Japan PM Ishiba, after meeting Trump, optimistic over averting tariffs
Japan PM Ishiba, after meeting Trump, optimistic over averting tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump gifts Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba a book during a joint press conference in the East Room at the White House on February 07, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed optimism on Sunday that his country could avoid higher U.S. tariffs, saying President Donald Trump had “recognised” Japan’s huge investment in the U.S. and the American jobs that it creates.
At his first White House summit on Friday, Ishiba told public broadcaster NHK, he explained to Trump how many Japanese automakers were creating jobs in the United States.
The two did not specifically discuss auto tariffs, Ishiba said, although he said he did not know whether Japan would be subject to the reciprocal tariffs that Trump has said he plans to impose on imports.
Tokyo has so far escaped the trade war Trump unleashed in his first weeks in office. He has announced tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China, although he postponed the 25% duties on his North American neighbours to allow for talks.
The escalating trade tensions since Trump returned to the White House on January 20 threaten to rupture the global economy.
Ishiba said he believes Trump “recognised the fact Japan has been the world’s largest investor in the United States for five straight years, and is therefore different from other countries.”
“Japan is creating many U.S. jobs. I believe (Washington) won’t go straight to the idea of higher tariffs,” he said.
Ishiba voiced optimism that Japan and the U.S. can avoid a ****-for-tat tariff war, stressing that tariffs should be put in place in a way that “benefits both sides”.
“Any action that exploits or excludes the other side won’t last,” Ishiba said. “The question is whether there is any problem between Japan and the United States that warrants imposing higher tariffs,” he added.
Japan had the highest foreign direct investment in the United States in 2023 at $783.3 billion, followed by Canada and Germany, according to the most recent U.S. Commerce Department data.
Trump pressed Ishiba to close Japan’s $68.5 billion annual trade surplus with Washington but expressed optimism this could be done quickly, given a promise by Ishiba to bring Japanese investment in the U.S. to $1 trillion.
On Sunday, Ishiba identified liquefied natural gas, steel, AI and autos as areas that Japanese companies could invest in.
He also touched on Trump’s promise to look at Nippon Steel investing in U.S. Steel , as opposed to buying the storied American company — a planned purchase opposed by Trump and blocked by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“Investment is being made to ensure that it remains an American company. It will continue to operate under American management, with American employees,” Ishiba said. “The key point is how to ensure it remains an American company.
From President Trump’s perspective, this is of utmost importance.” On military spending, another area where Trump has pressed allies for increases, Ishiba said Japan would not increase its defence budget without first winning public backing. “It is crucial to ensure that what is deemed necessary is something the taxpayers can understand and support,” he said.

Ghostpia Nintendo Switch physical release set for Japan with English support, pre-orders open
WTMG’s Ghostpia: “This story isn’t finished, but the first season of Ghostpia has enthralled and entranced me. I want to know more, to figure it all out, and to see if I’m correct in my theories. I want to hear more music, explore more boundaries, see Clara and Mr. Patel and the highly upsetting Renja continue their story. As off kilter of a “game” as this might be, it’s nonetheless a heady dose of high strangeness, a cafe blend of Twin Peaks meets Watamote with a fair dash of When Our Journey Ends and just a touch of existential crisis. Like a great book, it leaves you filled, curious, and eager for more. The yearning for explanation, for connection, and the very real taste of loneliness cloaked in dry humor is what will keep me waiting at the station. The next train will surely bring me home.”

Rico the Fox declares that no safe is safe in this new word puzzler, out now
Rico the Fox declares that no safe is safe in this new word puzzler, out now
Hundreds of levels to take on
Timed or Casual mode
Progressively difficult puzzles
Karios Games has officially launched Rico the Fox, the studio’s family-friendly puzzle adventure on Android and iOS. I feel like the titular fox’s adorable fluffiness and big, green eyes alone can already capture players from the get-go – but speaking of capturing, it seems like Rico himself can expertly evade just that thanks to his cunning wit and “no safe is safe” mentality.
In Rico the Fox, you can look forward to testing your puzzling prowess across hundreds of challenging levels, with progressively increasing difficulty as you go along. There’s a variety of modes you can tinker around with too if you’d like to customise your experience, whether that’s putting on the pressure in the Timed mode or going at your own pace in the Casual mode.
“We’re thrilled to bring Rico the Fox to mobile players worldwide,” says Marios Karagiannis, CEO of Karios Games. “This game embodies our passion for crafting immersive and visually captivating experiences, and we can’t wait for players to embark on Rico’s adventure.”
There’s a handy hint system too and the ability to play even while you’re offline, which, to me, makes it a great timewaster for when you’re on the daily commute or in line at the supermarket.
Does that sound like something that’s right up your alley? Why not take a look at our list of the best puzzlers on iOS for something similar?
In the meantime, if you’re eager to join in on all the fun, you can do so by downloading Rico the Fox from the App Store and on Google Play. It’s free-to-play with ads.
You can also join the community of followers on the official YouTube channel to stay updated on all the latest developments, visit the official website, or take a little peek at the embedded clip above to get a feel of the vibes and visuals.

