Jeff Kaplan Revealed Overwatch Was Created Out of a Canceled Blizzard Game That Was 7 Years in the Making
Jeff Kaplan Revealed Overwatch Was Created Out of a Canceled Blizzard Game That Was 7 Years in the Making
A follow-up to the wildly popular World of Warcraft, Titan was an ambitious MMO project that Blizzard had canceled in 2014. As Blizzard prepared to reveal its upcoming game, the hero shooter Overwatch, was actually constructed using some of the leftover materials from Titan.
Overwatch is the biggest game of Blizzard. | Credit: Blizzard Entertainment.
It became evident why the company had been so eager to make the announcement a month and a half later. Eleven years have gone by, Overwatch has grown to be a mainstay of the Blizzard franchise and one of the most played games in the market. However, one can’t help but wonder what might have occurred if events had turned out differently.
Overwatch was distilled from Project Titan‘s failure
Titan fell, and Overwatch stood up. | Credit: Blizzard Entertainment.
Titan was supposed to be a revolutionary new MMO game that would transform the genre in the same way that World of Warcraft had done years earlier. However, Titan became too large and ambitious for Blizzard to manage. After roughly seven years of development, Titan was canceled in September 2013 before Blizzard could even formally reveal its existence.
November 2014 saw the release of Blizzard’s brand-new multiplayer shooter, Overwatch. In part, it was put together using the remnants of Titan. Speaking about the reason for this failure, here’s what Overwatch director and former vice president of Blizzard, Jeff Kaplan, stated (via Business Insider):
In general, when you’re working on a game, you usually have a sense of where the team morale is at, and sort of the team sensibilities in terms of how successfully they feel the game is going. And also you have a sense of the game itself — is it fun, is the technology working, are the tools to make the game working — and in general, what happened toward the end of “Titan” is we realized that so many of the elements we had enjoyed experiencing working on other projects were just not working.
Overwatch, one of Blizzard’s biggest hits to date, was made using some of the superhero assets made for Titan, which is a bright spot in the game’s failure. However, it’s possible that most of the work that went into Titan will never be seen by the general public. And it continues to be one of the video game industry’s cautionary tales.
Why was Titan actually canceled?
The failure of Titan might be the biggest setback in the gaming world. | Credit: Blizzard Entertainment.
Titan‘s development, the issues that occurred behind the scenes, and its eventual cancellation have all been the subject of some stories. However, a lot of it had been rumors.
We now know more about what transpired with the project thanks to Jason Schreier’s book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. Details from a section of the book that delves deeply into Titan and its development issues were shared by Polygon ahead of the book’s October 8th release date.
Blizzard didn’t want to wait for another game to be a “WoW killer,” according to the book. However, an “Overwatch killer” is already here. Rather than doing it themselves, they planned to develop another MMO that would keep players in the same ecosystem. Although there had been discussions about creating a game akin to World of Starcraft, the general consensus was that StarCraft could be used in an MMORPG.

NZ to loosen visa rules to lure foreign investors
NZ to loosen visa rules to lure foreign investors
New Zealand will relax visa rules to attract more foreign investors, in an effort to stimulate economic growth.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said the country’s investor visa category would be made “simpler and more flexible” to encourage investors to choose New Zealand for their “capital, skills and international connections”.
“These changes will turbocharge our economic growth, bringing brighter days ahead for all Kiwis,” Stanford said in a statement on Sunday announcing that two new visa categories – for “higher-risk investments” and “mixed investments” – would be created.
The changes, to take effect from April, follow the government’s recent relaxation of visa rules allowing holidaymakers to work remotely while visiting the country, aimed at boosting its tourism sector.
After slipping into a technical recession in the third quarter of 2024, the New Zealand government is seeking ways to bolster growth.
In January, it announced plans to set up Invest New Zealand, part of the government’s international economic development agency, to serve as a one-stop-shop for overseas investment.

Man’s pop-up urinal death may never be explained, family fears
The family of a man who was crushed to death in a freak accident fear they may never find out what caused the pop-up urinal he was working on to drop suddenly.
Maintenance engineer Kevin Holding, 60, was killed when working in Soho on 27 January 2023. His inquest heard it took two hours for a crane to arrive to lift the urinal off him.
His daughter Karlie Holding, 37, said the lack of answers about how he came to be crushed was “disgusting” and “disrespectful”. She told BBC London: “The family as a whole just hasn’t been the same at all: we’re a very broken family.”
Det Ch Insp Dean Purvis from the Met Police, which is still investigating the death, apologised to the Holdings.

