Jailed Cheshire MP faces calls to quit Commons Jailed Cheshire MP faces calls to quit Commons Reuters Mike Amesbury was jailed for 10 weeks on Monday after pleading guilty to assault Disgraced Cheshire MP Mike Amesbury is facing calls to quit the House of Commons after being jailed for 10 weeks for repeatedly punching a man in the street. The Runcorn and Helsby HP, who has been sitting as an Independent since he was suspended by Labour bosses following October’s fracas, admitted assault and was sentenced on Monday. A Labour spokesperson said: “Local residents deserved better and we look forward to them getting the representation they deserve in the future with a new Labour MP.” Conservative co-chairman Nigel Huddleston called on Amesbury to “do the right thing and resign”, adding that constituents “deserve an MP who is able to stand up for them in Parliament”. ‘Recall process’ Reform *** chairman Zia Yusuf also called on the 55-year-old MP to quit immediately, adding: “The great people of Runcorn deserve far better than waiting six weeks for a recall petition to take place.” At an earlier court hearing, Amesbury pleaded guilty to assaulting 45-year-old Paul Fellows. Video footage widely shared on social media showed a confrontation in the Cheshire town of Frodsham in the early hours of 26 October. Sitting at Chester Magistrates’ Court, Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram said a pre-sentence report showed Amesbury’s actions were the result of “anger and loss of emotional control”. ‘Completely unacceptable actions’ Under Parliamentary rules, a Westminster by-election can be forced if 10% of registered voters in a jailed MP’s constituency sign a petition calling for one. The recall process can only be triggered once all avenues of appeal against a custodial sentence have been exhausted. Amesbury won the newly formed seat of Runcorn and Helsby in July’s general election, with a majority of more than 14,000 over Reform ***. He was first elected as MP for Weaver Vale in 2017 and represented the Cheshire constituency before it ceased to exist following last year’s boundary changes. The Labour spokesperson said: “The Labour Party took swift action following Mike Amesbury’s completely unacceptable actions and he is no longer a Labour MP or a member of the Labour Party. “It is right that Mr Amesbury pleaded guilty and has now been sentenced.” Source link #Jailed #Cheshire #faces #calls #quit #Commons Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Ukrainians in the Okanagan mark three years since the start of the war Ukrainians in the Okanagan mark three years since the start of the war Ukrainians gathered outside Kelowna City Hall on Monday, just as they did three years ago. Maksym Maksvchuk, 17, recalled the day he was in military training when Russia launched a full-scale attack against Ukraine in Feb. 2022. “We were hiding in a big basement and we heard the rockets come through, maybe next in the next streets over,” said Maksvchuk. 1:47 Kelowna woman shares story of fleeing Ukraine on anniversary of war Since then, he, just like the more than 8 million other Ukrainians, have fled their home. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Russian leaders, shutting out Ukraine. Tszyu braces for the fight of his life in boxing return Tszyu braces for the fight of his life in boxing return Tim Tszyu concedes he will be fighting to save his career after agreeing to a high-risk showdown with dangerous American Joey Spencer. *********** boxing’s poster boy will make his much-anticipated comeback from two crushing losses in the US last year in a do-or-die super-welterweight battle in Newcastle on April 6. A third straight defeat, following a bloody 12-round split-decision loss to Sebastian Fundora then a brutal beat-down from Bakhram Murtazaliev in October, would be catastrophic for Tszyu’s career. But the former world champion will lay it all on the line against Spencer, who boasts a 19-from-20 record, with 11 of his victories coming via knockouts. “This is the biggest fight of my career. This distinguishes where I come back and where my road will go,” Tszyu said at Tuesday’s announcement. “Look, you’re in this sport to test yourself at all times, so I wanted a tough challenge. “When the fight got offered, it was a no-brainer for me. I knew I didn’t want to take the long road to get back to the top. The shorter it is, the harder the opponents are. “And I knew by taking Joe Spencer, this early, you’re going to go straight back to where you belong. “I’ve got redemption on my mind.” Tszyu’s promoter George Rose from No Limit Boxing said their superstar charge refused to ease his way back with a pushover bout. “Look, a lot of people in their comeback fights, coming back from a loss would choose a dud opponent,” Rose said. “Tim is a guy who wants hard fights every time, and it kills me when he does it. “I’d love to have an easy fight where we can just walk in and he wipes them out. “He probably still will do it anyway, but I’d love to have that thought going into it, not going into a fight where I know that he’s fighting against a guy who’s an absolute killer. “This guy is a two time PBC prospect of the year, a guy who’s only got one little blemish on his career, and a guy who absolutely wants to light up this division and sees this as a huge opportunity for himself.” Known as “The Small Town Soldier”, the 24-year-old Spencer from Michigan is