Balatro adds free Friends of Jimbo 4 collab pack alongside Xbox Game Pass launch
Assassin’s Creed, Slay the Princess and more join the fray
Now on Xbox Game Pass
Jimbo sure is popular, isn’t he
Playstack and LocalThunk have just dropped the latest update within Balatro, adding even more mayhem to the already chaotic card game. Now, I know I said the last one was the biggest pack, but Jimbo obviously needs to outdo himself and prove just how popular he is with an even ******* Friends of Jimbo 4 collab pack.
The latest update within Balatro is absolutely free, and will add Assassin’s Creed, Bugsnax, Critical Role, and Dead by Daylight among other team-ups. It’s also coming to Xbox Game Pass, on top of welcoming Rust, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, Slay the Princess, and Vault-Tec to the mix. There’s apparently going to be a huge patch rolling out soon too, so it’s worth sticking around for that.
If you’re still part of the very, very small percentage of gamers who haven’t played the poker roguelike like I am, I suppose now’s as good a time as any to join the bandwagon because of these “unexpected allies”. Personally, though, I’m just happy to see Ashley Johnson in the new trailer.
You can also have a look at our Balatro review, where Iwan shares his love for the deck-builder and more. Now, if you’re very much caught in the compelling loop yourself, why not take a look at our Balatro tier list to get a feel for the best cards?
In the meantime, if you’re eager to join in on all the fun, you can do so by checking it out on the App Store and on Google Play. It’s a premium purchase at $9.99 a pop or your local equivalent.
You can also join the community of followers on the official Twitter page to stay updated on all the latest developments, visit the official website for more info, or take a little peek at the embedded clip above to get a feel of the vibes and visuals.

Women Of All Ages Are Sharing The Proactive Health Measures They’re Taking Now That RFK Jr. Has Been Confirmed As Health Secretary
Women Of All Ages Are Sharing The Proactive Health Measures They’re Taking Now That RFK Jr. Has Been Confirmed As Health Secretary
RFK Jr. — who has long touted conspiracy theories regarding healthcare and safety — was recently sworn in as the US’s 26th Health Secretary. With the “Make America Healthy Again Commission,” he and the Trump administration intend to address “the growing health crisis in America…”
A man in a suit is being sworn in, holding a book, while a woman stands beside him. A portrait of Ronald Reagan is seen in the background
However, in a little over a week, the Commission has already questioned the usage of vital mental health medications and launched an examination into the current childhood vaccine schedule, despite previous promises that the schedule would remain unchanged. Coupled with the precarious state of reproductive rights, American women are understandably uneasy about their future healthcare…
Which is why u/skermahger asked the r/WomenOver30 community, “What should I be doing health-wise as a woman over 30 to protect myself and prepare for the next four years now that RFK Jr. is confirmed as the health secretary?” Women were more than happy to share how they plan to protect their physical and mental health under the Trump administration. From crucial vaccinations to community action, here is some of their best advice:
Also, feel free to share your health advice using this Google form!
1.”As someone who works in digital marketing with public data — delete your ******* tracking app. Nothing is stopping these companies from giving your data to authorities who want to prosecute women for suspicion of abortions.'”
Smartphone displaying a ******* calendar app, surrounded by small heart shapes on a surface
—u/watsername
“Consider long-term birth control (IUD, implant, etc.) or go old-school and track your cycle on a paper calendar. Prioritize your health.
We have no clue what will happen, but if history is correct, this will take a lot longer than four years to undo.”
—u/dko11
2.”This needs to be mentioned: organize. Find a local political group and get involved ASAP — from grassroots campaigns to volunteering for abortion funds.”
“Since 2015, I have watched people advocate for personal safety measures that pale in comparison to deep systemic issues. I am not saying personal safety guidelines are useless — they’re actually VERY useful. But they can only keep you safe for a short amount of time. Your IUD (I have one, as well) will not keep you safe if they pass laws against both abortion and contraception. If you need it removed or changed, or if it fails and you need an abortion, you’ll be in a bad situation.
Yes, get your passports, your vaccines, and your birth control. Use ******* tracking methods that cannot be monitored or petitioned by the US government, and have an emergency fund so finances will not prevent you from seeking safety — but, above all, do not forget that you need to be part of the change.”
—u/KillTheBoyBand
3.”Get the series of HPV vaccines! RFK Jr. has long been a vocal critic of vaccines, including the HPV (cervical *******) vaccine, Gardasil. He has actively campaigned against vaccines while financially benefiting from their related lawsuits.”
“When I was growing up, my dad was anti-vax, so I wasn’t allowed to receive the HPV vaccine while in school. By the time I got it as an adult, I had already contracted one of the high-risk ******* strains. Now, at 31 years old, I already have pre-cervical *******.”
—u/peppapigforever12
4.”Get on long-term birth control, if you can. I got an implant. Don’t let the horror stories on the internet scare you; implants are an option if you can’t make it through an IUD insertion.”
A gloved hand holds an IUD against a plain background, illustrating a medical device used for contraception
—u/zestfully_clean_
“Same. I know people who have had nightmarish experiences with IUDs, but please do not let one person’s experience make the decision for you.
If an IUD is an option, I say go for it! I just got a new one in December. I had another year on my old one, but given the new administration, I figured I’d just get it done now.
This is my third IUD. The first insertion was uncomfortable but fine. Second was a cinch. The removal of the second was a little ugly — my doctor couldn’t get it out and had another doctor do it — but I think that was a doctor-specific problem. The doctor who took it out (and later performed my third insertion) was SO smooth.
