Mythbusting in FNQ | The West ***********
Mythbusting in FNQ | The West ***********
I remember when there was no way anyone would travel to Bali in the middle of Perth’s summer — or even anything close to the “off-season”.
But when a few of the Asian airlines started throwing around $99 flights, I don’t think anyone even checked the travel dates, so now Legian, Kuta and Seminyak are filled with West Australians all year round.
It hasn’t quite caught on for domestic travel yet, I’m thinking, as I pull into the tropical postcard-perfect town of Port Douglas, less than an hour’s drive north of Cairns.
Perth temperatures are pushing the mid-30s, with sunshine logos on the evening weather report as far as the forecast stretches, so why would you think about travelling to the opposite corner of the country in the apparent wet season?
Well for me, I’m thinking, the lack of crowds and the discounted accommodation for starters. And the endless blue sky above the coastal palms is the first of a few wet-season myths being busted on this trip.
I’ve been lucky as I travel around Australia with my dog Mallee, that we have dodged the peak tourist season everywhere we have been, with nearly every local and business operator saying something like “it’s madness here in peak season”.

Nestled between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, Port Douglas, with its ample hospitality options, has become a wildly popular base to explore some of Australia’s natural wonders.
Today I’ve traded the Jayco Penguin for the relative luxury of a dog-friendly Airbnb. Another myth busted — people back in Cairns later asked for the Airbnb link, shocked I could find a ****-friendly villa in a holiday complex in the centre of town.
I see on the complex website the holiday rooms look a bit tired, but the Airbnb host has recently completed a stylish renovation throughout and it feels like a luxury hotel room with a kitchenette — and, of course, a welcoming attitude to dogs.
My host even drops a new air fryer an my door when she realises she’s incorrectly said there is an oven in the unit.
Camera IconThe Airbnb was a step up from other villas. Credit: Air BnB/Supplied
Mallee and I wander around the tourist town. It’s quiet, but not so quiet it’s a ghost town.
The open-air pubs still have plenty of people on the deck, and the charter boats heading out to the Great Barrier Reef have a steady stream of eager punters on board.
There are remnants of Port Douglas’ 1800s gold rush history as we wander around the middle of town.
Mallee watches hopelessly as her ball runs off the Sugar Wharf built in 1887, running into the crocodile-filled Packers Creek. We sacrifice the ball.
Just a ball’s throw away is the charming 1880-built St Mary’s by The Sea chapel, still used for services today.
Camera IconThe historic St Mary’s by The Sea chapel. Credit: Port Douglas Tourism
However, the mining decline and several cyclones decimated Port Douglas, until tourism boomed in the 1980s and made it the tropical escape I’m visiting today.
The Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina is about as clear a sign as you need to see the new goldrush this town relies on.
I don’t think you need to be a Russian oligarch to berth here, but that kind of bank account might help. It’s still worth a visit, with great cafes, restaurants, and the popular Hemingway’s Brewery all luring you off the main drag.
But I’ve found the antithesis next door. Almost too easy to miss tucked into a corner of Packers Creek, the Tin Shed is the community club, boasting million-dollar views without the price tag.
Camera IconCold beer with a hot view at Tin Shed. Credit: Christien de Garis/Supplied
Oh yes, the heat and humidity are no myth — but I want to know I’m in tropical far north Queensland!
What I do need is a swim. “But what about stingers and crocs?”, you ask. Myth busted!
Stinger nets are set up and patrolled by Surf Life Saving on the beach at the end of the main drag. They will close the beach if conditions are ripe for stingers or a croc has been spotted, which is not the case today, with plenty of people sunbathing and swimming.
I won’t lie. After growing up on WA beaches, particularly Esperance, the brown, tepid water isn’t so refreshing, so luckily I get the use of the resort pool at my Airbnb.
It’s such a treat, after a long day exploring on foot, to have my own private, air-conditioned, dog-friendly home to come back to.
I’m watching the afternoon clouds build and lightning in the distance — another wet-season bonus — and reflecting that the *********** tropical wet season still has plenty to offer: room to stretch out and relax, caravan spots and accommodation options aplenty, and no need to book for dinner.
With some towns bursting at the seams in peak season, it might be something to consider next time you’re planning an adventure.
+ Christien de Garis was a guest of Airbnb. They have not seen or approved this story before publication.