vowing to take everything away from the home favourite in so-called Tszyu-Castle. “This fight is very important for my career, just being on the stage that it is on,” Spencer said. “Tim Tszyu, having the name that he has, a lot of people are going to be tuning in and watching this fight to see if Tim can bounce back. “I believe that I’m going to be an underdog in this fight. But when I come in and do what I need to do to get this win, I’m definitely going be on the map in a way that I haven’t been up to this point. “I believe I can beat him because I believe I’m a superior boxer in all facets. “Absolutely I’m coming to take him out, whether it’s a decision, a stoppage, or a knockout.” Source link #Tszyu #braces #fight #life #boxing #return Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Hollywood’s Ozempic craze has ‘changed the narrative’ of body positivity as celebs are noticeably slimmer than ever Hollywood’s Ozempic craze has ‘changed the narrative’ of body positivity as celebs are noticeably slimmer than ever A body image expert exclusively spoke to Page Six about how trendy weight loss medications like Ozempic have impacted the body positive messaging in Hollywood. Getty Images for Warner Bros. The Ozempic trend sweeping Hollywood is fueling unrealistic body standards once again. The popular diabetes-turned-weight-loss drug (and similar Semaglutide variations) have “definitely changed the narrative” when it comes to body positive messaging in the entertainment industry, Rutgers University psychology professor Dr. Charlotte Markey exclusively told Page Six Monday. “It’s hard not to realize that celebrities like Mindy Kaling, who are very proudly body positive and not especially petite, are slimmed down,” Markey said of the actress, who claimed she lost 40 pounds by changing her eating habits after being accused of using Ozempic in 2022. Dr. Charlotte Markey, author of “The Body Image Book for Girls,” told Page Six that Ozempic has “changed the narrative.” Cambridge University Press “It’s hard not to realize that celebrities like Mindy Kaling, who are very proudly body positive and not especially petite, are slimmed down,” Markey said of the actress, pictured here on the red carpet earlier this month. FilmMagic “We’re getting a lot less messaging about self-acceptance and the fact that people just naturally come in different body sizes and shapes,” Markey added. The ”Body Image Book for Girls” author acknowledged that a person’s desire to be thin is nothing new. However, she believes society had made great strides in overcoming unhealthy beauty standards in recent years — until Ozempic came along. “I think there was real progress [toward body positivity],” she explained. “I think that as people came to understand that restricting what you ate and different fad diets were not going to be effective long-term, people appreciated that self-acceptance was a much more reasonable and healthy option in terms of physical and psychological health.” Kaling (seen here in 2023) has shed more than 40 pounds. Getty Images The actress (seen here in 2013) attributed her weight loss to healthy eating habits. NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images While Ozempic has made weight loss more attainable for celebrities, as well as for the masses, Markey isn’t sure how long the craze will endure. “There’s a lot of attention devoted to weight loss medications and current trends surrounding them,” she said. “I don’t know if that will stick or not, but I think we’re going to hear more and more about undesirable side effects.” While Markey emphasized the importance of body autonomy, she still has concerns, arguing that weight loss drugs are “essentially inducing disordered eating symptoms.” Jessica Simpson (seen here in 2009) has previously struggled with body image issues. Getty Images The singer (pictured here in 2023) said she used diet pills for 20 years. GC Images Kim Kardashian is rumored to have used weight loss drugs to fit into her 2022 Met Gala dress. Getty Images “What weight loss drugs offer is sort of overruling what is normal hunger for a lot of people and making weight loss more possible,” she said. The mental health expert advised consumers of pop culture to be weary of the various measures taken by A-listers to maintain their otherwise unattainable figures. “We have to appreciate that most celebrities have access to resources that we do not, whether that is medications or personal trainers or personal chefs or whatever,” she said. “They are going to get much more hands-on support in achieving whatever look they want to and it’s also nearly a full-time job for many of them.” Demi Moore (seen here in February) revealed that she previously developed an eating disorder after a producer told her to lose weight. Getty Images **** Joe (pictured here in 2008) admitted to using Ozempic to shed the pounds. Getty Images He showed off his slimmed-down figure at the 2023 BET Awards. Getty Images Kathy Bates (seen here in 2005) also turned to a weight loss drug to shed pounds. Getty Images The actress looked fit at a December 2024 event. Getty Images She continued, “Celebrities are paid in part for how they look, so it’s important to keep that perspective and remember there’s something a little bit sad about being caught up in a world that does value your appearance.” Several stars have historically gone to great lengths to lose weight due to the pressures