Zero downtime on my part. Despite the wonky second removal attempt, I still took the subway home, went to the grocery store, etc.
And I haven’t had a ******* in about 15 years which doesn’t *****.”
—u/anonymess7
5.”Sometimes I wonder if this is overly pessimistic, but if you have the space, start a garden.”
“Over the past few years, I’ve casually grown some of my own food, and I really want to kick it up a notch now because who knows what will happen? Between deportation, trade wars, and a likely gutting of the FDA, many elements could make fresh food unaffordable or unsafe.
Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, lettuces, cucumbers, and location-appropriate fruit trees are usually easy to grow without experience. Look up the plants that grow well in your area! You can also use an aero garden or something similar to grow food in an apartment.”
—u/ventricles
6.”Get sterilized if you never plan on having children. With the rising rates of childbirth-related deaths, the risk isn’t worth it.”
—u/critiqu3
7.”I might be misinformed about how serious this is, but my first thought was to stock up on high-fluoride toothpaste. These morons keep talking about removing fluoride from the water, and having healthy teeth is crucial to general health.”
Person applying toothpaste onto a toothbrush over a bathroom sink
—u/ragefulhorse
“Fluoride in your toothpaste (or nano-hydroxyapatite, which he likely won’t ban) is important. You can also do a fluoride rinse if you are at high risk (GERD, dry mouth, or a condition that causes vomiting). However, fluoride in the water mainly protects children and adults with certain health conditions — especially those without access to proper dental care. I absolutely do not want fluoride to be removed.”
—u/the_comeback_quagga
8.”Go to the gym, get strong, and improve your health outcomes for your 40s, 50s, and beyond because we all know that medication is pricey. We also know that a bad mammogram can happen, and you do NOT want to go through chemo without muscle mass.”
“Our healthcare system is already sh*tty, and it’s going to get even worse. We can’t afford to wait around.”
—u/zestfully_clean_
9.”Make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible and ask them to check your vaccine titers. Get vaccinated for anything low.”
—u/NoLemon5426
“I asked my pharmacist about titers, and the guidelines are pretty simple for vaccines; some are ‘lifetime good’ (such as the polio vaccine, unless you’re over 60, in which case you might need a booster), and some are ‘it’s been a decade, time for a booster’ and they don’t need to run titers.
I hadn’t gotten a tetanus shot in a while and recently got the TDAP (which is typically given every 10 years). I am not in a risk group needing the MMR vaccine again, but I did take the flu and pneumonia vax.”
—u/EdgeCityRed
10.”Decentralize your healthcare as much as possible from the ‘dominant’ system. For example, learn CPR/First Aid. It will be useful because our healthcare system is already crumbling — and learn how to take care of minor things at home to avoid the hassle of an ER.”
Medical students observe an instructor demonstrating on a resuscitation mannequin in a classroom setting
—u/NoLemon5426
“Check EMT/ambulance services in your area for this type of training. When our office installed a new AED, my job held employee emergency training. The ambulance service had a certified trainer on staff — which was more accessible and less expensive than going through the Red Cross itself — but we all had Red Cross certification.
It’s especially useful if you have a group that wants to do it together.”
—u/FriendsCallMeStreet
11.”Build (or strengthen) a dependable community. Not just for help dealing with all the crap that’s going to happen, but one that is a nurturing safe space for being silly and bringing positivity to your life.”
—u/MaIngallsisaracist
12.”When you see your GP, get prescriptions for Plan B and other pregnancy-related medications because access to those may become limited/nonexistent. Even if you don’t need those things, having them readily available for someone else could be helpful.”
—u/FrankaGrimes
“Generic Plan B is available over-the-counter and cheap, and the other pregnancy-related medications can be purchased online. How it’s bought and delivered might initially feel sketchy, but it works, and the meds come in the mail.”
—u/Cyber_Punk_87
13.And finally, “If you have the means, I suggest leaving the country.”
Hand holds a U.S. passport and a COVID-19 vaccination card above a ****** suitcase on a wooden floor
“This sh*t show will only get worse, and as long as you’re free and able, there’s no reason for you to stick around and watch the circus unfold.”
—u/hocarestho

Singapore’s biggest bank DBS to cut 4,000 roles as as it embraces AI
Singapore’s biggest bank DBS to cut 4,000 roles as as it embraces AI
Singapore’s biggest bank says it expects to cut 4,000 roles over the next three years as artificial intelligence (AI) takes on more work currently done by humans.
“The reduction in workforce will come from natural attrition as temporary and contract roles roll off over the next few years,” a DBS spokesperson told the BBC.
Permanent staff are not expected to be affected by the cuts. The bank’s outgoing chief executive Piyush Gupta also said it expects to create around 1,000 new AI-related jobs.
It makes DBS one of the first major banks to offer details on how AI will affect its operations.
The company did not say how many jobs would be cut in Singapore or which roles would be affected.
DBS currently has between 8,000 and 9,000 temporary and contract workers. The bank employs a total of around 41,000 people.
Last year, Mr Gupta said DBS had been working on AI for over a decade.
“We today deploy over 800 AI models across 350 use cases, and expect the measured economic impact of these to exceed S$1bn ($745m; £592m) in 2025,” he added.
Mr Gupta is set to leave the firm at the end of March. Current deputy chief executive Tan Su Shan will replace him.
The ongoing proliferation of AI technology has put its benefits and risks under the spotlight, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) saying in 2024 that it is set to affect nearly 40% of all jobs worldwide.
The IMF’s managing director Kristalina Georgieva said that “in most scenarios, AI will likely worsen overall inequality”.
The governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, told the BBC last year that AI will not be a “mass destroyer of jobs” and human workers will learn to work with new technologies.
Mr Bailey said that while there are risks with AI, “there is great potential with it”.

‘Valentine’s Day *******’ case dropped after two trials
‘Valentine’s Day *******’ case dropped after two trials
A taxi driver will not face a third trial over the ******* of a ******* national who was bludgeoned to death in his apartment on Valentine’s Day almost two decades ago.
Naji Fakhreddine, 69, had been accused of murdering Bernd Lehmann on February 14, 2008 following a ******* encounter in his apartment in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Ashfield.
The 66-year-old victim had been due to fly back to Germany on the day of his death, the NSW Supreme Court was previously told.
The matter went to two separate ******* trials with a second jury coming back in October to say it had been unable to reach a verdict.
On Friday, lawyers for the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions told the court they would no longer be pursuing the case.
Under prosecution guidelines, the decision to proceed to a third trial must be made “only in exceptional circumstances”.
Mr Fakhreddine and Mr Lehmann had met at a nearby leagues club and gone back to the latter’s home, where the taxi driver performed ********* on the ******* national before the violent attack, jurors heard in September.
Mr Lehmann’s body was found soon after lying face down in his kitchen doorway, with a 2.7kg statuette next to him and covered in blood.
A large cut had been made to the back of his neck and white flecks of plastic were found inside the deep wound, the jury heard.
Mr Fakhreddine’s DNA had linked him to the cold-case crime through swabs taken in 2020.
He was arrested in March 2021 but always denied having anything to do with the *******.
Taking the witness stand at the earlier trial in October 2023, Mr Fakhreddine claimed Mr Lehmann had been killed by home invaders.

An invasive *********** crustacean was found in these US waters. Is it harmful?
An invasive *********** crustacean was found in these US waters. Is it harmful?
A new critter is creeping into the United States’ waters.
The invasive *********** redclaw crayfish was recently spotted in Southern Texas, roughly 8,000 miles away from its home. The freshwater crustacean is indigenous to the rivers of northern Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea.
Sightings of the species in the Rio Grande Valley have sparked fear among some Texas environmental officials, who say the crayfish could threaten local wildlife and wetland ecosystems.
Here’s what you need to know.
How did the *********** crayfish species arrive in Texas?
The first *********** redclaw crayfish was reported in the U.S. in 2013 by a user on the animal identification website iNaturalist, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. The sighting was of a female crayfish walking with her young at Lake Balboa in Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
More: 6 animals that mate for life: See the enduring pairs and learn about their love languages
Nearly a decade later, a second crayfish was spotted at an apartment complex pond in Texas in 2022. That sighting prompted an investigation from area officials. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Aquatic Biologist Dr. Archis Grubh ultimately found three other crayfish in the same area.
Now, Grubh and other researchers are investigating just how far the crayfish have spread throughout the Rio Grande Valley − but they don’t have a definite answer yet. Each female can lay up to 5,000 eggs annually, causing concern they could be breeding rapidly. However, area officials say they haven’t seen evidence of that.
The invasive *********** redclaw crayfish has intruded Texas wetlands in the Rio Grande Valley.
Grubh told USA TODAY his team has laid traps with hot dogs in the freshwater ways around Brownsville, Texas, to try and catch the crayfish and figure out where they have traveled. The project is slated to conclude next year, but Grubh said researchers have found the crayfish “have not spread out much” in Southern Texas so far.
He and other officials haven’t confirmed how the species got to the U.S., but they believe it could be a result of an act called “aquarium dumping.”
Monica McGarrity, Texas Parks and Wildlife’s senior scientist for aquatic and invasive species, explained in a statement after the 2022 discoveries that “release of aquarium life” is “a key means by which invasive species such as these crayfish are introduced.”
More: Meet Poppy the baby pygmy hippo in person: What to know about meet-and-greet, ticket cost
“Well-meaning, uninformed aquarium owners sometimes release their pets thinking they’re doing the best thing for them, but if they do survive, they can become invasive and harm the native aquatic species and ecosystem,” McGarrity said at the time.
Is the *********** crayfish harmful?
The *********** redclaw crayfish isn’t generally harmful to humans. It’s neither poisonous nor venomous, though it does have pincers it can use to defend itself if threatened.
Redclaw crayfish don’t stay out in the open. Primarily bottom dwellers, the species prefers to hide in crevices or under rocks and debris in the water. Humans looking to see them would need to actively search to come into close contact.
But scientists have warned that the species could be harmful to the ecosystems it invades. The animals can grow up to two pounds in less than a year. Their large size and rapid reproduction rate allow them to outcompete native species, potentially overtaking food sources and disrupting local ecosystems.
The *********** redclaw crayfish also can carry something called a crayfish plague – a parasite that could infect the area’s native crayfish species, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Can you eat *********** redclaw crayfish?
The *********** redclaw crayfish is essentially Australia’s version of a crawfish or crawdad. Crayfish, crawfish and crawdad are all the same animal, but they’re called different names in different regions.
The *********** redclaw crayfish are much larger than the species native to the U.S. They can grow close to 10 inches long, about the size of some lobsters. They are edible and are commonly farmed in Australia for commercial consumption.

Similar to the crawfish found in Southeastern states, the meat is mild and sweet.
However, it’s unlikely that you’ll come across enough redclaws in Texas waters to make it worthwhile for consumption.
If you believe you see one, Texas Parks and Wildlife recommends reporting emailing a picture of the animal and its location to *****@*****.tld.

China woos Bangladesh in Beijing trip
China woos Bangladesh in Beijing trip
A 22-member Bangladeshi delegation of political leaders, civil society activists, academics and journalists have begun a 10-day visit to China.
