High-energy cosmic neutrino detected under Mediterranean Sea
High-energy cosmic neutrino detected under Mediterranean Sea
By Will Dunham
(Reuters) – Using an observatory under construction deep beneath the Mediterranean Sea near Sicily, scientists have detected a ghostly subatomic particle called a neutrino boasting record-breaking energy in another important step toward understanding some of the universe’s most cataclysmic events.
The researchers, part of the KM3NeT (Cubic Kilometre Neutrino Telescope) Collaboration, believe the neutrino came from beyond the Milky Way galaxy. They identified 12 supermassive ****** holes actively guzzling surrounding matter at the center of distant galaxies as possible origination points, though the neutrino may have arisen from some other source.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
KM3NeT comprises two large neutrino detectors at the bottom of the Mediterranean. One called ARCA – 3,450 meters (2.1 miles) deep near Sicily – is designed to find high-energy neutrinos. One called ORCA – 2,450 meters (1.5 miles) deep near Provence, France – is designed to detect low-energy neutrinos.
The newly described “ultra-high energy” neutrino, detected by ARCA in February 2023, was measured at about 120 quadrillion electronvolts, a unit of energy.
It was 30 times more energetic than any other neutrino detected to date, a quadrillion times more energetic than particles of light called photons and 10,000 times more energetic than particles made by the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva.
“It’s in a completely unexplored region of energy,” said physicist Paschal Coyle of the Marseille Particle Physics Centre (CPPM) in France, one of the leaders of the research published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.
“The energy of this neutrino is exceptional,” added physicist Aart Heijboer of the Nikhef National Institute for Subatomic Physics in the Netherlands, another of the researchers.
Neutrinos offer scientists a different way to study the cosmos, not based on electromagnetic radiation – light. Many aspects of the universe are indecipherable using light alone.
Neutrinos are electrically neutral, undisturbed by even the strongest magnetic field, and rarely interact with matter. As neutrinos travel through space, they pass unimpeded through matter – stars, planets or anything else.
That makes them “cosmic messengers” because scientists can trace them back to their source, either within the Milky Way or across galaxies, and thus learn about some of the most energetic processes in the cosmos.
“Neutrinos are ghost particles. They travel through walls, all the way through the Earth, and all the way from the edge of the universe,” Coyle said. “Neutrinos have zero charge, zero size, almost zero mass and almost zero interaction. They are the closest thing to nothing one can imagine, but nevertheless they are key to fully understanding the universe.”
Other high-energy cosmic messengers zipping through space are not as reliable. For instance, the path of cosmic rays gets bent by magnetic fields, so they cannot be traced back to their place of origination.
Detecting neutrinos is not simple, requiring large observatories located deep underwater or in ice. These mediums offer an expansive and transparent volume where a passing neutrino may interact with a particle, producing a flash of light called Cherenkov radiation.
The researchers concluded that the one spotted at ARCA – which was a type of neutrino called a muon – was of cosmic origin based on its horizontal trajectory and the fact that it had traversed through about 140 km (87 miles) of rock and seawater before reaching the detector.
The KM3NeT detectors are still under construction and have not yet reached their full capabilities.
Neutrinos are produced through various astrophysical processes at various energy levels. For instance, low-energy neutrinos are born in nuclear fusion processes inside stars.
High-energy neutrinos arise from particle collisions occurring in violent events such as a ****** hole greedily eating infalling matter or bursts of gamma rays during the explosive deaths of stars. They also can be produced by interactions between high-energy cosmic rays and the universe’s background radiation.
The study of neutrinos is still in its formative stages.
“So why it matters? It’s basically just trying to understand what is going on in the cosmos,” Heijboer said.

Days Gone Remastered Rides For PS5 This Year
Days Gone Remastered Rides For PS5 This Year
Sony Bend’s open-world action-horror game Days Gone is getting the PS5 remaster treatment that the publisher has used with several of its first-party games this generation. Days Gone Remastered was previously rumored to exist in 2024, but now it’s official, and players who own the PS4 version can upgrade to the PS5 version for $10.
Days Gone’s PS5 features include several upgrades, such as improved draw distance, stronger graphical fidelity, better lighting and shadows, 3D audio (so you can hear those hordes of Freakers better, no doubt), and VRR support on compatible screens.
Naturally, it will also enjoy DualSense support, with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers meant to provide a more immersive sense of the “Broken Road” on your bike, as well as capturing weather effects like rain and thunder. Another staple of PS5 remasters, Days Gone will also include new accessibility features, including “Contrast mode, Game Speed, UI Narration, Collectible Audio Cues, Controller Remapping, Field of View slider, and more.”
New modes are coming to the PS5 version, too. Horde Assault is billed as a “survival arcade mode” that sounds a bit like Call of Duty Zombies, with an emphasis on lasting as long as you can rather than reaching a definitive end point. A new permadeath mode will also give hardcore players a one-life-to-live stipulation for the most authentic apocalyptic experience. There will also be a new speedrun mode that pushes you to beat the story as quickly as you can.
Photo mode is also being overhauled to throw in more features such as time-of-day settings, new lighting rigs, and new logo options.
Days Gone Remastered arrives on April 25 for PS5, with the game’s new content mentioned above coming to the PC version as the Broken Road DLC bundle. This was one of many announcements during the February 2025 State of Play presentation.

