Costco’s Latest Store Change Has Members So Excited Costco’s Latest Store Change Has Members So Excited Credit: Philip Arno Photography/Shutterstock Credit: Philip Arno Photography/Shutterstock This article may contain affiliate links that Yahoo and/or the publisher may receive a commission from if you buy a product or service through those links. Costco continues to garner a devoted following, with fans obsessing over the warehouse store’s new snacks, bakery items, frozen foods, and even homeware gems. The retailer is now winning over shoppers once again with a new store policy that could greatly affect the future of many of its employees. Costco plans to roll out a pay increase for its nonunionized workers over the next three years, according to an internal memo sent to employees. This move has resonated with shoppers — many of whom are now choosing to support the warehouse retailer in response to its commitment to investing in its workforce. Here’s what you need to know about Costco’s new wage increase: Starting in March 2024, store clerks and assistants at the top of the pay scale will see their hourly pay go up by $1 to $30.20 an hour, with another $1 increase each year thereafter. For entry-level employees, wages will rise by 50 cents to $20 an hour. “With these changes, we believe our hourly wages and benefits will continue to far outpace others in the retail industry,” the company said in the memo. This policy rollout comes as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, representing nearly 18,000 Costco employees, pushes for better pay and benefits. Their efforts are part of ongoing negotiations before their contract expires on Friday, February 7. “Costco is still shorting their workers because nonunion workers lack the retirement security of a defined benefit pension plan and the job protections that come with a union contract,” Matthew McQuaid, a Costco Teamsters spokesperson, said in an email sent to NPR. A few days ago, Costco also announced it would continue its commitment to DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) policies, even as many companies are falling short of their initial promises to prioritize company culture. As a result, many shoppers are not only attracted to Costco for its wide range of products, but are also choosing to support the company for its commitment to investing in and supporting its employees. When news of Costco’s wage increase for employees spread on social media, people quickly took to the comments to show their support. Complex, a pop culture news platform, posted about the store policy change, and one user commented, “I’m going to get my Costco membership.” Another added, “Support Costco at all costs. We need all other stores, companies, and businesses to match this, or better. I’m talking about all the ones making hundreds of millions, billions. I’m going to Costco more often, starting now.” The One Cookware Brand That Gordon Ramsay Can’t Stop Talking About Do Water Filters Really Work — And Which Ones Are the Best? Just Like Fortnite, NetEase Focusing on Their Battle Pass Monetization is a Massive Win for Marvel Rivals Just Like Fortnite, NetEase Focusing on Their Battle Pass Monetization is a Massive Win for Marvel Rivals Without a doubt, Epic Games’ Fortnite popularised the idea of the Battle Pass. Today, almost every free-to-play live service game features a battle pass or a slight variation of it. Over the years, there has been some criticism about the pricing of battle passes, or the items in them, but in a free-to-play game, it’s fair for developers to set the prices on the higher side since that’s what keeps the game in business. Marvel Rivals also features a battle pass that allows players to unlock unique skins for a decent price (Image via NetEase Games) NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals is a great example as currently, it is one of the most popular games that feature a battle pass. The pricing of a few skins can be outrageous, but the price of the battle pass is decent as it gives players enough cosmetics, all while keeping the game in business. Marvel Rivals‘ Battle Pass provides players with good cosmetics for a decent price As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals also features a battle pass that allows players to get their hands on some exclusive cosmetics, such as skins, banners, emotes, etc. NetEase Games has adopted a neat business model that offers players the battle pass at a comparatively low price, but at the same time, they offer some exclusive skins that are quite expensive. Since skins don’t affect the game at all, it is up to the players to choose if they want to drop money on skins. Almost all major free-to-play games that feature a battle pass don’t force players to purchase it. A battle pass can be described as a structured way that allows players to earn rewards by actively playing the game, which generates revenue and also encourages engagement. NetEase Games is trying to put an end to mods The modding community has created some wild mods for Marvel Rivals (Image via NetEase Games) Not everyone is interested in paying for skins, so some players use mods to use fancy skins. Despite being a risky move, many Marvel Rivals players have been using mods to try out fanmade skins but NetEase isn’t too