They will be having talks with ******** government officials and senior members of the ruling ********** Party, a delegation leader confirmed with the BBC.
Analysts say China is making overtures while diplomatic tensions have risen between Bangladesh and India on a range of issues.
This includes ousted Bangladeshi leader Sheikh Hasina living in exile in India. Dhaka has requested her extradition but Delhi has refused.
Abdul Moyeen Khan, a senior official from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) who’s leading the delegation in Beijing, told the BBC: “It’s basically a goodwill visit, initiated by Beijing.”
“It is unique because China this time has invited a team representing various groups in Bangladesh.”
Many of the delegation members are from the BNP and its allies. The BNP, headed by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, is one of the main parties in Bangladesh, besides the Awami League led by Hasina.
The delegation also includes several representatives from the student movement that began the mass uprising against Hasina that eventually ousted the prime minister in August last year.
An interim government, led by the Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is currently in charge.
It has been urging India to repatriate Hasina to face charges of crimes against humanity and money laundering, among other allegations. The UN says Hasina’s government’s crackdown on protesters during the uprising killed about 1,400 people.
So far India has showed no sign of extraditing Hasina, who denies the charges.
Delhi and Dhaka had maintained close ties during the 15-year rule of Ms Hasina, who was widely seen by her critics as pro-India. While maintaining close ties with Delhi, she balanced it with her relationship with Beijing.
After the fall of Hasina, Beijing has stepped up its interaction with Bangladeshi leaders, activists and delegations, including from Islamist parties.
This week’s visit follows a meeting between the Bangladesh interim government’s foreign policy advisor Touhid Hossain and the ******** foreign minister Wang Yi in Beijing in January.
It also marks the second time BNP officials have visited China in recent months, after Beijing hosted a BNP delegation late last year.
With the political vacuum and absence of India’s influence, analysts say, Beijing is trying to increase its foothold in Bangladesh, a country of about 170 million people.
China is Bangladesh’s largest trading partner with bilateral trade amounting to around $24bn (£19bn) – the vast majority of that consists of ******** exports to the South Asian country.
The Bangladeshi military also heavily relies on ******** equipment and ammunition with more than 70% of supplies coming from China.
Compared to Beijing’s overtures, India has had very limited interactions with the interim government and other Bangladeshi political leaders in the past six months.
The BNP held a protest in December alleging India’s interference in Bangladesh’s internal matters by hosting Hasina. Some advisors of the interim government have also criticised Delhi on the same issue.
This criticism has sparked sharp reaction from Delhi.
The Indian foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said last week that it was up to Bangladesh to decide on “what kind of relationship they want with us”.
He described the criticism of India by Bangladeshi officials and politicians as “absolutely ridiculous”.
Some argue that this increasingly tense rhetoric between Dhaka and Delhi could push Bangladesh towards China.
The latest events indicate that Bangladesh has joined fellow South Asian countries Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Nepal as a target for both Delhi and Beijing, as the superpowers jostle for influence.
“I don’t believe India should consider the whole subcontinent is under Delhi’s sphere of influence. That attitude would make India suffer,” ******** analyst Zhou Bo, a senior fellow at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, told the BBC.

‘Heinous’ abusive husband imprisoned wife in their home
‘Heinous’ abusive husband imprisoned wife in their home
A violent husband imprisoned his wife in their home and subjected her to years of “heinous” abuse including daily beatings for not performing domestic duties to his standards.
The man was aged in his early 20s when he began a three-year campaign of physical, emotional, verbal and ******* abuse against his partner, whom he had met on a dating app in 2020.
The husband, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to an aggravated charge of causing a person to enter into or remain in servitude, along with two assault charges.
He is the first person to face sentencing for aggravated servitude in Victoria.
He beat his wife with household objects such as metal poles from a high chair, belts, electrical cords and mobile phones, and the physical abuse continued when she became pregnant with their daughter, prosecutors told the court.
The ordeal was only brought to an end in August 2023, when the woman’s mother went to police.
After the man was arrested, he confirmed to police his wife had not been out of the house without him for 12 months, the Supreme Court was told on Tuesday.
The man’s former wife told the court the physical and mental trauma caused by the abuse made her believe she did not deserve happiness.
“I feel I’m worthless and I deserve to be treated poorly as my ex-partner did. I feel bad whenever I’m happy,” the woman said.
“I don’t feel much safer even though I know he is in custody.”
He began isolating her from family and friends from the beginning of their relationship, and while she was a student he would go to classes and watch her, eventually forcing her to stop attending, prosecutor Elizabeth Ruddle said.
He stopped her from using a mobile phone and did not allow her to leave home without him, in the six months before his arrest she only left their Melbourne apartment three times, she said.
He would attend social events, including playing futsal, and force his wife to video herself from their apartment so that he could ensure she did not leave.
The man also placed a rubber band on the outside of the door handle, as a marker to see if she tried to get out of their bedroom.
If she did not wash dishes or clothing to his liking, he would hit, slap or beat his wife using household objects.
He further controlled all of her finances and she had transferred him more than $50,000, leaving her with nothing in her bank account.
“The offender knowingly committed heinous acts of family violence on a daily basis through controlling behaviours and extreme degradation, breaching the liberty and human rights of both victims (the mother and baby) for the majority of their relationship,” Ms Ruddle told the court.
The woman “constantly feared for her own ******** and that of her daughter” and was covered in injuries when police intervened and took her to hospital, she said.
“The state of (the woman) was very confronting for all first emergency responders,” Ms Ruddle said.