Nicholson solos to Warrnambool Cycling Classic win
Nicholson solos to Warrnambool Cycling Classic win
A well-timed solo attack inside the last 35km has given South *********** Katelyn Nicholson the win at the women’s Warrnambool Cycling Classic.
The 25-year-old rider with the Butterfield Ziptrak team finished 47 seconds ahead of British rider Frankie Hall (Praties) and *********** Josephine Pepper (Duda) was one minute 38 seconds behind the winner in third.
At 155.7km, the “Women’s Warrny” is billed as the world’s longest one-day race for women. Nicholson is the first rider to win in under four hours since the current race format was introduced in 2022, clocking three hours 51 minutes 37 seconds.
Victoria’s windy conditions on Sunday meant fast times as the race headed from Colac to Warrnambool.
*********** Talia Appleton (Praties) finished fifth to retain her lead after two races in the new ProVelo Super League, which has taken over as the top domestic road cycling series.
Nicholson was fourth last month in the road race and the time trial at Perth’s *********** road championships, but did not finish Adelaide’s Down Under Classic.
She also won the road race last year at the Oceania championships and will head to Italy this April with the Down Under Development team.
Nicholson and teammate Alii Appelton were in a five-rider break that had formed after 100km.
Appleton told Nicholson over the team radio “you gotta go” and she duly made the race-winning move.
“She is a very experienced racer, so I took a flyer and just had to hope for the best,” Nicholson said.
“When I looked back I got a gap and I just had to trust the training and the work that I’d put in, and try and pull it off for the girls … it’s very exciting to do it.”
On Saturday, Blake Agnoletto won the men’s Melbourne to Warrnambool, with former Sydney AFL player Ryan O’Keeffe finishing second in the 35-44 age group.

Resurgent Smith runs hot to be named player of series
Resurgent Smith runs hot to be named player of series
Steve Smith has been named player of the series for his role in steering Australia to a 2-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka in Galle.
The stand-in captain beat out the series’ leading wicket-taker Matt Kuhnemann (16) to claim the honour after Australia clinched a nine-wicket win in the second Test on the morning of day four.
Smith underlined his status as Australia’s master of the subcontinent, scoring two centuries from as many innings on the tour.
He made 272 runs at an average of 136 to finish as the second-top run-scorer in the series.
The 35-year-old would have sat atop the standings if veteran opener Usman Khawaja (295) had not had a second chance to bat in the match-sealing run chase on Sunday.
Smith blasted 141 runs in his first knock as Australia made the most of winning the toss in the first Test, slapping their way to victory by an innings and 242 runs.
But his second ton (131) was arguably more important in the second match as Australia sought to close out a series whitewash.
Smith came to the crease when Australia were in trouble at 2-37 on day two, having lost both Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne cheaply.
He stabilised the tourists’ reply to Sri Lanka’s 257 and forged a 259-run partnership with Alex Carey (156) that ultimately proved decisive in the closer second match.
It’s been quite the turnaround for Smith, who was lukewarm in his stint as an opener to finish the 2023-24 summer, and managed only 19 runs across his first three innings in the recent home series against India.
But Smith has now scored centuries in four of his past five Tests, and watched as records tumbled during the Sri Lanka series.
On day one of the first Test, he reached the coveted 10,000-run milestone after memorably finishing the home summer one run short.
Only Allan Border, Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh have also made five figures with the bat among *********** Test players.
Smith also became Australia’s leading run-scorer in Asia (1994) and the first non-wicketkeeping *********** to reach 200 catches during the second Test.
Additionally, the right-hander has scored more centuries (seven) in Asia than any of his countrymen.
Smith’s tactical nous was also on show in his first full series as captain since the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering saga. Regular skipper Pat Cummins missed the series with an ankle injury and to attend the birth of his child.
Kuhnemann memorably called Smith a “genius” during the first Test for his ability to set perfect fields in the spinning conditions, a skill that stood out all the more for the struggles of Sri Lankan counterpart Dhananjaya de Silva.

