Couple give two homes to The Wallich Couple give two homes to The Wallich The Wallich Retired professors Valerie and Chris Norris donated two four-bedroom homes to a homeless charity A retired couple who bought a new home together after meeting online have donated their previous homes to a homelessness charity. Valerie Norris, 71, and Chris Norris, 77, handed over the four-bedroom houses to The Wallich in Swansea, who said more than 11,000 people in Wales are living in temporary housing. “We’re both comfortably off, not wealthy by current standards, but we have more than enough to live on,” said Chris, a poet, novelist and retired professor. Mike Bobbett, a director at The Wallich, described Valerie and Chris as “shining examples of the good in people,” and said he hoped they would inspire others to use what they have to end homelessness in Wales. “We have enough money to do the things we want to do still,” Valerie, also a retired professor, told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. After first leasing the homes to The Wallich for free, Valerie said: “We thought why don’t we just bite the bullet and give these houses. “That was going to be our intention in our wills so we thought why don’t we just give them now.” Chris said their family members are working and have all been positive about the donation. “It seemed just a sensible thing to do really, no sacrifice, and I think quite a lot of people, if they reflected on their situation and current social needs, [they] might reach the same decision.” He hopes similar donations will become “a more frequent occurrence”. The Wallich The homes will be used as an alternative to bed and breakfast accommodation for people in need in Swansea The couple have a long history of working for social good: Chris raises money for charity as a singer in the socialist street choir Cor Cochion, while Valerie has been volunteering with Cruse Bereavement Support for 21 years. Chris said he and his wife were very aware of the acute need for overnight housing in Swansea when they made their decision to donate. “They are lovely people and to be doing the work they do is quite amazing,” said Valerie of The Wallich. “Both of us have done a whole load of travelling in our careers, too much really, and so we don’t want to do that anymore,” she added. The Wallich The donation has been described as ‘extraordinary’ “We are quite content to just live a quiet life, eat out now and again, and we’ve got everything we need.” “A donation of two houses is extraordinary,” said Mr Bobbett. “Valerie and Chris are brilliant.” “They care about people, and they are shining examples of the kindness of people in the world. We’re overwhelmed by their generosity,” he added. Session ********** enables hackers to gain unauthorized access to a victim’s online account or profile by intercepting or cracking session tokens. What is page **********? Also known as 302 redirect ********** or URL **********, a page ********** attack tricks web crawlers used by search engines into redirecting traffic to the hacker. The web community introduced 302 HTTP responses to give website owners a way to temporarily redirect users — and search engine crawlers — to a different URL in cases where a website is undergoing maintenance or testing. Bad actors realized that, by implementing carefully planned 302 redirects, they could take over a victim’s site in search engine results. Web crawlers mistake a new page — created and owned by the ********* — as an honest redirect from the old page. Essentially, all the victim’s page authority and ranking signals are transferred to the *********’s page due to the false assumption by the web crawler that the victim configured the redirect. While still technically possible, page hijackings decreased as web crawlers became more sophisticated. What is IP **********? Routers used by internet service providers (ISPs) rely on a routing protocol known as Border Gateway Protocol. BGP is designed so routers operated by one provider can announce to routers operated by other providers the IP address blocks it owns. Furthermore, although BGP-based IP ********** is well known, the real-world extent of the threat is hard to study because of the walled-off nature of ISPs. Backbone routers that use BGP to exchange routing information can be vulnerable to cyber hijacks, such as IP **********. Recent cyber ********** attacks In November 2024, retail and grocery supply chain software supplier Blue Yonder experienced a ransomware attack. The attack severely disrupted warehouse management systems and internal payroll issues. The hackers stole 680 gigabytes (GB) of Blue Yonder data, including thousands of email lists and more than 200,000 insurance documents. The Termite gang claimed responsibility for the breach. A month earlier, an overseas ransomware attack on Casio in Tokyo gave hackers access to its employees’ personal data and information on its business partners. This included contract, invoice and sales data and a large cache of internal legal documents — only the customer database was untouched. The hackers used a phishing scheme to execute the attack, grabbing 204 GB of sensitive data. In 2020, hackers compromised software company SolarWinds’ Orion IT monitoring and management software. Used by thousands of government agencies and businesses around the world, the hackers — suspected to be nation-state actors — deployed malicious code in Orion, thereby gaining access to the data, systems and networks of not just SolarWinds customers, but also those of organizations’ customers and partners. The SolarWinds attack is an example of cyber ********** in that the hackers hijacked Orion’s software compilation process to place a ********* inside legitimate, digitally signed software updates. SolarWinds then pushed these updates out to customers, including tech behemoths Microsoft and FireEye, as well as U.S. government agencies, including the departments of Homeland Security, State, Commerce and Treasury. How can organizations