Hollywood producer convicted of ******* in deaths of model and her friend
A Hollywood producer is facing life in prison after a drug-fueled night of partying led to the deaths of two Los Angeles women.
David Brian Pearce, 42, was convicted earlier this week of first-degree ******* for the deaths of Christy Giles, 24, and Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola, 26, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Additionally, Pearce faced previous charges of ***** and ******* assault against seven women – spanning from 2007 to 2021 – and was found guilty on all counts.
“A serial ******* was held accountable for the deaths of [Giles] and [Cabrales-Arzola], both of whom tragically died as a result of fentanyl poisoning, and the victimization of seven other women across Los Angeles,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement. “The office will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those who illegally supply fentanyl and destroy lives, especially those who commit ******* assaults.”
Hollywood Producer David Pearce, Accused Of ******* Two Women, May Have More Victims, Prosecutors Say
On the night of Nov. 13, 2021, Giles, a model, and Cabrales-Arzola, an architect, met Pearce, along with Brandt Osborne and Michael Ansbach, at a nearby warehouse party, according to Los Angeles police. They returned to Pearce’s nearby home, where he provided GHB – commonly referred to as a “date ***** drug” – and fentanyl to the group.

Several hours later, surveillance cameras showed the women being dropped off at two different hospitals by a group of masked men driving a car without license plates, according to prosecutors.
Giles was pronounced dead after staff members found her lifeless body outside Culver City’s Southern California Hospital. Cabrales-Arzola was resuscitated after being dropped off two miles away at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Hospital, where she died 11 days later.
Hollywood’s Dark Side Revealed In Disturbing Case Against Producer
David Pearce, right, poses with Ron Jeremy at the Pimp My Wheelchair Charity Event at Club My House on Feb. 18, 2009, in Hollywood, California.
The men were arrested one month later, according to the LAPD.
Osborn, Pearce’s co-defendant, is charged with two counts of accessory after the fact and is set to be re-tried next month after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in a mistrial.
‘Friends’ Star Matthew Perry’s Death One Year Later: What To Know About The Investigation
Hollywood producer David Pearce has been charged with ******* for the overdose deaths of Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola and Christy Giles.
An investigation following the murders revealed that Pearce was a habitual offender, using drugs to commit numerous ******* assaults against multiple women, authorities said. Seven of Pearce’s victims took the stand at the trial to testify to his ******* depravity and violent tendencies, according to prosecutors.
Pearce faces 148 years to life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 13.

Sri Lanka: Monkey triggers nationwide power outage after coming into contact with transformer
Sri Lanka: Monkey triggers nationwide power outage after coming into contact with transformer
A monkey has caused a nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka.
The primate came in contact with an electrical grid transformer in the southern suburbs of Colombo, officials say.
“An incident in which a monkey came in contact with a grid transformer caused the outage,” Sri Lankan power and energy minister Kumara Jayakody told local media.
He said that the mishap disrupted the electrical grid, triggering a nationwide power outage that lasted for several hours before power was restored.
The outage began around 11:30 am local time and continued until 5:30 pm.
Authorities are investigating how a transformer failure at a single substation could have led to a nationwide power disruption.
While monkeys occasionally cause local grid issues, it is rare for such incidents to result in a prolonged nationwide blackout.
Sri Lanka has faced severe power crises in recent years, particularly during the peak of its economic crisis in 2022.
Widespread blackouts were among the key issues that fuelled mass protests, ultimately leading to the ousting of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in July 2022.
Although economic conditions have improved following Sri Lanka’s $US3 billion ($A4.8 billion) bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund in 2023, the country remains vulnerable amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