Northern California reservoirs recharged after atmospheric rivers
Northern California reservoirs recharged after atmospheric rivers
(FOX40.COM) — Since Feb.1, Northern California has been pummeled by atmospheric rivers that have swelled the region’s reservoirs. So where do reservoir levels stand now after a dry January?
According to the California Department of Water Resources, nearly every reservoir in Northern California is above its historical average for this time of year.
The history hidden beneath 3 California lakes
Shasta Lake
California’s largest reservoir Shasta Lake is measuring 136% of its historic average and at 90% of its total capacity of 4.5 million acre-feet.
An acre-foot is roughly equal to a football field covered in a foot deep of water.
On Feb. 1, Shasta Lake had a reservoir elevation of 1,029 feet and over the last week has risen by over 20 feet to 1,051 feet.
This significant rise in lake level is due to an astonishing amount of inflow from the lake’s tributaries.
Body, vehicle recovered from the Sacramento River after four days
On Tuesday, lake inflow monitors measured over 102,000 cubic feet of water per second (CFS) flowing into the lake. That is equivalent to 763,012 gallons of water or more than one Olympic-sized swimming pool worth of water flowing into the lake every second.
Here are the inflow rates for Feb. 1 to Feb. 5: • Feb. 1: 13,543 cfs• Feb. 2: 42,622 cfs• Feb. 3: 69,536 cfs• Feb. 4: 102,213 cfs• Feb. 5: 73,170 cfs
Shasta Dam is operated by the US Bureau of Reclamation.
Lake Oroville
California’s second-largest reservoir Lake Oroville, also saw a significant resurgence as it climbed to 84% of its total capacity and 137% of its historic average.
On Feb. 1, the California Department of Water Resources began increasing the rate of water flowing from Lake Oroville’s main spillway in anticipation of the coming storm systems.
Sacramento Weather, Radar & Maps
Spilling began at 9,400 cfs on Feb. 1 and steadily ramped up to 37,180 cfs on Thursday. Even with the strong discharge, lake levels still rose by 20 feet and saw an increase of nearly 278,000 acre-feet.
“These coordinated releases are critical to maintaining storage space in Lake Oroville to capture ongoing and future runoff from storms while providing flood protection to downstream communities,” the DWR wrote.
Folsom Lake
Closer to the Sacramento region, Folsom Lake is 107% of its historic average for this time of year despite being at exactly 50% of its total storage capacity.
Although Folsom Lake did not see the staggering inflows like Shasta and Oroville, it did see a significant rise in lake levels.
This 1955 dam still produces needed power for Sacramento
Between Feb. 1 and Feb. 6, Folsom Lake rose from 396.81 feet to 414.94 feet for a total gain of 18.13 feet. The rain also brought an additional 128,899 acre-feet of water.
Folsom Dam is operated by the US Bureau of Reclamation.
Future Weather Forecast
According to the National Weather Service, Friday will be the start of another dry spell across Northern California.
Conditions will remain cold and dry into next week with lows below freezing from the Sacramento Valley to the Sierra Nevada.
Satellite imaging from NOAA’s GOES-West shows some lingering clouds over Northern California and broken-up storm systems in the Pacific.

Green hangs in as Noh sets hot pace in Founders Cup
Green hangs in as Noh sets hot pace in Founders Cup
Yealimi Noh has stormed to an eight-under 63 and a one-stroke lead over three-time champion Jim Young Ko entering the final round of the LPGA Tour’s Founders Cup in Florida.
American Noh birdied eight of the last 11 holes at Bradenton Country Club on Saturday to get to 18 under as she chases a maiden LPGA win.
Trying to win the event on a fourth venue, former world No.1 Ko birdied five of the final 11 for a 66.
American Megan Khang shot a career-best 62 to break Ko’s day-old course record and sit tied for third with Jin Hee Im of South Korea at 13-under.
*********** Hannah Green managed three birdies on each side in a 66 and was tied fifth with world No.1 Nelly Korda (65), six shots behind Noh.
The 23-year-old Noh has shown she will be hand to deny on Sunday, despite the depth of talent behind her.
“I think my tempo has been awesome this week,” Noh said. “It’s been the best that it’s ever been. I’ve been really staying patient throughout not only the round, but throughout my swing.”
Ko won the tournament that honours the tour’s founders in 2019 at Desert Ridge in Phoenix, 2021 at Mountain Ridge in New Jersey and 2023 in a playoff at Upper Montclair, also in New Jersey. The 29-year-old South Korean player has 15 LPGA Tour victories.
“We had gusting in the front nine, so it was hard to play,” Ko said. “After front nine, yeah, we made a lot of birdies, especially Yealimi. We had so much fun. I did my best today. Just some putts like was just sneaky, so I would say I kept for tomorrow.”
Playing in her hometown event, Korda highlighted her 65 with a chip-in birdie on No. 9. She won a Drive On tournament on the course last year for the first of her seven 2024 victories.
“Growing up on this kind of old-school Florida grass helps because it is tough to kind of hit it off,” Korda said.