of the industry. In 2020, Jessica Simpson admitted to struggling with a decades-long addiction to diet pills after her record label wanted her to slim down. Earlier this year, Demi Moore also shared that she developed an eating disorder at one point after a producer told her to drop some pounds. Rebel Wilson (seen here in 2017) began her weight loss journey with the help of Ozempic. Getty Images Wilson (pictured here in 2024) admitted to using Ozempic to lose 80 pounds. Dave Benett/Getty Images Meanwhile, rumors have swirled that Kim Kardashian — who once said she would eat poop if it made her look younger — turned to Ozempic to quickly lose weight before her 2022 Met Gala appearance. The theories are just speculation, however, as Kardashian has never publicly admitted to using the weight loss drug. She consistently works out with a personal trainer and follows a healthy diet. Still, media consumers have become ultra-aware that famous faces were suddenly showing up to high-profile events looking more slender than ever with the development of weight loss drugs. Ozempic and other weight loss drugs quickly became the go-to tactic for celebrities like **** Joe, Kathy Bates, Macy Gray, Kelly Clarkson and Rebel Wilson. In February 2024, Oprah Winfrey famously stepped down from her role at WeightWatchers after admitting to using a weight loss drug similar to Ozempic to trim her figure. Kelly Clarkson (seen here in 2022) also turned to a weight loss drug to trim her figure. Getty Images The talk show host lost 60 pounds with the help of the drug. Weiss Eubanks/NBCUniversal via Getty Images Oprah Winfrey (seen here in 2010) revealed that she used a weight loss drug to lose weight. FilmMagic Winfrey (seen here in 2023) stepped down from her position at WeightWatchers after admitting to using an Ozempic-like drug to lose weight. FilmMagic Despite the skinny aesthetic trending in Hollywood once again, Markey believes body image health is a concept that is here to stay. “Body positivity is not over. Most people want to feel positive in existing versions of themselves and body positivity was never about seeking perfection. It was always about psychological health,” she argued. “To say body positivity is over is to say we’ve given up on psychological health, and I don’t think any of us are ready to give that up.” Source link #Hollywoods #Ozempic #craze #changed #narrative #body #positivity #celebs #noticeably #slimmer Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

U.S. says OKX crypto exchange operator enters $505 million guilty plea U.S. says OKX crypto exchange operator enters $505 million guilty plea Thomas Fuller | Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images The operator of the OKX cryptocurrency exchange pleaded guilty on Monday to violating U.S. anti-money laundering laws and will pay nearly $505 million in fines and forfeited fees, the U.S. Department of Justice said. Aux Cayes FinTech Co, a Seychelles-based entity, admitted to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. It entered its plea at a hearing before U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla in Manhattan, who imposed the sentence. OKX is the world’s fourth-ranked cryptocurrency spot exchange based on traffic, liquidity, trading volumes, and confidence in the legitimacy of reported trading volumes, according to CoinMarketCap. Binance, Bybit and Coinbase rank higher. Prosecutors said that from 2018 through early 2024, OKX contravened its own policy against letting people in the United States use its platform, and was used to facilitate more than $5 billion of suspicious transactions and criminal proceeds. OKX let U.S. customers conduct more than $1 trillion of transactions overall, generating hundreds of millions of dollars of fees and profits, and sometimes encouraged customers to skirt the train ban, prosecutors said. One employee allegedly told a customer to say it was based in the United Arab Emirates and to use random numbers for identification purposes. OKX also promoted itself in the United States, including by sponsoring the Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan, prosecutors said. The guilty plea includes an $84.4 million fine plus a $420.3 million forfeiture, and requires OKX to employ through February 2027 an external compliance consultant it hired early last year. OKX received credit for cooperating with the probe. In a statement, Aux Cayes FinTech acknowledged the improper trading by U.S. customers, attributing them to “legacy compliance gaps.” It also said the U.S. customers were a small percentage of its overall customer base, and are no longer on OKX’s platform. US sides with Russia in UN resolutions on invasion of Ukraine US sides with Russia in UN resolutions on invasion of Ukraine The US has twice sided with Russia in votes at the UN to mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the Trump administration’s change of stance on the war. First the two countries opposed a European-drafted resolution condemning Moscow’s actions and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity, which was passed by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Then they backed a US-drafted resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an end to the conflict but containing no criticism of Russia. The Security Council resolution was passed but two key US allies, the *** and France, abstained in the vote after their