NEOWISE, the NASA mission that cataloged objects around Earth for over a decade, has come to an end
The NASA project NEOWISE, which has given astronomers a detailed view of near-Earth objects – some of which could strike the Earth – ended its mission and burned on reentering the atmosphere after over a decade.
On a clear night, the sky is full of bright objects – from stars, large planets and galaxies to tiny asteroids flying near Earth. These asteroids are commonly known as near-Earth objects, and they come in a wide variety of sizes. Some are tens of kilometers across or larger, while others are only tens of meters or smaller.
On occasion, near-Earth objects smash into Earth at a high speed – roughly 10 miles per second (16 kilometers per second) or faster. That’s about 15 times as fast as a rifle’s muzzle speed. An impact at that speed can easily damage the planet’s surface and anything on it.
Impacts from large near-Earth objects are generally rare over a typical human lifetime. But they’re more frequent on a geological timescale of millions to billions of years. The best example may be a 6-mile-wide (10-kilometer-wide) asteroid that crashed into Earth, killed the dinosaurs and created Chicxulub crater about 65 million years ago.
Smaller impacts are very common on Earth, as there are more small near-Earth objects. An international community effort called planetary defense protects humans from these space intruders by cataloging and monitoring as many near-Earth objects as possible, including those closely approaching Earth. Researchers call the near-Earth objects that could collide with the surface potentially hazardous objects.
The NEOWISE mission started its operations in 2010 as part of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, WISE, mission. It continued investigating near-Earth objects such as asteroids and comets – even after running out of its cryogenic coolant – until February 2011. After two years of hibernation, the mission reactivated and continued operating from December 2013 until 2024.
NEOWISE contributed to planetary defense efforts with its research to catalog near-Earth objects. Over the past decade, it helped planetary defenders like us and our colleagues study near-Earth objects.
NASA’s NEOWISE mission, the spacecraft for which is shown here, surveyed for near-Earth objects. NASA/JPL-CaltechDetecting near-Earth objects
NEOWISE was a game-changing mission, as it revolutionized how to survey near-Earth objects.
The NEOWISE mission continued to use the spacecraft from NASA’s WISE mission, which ran from late 2009 to 2011 and conducted an all-sky infrared survey to detect not only near-Earth objects but also distant objects such as galaxies.
The spacecraft orbited Earth from north to south, passing over the poles, and it was in a Sun-synchronous orbit, where it could see the Sun in the same direction over time. This position allowed it to scan all of the sky efficiently.
The spacecraft could survey astronomical and planetary objects by detecting the signatures they emitted in the mid-infrared range.
Humans’ eyes can sense visible light, which is electromagnetic radiation between 400 and 700 nanometers. When we look at stars in the sky with the naked eye, we see their visible light components.
However, mid-infrared light contains waves between 3 and 30 micrometers and is invisible to human eyes.
When heated, an object stores that heat as thermal energy. Unless the object is thermally insulated, it releases that energy continuously as electromagnetic energy, in the mid-infrared range.
This process, known as thermal emission, happens to near-Earth objects after the Sun heats them up. The smaller an asteroid, the fainter its thermal emission. The NEOWISE spacecraft could sense thermal emissions from near-Earth objects at a high level of sensitivity – meaning it could detect small asteroids.
But asteroids aren’t the only objects that emit heat. The spacecraft’s sensors could pick up heat emissions from other sources too – including the spacecraft itself.
To make sure heat from the spacecraft wasn’t hindering the search, the WISE/NEOWISE spacecraft was designed so that it could actively cool itself using then-state-of-the-art solid hydrogen cryogenic cooling systems.
Operation phases
Since the spacecraft’s equipment needed to be very sensitive to detect faraway objects for WISE, it used solid hydrogen, which is extremely cold, to cool itself down and avoid any noise that could mess with the instruments’ sensitivity. Eventually the coolant ran out, but not until WISE had successfully completed its science goals.
During the cryogenic phase when it was actively cooling itself, the spacecraft operated at a temperature of about -447 degrees Fahrenheit (-266 degrees Celsius), slightly higher than the universe’s temperature, which is about -454 degrees Fahrenheit (-270 degrees Celsius).
The cryogenic phase lasted from 2009 to 2011, until the spacecraft went into hibernation in 2011.
Following the hibernation *******, NASA decided to reactivate the WISE spacecraft under the NEOWISE mission, with a more specialized focus on detecting near-Earth objects, which was still feasible even without the cryogenic cooling.
During this reactivation phase, the detectors didn’t need to be quite as sensitive, nor the spacecraft kept as cold as it was during the cryogenic cooling phase, since near-Earth objects are closer than WISE’s faraway targets.
The consequence of losing the active cooling was that two long-wave detectors out of the four on board became so hot that they could no longer function, limiting the craft’s capability.
Nevertheless, NEOWISE used its two operational detectors to continuously monitor both previously and newly detected near-Earth objects in detail.
NEOWISE’s legacy
As of February 2024, NEOWISE had taken more than 1.5 million infrared measurements of about 44,000 different objects in the solar system. These included about 1,600 discoveries of near-Earth objects. NEOWISE also provided detailed size estimates for more than 1,800 near-Earth objects.
Despite the mission’s contributions to science and planetary defense, it was decommissioned in August 2024. The spacecraft eventually started to fall toward Earth’s surface, until it reentered Earth’s atmosphere and burned up on Nov. 1, 2024.
NEOWISE’s contributions to hunting near-Earth objects gave scientists much deeper insights into the asteroids around Earth. It also gave scientists a better idea of what challenges they’ll need to overcome to detect faint objects.
So, did NEOWISE find all the near-Earth objects? The answer is no. Most scientists still believe that there are far more near-Earth objects out there that still need to be identified, particularly smaller ones.
To carry on NEOWISE’s legacy, NASA is planning a mission called NEO Surveyor. NEO Surveyor will be a next-generation space telescope that can study small near-Earth asteroids in more detail, mainly to contribute to NASA’s planetary defense efforts. It will identify hundreds of thousands of near-Earth objects that are as small as about 33 feet (10 meters) across. The spacecraft’s launch is scheduled for 2027.
This article was updated on Feb. 7, 2024, to clarify the starting year of the NEOWISE mission.