Civilization 7 is Coming to VR for the First Time Ever
Civilization 7 is Coming to VR for the First Time Ever
In just a couple of days, players worldwide will get their hands on the long-awaited release of Civilization 7 (stylised as Civilization VII). It has been almost a decade since the last major release in the Civ series, and fans are understandably very excited for the chance to drive empires forward once again.
Recently, an entirely new perspective on the Civilization series was revealed – a VR version of Civ 7. It’s being developed by PlaySide Studios and 2K in collaboration with Firaxis and it’s coming to Meta Quest 3 and 3S in the spring.
Truly Immersive
Firaxis, PlaySide, and 2K worked to release a new trailer for Civilization 7, this one surprisingly showcasing a never-before-seen VR version of the game:
The world of VR has gone from strength to strength of late. The technology is sharpening, price points are dropping slightly, and the library of games and apps available on the best headsets is forever expanding. It’s still a tentative area for some, but some developers are investing much more in the technology, which is great for those who love the immersion.
This is the first time in history that a Civilization game has been available on VR platforms, and it’s coming exclusively to Meta Quest 3 and 3S – which isn’t an unheard of thing these days. These headsets dominate the market, and as a Quest 3 owner, I can say that they’re generally the cream of the crop.
The trailer shows exactly how this’ll work, with a unique UI and configuration created solely for VR users to enjoy the relatively complex experience that Civilization 7 promises to offer. Given how long the average game of Civ 7 lasts, it could be pretty exhausting and you might need an external battery on your headset, but those are choices for you to make.
Do you think you’ll pick up Civilization 7 on Meta Quest? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum.

Debutant Dixon fires for Vics against Tasmania
Debutant Dixon fires for Vics against Tasmania
First-class debutant Harry Dixon has blasted three huge sixes on his way to a half-century that helped Victoria to a first-innings lead over Tasmania in their Sheffield Shield clash.
Dixon was the star with the bat on day two in Hobart, belting 66 from 73 deliveries in an impressive knock that included seven fours.
The 19-year-old arrived at the crease with Victoria in some trouble at 4-80, but put on 88 for the fifth wicket with Tom Rogers (33).
Tailender Sam Elliott (30 not out) stepped up to lift Victoria past the hosts’ first innings tally as they were bowled out for 258, with a lead of 22 runs.
Right-arm quicks Kieran Elliott (4-55) and Gabe Bell (3-33) were Tasmania’s main wicket-takers.
In reply, Tasmania erased the deficit for the loss of just one wicket as they reached 1-43 by stumps, with a lead of 21.
Jake Weatherald (26no) and Tim Ward (13no) will resume at the crease on day three at Bellerive Oval.
Peter Siddle (1-14) struck an early blow for Victoria when he trapped Nivethan Radhakrishnan lbw for one.
It completed a disappointing match with the bat for the inexperienced opener, who was brilliantly run out by Campbell Kellaway for 14 in Tasmania’s first innings.
Dixon was the second debutant to post a half-century in the match after fellow teenager Aidan O’Neill top-scored with 53 in Tasmania’s first dig.
The match is important to Victoria’s chances of reaching next month’s Shield final and crucial to Tasmania’s chances of keeping their season alive.
Victoria sit second on the table with 28.06 points, just behind leaders South Australia (29.93), while Tasmania (18.65) are last with just one win from six matches.