Nintendo Legend Wasn’t Too Please About Working on Zelda Game Because He “wanted to experience it as a player”
Takaya Imamura was on a legendary run when he worked at Nintendo but he regrets working on one particular game. Imamura was always fond of video games so working 1991’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was something he hated. The video game designer once explained that he wanted to experience it as a player.

Today, when Imamura tries to play the game, it brings back all the bad memories as working on the game was quite hectic for the designer. He worked at Nintendo for 32 years, working on games like F-Zero X, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and Donkey Kong.

Recently, video game designer Takaya Imamura appeared for an interview with GamesRadar to talk about his time at Nintendo. During the conversation, Imamura explained he wasn’t too pleased about working on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past,
To tell the truth, when I was asked to help out on the Zelda team, I wasn’t too pleased about it – I didn’t really want to, and the reason was because I wanted to enjoy the game when it was finished, as a player. I can remember that feeling even now.
Imamura has worked on various Nintendo franchises such as F-Zero and Legend of Zelda. He also revealed that Nintendo once again called him to work on the next game thanks to the success of A Link to the Past. Once again, he couldn’t experience it as a player.
A Link to the Past is considered one of the greatest video games created by Nintendo, with all the praises focusing on its innovative gameplay and graphics. Its direct sequel, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, was released for Nintendo 3DS in 2013.
Working on A Link to the Past wasn’t an easy task for Takaya Imamura
Takaya Imamura still hates playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Image via Nintendo)
Further in the interview, Imamura explained that they had to play the same part of the games over and over again since the debugging process was so difficult. He said,
I also remember that the debugging, the QA, was really tough, having to do the same thing over and over again. I still really don’t want to play that game – the testing was that difficult. Even now, if I just jump into the game for a minute or so, the feeling comes back. It’s like PTSD or something.
Unfortunately, the game that Imamura was so excited to play turned out to be a bad memory for him. In January 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Imamura left Nintendo after 32 years.
After Nintendo, Imamura created a manga called Omega 6. Now, he is working on a video game adaptation of the manga called Omega 6 The Video Game. As per the Japanese website 4gamer, the game would be a retro-styled adventure title.

Rates tick up after jobs report
Rates tick up after jobs report
Most mortgage rates have inched up today. According to Zillow, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has increased by three basis points to 6.57%, and the 15-year fixed rate has risen by four basis points to 5.88%.
These small increases are likely a response to the latest labor data. Yesterday, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the January jobs report, which showed that the unemployment rate fell to its lowest point in eight months. Mortgage rates tend to increase when the economy does well.
Have questions about buying, owning, or selling a house? Submit your question to Yahoo’s panel of Realtors using this Google form.
Here are the current mortgage rates, according to the latest Zillow data:
30-year fixed: 6.57%
20-year fixed: 6.34%
15-year fixed: 5.88%
5/1 ARM: 6.87%
7/1 ARM: 6.81%
30-year VA: 5.98%
15-year VA: 5.40%
5/1 VA: 6.08%
Remember, these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth.

