  1. Saros is the next game from Housemarque, coming to PS5 in 2026 Saros is the next game from Housemarque, coming to PS5 in 2026 To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Other than a Days Gone remaster, Sony’s first State of Play stream of the year was fairly light on first-party games. At least that was the case until the very end of the showcase. The company announced the long-awaited next game from Returnal developer Housemarque. The third-person action title is called Saros, and it stars the always-delightful Rahul Kohli. The actor plays Arjun Devraj, “a powerful Soltari Enforcer searching for answers on a lost off-world colony,” per the trailer’s YouTube description. The clip shows Arjun waking up on a beach with a gun by his side. “Every time the sun dies, madness reigns,” he says as an ominous eclipse occurs. Moments later, a giant being with eight arms and a broken, pointy headpiece emerges from the depths. The creature summons ****** of fire in its hands as Arjun readies himself to battle it. Housemarque/PlayStation Studios Housemarque says Saros is a new game, but it’s one that builds on the roguelite foundations of Returnal and its repeatable runs — just in case Arjun saying “After every death, I always come back stronger” in the trailer wasn’t clear enough. In this game, your resources and progression persist after each run. You’ll have an “evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades” to help upgrade your loadout, though as in Returnal, the world will change after every death. One other major difference between Saros and Housemarque’s last game is that Arjun isn’t alone on this planet. Details about other characters in the ensemble cast, the story and gameplay will be revealed later. Sony liked Returnal enough to buy Housemarque and add the developer to its stable of PlayStation Studios, so it’ll likely have high hopes for this one. Saros is slated to arrive on PS5 in 2026. 2. Google Gemini adds its personal AI researcher to your iPhone – if you have the right subscription Google Gemini adds its personal AI researcher to your iPhone – if you have the right subscription Google Gemini has added its Deep Research AI model to iPhones Deep Research searches the web, compiles, and reports back to Gemini Advanced subscribers The information is refined and organized into results viewable on Google Docs iPhone users who love Google’s Gemini AI assistant have a new tool to help them condense information from the internet. The tech giant has added its Deep Research feature to iOS devices, at least if you’re a Gemini Advanced subscriber. Deep Research debuted on Gemini’s web portal in December and rolled out to Android users earlier this month. Deep Research is an AI-powered tool for compiling information. Essentially, it takes the classic Google search collecting of links and extends it several steps to read what’s at those links and organize what it finds into something useful. It’s the first “agentic” feature in Gemini, meaning the AI is more proactive and doesn’t just answer questions; it carries out an entire research project. If you do subscribe to Gemini Advanced and have the app on your iPhone, you can switch to Deep Research by picking it from the model list. Select “1.5 Pro with Deep Research” near the newer experimental 2.0 Flash model. Then, just ask Gemini a research question, something big and messy and complicated if you want to test its limits. Gemini will respond with a step-by-step plan it will undertake on your behalf. You can tweak the approach if you don’t like it, deleting parts or adjusting the focus, and then tap the “start research” button. Gemini then heads off on a digital scavenger hunt, digging through sources, running multiple searches, and refining its findings in real-time. Don’t expect instant answers. It can take between five and ten minutes to complete, longer if it’s an especially difficult topic. You don’t have to babysit it, though. Gemini will send you a notification when the work is done, and you can check your chat history later to review the results. Once it’s ready, you’ll get a structured report, complete with sections, tables if necessary, and a full list of sources. And if you want to make it look even more official, you can export it directly to Google Docs. Of course, Google isn’t letting you run wild with infinite research requests. There are daily limits, and the app will politely remind you how many you have left, just in case you were planning to outsource your entire workload to AI. Right now, Deep Research runs on Gemini 1.5 Pro, but Google has hinted that it will eventually move to the more powerful 2.0 Pro once that model exits its experimental phase. Ads AI The launch of Deep Research on iPhones matters for more than just access reasons. The pitch to iOS users signals how aggressively Google is leaning into Gemini for all kinds of productivity demands. Unlike a standard chatbot response, which can sometimes feel like a slightly smarter autocomplete, Deep Research attempts to simulate how a human researcher breaks down a topic, refines their findings, and presents something meaningful. It’s also a direct response to how rival AI companies are pursuing similar goals. OpenAI’s version of this kind of feature even shares the Deep Research Name. But, with OpenAI, Meta, and Apple working on more advanced AI-driven assistants, Google is clearly betting that features like Deep Research will make Gemini a must-have. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Deep Research is, in some ways, just another tool in Google’s AI arsenal, but it’s a powerful one. It’s easy to see the appeal to people who feel like they are drowning in information when online. It may not remake the experience of looking things up online, but it could set Gemini up as the crowning jewel for future digital research projects. 