He said: “We are sorry for the impact this is having on everyone in Mr Holding’s family.”
Pop-up loos were introduced in central London in 2002 to discourage street urination. During the day, they are stored below the pavement and at night they rise hydraulically.
Karlie, from Sevenoaks in Kent, added that Mr Holding’s parents, both in their 80s, had been “knocked for six”.
She said of her grandparents, who are both in their 80s: “One of their biggest fears is that they’ll never find out before they pass.
“We haven’t got closure, we haven’t been able to mourn properly, close that chapter and live our lives in memory of Dad and build our family back up.
“We’re still in this grey zone where we have no idea what happened, how he lost his life, so we can’t put that to rest.”

Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes in the western Caribbean
Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes in the western Caribbean
A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck in the western Caribbean on Saturday night, prompting a tsunami advisory for the Cayman Islands as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were cleared of the threat.
The temblor struck at 6:23 p.m. ET at a depth of about 6 miles below ground, about 130 miles south-southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“The Cayman Islands is under a Tsunami threat. Residents living near the coastline are encouraged to move inland,” the government of the Cayman Islands hazard management agency said.
The agency asked residents along the coast to move to higher ground as it warned of possible tsunami activity within an hour of the advisory.
The Cayman Islands hazard management agency described tsunamis as deceptively powerful, sometimes measuring only 1.5 feet but moving water in a wave that can be 50-60 miles wide. Such a wave’s crushing flow of water is its most damaging element, the agency said, with a telltale sign of a tsunami in progress being a rapidly receding sea ahead of the sea’s rush.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said Cuba was under a similar threat — a tsunami measuring between around 3 feet and 10 feet high.
A since-canceled National Weather Service tsunami advisory urged residents of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to take action because a tsunami with dangerous waves or currents were expected or were happening, according to the agency.
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón of Puerto Rico advised residents to “get out of the water immediately, especially on the west and south coasts of the island” — as a precaution — according to a statement.
“Although no major impact event is anticipated, as a safety precaution no one should be in the water until further notice,” she said.
The USGS initially measured the earthquake at a massive 8.0, but later reassessed its energy and determined it measured 7.6.
Because the temblor was located below an island surrounded by the Caribbean, according to USGS mapping, the agency said “little or no population” was exposed to the shaking.
The USGS placed the quake at a strike slip fault near the boundary between the North America and Caribbean tectonic plates.
“Large earthquakes at this location of the plate boundary are not unexpected,” the agency said in an analysis published on its website Saturday night.
It said 10 magnitude 6 or greater temblors have happened in the area in the last century. One of the most notable earthquakes in the region took place on Jan. 10, 2018, when a magnitude 7.5 temblor “caused some damage and a small tsunami,” the USGS said.
“Luckily, the remote location of these earthquakes limits the potential for significant damage due to shaking,” it said.