attempts to amend the wording were vetoed. The competing resolutions were tabled as French President Emmanuel Macron visited President Donald Trump at the White House in an attempt to address their sharp differences over the war. On Thursday, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will likewise visit the new American leader. Trump’s White House has upended the transatlantic alliance, currying favour with Moscow and casting doubt on America’s long-term commitment to European security. That rift was laid bare on the floor of the 193-member UNGA on Monday as US diplomats pushed their limited resolution mourning the loss of life during the “Russia-Ukraine conflict” and calling for a swift end to it. European diplomats tabled a more detailed text, blaming Russia for its full-scale invasion, and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We need to reconfirm that the aggression should be condemned and discredited, not rewarded,” said Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa. UNGA members backed the European resolution by 93 votes but, extraordinarily, the US did not abstain but actually voted against it, along with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 other states, with 65 abstentions. The UNGA also passed the US resolution but only after it was amended to include language supporting Ukraine, which led to the US abstaining. At the much more powerful UN Security Council, which has 15 members, the unamended US resolution was passed by 10 votes, with the ***, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia abstaining. America’s acting envoy to the UN, Dorothy Camille Shea, described the US resolution as a “simple historic statement… that looks forward, not backwards. A resolution focused on one simple idea: ending the war”. Rarely has the US been so at odds with its supposed European allies. Since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago, the Security Council has been deadlocked by the power of Russia, one of its five permanent members, to veto any resolution there. For this reason the UNGA has been the main forum for debating the war but its resolutions are not legally binding for member states, unlike those of the Security Council. S197 Mustang Goes Wrong Way Running From Arkansas Trooper
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
S197 Mustang Goes Wrong Way Running From Arkansas Trooper S197 Mustang Goes Wrong Way Running From Arkansas Trooper Read the full story on The Auto Wire S197 Mustang Goes Wrong Way Running From Arkansas Trooper Surprisingly, we don’t see too many police chases involving suspects in an S197 Mustang. Everyone can theorize about why that might be, but we find it odd since Ford sold plenty of them back in the day. But this pursuit from Arkansas State Police involves one with a suspect who’s willing to drive the wrong way to escape the law. Watch a camouflaged Charger run from ASP and eat it. After a trooper initially pulls over the Mustang, he notices an odor of ********** issuing from the pony car. The driver apparently thought what was coming next would be bad enough it was better to run, because he takes off form the stop in a hurry, as you can see in the dashcam footage. Sadly, in factory spec the S197 just isn’t hot enough to roast an ASP Dodge Charger, but this guy sure tries. But as he weaves through the decent amount of traffic on the highway, the trooper just closes up the gap like that Applebee’s that shut down at your belly-up local mall. That’s when our suspect gets the brilliant idea to whip around on the shoulder and drive in the opposite direction. He goes the wrong way on the highway, with semis, before cutting across an opening in the median cable barrier, going the right direction. But the trooper isn’t far behind. The S197 driver gets off the highway and tries losing the cop on surface streets, but he’s in a rural area so there aren’t a bunch of turns and buildings to hide behind. Perhaps realizing his predicament, the suspect pushes the Mustang past 140 mph on a long straightaway. The thing is ASP cruisers can match that speed, and the lead trooper does. Eventually, he gains on the pony car again. A quick move by the Mustang and the suspect is off again, the trooper and his colleagues in hot pursuit. After all, the longer a chase goes on, the more likely police are to swarm the area, making escape that much harder. This guy flogs the S197 hard, then starts throwing stuff out the window, like he’s trying to ditch evidence or something. He eventually runs headlong into a spike strip trap, drives into an open field, ending the car chase. Hopoate wins Manly wing spot, set to extend deal Hopoate wins Manly wing spot, set to extend deal Lehi Hopoate has won a spot in Manly’s backline, with coach Anthony Seibold confirming the young star is close to signing a contract extension. The Sea Eagles’ back five looms as one of the most intriguing selection squeezes going into round one, with six men fighting for spots against North Queensland. Hopoate played 14 straight NRL games after debuting as a little-known teenager last May, scoring nine tries and setting up seven others. The vast majority of those games came while the Sea Eagles were undermanned, with Seibold avoiding a hard call for most the season. Manly already have one of the most explosive wingers in the competition in Jason Saab, while Tommy Talau was close to the league’s most improved