pleased as it cuts their revenue. As a part of the season 1 update, the studio decided to ban mods, but that idea backfired as there was a sharp increase in the number of mods that were created after the update was rolled out. Epic Games’ Fortnite is a well-known game that features not just one but multiple battle passes, allowing players to choose the skins they would like to unlock. Apart from this, the game offers separate bundles for collaborations. On top of this, battle passes also offer free rewards, which also include in-game currency that players can use to unlock premium items. To sum things up, free-to-play games like Fortnite and Marvel Rivals offer a great battle pass for players who wish to use unique skins without spending a lot of money. What to stream this week What to stream this week Getty Images Bring on the granny pants and awkward moments, because beloved singleton Bridget Jones is back on our screens on Thursday. But that’s not all the week has in store. It’s the finale of Beast Games, there’s a new album by Rizzle Kicks, Civilization VII is being released, and the 90s/00s theme continues with Clueless the Musical. Read on for this week’s biggest releases… Buckle up for the Beast Games finaleGetty Images When Beast Games launched, the Amazon series promised to be the biggest live game show in the world. The reality competition show sees 1,000 people compete in a series of elimination challenges for a $5m (£4.02m) cash prize. The man behind it is, of course, MrBeast himself – the most popular YouTuber in the world, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson. The finale is this Thursday. But the series has not been without controversy. It’s drawn comparisons with Squid Game, for the elaborate tasks that contestants are set. In September, Amazon and MrBeast were named in a US lawsuit which made a number of claims about how participants were treated on set. Amazon and MrBeast did not respond to a request for comment on this. MrBeast previously claimed that the allegations were “blown out of proportion”. Everyone’s favourite singleton returns The section below contains spoilers about Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Getty Images After almost a decade away, hapless heroine Bridget Jones is back. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy hits cinemas this Thursday, right in time for Valentine’s Day (I have booked tickets… tragically). Following the death of Mr Darcy, Bridget (played by Renée Zellweger) is now a widow, trying to bring up two kids. She is also re-entering the world of dating, by having a fling with a much younger man – played by Leo Woodall, of One Day fame. My colleague Colin Paterson asked Renée how she began preparing to play Bridget again. “I start trying to speak like [Bridget] before I start rehearsing,” the American actress said. “So I sound a bit like I have pretences, putting on airs for a while. It’s abysmal for a while,” she laughed. “I find that hard to believe,” Leo jumped in. But Renée insisted, “it’s true.” Tune in to BBC Breakfast on Monday for Colin’s full interview, ahead of the film’s release. Rizzle Kicks are backGetty Images If seeing Bridget Jones isn’t your ideal way of celebrating Valentine’s Day, then why not spend it listening to Rizzle Kicks’ new album, Competition Is For Losers. It’s out on Friday, and is set to see the pop/hip-hop duo – made up of Jordan Stephens and Harley Alexander-Sulé – sharing life lessons on love, sobriety and masculinity. It’s being seen as a comeback, after the pair decided to bow out of the music scene for almost a decade for mental health reasons. And Jordan and Harley told me it’s their “best album yet”. “It’s definitely harder to promote than it used to be but we’re confident of its energy if you do listen,” they said. “Everyone probably says that. Joy feels rebellious these days. So we stepped back into our own lane.” The album features collaborations with artists including Maverick Sabre, DJ Premier, Mick Jenkins and newcomer Lex Amor. Clueless the MusicalGetty Images Cher Horowitz was the lovably spoilt, fashion-obsessed Beverly Hills high school girl we took to our hearts in the 1995 teen film Clueless. The film, based on Jane Austen’s Emma, was a box office hit and spawned a TV spin-off. Now, Clueless is coming back – as a new West End musical. It stars Emma Flynn as Cher and Keelan McAuley as Josh, and features songs by Suddenly I See singer KT Tunstall. I’m here for the fashion, but there’s so much more to Clueless. Cher’s wisdom includes self-acceptance, and recognising the importance of female friends. And let’s not forget her iconic put-down to unwanted male attention that I’ll admit to rolling out endlessly in my teens: “Ugh, as if!” The show opens at London’s Trafalgar Theatre on Friday. The wait is over for Civilization VII2K By Tom Gerken, Technology reporter It’s been a long time since Civilization VI hit the shelves in 2016. Now, the latest in the cult strategy series – which first appeared in 1991 – is finally being released. Civilization VII brings with it all sorts of new features to keep gamers happy. I was lucky enough to be one of the people to get my hands on it ahead of time, and I can say with confidence it’s a game-changer. As I wrote in my preview in August last year, a bundle of brand