3. Meet the Monster Stock That Continues to Crush the Market Meet the Monster Stock That Continues to Crush the Market Every growth investor dreams of coming across the next Nvidia or Palantir stock. These stocks aren’t just beating the market; they’re absolutely crushing it, and investors are hungry for the next artificial intelligence (AI) stock. But it’s not only AI stocks that are crushing the market right now. Cava Group stock is another relatively new stock that burst onto the scene and continues to trounce the market. CAVA Total Return Level data by YCharts Let’s meet Cava, see why investors love it, and whether or not it makes sense to join in the excitement. Cava went public in 2023 in a year when there was a dearth of initial public offering (IPO) activity, at least in comparison to 2021, when the space trend pushed up the IPO to a record 1,035. So it wasn’t surprising that investors got excited about what could be the next big thing. And so far, Cava is proving them right. It’s growing by leaps and bounds, becoming profitable, and has robust future opportunities. What else could an investor ask for? For the most recently reported quarter, which was the 2024 third quarter, revenue increased 39% year over year. Most impressively, comparable sales were up 18%, which was a feat in the high-inflation, low-activity environment. It really speaks to customer satisfaction and bodes well for Cava’s future and expansion opportunities. Because growth has been so strong, Cava has already reached profitability at scale, and it was profitable from its first quarter as a public company. In the 2024 third quarter, average unit volume rose from $2.6 million to $2.8 million, and net income increased from $6.8 million to $18 million year over year. Free cash flow was $23.4 million. On top of its excellent performance, it has robust opportunities. It only operates 352 stores right now, but it envisions having 1,000 in operation by 2030. Tripling store count should create incredible revenue-generating potential. Management raised its 2024 full-year guidance after the third-quarter report and expects to open about 57 stores for the full year. To reach 1,000 stores over the next five years, it will have to accelerate openings. Cava is going through an exciting expansion and offers incredible potential. There’s one little problem, though, which is that with all of the market enthusiasm, Cava stock has become incredibly expensive. At the current price, Cava stock trades at a forward, one-year price-to-earnings ratio of 159. That’s a wildly high valuation. There are risks beyond the valuation, but the valuation heightens these risks even more. Because so many expectations are built into the price, if the company doesn’t meet them, it could face a dramatic fall. Cava is still young, and the path from 350 to 1,000 restaurants isn’t a simple one. To meet that goal, it will have to open up stores at a much higher rate and prove successful in varied regions. It’s also facing competition from other new cast-casual chains like SweetGreen and old favorites like Chipotle ******** Grill. Chipotle recently invested in a chain called Brassica that competes directly with Cava’s Mediterranean concept. Story Continues I don’t mean to sound pessimistic, and to be honest, I think Cava has a solid future ahead of it. I’m concerned, however, about the near-term upside. Wall Street is on my side here; the average analyst consensus price is only 8% higher than today, and more than half of covering analysts say to hold at this price. Five years from now, I expect there to be a lot of Cava restaurants across the U.S. and the company to be reporting solid growth. However, I would wait for a more attractive entry point. Cava stock is crushing the market right now, but I’d be hesitant to say it could keep that up long term at the current price. 4. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Release Date Confirmed With State Of Play Trailer Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Release Date Confirmed With State Of Play Trailer After it was leaked a few days earlier than intended, Konami officially confirmed during the February State of Play that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will launch on August 28. This remake of the 2004 stealth-action game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater also debuted a new trailer during State of Play that recreated several pivotal moments from the trailer before closing with a glimpse of its crossover with Ape Escape. Although the story and voice overs remain the same, there have been a number of new additions for this remake. There will be an option for a third-person view, as well as the traditional MGS top-down viewpoint. Players will also be able to change their camo on the fly with a quick-select button, which may help them remain undetected during tense situations. Most of the game’s Easter eggs have also been incorporated into the remake, with new additions called GA-KO, which will be hidden throughout the game. The GA-KO may not be easy to find, because their cameo makes them blend into the background. As for Ape Escape’s Pipo Monkeys, players can try their hand at the Snake vs. Monkey special game mode. Poor Snake has to capture these cheeky beasts, and they seem to love mocking him. There’s also an Xbox version of the trailer that shows Bomberman instead of Ape Escape’s Pipo Monkeys. More details about this mode will be released at a later date. In the meantime, Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will have PS5 Pro support. Players who preorder Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will get a special White Tuxedo outfit for Snake. There will also be a Digital Deluxe Edition, which is slated to include the Sneaking DLC Pack, and other additional content. Players who choose the Digital Deluxe Edition will also have an exclusive 48-hour early access window to the game. First revealed during the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Konami has shared very few details on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater since then. What we do know is that the game will launch for PC and Xbox Series X|S consoles as well and legendary game director Hideo Kojima isn’t involved with its development. The game is also making use of the original voice-acting files, and thanks to a recent interview, it was