Irish boxer John Cooney dies a week after title fight Irish boxer John Cooney dies a week after title fight Irish boxer John Cooney has died a week after being taken into intensive care following his Celtic super-featherweight title defeat to Nathan Howells in Belfast. The death of the 28-year-old Cooney was announced on Saturday in a statement published by his promoter Mark Dunlop on behalf of the Cooney family and his fiancee Emmaleen. “After a week of battling for his life John Cooney has sadly passed away,” the statement said. “He was a much loved son, brother and partner and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was. RIP John ‘the Kid’ Cooney.” Cooney’s fight with Howells was stopped in the ninth round at Ulster Hall. Cooney subsequently underwent surgery after it was discovered he had an intracranial hemorrhage. “Mr. and Mrs. Cooney and his fiancee Emmaleen would like to thank the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital who have worked tirelessly to save John’s life and for everyone who has sent messages of support and prayers,” the statement said. The bout with Welsh boxer Howells was Cooney’s first defence of the Celtic super-featherweight title. Cooney won the title with a win over Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023, but spent a year out of the ring with a hand injury. He returned in October with a victory over Tampela Maharusi. 8. Aldi expansion grows to 3 Las Vegas valley locations Aldi expansion grows to 3 Las Vegas valley locations LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — When fans found out Aldi was going to open a store in Henderson, there was a buzz in the community but very little information from the grocery chain based in Batavia, Illinois. Now, as the opening of that store draws nearer at 611 Marks St. — next to the Best Buy near the Galleria at Sunset mall — two more locations are taking shape in the Las Vegas valley. The opening dates have become a bit of a mystery. Information earlier this week on Google Maps was not confirmed by Aldi officials, but suggested that all three locations would open on April 16. The date, which has now been removed from Google Maps, seemed unlikely as construction continues at a North Las Vegas location (Craig Road and Clayton Street) and a southwest valley location (Rainbow Boulevard at Arby Avenue). A crew works on the exterior of a building at Craig Road and Clayton Street in North Las Vegas on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. (Greg Haas / 8NewsNow) A crew works on the exterior of a building at Craig Road and Clayton Street in North Las Vegas on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. (Greg Haas / 8NewsNow) Aldi officials responded to questions emailed on Tuesday with this statement on Friday: “We are excited to share that our stores in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas are expected to open later this spring. We have lots of fun plans coming to the market so as we get closer to the opening, we’ll be sure to reach back out with more details on the new stores.”-Shawn Eddy, Moreno Valley Divisional Vice President at ALDI When the Henderson location was revealed in documents filed with the city, plans showed the store taking over a portion of a closed Bed, Bath and Beyond location. The North Las Vegas plan is similar, occupying a little more than half of a former 24 Hour Fitness location. The third location appears to be in a new building in the fast-growing southwest valley. Grocery Outlet Bargain Market expands in Henderson, customers hope for affordable options Aldi is known as a no-frills store with good deals on its own branded products, building a following from loyal customers across the U.S. Aldi claims it can save shoppers up to 40% on their grocery bill. In March, the company announced it would expand with 800 new stores over a five-year *******. It will be a new experience for a lot of shoppers when the Las Vegas locations begin to open. Aldi prides itself on thrifty innovations — like its system to deposit a quarter to use a grocery cart, and then getting the quarter back when you put it back. But mostly, it’s about the thrift. The chain requires reusable bags (it sells its own) and it shelves groceries in their original shipping boxes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 12. Next God Of War Title Will Reportedly Feature A Young Kratos’ Journey Back To Greece Next God Of War Title Will Reportedly Feature A Young Kratos’ Journey Back To Greece -Foxtrot6m ago(Edited 5m ago) Of all the comments I’ve made here, to try and, what? “get one over me” I guess, this is the one you’ve picked? “Knowing how you hate Atreus and being claiming Sony to bring Kratos back to his vengeful/brutal ways” First of all, I don’t “hate” him, I just think his arc was done at the end of Ragnarök, he was fine when he was a young kid that helped Kratos along with his new character development but much like young kids in TV shows, as they get older they lose that appeal, especially trying to lead something solo. He’s fine as a side character but his own levels and own leading game? No thanks. It’s God of War, you want to see Kratos. Secondly what do they have in common? So not liking a character to you is the same as automatically wanting young Kratos back in Greece? I’ve never even said I wanted him back to his vengeful brutal ways like ever… Yeah so this comment by you is so bizarre, like I understand if you were a huge God of War fan and angry I’ve called or criticized something you love to death but you couldn’t give a s*** This comment is nothing more than a dig to me personally, probably because I’ve called you (and your MANY alts) out in the past and you’re probably hoping you get a small win where your agree ratio is more than your disagree ratio for once but we all know what you’re doing here. You don’t care for God of War, you don’t care for Playstation, you don’t care for Sony so why are you even here? 13. When will flu season end? When will flu season end? (NEXSTAR) – With all the people coughing, sneezing and calling out sick around you, it’s probably pretty clear we’re in the thick of flu season. Flu activity remains “very high” in most states, the Centers for Disease Control said this week, as illnesses, emergency room visits and hospitalizations all continue to trend upward. That will eventually change, and peak flu season will end, but it’s difficult to predict exactly when. That’s because there is no precise start and end of flu season. Diseases don’t respect calendar date cut-offs. That being said, most cases of influenza occur between October and May. The flu season feels worse than normal this year. Is it? Flu activity typically peaks before we get late into spring. According to the CDC, the most common time for influenza to reach its peak in the U.S. is February (which explains the feeling that everyone seems to be sick right now). The peak can also come sooner or later. The second-most common month for flu activity to reach its height is December. January and March are tied for third. Flu activity typically tapers off as we move out of winter and into spring, but the virus is still detected year-round. This year, flu activity appears to be returning to pre-pandemic levels. Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said that can give us the illusion that it’s an especially bad season. CVS gives customers a way to get into locked cabinets “I think a lot of people have been acclimatized to relatively mild flu seasons the last several years, because the COVID-19 pandemic really disrupted the circulation of flu,” Adalja told Nexstar. “This season has been more on par with with seasons that we saw pre-COVID. It’s sort of going back to resembling what we used to have in 2018-19, which people have long forgotten about.” While experts say the best time to get vaccinated against influenza is in the fall, it’s not too late. The flu vaccine can still offer protection against getting sick and severe illness. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