These are today’s mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data:
30-year fixed: 6.58%
20-year fixed: 6.39%
15-year fixed: 5.92%
5/1 ARM: 7.11%
7/1 ARM: 7.07%
30-year VA: 6.08%
15-year VA: 5.66%
5/1 VA: 6.08%
30-year FHA: 6.18%
15-year FHA: 5.86%
Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Mortgage refinance rates are often higher than rates when you buy a house, although that’s not always the case.
This embedded content is not available in your region.
Seeing national average mortgage rates is useful, but it can be even more helpful to see estimated rates based on your location and financial situation. Enter a few quick facts about your house hunt here to calculate what your rate could be:
You can also use Yahoo Finance’s free Yahoo’s free mortgage calculator to see how various interest rates and term lengths will impact your monthly mortgage payment. It also shows how the home price and down payment amount play into things.
Our calculator includes homeowners insurance and property taxes in your monthly payment estimate. You even have the option to enter costs for private mortgage insurance (PMI) and homeowners’ association dues if those apply to you. These details result in a more accurate monthly payment estimate than if you simply calculated your mortgage principal and interest.
There are two main advantages to a 30-year fixed mortgage: Your payments are lower, and your monthly payments are predictable.
A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has relatively low monthly payments because you’re spreading your repayment out over a longer ******* of time than with, say, a 15-year mortgage. Your payments are predictable because, unlike with an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), your rate isn’t going to change from year to year. Most years, the only things that might affect your monthly payment are any changes to your homeowners insurance or property taxes.
The main disadvantage to 30-year fixed mortgage rates is mortgage interest — both in the short and long term.
A 30-year fixed term comes with a higher rate than a shorter fixed term, and it’s higher than the intro rate to a 30-year ARM. The higher your rate, the higher your monthly payment. You’ll also pay much more in interest over the life of your loan due to both the higher rate and the longer term.
The pros and cons of 15-year fixed mortgage rates are basically swapped from the 30-year rates. Yes, your monthly payments will still be predictable, but another advantage is that shorter terms come with lower interest rates. Not to mention, you’ll pay off your mortgage 15 years sooner. So you’ll save potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest over the course of your loan.
However, because you’re paying off the same amount in half the time, your monthly payments will be higher than if you choose a 30-year term.
Dig deeper: 15-year vs. 30-year mortgages
Adjustable-rate mortgages lock in your rate for a predetermined amount of time, then change it periodically. For example, with a 5/1 ARM, your rate stays the same for the first five years and then goes up or down once per year for the remaining 25 years.
The main advantage is that the introductory rate is usually lower than what you’ll get with a 30-year fixed rate, so your monthly payments will be lower. (Current average rates don’t necessarily reflect this, though — in some cases, fixed rates are actually lower. Talk to your lender before deciding between a fixed or adjustable rate.)
With an ARM, you have no idea what mortgage rates will be like once the intro-rate ******* ends, so you risk your rate increasing later. This could ultimately end up costing more, and your monthly payments are unpredictable from year to year.
But if you plan to move before the intro-rate ******* is over, you could reap the benefits of a low rate without risking a rate increase down the road.
Learn more: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgage
First of all, now is a relatively good time to buy a house compared to the last couple of years. Home prices aren’t spiking like they were during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, if you want or need to buy a house soon, you should feel pretty good about the current climate.
Also, mortgage rates aren’t predicted to fall drastically throughout 2025 like people were expecting a few months ago. So, now could be just as good a time to buy as in a couple of months from now.
Also, the best time to buy is typically whenever it makes sense for your stage of life. Trying to time the real estate market can be as futile as timing the stock market — buy when it’s the right time for you.
Read more: Which is more important, your home price or mortgage rate?
According to Zillow, the national average 30-year mortgage rate is 6.57% right now, after gradually falling for a full week. But keep in mind that averages can vary depending on where you live. For example, if you’re buying in a city with a high cost of living, rates could be higher.
Mortgage rates are expected to go down overall in 2025, though they probably won’t significantly drop anytime soon.
Mortgage rates haven’t necessarily been dropping — they’ve been inching up and down. They’ve been relatively stagnant for the past couple of weeks.
In many ways, securing a low mortgage refinance rate is similar to when you bought your home. Try to improve your credit score and lower your debt-to-income ratio (DTI). Refinancing into a shorter term will also land you a lower rate, though your monthly mortgage payments will be higher.