How to watch Super Bowl 2025 on Tubi for free: Chiefs vs. Eagles
How to watch Super Bowl 2025 on Tubi for free: Chiefs vs. Eagles
The Caesars Superdome will host Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9. Here’s how to tune in to the big game! (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images) (Chris Graythen via Getty Images)
The big day has arrived, and Super Bowl LIX is imminent. The Kansas City Chiefs are shooting for an unprecedented (for the NFL) third championship win in a row, while the Philadelphia Eagles are looking to play the spoiler — and avenge their narrow 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in the 2023 Super Bowl. The kickoff for the big game will be today — Sunday, February 9 — at 6:30PM ET at Caesars Superdome. It’s the eighth time the storied New Orleans venue has hosted. The Kendrick Lamar, riding high on the five new Grammys he snagged just last Sunday, headlines the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, where he’ll be joined by SZA. Taylor Swift is expected to be at the game to cheer on beau Travis Kelce, but the cameras pointed at the luxury boxes will be splitting time between her and President Trump, who is also slated to attend the game in person.
The championship game will be broadcast nationally on Fox this year and will be available on platforms like DirecTV Stream and Fubo. Looking for a free way to tune in? The Super Bowl will also be livestreamed on Tubi — in 4K, no less!
Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch the Super Bowl.
When is Super Bowl LIX?
The 2025 Super Bowl will be held today — Sunday, Feb. 9.
What time does the Super Bowl start?
Super Bowl LIX kicks off at 6:30PM ET/3:30PM PT, but the pregame show is already well underway.
How to watch the Super Bowl live
Super Bowl LIX is airing nationally on Fox and streaming live on Tubi.
How to stream the Super Bowl for free this year
Tubi is livestreaming Fox’s coverage of the Super Bowl this year — the first time the free platform has done so. It will also be available in the Fox Sports app on mobile platforms. Beyond that, you can also sign up for free trials of DirecTV Stream, Fubo, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV, each of which carry Fox in most locations. Two important caveats: Verify that your locality includes a Fox stream by inputting your ZIP code on their respective sites. And make sure to set a reminder to cancel before the trial subscription before you get billed if you don’t want to keep these paid services.
Tubi is hosting a free livestream of Fox’s game day coverage of the 2025 Super Bowl. If you don’t have cable and aren’t looking to spend a dime to watch the big game, Tubi is a great free option to tune in. And because it’s streaming the game in 4K resolution, it’s arguably the highest fidelity way to watch — assuming your internet provider has the requisite bandwidth.
For sports fans looking to catch every moment of the game, it should be noted that this will be Tubi’s first big live event — the Fox-owned platform sees most its views from content in its on-demand library.
Beyond the Super Bowl, Tubi has a range of ad-supported on-demand content available totally free. They also have Tubi original programming including last year’s streaming standout: Sidelined: The QB and Me.
The stream has already started and appears stable. The only “catch” is that you’ll need to have a login for Tubi to watch — but email address, age and gender are the only things required for signup.
Watch free at Tubi
How to watch the 2025 Super Bowl without cable
The Tubi option above is the easiest go-to starting point for free Super Bowl streaming — but no one knows how the service will hold up under what’s certain to be its most intensive influx of concurrent users. There are plenty of worthwhile backups, each of which offer more comprehensive options for cordcutters beyond the game itself — say, watching SportsCenter on ESPN before or after the game. And most of our picks for best live TV streaming services offer free trials, so you can check them out risk-free. If you time it right, your free trial can include the Super Bowl broadcast, too.
DirecTV Stream is Engadget’s pick for “best cable without a contract.” And while the service’s new MySports package doesn’t edge out Fubo’s lineup for sports (in our opinion), we’re highlighting it here because it does include Fox local affiliates (for the big game) along with ESPN, FS1, ABC, NBC and NFL Network, to name just a few. (Important: Verify your ZIP code before signing up to confirm that the local network affiliates, including Fox, are available in your area.)
Right now, you can try all this out free, and then get your first three months for just $50/month. After that, the cost of this sports streaming package rises to $70/month (still cheaper than its competitors). So if you’re interested in trying out a live TV streaming service for watching football (next season), but aren’t ready to commit or drop a ton of money, DirecTV Stream and its MySports tier is worth checking out.
You’ll also get unlimited Cloud DVR storage included in whatever DirecTV package you choose.
Try free at DirecTV
Prior to the debut of the MySports package, we named Fubo TV the best live TV streaming service for sports. It gives you access to ESPN, NFL Network, NBC, Fox, ABC, CBS and 100+ more live channels. (Important: Verify your ZIP code before signing up to confirm that the local network affiliates, including Fox, are available in your area.) At $80/month, the live TV streaming service is definitely a big investment for football fans. But it offers nearly every channel you’ll need to watch the NFL, and still leaves you with major savings compared to a traditional cable package. Fubo subscribers also get unlimited cloud DVR storage. You can try Fubo free right now.
Try free at Fubo
YouTube TV
YouTube TV is our top overall choice for best live TV streaming service. Most locales will have Fox to watch the Super Bowl (again, check your ZIP code). YouTube TV offers sports-friendly stats and “fantasy football” views (at least during the regular season). It also offers tight integration with NFL Sunday Ticket. Just note that service requires an additional hefty fee — and is also available as a standalone.
Try free at YouTube TV
Hulu + Live TV offers a wide array of sports options (including Fox, in most localities, for the Super Bowl). It’s got fewer regional sports networks than some rivals, but this is the only one that bundles in on-demand services Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN+ as part of the base fee, which is why it’s number three on our list of top overall streaming TV recommendations.