player last year. Saab has since battled an ankle injury throughout the off-season after having his syndesmosis ruptured last August, while Talau has also had ankle issues. But Seibold confirmed on Tuesday that Hopoate would start the year on the wing, irrespective of availabilities. “Turbo (Tom Trbojevic) will be our fullback, Reuben (Garrick) and Tolu (Koula) will be our centres, and then we’ll make a decision on our wingers,” Seibold said. “I feel like Lehi Hopoate has done enough to be in our back five because he’s had a good pre-season. “We’ll see out of Saaby, Tommy Talau and Clayton Faulalo who wins that last spot.” Seibold also indicated Manly were on the verge of announcing an extension for Hopoate, who is still on the club’s development list this year. Any new contract will accelerate his entry into the club’s top-30 roster, and extend the son of John Hopoate’s stay until beyond next year. “Lehi is really keen to stay longer term and we are keen to keep him longer term,” Seibold said. “There will be some news in and around Lehi and his contract in the near future. He’s developed a whole heap. He always had potential. “Watching him in 2023, I knew he had potential so I gave him a six-week pre-season last year and he performed really strongly, so we extended it to a full pre-season. “Handing a 19-year-old debut (against Melbourne), a lot of people probably thought we were crazy. “But I thought Lehi handled that night really well and was one of the finds of the season in the entire competition.” Hopoate had told media earlier at the Sea Eagles’ season launch he did not expect to start the year in the top team, albeit while more hungry than in 2024. “I’m really excited to go after this year. I would say I am hungry, but it is a bit nerve-wracking as well,” Hopoate said. “Physically I am probably the same, I have only gained a kilo or two. But mentally I feel like my mental state of things is very sharp at the moment. “We have a mental skills coach and he is helping me heaps with how to handle chaos and pressure.” Seibold also confirmed that Siosiua Taukeiaho would start in round one, playing his first game since the 2023 Super League grand final for Catalans. Search continues for missing fisherman pulled overboard by shark near Australia Search continues for missing fisherman pulled overboard by shark near Australia Feb. 24 (UPI) — A missing fisherman in Australia was dragged from a boat by a mako shark entangled in fishing gear, officials in New South Wales said. Authorities on Monday continued searching for Paul Barning, a member of the New South Wales Game Fishing Association competing in a tournament about 34 miles off the coast of Newcastle near Port Stephens. The search on Tuesday will be expanded to waters south of Port Kembla, the *********** Broadcasting Corp. reported. Searchers include volunteers from Marine Rescue Port Stephens, which dispatched rescue vessels. Authorities were alerted at about 1 p.m. Sunday local time that the 58-year-old man had fallen from his boat, Dark Horse. On Monday afternoon, Superintendent Joe McNulty from New South Wales Police Marine Area Command confirmed a shark was reeled in, but it did not attack. “The fishing boat at the time was retrieving a mako shark and we believe during that maneuver the man has become entangled in the fishing gear and has been forced over the side,” he said. Barning was not wearing a life jacket. NSW Game Fishing president Steve Lamond described the incident as “something that you are not likely to ever see again.” “It’s never happened before in Australia to my knowledge,” he said. NSW Ambulance Chie Superintendent Luke Wiseman said the man was on the boat with three other people, who made their way to the Nelson Bay area about 10 p.m. Sunday. Game fishing involves catching large and strong fish, including sharks, marlins and tuna. Last weekend, anglers reported three great white sharks circling their boat during a competition. U.S. back on the tariff trail U.S. back on the tariff trail US President Donald Trump speaks while signing an executive order in the Oval Office of the White House to impose 25% tariffs on all US imports of steel and aluminum, broadening his trade restrictions to some of the country’s top trading partners. Separately, the row between U.S. federal workers and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency continued after the Office of Personnel Management seemed to undermine Musk’s threat to federal workers. Musk’s DOGE had sent out an email to all federal workers last week, saying those who fail to submit a list of their recent accomplishments will face a forced “resignation.” OPM later notified top government human resources officers that responses to the email “is voluntary.” But Musk then doubled down on his threat, saying in a post on X on Monday night “Failure to respond a second time will result in termination.” — Lim Hui Jie What you need to know today Trump says tariffs on Canada and Mexico ‘will go forward’President Donald Trump said Monday that sweeping U.S. tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico “will go forward” when a monthlong delay on their implementation expires next week. Macron walks tightrope with Trump as he makes Europe’s case on Ukraine Macron walks tightrope with Trump as he makes Europe’s case on Ukraine Relations between Europe and the US are unquestionably in crisis, so merely keeping things together as French