Trump’s Resignation Program for Federal Workers Can Move Forward, Judge Rules
Trump’s Resignation Program for Federal Workers Can Move Forward, Judge Rules
A federal judge said Wednesday that the Trump administration’s deferred resignation program for federal workers could move forward, allowing the White House to advance a key part of its plan to reduce the federal work force through mass payouts.
Judge George A. O’Toole Jr., a U.S. District Court judge in the District of Massachusetts, did not weigh in on the program’s legality. The judge instead ruled that the plaintiffs, which included unions representing federal workers, were not directly affected by the incentive plan, known as “Fork in the Road,” and lacked standing to challenge it.
“The unions do not have the required direct stake in the Fork directive,” Judge O’Toole wrote, adding that they were “challenging a policy that affects others, specifically executive branch employees.”
“This is not sufficient” for standing, he wrote in his five-page decision.
The unions challenging the plan had sought a temporary restraining order to block the plan from going forward. In his ruling, Judge O’Toole added that precedent from previous cases showed that the court did not have subject matter jurisdiction to consider the unions’ claims.
The decision was a win for the Trump administration, which has been stymied by a series of other court rulings in recent days that have slowed efforts to freeze federal spending and put significant numbers of employees on leave.
Earlier this week, the federal government informed its work force that the deadline had been extended indefinitely, and was still signing up workers to participate while the judge deliberated the case. At least 65,000 workers applied for the program.
The administration immediately moved on Wednesday to close the program to new applicants, as it had sought with a previous deadline of last Thursday.
The suit to stop the program, filed by the liberal nonprofit group Democracy Forward as well as three government unions — the American Federation of Government Employees, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and the National Association of Government Employees — argued that the offer was unlawful, in part because Congress had not already appropriated the funds needed to compensate the workers who took up the offer.
In a statement, the leader of A.F.G.E., the largest federal employee union, noted that the ruling did not address the legality of the resignation program and said that the union’s lawyers were considering their next steps.
“Today’s ruling is a setback in the fight for dignity and fairness for public servants,” said Everett Kelley, the union’s president.
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, who has led an aggressive attempt to shrink and reshape federal government institutions with the approval of President Trump, had pushed employees to take the resignation incentive offer, which promised pay through September.
Critics had argued that the offer was not trustworthy, in particular because Congress had not funded any part of the federal government past March 14.
About 65,000 government employees had volunteered for the payout program as of last Thursday, the initial deadline to sign up, representing less than 3 percent of the civilian federal work force.
That is well short of the stated goal of the Trump administration to drastically reduce the size of the federal work force. In any given year, more than 5 percent of the federal work force will either retire or quit their jobs, according to data from the federal government.
Still, the mass resignation of tens of thousands of government employees could have far-reaching effects on American society.
Routine activities like traveling, renewing passports or filing for a tax return could be delayed or disrupted. The operation of national parks and museums, and the administration of benefits like Social Security, Medicare, veterans’ care and food stamps could also be affected. Regulators and inspectors for food, water, drugs and workplace safety could also leave the government.
Michael C. Bender and Madeleine Ngo contributed reporting.

Judge clears way for Trump’s plan to downsize federal workforce with deferred resignation program
Judge clears way for Trump’s plan to downsize federal workforce with deferred resignation program
Demonstrators rally outside the U.S. Treasury Department after it was reported billionaire Elon Musk has gained access to Treasury’s federal payments system that sends out more than $6 trillion per year in payments on behalf of federal agencies and contains the personal information of millions of Americans, in Washington, U.S., Feb. 4, 2025.
Kent Nishimura | Reuters
A federal judge on Wednesday cleared the way for President Donald Trump ‘s plan to downsize the federal workforce with a deferred resignation program.
It was a significant legal victory for the Republican president after a string of courtroom setbacks.
“This goes to show that lawfare will not ultimately prevail over the will of 77 million Americans who supported President Trump and his priorities,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
There was no immediate response from labor unions that had sued over Trump’s plan.
American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) National President Everett Kelley said in a statement issued after the ruling that the union’s lawyers are evaluating the decision and assessing next steps.
“Today’s ruling is a setback in the fight for dignity and fairness for public servants,” Kelley said. “But it’s not the end of that fight. Importantly, this decision did not address the underlying lawfulness of the program.”
The union continues to maintain that it’s ******** to force American citizens to make a decision, in a few short days, without adequate information, about “whether to uproot their families and leave their careers for what amounts to an unfunded IOU from Elon Musk,” the statement said.
U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr. in Boston found that the unions didn’t have legal standing to challenge the program, commonly described as a buyout. O’Toole was nominated by former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat.
Trump wants to use financial incentives to encourage government employees to quit. According to the White House, tens of thousands of workers have taken the government up on its offer.
The deferred resignation program has been spearheaded by Elon Musk, who is serving as Trump’s top adviser for reducing federal spending. Under the plan, employees can stop working and get paid until Sept. 30.
Labor unions argued the plan is ******** and asked for O’Toole to keep it on hold and prevent the Office of Personnel Management, or OPM, from soliciting more workers to sign up.
A Justice Department lawyer has called the plan a “humane off ramp” for federal employees who may have structured their lives around working remotely and have been ordered to return to government offices.

