We produce some of the finest talent there is. From the film and television industry, to theatre, sport and news broadcasting – British excellence can and should be broadcast. Yet it is fair to ask whether the public broadcaster is fit for purpose. Could the concept be improved? Is the funding model sustainable? Does there need to be more scrutiny of impartiality? One of the most disturbing developments is the increasing politicisation of the BBC. For a football pundit, on a taxpayer-funded salary of £1.3 million, to rant about immigration policy on social media and compare it to “Nazi Germany”, is unacceptable. Not only was such an episode outrageous, but it tested the public’s patience and detracted from all the good work the BBC can do. Take the sports coverage the BBC airs. This includes all kinds of pursuits from grassroots rugby to indoor bowls. The boffins at other media networks may think giving airtime to these various sporting codes is commercially unviable, which is entirely their prerogative as the pursuit of profit defines all they do. But a sport can only grow if it can be promoted, and that entails it being seen. A public service broadcaster can meet this need. The Wimbledon championships, broadcast around the world, epitomise this. The sporting talent, the insightful commentary, the strawberries and cream, and the Wimbledon whites are a fixture of the English summer and are wonderfully showcased by the BBC. Wimbledon was first televised on the BBC in 1937 and has been so ever since, making the tournament the longest-running partnership between a sporting event and broadcaster. And what about the joy of listening to the BBC’s Test Match Special? Listeners receive hours of information and entertainment thanks to a charming mix of humour and expert analysis. The promotion of the British countryside and rural living is also a great BBC endeavour. Programmes like Countryfile, Landward, and Springwatch all celebrate our natural world. Meanwhile, Farming Today remains important for those of us with an interest in agriculture. All of this is exported around the world. So, too, is the BBC World Service, which provides a trusted news source to places which crave just that. The BBC is capable of world-class work, but that doesn’t mean a discussion about future funding is not needed. In a technologically savvy world, where most have a smartphone in their pocket or multiple devices in the one household, the appetite to consume content has increased. New entrants in the market have soaked up this demand in the form of streaming services. Yet according to the latest Westminster speculation, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is now thinking of slapping the licence fee on people who never view live TV and only watch the likes of Netflix or Disney+. A new report, “Outdated, Outpaced and Out of Touch”, from Defund the BBC, suggests that the Corporation finds itself at a critical juncture, perhaps facing an “adapt or die” moment. Increasingly the taxpayer questions the value in continually pumping money into a BBC which does not reflect their viewing habits. The TV licence is, for all intents and purposes, another tax many are unenthusiastic about paying. So how can we guarantee “our” BBC and enhance the product on offer for Britons in a world of endless technological disruption? The BBC has enough talent to be able to compete fairly in today’s streaming world. Surely the final destination must be a BBC which reflects the expectations of the public in both value and product, and above all, offers British excellence. However, the harmful chemicals they contain do more than kill the bad bugs. What’s happening? According to a study from Queen Mary University of London published in the Science of the Total Environment journal, the neonicotinoid pesticide clothianidin has a devastating impact on bees. Exposure can lead to issues in the brain, legs, and kidney-like tissues, with varying effects leading to severe consequences. Researchers found that 82% of gene activity changes following exposure were tissue-specific. “Seeing impacts of pesticide exposure across the body helps to explain the multi-faceted problems that exposed bees have, from impaired movement to reduced learning ability and compromised immunity,” professor Yannick Wurm said. The surge in installations meant China hit its 2030 target six years ahead of schedule, underscoring the speed of its clean energy rollout at a time when President Donald Trump has pulled the United States out of the Paris climate deal for a second time and pledged to make it easier to drill for oil and gas. China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said together with China’s energy administration it had issued “market-oriented” changes to policies intended to encourage clean energy projects. The NDRC said China’s clean energy capacity of all kinds had reached more than 40% of the economy’s total energy generation capacity, in part because of the support of a system that guaranteed prices for renewable energy sold to the grid. “The cost of new energy development has dropped significantly compared to earlier stages,” the NDRC said in a statement. The agency said any new projects completed after June this year would face payments for electricity based on “market-based bidding”. The NDRC said it expected there would be no impact on the price for residential users and farming and that power prices would be “basically the same” for industrial and commercial operations after the change took effect. The NDRC said it would work with local governments across China on the implementation of the plan. It did not provide details of the pricing formula it would introduce. Less generous subsidies for new solar farms could add pressure on China’s solar industry, where overcapacity relative to global demand has sent prices for solar panels plunging and threatened to drive smaller producers into bankruptcy. Deflationary pressures are likely to persist in China this year, analysts say, unless policymakers can rekindle sluggish domestic demand, with tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump on ******** goods adding pressure on Beijing to spur growth in the world’s second-largest economy. The consumer price index rose 0.5% last month from a year earlier, quickening from December’s 0.1% gain, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Sunday, above the 0.4% rise estimate in a Reuters poll of economists. Core inflation, excluding volatile prices for food and fuel, sped up to 0.6% in January from 0.4% the previous month. Although consumer prices are expected to rise gradually, producer prices are unlikely to return to positive territory in the short term as overcapacity in industrial goods persists, said Xu Tianchen, senior economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit. “If measured by the GDP deflator, it will still take a few quarters to get out of deflation, ” Xu said. The numbers were skewed by seasonal factors, as the Lunar New Year, China’s biggest annual holiday, began in January this year versus February last year. Typically, prices rise as consumers stockpile goods, particularly food for big family gatherings. Prices of airplane tickets rose 8.9% from a year earlier, tourism inflation was 7.0% and movie and performance ticket prices rose 11.0%. Consumer spending reports over the holidays were mixed, reflecting worries over wage and job security. While ******** flocked to movie theatres and spent more on shopping, catering and domestic travel, per capita spending during the holidays grew by only 1.2% from a year earlier, versus a 9.4% rise in 2024, analysts at ANZ estimated. CPI edged up 0.7% in January from the previous month, below the forecast 0.8% rise and compared with an unchanged outcome in December. For 2024, CPI rose 0.2%, in line with the previous year’s pace and well below the official target of around 3% for last year, suggesting inflation missed annual targets for the 13th straight year. China’s provinces have announced 2025 economic growth targets with the average of target prices below 3%, showing that policymakers are anticipating changes and pressures on the price level, said Bruce Pang, adjunct associate professor at CUHK Business School. China’s manufacturing unexpectedly contracted in January, while services activity weakened, keeping alive calls for more stimulus. Beijing is widely expected to retain its economic growth forecast of around 5% this year, but fresh U.S. tariffs will put stress on exports, one of the few bright spots in the economy last year. The producer price index declined 2.3% on year in January, matching December’s drop and deeper than the forecast 2.1% fall. Factory-gate prices have remained deflationary for 28 straight months. The government is not expected to change monetary or fiscal policy before the annual parliament session in March, said Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management. “For policymakers, external uncertainty seems to rank higher than domestic economic challenges at this stage,” Zhang added.