With Players Hitting Gold Cap and Using Runes to Trade, Diablo 4’s Economy Is as Good as Ruined Thanks to Multiple Duplication Exploits
With Players Hitting Gold Cap and Using Runes to Trade, Diablo 4’s Economy Is as Good as Ruined Thanks to Multiple Duplication Exploits
Diablo 4 was considered as the “magnum opus of Blizzard” according to the internet. The title made by Blizzard received universal acclaim when it was first released in June of 2023. The game had generated around $666 million after the first week of its launch and crossed a billion dollars in revenue as of October 2024.
Diablo 4 was Blizzard’s magnum opus | Image Credits: Blizzard Entertainment
Diablo 4 is an ARPG where players have to level up bit by bit and obtain stronger equipment by defeating increasingly difficult enemies. The 2023 title was commended for its procedurally generated dungeons, atmosphere, storytelling, etc. But a few months after release, the entire in-game economy was and still is in shambles. How did the economy ****** in an online RPG game? Let’s find out.
What happened to Diablo 4’s economy?
Diablo 4‘s main transaction and trading currency is gold which players can get by completing quests, defeating elite enemies, opening gold chests, etc. During August of 2023, a duplication exploit was found in the game that would duplicate stacks of selected items including gold. This became a huge problem as Diablo 4 has an in-game economy of its own.
Gold is invaluable now in the current in-game economy | Image Credits: Blizzard Entertainment
The whole charade occurred three times with the most recent one being in August of 2024. Blizzard had to suspend trading items in the game due to items selling for more than millions and billions of gold in the game. Back then, on Blizzard’s blog page, Adam Fletcher the director of Diablo said that they will be suspending any and all forms of in-game trades until they find a fix to the duplication exploit.
We will be disabling trading in Diablo IV while we investigate a possible duplication issue. We apologize for the disruption and will provide updates on when we will have trading available again once we further investigate and identify any issues we need to resolve.
The suspension was later removed in the same month after the duplication exploit was settled, but the damage was already done.
These suspensions to trades and bug fixes were like a garden hose sprinkling water on a forest fire. By the third time of the duplication exploit, the economy was already on fire to the point it was impossible for a bounceback. Hence, players found a new way to trade in-game which is through runes.
Are Runes a viable alternative to gold?
Runes are being used as an alternative to gold | Image Credits: Blizzard Entertainment
Runes are a special type of socketable items that trigger powerful effects by buffing the players. They can be found in the endgame through Nightmare Dungeons, Whisper caches, and Tormented bosses. These Runes offer the players stat buffs and can trigger skills from different classes. These features ensured the players that Runes are a better alternative to coins which hold no value in the current economy of the game.
Using these duplication exploits, players were quickly able to acquire the maximum gold limit of 9 trillion. Even after Blizzard raised the cap to 99 trillion, players quickly reached that as well, ultimately breaking the in-game economy.
These exploits are evidence of how fragile MMO and live service economies are. Any vulnerability or bug that lets the players in the game duplicate an item in the game can instantly destabilize the economy. Although Blizzard did the right thing by stopping trades as soon as possible when the exploit was found, the issue remains a significant flaw in the game that has permanently destroyed the gold economy in Diablo 4.