Japan PM Ishiba’s Donald Trump study sessions pay off at talks
Japan PM Ishiba’s Donald Trump study sessions pay off at talks
Shaimaa Khalil
Tokyo correspondent
Watch: Trump and Japanese PM meet at the White House
If Japan needed reassurances it was indeed still the US’s top ally and friend in the increasingly unstable Asia-Pacific, it got that and then some.
But what was striking about the Trump-Ishiba meeting at the White House was what didn’t happen.
Unlike most of the Trump domestic and global dynamics so far, this was neither controversial nor confrontational.
“On television, he is very frightening,” Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters after Friday’s meeting.
“But when I met him, he was very sincere, very powerful and strong willed,” he added.
There’s a lot that ties Washington and Tokyo. Japan has been the top foreign investor in the US for five consecutive years, creating thousands of jobs. And there are 54,000 US military personnel stationed in Japan.
But President Donald Trump has given his friends and foes a lot to worry about: from tariff wars against China, Canada and Mexico to his US “ownership” of Gaza proposal and his sanctions against the International Criminal Court.
“Trump has made some erratic decisions towards countries that believed themselves to be America’s friends,” said Jeffrey Hall, lecturer at Japan’s Kanda University of International Studies.
“There was a fear in Tokyo that the same might happen: that Trump might slap huge tariffs on Japan or start some dispute. But that didn’t happen,” he added.
Trump ‘study sessions’
While Trump didn’t rule out tariffs against Tokyo, it wasn’t the main feature of this meeting.
Ishiba went to Washington prepared. He’d studied. Literally. he held “study sessions” with staff and sought advice from his predecessor, Fumio Kishida.
He also had some help from the widow of the late former PM Shinzo Abe, who had a close relationship with Trump during his first presidency, forged on the golf course.
Ishiba’s homework paid off.
Apart from when Trump mistakenly referred to Nippon Steel as “Nissan”, there weren’t many eye-raising moment like the many other announcements by the US president.
In fact – as far as Japan is concerned – this meeting was reassuring.
Getty Images
Japan has been the top foreign investor in the US for five years running
Both leaders seemed to have met eye-to-eye on their countries’ plans to boost trade and defence ushering in a “golden-era” of Japan-US relations.
Ishiba announced his country’s plans to increase investment in the US to $1tn (£806bn), as the two economic powers rebalance trade relations.
Ishiba said Japanese car makers would boost investment, while Tokyo would expand imports of US liquified natural gas (LNG).
This would have been music to Trump’s ears and a boost to his “drill, baby, drill” announcement from his inauguration speech.
The two men also managed to find common ground on the controversial issue of Nippon Steel.
Trump said Nippon would “invest heavily” in the Pennsylvania-based US Steel without taking a majority stake.
The Japanese firm’s attempted takeover of US Steel had been previously blocked by President Joe Biden on national security grounds.
Keeping talks simple
There were enough boxes ticked for Japan to breathe easy – but the main purpose of Ishiba’s visit was personal.
The Japanese PM has been in a fraught political position at home – with his ********* government keeping a weak grip on power after it was humiliated in October’s general elections when they lost their ruling majority.
Ishiba was desperate for a win.
The man himself has not elicited much confidence in how he would fare opposite a notorious Trump.
“For weeks local media played up the idea that he would not succeed diplomatically – that he was clumsy, not a sociable person and that Trump would eat his lunch, if he made it to Washington,” said Mr Hall.
But Ishiba is walking away with what looks a lot like success.
The former Japanese defence minister is a veteran politician known for dense speeches in parliament. Observers have said such speeches manage to confuse some of his opponents and bore others.
But in a “Trump strategy meeting” with his staff, the biggest piece of advice he reportedly got was: “Conclusion first. Keep it simple.”
“Ishiba followed a play book to flatter Trump personally and offer him economic investments in the US instead of confronting him”, said Mr Hall.
Avoiding confrontation
There are several issues that Japan and the US could disagree on. Not least Trump’s proposal of a US takeover of the Gaza Strip, which sparked fierce criticism around the world.
Japan reiterated its long-standing position of supporting a two-state solution.
“We won’t change our stance,” said Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya last week.
Tokyo is also watching Trump’s trade war with China nervously.
But Hall said Japan would not be drawn into the US-China trade war if it could help it.
When it comes to China, Japan needs to strike a fine balance.
Beijing is Tokyo’s largest trading partner. China is one of the largest investment destinations for Japanese companies.
On the defence and diplomatic front both the US and Japan are challenged by China’s rising influence and assertiveness in the region and globally.
Not least with ******** military’s now frequent and provocative moves in waters near Taiwan which Beijing sees as a renegade province.
In 2022, Japan, a pacifist nation, announced it would double its military spending by 2027, citing threats posed by China and North Korea, and saying it would acquire the ability to strike enemy bases.
The changes marked the most dramatic overhaul to Japan’s security strategy since it adopted a pacifist constitution after World War Two.
With North Korea continuing its nuclear program, South Korea in political meltdown, and the ongoing US-China rivalry, Japan has yet again presented itself as America’s least challenging and only unproblematic friend in the region.
“Japan will avoid any conformation with Trump when possible. It will most likely become a ‘yes’ friend,” said Hall.

Tears as Thai workers held captive in Gaza go home
Five Thai nationals held captive by ****** for more than a year have returned to Thailand to be greeted by their tearful families.
The returnees, dressed in winter jackets, were met with emotional embraces from their families on Sunday at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport..
“We are all deeply touched to come back to our birthplace … to be standing here,” said Pongsak Thaenna, one of the returnees.
“I don’t know what else to say, we are all truly thankful.”
****** militants abducted at least 240 people, including Israelis and foreign nationals, in an October 2023 attack on the Israeli border.
During the attack, ****** gunmen killed 41 Thais and kidnapped 30 Thai labourers. Later that year, the first group of Thai hostages was returned.
Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, who escorted the hostages back from Israel, expressed relief at their return.
“This is emotional … to come back to the embrace of their families,” he said.
“We never gave up and this was the fruit of that.”
Before the conflict, approximately 30,000 Thai labourers worked in Israel’s agriculture sector, making them one of the largest migrant worker groups in the country. Nearly 9000 Thais were repatriated following the attack.
The workers primarily come from Thailand’s northeastern region, an area comprising villages and farming communities that is among the poorest in the country.
Thailand’s foreign ministry said a Thai national is still believed to be held captive by ******.
“We still have hope and continue to work to bring them back,” Maris said, adding that this includes the bodies of two workers who were killed.