new features are embedded in the game, centred around a new hook – you now play through three eras, changing world nations as you go, and building on top of what came before. The list of new features is so broad it would be impossible to list them here, but when I told the developers that it seemed like they’d just gone through Reddit and taken every suggestion, they joked that wasn’t far off what really happened. The hotly-anticipated new game comes out Tuesday on PC. Apple’s plans for AR glasses may not have been scrapped entirely Apple’s plans for AR glasses may not have been scrapped entirely Apple may have set aside its rumored plans for Mac-tethered augmented reality glasses, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s done with AR glasses altogether. According to ’s Mark Gurman — who last month that Apple was working on, but ultimately shelved, — sources have told him that “Apple’s long-term goal of standalone AR glasses remains intact.” Rather than creating a “stopgap product” in the meantime that would need to be connected to a Mac, though, Gurman reports that the team is taking a slower, more cautious approach. It’ll instead “keep working on underlying technology — like screens and silicon” to make a standalone device work, he writes. As described in earlier reports, the AR glasses Apple is rumored to be developing wouldn’t be another headset-style device like the Vision Pro, but would likely take a form more like the Xreal One, which look like regular glasses. ‘I was a green energy zealot – until I had a nightmare heat pump installed’ ‘I was a green energy zealot – until I had a nightmare heat pump installed’ All Paul Robinson really wanted were some solar panels on his roof. The company director, who had recently moved to a quiet market town in Mid Wales, is a firm believer in green technology. In the 12 years before he moved, he had benefitted from solar panels and a home battery, both of which shaved money off his power bill. The Government offers homeowners grants towards solar panels through its Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme. But to take advantage of the generous initiative, Robinson was also required to install an air source heat pump, an endeavour that proved to be more trouble than it was worth. “I’m so glad I didn’t pay for any of it,” he says. “The amount it cost is crackers.” Robinson’s entire heat pump installation process is estimated to have cost at least £40,000 – Jay Williams Robinson estimates that around 18 tradesmen – a team of electricians, plumbers, plasterers, and supervisors – descended on the stone barn conversion in Welshpool, with the entire installation costing at least £40,000, according to estimates seen by The Telegraph. The ECO4 grant, which is aimed at helping people who struggle to afford to heat their homes, covered the entire cost of the work. Applicants can receive thousands of pounds towards upgrading their property’s energy efficiency, provided their home has an energy performance certificate rating of D or worse. In Robinson’s case, contractors estimated the renovation would lift his EPC score from an F to a B. “It was utter madness, it really was,” says Mr Robinson. “They had to put internal insulation on the walls, rip out hundreds of metres of copper from the plumbing system, and replace every pipe.” All the carpets and floorboards came up, and a cupboard was devoted to housing a water tank. The property’s oil boiler was replaced with a behemoth twin 12kW Vaillant heat pump, which would draw power from the solar panels and battery that Robinson had ultimately done all of this for in the first place – at least in theory. In practice, Robinson says the conversion has been “a nightmare”. A bank behind the property obscures the sun, meaning his new solar panels barely work. “The sun hits the panels for about 15 minutes a day for five months of the year,” he says. “In my last property, I managed 2,500 watts. Now it’s only around 200.” The meagre amount of power provided by the solar panels comes nowhere near fully charging his home battery and means the heat pump relies almost entirely on the grid, which is expensive due to the price of electricity. Robinson says he is awaiting another contractor to move the panels to somewhere where they will attract sunlight. And on top of all that, he adds, the heat pump failed to keep the house warm. “Having run it now for two weeks, we’ve got a heating engineer coming to look at putting an oil boiler back in,” he says. “Even with the recommended measures taken, the cost is still very high compared to oil.” ‘I’m going to sell my heat pump’ Roughly 1.5 million households in Britain still rely on heating oil, which successive ministers have been eager to phase out. Until fairly recently, the previous government had hoped to ban new oil boilers from as early as next year. But the deadline was pushed back to 2035 by former prime minister Rishi Sunak before Labour dropped the policy in January. While new-builds will still be forced to have heat pumps, households will be allowed to install gas or oil boilers from 2035. Getting heat pumps to work in old buildings can be a struggle – though it can be done. Last year, The Telegraph reported that ground-source heat pumps in eco-friendly homes built by the Crown Estate had left