The man, who is facing up to 20 years behind bars, told police “I give her consequences” for “lying” and claimed he had assaulted her amidst a toxic relationship when he was arrested, Ms Ruddle said.
His barrister Theo Kassimatis KC said, while the offending was serious, he urged the judge not to find it was the “worst case example” of aggravated servitude because it was the first sentence for the offence.
He also asked Justice Jane Dixon to take into account the man’s early guilty plea, his young age and vulnerability in prison.
The hearing was adjourned to Wednesday afternoon.

Peace must not mean surrendering Ukraine, Macron says alongside Trump
Peace must not mean surrendering Ukraine, Macron says alongside Trump
French President Emmanuel Macron said any peace deal in Ukraine must come with security guarantees, as he met US President Donald Trump at the White House for talks on the war.
“This peace must not be a surrender of Ukraine, it must not mean a ceasefire without guarantees,” he said as the two leaders held a joint news conference following their meeting on Monday.
Trump, who did not mention security guarantees himself, said the cost and burden of securing peace in Ukraine must be paid for by European nations and not just the US.
Macron responded that Europe understood the need to “more fairly share the security burden”, and added that talks on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion had shown a path forward.
While the pair exchanged warm words throughout Monday, some clear differences emerged on the issue of ending the war in Ukraine as they spoke to reporters in the Oval Office and then held a 40-minute news conference later in the day.
The topic of including security guarantees in any peace deal was one area of difference, as was the potential next steps to end the war.
Trump said the war could end “within weeks” and he wanted a ceasefire as soon as possible, adding that he would visit Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin once one was agreed.
Macron, however, pushed a more considered approach involving a truce and then a broader peace deal that would include clear guarantees for protecting Ukraine long-term.
“We want peace swiftly, but we don’t want an agreement that is weak,” he said.
The pair did agree, however, that any peace deal should include the deployment of European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine. That suggestion has been rejected outright by Russia.
“They would not be along the front lines. They would not be part of any conflict. They would be there to ensure that the peace is respected,” Macron said in the Oval Office.
Trump then said Russian President Vladimir Putin would accept that. “I specifically asked him that question. He has no problem with it,” he said.
The French president praised Trump’s efforts to engage with Putin in recent weeks, saying “there is good reason” for him to do so.
Trump declined to call Putin a “dictator” after using the term last week to describe Ukraine’s president, and said he planned to meet with the Russian leader after holding a call with him last week.
“I don’t know when we’ll speak,” Trump said. “At some point I’ll be meeting with President Putin.”
He also invited Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House to conclude a deal to share some of the country’s natural resources. “He may come in this week or next week,” Trump said. “I’d love to meet him.”
And while there were no moments of open disagreement between Trump and Macron, the French president did interrupt his US counterpart in the Oval Office to push back on his claim that EU aid to Ukraine was all in the form of loans.
“No, to be frank, we paid. We paid 60% of the total effort,” Macron said.
“If you believe that, it’s OK with me,” Trump replied.
The meeting between the two leaders came on the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Zelensky began the day with a news release marking “three years of absolute heroism of Ukrainians” before hosting an event with global representatives.
At the event in Kyiv, which was attended by many world leaders, he said “we hope that we can finish this war this year”.
Other leaders, including from the ***, Germany and Japan, spoke by video link. There was no US representation.
******* President Frank-Walter Steinmeier addressed the recently warming relations between Moscow and Washington.
“Russia may have gained an open ear in the White House but they have not gained an inch of legitimacy,” he said.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen told attendees: “We must speed up the delivery of weapons and ammunition” to Ukraine, saying the war remains “the most central and consequential crisis for Europe’s future”.
US sides with Russia at UN
Also on Monday, the US twice sided with Russia in votes at the UN related to the war in Ukraine.
The two countries first opposed a European-drafted resolution condemning Moscow’s actions and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity, which was eventually passed by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
UNGA members backed the European resolution by 93 votes but the US did not abstain but actually voted against it, along with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 other states.
The US and Russia then backed a US-drafted resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an end to the conflict but containing no criticism of Russia.
The Security Council resolution was passed but two key US allies, the *** and France, abstained in the vote after their attempts to amend the wording were vetoed.
Meanwhile, the EU and *** passed a fresh round of sanctions on Russia on Monday. The EU sanctions, the 16th round passed since Russia’s invasion, targets Russia’s aluminium exports, and its so-called “shadow fleet” of ships allegedly used to bypass sanctions.
The *** sanctions target machine tools and electronics used by Russia military, and the defence minister of North Korea who is allegedly responsible for deploying over 11,000 forces to Russia to assist in the war.

Vivo V50 Review: Fancy Design Backed by Big Battery Life
Vivo V50 Review: Fancy Design Backed by Big Battery Life
Vivo, a brand known mainly for its mid-premium segment smartphones, is seeing increasing competition with every passing year. While it was difficult to find features such as a good camera and battery life in this segment a few years ago, the competition has now caught up. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 14 Pro+ (which was earlier a part of its budget series of devices) is now delivering good value priced from Rs. 30,999. And the same applies to brands like Poco and Realme, which have gotten increasingly aggressive with pricing. With Vivo now fully aware of the competition, inching closer with every passing year, it has now come up with what we believe is a tolerable successor for its mid-range V40 series. The Vivo V50 has plenty of upgrades over the previous models, and for once, some of these actually make sense.