A new Dynasty Warriors game just surprise launched during Sony’s State of Play
A new Dynasty Warriors game just surprise launched during Sony’s State of Play
A brand new entry in the Warriors franchise got a shadow drop during the PlayStation State of Play. Warriors: Abyss is a roguelike twist on the classic Musou series you can purchase right now on PlayStation 4 and 5.
Just a month after Dynasty Warriors: Origins released, Koei Tecmo is already launching another Warriors game, although this time it is transforming the genre into an isometric roguelike. The trailer showed off multiple characters fighting through endless masses of enemies with wide sweeping skills, magic, and attacks you would expect from the main series, only looking more like a Diablo game. Players will choose a character to battle through enemies within hell itself featuring randomly generated stages and items. In addition to the standard soldier units, demonic monsters and massive bosses will challenge you as you dive deeper into the layers of the underworld. Over 100 characters will be playable, but you will also recruit other heroes to join your team to summon into battle with up to 7 being active at once.
Please enable Javascript to view this content
Additional characters will be released after launch, the first of which will be from the Jin kingdom of Dynasty Warriors. Koei Tecmo teases that future batches of characters will include characters from outside the Warriors series.
The trailer promises “16,000,000” battle styles, which likely indicates the number of combinations possible between characters, party compositions, items, and other randomized elements within runs.
Warriors: Abyss is available in the Hack ‘n’ Dash Edition which includes 57 costumes and 3,000 Karma Embers or the Hack ‘n’ Dash Ultimate Edition that adds in 75 Dynasty Warriors classic costumes, 68 Samurai Warriors classic costumes, and 5,000 Karma Embers. Anyone who purchases the game before March 14 will also be eligible to get the Dynasty Warriors Costume Set for free by claiming it from the main menu.
Warriors: Abyss is available now on PS4 and PS5.

Ex-GTA Producer’s MindsEye Brings Sci-Fi Action To PS5 This Summer
Ex-GTA Producer’s MindsEye Brings Sci-Fi Action To PS5 This Summer
After working on every GTA title since Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001, producer and game designer Leslie Benzies left Rockstar Games after the release of Grand Theft Auto 5. Over a decade later, Benzies is set to release his new game, MindsEye, later this year as seen during Sony’s State of Play. And if the new trailer is any indication, MindsEye is going to be an action game with some sci-fi touches.
MindsEye puts players in control of Jacob Diaz, an ex-soldier who has a neural implant called The MindsEye placed in his head even after his military service has ended. The MindsEye is also giving Jacob visions of a covert mission he can’t quite remember that may have changed his life for the worse. But as Jacob goes looking for answers, he finds himself beset by an unknown faction that’s out to silence him with extreme prejudice.
As seen in the accompanying gameplay trailer below, MindsEye takes place from a third-person perspective, and GTA fans will probably be right at home as Jacob uses any means necessary to take out his foes. He can even get in cars and engage in shootouts from behind the wheel. Jacob also has a companion drone that he can use to scout enemy positions and give himself an edge in combat.
Benzies’ company, Build A Rocket Boy, developed MindsEye, which will be published by IOI Partners. The game is set to hit PlayStation 5 this summer. For the rest of the State of Play reveals, check out the gallery below.

A bald eagle that was spotted Tuesday suffering from neurological deficits in a Massachusetts town had to be euthanized after it tested positive for the bird flu.
A video shared with the Raptor Tales Rescue of Shrewsbury showed the adult eagle making sudden and frequent head movements, which sparked “serious concern for avian influenza.”
Raptor Tales Rescue said the eagle was taken to a wildlife clinic, where it tested positive and was euthanized due to the disease.
“We are incredibly saddened by this loss of life and want to thank the finder for being so caring and proactive,” Raptor Tales Rescue wrote in a Facebook.
State officials recently warned the public to avoid handling birds and other wildlife because suspected avian flu cases are now “widespread” in Massachusetts.
The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 virus, which rarely infects humans, is suspected to be the cause of death in cases of both wild and domestic birds in several Massachusetts municipalities.
Two geese in Norfolk tested positive for bird flu, officials said last week.
And in Plymouth, officials said bird flu is the suspected cause of over 60 dead geese, swans, and other wildlife found in that coastal town.
Over in Brockton, officials recently announced the closure of D.W. Field Park due to a potential outbreak of bird flu.
Raptors, waterfowl, and other aquatic birds are most at risk for infection, although any bird species should be considered susceptible.