finally revealed that Jodi Benson–Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid–voiced the character Eva all those years ago. Konami has been very busy lately with several video game projects, and while the publisher doesn’t have a second remake of the original Metal Gear Solid in development currently, it has revisited the franchise with the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection. A second volume is also in development, but it doesn’t have a release date yet. 6. Millennial CEO shares what helped him raise millions for his startup Millennial CEO shares what helped him raise millions for his startup Desmond Lim, co-founder and CEO of Workstream. Courtesy of Desmond Lim Desmond Lim is no stranger to hard work. At the age of seven, he fell in love with basketball, but when his family couldn’t afford to buy him his own ball, he came up with the money by himself. “Money was always tight,” Lim told CNBC Make It. “My parents are both hourly workers. My dad’s a driver. My mom’s a cleaner.” “I chose a sport that is free, so I can play any day that I wanted,” said Lim. “I saved up for 60 days not eating lunch, to [have] enough money to buy the ball. Then, I held on to that orange rubber ball and played it for five years, every day, until it was bald.” That attitude has served him well in life. Today, the 39-year-old is the co-founder and CEO of Workstream, a human resources, payroll and hiring platform made for the hourly workforce. The company has raised about $120 million to date. Humble beginnings Lim was born and raised in Singapore and was the first in his family to attend university. From selling eggs at the local market to driving trucks, Lim says, most of his extended family, including his parents, were — and still are — hourly workers. “[My parents] both only finished fourth grade,” he said. “My dad is up at 5 a.m. every morning, and he gets home by seven, and he works six and a half days per week. He barely stops for lunch.” Desmond Lim, co-founder and CEO of Workstream, with his parents. Courtesy of Desmond Lim Lim saw the grit and work ethic that his parents had and applied those characteristics to his own life. In high school, not only was he a top student, but he also led his school’s basketball team, as captain, to win a national competition. “When we won the High School Championship, I was the captain that carried our school flag and ran around the whole school as the school cheered for our victory … I think that moment changed my life,” he said. “Sports taught me that you need time, patience and a team of people to build something great.” Lim was also selected to play basketball professionally for the Singapore National Youth Team while in high school. It quickly became clear that he had the chops to get into a top university, but his family didn’t have the means to support his education. Desmond Lim with his basketball team in Singapore. Courtesy of Desmond Lim “My mom told me: ‘I cannot pay for your college. You shouldn’t go to college. You should go and work,'” said Lim. “That nudged me to figure out how to go to college on my own.'” Ultimately, Lim’s entrepreneurial journey was largely born out of a need. He said he started businesses since he was young in order to be able to afford school fees. On top of focusing on his studies and basketball, Lim started his own tutoring business in high school. Within two years, he says, that business brought in about $100,000 in revenue, which was enough to pay for his university education. That tutoring company became just the first of several businesses that Lim began. Similarly, while studying at Singapore Management University, Lim set his sights on a new goal — he wanted to move to the United States to get a master’s degree. To save money, he bootstrapped and started another business — a Thai food restaurant — while still working on completing his degree. After graduating from university in 2010, Lim worked in investment banking for several years before moving to the U.S. for his master’s degree at Harvard University in July 2013. ‘I was so hungry’ While at Harvard, Lim zeroed in on establishing his own tech startup. “I was so hungry when I was at Harvard, I felt like I was drinking from a firehose. Typical people take four classes — I was doing seven classes every term,” he said. During his first year at Harvard, Lim cold emailed about 50 startups in the San Francisco Bay Area, hoping to gain some startup experience. That winter break, he flew to California, where he slept on a friend’s couch and worked at an education tech startup for free. Desmond Lim with his Harvard classmates during orientation week. Courtesy of Demond Lim “And the following summer, I again worked for free for WeChat … before they converted me into a full-time role. So, I was just so hungry to learn about everything, about startups and company building,” said Lim. In 2016, Lim sat in on a friend’s class at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business called “Startup Garage.” “It’s the same class that companies like DoorDash and SoFi came out of,” he said. “Our job was to go out to talk to business owners, so we talked to tens, if not hundreds of business owners around Palo Alto, and we heard about pain points.” One business they spoke with was Coupa Cafe, a family-owned coffee shop chain with outlets around Stanford and Palo Alto. It was during this conversation that Lim discovered the idea for Workstream. He found that the company didn’t have the right tools to efficiently manage their hourly workforce. They were using seven different tools, including Google Drive and just writing things down manually with pen and paper, said Lim. “I [thought] this is so much work. There must be something that we can do better for them,” he said. “So I think that was the moment, combined with my experience running my own restaurant, coupled with my parents being both hourly folks.” Desmond Lim with his co-founders, Lei Xu and Max Wang. Courtesy of Desmond Lim After completing his graduate program at Harvard, Lim moved to the Bay Area in 2016 and co-founded Workstream in September 2017 with