Vivo V50 Design: Quad-curved display done right
Dimensions – 163.29 x 76.72 x 7.57mm
Weight – 199g
Durability – IP68 + IP69
Unlike its predecessors, the Vivo V50 has a slim, rounded design that looks and feels premium. The phone comes in three finishes—Titanium Grey, Starry Night and Rose Red. The glass rear panel of the Rose Red unit we received has a smooth matte finish. It’s nice to see that the odd keyhole-shaped camera module does not stand out as much because it, too, has been given the matte-finish treatment. Vivo’s Aura ring light has grown ******* in diameter, providing better coverage than the previous implementation.
The Vivo V50 has a smooth, satin-like finish for its rear panel but packs a solid IP69 rating for dust and water resistance
The rounded pebble-like design is very comfortable to hold, and the chrome-finished polycarbonate frame (also the chassis), apart from helping reduce weight, also makes the phone easier to grip. The phone still has a heft to it at 199 grams, but you need to keep in mind that it packs in a 6,000mAh battery.
Unlike most smartphones we have seen in the premium segment, Vivo indeed got the micro quad-curved display right with its V50. With most micro-quad-curved display panels, the deal is to make the content appear a bit immersive without the content sliding too far into the curved sides and hence appearing distorted. The upside of using this tech is that even the display border appears thinner if done right. On most premium smartphones (usually by ******** manufacturers), micro-quad-curved panels are typically accompanied by mid-frames with flat sides, which breaks the flow of the design by pairing rounded and flat surfaces.
The Vivo V50 has well-rounded, quad-curved panels and a curved mid-frame, which lend it a very comfortable grip and hand feel.
Vivo managed to pull this off well. Thanks to its unique combination of a quad-curved rear panel, a curved mid-frame, and a quad-curved display, it has a seamless look and feel. It reminds me of the older all-metal iPhone models, such as the iPhone 6, which also had a flat front and back but rounded sides.
My only nitpick about the Vivo V50’s design would be the slightly sharp cutout for the USB port and speaker grilles at the bottom.
This splendid design is backed up by a solid IP68 and IP69 rating for dust and water resistance, meaning you could take this phone for a swim in freshwater. However, do keep in mind that Vivo’s warranty (just like most manufacturers) does not cover damage caused by liquid ingress.
Vivo V50 Display: Looks great, and works great!
Display size – 6.77-inch, 2,392 × 1,080 pixels, FHD+ (387 PPI)
Display type – AMOLED, 6-90-120Hz
Display protection – Schott
Looks aside, the display has thin borders all around, and the curved edges also mean more reflections when viewing the display outdoors, which can get distracting. Outdoor legibility, thanks to the claimed 4,500 nits of peak brightness, was not a problem, and the same can be said about the display’s colours, which appeared natural in all types of lighting conditions. The display also supports HDR10 content, and it appeared as expected.
Obvious downgrades aside, I also noticed that the quad-curved panel introduced this year does lose a few pixels. The Vivo V40’s curved-edge display had a resolution of 2,800 × 1,260 pixels, while the new model offers a slightly lower 2,392 × 1,080 pixels. The differences in sharpness will be minor, so it will be hard to tell the difference.
The Vivo V50’s quad-curved display produces some unnecessary reflections when viewed outdoors
The display is of the adaptive variety and switches between 60, 90, and 120Hz depending on the application or content being viewed. During the testing *******, I noticed random instances where the refresh rate of the display would drop to something well below 30Hz, leading to some supremely slowed-down, sluggish animations when using the phone. These were quite random, and the phone would sort itself out in about 5-10 seconds. However, after a recent bug fix and security update, I did not face the abovementioned issue.
Vivo V50 Software: AI add-ons
Software version – Android 15
Software – Funtouch OS 15
Software commitment – X years of software, X years of security updates
Funtouch OS has now moved on to Android 15, making it Funtouch OS 15. The mobile operating system remains typically Vivo, with a focus on customising the minutest of details that other manufacturers usually don’t bother with. The OS with Android 15 is now a lot more stable and smoother (except for the random hiccups I experienced) and comes with some minor visual enhancements like icon and theme customisation.
The main chunk of Funtouch OS 15’s add-ons comes with new AI tools. On the V50, I experimented with the AI Erase tool in the image editor but found the results unsatisfactory, as the tool struggled to perform even the most basic image edits successfully (or up to expectations). Next, I tried out the AI Call Translator tool, and it surprisingly worked well both for Hindi and Marathi callers, provided the caller spoke fluently.
Vivo’s Funtouch OS 15 has some new AI-infused features but these don’t work as expected. Customisation features (pictured) are a big plus.
Vivo V50 Performance: Gets the job done
Processor – Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3
RAM – 12GB (LPDDR4X)
Storage – 256GB (UFS 2.2)
Quick product refresh cycles are a thing with most ******** smartphone brands, especially in the budget and mid-range smartphone segments. Vivo is no stranger to such product release cycles, and so we saw the Vivo V30 and the Vivo V40 getting launched just 5 months apart! With such quick release cycles, it’s common for brands to retain design elements along with camera hardware while upgrading the processor and battery/charging performance.
And so we end up with Vivo’s processor of choice, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, which has been used in the past two generations of the V series. While I’d expect it to be tried and tested and reliable, I did find its performance a bit lacklustre while playing FPS games like Call of Duty Mobile, where the phone just could not maintain a smooth or steady frame rate. Even at the highest settings, Asphalt Legends: Unite performed smoothly. The display was just about tolerable in terms of sensitivity, so if you are into mobile gaming, this isn’t the phone for you.
The Vivo V50 gets two rear-facing cameras accompanied by a larger ring light than the V40
In terms of benchmarks, the Vivo V50 does not fare well when stacked against the competition, as better-performing smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoCs are available at and around this price point.