homeowners with big bills to fix or rip out the technology. One homeowner was left without heating or hot water for a month. Another, like Robinson, ripped theirs out to install an oil boiler. The problem is compounded by a lack of tradesmen qualified to work with the technology. Last year, the standards body, MCS, said the number of certified contractors qualified to work with renewable energy sources had risen by 23pc to 5,000 since the year before. However, only 58pc of these are qualified to work with heat pumps. The shortage of workers means a malfunctioning heat pump can spiral into an expensive nightmare, and it may work out cheaper to revert to gas or oil. When self-employed trader, Mark Lawrence, decided to renovate his bungalow in Nottingham, he hedged his bets by retaining a combi boiler alongside a new heat pump. Lawrence, 55, believed the technology would pair well with his home’s underfloor heating, but found that during winter, the heat pump took four hours to get his room to temperature even on a mildly cold day. “When the temperature dropped to freezing or worse, it took a lot longer,” he says. Fed up with how long the heat pump was taking to heat the property, Lawrence disconnected the electricity-powered system and substituted in the gas boiler. “Wow, what a difference,” he says. “Within two hours, the temperature is the required level, and it doesn’t matter about the outside temperature.” The heat pump also proved expensive. Using his smart meter, Lawrence worked out that his heat pump cost him £1.80 for the four hours it took to heat his home on a mild day, and £2.40 in lower temperatures. Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air outside a home, so in cold weather, their efficiency falls – a problem that does not affect gas or oil boilers. Analysis by the Energy Utilities Alliance found that heat pumps cost around £4 more per day to run in sub-zero temperatures than gas boilers. However, the Heat Pump Federation trade body argues that the systems are more efficient than gas boilers in the “shoulder months of the year”, in spring and autumn, and are cheaper to run over the course of a year than gas- and oil-fired boilers. “I’m probably going to sell my heat pump as I’m better off just relying on the gas boiler,” says Lawrence. “There’s just no point in any house that’s the age of my bungalow trying to install one when you have to also retrofit new insulation and radiators. They’re just ineffective in older houses.” ‘My heat pump works so badly, my wood stove is on 24/7’ Horror stories from homeowners who have tried and failed to make heat pumps work for them pose a problem for Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, who wants 600,000 heat pumps installed every year from 2028. Take-up is already well below target, despite the Government offering £7,500 towards installations. Homeowners whose heat pumps have failed to work have little choice but to revert to fossil fuels. In one Telegraph reader’s case, her heat pump’s poor performance forced her to “burn half a rainforest” heating her home with a wood stove. “I’m beyond caring – I’ve gone back to coal fire and have a portable gas heater,” she says. The reader, who asked to remain anonymous, was surprised to find her heat pump performed so badly given she lives in a new-build. “My son got back from Australia and we put the heating on in his room – it cost us £10 a day. I’d rather pay for his return flight,” she says. “We put the heating on the other day and I’m just watching the smart meter go to red.” She does not use the second floor of their four-bedroom house, on account of her husband’s disability. “My husband is a pensioner,” she says. “But he’s recently lost the winter fuel allowance. Our home needs to be heated very quickly because of his low mobility.” The company responsible for the heat pump claimed there was nothing wrong with the system, and a plumber dispatched to the property lacked the qualifications to attempt a fix. “In the meantime, we’ve gone back to the 1950s, with our wood-burning stove on 24/7 and breathing in ash,” the reader says. A government spokesman said: “While we are unable to comment on individual cases, any energy efficiency measures fitted under government schemes must be fitted by a TrustMark registered installer and to the highest standards. Any measures installed must be safe and effective, with issues promptly and properly rectified by the installer. “Heat pumps are three times more efficient than gas boilers and we are making them more affordable to more households by providing £7,500 towards the cost, enabling families to save around £100 a year compared to a gas boiler by using a smart tariff effectively.” Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Musk calls for impeachment of judge who blocked DOGE access at Treasury Musk calls for impeachment of judge who blocked DOGE access at Treasury Elon Musk is calling for the impeachment of the federal judge who made a decision early Saturday morning that the Treasury Department should block access to anyone “other than civil servants with a need for access to perform their job duties” from its payment systems. The order explicitly prohibits special government employees and those detailed from outside the department from getting access to the systems, a designation that would cover Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). That appeared to anger Musk, who expressed his irritation in a few Saturday posts on the social platform X, which he owns. “A corrupt judge protecting corruption,” Musk wrote in one post at 2:11 a.m. “He needs to be impeached NOW.” That post was written in reply to a post by the conservative media pundit Glenn Beck. Musk, the leader of DOGE, in an earlier post at 1:40 a.m. wrote “it’s time” in response to another post about impeaching judges who have ruled against actions by the Trump administration. U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer, an appointee of former President Obama, in his ruling ordered anyone who is now blocked from access to the Treasury Department payment system, which doles out trillions of dollars, to immediately destroy any material they’ve already downloaded. Engelmayer’s ruling came in response to a suit by by 19 Democratic state attorneys general worried over the access Musk and his team was getting to the information. Musk’s efforts have sparked concerns from Democrats and career public servants at the Treasury Department and other agencies that sensitive private information of citizens could be endangered. It has also raised questions about the end game behind Musk’s actions, including whether the access to the payment systems could be used to cut off appropriated funds by Congress that President Trump’s team feels are not in line with the new administration’s policies or objectives. The ruling from Engelmayer lasts until at least Friday, when another judge who is permanently overseeing the case will hold a hearing in New York about whether to grant a longer pause. “The Court’s firm assessment is that, for the reasons stated by the States, they will face irreparable harm in the absence of injunctive relief,” Engelmayer wrote in his decision. “That is both because of the risk that the new policy presents of the disclosure of sensitive and confidential information and the heightened risk that the systems in question will be more vulnerable than before to hacking,” the judge continued. The state attorneys general had only filed their case on Friday before Engelmayer’s decision came down early Saturday. Musk’s efforts to win access to the systems of various federal agencies have provoked a number of legal actions in a whirlwind few weeks since President Trump’s inauguration. Musk is the richest man in the world and has become a key part of Trump’s inner circle. The president offered a vote of confidence in Musk’s actions on Friday during a press conference with Japan’s prime minister. In response to a legal challenge brought by a coalition of unions, the Trump administration earlier this week agreed to limit access to two personnel at the Treasury Department until the next stage of the case, but the ruling issued Saturday went further in restricting access. The courts have emerged as a key power challenging Trump as he seeks to make a number of enormous changes to policies in Washington, from birthright citizenship to the holding of migrants at Guantánamo Bay to the closing of federal agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development. Musk’s threat to impeach a judge could open a new front in what is emerging as a battle between the executive and judicial branches of the federal government. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Leipzig end win drought by beating Irvine’s St Pauli Leipzig end win drought by beating Irvine’s St Pauli Ten-man RB Leipzig have ended a four-game winless streak in the Bundesliga as they held on to a 2-0 win against the Jackson Irvine-captained St Pauli. The hosts scored both goals in the first half on Sunday, but had captain Willi Orban sent off in the 69th minute and had to hold on for victory. Leipzig took the lead in the 16th minute, recovering the ball after St Pauli, led by Socceroo Irvine, had hit the post. Xavi Simons broke down the left into the opponents’ half and found Benjamin Sesko, who dribbled past a sliding defender and fired the ball into the net. Sesko returned the favour and served Simon to double their lead in the 35th. Leipzig’s big day was soured by Orban seeing a red card in the second half after he fouled Elias Saad on the edge of the box to stop a clear goal opportunity. St Pauli forced goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi into two fine saves late in the game, but despite the pressure, failed to find the net. The result put Leipzig back in fourth place after they had temporarily lost the last Champions League spot to VfB Stuttgart. In the day’s bottom-of-the-table clash, promoted Holstein Kiel and Bochum shared the points in a 2-2 draw. Neither team will be happy with the result, with Bochum at the foot of the table andf Kiel one position and two points ahead in 17th. Hosts Kiel broke the deadlock in the third minute after John Tolkin’s attempted cross was blocked by Felix Passlack in the box with his hand. Steven Skrzybski converted the penalty. Bochum turned things around through Myron Boadu, who scored a brace within two minutes in the 37th and 39th, only for Kiel to hit back in the 50th as David Zec headed in the equaliser. In the games on Friday and Saturday, leaders Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen 3-0, champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a goalless draw at VfL Wolfsburg and coach Niko Kovac made his Borussia Dortmund debut with a 2-1 home defeat to Stuttgart. Nottinghamshire motor neurone disease campaigner Sam Perkins dies Nottinghamshire motor neurone disease campaigner Sam Perkins dies A campaigner and fundraiser for research into motor neurone disease (MND) has died, his family have said. Sam Perkins, from East Leake, Nottinghamshire, was 37 when he was diagnosed with the condition in March 2019. The former triathlete helped raise more than £250,000 through his charity Stand Against MND. In September he was presented with an award at a ceremony organised by an online fundraising organisation. MND is an incurable condition where nerve cells which control muscles gradually stop working. In 2023 Mr Perkins set up the Fifty50 campaign looking to recruit 50 fundraisers to raise at least £500. The name was chosen to represent the 50% chance of dying in the first two years after diagnosis. The campaign attracted support from the likes of Nottingham Forest captain Joe Worrall and has so far raised more than £50,000, twice its original target. His family confirmed his death on Sunday but have not commented further. Iconic Finnish chair designer Yrjö Kukkapuro dies Iconic Finnish chair designer Yrjö Kukkapuro dies Yrjö Kukkapuro, a renowned Finnish designer whose postmodern style of chairs graced waiting rooms, offices and living rooms across Finland as well as collections in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, has died. He was 91. His death on Saturday at his home outside Helsinki was confirmed by his daughter, Isa Kukkapuro-Enbom, in an email to The Associated Press on Sunday. The cause of death was not disclosed. “Almost every Finn has sat on a chair he designed — at a metro station, in a bank, at school, or in a library,” Studio Kukkapuro said. “Yrjö Kukkapuro never stopped designing and coming up with new ideas. Until the very end, he pondered a concept of his new chair, the plan of which was clear in his mind. His assistant didn’t have time to make drawings of the chair.” In a career spanning more than 70 years, Kukkapuro’s chairs were lauded for their comfort, functionalism and ergonomics as well as their design, and featured names like Ateljee, Karuselli-chair, Long Chair and, his most famous, the Experiment. Designed in 1982, the Experiment chair was considered avant-garde but ultimately became commercially successful and was seen as a key turning point for the postmodern furniture style. The Experiment includes decorative, wavy armrests in bright colours, an upholstered back and bottom, and its signature angled seat despite the frame being flat on the ground. Although initial production ceased in the 1990s, European furniture design brand Hem sought permission from Kukkapuro in 2021 to reproduce it with minor adjustments to the scale and construction. “We are saddened by the news of Yrjö’s passing, and our thoughts are with his family,” Hem founder and chief executive Petrus Palmér said. “He was a furniture design trailblazer, and showed us that a non-conformist approach is the only way to achieve a lasting legacy.” The Experiment chair retailed for up to 2,399 euros ($A3,954) on Hem’s website Sunday, where a description called it “timeless, bold, and as compelling today as the day it was created”. “In the Experiment Chair, Kukkapuro sought to add art to functionalism, to satisfy romantic tastes alongside meeting essential needs,” the description reads. “The result is startling, authentic, a hero of twentieth-century design.” Kukkapuro designed his family’s studio and home to feature a wave-shaped roof and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Built in the late 1960s for him and his wife, artist Irmeli Kukkapuro, who died in 2022, it’s scheduled to become a museum next year. Hidden AI stocks set to rally amid DeepSeek’s breakthrough, analysts predict Hidden AI stocks set to rally amid DeepSeek’s breakthrough, analysts predict Concerns over lackluster guidance and plans for record capital investment weighed on the Magnificent Seven trade this past week. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS) fell 2.4% over the last five trading days, led by Alphabet’s (GOOG, GOOGL) 9.2% drop and Amazon’s (AMZN) 3.6% decline. And it’s just the latest headwind for the group. The tech sector is still recovering from the DeepSeek-driven sell-off last month, after investors panicked over fears of a cheaper open-source large language model. Opening Bid Podcast: how to trade the DeepSeek bombshell But the development of DeepSeek should be viewed as a catalyst for the industry, not a headwind, according to top CEOs and industry experts. One former OpenAI employee told me the market should see DeepSeek developments as a “win,” given their potential to accelerate AI innovation and adoption. “DeepSeek’s R1 model is a breakthrough … Being excited about progress in science is something that we should all want, and seeing the cost of a critical resource come down is also something we should want,” explained Zack Kass, OpenAI’s former head of Go-To-Market. And that sentiment has been echoed by Big Tech CEOs. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai described the company’s work as “tremendous” on his firm’s earnings call earlier this week, while Meta (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg said there were a “number of novel things” that DeepSeek did that the company is “still digesting.” For investors looking to cash in on AI’s next growth phase, it may be time to look beyond hyperscalers and chipmakers like Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD). The play: AI network stocks — the group that provides the infrastructure for AI applications. And here’s why: As AI models like DeepSeek’s R1 significantly increase compute demand, the need for high-speed networking solutions will only grow. Bank of America’s Chun Him Cheung wrote in a note to clients this week that a cheaper cost for compute should lead to “wider AI-adoption” and demand should be “robust.” T. Rowe Price Science and Technology equity strategy portfolio manager Tony Wang told me he sees the group as “well positioned,” while Stifel’s Ruben Roy also sees upside, citing DeepSeek’s R1 model as a driver of global demand for robust and high-speed networking infrastructure. “The networking aspect of it is definitely where there’s a bottleneck in terms of delivering AI infrastructure,” Wang told me. “We’re going to need to see a lot more innovation at that layer. “ Roy sees Ciena (CIEN), Coherent (COHR), and Celestica (CLS) as top beneficiaries as “AI workloads get more efficient to run.” Story Continues “The underlying plumbing for moving data is going to get more challenging to put into place… The interface speeds are moving higher, and the challenges of moving data around can continue to get more complex,” Roy explained. He says Ciena is starting to see increased demand from hyperscalers as “AI-related data bleeds out of the data centers and out into enterprises and consumers consuming AI.” And Celestica, which builds switches and servers for hyperscalers, stands to gain as the industry moves into “custom compute — the custom chips that hyperscalers are designing and developing.” Morgan Stanley research analyst Meta Marshall is bullish on AI networking company Arista Networks (ANET). In a recent note ahead of earnings, Marshall wrote that shares are now more attractive following the recent DeepSeek-driven sell-off. She has an Overweight rating on the stock ahead of its earnings report scheduled for Feb. 18. Seana Smith is an anchor at Yahoo Finance. Follow Smith on X @SeanaNSmith. No deal between Labour and Lib Dems, says Jane Dodds No deal between Labour and Lib Dems, says Jane Dodds There is no deal “at this stage” on the Welsh government budget, according to Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds. Labour needs to reach an agreement with another party as the party only has half of the seats in the Senedd. Her denials on BBC Politics Wales come after leaked reports a settlement was “close”. If the budget legislation fails to pass part of the £26bn spending package must return to the *** Treasury, and the Welsh government would struggle to function. Dodds said there was currently “no deal” and compared the negotiating to buying a house. “You look around first and then you check things out and nothing is certain until you sign on the dotted line,” she said. On Thursday sources from both sides of negotiations said a deal between Labour and Dodds was “close” and the Lib Dems had secured extra funding for childcare, social care and local government. The deal was also said, according to sources, to go further and include concessions on the Heart of Wales railway line between Swansea and Shrewsbury, bus fares for under 21s, and burying power cables underground. The Welsh Conservatives said they would not be able to support the budget, and Plaid Cymru has said without fair funding for Wales there was not a deal to be done with it. Hefin David, Labour MS for Caerphilly, repeated the government’s calls for opposition parties to vote for the budget. He said: “Supporting the budget will give extra money to the NHS, extra money to education and extra money to transport.” The Welsh budget for 2025-26 will allocate £26bn of funding to public services. Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford had an extra £1.5bn as a result of the *** government’s budget last October. The final budget is due to be published on 25 February before a final debate and Senedd vote on 4 March. Trending: Deloitte’s fastest-growing software company partners with Amazon, Walmart & Target – Last Chance to get 4,000 of its pre-IPO shares for just $0.26/share! If you want to make $100 per month — $1,200 annually — from Arbor Realty Trust dividends, your investment value needs to be approximately $9,449, which is around 700 shares at $13.50 each. Understanding the dividend yield calculations: When making an estimate, you need two key variables — the desired annual income ($1,200) and the dividend yield (12.70% in this case). So, $1,200 / 0.127 = $9,449 to generate an income of $100 per month. You can calculate the dividend yield by dividing the annual dividend payments by the current price of the stock. The dividend yield can change over time. This is the outcome of fluctuating stock prices and dividend payments on a rolling basis. A drop in stock price to $40 will have an inverse effect and increase the dividend yield to 5% ($2/$40).