President Emmanuel Macron did at the White House on Monday stands as an achievement. He did that by praising, flattering and gently cajoling the US president as they took questions in the Oval Office and held a joint news conference. This is a playbook that many leaders around the world now see as more productive than outright plain speaking or criticism of Trump. Macron managed to navigate what could have been a tricky day in Washington without conceding or revealing too much. He spoke of both countries wanting peace, and while he gently corrected one of Trump’s claims on Europe’s support for Ukraine, he also agreed that Europe needed to take more responsibility for its own security. But Macron did make one important concession – that Trump was right to re-establish some kind of relationship with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. That is in sharp contrast to the view up until now in London, Paris and Berlin, which have all pursued a policy of isolating Putin and slapping sanctions on Russian industries and individuals. “There is good reason for President Trump to re-engage with President Putin,” Macron said, adding that the new administration represented “a big change”. Macron held out the prospect of European countries such as France and the *** being willing to play a leading role in ensuring the security of a post-truce Ukraine, possibly in the form of air power and troops stationed away from the frontline. But at the same time, he stressed the importance of having an American backstop. Macron, however, did not get a commitment of US back-up from his meeting in the Oval Office. And if he was looking for a scintilla of criticism of the Russian president from Trump, then he did not get that either. What he did get was, at least to some extent, Europe’s voice back at the table and he, along with other European leaders, will take some heart from that. Ros Atkins on… the fight for Ukraine’s critical minerals It is clear however, that the ambitions for re-establishing the kind of close relationship that Europe and the US have had since the end of World War Two are not on anyone’s roadmap. That is why Macron himself has been working on the idea of a more strategically autonomous Europe for some time, toying with ideas of combined European defence forces. His sense that Europe needs to adapt given the dramatic shift in the US position is shared by Friedrich Merz, who will be Germany’s next chancellor. Merz has already said that he believes the US under Donald Trump is indifferent to Europe’s fate, and that the continent needs to be independent of the US in terms of security. “My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” Merz said. But France, the *** and Germany have also got to be cognisant of the fact that not all European powers are so hostile to the US view on Ukraine. The rise of far-right nationalist parties in Europe, most notably in places like Germany where the AfD came second in Sunday’s elections, suggests many European citizens are also sceptical about the continent’s continued support for Kyiv. Later this week, *** Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who has been closely coordinating with his French counterpart, will come to Washington to reinforce their case on Ukraine. He, like Macron, believes his country has a special relationship with the US which can open doors and get a fair hearing. The problem is that Washington in the shape of Donald Trump is on transmit mode at the moment – pushing an agenda that leaves little room for the opinion of others. And while America has always had the ability to flex its muscles and get its way, Europe for the most part has not been on the receiving end. The fact that has changed is a sign of just how serious this rupture in established alliances has become. NSW Game and Fishing Association launches fundraiser for Paul Barning NSW Game and Fishing Association launches fundraiser for Paul Barning Friends have dug deep to support the family of beloved fisherman Paul Barning, who was lost at sea in a tragic tangle with a mako shark during a fishing competition. Mr Barning became entangled in fishing line while his vessel was reeling in a mako off the coast of Port Stephens during the Game Fishing Association state tournament on Sunday and was pulled into the water, police believe. “After the entanglement we believe the shark has submerged, pulling the man into that water,” NSW Police Superintendent Joe McNulty said on Monday “We believe the shark was quite large. “Their vessel was only 6.8m in length.” Police have said there was no evidence the shark attacked Mr Barning. The 58-year-old dad was an experienced fisherman and the current secretary, past president and life member of the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club. NSW Game and Fishing Association president Steve Lamond launched a fundraiser for Mr Barning’s family on Tuesday morning. The NSW Game and Fishing Association donated $5000. Mr Lamond paid tribute to Mr Barning in a heartfelt post on Monday. “He was tragically lost at sea in the most unlikely of circumstances while fishing on his boat ‘Dark Horse’ off Port Stephens on Sunday,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Leonie, his son Sam and daughters Eleanor and Brigette in this trying time. “We also have the crew and their families in our thoughts and prayers. Camera IconThe fundraiser for Mr Barning quickly approached