The stereo speakers can get very loud at full volume, but the sound lacks any bass whatsoever. The resulting audio is clear even though it does not sound full and rich. Haptic vibrations are far from crisp. Given the smartphone’s price tag, I expected better.
Vivo V50 Cameras: A mixed bag
Primary camera – 50-megapixel, f/1.8, AF, OIS
Ultrawide camera – 50-megapixel, f/2.0, AF
Selfie camera – 50-megapixel, f/2.0, AF
Vivo V50 ultrawide camera samples (tap images to expand)
The ultrawide camera snaps 12-megapixel binned images, and the results are average at best. There’s noticeable lens barrel distortion around the edges of the image and plenty of purple fringing in the brighter areas. The colours are alright, but there’s some oversharpening and aggressive noise reduction, which produces flat, oil-painting-like textures even in daylight. In low light, there’s reduced dynamic range, meaning there are little to no details visible in the shadows. Noise is under control, but just like the daylight captures, it comes at the cost of horribly reduced resolved detail.
Vivo V50 super macro camera sample (tap image to expand)
The same camera is also in charge of macro photos and can be accessed through the Super Macro mode. And this is where the ultrawide camera makes itself a bit more useful. It does a decent job of snapping macro photos, letting you get really close to your subject, but the images lack resolved details. In short, they appear fine until you zoom in and check for detail, where you are greeted by an oversharpened mess. The primary camera lets you get about 10-15cm away from the subject, but its shallow depth of field means the fall-off is a bit excessive, leaving a very small patch to focus on.
Vivo V50 daylight camera samples. Top: 1X (primary camera), Middle: 2X (digital zoom), Bottom: 2X (digital zoom) (tap images to expand)
The primary camera, too, does an average job when snapping photos under daylight. The dynamic range and colours are fine, but the captures are low on resolved detail and sharpness. Shooting at 2X digital zoom sees better and sharper output, resulting in usable photos when snapped in daylight. However, in low light or under artificial light, the resolved detail is a little lower, leading to photos that appear flat. This also applies to the Portrait mode.
Vivo V50 low-light camera samples (tap images to expand)
The main camera’s low-light images are surprisingly good. They come out sharp and clear, packing good detail and dynamic range. This is probably down to the camera’s Night mode imaging algorithms, which also take a bit of time to process once an image has been captured, making you wait for a few seconds until you can capture the next shot.
Selfies in low light (pictured) come out really well, thanks to the Aura ring light. Daylight selfies are also sharp and pack in good detail with good edge-detection (tap image to expand)
Videos recorded at 1080p at 30fps come out a bit soft but have good colour and stabilisation. 4K 30fps videos are also well stabilised but only manage a marginal improvement in terms of detail. Videos captured from the selfie camera have blown-out backgrounds when shooting in bright outdoor environments, so it’s best avoided.
In low light, 1080p video recordings appear a bit too soft and lack both detail and dynamic range. 4K footage manages better detail along with good stabilisation. Things are far from ideal, as there’s visible noise, and dynamic range isn’t handled well, with blown-out highlights in bright areas and missing details in the darker patches when shooting street-lit scenes.
Vivo V50 Battery: Downright impressive!
Battery capacity – 6,000mAh
Wired charging – 90W
Wireless charging – NA
The Vivo V50’s battery easily lasted me well over a day with casual use and mixed connectivity, which includes staying connected to 5G and Wi-Fi networks. Indeed, battery life is not an issue with this phone, whether you are a casual user who just scrolls through social media apps or a power user who is constantly on calls, switching between several apps, including camera usage and gaming.
The Vivo V50 measures just 7.5mm at its thinnest point but somehow has a 6,000mAh battery stuffed inside.
In our standard battery video loop test, the phone managed a solid score of 29 hours and 12 minutes, which is impressive even for a mid-ranger. Charging is also surprisingly fast (for a device with a 6,000mAh battery), with the Vivo V50 managing a 56 percent charge in 30 minutes and 81 percent in one hour, completing the charging just 5 minutes later.
Vivo V50 Verdict
Vivo’s abnormally quick product release cycle for its V series makes it obvious that many may hold off on upgrading to the new V50 despite its advancements over the V40 released last year. Given last year’s release schedule, we can expect a Vivo V60 to be launched in the next 5 months, well before the year ends. Even if the upgrades are minor, they will still matter because we expect the pricing to stay the same.
We have nobody but Vivo to blame for this conundrum. Those who own a Vivo V20 can now finally upgrade to the V50, which offers a big jump in overall performance. Vivo V30 upgrades also benefit from improved battery life and a better set of cameras.
If a sleek design and battery life matter most to you, then the Vivo V50 is a good choice for the average consumer. But if performance matters, then you are better off with devices like Realme’s GT 6 (Review), which is priced a wee bit higher, or even the Poco F6 (Review) that’s priced a lot lower than the V50. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 14 Pro+ (Review) is also a solid contender (at a much lower price), as it offers better battery life than the Vivo V50.

US Secret Service agent during Kennedy assassination dies aged 93
US Secret Service agent during Kennedy assassination dies aged 93
A US Secret Service agent who leapt on to John F Kennedy’s limousine as it came under fire in Dallas, and was pictured in famous photos of one of the most dramatic events in US history, has died at the age of 93.
Clint Hill later became a bestselling author, but was haunted for decades by guilt over Kennedy’s assassination.
Hill died at his home on California on Friday, according to a statement from his publicist.
On 22 November 1963, he was assigned to protect the president’s wife, Jacqueline Kennedy.
Hill was riding on a car behind the Kennedy limousine when the first shot rang out.
