Fact-checking Trump’s claims that tariffs are a “tax on a foreign country”

President Trump said Sunday that he will announce 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States on Monday.
Mr. Trump, speaking on Air Force One on the way to New Orleans to attend the 2025 Super Bowl, said he would also announce “reciprocal tariffs” on Tuesday or Wednesday, which he said will go into effect immediately. This means that the U.S. would impose import duties on products in cases where another country has levied duties on U.S. goods.
“If they charge us, we charge them… every country,” he said, adding: “If they are charging us 130% and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way.”

During his first term in the White House, Mr. Trump imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum before granting several trading partners duty-free quotas.
Earlier this month, the president authorized a wave of tariffs on America’s three closest trading partners – Mexico, Canada and China. Last week he agreed to a 30-day pause on threats to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, with another 10% tariff on ********* oil, natural gas and electricity.
Mr. Trump, an avowed fan of tariffs, says they are necessary to ensure greater cooperation from the countries to stop ******** immigration and prevent fentanyl smuggling, but he has also pledged to use tariffs to boost domestic manufacturing and raise revenues for the federal government.

Russia awaits appropriate signals from US on contacts, senior diplomat says
Russia awaits appropriate signals from US on contacts, senior diplomat says
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian envoy to the United Nations, in remarks published on Sunday, said Russia was waiting for “appropriate signals” from Washington on contacts with Moscow, but he had few expectations for better ties with Washington’s delegation at the U.N.
Vasily Nebenzya’s comments, in an interview with Russia’s state-run news agency RIA, were issued before U.S. President Donald Trump said he believed the U.S. was making progress in talks with Russia over the war in Ukraine.
Trump provided no details on a recent discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin but added he expects more conversations.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Nebenzya told RIA Russia was ready for talks with the United States on Ukraine “on an equal basis”.
“We are open to contacts but on an equal basis and, as a requirement, taking account of Russian interests,” Nebenzya, who serves as Russia’s permanent representative to the U.N., told RIA.
“We are waiting for the appropriate signals from the American side.”
Trump, who has promised to end the war but not yet set out in public how he would do so, said last week that the United States was talking to both the Russians and Ukrainians about resolving the conflict, but he gave no additional details.
In an interview from Air Force One on Friday, Trump told the New York Post that he had “better not say” how many times he and the Russian president had spoken. He also did not disclose when the latest conversation had taken place.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.
In his comments, Nebenzya said relations with U.S. delegations at the U.N. had been “pretty good”. But he singled out the U.S. team that chaired the U.N. Security Council at the close of President Joe Biden’s mandate as “one of the worst” for violating U.N. procedures.
Nebenzya said Russia was ready to work with U.S. diplomats at the U.N. although Washington’s representatives had resorted to “extremely politicised diplomacy.”
RIA quoted Nebenzya as saying he had “no high expectations” things would change under Trump. He said statements by the administration and its representatives were often “aimed at domestic audiences or party interests.”

Landale grabs rare chance in Rockets’ NBA win
Landale grabs rare chance in Rockets’ NBA win
*********** Jock Landale has benefited from a rare opportunity, posting a double-double for the short-handed Houston Rockets as they snapped a six-game skid with a 94-87 NBA win over the Toronto Raptors.
Landale had 11 points and a season-best 10 rebounds in his 24 minutes on court after starting centre Alperen Sengun departed in the first quarter of Sunday’s home game with back spasms.
The 29-year-old has averaged just under 10 minutes for 3.5 points in his appearances this season but has stiff internal competition with Sengun and Kiwi big man Steven Adams also at the Rockets (33-20), who sit fifth in the western conference.
Adams was rested after playing the previous night.
Also filling in for Sengun, Jeff Green had a season-high 14 points.
The Rockets were also without Fred VanVleet (ankle) for a fifth straight game, but Dillon Brooks led the way with 19 points and Jalen Green added 18.
The lowly Raptors (16-37) made just eight of 42 3-pointer attempts.