protect against cyber **********? Some of the best defenses against cyber ********** attacks are also some of the easiest to implement and include the following measures: Use strong password policies. Exactly when and how they will conclude isn’t clear. But President Vladimir Putin has already scored something of a diplomatic victory simply by holding this telephone conversation. After all, three years ago he was out in the political wilderness. Putin’s decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine had turned him into a pariah. The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning Russia for its “unlawful use of force against Ukraine.” Russia was hit by thousands of international sanctions. The following year the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the Kremlin leader. As for the President of the United States – then Joe Biden – he left no doubt of what he thought of his Russian counterpart, condemning Putin as a “murderous dictator” and a “pure thug”. After Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there were no more telephone calls between Putin and Biden. Fast forward to 2025. A change of president has brought a change of style, a change of language – and a totally different US approach to Russia. Trump says he wants to “work together, very closely” with Putin to end the war in Ukraine. He hopes they will be “visiting each other’s nations”. Clearly, so does Vladimir Putin, who invited Trump to Moscow. If that visit goes ahead, it will signify a major shift in US-Russian relations. An American president has not visited Russia for more than a decade. In many ways Putin has already got what he wants – the chance to negotiate directly with the United States on Ukraine, possibly over the heads of Kyiv and Europe – as well as the opportunity to put himself at the top table of international politics. It remains unclear, though, how far Putin will be willing to compromise. Russian officials claim Moscow is ready for talks but always refer back to Putin’s so-called peace proposal of June 2024, which reads more like an ultimatum. Under that plan Russia would get to keep all the Ukrainian territory it has seized, plus some more land still under Ukrainian control. On top of that, Ukraine would not be allowed to join Nato and western sanctions against Russia would be scrapped. As one Russian newspaper put it earlier this week: “Russia is ready for talks. Archaeologists have found a substantial piece of the ancient city’s first basilica – a 2,000 year old public building where major political, economic and administrative decisions were made. The excavation has so far revealed sections of stone wall that formed the base of the basilica, which would have been two-and-half storeys high. The site, which will eventually be opened to the public, sheds light on the city’s beginnings. Tony Jolliffe/BBC Archaeologists found the Roman masonry under the concrete floor of the office “This is so significant – this is the heart of Roman London,” said Sophie Jackson, from the Museum of London Archaeology (Mola), who revealed the new find exclusively to BBC News. “This building will tell us so much about the origins of London, why London grew and why it was chosen as the capital of Britain. Earlier archaeological investigations revealed the ancient basilica’s approximate location, so the team created several small test pits to see what was hidden beneath the concrete floor. On the third attempt, digging between the filing cabinets, they struck lucky. “You can see a huge chunk of Roman masonry, and it’s incredible that it survives this well. We’re absolutely thrilled that there’s so much of it here,” said Sophie Jackson. Other artefacts have been found too, including a roof tile imprinted with the stamp of an official from the ancient city. The basilica was part of London’s forum, a social and commercial hub with a courtyard that was about the size of a football pitch. “The basilica is the town hall, and then in front of it was a big open market square with a range of shops and offices around the outside,” explained Ms Jackson. “It’s the place you came to do business, to get your court case sorted out, it’s where laws were made, and it’s where decisions were made about London, but also about the rest of the country.” It was built around 80 AD, just a few decades after the Romans invaded Britain and founded Londinium – the Roman name for the city. But the first basilica and forum were only in use for about 20 years. They were replaced by a much larger second forum, perhaps reflecting how quickly the city was growing in size and importance. The Roman remains, which will now be fully excavated, are to be incorporated into the new offices – pending planning approval – and opened up to the public. For the architects, redesigning a building around an archaeological site has had some technical challenges. “The scheme has been comprehensively adjusted,” explained James Taylor from architecture firm Woods Bagot. “Simple things like the columns have had to literally move position, so you’re not destroying all these special stones that we found in the ground.” And so as not to disturb what’s there, fewer lifts can now be installed – and this has meant that the team has had to reduce the height of the building. But Mr Taylor said the effort will be worth it. “To actually see people using and enjoying the space, moving through the public hall and down to see the remains, will be absolutely incredible.” Woods Bagot An artist’s impression of what the public will eventually be able to see This is the latest piece of Roman history to be discovered lying beneath the streets of London’s Square Mile. And there’s a growing effort to find innovative ways to show these sites to the public. Chris Hayward from the City of London Corporation says he wants more people to experience the link between the past and the present. “The fact that Roman London is beneath your feet is, frankly, quite a remarkable emotion to experience,” he said. “You can actually see and visualise how Roman London would have been in those times. Reciprocal. If they charge us, we charge them.” The president had suggested that the order would come on Tuesday or Wednesday. But when Tuesday passed without the tariffs being officially announced, Trump was not specific on his timing, telling reporters Wednesday afternoon: “I may do it later on, or I may do it tomorrow morning.