NASA’s PUNCH Mission Set to Track the Sun’s Corona and Solar Wind in 3D
NASA’s PUNCH Mission Set to Track the Sun’s Corona and Solar Wind in 3D
A new space mission designed to study the Sun’s outer atmosphere and track space weather in three dimensions is set to launch this month. NASA’s Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission, consisting of four small satellites, is scheduled to be sent into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on February 27. This mission aims to investigate the transformation of the Sun’s corona into the solar wind, the stream of charged particles that extends throughout the solar system. The data collected could improve understanding of solar wind dynamics and space weather forecasting, which has implications for Earth’s power grids and satellites.
Mission Objectives and Scientific Goals
According to reports, PUNCH is the first initiative specifically designed to bridge the gap between solar physics and solar wind physics. The mission will study how the Sun’s outer atmosphere transitions into the heliosphere—a vast region shaped by the solar wind that encases the solar system. Joe Westlake, Director of NASA’s Heliophysics Division, stated that this mission will provide a continuous observation of the Sun’s corona and its influence on space weather.
How PUNCH Works
PUNCH will consist of four satellites working together to create 3D observations of the heliosphere. Craig DeForest, the mission’s principal investigator at the Southwest Research Institute, explained that three of these satellites will be equipped with wide-field imagers to capture detailed views of solar wind structures. A fourth satellite, developed by the Naval Research Laboratory, will use a narrow-field imager to create an artificial total solar eclipse, allowing continuous monitoring of the Sun’s corona in high definition.
Advancements in Space Weather Forecasting
This mission is expected to enhance space weather forecasting by enabling real-time tracking of solar storms. According to Nicholeen Viall, a mission scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, PUNCH’s ability to capture polarized light will allow scientists to determine the 3D location of solar wind structures. This could improve predictions of geomagnetic storms, which have the potential to impact satellites and power infrastructure on Earth.
Collaboration with Other Solar Missions
NASA has confirmed that PUNCH will complement the Parker Solar Probe, which is currently making direct observations of the Sun’s corona. Together, these missions will provide a comprehensive dataset spanning vast scales, offering unprecedented insights into how solar wind originates and interacts with the heliosphere. DeForest added that an additional outcome of PUNCH will be the creation of the most extensive polarimetric star map, covering over three-quarters of the visible sky.

The five best-selling EVs of 2024
The five best-selling EVs of 2024
Electric vehicle (EV) sales continue to rise in Australia, and while there weren’t too many movements among the sales favourites in 2024, there are a handful of models which are staking their claim in the market.
You won’t be surprised to find Tesla still topped the EV sales charts, but there are still a healthy group of more affordable options from ******** brands rising up the ranks each year.
If you’re in the market for an EV, this article is intended to be an overview of what Australians are buying while providing a brief overview of what you can expect from each of the five best-selling models available right now.
For context, there were a total of 91,292 electric passenger vehicles sold in Australia in 2024, up 4.7 per cent on 2023. These figures are based on data collated by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council.
A snapshot of all the best-selling EVs in Australia in 2024 was published earlier this year, and you can read it here.

Tesla Model Y
The omnipresent Model Y topped the EV sales charts in 2024, chalking up a sizeable 21,253 deliveries by year’s end.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
Though there is a facelifted Model Y arriving this year following months of rumours throughout 2024, buyers still only had the option of three different variants of Tesla’s only SUV in Australia to choose from.
Multiple rounds of price cuts early in the year left the model at a price range of $55,900 to $82,900 before on-roads.
At the bottom is the Model Y RWD, which as the name suggests is rear-wheel drive only with maximum power outputs of up to 220kW for a 0-100km/h time of 6.9 seconds. Tesla, unlike almost every other manufacturer, doesn’t quote full performance or efficiency figures, though the RWD has a claimed WLTP range of 455km.
As such it’s estimated the RWD has a 60kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack compared to the likely 79kWh lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit found in the remaining two variants.
The first of those two is the Long Range AWD, which is all-wheel drive, produces up to 378kW of power, and can go from 0-100km/h in 5.0 seconds with a claimed WLTP range of 533km.
At the top of the range is the Model Y Performance AWD, which bumps outputs to 393kW for a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds while trimming WLTP range to 514km. Tesla backs its SUV with a four-year, 80,000km warranty in Australia, while its battery pack is covered for eight years or 160,000km.