Where is the 2025 Super Bowl?
The 2025 Super Bowl will be held at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The venue has been host to seven previous Super Bowl games.
Who is performing in the Super Bowl 59 halftime show?
Kendrick Lamar is headlining Super Bowl LIX, with a guest appearance by SZA.
Who is playing in the Super Bowl 2025?
AFC champions the Kansas City Chiefs will play NFC champs the Philadelphia Eagles.
More ways to watch Super Bowl LIX
Thanks to the wide array of streaming options detailed above, you’ll be able to watch the Super Bowl on nearly any current device with a screen. There are plenty of Super Bowl TV deals ahead of the game if you need to upgrade that aging 40-inch screen with the dead pixels in the corner. Live close to a broadcast tower of a Fox station? Attach a good old-fashioned over-the-air antenna (like the Channel Master linked above), and you can get the game for free.
Have a fast Internet connection but don’t have access to the latest and greatest streaming apps on your TV? For as little as $25 or less, a new Roku or Fire TV device will ensure that you have all of these apps (including Tubi). See our list of best streaming devices for the full range of options.

California ‘teacher of the year’ ********* abused two of her students
California ‘teacher of the year’ ********* abused two of her students
A former California “teacher of the year” sobbed in court as she admitted to ********* abusing two of her students, aged 11 and 12.
Jacqueline Ma, 35, who faces 30 years in prison, muttered “guilty” and broke down in tears as the charges were read out in court earlier this week.
She has been in custody since she was first arrested at Lincoln Acres Elementary in San Diego in 2023, months after she was one of five people named teacher of the year in San Diego County.
Two months before her trial, she changed her plea to guilty on two counts of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14 with duress.
She also admitted to a lewd act involving the second child and another count of possessing material containing a minor engaged in or simulating ******* conduct.
According to prosecutors, Ma had a months-long relationship with one of the boys and sent him explicit pictures of her while asking him to do the same back.
During a hearing in December 2023, detectives read aloud messages between the two, in which Ma professed her love for the boy, The San Diego Tribune reported.
The child reportedly wrote: “Sometimes I think you don’t understand that I am a kid still and this is my only real relationship.”
A second victim was discovered as detectives continued to investigate Ma. They claimed the teacher used her position of power to coerce the two into behaviour that “was beyond inappropriate, beyond wrong”.
Ma was named ‘teacher of the year’ just months before she was arrested
Speaking after the hearing on Tuesday, deputy district attorney Drew Hart said: “Obviously she’s taken responsibility and not gone to trial.
“The consequences of trial would have been more significant. With this resolution, we’re sparing the victims from having to come in and testify in front of a jury.
“From our office’s perspective, it was very important that these be charged as not just sex offences, but sex offences done under duress and that’s what she pled to.
“This was very significant to us, not just because she won an award, but because of who she was in the community.
‘We think this plea deal sends a message to the community, not just about sex offences on children, but when you leverage a position of trust, when you leverage good faith with parents in the community and you do this to their children, there will be significant penalties to pay.”
As part of her plea deal, the remainder of the charges were dismissed by the DA’s office.
Ma is due to be sentenced on May 9 and faces 30 years to life behind bars.

Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Liverpool: Arne Slot gets harsh FA Cup lesson in shock defeat
Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Liverpool: Arne Slot gets harsh FA Cup lesson in shock defeat
Arne Slot’s seamless succession to Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager has shown he is not only an outstanding coach but a fast learner – but he was given a harsh lesson in one of the game’s oldest rules on a wild afternoon in Devon.
Never play fast and loose with the grand old FA Cup.
The sight of Plymouth Argyle, bottom of the Championship, embarrassing Premier League leaders and the previously all-conquering Liverpool with this fourth-round victory was a compelling response to those who would to attempt to downgrade the magic and history of the competition.
And for Slot, it proved to be the first wrong move in a stellar start at Anfield, proof that you try to play tricks with the FA Cup at your peril.
Liverpool’s head coach will point, with some justification, to priorities elsewhere having reached the Carabao Cup final by sweeping Tottenham Hotspur aside on Thursday.
They also have the chance to cement their healthy lead in the Premier League against Everton in Goodison Park’s final Merseyside derby on Wednesday.
This cannot disguise the fact, however, that Slot and Liverpool got this wrong.
In making 10 changes here, Slot was guilty of taking the FA Cup and Plymouth Argyle lightly, the result being acute embarrassment.
Liverpool still had plenty of experience and quality in their line-up, perhaps enough to beat a struggling Championship side, with the international trio of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa in attack.
This whole experience, though, was as much of a let-down for Slot’s team as it was a glorious one for Plymouth.
And those three forwards – Diaz, Jota and Chiesa – were particularly disappointing, playing as if the outing was a chore rather than a high-profile FA Cup tie.
Questions can also be asked elsewhere about Slot’s approach.
Slot did not even have the safety net of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Alex Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Andrew Robertson on the bench, just in case things went wrong for Liverpool.
As they did, quite spectacularly.