He immediately rushed towards the couple and started to climb on to the back of the limousine as the shooting continued.
Hill’s actions during the assassination were captured on the Zapruder film – an amateur home video that provided one of the best recordings of the shooting.
Hill, originally from North Dakota, served in the Army prior to joining the Secret Service in 1958.
He was given an award for his actions in Dallas and eventually rose to become assistant director of the Secret Service.
However the trauma he experienced during the assassination led him to retire early from the agency in 1975, at the age of 43.
He had become convinced that he could have saved Kennedy’s life and shortly after his retirement told CBS 60 Minutes that he felt responsible.
“If I had reacted about five-tenths of a second faster, maybe a second faster, I wouldn’t be here today,” Hill said.
“You mean you would have gotten there and you would have taken the shot?” asked interviewer Mike Wallace.
“Yes, sir… That would have been fine with me,” Hill responded.
“I have a great deal of guilt about that,” he said. “Had I turned in a different direction, I’d have made it. It’s my fault.”
As the years went by, the former Secret Service agent later told a documentary, he returned to Dallas, eventually coming to the conclusion he could not have saved Kennedy’s life.
Hill met journalist Lisa McCubbin in 2009 and collaborated on a bestselling memoir, Mrs Kennedy and Me.
It was the first of a series of books and Hill and McCubbin fell in love. The couple married in 2021.
A statement from his publisher said that Hill had died at home with his wife at his side. A cause of death was not given.

Indonesia’s Attorney General’s Office has arrested three executives at units of state-owned energy firm Pertamina on charges of alleged corruption related to oil imports that cost the state $12 billion, a senior official said.
Late on Monday, prosecutors arrested Riva Siahaan, CEO of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Yoki Firnandi, CEO of Pertamina International Shipping, and Sani Dinar Saifuddin, a director at Kilang Pertamina Internasional, Abdul Qohar, director of special crimes at the Attorney General’s office, told reporters.
Pertamina said in a statement on Tuesday that it respected the ongoing legal process by Attorney General’s Office.
“Pertamina is ready to cooperate with the authorities and hopes the legal process runs well and prioritises the presumption of innocence.”
Abdul said that between 2018 and 2023 the three were alleged to have violated a government regulation for Pertamina to source crude oil from domestic suppliers, and had colluded to justify crude oil and fuel imports.
He said the executives had said the crude oil from contractors operating in Indonesia did not meet their standards.
“But the fact was the specification matched,” Abdul said.
Crude oil produced by contractors was exported, while Kilang Pertamina Internasional and Pertamina Patra Niaga imported crude oil and fuel with “significantly higher prices”, the prosecutor said, with losses to the state put at 193.7 trillion rupiah ($12 billion).
Pertamina Patra Niaga is a unit in charge of retail sales and fuel imports at the state energy firm. Kilang Pertamina International processes crude oil and condensate into refined products.
The Attorney General’s office said Pertamina International Shipping had marked up shipping fees.
Three other people from private companies were also arrested in the case, the office said.

What’s behind the ‘Feb. 28 economic blackout’
What’s behind the ‘Feb. 28 economic blackout’
A grassroots organization is calling on Americans to participate in what it’s calling the “Feb. 28 economic blackout” by refraining from buying goods from major retailers for 24 hours.
The nationwide protest comes amid rising prices on everything from gas to groceries — including, notably, eggs — and is similar to social media-fueled economic efforts that have cropped up online in recent months, including the “No Buy 2025” challenge against overconsumption.
Who’s behind the Feb. 28 blackout?
The Feb. 28 boycott is an initiative by the People’s Union USA, a self-described “grassroots movement dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability and corporate reform.”
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
The group, founded by John Schwarz, says it is not affiliated with any political party. According to the organization’s website, its goal is “to unite Americans against the corruption and greed that has kept us struggling for decades.”
The daylong boycott has been promoted online by several celebrities, including John Leguizamo, Stephen King and Bette Midler.
What’s the goal of the boycott?
“For our entire lives, they have told us we have no choice, that this is just how things are, that we have to accept these insane prices, the corporate greed, the billionaire tax breaks, all while we struggle just to get by,” Schwarz said in a recent Instagram video. “For one day, we are going to finally turn the tables.”‘
According to Schwarz, the idea is to halt all purchases from big corporations, both in store and online, from 12 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
“No Amazon, no Walmart, no fast food, no gas,” he said. “Not a single unnecessary dollar spent.”
What about medicine or emergency supplies?
On its website, the group is urging consumers to not spend money on “non-essential” items.
For essential purchases like food, medicine, or emergency supplies, Schwarz is encouraging participants to buy them from a local small business rather than a big-box retailer.
“Do not go out and shop at any big, major store,” Schwarz said in the video. “If you have to, go to the local pizza place, the small local boutique.”
Blackout targets all major retailers
Amazon packages on a conveyor belt. (Ross D. Franklin/AP/File)
Some supporters of the blackout have suggested boycotting specific corporations that have ended their diversity, equity and inclusion programs following President Trump’s executive order targeting DEI initiatives. But while the People’s Union calls the abandonment of DEI programs “regressive and unacceptable,” the Feb. 28 boycott is aimed at all major retailers, regardless of their stance on DEI.
“If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message,” the organization said on its website.
What happens after Feb. 28?
Schwarz told USA Today earlier this month that he hopes to boycott other businesses “that are really the biggest offenders within the system.”
The People’s Union is already planning weeklong blackouts aimed at specific retailers, including Amazon, Target and Walmart.
The first, targeting Amazon, is scheduled to begin March 7.