Tesla Model 3
The second half of Tesla’s *********** one-two punch is the Model 3, which ranked second in 2024 with 17,094 sales but remained well clear of the competition.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
Its only change of late was the introduction of the ‘Highland’ update in late 2023, but like the Model Y it’s only available in three variants that range in price from $54,900 to $80,900 before on-roads.
The range-opening variant is the RWD, powered by a 208kW electric motor for a 0-100km/h time of 6.1 seconds. It’s fed by a 60kWh LFP battery for a claimed WLTP range of 513km.
Next is the Long Range AWD, which adds a second electric motor for a total power output of 366kW, helping it from 0-100km/in 4.4 seconds. Unlike the RWD it features a 79kWh NMC battery pack and has a claimed WLTP range of 629km.
Topping the range is the Performance AWD, which outputs a colossal 461kW of power for a 0-100km/h time of just 3.1 seconds. It uses the same battery as the Long Range AWD, but WLTP range is reduced to 528km.
Like the Model Y it’s backed by a four-year, 80,000km warranty, while the battery is covered by an eight-year, 160,000km warranty (eight years,192,000km for the Long Range and Performance).

There are six variants in the MG 4 lineup, which currently ranges in price from $34,990 drive-away to $55,990 before on-road costs – thanks to a deal in place now until February 28 for the base-spec Excite 51. Typical pricing is $37,990 before on-roads.
That base model is powered by a rear-mounted motor with 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque, with energy coming from a 51kWh battery for a WLTP range of 350km. All MG 4 models use lithium-ion batteries.
Three MG 4 variants utilise a 64kWh battery, two of which are the Excite 64 and Essence 64 with WLTP ranges of 450km and 435km respectively, but the same outputs of 150kW and 250Nm. The third is the range-topping XPower, which is the only AWD MG 4 and produces 320kW and 600Nm with a claimed range of 400km.
The longest-travelling variant is the Long Range 77, which uses a 77kWh battery for a claimed WLTP range of 530km. MG backs its lineup with a 10-year, 250,000km warranty, which includes its battery.

Storms headed to Southern California next week likely to pack a ******* punch
Storms headed to Southern California next week likely to pack a ******* punch
The second of two relatively mild storms is moving out of Southern California Friday but a much larger system appears to be building in the Pacific.
The moderate rain totals from this week’s storms have helped the Los Angeles burn zones remain relatively stable, but early indicators have the National Weather Service warning that a “significant storm” could hit around the middle of next week.
“I would anticipate that next week we’re going to be talking about some pretty decent storms moving through, and that of course would pose a major threat to those burn areas,” KTLA meteorologist Henry DiCarlo said.
At this point, the Weather Service believes the region will see between one and two inches of rain along our coasts and valleys with mountain and foothill areas expected to get from two to four inches.

“I do think the numbers for next week’s storms will be pumped up a little bit. I think they’re a little undervalued. We’re looking at some decent rain,” DiCarlo said.
The most aggressive forecast model right now shows up to three inches of rain hitting the Los Angeles area, the Weather Service stated.
Snow is also likely to fall at lower elevations when the storms begin to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.
“The mountain forecast shows colder temperatures. This will be more of a classic, cold winter storm,” Henry said.

Life lessons she taught Gen Z from self-acceptance to the power of granny pants
Life lessons she taught Gen Z from self-acceptance to the power of granny pants
Yasmin Rufo and Noor Nanji
BBC News