Palliative care co-ordinator in P.E.I. recognized for efforts to educate health workers, community
Palliative care co-ordinator in P.E.I. recognized for efforts to educate health workers, community
Palliative care wasn’t on Susan Doucette’s radar as a job prospect when she graduated from nursing school, but all it took was a short time working in the field.
“I really liked the work and just felt like it was where I fit… and felt like I could really do some good work,” she said.
Doucette is now in her 31st year working in that health-care stream. She became a provincial co-ordinator for home-based palliative care in P.E.I. about a year ago.
Her prediction that she could do good work in the profession has certainly come to pass. Doucette was recently awarded a King Charles III Coronation Medal for her leadership in advancing palliative care in the province.
“I believe strongly that you get more out of it when you put more into it,” she said.
“So it’s a great honour to feel like somebody has recognized the work I’m doing enough to even nominate me for the award, but it’s a bit humbling too because I don’t do what I do to get recognition.”
David Hawes of Wabush is one of 30,000 people receiving King Charles III Coronation medals across Canada.

The medals commemorate the coronation of King Charles III. Eligible candidates “must have made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community of Canada, or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada,” according to the federal government’s website.
Doucette is one of 25 people working in palliative care from across the country to receive the medal. She is the only honouree from Prince Edward Island.
“From creating educational tools for healthcare professionals to personally ensuring that patients and families are well-supported, Susan Doucette exemplifies leadership in advancing palliative care in PEI,” Laurel Gillespie, CEO of the ********* Hospice Palliative Care Association, said in a statement.
Taking the fear out of palliative care
Through her role with the province, Doucette focuses on educating health-care workers and the general community about the benefits of palliative care.
She said many people used to look at the palliative option as a last resort for end-of-life care, when in reality the model has shifted to include providing comfort from the outset of a terminal diagnosis.
“The benefits of having a palliative approach to care early on in your disease trajectory improves quality of life, it decreases anxiety, it decreases depression,” she said.
“It’s taken a bit longer for people to get that message because some people were scared of the word ‘palliative,’ and still are.”
This approach to care includes not just patients in the provincial palliative care centre, but more often those who are in long-term care settings or receiving treatment at home.
Chochinov developed an intervention called “dignity therapy” which involves patients answering open-ended questions to talk about their lives or what matters most to them.
‘I’m a firm believer that we need to take care of our people, and that’s the essence of palliative care,’ says Doucette. (Shutterstock)
Though the perception of palliative care as a scary thing is slowly changing, Doucette encourages other health workers and the public to spread the word that it can improve a patient’s quality of life.
If anything, she hopes being recognized with the king’s coronation medal helps to increase that awareness.
“I’ve always felt that if we can empower other health-care workers then the whole health system gets empowered, and that will only create better palliative care for all of our … patients and their families out in the community,” Doucette said.
“I’m a firm believer that we need to take care of our people, and that’s the essence of palliative care.”

Vehicle manufacturer Mitsubishi has decided to cancel plans to build a $1.3 billion chemical plant in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, the Louisiana Illuminator reported.
Originally, the plant was intended to produce methyl methacrylate or MMA. This chemical is used to produce a wide range of plastic and rubber products, as well as paints and glazes. According to Oil and Gas Watch, it would have produced 385,000 tons of MMA per year, and the Louisiana Illuminator reported that it would have employed 125 people.
While creating jobs is good for the local economy, these ones wouldn’t have been worth the cost.
The Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, a nonprofit dedicated to industry analysis, said the Mitsubishi Geismar facility was “the wrong project, at the wrong place and time, with the wrong financial scenario” in its report on the situation, which it released in July. Based on data from the Environmental Protection Agency, it estimated the plant would have been one of the worst 50 polluters in Louisiana if it had been completed.
The plant would have produced an estimated 780,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, alongside other pollutants. That’s a serious addition to the toxic pollution in an area of the country that has already been nicknamed “******* Alley.”
The many manufacturing and industrial plants along the Mississippi River are a major environmental justice issue. People who live nearby face serious health risks, including a heightened risk of *******, and shorter lifespans. The communities impacted are disproportionately made up of people of color — as is frequently the case in heavily polluted areas across America.

************ prisoners show frailty and abuse, like Israeli hostages
Feb. 9 (UPI) — While many expressed outrage over the frail appearance of Israeli hostages released Saturday, human rights groups raised concerns about the lack of similar indignation over the conditions faced by ************ prisoners, who also showed signs of torture.
The majority of ************ prisoners are being released with health problems, the ************ Prisoners Society, a non-governmental organization in the West Bank, said in a statement Saturday. Seven of the Palestinians who were freed Saturday in the fifth exchange of captives were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
“Among the most prominent crimes committed against them are: torture, deprivation of medical treatment, enforced starvation, systematic abuse and humiliation as well as severe beatings, which take place with the aim to kill prisoners or to cause them lifelong injuries and health issues,” the NGO said in its statement.
The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, after the fourth exchange of captives on Feb. 1, published photos of one of the ************ prisoners who appears severely emaciated.
In the image, the man is seen with a prominent ribcage and skeletal structure indicating extreme malnourishment or prolonged deprivation of basic nutrition. His skin is marked with visible abrasions, bruises, and discolorations, suggesting physical trauma or neglect.

