenly focused on RAC Arena next week to see what the tour has in store. Mr Gudinski couldn’t give too much away about the show but promised “fans are in for a treat!” Little has been revealed of the tour’s themes or set list, but one detail the promoter did confirm as recently as Thursday was the pop stalwart’s supporting act. Camera IconPop icon Kylie Minogue has announced Mallrat as her supporting act for the Aussie leg of her 2025 Tension Tour. Credit: Frontier Touring Brisbane singer Mallrat, 26, will feature as a guest on all national shows, which may come as a surprise to long-time Kylie fans who expected a more established Aussie artist to warm up the crowd. “Kylie was keen to offer the opportunity for a fellow *********** female artist to join her on tour,” Mr Gudinski said of the decision. But her selection was no fluke. A staple of the domestic indie scene, Mallrat has featured several times on Triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown, including in 2019 with hit Charlie, and has shared stages with the likes of Post Malone and The Chainsmokers. She’s young, cool, and relevant to an audience that lives online — one Minogue really cares about harnessing. “About to get a PHD in pop princessery,” Mallrat told fans on Instagram after the news was made public. Since Padam Padam went viral on TikTok in 2023, the next generation of music consumers have connected with Kylie’s sounds, danced to her beat — and are jumping on the bandwagon. (Minogue has recounted young fans recently telling her they really liked her “new” song The Loco-Motion — which she released in 1987). Continuing on the trend last year, she released My Oh My with stars Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo. She also performed live with expressive country singer Orville *****, and producer Diplo — tastemakers who don’t necessarily fit the “youth” tag but are influential to the audiences they appeal to and culture at large. Camera IconMallrat will support Kylie in Australia. Credit: Frontier Touring However, the real question on fans’ lips is: What will we actually see from Minogue in Perth? The star herself has teased it’ll be “all killer, no filler”. “There are 37 years of songs to play with and heaps of new stuff,” she said last year. The early 90s saw her embrace a punk-rock aesthetic through a ****** fishnet suit, and 10 years later she was sighted in a futuristic silver ensemble symbolic of the turn of the century. In 2011, her Aphrodite Les Folies tour gave rise to a golden goddess motif featuring a pearly headpiece. Kylie’s looks have always been indicative of the music she’s released, and the musical mood she’s in. Judging by her two most recent albums, we should expect a party hosted by a party girl. During the star’s most notable 2024 gig, where she headlined London’s BST Hyde Park, the performer opted for a classic red leather suit and a silver-tasselled ****** number. A promising sign for fans young and old, the same performance saw her belt out more than 20 tracks, encompassing each of her spellbinding eras. By that logic, Perth can expect classics like Can’t Get You Out of My Head, and On a Night Like This. And you can be sure Kylie’s electro-pop single Tension will be a heavy feature. As she’s already told fans, “I will be calling Lights, Camera, Action … and there will be a whole lot of Padaming!” Source link #Kylie #Minogue #expect #pop #icon #launches #world #Tension #Tour #Perths #RAC #Arena #February Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