Warning to federal Labor Party after Victorian by-elections
Warning to federal Labor Party after Victorian by-elections
Federal Labor has the same lessons to learn as Victorian Labor following two state by-elections, a former Victorian Labor strategist has warned.
As of Sunday afternoon, Victorian Labor is just ahead of the Liberals in the race for the state seat of Werribee in Melbourne’s greater southwest.
Formerly a safe Labor seat with deep working class roots, fewer than 450 votes separated the parties’ candidates.
Kos Samaras, who spent more than a decade working on Victorian Labor campaigns, said there was no longer a so-called “red wall” but instead a “red barb wire fence”.
Camera IconMajor polls have shown the Albanese government is facing a tough fight in the looming federal election. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia
“Labor has just recorded its lowest primary vote in a seat they have held at any by-election in Victoria’s *history,” Mr Samaras posted on X.
“If I were a Labor MP sitting in what was once a safe seat, I’d be doing one of two things: planning my retirement or treating my electorate as a critical marginal.”
Mr Samaras said the only “silver lining for Labor” was that the Liberal Party was disliked more in “in Melbourne’s growth corridors”.
“But for the Liberals, the challenge is now undeniable, they are hitting a demographic wall that must be overcome, and fast,” he said.
“Winning 17 seats without breaking through in these parts of Melbourne will be very very difficult.
“Of course, the Liberals’ task may end up being much easier if some in Labor continue burying their heads in the sand over their deepening disconnect with their base.
“A special shoutout to those who dismissed the warnings over the years, you now share responsibility for the mess that comes with losing a once-loyal political voter base.”
Labor did not even put up a candidate in the inner-Melbourne seat of Prahran, which the Greens have conceded to the Liberals.
Mr Samaras’ assessment also rang true to Amy Remeikis, chief political analyst at the Australia Institute.
Camera IconAustralia Institute chief political analyst Amy Remeikis says ‘anger’ at anger at the Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan’s government is largely to blame. NewsWire / David Geraghty Credit: News Corp Australia
She told NewsWire that while it was a “fool’s game to take a by-election and apply it to a general election”, she said that “the result would have federal Labor worried”.
“The Liberals are obviously improving their electoral fortunes in Victoria and Labor can no longer take Victoria for granted – although much of this looks like anger at the Allan government, which would also be worried by these results,” Ms Remeikas said.
She said it only added to the likelihood of federal Labor returning to govern in ********* — as polls have indicated for several months.
Ms Remeikis also said waning political engagement was at the core of the results.
She said there was “a lot going on in the world and in a cost of living crisis, people are just trying to survive the best they can” and there “doesn’t seem to be a lot to get inspired about”.
It is unclear when Anthony Albanese will call the federal election for, but the deadline for doing so is May 17.

Redbacks quick McAndrew nabs 7-11 in WA Shield win
Redbacks quick McAndrew nabs 7-11 in WA Shield win
Paceman Nathan McAndrew has taken a remarkable 7-11 to lead South Australia to a crushing six-wicket Sheffield Shield win over defending champions Western Australia at the WACA Ground.
A remarkable 20 wickets fell on the opening day on Saturday, with WA skittled for 120 before SA were dismissed for 124.
There was even more carnage on Sunday, with Western Australia slumping to 5-13 before being rolled for 66 within the space of a session.
It left South Australia with a meagre victory target of 63, and the visitors rocketed to the total before tea on day two, with Jason Sangha (24 not out) and opener Conor McInerney (23) leading the way.
WA entered the round in fourth spot, and the heavy loss has put a huge dent in their hopes of snaring a fourth consecutive Sheffield Shield crown.
The Warriors only have three more matches to resurrect their season, and they could be fifth by the end of the current round.
Ladder leaders South Australia, with four wins and two draws from six matches, are in the box seat to host the Shield final.
McAndrew only snared one wicket in WA’s first innings, but the 31-year-old was unstoppable on Sunday on the way to career-best figures.
The Redbacks’ first-innings lead of just four runs didn’t seem like much at the time, but WA lost three second-innings wickets before they were able to erase the deficit.
The Warriors were 2-0 and 3-2 as Sam Fanning (0), Teague Wyllie (0) and Jayden Goodwin (two) all fell in the blink of an eye.
Fanning and Wyllie were caught at slip, while Goodwin edged McAndrew through to the wicketkeeper.
Hilton Cartwright (two) was the next to fall when McAndrew pulled off a brilliant, one-handed catch while falling to the ground off his own bowling.
And McAndrew had the remarkable figures of 4-2 from 3.2 overs when Joel Curtis (one) edged him behind in the seventh over of the innings.
WA were 5-13 at that point, and in danger of not passing the lowest ever Shield total – the 27 South Australia posted against NSW in Sydney in 1955.
Ashton Turner (30 off 36 ******) and Keaton Critchell (11 off 52) combined for a 39-run stand to at least steer WA away from setting any all-time lows.
But it was only a momentary reprieve, with McAndrew and Jordan Buckingham (3-27) racing through the middle order and tail to ensure WA didn’t even last the session.
WA’s poor Shield display continued a worrying trend this summer.
In October, they suffered a collapse of 8-1 in a One Day Cup loss to Tasmania that all but ended their hopes of defending their crown in that format.