its target of $35,000. Facebook. Credit: News Corp Australia “To those participants of the tournament that assisted in the search efforts, we thank you.” Mr Lamond later called the incident “an absolute freak tragedy”. “There was definitely no shark attack as such involved,” he said. “It was absolutely just an absolute freak tragedy that has occurred during the attempt to capture a fish.” Mr Barning’s body has not yet been found and police have indicated their search would resume on Tuesday. The search zone will expand to include areas further south along the coast. Superintendent McNulty said the outcome may have been different had Mr Barning been wearing a life jacket, and stressed the importance of boat safety. “Doesn’t matter how experienced you are, how long you’ve been fishing, please wear a life jacket,” he said. “It’s just a safety message that we really need to get out to all members of the boating community.” Source link #NSW #Game #Fishing #Association #launches #fundraiser #Paul #Barning Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Remaining assault, ******* assault charges stayed in case against former Yellowknife councillor Remaining assault, ******* assault charges stayed in case against former Yellowknife councillor Eight charges against a former Yellowknife city councillor were stayed Monday, after a jury failed to reach a verdict on them in January. Robin Williams faced 14 charges of assault and ******* assault earlier this year. After a two-week trial, a jury found Williams not guilty on six charges and could not reach a consensus on the remaining eight. The Crown prosecutor appeared in court Monday to stay the remaining charges. A stay of charges means the charges could be revived, though that rarely happens. Williams, reached by phone, said the case has been devastating. “Absolutely devastating for my life,” he said. “False accusations against men are so prevalent in our society and media is very quick to take a side.” The ********* government estimates between two and four per cent of ******* assault allegations are false. In his closing arguments during trial, Williams’ defence lawyer Evan McIntyre argued that Williams’ accuser lied under oath multiple times. He also talked about the impact the allegations have had on his client. Crown prosecutor Brian Bencze, meanwhile, said the accuser’s testimony was credible. He said the Crown respects the decision. JPMorgan executive calls for ‘more hustle’ after return to office mandate JPMorgan executive calls for ‘more hustle’ after return to office mandate Exterior view of JPMorgan Chase & Co. branch on January 14, 2025 in New York City, New York. JPMorgan Chase & Co. is scheduled to release earnings figures on January 15. Kena Betancur | Corbis News | Getty Images A JPMorgan Chase executive told thousands of employees he wanted “more hustle” days after the bank’s CEO Jamie Dimon scorned staff pushback against its five-day return-to-office policy. The memo illustrates the tension between JPMorgan’s emphasis on in-office culture and employees who cite its strong performance while flexible working policies were in place. “We need more hustle and scrappiness,” Rohan Amin, chief product officer of the Chase consumer business, wrote in a memo to more than 25,000 employees last week. He cited a call for feedback on artificial intelligence that prompted fewer than five responses, and gave another example in which internal bureaucracy blocked better results. Some employees balked at Amin’s criticism, according to two sources who declined to be identified discussing personnel matters. By contrast, another source said Amin received an influx of productive feedback in response to the latest memo. “There’s a lot happening–return to office adjustments, open questions, real estate challenges,” Amin wrote. “I also know that uncertainty can be frustrating… That said, I have to ask: where’s the hustle?” Separately, Dimon told CNBC on Monday that he respects employees who don’t want to come into the office five days a week, but said the policy will not change because it is best for clients and the company. “I am not against working from home, I am against where it doesn’t work,” he said, adding that 10% of the bank’s jobs are done remotely. Some employees have sought advice from the Communications Workers of America on how they might set up a labor union, a rare thing in the U.S. finance sector. The petition has received 1,200 signatures, Dimon told CNBC. When asked about the in-person work policy during the a staff meeting earlier this month, Reuters reported exclusively on Dimon’s response: “Don’t waste time on it. I don’t care how many people sign that ******** petition,” he said at the time. On Monday, Dimon told CNBC that he shouldn’t swear in town hall meetings. Republican files article of impeachment against judge who ordered agencies to restore scrubbed data Republican files article of impeachment against judge who ordered agencies to restore scrubbed data Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) on Monday introduced an impeachment resolution against a federal judge who ordered federal health agencies to temporarily restore online datasets scrubbed as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on “gender ideology.” The article of impeachment says U.S. District Judge John Bates’s conduct in the case was “so utterly lacking in intellectual honesty and basic integrity that