The latest weapon in the military’s arsenal? Ground drones. Other types of drones have already proven critical to Ukraine during the war, and it has used them to take the fight to the enemy — along the front lines and beyond. Russia has likewise sent men and machines into the fray, wielding its own army of drones on Ukrainian soil. Amid this fast-changing environment, Ukraine is now aiming to use ground drones — also known as unmanned ground vehicles, or UGVs — to help its military carry out key tasks and keep more of its soldiers safe. WATCH | In Ukraine, civilians worry about danger hovering above their heads: Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov says the military will “scale up” its UGV use for a variety of purposes, including supplying soldiers and transporting the wounded, as well as other tasks. This followed a forecast from Mykhailo Fedorov, the country’s minister of digital transformation, that Ukraine needs to field tens of thousands of these tools this year. “Ukrainians are certainly keen on using more and more of these, rather than soldiers,” said Samuel Bendett, an advisor with the Russia Studies program at CNA, a research and analysis organization in Washington. But Russia is also vying for a UGV-driven advantage and its forces are trying out a variety of new tools. Experimentation in real time Bendett said the UGVs rolling out in Ukraine have followed the same path the most widely used aerial drones have taken: They’re tending toward cheaper, smaller models that can be built quickly, tested on the fly and easily replaced when destroyed. “That’s why Ukrainians are talking about tens of thousands of them [being unleashed],” said Bendett, pointing out that larger, more expansive ground systems are generally going to be harder to defend and more expensive to lose. (Sofiia Gatilova/Reuters) A high level of experimentation is being tolerated, he said, partially out of necessity for getting soldiers what they need on the front lines. “It’s a matter of life and death,” said Bendett, who keeps a close watch on emerging drone models being used in Ukraine. The urgency for soldiers to get their hands on these tools is the same on the Russian side. Bendett said he’s seen “lots of stories in the Russian media about soldiers fielding UGVs they built themselves.” A long time coming “UGVs are hardly new,” said Mick Ryan, a retired *********** army major general, pointing to the ******* use of devices called Goliaths during the Second World War. Peter Samsonov, an author and creator of the Tank Archives blog, said via email that during that same era, the Soviets had a “tankette,” which was like the Goliaths. And there were other weapons similar to what’s rolling out on Ukraine’s battlefield today, he said. “Another precursor worth mentioning is the Soviet teletank, which was controlled remotely by radio rather than cables and was reusable,” Samsonov said, noting these particular machines were complex to maintain and operate, so few were produced. But he says it wasn’t until the current war in Ukraine that the broad potential for UGVs was recognized — after drones showed what they could do in the air and also at sea. Ryan says their utility has been sharply demonstrated in the past year, with UGVs being used in “a really, really wide variety of missions.” “This isn’t just killer robots — it’s partially that, but they’re in the ********* at the moment.” CNA’s Bendett agrees, noting that a lot of UGVs “are not used in actual combat, but used in supply roles.” But there are multiple media reports about a Ukrainian offensive in December, near Lyptsi, Ukraine, which reportedly involved a combination of UGVs and FPV drones. Keeping soldiers safe After three years of nationwide war, Ukraine remains under significant pressure: The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War estimates that Russia controls roughly 112,307 square kilometres — or more than 18 per cent of Ukraine’s territory — as of Thursday. Ukraine is fighting against an opponent with a much larger population from which it can draft recruits, and Kyiv has been reluctant to mobilize its youngest adults to join the war. So those Ukrainians already engaged in the fight are considered highly important to the war effort. Trump, who has promised to end the war in Ukraine but not yet set out in public how he would do so, said last week that the war was a bloodbath and that his team had had “some very good talks”. In an interview aboard Air Force One on Friday Trump told the New York Post that he had “better not say,” when asked how many times he and Putin had spoken. “He (Putin) wants to see people stop dying,” Trump told the New York Post. Reuters reported in November that Putin is open to discussing a Ukraine peace deal with Trump but rules out making any major territorial concessions and insists Kyiv abandon ambitions to join NATO. The Kremlin has repeatedly urged caution over speculation about contacts with the Trump team over a possible peace deal. Leonid Slutsky, head of the Russian parliament’s international affairs committee, was cited by the state RIA news agency on Thursday as saying that preparations for such a meeting were at “an advanced stage” and that it could take place in February or March. Putin last spoke to former U.S. President Joe Biden in February 2022, shortly before Putin ordered thousands of troops into Ukraine. The two leaders spoke for about an hour then, the Kremlin said. Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward, in his 2024 book “War”, reported that Trump had direct conversations as many as seven times with Putin after he left the White House in 2021. Asked if that were true in an interview to Bloomberg last year, Trump said: “If I did, it’s a smart thing.” The Kremlin denied Woodward’s report. On Friday, Trump said he would probably meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy next week to discuss ending the war. Gavin Newsom signed laws Friday setting aside $50 million to help the state protect its policies from challenges by the Trump administration and defend immigrants amid the president’s mass-deportation plans. One of the laws allocates $25 million for the state Department of Justice to fight legal battles against the federal government, and another sets aside $25 million in part for legal groups to defend immigrants facing possible deportation. The new findings detail a method to measure the force of laser light on what are known as “ultrathin membranes.” This is research that could help advance the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative’s vision of laser-driven space travel. Launched in 2016 by the late Stephen Hawking and tech investor Yuri Milner, Breakthrough Starshot aims to send miniature probes to Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to Earth. The plan relies on high-powered lasers on Earth pushing delicate sail-driven probes in the cosmos like the wind does for sailboats here on the planet, allowing the craft to achieve record-breaking speeds without the need for a chemical propellant. Lightsails are a more generic form of solar sail, in that they use radiation pressure from a light source to generate propulsion. Radiation pressure is the transfer of momentum from radiation striking a surface like the wind does to canvas sails here on Earth. Photons have no mass, but they still transfer some of their momentum when they hit an object, pushing it ever so slightly. A single photon doesn’t make much of a difference, but trillions and trillions of photons all hitting a surface add up, especially in the vacuum of space. Radiation in the form of sunlight is therefore enough to push interplanetary spacecraft thousands of miles off course, however, so this effect must be accounted for when sending probes to Mars or other planets. But a higher-energy version of this phenomenon could use a ground- or space-based laser beam to push a lightsail on a spacecraft in a more directed way. With the beam providing a source of constant pressure on the sail, the cumulative effect of this radiation pressure adds up to speeds significantly faster and more reliable than you could get from complicated rockets using chemical propulsion. “The lightsail will travel faster than any previous spacecraft, with potential to eventually open interstellar distances to direct spacecraft exploration,” Caltech’s Harry Atwater, the Otis Booth Leadership Chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science, said in a Caltech statement. Measuring the force of light on a sail Atwater’s team developed a test platform to measure how lasers exert force on a microscopic “trampoline” of silicon nitride, just 50 nanometers thick. The miniature sail, a square sheet 40 microns on each side, is tethered at the corners by silicon nitride springs and vibrates when struck by a laser. By detecting those tiny movements, researchers can calculate the force of the laser beam and its power. “There are numerous challenges involved in developing a membrane that could ultimately be used as lightsail. It needs to withstand heat, hold its shape under pressure, and ride stably along the axis of a laser beam,” Atwater said. “But before we can begin building such a sail, we need to understand how the materials respond to radiation pressure from lasers. We wanted to know if we could determine the force being exerted on a membrane just by measuring its movements. It turns out we can.” The study’s lead authors, postdoctoral scholar Lior Michaeli and graduate student Ramon Gao, built a specialized setup called a common-path interferometer. This enables precise measurement of the membrane’s motion by canceling out background noise such as small vibrations in the lab from equipment or even people talking. “We not only avoided the unwanted heating effects but also used what we learned about the device’s behavior to create a new way to measure light’s force,” Michaeli said. Gao added that the platform can measure side-to-side motion and rotations, paving the way for future lightsail designs that can self-correct if they stray from the laser beam.