Lei Xu and Max Wang. Three short months later on Jan. 4, 2018, Workstream had its first paying customer — Coupa Cafe paid Lim and his co-founders $100. Building Workstream The early days of Workstream involved lots of door-knocking. “It was fun … [I was] selling door to door, with some help from Max and Lei. So we were just three immigrants in the streets of Palo Alto trying to knock on doors and talk to people. It was kind of funny [and] we learned so much,” said Lim. Desmond Lim with Workstream’s first investor, Eric Yuan. Courtesy of Desmond Lim The company’s first investment was a $25,000 check written by Eric Yuan, the founder and CEO of Zoom. “I first reached out to Eric about 9 to 10 years ago the first year that I went out to The Valley … I think it was a cold email [and] I said ‘Hey, can I meet you for lunch just to learn from you as a fellow immigrant founder?'” said Lim. Yuan said yes, and they proceeded to have a great one hour conversation at lunch. From there, the two stayed friends for about a decade, and when Lim reached out to get funding for his company, the Zoom founder quickly became Workstream’s first backer. “He didn’t even ask me what I was going to build. I said I was going to build a platform for the hourly space, and he was like: ‘Okay, I believe in you,'” said Lim. “Since then, [Yuan] has actually doubled down in every single round. He has now invested more than seven figures in the company over the past seven years.” Desmond Lim with Workstream team members in 2024. Courtesy of Desmond Lim Today, Workstream is an all-in-one HR and payroll software built for hourly companies. “Our company’s purpose is: ‘deskless deserves better.’ We believe that the hourly economy is very underserved. There’s not enough good software, both built for hourly companies, but also for many of these hourly workers,” Lim told CNBC Make It. “There are many tools out there for payroll, but it’s all built for people who work in tech, who work in office, who [are] desktop first,” said Lim. “So what we have built is a mobile-first, AI-driven software to help [hourly companies] do their payroll, HR onboarding, all in the same place, to help them to save money and time.” Workstream’s customers include brands such as Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts. The company’s backers include Gold House, Peter Thiel and Ken Howery’s Founders Fund, Jay-Z and DoorDash’s Tony Xu. What’s ‘more crucial’ than hard work? Lim had a strong work ethic early on. He was inspired watching his parents and family members hustle as hourly workers to earn a living, but there is one trait that he says that can be even more important. “Truly try to explore and find out what you really want to do. Sometimes I feel like making the right choice is even more crucial than trying to work very hard,” he said. “I think one thing I did when I was younger was I talked to many people,” said Lim. “I was really curious, and I would write to professors at school, I’d write to founders. I was just having informational chats with people that I looked up to for 20 minutes, for 10 minutes, for lunch.” “I was just very hungry to learn from people, and I think that really helped me shape how I think and who I’ve become today,” he said. 7. ‘He knew that he had to change things at this club’: Jarome Luai’s journey from ‘immature larrikin’ to architect of change at the Tigers ‘He knew that he had to change things at this club’: Jarome Luai’s journey from ‘immature larrikin’ to architect of change at the Tigers Api Koroisau remembers Jarome Luai as an “immature larrikin” when they first met five years ago, but he could always tell that his good friend would develop into the leader he is now and the main reason why Wests Tigers fans are confident the tough times are over. Luai and Sunia Turuva are a couple of the key signings for the Tigers in 2025, with the former Panthers stars bringing experience, confidence and a winning edge that has been missing at a club that has claimed three-straight wooden spoons. While Luai is no longer the chief energy officer he was at the Panthers, he’s earnt his new role as co-captain in a sign Benji Marshall and club bosses see him as the man who can reshape their future. The four-time premiership winner captained Samoa during their tour of England last year and has developed into a tremendous leader on and off the field, which is slightly different to Koroisau’s first memories with Luai at Penrith. Camera IconJarome Luai has changed immensely since the first time he met Api Koroisau. Zak Simmonds Credit: News Corp Australia “He’s changed so much since when I first met him back in 2020,” the Tigers hooker said. “When I first met him, he was really young and absolutely loving life and really immature, which is a good thing because I’m also immature. “His footy IQ and the way he’s able to convey his ideas or what he thinks we should do is incredible. “The way he walked into the place, he knew that he had to change things at this club. He’s come in and he hasn’t held back. Everyone looks up to him and loves him. “I think everyone needs to get that early immaturity out of their system. “He was always smart. He never came off as smart because he was always mucking around, but if you ever got him one-on-one, you noticed he was quite intelligent, articulate and you could see that he was going to go into that leadership direction. “To see the way he’s done it (has been great). He hasn’t been shy about anything. If he needs to say something then he will, and that takes real leadership and courage.” Camera IconLuai has handed off the boombox to Sunia Turuva. NRL Images Credit: The Daily Telegraph There’s a different feel at the Tigers this pre-season, with no outlandish predictions coming from the players who are purely focused on ticking off daily targets. The mood around the club hasn’t been great over the years, with players leaving, coaches moving on and wins hard to come by, but the energy feels a lot different thanks to Luai and Turuva who have been just as loud as they were in Penrith. “The vibes have been great,” Koroisau said. “A couple of those boys that