***** shows trailer for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, out later this year
***** has confirmed the full title for its upcoming Shinobi game, and announced its release date.
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance will be released on August 29, with players able to pre-order the game today for a 10% discount.
The game will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One and Steam on that day, with Switch and physical versions following later.
“Play as Joe Musashi in a new 2D action platformer that marks the return of the iconic Shinobi franchise,” *****‘s description of the game reads. “Battle challenging enemies and epic bosses in a uniquely hand-drawn world.”
The game is a collaboration between ***** of Japan and Lizardcube, the French studio that co-developed Streets of Rage 4.
“Artistically, Shinobi is a continuation of our creative work on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Streets of Rage 4,” creative director Ben Fiquet said in an interview on the PlayStation Blog.
“We have always been deeply attached to traditional art and animation, which we believe reflects perfectly in 2D gameplay.
“Our influences range from French comics to Japanese anime while trying to keep that Mega Drive / Genesis visual aesthetic, which we feel players may remember fondly, too.”
Although it’s the 13th game in the Shinobi series, Fiquet said Art of Vengeance is mainly inspired by the Mega Drive / Genesis games The Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III.
“You have the special powers, moves – even some of the enemies, stages and bosses capture the essence of past Shinobi games,” he said. “The Bamboo Forest stage, for example, returns in this title, so players familiar with Shinobi will surely feel the nostalgia.”

Abdoulaye Doucoure: Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk accuses Everton midfielder of provocation in derby clash
Abdoulaye Doucoure: Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk accuses Everton midfielder of provocation in derby clash
Following Tarkowski’s late equaliser with a superb finish, Doucoure went over towards the away fans and was caught on television cameras making a shushing gesture.
He was confronted by Liverpool substitute Jones, before a large tussle between both sets of players broke out, while a bottle was seen to be thrown at the group.
It was eventually broken up by stewards and, afterwards, referee Oliver showed second yellow cards to both Doucoure and Jones.
The drama was not over, however, as Liverpool boss Slot and his assistant Hulshoff were shown straight red cards after trying to make their feelings known to the officials.
Slot had been seen moments after Tarkowski’s equalising gesticulating to suggest there had been a foul in the build-up to the goal.
Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman said it was “silly” of Doucoure to antagonise the Liverpool fans.
“Abdoulaye Doucoure had 37,000 of his own fans to go and celebrate in front of,” he told **** Sports.
“To go and antagonise the Liverpool fans was a silly decision. It was only going to end one way.”
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand added: “Going against opposition fans I don’t think is wrong. The difference is when it is a local derby, you don’t like them but there is a respect and you know there is a torch paper that will be lit.
“Other games you can do that because it is a bit of banter. Sometimes it is emotions. Mario Balotelli did this with the Man Utd fans once and I was incensed and we got into a melee so I can understand why Curtis Jones did what he did.”
Meanwhile, Everton boss David Moyes was left frustrated that he will lose Doucoure to suspension for Saturday’s game at Crystal Palace.
“I didn’t see it from where I was,” said the Scot, whose side moved level on points with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham and 10 clear of the relegation zone.
“I have had a chance to see it and I’m disappointed because Doucoure played really well and I’m going to now lose him because he’s got a second yellow card which turned into a red.
“The emotions were running high here all night, the stadium was at fever pitch. It was mayhem. You could see what it meant to supporters at the end of the game, the crowd was rocking.
“It was one of the big nights.”