“Following their release, many of the inmates and detainees required immediate hospital transfers for critical medical examinations,” Euro-Med said in its statement. “These circumstances demonstrate how Israel has transformed its jails into institutionalized torture facilities for ************ detainees and prisoners.”
The Jerusalem Post reported that Israel’s military and Prison Service forced ************ prisoners to watch propaganda film showing Gaza’s devastation as they exited their cells before their release from captivity.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau staff to work remotely, HQ shuttered
Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Acting Director Russell Vought speaks with reporters during a press briefing at the White House in Washington, U.S., March 11, 2019.
Jonathan Ernst | Reuters
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau employees were told Sunday to work remotely because their Washington, D.C., headquarters would be closed through Feb. 14, according to a memo obtained by CNBC.
The memo, from CFPB Chief Operating Officer Adam Martinez, follows an email sent Saturday from newly-installed acting CFPB director Russell Vought which instructed staff to suspend nearly all activities of the regulator, including supervising financial firms.
The developments come amid concern about the fate of the CFPB and its staff after operatives from Elon Musk’s DOGE arrived at the regulator late last week. The DOGE employees have been given access to CFPB data sources, including staff performance reviews, said people with knowledge of the situation who have asked for anonymity out of fear of reprisal.
Musk, who last year called for the deletion of the CFPB, on Friday posted “CFPB RIP” on his X social media platform.
Besides putting a freeze on nearly all CFPB activity with his inaugural memo, Vought on Saturday posted on X that he was halting the flow of fresh funding to the agency. “This spigot, long contributing to CFPB’s unaccountability, is now being turned off,” Vought wrote.
Vought, who was confirmed as President Donald Trump’s head of the Office of Management and Budget on Thursday, is one of the authors of Project 2025, the master plan to reshape the federal government.
The CFPB and a representative for Musk didn’t immediately return requests for comment.

CFPB employees are bracing for the possibility of being put on administrative leave or laid off, similar to what Trump officials have attempted with the U.S. Agency for International Development, according to people at the bureau.
While there are roughly 1,700 CFPB employees, only a few hundred workers have positions which are mandated by law to exist, according to a person with knowledge of the agency.
Mass layoffs would jeopardize the mission of the CFPB, created in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to prevent banks and other financial firms from exploiting Americans. Bank trade groups have long accused the CFPB of being unfair and have fought the agency’s rules in court, even unsuccessfully attempting to declare the agency unconstitutional.
At risk are several CFPB efforts that would’ve saved consumers tens of billions of dollars, including restrictions on credit card and overdraft fees, and a rule that would’ve removed $49 billion in medical bills from the credit reports of 15 million Americans.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects Elon Musk to find hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse at the Pentagon during an audit that the billionaire will lead.
“I’m going to tell him very soon, like maybe in 24 hours, to go check the Department of Education. … Then I’m going to go, go to the military. Let’s check the military,” Trump said in a Super Bowl interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, an excerpt of which was aired on Sunday morning.
“We’re going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse,” Trump said of the largest federal department.
The Pentagon’s budget is approaching $1 trillion per year. In December, then-President Joe Biden signed a bill authorizing $895 billion in defense spending for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

Musk, who the White House says is a special government employee, has been tasked by Trump to lead an effort to slash the size of the U.S. federal workforce. As part of that initiative, Musk aides have sought access to confidential information in computer systems at various government agencies.

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz suggested in a separate interview on Sunday that the Pentagon’s shipbuilding processes could be an area of particular interest for the Department of Government Efficiency, and he characterized the Pentagon in general as full of unnecessary bloat.
“Everything there seems to cost too much, take too long and deliver too little to the soldiers… We do need business leaders to go in there and absolutely reform the Pentagon’s acquisition process,” Waltz said in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.

“There is plenty to look into in shipbuilding, which is an absolute mess,” Waltz added.
Leaders from across the political spectrum have long criticized waste and inefficiency at the Pentagon. But Democrats and civil service unions say Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency lacks the expertise to restructure the Pentagon, and their efforts risk exposing classified programs.
Musk’s companies also hold major contracts with the Pentagon, which has raised significant conflict of interest concerns.