have come in are really high energy and they’re a bunch of larrikins, so it’s been great having them. “They’ve been just as loud as they were at Penrith. Turuva is leading the charge. He walks around with that boombox all day, and then Jarome comes in on the back of him. “How you start your sessions at training is really important, and when the energy is a bit low, sometimes training can start that way as well. “But (it’s not like that with those two guys) and the vibe they’ve created helps build connections off the field as well. The laughs you create off the field definitely translates to on the field.” Source link #knew #change #club #Jarome #Luais #journey #immature #larrikin #architect #change #Tigers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Exclusive New Images of Tides of Annihilation Revealed Today Exclusive New Images of Tides of Annihilation Revealed Today Eclipse Glow Studio, an all-new company headquartered in China, has just revealed Tides of Annihilation during the State of Play showcase. The global unveiling of Tides of Annihilation came in the form of an action-packed trailer, but I’m here to expand on that reveal with exclusive, first-look images of the game. I was fortunate enough to sit down with Eclipse Glow Studio at Gamescom in 2024, effectively advising them on the future of their game and offering a ‘Western’ perspective on their portfolio. Months later, Tides of Annihilation has finally been revealed, and it looks stellar. A Twisted World The gist of Tides of Annihilation is that players control the sole survivor of a shattered humanity in an alternate universe representation of London. The city (and the world around it) has been torn to shreds by an otherworldly invasion, and the core of the game revolves around utilising ancient, Arthurian powers to put those invaders to the sword. In a statement, Kun Fu, the lead producer at Eclipse Glow Studios, said about the recent reveal: Debuting Tides of Annihilation at Sony State of Play is an incredible, humbling accomplishment for the Eclipse Glow development team. It’s also just the beginning. We’ve created a world that reimagines Arthurian Legend where themes of courage, loyalty, and heroism intertwine with an epic story set in a strange-yet-familiar setting that will test the mettle of true gamers and push the genre forward. I’ve been lucky enough to secure four exclusive, first-look images of Tides of Annihilation, here for your perusal: In Tides of Annihilation, which is a narrative-driven, single-player title, gamers assume control of Gwendolyn. She’s a powerful protagonist with an ethereal connection to ‘spectral knights’, and as the game unravels, she’ll go toe-to-toe with ‘hordes of enemies’ and ‘unforgettable bosses’. Players worldwide will be invited to explore a twisted rendition of London, which features many of the city’s major landmarks – but in this world, every back alley and ancient building is laced with danger. Here’s the trailer for Tides of Annihilation: If I’m being honest, at first blush, this game looks like a stunning cross between Stellar Blade and Elden Ring. Tides of Annihilation will be released on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. Do you think it looks like your kind of game? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum. 13. Cyclone Zelia to reach category 5 system on Thursday before crossing coast, bringing destructive winds Cyclone Zelia to reach category 5 system on Thursday before crossing coast, bringing destructive winds Cyclone Zelia is expected to reach a category 5 system on Thursday, potentially bringing flash flooding and destructive winds up to 290km/h if it crosses the coast. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the already category 4 system will intensify to a category 5 cyclone on Thursday before slowing moving to the north of Port Hedland. Destructive wind gusts up to 160km/h could reach Port Hedland and the areas between Whim Creek and Wallal Downs on Thursday. The Bureau said even more destructive winds of up to 290 km/h would likely be recorded near the centre of the cyclone. While strong winds are forecast to reach communities from as early as Thursday night, the Bureau said they were more likely on Friday as Cyclone Zelia nears the coast. “The very destructive inner core of the cyclone will most likely cross the coast between Whim Creek and DeGrey including Port Hedland on Friday afternoon or night, although a later crossing further west can not be ruled out,” an update by the Bureau said. “Heavy rainfall is expected on the coast during the next couple of days and falls will be locally intense near the centre of the cyclone as it crosses the coast.” People in the Eight Mile Beach through to Whim Creek and Inland to Marble Bar are bounded by a cyclone watch and act alert, with the Bureau stating there is a possible threat to lives and home. Residents are urged to make final preparations to their properties. “If you live in a caravan, older home or a home that has not been maintained, you should go to your nearest evacuation centre or safer place,” the alert said. Camera IconA Cyclone Watch and Act is in place for Eighty Mile Beach to Whim Creek and inland to Marble Bar. Credit: EmergencyWA An evacuation centre has opened at JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub in South Hedland. People are urge to prepare an emergency kit, which includes enough canned food and water for five to seven days. As of 5am on Thursday, the system was estimated to be about 10km north west of Port Hedland and 230 km north east of Karratha. It is moving about 6km/h west, with potential strong winds delayed until Friday if the system continues to move in that direction. Great Northern Highway between Buttweld Road, Port Hedland and Roebuck Plains Roadhouse will close from 10.30am onwards. Ripon Hills Road and Marble Bar Road will also shut, with the community warned some community could be isolated. Tides are expected to rise significantly as a result of the cyclone, with damaging waves and possible flooding for low-lying areas close to shore. Bureau of Meteorology WA manager