Metal Gear Solid: Delta won’t keep you waiting much longer
Metal Gear Solid: Delta won’t keep you waiting much longer
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater – Release Date Trailer | PS5 Games
After a small snafu where the trailer leaked early, we got the official reveal of the Metal Gear Solid: Delta release date trailer during the February State of Play event. We can revisit the earliest entry in the MGS timeline on August 28, 2025.
Metal Gear Solid: Delta is a remake of the 2004 title Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater which is the earliest game in the MGS timeline. The trailer shows more gameplay of Naked Snake infiltrating and sneaking through environments, and cutscenes with iconic characters like Ocelot, The Boss, and The End, all rendered in beautiful Unreal Engine 5 graphics. The trailer ends with a tease of an optional mode from Snake Eater called Snake Vs. Monkey where Snake would need to track down a group of monkeys from Ape Escape in the jungle. It is unclear if this mode will be available in all versions of the game or if it will be exclusive to PlayStation since it uses one of Sony’s IPs.
Please enable Javascript to view this content
Besides the graphical facelift, Delta is staying true to the original in every other way possible. All the original voice lines are being used for this entry, so fans will be able to hear David Hater, Josh Keaton, Lori Alan, and the rest of the original cast exactly as it was in 2004. There are also two control and visual options available to make the game look and play more like the original or include more modern conveniences.
Delta was revealed during a 2023 PlayStation showcase alongside the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 which included the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid games up through MGS 3. It was heavily suggested that the game was targeting a release window of 2024, however, it was never explicitly stated and we now know the game will arrive this August.
Metal Gear Solid: Delta will arrive on August 28, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Crossbenchers to fight to overturn electoral reform cannonballing in ********* parliament
Crossbenchers to fight to overturn electoral reform cannonballing in ********* parliament
Tensions are high on what could be the last sitting day of this Parliament, after Labor and the Coalition teamed up to pass through a suite of electoral reforms that have angered the crossbench.
A number of independents, who could become critical if either Prime Minister Anthony Albanese or Opposition Leader Peter Dutton fall short of forming a majority government, have threatened to make their support contingent on a review of the “dirty deal” that passed on Thursday morning.
While the reforms decrease the disclosure threshold to $5000 from $16,900, will enforce real-time disclosure and cap individual donors to $50,000 per candidate or party, crossbenchers say the candidate spending cap of $800,000 will lock out future independents from taking on the major parties.
Parties will meanwhile have a national cap of $90 million, with the changes to come into effect for the 2028 election.
Independent Mackellar MP Sophie Scamps said today would “go down in history as the day the two major parties undermined our democracy to entrench their own power”.
“Having a vibrant crossbench is fundamental to holding Governments to account, and they have just passed laws by gagging debate to ensure that that accountability may not be there in the future,” she said.
“Australians should be very worried about our democracy.”
Outgoing North Sydney MP Kylea Tink said voters had a chance to send the major parties a strong message at this election.
“Australians, stand up for your vote. Vote the way that will bring truth and integrity back to this place, and right now your vote is wasted if you cast it with either the Labor Party or the Liberal-Nationals.”
Special Minister of State Don Farrell has rejected the suggestion the changes would make it harder for independents – which prompted a terse corridor confrontation with independent Zali Steggall.
The Warringah MP, who ousted Tony Abbott in 2019, called out the Minister for his “hubris” in front of the cameras.
She subsequently said she would make winding back the laws a condition of her support should she hold the balance of power in a hung parliament.
Ms Steggall wants an independent review of the new election financing laws by a panel of High Court judges and ethical experts – not the parliamentary committee that typically would examine such things.
But she says that’s just one part of her conditions.
“Trust is also an element of support,” she said.
“There is something just deeply wrong with finding out terms of amended legislation through the media that dramatically impacts participation in democracy… We can disagree on outcomes, on amounts or maybe provisions, but I at least request the respect of being briefed and told where negotiations have landed before reading about it in the press.”
Independent senator David Pocock – who the Government have often relied on in this term of Parliament – also backed a fresh, detailed examination of the new laws after the election.
He criticised the Government for only circulating the amendments in the Senate in the midst of debate, and hit out at Senator Farrell’s reluctance to answer question as a show of disrespect.
Senator Pocock said there had been an “uptick in small donations” to independents overnight.
“Lots of people (are) saying this is not what we want in our politics,” he said.
“No one’s arguing that we want big money in politics, but the argument all along has been let’s create a level playing field. You have to take into account the advantages of being an incumbent.
“This isn’t about me. It probably suits me… but this is about other communities who want someone other than the major parties in there, representing them, fighting for them and being accountable to them.”
Clark MP Andrew Wilkie, who has served as an independent since 2010 and was crucial to the former Labor Government, said his support in the next Parliament would be contingent on prioritising integrity and transparency.
“But as far as mu negotiations with the future Government, unlike what I did in 2010, if I am re-elected at the forthcoming federal election then this time around, I will not enter into a formal deal for my support for supply and confidence,” he said.
“Instead, I will approach every single vote on its merit, including possibly on day one, a vote of confidence in the Government.”
Two-term Indi MP Helen Haines said she would never “sell her vote”.
“Signing deals with either major party takes away the most useful tool that I have, and that’s to sit down with whatever minister is trying to pursue a piece of legislation, and make it better,” she said.