Europe can act ‘within an hour’ if US levies tariffs
Europe can act ‘within an hour’ if US levies tariffs
Europe is prepared to respond “within an hour” if the United States levies tariffs against the European Union, ******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz says.
In a pre-election debate with his conservative challenger Friedrich Merz, Scholz was asked by a moderator if the EU had a “list of cruelties” with which to respond if the US imposed tariffs.
“Yes, to phrase it in the most cautious diplomatic way. We as the European Union can act within an hour, Scholz said on Sunday.
“We should not delude ourselves. What the US president says is what he means.”
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to enact tariffs against the US’s largest trading partners, accusing them of free-riding on American prosperity.
Trade policy is an EU competence, run by the European Commission in Brussels.
Scholz also warned of a “European crisis” if his conservative rival Merz passes proposed reforms to migration law.
Merz’s proposal to turn away all migrants at the country’s borders “contradicts European law”, Scholz said.
Germany’s neighbours could refuse to take back migrants, Scholz said.
“Then we would have a European crisis.”
The chancellor said Merz’s measures were “against ******* interests”.
Merz is the favourite to become the country’s next chancellor, with his conservative CDU/CSU alliance leading the polls on around 30 per cent ahead of the vote on February 23.
The debate is taking place just over a week after Merz controversially decided to pass a motion on migration in Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, with the support of the far-right AfD party.

Virgin River ‘s Callum Kerr Mourns Mom and Stepdad Who Were Found Dead
Virgin River ‘s Callum Kerr Mourns Mom and Stepdad Who Were Found Dead
Originally appeared on E! Online
Virgin River actor Callum Kerr is navigating a tragic loss.
The Scottish performer’s mother, Dawn Searle, and stepfather, Andrew Searle, were found dead at their home in Les Pesquies, south of the commune of Villefranche-de-Rouergue in France Feb. 6, multiple outlets have reported. They are survived by Callum, 30, and his sister and Andrew’s two children from a previous relationship.
A family statement about the tragedy was posted on the actor’s Instagram Feb. 8. “At this time, Callum and Amanda Kerr are grieving the loss of their mother, Dawn Searle (née Smith, Kerr),” the message read, “while Tom Searle and Ella Searle are mourning the loss of their father, Andrew Searle.”
The post continued, “No family member is available for media interviews or comments. We kindly request that their privacy be respected during this difficult *******. We will provide updates as appropriate. Thank you for your understanding.”
The causes of the deaths of Dawn, 56, and Andrew, 62, have not been released.
More from E! Online
Villefranche-de-Rouergue Mayor Jean-Sébastien Orcibal has also spoken out about the tragedy.
“I was phoned yesterday at around 12.30pm as mayor to be told that two bodies were found in their property,” he told the U.K. newspaper the Telegraph Feb. 7. “With the local police and gendarmes, we went to the house to secure the property. Both to shut off access to the house but also to make sure that no one could get out, as an intervention was carried out to make sure that no suspects remained in the house.”

The mayor noted that crime was typically low in the area, adding, “We’ve only had one burglary in a neighbourhod in years.”
Orcibal also said he had officiated the couple’s 2023 wedding ceremony, in which Callum played a special part.
“Not many people can say they walked their own mother down the aisle,” the actor wrote in September of that year on Instagram., alongside a pic of himself, wearing a traditional Scottish kilt, escorting his mother. “What a pleasure!! I love you mum. Congrats to Dawn and Andy on their wonderful wedding day and here’s to a tremendous life together for the happy couple.”

Andrew, who used to work as a financial fraud investigator, and Dawn both retired to France around 10 years ago, the newspaper reported.
“They were British but they really wanted to integrate into local life,” Orcibal said. “Every year they invited more than a hundred people for a drink at their home.”
The mayor continued, “They had two pedigree dogs that they walked along the river every day. And every time they bumped up into someone, more than a quick ‘bonjour’, they would stop and talk. They were very kind and courteous.”
Johan Herault, who runs a tour company based in the area, said the couple’s deaths come “as a terrible shock.”
“They were such lovely people,” he told the newspaper. “My wife was very good friends with Dawn. She is from New Zealand and liked speaking English with them. We often went to see them.”
Andrew, he said, “never mentioned that he was in any danger,” adding, “This is an incredibly calm and peaceful area. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Tropical cyclone warning for residents on 350km stretch of West *********** coastline
Tropical cyclone warning for residents on 350km stretch of West *********** coastline
Communities in northern Western Australia are bracing for a possible tropical cyclone expected to bring large waves, high winds and heavy rain.
A tropical cyclone watch was issued on Sunday for a 350km stretch of coast between Cockatoo Island and Bidyadanga, including Broome.
The tropical low was expected to move along the Kimberley coast on Sunday, whipping up damaging gusts of up to 100km/h.
It was then forecast to reach tropical cyclone intensity late on Sunday or early Monday.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said gales could develop as early as Monday morning with increased rain and large waves expected from late Sunday.
“Forecast rainfall in the flood watch area is expected to result in river rises, areas of flooding and may adversely affect road conditions,” she said.
“Roads may quickly become impassable and some communities may become isolated once that rain starts to fall.”
Between Tuesday and Thursday, the weather system was expected to move southwest towards the Pilbara coast and further strengthen as a tropical cyclone.
Ms Bradbury said there were still “a number of ways” the weather could play out.
“This will depend on how quickly the tropical low becomes a tropical cyclone, and how much energy it can tap into to sustain its cyclone strength,” she said.
“We are likely to see further gale force winds, however, with damaging wind gusts, locally heavy (rain) falls and flooding, high tides and large waves along the northwest WA coast as the system continues to develop.”
Parts of NSW and Victoria were also expected to be battered by severe thunderstorms, large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain on Monday.
The severe weather follows days of heavy rain in north Queensland where coastal and inland centres including Townsville, Cardwell and Ingham have been most affected.