Ancient Greek Religious Festival of Anthesteria Revived in Athens
Ancient Greek Religious Festival of Anthesteria Revived in Athens

The ancient Greek religious festival of Anthesteria was revived in Athens over the weekend of February 8 and 9.
Participants dressed in ancient Greek costume met on Sunday at the stairs of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, under the Acropolis, to reenact the spirit of the celebrations in honour of the god of wine Dionysus.
The procession continued to the archaeological site of Kerameikos, where participants honoured their dead ancestors.
Festivities had started the day before the procession, at the premises of Ancient Greek Religion, with the opening of the jar with the new wine and its sharing to participants, like the custom used to be in ancient Greece, some two and a half millennia ago.
Three-day festival in honour of Dionysus
In antiquity, the Anthesteria festival used to take place in late February – early March, on the 11th, 12th and 13th days of the month Anthesterion. It lasted three days and was one four Athens festivals in honour of Dionysus.
According to ancient Greek historian Thucydides, this was the oldest festival for the god of wine.
Anthesteria was also celebrated in the city-states of Ionia at the time as well as on the Aegean islands and coast of Anatolia.
Each day was fondly named for the kind of vessel that typified the day’s activity: Pithoigia for jar-opening, Choes for *****, and Chytroi for pots.
After opening the jars to taste the new wine for the first time on the first day, and conducting religious rituals on the second day, participants on the last day of the festival honoured not only their own dead, but also those who perished in the Great Flood of Deucalion, Greek mythology’s equivalent of Noah’s story.
Duality of Anthesteria ancient Greek festival
While most people would believe that Anthesteria took their name from the word anthos, meaning flower, and connect the festival to a celebration of spring, British classical scholars and linguists have suggested a different etymology and interpretation of the ancient festival.
Arthur Woollgar Verrall glossed the name as a Feast of Revocation from the ancient Greek verb anathessasthai, meaning to “pray up”, in reference to the aspects of the festival where the dead were considered to return from the underworld and walk among the living.
Similarly, Jane Ellen Harrison also regarded the Anthesteria as primarily concerned with placating ancestral spirits.
This approach is also justified by the nature of the rituals conducted during the Anthesteria, including libations to the dead and offerings to the god Hermes as an underworld figure.
Nonetheless, the connection to flowers, blooming, and the arrival of spring is not entirely decoupled from the Anthesteria, even if not linguistically supported. Spring flowers were used to decorate the rooms of the house, the drinking vessels, and any children over three years of age, while festive mood prevailed.
A broader description of the festival could be that of a celebration of spring and new life in the presence of the spirits of the dead.

Great Boulder hold off gallant Norths for seventh win
Great Boulder hold off gallant Norths for seventh win
Great Boulder skipped two games clear in the battle for the Eastern Goldfields Cricket Association’s A-grade minor premiership when Bevan Bennell’s sublime batting and Prash Nagaraja’s six wickets led an eight-run victory over North Kalgoorlie on Saturday.
Bennell fell agonisingly short of a third century this season and 29th overall — dismissed for 99 off the first ball of the final over, but it was still the linchpin of the Two Blues’ 6-207.

The right-hander’s aggressive knock from No.4 comprised 80 deliveries, punctuated by six fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 123.75.
After Great Boulder started the innings at 2-36, Bennell and player-coach Warren August (37 off 47 ******) later put on 93 runs for the fifth wicket.
Norths’ attack was anchored by Trent Mais, Noah Moore and Michael Noble — each with two wickets.
Harris Carnegie and Nick Willis then put Norths on a solid path in reply with an opening stand worth 77 runs.