The prospect of further cuts in the base rate by the Bank of England has given mortgage providers confidence to reduce their own rates.
But the attention-grabbing sub-4% deals by Santander and Barclays will not be available to all borrowers, and may come with a hefty fee.
The return of such deals might prompt other lenders to follow suit after a ******* of tepid competition.
Mortgage deals with interest rates below 4% have not been seen since November.
Across the whole market the average rate on a two-year fixed deal is 5.48%. The typical rate on five-year deals is 5.29%, according to latest figures from Moneyfacts.
“Borrowers have been crying out for better mortgage rates and we are starting to see them,” said Aaron Strutt, of broker Trinity Financial.
“If your mortgage is coming up for renewal soon and you have already selected a new deal, it is a good time to review it and potentially swap to a better rate.”
Time to decide
Some tracker and variable rate mortgages move fairly closely in line with the Bank’s base rate, which was cut to 4.5% a week ago. However, more than eight in 10 mortgage customers have fixed-rate deals.
The interest rate on this kind of mortgage does not change until the deal expires, usually after two or five years, and a new one is chosen to replace it.
About 800,000 fixed-rate mortgages, currently with an interest rate of 3% or below, are expected to expire every year, on average, until the end of 2027.
That means a higher monthly bill for many homeowners on their next renewal, but there are signs that the rate they could pay is on its way down.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said the interest-rate setting committee expected to be able to cut rates further “but we will have to judge meeting by meeting, how far and how fast”.
This will affect savers who are seeing lower returns, but could bring better news for borrowers. The Bank’s next rates decision is on 20 March.
The markets and lenders are expecting more base rate cuts this year, seen through so-called swap rates. So, rates for new fixed mortgage deals are predicted to fall – especially as mortgage providers tend to move as a pack.
“It was only a matter of time for lenders to bring back sub-4% mortgages,” said Rachel Springall, from financial information service Moneyfacts.
“This is a positive injection to the mortgage market and when a big lender makes such a move, it can prompt its peers to follow suit with cuts of their own.
“The millions of mortgage borrowers looking to refinance this year need some good news.”
Read the small print
Eligible borrowers for the sub-4% rates will need a 40% deposit, which will shut off these deals to many borrowers, especially some first-time buyers.
They may also have a relatively large fee, so borrowers will need to check whether the overall value works for them.
More demand for homes from buyers could be generated if mortgage rates fall for a prolonged *******.
In its latest survey, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said that housing market activity was expected to pick up over the coming months following a flat start to the year.
Ways to make your mortgage more affordableMake overpayments. If you still have some time on a low fixed-rate deal, you might be able to pay more now to save later.Move to an interest-only mortgage. It can keep your monthly payments affordable although you won’t be paying off the debt accrued when purchasing your house.Extend the life of your mortgage. The typical mortgage term is 25 years, but 30 and even 40-year terms are now available.

Borderlands 4 gets a new trailer and a September release date
Borderlands 4 gets a new trailer and a September release date
You won’t have to wait very long to get your hands on Borderlands 4. During Sony’s February 2025 State of Play, developer Gearbox Software announced the next installment in the looter shooter series will release on September 23.
Initially revealed during Gamescom 2024 last August, Borderlands 4 will be the first mainline entry in the series since 2019’s Borderlands 3. But we didn’t just get a release date. Gearbox also showed off a new launch date trailer that gives us a bit more insight into gameplay than what was previously shown at the 2024 Game Awards. It’s about what you’d expect, meaning there is focus on fast gunplay, cool weapons, and the signature cell-shaded visual style. A PlayStation Blog post also teases Borderlands 4 as Gearbox’s “most ambitious game to date.”
If the trailer wasn’t quite enough, and you find yourself itching for more information, then good news. Gearbox also announced that this Spring a special State of Play dedicated to the looter shooter will give us a deep dive into just how ambitious it is.
One thing to look out for when that State of Play does drop is the improved movement of Borderlands 4. The PlayStation blog post mentions that movement will be a big focus of this entry, with the inclusion of double jumping, gliding, dodging, grappling, and more. All of this will likely play into the more seamless design that Gearbox CEO ****** Pitchford teased in an interview with GameSpot following The Game Awards.

Everton 2-2 Liverpool: Toffees ensure Goodison Park gets one great last Merseyside derby act
Everton 2-2 Liverpool: Toffees ensure Goodison Park gets one great last Merseyside derby act
Before kick-off, the sounds of tribalism emerged from Everton strongholds The Blue House and The Winslow Hotel – standing directly opposite the Main Stand on Goodison Road, with its Howard Kendall Bar.
These are the places so many Everton supporters will miss. Not as much as Goodison Park itself but the time-honoured rituals that take place after weaving their way through the terraced houses that landlock the stadium in Winslow Street, Eton Street, Neston Street and Andrew Street.
Little did they realise what this emotionally-charged night held in store for them as Everton, rejuvenated under Moyes, stood toe-to-toe with Liverpool, fighting to the end to ensure the final tally of 120 derbies at Goodison Park ended with 41 wins a piece.
Blue smoke and the smell of cordite filled the air as Everton’s team coach arrived, the area around the players entrance packed with supporters.
It was spine-tingling as the newer Everton tradition of an air-raid siren blared before Z-Cars, the soundtrack to the start of every Goodison Park game, rang out.
The Gwladys Street End, the heartbeat of Everton’s support, was covered in flags before kick-off, including banners reading “We Built This City – 1878”, “Our Motto Is Our Standard Nil Satis Nisi Optimum” and one dedicated to Goodison with a Beatles twist declaring “There Are Places I’ll Remember 1892-2025”.
It was poignant, as Everton now have only six games left at the place they have long called home.
The reborn Beto gave Everton the lead after 11 minutes, but a sometimes unsettled and off-colour Liverpool looked to have secured the three points through Alex Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, before the drama of Tarkowski’s equaliser in the closing seconds.
And the ugly brawl that followed.
The strains of Elton John’s I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues rang around an exultant Goodison Park after the final whistle.
And there, back on familiar ground in the Goodison Park technical area, was Moyes – prowling in familiar fashion as his Everton fought, showing his desire still burns as he celebrated joyously and drove his team on.
Moyes is also remembered on Goodison Park’s exterior, football’s cyclical nature illustrated by his image on The Everton Timeline that snakes its way around the stadium, commemorating moments of significance in the club’s history.
Opposite The Blue Dragon fish bar and The Goodison Cafe – all part of the sights, sounds and smells of Goodison Park – is the large photograph of a 38-year-old, red-headed David Moyes holding up an Everton scarf after his appointment as manager in March 2002.
The hair is now white as Moyes, 23 years on and soaked in a lifetime of managerial experience, is back in charge of Everton for his 26th Merseyside derby. He did not want to leave Goodison Park on a losing note against Liverpool, Everton deserving their share of the points.
“I think it was hugely important that Evertonians get to finish at their stadium as best as they can,” he said. “I just feel the support in here was unbelievable, it was incredible support and I think it was fitting they got an end like they did.”
This night belonged mostly to Everton, who fought with character and steel to get a draw, with Liverpool frustrated even though they still lead the Premier League by seven points.
Most of all, this night belonged to Goodison Park.