Your 20s are a whirlwind of bad dates, career crises, and wondering if you’ll ever really get your life together.
Enter Bridget Jones, the queen of chaotic charm, who has been stumbling through life lessons since before many of us can remember.
Despite the original Bridget Jones’s Diary book being released in 1996 and the film in 2001, it seems the floundering and flawed heroine has captivated the hearts of Gen Z, who weren’t born when Helen Fielding’s novel was first published.
Fielding says she finds it “comforting” that women in their 20s have a real interest in Bridget’s trials and tribulations. At her book signings, she says “half the audience are Gen Zs”.
From navigating embarrassing work mishaps to realising that self love (and maybe an extra glass of Chardonnay) is the key to happiness, Bridget has been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale.
Ahead of the release of the new film Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy next week, we’ve been speaking to three women in their 20s about the life lessons the character taught them: Sophie Gwillym from Cardiff, 28, Hannah Booth in Chester, 25, and 27-year-old Sophie Tyler from Yorkshire.
And then there’s us – Yasmin and Noor – both fans of the franchise who have a lot to say about it.
When did you discover Bridget Jones?
Yasmin: In the summer before high school, I stole a tattered copy of Bridget Jones’s Diary from my parents’ bookshelf and read it all in one night hidden under my duvet. To me, it was a ****** for adult life, which, being on the edge of puberty and going into year seven, felt like a total must-read. Almost all of it went over my head at that age but one thing stuck with me: Bridget Jones felt like a real woman who, unlike other perfect heroines that featured in many stories that were actually aimed at children, was flawed and nuanced.
Noor: I was at school and I remember my English teacher talking about one of the films. She was refusing to go see it, as she felt the whole premise was completely unrealistic (“As if such a beautiful, competent woman would be struggling to find love”). But my older sister was going, so I tagged along and it was love at first sight plus I’ll admit I fancied Hugh Grant just a bit.
Sophie T: My best friend and I watched the first film at a sleepover when we were about 14. I think, on reflection, the scene where Bridget sleeps with Hugh Grant’s character, Daniel Cleaver, for the first time probably wasn’t appropriate for us… I do remember thinking she shouldn’t have worn the big knickers (but I would’ve had no idea why), and we giggled through all the adult bits.
BBC News’s Yasmin Rufo and Noor Nanji, both lifelong fans of Bridget Jones
What can a 1990s icon teach someone in their 20s about love today?
Noor: Bridget Jones’s obsession with Daniel Cleaver was my life in my 20s. I was chasing after bad boys and addicted to the drama, so it was completely relatable. My friends and I were in endless casual relationships – and that’s very Bridget too. Her dating life was the definition of the situationship, before that was even a thing. But what I really like is how she (eventually) realises she deserves better. She teaches us you can find a Mr Darcy who loves you “just as you are” – even if he does wear reindeer jumpers and fold his pants before bed.
Yasmin: Bridget has given us the ultimate guide to getting over a heartbreak: lying on the sofa wearing old pyjamas and eating ice cream out of the tub while you **** to All By Myself. Unlike the Bridget of the early films, today’s 20-somethings aren’t incessantly checking for answerphone messages but we are guilty of a bit of post-breakup stalking. Even if the tech isn’t the same, early Bridget’s neurotic tendencies can still teach us that obsessing over someone is rarely worth it.
Sophie G: Bridget isn’t a perfect character, and that’s OK. You should be loved for who you are and not try to change yourself to fit in with what society thinks you should be – but learning to accept that is a hard task.
Hannah: At first, Bridget is the epitome of a woman who thinks she needs a man to survive but by the end of the first film, she teaches us to value nice, respectful guys and not to tolerate people who cheat (though, admittedly, they shouldn’t have made Daniel Cleaver so hot!).
She also teaches us how to work at a relationship, that love is a choice as well as a feeling, and how to be vulnerable and have boundaries at the same time.
What does Bridget’s character mean to you?
Sophie T: It comes back to not needing to change yourself in a society that pressurises us constantly to be skinnier, taller, to read more books and be the best at hobbies. Having a character with self-acceptance is so important when we are constantly being pressured to change ourselves.
Yasmin: I love that Bridget embraces her chaotic energy and that really appeals to Gen Z. If she was a woman in her 20s now, she’d definitely have fallen madly in love with the concept of brat summer – instead of Chaka Khan, she’d be blaring out Charli XCX’s 365 through her headphones on her morning commute.
Noor: Wear the big knickers. Eating the entire contents of your fridge is OK sometimes. And don’t be defeated by a bad hair day!
Alamy
But, isn’t the series a bit problematic for 2025?
Yasmin: Bridget is by no means perfect – her calorie counting obsession feels dated and other characters branding a woman who weighs 60kg **** is jarring. Body positivity may be more celebrated now – in fact, some women would love “a bottom the size of two bowling ******” – but being self-conscious about your appearance is a universal feeling that transcends decades.
One thing I will say is that it’s hard to feel too sorry for Bridget when she owns her own flat in central London, has a successful publishing and journalism career and doesn’t seem to worry about the price of a round of drinks at the pub – it all feels a little less realistic now.
Noor: You could definitely argue the earlier books and films haven’t aged well. First of all, there’s a noticeable lack of diversity, and way too many sexist jokes. Then you chuck in all that obsessing over being single, and Bridget’s fretting over her calorie intake.
Much of that feels out of place in the context of the progress we’ve made now, but that’s not to say it no longer has relevance: one of my friends is considering Ozempic and others still worry about why they’ve not met their dream partner as they swipe through Tinder and Bumble.
Sophie G: I think if Bridget was created now, some of those more “problematic” elements of her character might be changed but that would be a shame, as it’s part of her charm.
We all say and do things we kick ourselves for later. And most of Bridget’s more problematic moments are the result of pressures women are subjected to in our society. The way Bridget acts feels more realistic than some characters who are the perfect feminist who deals with everything in the best way.
Getty
What have you learnt through Bridget about the importance of friendships?
Noor: I don’t think I could’ve got through the numerous crises of my 20s without having a close group of female friends around me, as Bridget does. Nowadays, there are probably fewer Friday pub trips after work, and more meeting up for yoga and spin, but the overall message is the same: choose your friends wisely as they’re the ones who will be there when everything else goes wrong.
Sophie T: That friendship will always be there through the ups and downs of romantic life: to laugh at the failures and be there to comfort you when you need it. Bridget’s interactions with her friends are the same as mine. We’re always catching up over a meal and drink to moan about life – though there’s a little less smoking these days.
Yasmin: Find yourself friends that will eat your blue celery soup! Instead of going for drinks at a fancy London bar and getting a ****** cab home, we often split a bottle of cheap Tesco wine at one of our crammed and crumbly flats. But really, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing, it’s just about having a supportive group of friends who can tell you when it’s time to ditch your toxic Daniel Cleaver-esque situationship.
What did Bridget teach you about your career?
Sophie T: Whenever I’m in a work situation where I’m meeting new people, I genuinely always picture the scene from the film where Bridget’s trying to introduce people to each other with a fact about the other person and messes it up.
The iconic scene when she tells her boss Daniel she’s quitting has also always stuck with me. During times when I’ve had to deal with sexism in my career and have battled it head on, I’d like to imagine R-E-S-P-E-C-T was playing in the background.
Noor: Don’t send emails before proof reading, don’t try and use language you don’t understand. Oh, and don’t sleep with your boss.
Sophie G: It’s okay to try something new and put yourself out there, regardless of your age or where you think you should be in your career at a certain point. Bridget’s fear of public speaking has definitely resonated with me in the past, but knowing I’ll never have to present in front of Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Salmon Rushdie is a comforting thought.
Hannah: To be ambitious and aspirational. A successful career is important to a sense of purpose. You can make mistakes and work through them and you can make bold decisions and take risks.