Willis faced just 32 ****** in racing to 51, with five boundaries and three sixes, and Carnegie contributed 46 off 63 ******.
But Norths inexplicably lost 3-6 and later 4-2, as Daniel Colling formed a brilliant tandem with Nagaraja.
In the 15th over, Mais and Sam Burge each fell to Nagaraja in the space of three ****** and Carnegie followed six overs later.
Colling got in on the act with a dynamic 22nd over when he was on a hat-trick by removing Kodee Lowe and Fletcher Edwards.
Jordan Delbridge played out a dot ball as the new batter to foil Colling’s hat-trick, but he became another Nagaraja victim off the fourth ball of the next over.
Jake George (17 off 60 ******) and No.10 Cooper Bennett (34 off 45) dug in bravely, but Norths fell just short in the run chase — dismissed for 199 in 38.1 overs.
Nagaraja finished with career-best 6-36 and Colling grabbed 2-22 that sealed Great Boulder’s seventh win.
The Two Blues will carry a five-game winning sequence in this Saturday’s round 12 clash against Hannans.

Ferrie’s modesty matched the modest reputation of Drozd, who arrived after his release by Milwall in October.

Now, he is immortal in Scottish football history after selling a ****** to Jefte, opening his body up, and slotting into the bottom corner like prime Thierry Henry.
But there were so many heroes in ****** and white.
Centre-backs Nikola Ujdur and Will Tizzard were towering presences in the middle of the box, with six of their fellow defenders unavailable for Queen’s Park.

Trump flags 25 per cent steel and aluminium tariffs
Trump flags 25 per cent steel and aluminium tariffs
President Donald Trump is poised to announce 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports into the US.
Trump commented on a range of issues to reporters aboard Air Force One, while flying to the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday.
He said he would announce reciprocal tariffs on Tuesday or Wednesday, to take effect almost immediately.
“Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25 per cent tariff,” he told reporters.
When asked about aluminium, he responded, “aluminium, too” would be subject to the trade penalties.
Trump also reaffirmed that he would announce “reciprocal tariffs” —”probably Tuesday or Wednesday” — meaning that the US would impose import duties on products in cases where another country has levied duties on US goods.
“If they are charging us 130 per cent and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way,” he said.
During his first term Trump imposed tariffs of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium, but later granted several trading partners, duty-free quotas, including Canada, Mexico, the EU and ***.
He also said the United States carried less debt that thought, and questioned whether there was fraud related to debt payments.
The US has $US36.2 ($A57.7) trillion public debt outstanding, according to the US Treasury, which plays a central role in the global financial system.
He also confirmed he was committed to buying and owning Gaza, but could give sections of the land to other states in the Middle East to help in the rebuilding effort.
He said he believed the US was making progress in its talks with Russia over the war in Ukraine but declined to provide details on a recent discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding he expects more conversations.
He also expressed doubts about the future of the US Agency for International Development and said he would let the State Department handle its remaining funding, suggesting that some of the agency’s staff could go there.

Russ Vought orders Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to stop work
Russ Vought orders Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to stop work
The Trump administration late Saturday ordered the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an independent government agency designed to protect consumers from corporate fraud and scams, to halt much of its work, amid an ongoing overhaul of the federal bureaucracy.
In an email to CFPB staff Saturday, Russ Vought — the newly confirmed director of the Office of Management and Budget and acting head of the CFPB — directed employees not to issue any proposed or formal rules, stop pending investigations and not open new investigations, halt all stakeholder engagements and abstain from issuing public communications, among other things. Vought wrote in the email, obtained by CBS News, that he was making the directive “as a faithful steward of the Bureau’s resources” and committed to implementing Mr. Trump’s policies.
The development came after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, gained access to the CFPB and began a thorough review. Two sources directly familiar with the review told CBS News that DOGE representatives gained access to the internal systems, including personnel rolls and financial records of the agency in recent days. According to the federal union representing some of CFPB’s employees, Musk deputies were added to the agency’s email directory and “spotted in the CFPB building” last week.
Mr. Trump has tapped Musk to address government efficiency and cut waste in an overhaul of the federal bureaucracy that’s begun taking shape in recent weeks, prompting a slew of directives that have in some instances created widespread confusion in corners of the federal government and beyond since the president took office.
A sign stands at the construction site for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s headquarters in Washington, Aug. 27, 2018.
Andrew Harnik / AP
On Friday, Musk posted “RIP CFPB” on his social media platform X, and a 404 error message began appearing on the agency’s website.
Mr. Trump fired Rohit Chopra, the former director of CFPB, last week. The president named Vought acting head of the CFPB late Friday, according to two administration sources with knowledge of his added role. Vought, who was confirmed by the Senate Thursday along party lines, previously served as OMB director in the first Trump administration and was involved in writing the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025.
Vought also said in a post on social media Saturday that CFPB will “not be taking its next draw of unappropriated funding” from the Federal Reserve, calling the agency’s current balance “excessive in the current fiscal environment.”
“This spigot, long contributing to CFPB’s unaccountability, is now being turned off,” Vought said.
The CFPB officially began operations in 2011 under former President Barack Obama as part of the Dodd-Frank Act. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who was crucial to its creation, posted on social media on Sunday that the agency had returned over $21 billion to consumers and that Vought was giving “big banks and giant corporations the green light to scam families.”