Vance and Musk question the authority of the courts as Trump’s agenda faces legal pushback
Vance and Musk question the authority of the courts as Trump’s agenda faces legal pushback
WASHINGTON (AP) — Top Trump administration officials are openly questioning the judiciary’s authority to serve as a check on executive power as the new president’s sweeping agenda faces growing pushback from the courts.
Over the past 24 hours, officials ranging from billionaire Elon Musk to Vice President JD Vance have not only criticized a federal judge’s decision early Saturday that blocks Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing Treasury Department records, but have also attacked the legitimacy of judicial oversight, a fundamental pillar of American democracy, which is based on the separation of powers.
“If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, that would be ********. If a judge tried to command the attorney general in how to use her discretion as a prosecutor, that’s also ********. Judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power,” Vance wrote on X on Sunday morning.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
That post came hours after Musk said overnight that the judge who ruled against him should be impeached.
“A corrupt judge protecting corruption. He needs to be impeached NOW!” said Musk, who has been tasked by President Donald Trump with rooting out waste across the federal government.
Musk also shared a post from a user who had suggested that the Trump administration openly defy the court order.
“I don’t like the precedent it sets when you defy a judicial ruling, but I’m just wondering what other options are these judges leaving us,” the person had written, in part.
The court order against Musk barred his team temporarily from accessing a Treasury system that contains sensitive personal data, such as Social Security and bank account numbers for millions of Americans. Musk and his team say they are simply rooting through government systems to identify waste and abuse at the direction of the Republican president.
Deputy White House chief of staff of Stephen Miller called the ruling “an assault on the very idea of democracy itself.”
“What we continue to see here is the idea that rogue bureaucrats who are elected by no one, who answer to no one, who have lifetime tenure jobs, who we would be told can never be fired, which, of course, is not true, that the power has been cemented and accumulated for years, whether it be with the Treasury bureaucrats or the FBI bureaucrats or the CIA bureaucrats or the USAID bureaucrats, with this unelected shadow force that is running our government and running our country,” Miller said on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”
The pushback comes as the administration’s efforts to dismantle government agencies and eliminate large swaths of the federal workforce are being held up by the courts. Judges have also blocked Trump, at least temporarily, from moving forward with mass federal buyouts, from placing thousands of USAID workers on leave and from implementing an executive order that seeks to end birthright citizenship for anyone born in the U.S.
Early Saturday, U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer issued a preliminary injunction after 19 Democratic attorneys general sued, alleging the Trump administration allowed Musk’s team access to the Treasury Department’s central payment system in violation of federal law.
The payment system handles tax refunds, Social Security benefits, veterans’ benefits and much more, sending out trillions of dollars every year while containing an expansive network of Americans’ personal and financial data. A hearing is set for Feb. 14.
Democrats have been sounding alarms over Musk and Trump’s efforts, including efforts to halt spending that has already been appropriated by Congress. Under the U.S. Constitution, Congress is the body in charge of spending.
“I think this is the most serious Constitutional crisis the country has faced, certainly, since Watergate,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said on ABC’s “This Week.” “This is a red alert moment when this entire country has to understand that our democracy is at risk.”
Murphy expressed concern that the courts are ill-prepared for the onslaught they are facing.
“The pace of this assault on the Constitution in order to serve the billionaire class, it is absolutely dizzying. And so, you have to run a full-scale opposition,” Murphy said. “Ultimately, you’ve got to bring the American public into this conversation because we need our Republican colleagues in the House and in the Senate ultimately to put a stop to this. You cannot just rely on the court system.”
Republicans, who have largely stood in lockstep behind the president since he was sworn in for a second term, did so again on Sunday.
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan blasted the court ruling for the Treasury Department case while arguing that the president should be able to implement his agenda as he sees fit.
“I assume we will argue this out in court, like the other 17 or 18 decisions we have seen in the last several days. That all is going to get argued out in court. And, frankly, we knew the left, we knew the Democrats were going to do this,” the Republican said on CNN’s “Inside Politics.”