Carryduff boy’s hurling ball washes up on a Scottish beach
Carryduff boy’s hurling ball washes up on a Scottish beach
BBC
Fionn O’Neil, who trains with Carryduff GAA club, lost his sliotar on holiday in Donegal last summer
When eight-year-old Fionn lost his sliotar (hurling ball) while on a summer holiday in Donegal, he thought he had lost it forever.
But when the ball washed up on a Scottish beach eight months later, it’s finder was determined to get it back to it’s owner.
Scottish man Donald Mac Isaac was walking on a beach near his home in Loch Eynort in Scotland on Monday evening when he found the hurling ball.
The sliotar was emblazoned with a name and the crest of Carryduff Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) – a club on the outskirts of Belfast.
“When I picked it up at the beach it had information on it and I thought it looked like something personal to someone because it had a name on it,” said Donald.
“I thought it might be worth finding out where the ball came from.”
The sliotar or hurling ball was embellish with the crest of Carryduff GAC
Donald got in touch with the Carryduff club which was able to contact the sliotar’s original owner, eight-year-old Fionn O’Neill.
Fionn is a member of the club and was awarded the ball because he was able to do three roll lifts in a row – a skill in which the hurling stick is rolled over the sliotar before it is flicked up into the hand.
“The ball was special to me because I won it,” the boy said.
Fionn lost the ball on a beach while he was on holiday with his family in Donegal last July.
“I was playing with it and hitting it against a rock. It went over the rock and we couldn’t find it. It got lost in a bush.”
He added: “I was shocked it turned up in Scotland – I didn’t think it could end up there. I was happy it turned up because it’s like a souvenir.”
Donald is a fluent Scottish Gaelic speaker and said he was able to recognise that the ball was related to Irish Gaelic.
“I’ve heard of hurling, which is similar to shinty that they play in Scotland.
“I felt it was important to contact the club as the owner’s name was on the ball which made it a bit more personal.
“And to find out who the owner was is quite special,” he said.
Donald Mac Isaac
Donald Mac Isaac has invited Fionn and his family to Scotland
Donald said he is open to the idea of Fionn and his family travelling to Scotland in person to reunite them with the ball.
Fionn’s mother, Donna Fisher, said they would be willing to make the trip and cannot believe the sliotar has travelled so far: “In our family we lose so many ****** with hurling – but they don’t always have a name on it – it gives it a special meaning.”
“I think we might have to take Donald up on his offer of going to Scotland to get the ball, and teach him a bit about hurling.”
Fionn won the sliotar for demonstrating his hurling skills
Fionn said despite already losing the sliotar once he is going to continue playing with it when he finally gets it back from Scotland.
“I’m hoping to get it back again. I probably will play with it again – I’m not worried about losing it again as I already know how it feels to lose it.”

February 9, 2025
The PlayStation Network is back online after being down for nearly 20 hours. Now, shortly after service was fully restored, PlayStation has issued a (very) brief update on the status of the network via social media.
“PSN has been restored,” the post said. “You should be able to access online features without any problems now.
“Sorry for the inconvenience!”
The company also pointed people to the official PlayStation Network status page where it lists all services as currently functioning.

Aside from the apology, nothing else has been said by PlayStation. There has been no mention of what caused the outage in the first place. In fact, it was the first official statement from Sony since they made a post on Friday night stating that it was “aware some users” were having problems. In between the post acknowledging the problem and the service being restored, the only other thing PlayStation posted was how to add M.2 storage to the console.
PlayStation Network originally went down on Friday night around 6pm ET. The outage impacted users across the globe, taking down the ability to sign in, play online, and even access the PlayStation Store.
Insider Gaming has reached out to PlayStation in an attempt to get an update as to what caused the PlayStation Network to go offline this weekend. Should a response be received—or an more in-depth statement be made in an official capacity—it will be added to this story.

The largest male white shark ever caught, tagged and released is approaching Florida’s east coast, near Jacksonville.
Contender, a 13.8-foot, 1,653 pound adult shark, was tagged on Jan. 17 in the western Northwest Atlantic, off the Florida-Georgia border.
He appears to be moving south, most recently surfacing near St. Augustine at about 10 a.m. Thursday., according to OCEARCH, the research group that tagged Contender.

Major Caribbean earthquake triggers tsunami alerts in Cuba, Puerto Rico
A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck the Caribbean Sea triggering tsunami warnings for a number of countries, the US Geological Survey has said.
Officials say the earthquake’s epicentre is about 20 miles (32.1km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209.2km) south-west of the Cayman Islands.
A number of tsunami alerts have been issued for the region including the coast of Colombia, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
The National Weather Service has warned of potential hazards for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands adding: “Strong currents and waves dangerous to those in or very near water”.
The USGS said large earthquakes at this location of the plate boundary are not unexpected.
In 2018 a 7.5-magnitude earthquake occurred nearby, causing some damage and a small tsunami, it said.
“Luckily, the remote location of these earthquakes limits the potential for significant damage due to shaking,” it added.