James Ashley said on Wednesday more than 500mm of rain was possible. He emphasised that the exact path of the cyclone was unpredictable. “We’re expecting erratic motion and there’s low confidence on the future path of the system,” he said. “Coastal parts could see elevated wind speeds for a prolonged ******* because of that slow motion of the system. “If the system crosses the coast as a severe tropical system, we could see wind gusts in excess of 200km/h but regardless of intensity, we expect this system to produce very heavy rainfall and areas close to the path could see in excess of 500 millimetres over the course of this event.” Camera IconResidents have been warned to brace for Tropical Cyclone Zelia. Credit: Bureau of Meteorology Department of Fire and Emergency Services commissioner Darren Klemm said additional supplies were being sent to pharmacies and grocery stores. Triple road train permits has been established for extra supply trucks to get into the North West. More than 40 personnel have been deployed to support existing resources, with more expected to arrive later in the week. “We’re also bringing in additional capabilities like flood boats into the Pilbara over the course of (Tuesday) and (Wednesday) and (Thursday), where we also have additional aircraft on standby in the Pilbara for incident response efforts. “Two rotary wing aircraft are based in Newman and one fixed wing aircraft is based in Karratha. We’ve also established a rescue helicopter capable of winching based in Broome.” The community is urged to keep up to date through Emergency WA, which can be downloaded as an app. Source link #Cyclone #Zelia #reach #category #system #Thursday #crossing #coast #bringing #destructive #winds Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  14. Saros, the next game from Housemarque, is out next year Saros, the next game from Housemarque, is out next year Saros, the next game from Housemarque, has been announced. The game stars Rahul Kohli and will continue Returnal‘s theme of sci-fi action, but the games don’t appear to be connected narratively. A trailer for the game can be viewed below. Developer Housemarque said it will show the first gameplay from Saros later this year. “Saros is an action game with the haunting story of a lost off-world colony on Carcosa under an ominous eclipse,” reads a post on the PlayStation Blog from director Gregory Louden. “You play as Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer who will stop at nothing to find who he is looking for. Our goal is to create an emotional and powerful character study that explores the cost it takes to create a new future. “Arjun is performed by Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher). Rahul is truly bringing Arjun to life in a stunning performance. He has been a brilliant collaborator to tell our story and champion for the game. He is also not alone on Carcosa, and we will reveal more of our fantastic ensemble npc cast and story information ahead.” The PlayStation Blog also seems to confirm that the game won’t be a roguelike. “A key gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable. After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to “come back stronger” to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa.” Source link #Saros #game #Housemarque #year Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  15. How the ******* of a Memphis college student led to the arrest of six Tennessee cops How the ******* of a Memphis college student led to the arrest of six Tennessee cops MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Six Tennessee law enforcement officers are facing charges in connection with the violent arrest of a ******* suspect following a cross-county chase. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested six officers involved in the arrest of Jackson Hopper, a suspect charged with killing a college student in a Memphis park in October. The arrests follow an investigation into allegations of excessive use of force. The six officers arrested are from three different law enforcement agencies in West Tennessee. Here’s what to know about the suspect, the officers and the arrests. Why was there a search for Jackson Hopper? On Oct. 19, 2024, Ellie Young, a 22 year old student from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, was shot and killed after a walk in support of the American ******* Society took place at Shelby Farms Park. Witnesses told police a male driver fired two shots into the back of Young’s Jeep Wrangler in the parking lot while she was inside. “The victim came out of the Jeep Wrangler and the male suspect fired at least one more shot into the victim as she lay on the ground,” the affidavit said. The suspect then fled the scene. After a lengthy chase, Hopper, a recent ex-boyfriend of Young’s, was arrested and charged with first-degree *******. In December, Hopper was indicted and remains in custody. Young’s family has also sued Hopper and his mother to prevent them from hiding assets to avoid a potential wrongful death payout. What happened during Jackson Hopper’s arrest? The arrest sparked an investigation into allegations that the arresting officers used excessive force in detaining Hopper. During the investigation, TBI agents learned an officer with the Mason Police Department initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle matching the description of one driven by Hopper provided by Shelby County law enforcement. The driver refused to stop, a pursuit began and deputies from multiple agencies joined the chase through three counties before Hopper crashed on Highway 51 in Dyer County. A video of the arrest shows a group of armed law enforcement around Hopper’s vehicle, which was flipped over. An officer demanded that Hopper show his hands. Moments later, he was pulled out of the vehicle and officers appeared to strike him while he was on the ground. Toward the end of the video, Hopper is seen being escorted and placed in the back seat of a patrol car. The incident left him with ****** eyes. What are officers accused of in Jackson Hopper arrest? On Feb. 10, a Dyer