Treasury Wine Estates flags lower earnings as drinkers shy away from cheap wine
Treasury Wine Estates flags lower earnings as drinkers shy away from cheap wine
Treasury Wine Estates has reported a 50 per cent earnings plunge for its cheap wine division as consumer demand for its budget plonk — starting at just $6 a bottle — softens.
Earnings for Treasury Premium Brands fell 49.9 per cent to $22.9 million in the first half of the financial year, which the group said reflected softness in consumer demand for wine at lower price points.
The division comprises the Snoop Dogg-backed 19 Crimes, Squealing Pig, Pepperjack and Wolf Blass labels.
TWE now expects full-year earnings to hit about $780m, which is at the lower end of previous guidance of between $780m and $810m, driven primarily by reduced expectations for the premium brands business.
But growing sales for the high-end Penfolds wines and the recently acquired Californian wine operation DAOU Vineyards countered the weakness in Premium Brands.
TWE on Thursday reported a 19.6 per cent increase in half-year revenue to $1.57 billion as net profit lifted 32.5 per cent to $220.9m. It declared an interim dividend of 20¢ a share, up from 17¢ a year earlier.

Penfolds’ earnings grew 33.9 per cent to $250.2m, bolstered by the re-entry into China after onerous tariffs of as much as 200 per cent on bottled *********** wine exports were removed.
Treasury Americas reported a 70 per cent increase in earnings to $155.3m, driven by DAOU, which was acquired in December 2023.
“We are extremely pleased to have successfully re-established the Penfolds *********** country of origin portfolio in China, with positive consumer and customer sentiment and key performance signals very clear,” said chief executive Timothy Ford said.
“The progress we have made integrating DAOU and Treasury Americas to create the leading supplier of luxury wine in the US market is also pleasing and we look forward to further capitalising on this opportunity in the year ahead.”
The company also revealed it would abandon plans to divest its lower-end labels Wolf Blass, Yellowglen, Lindeman’s and Blossom Hill.
“TWE has concluded that the offers received for these brands did not represent compelling value and therefore their retention is the best course of action,” the company said.

Borderlands 4 release date confirmed
Borderlands 4 release date confirmed
The release date for Borderlands 4 has been confirmed.
The shooter RPG will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 23, Gearbox Software says.
A new trailer debuted during PlayStation‘s latest State of Play presentation, which shows the game in action.
Gearbox also announced that a special State of Play presentation dedicated solely to Borderlands 4 will be coming this Spring, though no specific date was confirmed.
“Borderlands 4 is our most ambitious game to date, giving you more looting and shooting mayhem than ever before,” Gearbox chief creative officer ****** Varnell wrote on the official PlayStation Blog.
“Our team has been kicking so much ****, and we cannot wait to share it with you.”
Varnell also stated that players will be able to “move across the Borderlands like never before” with “double jumping, gliding, dodging, fixed-point grappling and more, dealing death from every direction”.
In December, the game’s narrative director Sam Winkler said the game will cut back on toilet humour and won’t rely on meme culture for its jokes.
In response to a follower on X, Winkler noted that while he was “not at liberty to talk much about the content of Borderlands 4,” he “remains firm in [his] criticism of Borderlands 3‘s overabundance of toilet humor”.
“I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears,” he added. “Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A and a fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder.”