Six Nations: Warren Gatland vows to carry on as Wales head coach
Six Nations: Warren Gatland vows to carry on as Wales head coach
Warren Gatland has vowed to carry on as Wales head coach despite their record losing run hitting a new low.
Wales are now down to 12th in the world rankings – their lowest ever position – following the 22-15 loss to Italy.
It was their 14th straight defeat, a first in Rome for 18 years and equalled their worst series of results in championship history.
But Gatland insists he is seeing enough progress and spirit in his team to remain in the firing line.
“It’s not the easiest position to be in but you have to be strong,” he replied, when asked whether he wanted to continue.
“There’s no doubt it’s challenging. You do question yourself in terms of [being able to turn things round].
“We talked [after the game] about continuing to work hard and staying tight as a group.
“Everyone is pretty frustrated, the players, staff and coaches. There’s no-one more disappointed than we are.
“We will review and highlight areas where we can still get better, and for me personally.”

Crews to begin widening one of the Charlotte area’s worst congested roads, NCDOT says
Crews to begin widening one of the Charlotte area’s worst congested roads, NCDOT says
Work is scheduled to begin Monday on the long-awaited widening of one of the Charlotte area’s worst congested roads, N.C. 150 near and on Lake Norman, state highway officials said Friday.
The work follows 40 years of complaints by residents stuck in congestion.
Crews with Charlotte-based contractor Blythe Development will remove trees and install erosion-control measures beginning Monday night between U.S. 21 and Morrison Parkway in Mooresville, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The $249 million, six-mile project will widen N.C. 150 from four to six lanes between Greenwood Road in Terrell, Catawba County, to U.S. 21 in Mooresville, Iredell County.
The contract allows Blythe to close lanes between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and do work without closures during the day.
Construction barrels line N.C. 150 from U.S. 21 to Talbert Road in Mooresville NC on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, for the long-awaited expansion of the highway to six lanes in Iredell and Catawba counties.
New bridges and intersections planned
The project also will include new bridges at Interstate 77 exit 36 — the congested N.C. 150 interchange in Mooresville. Traffic signals will be installed and upgraded and drainage improved in the project corridor.
The project also includes new intersections along N.C. 150 that should reduce congestion and wrecks by eliminating left turns from side roads onto the highway, NCDOT officials said. Raised medians will make left-turning drivers go right. In less than 1,000 feet, they’ll be able to get into a U-turn lane.
The notoriously backed-up intersection of N.C. 150 and Williamson/Bluefield roads in Mooresville near the lake also will be entirely redesigned.
Widening is expected to finish in spring 2030, state highway officials said.
It’s about time, state senator says of widening
Residents have grumbled for years about the increasingly worse traffic snarls along N.C. 150 in the counties.
“Our community has long awaited these enhancements, and we are committed to work with NCDOT as they oversee the construction,” state Sen. Vickie Sawyer, R-Iredell, said in November, when the state awarded the N.C. 150 contract.
Sawyer and Mooresville town commissioner Lisa Qualls announced the awarding of the contract.
Sawyer called the widening of the two-lane former farm-to-market route critical to alleviating chronic backups and improving safety “along one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors.”
Qualls in November thanked NCDOT “for their dedication to this project, especially considering the recent challenges posed by Hurricane Helene.” Qualls also is chairperson of the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization, which recommends road projects to the state.

Transgender rights lawsuits challenge Trump policies on passport markers, gender-affirming care for minors
Transgender rights lawsuits challenge Trump policies on passport markers, gender-affirming care for minors
Two of President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting the rights of transgender and nonbinary people face court challenges filed Friday.
A group of transgender people sued in U.S. District Court in Boston over an order that led to the halting of allowing gender markers to be changed on passports and barring the use of the “X” marker used by many nonbinary people.
The plaintiffs, represented by the ACLU, say the abrupt policy change last month did not comply with a requirement for a 60-day notice and comment ******* — and that it discriminates based on sex and, in some cases, transgender status.
A partially completed passport application, with an X gender marker, is seen on a computer monitor in Alexandria, Virginia, on April 11, 2022.