County Grand Jury returned indictments charging the officers with a range of offenses including official misconduct, official oppression, assault and tampering with evidence. All six officers turned themselves in and were each released on a $25,000 bond. Bryan Lane, 37, Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office: One count each of Official Misconduct, Official Oppression, and Assault. Zachary Antle, 32, Mason Police Department: One count each of Official Misconduct, Official Oppression, and Assault. Dakota Wilkerson, 27, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office: One count each of Official Misconduct, Official Oppression, and Assault. Samuel Chastain, 35, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office: One count each of Official Misconduct, Official Oppression, and Assault. Benjamin Stanifer, 30, Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office: One count of Tampering with Evidence. Matthew Lawler, born 29, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office: One count of Tampering with Evidence. Antle, Chastain, Lane and Wilkerson are accused of assaulting, unlawful mistreating and causing bodily harm to Hopper. The indictment further alleges that Stanifer and Lawler altered or concealed their body-worn cameras on the day of the arrest “with the intent to impair its availability as evidence in the investigation.” What are police saying? Multiple Tennessee sheriffs expressed shock and dismay about the arrests. Tipton County Sheriff Shannon Beasley said Hopper tried to run over officers during the high-speed pursuit and drove into opposing traffic toward innocent civilians. “I am in disbelief and saddened to hear this news,” Beasley said in a statement. “These men acted courageously and without hesitation or reservation, put themselves in harms way in the pursuit of justice while pursuing a violent, ******* suspect.” Sheriff Jeff Box in Dyer County echoed that sentiment in a statement, saying, “I am saddened today by the indictment of six officers who heroically assisted my deputies in the capture of a man who had just murdered his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight in Shelby County,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Brian Kelley said officers were disciplined after an internal investigation determined they violated department policy, but no evidence warranting criminal prosecution was found. Kelley said he was “filled with a flood of emotions ranging from confusion to hurt.” “Until proven otherwise, I support all the officers who put their lives on the line against an impossible situation and ask everyone not to jump to judgment based on 60 seconds’ worth of video footage,” Kelley said. 17. Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) – Jim Cramer: “This Is GameStop” Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR) – Jim Cramer: “This Is GameStop” We recently published a list of 10 Stocks on Jim Cramer’s Radar. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) stands against other stocks on Jim Cramer’s radar. Jim Cramer, the host of Mad Money, recently pointed out a significant gap in the American education system, emphasizing that financial literacy is rarely taught in schools, from middle school all the way through college. According to Cramer, managing personal finances is one of the most essential skills, especially when it comes to preparing for retirement, hence he laid out a few lessons for his viewers. “So I’m betting most of you, even if you don’t own individual stocks, still have some money in a 401k plan… They’re offered by your employer and they’re among the greatest tax-deferred investment vehicles out there along with the IRA.” READ ALSO 17 Best Stocks for Kids According to Jim Cramer and 13 Stocks Jim Cramer Recently Talked About However, Cramer was quick to clarify that he does not view the 401k as a perfect solution for everyone. While it does offer valuable tax benefits, including tax-deferred growth, it can also be somewhat of a mixed bag. Explaining what 401k is, he said: “In plain English, that means you pay no taxes on what you put in and then you never pay a penny of capital gains taxes on the profits you make within your 401k, which allows your gains to compound year after year, decade after decade, totally tax free until you decide to start making withdrawals.” While this can be a great advantage, Cramer cautioned that there are instances where other retirement options might be more beneficial. He pointed out that in some cases, an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) might be a better option than a 401k, as it offers the same tax-deferred advantages. He also advised that when changing jobs, it is a smart move to roll over your 401k into an IRA. Cramer advised that individuals should do this whenever they switch employers or find themselves between jobs, ensuring that their retirement savings stay under their control. Cramer recommended opting for a self-directed IRA through a full-service discount brokerage like Fidelity as this gives individuals more direct oversight of their money. He added: “The bottom line on retirement investing: If the company you work for matches your 401k contributions up to a certain point, take them for all they’re worth. But other than that, an IRA is the superior way to go, especially if your 401k plan doesn’t give you any good investment options.” Story Continues For this article, we compiled a list of 10 stocks that were discussed by Jim Cramer during the episode of Mad Money aired on January 24. We listed the stocks in ascending order of their hedge fund sentiment as of the third quarter, which was taken from Insider Monkey’s database of 900 hedge funds. The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. 19. Stock market today: Live updates Stock market today: Live updates Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Feb. 4, 2025. NYSE S&P 500 futures are near flat Wednesday night as traders analyzed the latest corporate earnings reports while awaiting more inflation stats. Futures tied to the broad index ticked up 0.1%, while Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.3%. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 47 points, or 0.1%. Reddit shares sank more than 16% in extended trading as user figures underwhelmed Wall Street. On the other hand, Dutch Bros surged more than 23% after the coffee shop chain reported stronger-than-expected earnings and same-store sales that surpassed expectations. That action follows a mixed day on Wall Street. The Dow fell more than 200 points and the S&P 500 shed 0.3% after the closely followed consumer price index reading showed inflation came in hotter than economists anticipated in January. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, meanwhile, ended marginally above its flatline, buoyed by advances of more than 4% and 2% in Palantir and Tesla, respectively. “This is a tough inflation report to get while the White House is looking at further tariffs with consumer inflation expectations jumping higher,” said Scott Helfstein, head of investment strategy at Global X. “While this does not blunt our optimism yet on both the economy and stocks, it does bear watching closely.” Investors will watch Thursday for the latest data from the producer price index, which measures wholesale inflation. They’ll also monitor weekly jobless claims data due out in the morning. Earnings season continues, with Airbnb, Coinbase and Palo Alto Networks among the companies expected to report after Thursday’s closing bell. Of the more than 69% of S&P 500-listed firms that have already posted results, nearly 77% have surpassed Wall Street expectations, according to FactSet. 21. Trump’s plan to scrap the penny spikes interest for coin collectors Trump’s plan to scrap the penny spikes interest for coin collectors Can a penny saved finally be truly worth it? Collectors are asking that question this week after President Trump ordered the U.S. Treasury Department to stop minting the penny. “For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” Mr. Trump wrote in a post Sunday night on Truth Social. “I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.” Every penny costs 3.7 cents to manufacture and the U.S. Treasury lost $85.3 million in 2024 producing them, the U.S. Mint reported. Congress sets currency specifications, so it’s unclear whether Mr. Trump has the power to eliminate the penny, but the president might be able to stop the Treasury from minting them. This is key, collectors say, to possibly driving up the price of 2025 pennies and rare pennies currently in circulation. “As an avid collector of coins, the coin collecting community is excited as the discontinuation of the penny is a historic event and it brings a renewed interest in rare and valuable editions,” avid coin collector Scott Evans told CBS News. He pointed to the rise in interest in Canada’s penny after the country discontinued producing the coin in 2012 as a guide for collectors. The Royal ********* Mint removed at least 6 billion pennies in the first three years after stopping production, depositing them at financial institutions and trucking them from coast to coast to recover their valuable copper and zinc, Canada’s government said in a report analyzing its penny removal. Over 3.5 billion ********* pennies were returned in the first year alone, and fewer pennies meant more value for the ones left behind. Some valuable pennies include coins from the 1920s — as most pennies from this decade are hard to find, the ********* Mint said — and from 1936, when only a few “dot” cents are known to exist, making them extremely rare. This is what bullish collectors hope to see if production stops in the U.S. Evans referenced coins with errors on them or coins with significant dates that might see a big increase in value. Before 1982, pennies were made of 95% copper and 5% zinc, and those made of precious metals might see an increase. He pointed to pennies such as the 1943 Copper Penny or the 1982-D Small Date Copper Penny that might jump in price. Rare coin and precious metal collector Jonathan Aminov told CBS News he doesn’t predict a huge jump in price for the penny. “I get calls about pennies all day long,” said Aminov, who owns Big Apple Coins in Manhattan. He said the U.S. won’t see a foreseeable shortage of pennies anytime in the near future because there are too many coins in circulation. Aminov said collectors might see interest in the 2025 penny because that was the year the coin stopped being minted. If 500 million pennies were ordered for the year and 50 million were minted, then those coins are going to be more desirable, he said. He also cautioned that it would be difficult to obtain big prices for pennies as the coin would have to be extremely rare saying, “Pennies are a bit of a longshot.” However, the end of penny production can bring new interest and collectors into a hobby which Aminov says could be a good thing. And once someone is hooked on coin collecting it’s hard to get out, he says. “It’s easy to fall in love with coins,” said Aminov. “And the people who love it really, really love it. They spend obscene amounts of money to purchase their coin and then stare at it for hours in love with its beauty and history.” Cara Tabachnick Cara Tabachnick is a news editor at CBSNews.com. 24. Judge allows Trump’s deferred resignations plan for federal workers to proceed Judge allows Trump’s deferred resignations plan for federal workers to proceed Boston — A federal judge in Massachusetts allowed the Trump administration’s offer of “deferred resignations” to federal workers who voluntarily leave government service to continue and lifted a previous court order pausing the program. Judge George O’Toole, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, ruled Wednesday that the plaintiffs in the case — unions that represent federal employees — lacked standing to bring the case in the first place. He also ruled he did not have the jurisdiction to stop the program from proceeding. The judge initially paused the deadline for workers to accept the offer last week and held a hearing on Monday over whether he should issue a temporary restraining order extending the pause.