The Grocery Chain That Just Put A Nationwide Limit On Eggs Per Customer
The Grocery Chain That Just Put A Nationwide Limit On Eggs Per Customer
It’s been a big week in the egg department, with customers in some parts of the country seeing prices double and even worse — and that’s if they can get their hands on them at all. Some shoppers have arrived only to be met with empty fridges — a result of a resurgence of bird flu across America’s egg and dairy farms. Forced to slaughter nearly 150 million birds since the outbreak began in 2022, the country has found itself faced with yet another shortage. Now, following reports of egg surcharges at popular breakfast chains, some stores have placed limits on how many customers can buy in specific areas and Trader Joe’s has issued a nationwide mandate.
Trader Joe’s spokesperson Nakia Rohde issued a statement to KOIN, saying, “Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day, in all Trader Joe’s stores across the country.” Priced at around $5 per dozen, it’s not surprising if customers, in the face of the surging prices at other grocers, went to Trader Joe’s to stock up. In fact, throughout years of food inflation, Trader Joe’s has been a place of refuge by remaining significantly more affordable than other food stores, with data from Consumers’ Checkbook placing its prices about 20% below average during the peak of inflation in 2022.
From the size of the parking lots to the privately labeled snacks, TJ’s entire business model helps customers save. The nationwide egg limit is just its way of ensuring everyone can.

TJ’s Customers Respond To Egg Limits

In a Reddit thread posted yesterday afternoon, one Trader Joe’s shopper described a situation where he was asked by a fellow customer to help them get around the limit by purchasing an additional carton of eggs for them. He refused to take part, but the responses from other TJ’s shoppers seem to show their general appreciation for the chain placing a limit on its eggs. “My TJ’s instituted the one dozen per household this week. Where they’d normally be out by 8:30 am, I was there by 9:15 and there were still eggs left,” said one customer. Another commented, “The egg shortage is all over. My TJ’s here in Arizona is limited to one as well. I got one of the last free-range dozen. There [were] maybe 10 total egg cartons, including the half dozen. I was happy they hadn’t marked the prices up.”
Earlier in the week, many shoppers reported finding empty shelves where the eggs would normally be at their local TJ’s stores. Most reported their stores selling out of them completely within a couple of hours of the location opening its doors. By placing a limit on how many eggs each customer can buy in a single day, Trader Joe’s is ensuring that every customer has an equal opportunity to get their fix of eggs at an affordable price. Now, if only Trader Joe’s would open more stores in different locations.