Newport man wants to buy tip where he lost £620m fortune

James Howells tried to sue Newport council to gain access to the landfill site
A computer engineer who lost £620m-worth of Bitcoin wants to buy the tip where he believes it is buried.
James Howells, from Newport, claimed his ex-girlfriend mistakenly chucked out a hard drive containing 8,000 bitcoins in 2013.
He tried to sue the city council to get access to the site on Newport’s Docks Way, or get £495m in compensation, but his case was dismissed by a judge.
Newport Council has been approached for comment.
The authority is planning to close the tip in the 2025-26 financial year.
It has planning permission for a solar farm on the land, expected to power the council’s new bin lorries.
Mr Howells said: “The council planning on closing the landfill so soon is quite a surprise, especially since it claimed at the High Court that closing the landfill to allow me to search would have a huge detrimental impact on the people of Newport, whilst at the same time they were planning to close the landfill anyway.”
The landfill holds more than 1.4m tonnes of waste.
Mr Howells believes the hard drive is in an area of 100,000 tonnes.
“I would be potentially interested in purchasing the landfill site,” he said.
Getty Images
The value of Bitcoin fluctuates but Mr Howells’ coins are said to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds
“I have discussed this option recently with investment partners and it is very much on the table.”
Mr Howells also wants to appeal Judge Keyser’s decision to throw out his case.
The judge said there were no grounds for the claim and “no realistic prospect” of succeeding at trial.
He ruled too much time had passed between the hard drive being lost and the claim being brought.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is often described as a cryptocurrency, a virtual currency or a digital currency and is a type of money that is completely virtual – there are no physical coins or notes.
You can use it to buy products and services, but not many shops accept Bitcoin.
In China it is ******** to trade or mine Bitcoin and its use is restricted in countries including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Turkish soccer match abandoned after team walks off
Turkish soccer match abandoned after team walks off
Turkish soccer team Adana Demirspor have walked off the field to protest refereeing decisions, causing the Super Lig match against hosts Galatasaray to be abandoned.
Galatasaray were leading Sunday’s match 1-0 following a controversial penalty – which their own coach thought shouldn’t have been awarded – when Adana players decided to walk off in the 30th minute of the top-tier game.
“If a referee mistake was made, it will be evaluated,” Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk said. “In my opinion, it was a position closer to not being a penalty.”
He added: “This is not the first mistake made against Adana Demirspor.”
The penalty was awarded in the 11th minute after Dries Mertens was apparently tripped. Despite television replays showing that the former Napoli player had seemingly dived, the video assistant referee confirmed the penalty, which was converted by new signing Alvaro Morata.
Adana reportedly grew increasingly frustrated by other refereeing decisions, prompting the club’s decision to pull the players off the field – to resounding jeers from fans.
Galatasaray’s website said its team “will win the match by default,” though the official decision will be made by the Turkish Football Federation.
“This is a great harm done to Turkish football,” Buruk said. “I am saddened for Turkish soccer. There is always an effort to make Turkish soccer look bad to the outside world.”