The order in question was one that Trump signed his first day back in office that said the government would recognize only people’s sex and not their gender — and defined sex as unchangeable. That position is at odds with what the American Medical Association and other mainstream medical groups say.
Also Friday, three Democratic states sued the Trump administration on over its order to ban federal funding for gender-affirming care for transgender people under 19.
Washington state Attorney General Nick Brown filed the federal lawsuit in the Western District of Washington. The attorneys general of Oregon and Minnesota, and three doctors, also joined as plaintiffs. The complaint argues that the order discriminates against transgender people.
Trump signed an executive order last month directing federally run insurance programs, including Medicaid and TRICARE for military families, to exclude coverage for such care. It also calls on the Department of Justice to pursue litigation and legislation to oppose it.
Medicaid programs in some states cover gender-affirming care. The new order suggests that the practice could end, and targets hospitals and universities that receive federal money and provide the care.
“That order poses an immediate threat to young people all across Washington state, and to the medical professionals in Washington who provide much-needed health care,” Brown said at a news conference in Seattle.
The complaint argues that the order violates equal rights protections, the separation of powers and states’ powers to regulate what is not specifically delegated to the federal government.
The development comes after families with transgender or nonbinary children filed a separate lawsuit in a Baltimore federal court earlier this week.
While the legal fights go on, some providers have halted gender-affirming care for transgender young people while officials in New York have told hospitals that it would violate the law to stop the services.
In addition to the orders on health care access and defining the sexes as unchangeable, Trump has also signed orders that open the door to banning transgender people from military service and set up new rules about how schools can teach about gender.
Trump also signed an executive order on Wednesday intended to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports.
Legal challenges have already been filed on the military order and a plan to move transgender women in federal prisons to men’s facilities. Others are likely to be filed, just as there have been challenges to a variety of Trump’s policies.
Researchers have found that fewer than 1 in 1,000 adolescents receive the care, which includes treatments such as puberty blockers, hormone treatments and surgeries — though surgery is rare for children.
As transgender people have gained visibility and acceptance in some ways, there’s been vehement pushback. At least 26 states have passed laws to restrict or ban the care for minors. The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments last year but has not yet ruled on whether Tennessee’s ban on the care is constitutional.

Meridia Experiencing a ‘Super Blockade’ in Anticipation of Incoming Illuminate Invasion
Meridia Experiencing a ‘Super Blockade’ in Anticipation of Incoming Illuminate Invasion
While many might not see Sony’s Helldivers 2 as nothing more than a game where you and your friends get to shred different monsters and creatures to a million pieces, the game actually contains a lot more than what the eye sees. This includes a deep lore that revolves around the neverending struggle of protecting democracy.
Helldivers are always pro-active when it comes to protecting democracy | Arrowhead Studios
There are many different factions in the game, ranging from the Terminids and Automatons to the latest threat, the Illuminate, which originally appeared in the first Helldivers title. While super soldiers might have the firepower to get rid of them all, given recent developments, many players seem to believe in the ‘prevention is better than cure’ philosophy instead.
An imminent threat on Meridia: How Helldivers 2 players plan to get rid of the Illuminate
Helldivers 2 players are preparing for an attack against the Illuminate | Arrowhead Studios
Out of the hundreds of planets that Super Earth’s soldiers go and fight on, there is one called the Meridia, and it is possibly about to be under attack soon with a wormhole opening up beside it.
Helldivers 2’s official subreddit has users anticipating an attack from the Illuminates. However, considering that the wormhole reveals their plan of attack early, players are taking different measures to make sure their nemesis cannot even make an appearance. These different tactics include parking your ship just outside the wormhole to form a ‘super blockade.’