Wall Street closes lower on trade war escalation
Wall Street closes lower on trade war escalation
All three US stock indexes closed lower on Friday after President Donald Trump said he plans to announce reciprocal tariffs on many countries next week, following weak jobs and consumer sentiment data.
Trump did not identify which countries would be hit but suggested it would be a broad effort that could also help solve US budget problems.
“Today, the tone was set early with the payroll report and very quickly people ignored that as soon as tariff conversations started coming back in,” said Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide.
Markets had a dismal start to the week when Trump announced sweeping trade tariffs over the weekend, before he suspended the levies on goods from Mexico and Canada on Monday for a month. A host of strong earnings in recent days offset the weak start.
Earlier in the day, a survey showed US consumer sentiment dropped unexpectedly in February to a seven-month low and inflation expectations rocketed, with households seeing inflation over the next year surging to 4.3 per cent – the highest since November 2023.
Another report showed US job growth slowed more than expected in January after robust gains in the prior two months, although a 4.0 per cent unemployment rate will likely give the Fed cover to hold off cutting interest rates at least until June.
The final employment report under former president Joe Biden’s administration showed 598,000 fewer jobs were created in the 12 months through last March than previously estimated. The final payrolls benchmark revision, however, was less than the reduction of 818,000 jobs estimated back in August.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 444.23 points, or 0.99 per cent, to 44,303.40, the S&P 500 lost 57.58 points, or 0.95 per cent, to 6,025.99 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 268.59 points, or 1.36 per cent, to 19,523.40.
All three indexes were down for the week, with the Dow breaking a three-week streak of gains and ending 0.54 per cent lower. The S&P fell 0.24 per cent while the Nasdaq was down 0.53 per cent.
All 11 S&P 500 sectors traded lower on Friday, with consumer discretionary leading losses with a roughly 2.5 per cent fall.
Uber jumped 6.6 per cent after billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman disclosed a large stake in the company.
Amazon.com dipped 4.1 per cent due to weakness in the retailer’s cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services, and lower-than-expected forecasts for first-quarter revenue and profit.
The Cboe Volatility Index, known as Wall Street’s fear gauge, rose 6.6 per cent on Friday to 16.3.
Traders of short-term interest-rate futures now expect the Fed to cut interest rates just once this year, backing away from earlier bets on two rate cuts starting in June.
Among other movers, Expedia rose 17.3 per cent after the online travel platform posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter results.
Elf Beauty tumbled 19.6 per cent after the cosmetics company cut its annual net sales and profit forecasts.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2.79-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 162 new highs and 104 new lows on the NYSE.
On the Nasdaq, 1,241 stocks rose and 3,145 fell as declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2.53-to-1 ratio.
Volume on US exchanges was 15.06 billion shares, compared with the 14.91 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

Kane cool from the spot twice as Bayern beat Bremen
Kane cool from the spot twice as Bayern beat Bremen
Harry Kane calmly converted two penalties as Bayern Munich beat Werder Bremen 3-0 to go nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
Kane sent goalkeeper Michael Zetterer the wrong way in the 56th minute and deep into stoppage time when he scored into the bottom left corner for a league leading 21 goals, after hitting the outside post and crossbar earlier in the game.
Both penalties were caused by Bremen’s Anthony Jung, the first for handball and the second for tripping Jamal Musiala.
Substitute Leroy Sane scored Bayern’s second in the 82nd at the far post.
After a difficult first half Bayern will be happy with the victory and a first clean sheet in six matches ahead of a Champions League play-off duel with Scotland’s Celtic, with a Bundesliga topper at second-placed Bayer Leverkusen sandwiched in-between the two European matches.
“It’s another nice game. You need moments to break the deadlock. As a striker you take responsibility,” Kane told streaming portal DAZN.
“We have to keep that standard as high as possible. It’s a big month for us with two big away games next week.”
Bremen forward Marvin Duksch said: “We knew what kind of game we would face. We tried our best and defended well until the first goal.”
He also maintained “we wouldn’t have been given the penalty” over the handball incident.
Bayern dominated the first half of the Bundesliga-record 116th duel with Bremen, but found it hard to threaten the firm defence of the visitors who had won five of their previous 10 season games on the road, and 1-0 in Munich last season.
Kane came closest on the stroke of half-time when his header grazed the outside left post, after Kingsley Coman’s earlier shot landed on the roof of the net.
Kane hit the crossbar seconds after the restart but was then his ruthless self from the spot.
He missed a second goal shortly after from a promising right angle as Bayern were now more dangerous against a harmless Bremen side coached by assistant Patrick Kohlmann because of Ole Werner’s red card last week.
Sane scored off Konrad Laimer’s low cross from the right, a minute after coming on for Coman; and Kane then chose the same corner as his first penalty on the last play of the match for the final score.
The other eight games are on the weekend when Leverkusen can’t afford to drop points at Wolfsburg in the title race, and Niko Kovac makes his Borussia Dortmund coaching debut against VfB Stuttgart.