Invictus Games for wounded veterans kicks off in Vancouver with star-studded ceremony

Entertainers and dignitaries led by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, officially kicked off the 2025 Invictus Games in British Columbia on Saturday in a star-studded opening ceremony.
The kickoff event at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium featured artists Katy Perry, Roxane Bruneau, Noah Kahan, Nelly Furtado and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, with the prince and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, seen clapping and singing along to the performances.
But Prince Harry said in his opening speech that the Games are meant to place the focus more on the competitors — wounded military veterans — who embody courage, resilience and leadership in setting an example for the rest of the world.
“Your leadership did not end when you stepped off the battlefield or took off the uniform,” he said, eliciting tears from some visibly moved competitors.
Prince Harry founded the Games in 2014 for wounded, injured or sick service personnel and veterans.

Up to 550 athletes from 23 nations are taking part in 11 adaptive sports in Whistler and Vancouver, with several of the events taking place in the same venues that hosted the 2010 Olympic Games.
Four host nation chiefs entered the stadium to the beat of drums Saturday afternoon, holding raised paddles — a traditional sign of welcome for strangers arriving on the shores of Coast Salish Indigenous communities.
The athletes parade began with Germany, which hosted the games in 2023 in Duesseldorf, and ended with Team Canada whose members wore matching blue and ****** flannel shirts.
The stadium was transformed into what organizers called a “sea of blue,” which represented the Pacific coastline, with blue banners and flags waving along the floor as audience members held up blue pompoms. A balloon humpback whale and silver dolphins flew over the crowd.
Dignitaries in attendance included Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada, and B.C. Premier David Eby, who took a moment to mention the current political climate between Canada and the United States, where President Donald Trump has threatened tariffs on ********* products and said he wants Canada to become the 51st state.
Eby addressed Team USA directly, noting that ********* soldiers “have fought and died and cried and celebrated beside Americans for generations,” and he said that Canadians will always be there for the U.S.
“And you know what, if we ever need you, and it came down to it, I know you’d be there in a second. God bless USA. God bless Canada,” Eby told the crowd.

This year is the first time the Games will feature winter sports, including the skeleton, skiing events and wheelchair curling, alongside indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball events as it has previously.
Event producer Patrick Roberge said that the four First Nations co-hosting the Games represent the “shared healing journey of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.”
Gabrille Hack was among the attendees who filed into BC Place ahead of the opening ceremony. She said her mother was volunteering at the event and got her tickets.
“Seeing people in their military outfits and everything — I think it’s just such a unique atmosphere,” Hack said in an interview before the ceremony, adding that watching the music artists live was another major draw.
That sentiment was shared by fellow ceremony-goer Gina Behnke. The Germany-native said Kahan was the main reason she wanted to attend.
“Noah Kahan is my favourite artist and tickets for his concerts are really expensive, so this was a chance to see him, even if it’s just for one song,” Behnke said outside the stadium.
But Kahan performed two of his hits for the crowd, including “Northern Attitude” and “Stick Season.”
Addressing the athletes, Kahan called them inspiring.
“It’s one of those things we’ll remember forever,” he said. “We’ll remember the bravery in this room. The openness with your struggles inspires us all.”

********* singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, who was the first headliner to take the stage, performed a medley of “Spirit Indestructible,” “Promiscuous,” “I’m Like a Bird,” “Turn Off the Light” and “Powerless.” She was joined by guests music producer Mattmac and dance group Ill Abilities.
Francophone singer Roxane Bruneau performed songs “J’pas stressée” and “À ma manière,” performing alongside the 80-person Invictus Games Dance Corp.
Chris Martin of Coldplay performed the Invictus Anthem live for the first time. The song, which he penned for the first Games in London in 2014, has formed the basis of medal ceremonies for all Invictus Games. He completed his set by playing Coldplay hits “Higher Power” and “Viva La Vida.”
As the final chorus of “Viva La Vida” rang out, the video panned to the singing crowd, pausing briefly on Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, who could be seen taking part.
American pop star Katy Perry closed the show with a medley of “Roar,” “Dark Horse,” “Part of Me,” “Lifetimes” and “Firework” to a rapturous crowd.
Grace Pachmann, a longtime fan of the singer, said seeing her live was “a dream come true” and the entire event was “really inspiring.”
“It was very heartwarming (and) very emotional. It was really cool to see so many different stories and so many people coming together from bunch of different countries, and I really enjoyed it.”
This year marks the seventh Games and the second time they have been held in Canada. Toronto previously acted as host in 2017.
Prince Harry and Meghan are expected to be in attendance throughout the Games.
Last year, the pair attended training camp in B.C., where the prince tried out sit-skiing and skeleton in Whistler before heading to Vancouver to try wheelchair curling alongside ********* singer Michael Bublé.
After the ceremony ended, Prince Harry headed down the street to Rogers Arena, where he performed the ceremonial puck drop before the Vancouver Canucks’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Games run until Feb. 16, and will conclude with a closing ceremony at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena that will feature artists including country singer Jelly Roll and ********* rock band Barenaked Ladies.