The fight against the enemies of the Super Earth is neverending, and that calls for using every tactic in the book, no matter how unconventional it might be. Helldivers 2 is a game of the players, and while the developers behind the game might have messed up in the past, the future keeps looking brighter than ever for democracy.
Helldivers versus Sony: Super Soldiers are now fighting meta battles against corporates
The fight for protecting democracy never stops | Arrowhead Studios
At the very start, protecting democracy stayed a thing to be protected from the different threats of the Super Earth. Unfortunately, ever since a bad streak of bad decisions made by the publishing studio behind the game, the players have been forced to fight back more than just pesky bugs.
In May of last year, just when Helldivers 2 was at its peak, Sony decided to introduce a mandate that would require every Helldiver on PC to make a PSN account and link it to their Steam profile if they wished to continue playing. While the decision was taken back after massive backlash, access to the game was taken away from thousands of players where the service was not available.
Fortunately, the list of wins against Sony extends longer than one expects. This includes the studios’ recent decision to make the PSN mandate optional for more PlayStation titles on PC, including God of War Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us II, and more.

Six Nations 2025: Ireland braced for more Murrayfield chaos in Scotland showdown
Six Nations 2025: Ireland braced for more Murrayfield chaos in Scotland showdown
In an attempt to withstand the Scots, Easterby has reinstalled firebrand flanker Peter O’Mahony to the starting line-up for the first time since last summer.
O’Mahony has history in this fixture, and given it will be his first start since being replaced by Doris as captain, the Munster veteran will not be short of motivation.
“He loves these games, obviously he loves the Six Nations, he loves representing the nation, and he always adds something different, something a little bit special,” observed Doris.
“He’s got 110 caps, 111 tomorrow, so a wealth of experience there, and just a good fella to have around camp. Last week, he was great even though he wasn’t involved.
“There is a bit of an added edge from him this week as well. He’s always someone who I enjoy having alongside me in the back row.”
O’Mahony’s return adds even more know-how to an Irish side packed with experience, the 23-man matchday squad totalling 1,220 caps compared with Scotland’s 864. Fly-half Sam Prendergast is the outlier. It will be the 21-year-old’s first away game for Ireland and Scotland will undoubtedly set out to unsettle him.
Ireland’s experience told against England, especially during a dominant second half when Jack Conan and Dan Sheehan made huge impacts off the bench.
Not short of Test experience either, Scotland are also hardened by previous pain at Irish hands. Townsend set up defensively in Dublin last year, but stirred by the home crowd, his side may go all-out to make it another frantic afternoon for Ireland.
It will not be anything Ireland have not encountered in the Scottish capital before.
Navigate the mayhem once more and they will be this weekend’s big winners.

Nearly 500,000 Units of This Popular Kitchen Appliance Sold at Costco Is Being Recalled Nationwide—Here’s What to Know
LG is recalling nearly 500,000 units of Slide-In and Freestanding Electric Ranges due to a potentially harmful technical hazard. The official report, which was published by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), notes an issue with the recalled units’ front-mounting knobs, as they can be activated accidentally through contact with humans, children or pets. The issue poses a direct fire hazard for those who may have these units in their possession.
This recall specifically names both the LG Slide-In Ranges and the Freestanding Ranges with front-mounting knobs. Exact model and serial numbers can be found here, and users can find them located inside of the oven doors or storage drawers located on the bottom of the ovens. The units in question were manufactured in Mexico and Korea before being imported to the United States via LG Electronics USA Inc. in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. They were sold at Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s and other appliance stores nationwide and online.

While the official recall notice (published on February 6) calls for repair as a remedy, consumers are urged to contact LG for a free warning label and placement instructions. The label reminds consumers to use the Lock Out/Control Lock function on the range control panel to disable activation of the heating elements while the range is not in use. Additionally, LG has provided consumers an instructional video regarding the Control Lock/Lock Out feature.
Those who have one of these models at home are cautioned to keep children and pets away from the knobs, and to check the range periodically in order to ensure the knobs are, in fact, turned off before leaving home or going to bed. LG also encouraged users not to leave objects on the range while it is not in use. Depending on the model, these ranges are said to have been sold from 2015 through January 2025 for anywhere between $1,400 and $2,650.

So far, the CPSC has received around 86 reports of unintentional activation of the front-mounted knobs. The LG ranges identified in the recall have also been responsible for more than 28 fires, with at least five fires leading to extensive property damage totaling over $340,000. There have been at least eight minor injuries reported, including burns, and three reports of fires that resulted in the unfortunate death of pets.
Those with further questions or concerns can contact LG at 800-399-3265 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by email at *****@*****.tld. These individuals can also enter their information at to request a free warning sticker, instructions on where to place it and how to use the Control Lock or Lock Out feature on their range.