Unions sue Trump, fearing mass firings of federal employees
Unions sue Trump, fearing mass firings of federal employees
Local labor organizers celebrate at a United Auto Workers vote watch party on April 19, 2024 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. With over 51% of workers voting yes the UAW won the right to form a union at the plant.

Five unions sued the Trump administration on Wednesday, seeking to block what they called the possible mass firing of hundreds of thousands of federal employees who resist pressure to accept buyouts.
In a complaint filed in Washington, D.C. federal court, the unions accused the White House and others in the Executive Branch of undermining Congress’ role in creating and funding a federal workforce, violating separation of powers principles.
The plaintiffs include the United Auto Workers, the National Treasury Employees Union, the National Federation of Federal Employees, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
Ten defendants were named, including Trump, the heads of agencies, the Department of Defense, Internal Revenue Service and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the acting director of the Office of Personnel Management.
Last week, some unions sued the Trump administration to block the buyouts. On Monday, U.S. District Judge George O’Toole in Boston kept in place a block of the buyout plan for federal employees, as he considers whether to impose it for a longer ******* of time.
The decision prevents Trump’s administration from implementing the buyout plan for now, giving a temporary victory to labor unions that have sued to stop it entirely.
On Tuesday, meanwhile, Trump ordered U.S. agencies to work closely with billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to identify federal employees who could be laid off.

New Jersey man sues safari tour operator after rampaging hippo killed his wife in Africa
New Jersey man sues safari tour operator after rampaging hippo killed his wife in Africa
A New Jersey man whose wife was killed by a hippo during an African safari has filed a lawsuit alleging that their tour operator was negligent in failing to keep her safe.
Craig Manders says in the suit that he witnessed the horrifying death of his wife Lisa, 70, who was killed in Zambia last year during a safari organized by a Connecticut company, African Portfolio.
“Had we understood the dangers posed by the hippopotamus, we never would have agreed to be in such close contact while on foot,” Manders said in a statement released by his attorneys, Paul Slager and Nicole Coates.
“The idea that we were unwittingly exposed to such an extreme danger, a danger made even worse by our tour guides leaving Lisa alone on foot with nothing between her and such a deadly animal, is nothing short of astonishing.”
Lisa and Craig Manders during their trip to Zambia.
Rod Gould, a lawyer for African Portfolio, described the incident as a terrible but “really unusual” tragedy. He said the company arranges tours and works with the most reputable safari lodges in Africa but is not responsible for what goes on during the trips.
“My client is a tour operator. It organizes tours,” Gould said. “A trip, for example, might include airfare. We’re not responsible if the airline loses luggage.”
In the suit filed in Stamford Superior Court, Manders says he and his wife left the U.S. on May 31, 2024, for a 10-day safari in Zambia, a country in southern Africa.
Five days later, the couple went on a “bush walk” with guides who led them to a riverbank where a lone hippopotamus was resting in the water, the suit says. Known for being fiercely territorial and aggressive, hippos are among the most dangerous animals on Earth.
Despite their size – adult males typically weigh over 3,000 pounds – hippos can run fast over short distances, reaching speeds upward of 20 mph.
The guides “knew or should have known that the close presence of the wild hippopotamus to participants in the Bush Walk posed an immediate and extreme danger, due to the known tendencies of hippopotami to be highly unpredictable, territorial, and aggressive in such circumstances,” the lawsuit says.
But the guides, including at least one armed with a rifle, left the area, the suit says, leaving the Manders and others in their group to observe the hippo without any protection.
Then, without warning, the hippo lifted its head and charged out of the water toward Lisa Manders, according to the lawsuit. The massive animal caught up with Manders and attacked her, the suit says.
“Although Lisa Manders attempted to flee, she was unable to escape and the hippopotamus violently attacked her, grabbing her by its mouth, lifting her off the ground, shaking her entire body, and crushing her head and body with its bite,” the suit says.
Lisa Manders during her trip to Zambia.
Lisa Manders suffered “catastrophic injuries” and died shortly after, according to the lawsuit, which noted that her husband witnessed the attack.
A mother of three from Cranford, Manders worked in the financial industry for more than 40 years. “Lisa was the best mother and wife anyone could ever hope for,” her husband said. “Her violent death is a devastating loss not only for our family, but for our community.”
The lawsuit does not identify where in Zambia the attack occurred, but the country’s minister of tourism was quoted in a local news report lamenting the death of an American tourist killed by a hippo at the Lower Zambezi National Park on June 5, 2024.
The government’s “thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased, even as investigations continue on the incident,” the tourism minister, Rodney Sikumba, said in a statement, according to Radio Christian Voice.
Craig Manders’ attorneys described the incident as an awful tragedy that was “entirely preventable.”
“Interacting with the natural world in the wilderness can be an incredibly rich experience,” said Slager, of Slager Madry LLC. “But wilderness guides and tour operators like African Portfolio carry the responsibility to ensure basic safety precautions are taken to ensure customers visiting the African wilderness are not unnecessarily exposed to extreme dangers.”