Detry storms to lead in quest for maiden PGA title
Detry storms to lead in quest for maiden PGA title
Thomas Detry nearly aced the par-3 16th hole and shot a seven-under 64 in the second round to take a two-shot lead in the Phoenix Open.
Detry had eight birdies and a bogey to reach 12 under on another day of perfect conditions at TPC Sawgrass on Friday.
Michael Kim shot a bogey-free 63 to reach 10 under and was tied with Alex Smalley, who shot 65.
Jordan Spieth put himself in the mix with eagles on 13 and 15, shooting 65 to reach nine under in his second tournament since offseason wrist surgery.
Three-time PGA Tour winner Tom Kim and Christiaan Bezuidenhout also were nine under, each shooting 66.
Argentine Emiliano Grillo set off the biggest roar – and the only beer shower – of the day, slam-dunking his tee shot on the rowdy par-3 16th for an ace.
Tournament officials had tried to curb drinks from flying out of the stands at the stadium hole since Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz set off beer showers with aces in 2022. The new measures did little good after Grillo’s shot flew in the hole and swirled around the cup before dropping to send the suds flying.
Justin Thomas nearly matched Grillo, hitting his tee shot on No.16 to three feet in a 68 that moved him to eight under.
Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free 66 to reach seven under after a wild ride in the opening round of his second start since suffering a freak puncture wound on his hand while cooking Christmas dinner.
A two-time Belgian Olympian, Detry shot 66 in the first round at TPC Scottsdale and opened his second with three birdies on the front nine in his bid for a first PGA Tour win.
His birdie on No.9 kicked off a run of three straight and he added three more — he hit to 2 feet on 16 — around a bogey on the 490-yard par-4 14th.
Spieth tied for 69th at Pebble Beach last week and scrambled from some tough spots to shoot 68 in the opening round in the desert. He managed one birdie on the front nine in the second round, but sank eagle putts of five and 11 feet on TPC Scottsdale’s two back-nine par-5s.
Spieth added a birdie on No.17 after hitting just right of the short par four.
Coming off a missed cut at Torrey Pines, Smalley opened with a 67 and followed it up with four birdies in a five-hole stretch in the second round starting on No.2. The 28-year-old American rolled in a six-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th and birdied the difficult par-4 11th, but bogeyed the par-5 15th when he hit his second shot in the water.
Kim, winner of the 2018 John Deere Classic, missed the cut in two of his three tournament to start the season, but had his game dialled in at TPC Scottsdale. After opening with a 69, he charged up the leaderboard by closing with four straight birdies to shoot a six-under 30 on the back nine.
*********** Min Woo Lee improved on his opening 70 with a 66 to move to six under. He jumped 26 positions and is now tied 18th.

Trudeau says Trump talk of absorbing Canada is ‘a real thing’, says source
Trudeau says Trump talk of absorbing Canada is ‘a real thing’, says source
By Nivedita Balu
TORONTO (Reuters) -Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday said U.S. President Donald Trump’s talk about absorbing Canada “is a real thing” and is linked to the country’s rich natural resources, a government source said.
Trudeau made the remarks during a closed-door session of business and labor leaders on how best to respond to Trump’s threats of tariffs on ********* imports.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
His comments were first reported by the Toronto Star, which said they were mistakenly carried by a loudspeaker.
Trump has repeatedly suggested Canada would be better off if it agreed to become the 51st U.S. state.
“They’re very aware of our resources, of what we have and they very much want to be able to benefit from those,” the Star quoted Trudeau as saying.
“But Mr. Trump has it in mind that one of the easiest ways of doing that is absorbing our country. And it is a real thing.”
The government source confirmed that the Star’s account of the remarks was accurate.
Canada, seeking to fend off U.S. measures, has stressed it is a trusted partner and a major supplier of oil, minerals and other natural resources.
In remarks open to reporters, Trudeau had earlier said Canada could face long-term political challenges with the United States even if it manages to avert Trump’s threat of tariffs.
Trump on Monday said he would delay the imposition of tariffs on ********* exports by 30 days in return for concessions on border and crime enforcement, in particular cracking down on fentanyl smuggling.
Trudeau said Ottawa’s immediate challenge was to persuade Washington that Canada was doing all it could to combat the flow of fentanyl. Public data shows 0.2% of all the supply of the drug seized in the U.S. comes from the ********* border.
If tariffs were imposed, Canada would respond in kind, but its goal would always be to have the measures removed as fast as possible, Trudeau told business and labor leaders at the start of the meeting on how to diversify trade and boost the economy.
“The strategic reflection we have to have right now is … how we get through, and thrive, and grow stronger over the next four years and into what may be a more challenging long-term political situation with the United States?” he said.
Peter Navarro, a senior Trump trade adviser, this week said Canada had become a leading source of small, duty-free shipments of drugs, also had “big” visa issues and had let people on the “terrorism watch list” enter the United States.
Canada sends 75% of all goods and services exports south of the border, making it highly vulnerable to U.S. sanctions.
Trudeau, echoing long-standing complaints from the business community, said internal trade barriers between the 10 provinces were hampering the economy.
“This is one of those moments and opportunities where … there’s a window open because of the context we’re in. We have to jump through it,” he said.