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she believes that the tariffs would come before Thursday’s visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As Trump has unleashed a series of tariffs after being in power for less than a month, he has fully taken ownership of the path of the U.S. economy. It’s a bet that his economic ideas can eventually deliver meaningful results for voters, even if by Trump’s own admission the import taxes could involve some financial pain in the form of inflation and economic disruptions. The teens, Parker Tirrell, 16, and Iris Turmelle, 15, previously sued New Hampshire education officials over a state law prohibiting them from competing on girls’ sports teams at their public high schools. On Wednesday, their attorneys GLAD Law and the ACLU of New Hampshire filed an amended complaint asking the court to expand the case nationally to challenge Trump’s executive order. Chris Erchull, senior staff attorney at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, one of the plaintiffs’ representatives, said the executive order and others “amount to a coordinated campaign to prevent transgender people from functioning in society.” “School sports are an important part of education — something no child should be denied simply because of who they are,” Erchull said in a news release. “Our clients Parker and Iris simply want to go to school, learn, and play on teams with their peers.” Last week, Trump signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” and declared, “The war on women’s sports is over.” The order threatens to rescind federal funding from educational programs that allow transgender girls to participate in girls’ sports, in part by using Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education. Other executive orders in the first few weeks of the Trump administration have targeted transgender women in the military and in the federal prison system. Those have similarly faced legal challenges; a federal judge last week blocked the administration from enforcing the order seeking to have transgender women detained in men’s prison facilities. The participation of transgender girls and women in sports has raised questions about the balance between inclusion and fairness on the playing field. Twenty-five states across the country have passed laws banning transgender youth from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity, according to the Movement Advancement Project, a nonprofit think tank. According to the lawsuit, Parker plays on her high school’s soccer team, and Iris wants to try out for her school’s tennis team. A news release from the two includes quotes explaining in simple language why they want to play sports. “I love playing soccer and we had a great season last fall,” said Parker. “I just want to go to school like other kids and keep playing the game I love.” “The chance to try out for tennis means new teammates, new friends, and a sense of fun and belonging,” Iris said. “I just want the same opportunities as other girls at my school.” Their suit against the New Hampshire law remains ongoing. Overwatch 2 has been through several changes since it left early access in 2023, many of which brought the game from the revamped structure that made it a sequel to something that works more like a free-to-play version of the original Overwatch. Perks are legitimately new, though. Now during a match you’ll be given two opportunities to pick a perk for your hero. One minor perk after leveling up for the first time, which adds smaller upgrades like a passive ability or a cooldown reduction, and one major perk that can alter the play style of your hero. For example, Torbjorn can pick from turrets that stick to ceilings and walls (a frankly diabolical upgrade) or an even more powerful “Level 3 turret.” Blizzard Entertainment As a reward for your hard work in-game, Blizzard is also adding to Overwatch 2‘s battle pass system by reintroducing loot boxes as another way to get cosmetics. You can earn loot boxes by completely weekly and event rewards, and you’ll get one Legendary Loot Box for having the Free Battle Pass or two Legendary Loot Boxes for having the Premium Battle Pass, as well. Beyond publishing drop rates for boxes, Blizzard is guaranteeing that “a Rare or better item will drop in every single box, with an Epic item within five consecutive boxes and a Legendary item within twenty consecutive boxes.” Blizzard Entertainment Coming a bit later in Season 16, Overwatch 2 will get an entirely new “Stadium” game mode that draws clear inspiration from competing shooters Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant. In a Stadium match you’ll be placed on a team of five fighting to earn currency across seven possible rounds. In-between rounds you can spend that currency to unlock upgrades and customize your abilities as you play. Stadium will also let you pick between the traditional first-person mode or a new third-person mode, which should make it easier to aim some of the wilder abilities you can unlock during a match. The cherry on top to all these changes are new quality of life features Blizzard plans to add this year, like the ability to ban specific heroes from a match, and vote on maps you want to play. Of course, there are also two new heroes in the works: Freja, “a former search and rescue operative turned bounty hunter” with an explosive crossbow who will be playable in a free trial weekend during Season 15 before joining the game in Season 16, and a hero currently being called “Aqua” who will land in Season 18 and can control water.