he is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors.” Earlier this month, Bates agreed with a left-leaning physicians group that federal health agencies likely violated federal law when they took down various data to align with President Trump’s executive order recognizing only two sexes. “At no point in American history has the judiciary considered the surgical or chemical castration of healthy children to be a compelling or even legitimate health concern and it shouldn’t start now. We must protect our children from predators like Judge Bates,” Ogles wrote on the social platform X. Bates sits on Washington, D.C.’s federal trial court and was appointed to the bench by the younger former President Bush in 2001. Bates declined to comment through a court spokesperson. Impeaching federal judges has become an exceedingly rare occurrence. A majority of the House would need to vote to impeach Bates, and to remove him from office, two-thirds of the Senate would have to vote to convict. Ogles’s new resolution comes after another Republican congressman, Rep. Eli Crane (Ariz.), introduced articles of impeachment against a New York-based federal judge who temporarily blocked Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from gaining access to critical Treasury Department payment system. Musk has stepped up his attacks on judges who have ruled against the administration and reposted Ogles’s impeachment article announcement in an apparent show of support. “Time to impeach judges who violate the law,” Musk wrote on X. The health website data case revolves around a provision of the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) that requires agencies to provide adequate notice before terminating significant information products. A similar lawsuit was filed Monday over climate datasets scrubbed from government websites. Though Bates’s order required the Trump administration to restore various health datasets, the ruling is only temporary and is set to expire Tuesday. The parties have split on the proper next steps. The left-leaning group that is suing wants the judge’s order to be extended. The Trump administration wants the order to expire, but it committed to conducting a “review to determine the applicability of” the PRA and “take the steps necessary to comply” once the review is complete. Sharks speedster has unfinished business with the USA Sharks speedster has unfinished business with the USA Cronulla flyer Ronaldo Mulitalo could become the biggest star in America’s international rugby league history after revealing a dream to represent his heritage alongside his brother. Born in Auckland to American Samoan parents, Mulitalo played for the USA in the World Cup Nines in 2019, the last major tournament for which the fledgling rugby league nation qualified. But the winger has never pulled the USA jersey on in 13-a-side rugby league, with the 25-year-old prioritising his Sharks commitments over World Cup qualifiers since then. After reaching a quarter-final at the 2013 World Cup and the group stage in 2017, the USA missed qualification for the most recent World Cup in 2022 and won’t feature at the 2026 edition. But Mulitalo, currently in Las Vegas for Cronulla’s NRL clash with Penrith, could be on hand to help the Tomahawks return to international rugby league’s showpiece event in 2030. Mulitalo has previously represented tier-one nation New Zealand and tier-two nation Samoa, but would be eligible to switch allegiance from Samoa to the USA with approval from the International Rugby League. He’s hopeful he would be joined by twin brother Lorenzo, who did not feature in the 2019 Nines tournament but made his NRL debut for Parramatta last year. “Hopefully in the coming years we get a chance to maybe represent them (the USA) later down the track and give back to the game, grow the game there,” Ronaldo told AAP. “That’s something me and my brother will probably do towards the back-end of my career. He’s pretty keen on doing it.” Clint Newton, Eddy Pettybourne and Daniel Vidot are among those to have played both in the NRL and for the USA, whose national team is usually comprised mostly of American-based players and semi-professionals. Mulitalo, one of the NRL’s leading wingers, would undoubtedly be the best player to have represented the nation currently ranked 24th in the world – below Chile and the Philippines. He was far from a household name during his last brush with American rugby league in 2019, having made his NRL debut as a teenager earlier that year. “Thinking back on 2019, I was a young kid coming through. I get to this side of my career, I’ve played over 100 games in the NRL,” he said. “It’s a bit of a funny feeling.” Mulitalo remains in touch with his former nines teammates via social media. “They’ve kept tabs on me and I’ve kept tabs on them as well,” he said. “l’m still appreciative of the experience of playing for USA and hopefully one day I get to get back into that scene.” Cronulla’s clash with the Panthers on Sunday (AEDT) will be Mulitalo’s first premiership match since signing a bumper contract extension earlier this month. Reports had linked him with a move north to Brisbane, but the winger is now aiming to extend his stay with the Sharks beyond 2028, when his new deal expires. “Hopefully I ride out my career here with these guys. Most of these guys, I’ve come through all the grades with. I’m really happy I’ve stuck here,” he said.
