  2. Woman who admitted killing previous partner is on the run after fatal stabbing of firefighter wife Woman who admitted killing previous partner is on the run after fatal stabbing of firefighter wife A California woman who admitted killing her estranged husband more than two decades ago and is now wanted in the fatal stabbing of her wife is being sought by federal authorities, a law enforcement official said Monday. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force is trying to locate and arrest Yolanda Marodi, 53, in connection with the fatal stabbing last week of Rebecca Marodi, 49, who was a captain with the state’s wildland fire agency, San Diego Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Krugh said in an email. Rebecca Marodi was found with multiple stab wounds on Feb. 17 at her home in Ramona, northeast of San Diego, the department has said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A possible motive in the killing remains unclear. Rebecca Marodi worked for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for more than three decades, beginning as a volunteer firefighter in 1993 in an area east of Los Angeles, the agency said. She was promoted to captain in 2022. Cal Fire Captain, Rebecca Marodi. She had been married to Yolanda Marodi for a little over two years, NBC San Diego reported. A photo on Rebecca Marodi’s Facebook page showed them together at a cidery on Yolanda Marodi’s birthday in December. Yolanda Marodi previously admitted to killing her estranged husband, James Olejniczak, in October 2000, according to NBC San Diego. Citing divorce records filed months before the death, the station reported Monday that she had sought custody of the couple’s children and claimed irreconcilable differences as the reason for their divorce. Court records show Yolanda Marodi, then known as Yolanda Olejniczak, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2004 and was sentenced to 13 years in prison on that charge and for possession of paraphernalia, drugs or alcohol in jail, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. She was released in 2013 and remained on parole until 2015, according to the spokesperson. 4. Trump threats dominate Liberal leadership debate in Canada Trump threats dominate Liberal leadership debate in Canada Nadine Yousif BBC News, Toronto Getty Images Candidates vying for Liberal Party leadership pose before Monday’s debate Candidates vying to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada faced each other for the first time on Monday in a French-language debate. The stage was shared by four hopefuls: former governor of the banks of Canada and England Mark Carney, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Liberal government House leader Karina Gould, and businessman and former MP Frank Baylis. The question of how to deal with Donald Trump dominated the first half, as the US president has repeatedly threatened to tariff Canada and make it the “51st state.” Candidates also answered questions about domestic matters like immigration, healthcare and the high cost of living. Early in the debate, Freeland – whose resignation as finance minister in December triggered the collapse of Trudeau’s leadership – stated that Trump represented “the greatest threat to Canada since World War Two”. She frequently drew on her experience in government, saying that she had successfully faced Trump during his first term when she helped renegotiate North America’s longstanding free-trade agreement. But Freeland warned that Trump’s second term might be worse for Canada. “He wants to turn Canada into the 51st state, and it’s no joke,” she said. “That is why he is supporting [Russian President] Vladimir Putin’s criminal attempt to redraw Ukraine’s borders.” “Trump wants to redraw our borders too,” Freeland said. To counter these threats, Freeland and the other candidates suggested strengthening trade ties with the EU and the ***. Baylis proposed a “new economic bloc” consisting of Canada, the ***, New Zealand and Australia, noting that all four countries shared the same values, cultures and governing systems. Carney, who is frontrunner in the polls, focused his message on helping Canada achieve economic prosperity. He proposed doing so by leveraging its resources, including critical minerals and metals, as well as making Canada a “superpower of clean energy” and removing trade barriers between provinces. He, too, agreed with Freeland that Trump’s second term was different from the first. “He is more isolationist. He is more aggressive,” Carney said. “In the past he wanted our markets. Now he wants our country.” He added that he would be in favour of imposing dollar-for-dollar tariffs on the US should Trump move ahead with his threat to levy a 25% tax on all ********* goods starting on 4 March. Getty Images Freeland and Carney both warned that Trump’s second term poses a greater threat to Canada than his first Gould, the youngest candidate on the stage, positioned herself as the candidate “for today and the future”, with a message that homed in on how a Liberal Party under her leadership would work to make life more affordable for Canadians. The candidates also addressed shifting US policy on Ukraine. As the four debated, Trudeau was in Kyiv marking three years since the Russia-Ukraine war began. All four candidates agreed that Canada should continue supporting Ukraine. Freeland suggested that money seized from Russia through sanctions be redistributed to help Ukraine’s war effort, while Carney stated that any discussion on Ukraine’s future could not happen without the Ukrainians at the table. Freeland also suggested that Canada should foster closer ties with Denmark which, she noted. was also facing threats from Trump who has signalled his desire to take over Greenland – a Danish territory. For the second half of the debate, candidates offered up their ideas for how to help Canada reduce its federal budget deficit, tackle crime and increase its military spending. They were also asked about climate change, with both Freeland and Carney saying they no longer supported a carbon tax on consumers – a key climate policy of the Trudeau government that has become unpopular with Canadians. At certain points, candidates also took aim at Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, saying he would be unfit to defend Canada against Trump. Poilievre is currently leading in the national polls, though the gap between him and the Liberal Party has narrowed since Trudeau’s resignation. The Conservative leader has since focused his attacks on Carney, arguing that a Liberal Party under his leadership would not be different from that under Trudeau. Monday’s debate is the first of two, with a second, English-language debate slated for Tuesday. Liberal Party members will vote for their next leader on 9 March, after which Trudeau is expected to step down. The French-language debate is especially important for Francophone Canadians in Quebec, whose votes are influential in helping decide which party will form Canada’s next government. Whoever is elected as leader would become Canada’s next prime minister until the next general election, which must be held on or before 20 October. 6. Clint Hill, Secret Service agent who leaped onto JFK’s car after the president was shot, dies at 93 Clint Hill, Secret Service agent who leaped onto JFK’s car after the president was shot, dies at 93 Clint Hill, the Secret Service agent who leaped onto the back of President John F. Kennedy’s limousine after the president was shot, then was forced to retire early because he remained haunted by memories of the assassination, has died. He was 93. Hill died Friday at his home in Belvedere, California, according to his publisher, Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. A cause of death was not given. Although few may recognize his name, the footage of Hill, captured on Abraham Zapruder’s chilling home movie of the assassination, provided some of the most indelible images of Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Hill received Secret Service awards and was promoted for his actions that day, but for decades blamed himself for Kennedy’s death, saying he didn’t react quickly enough and would gladly have given his life to save the president. “If I had reacted just a little bit quicker. And I could have, I guess,” a weeping Hill told Mike Wallace on CBS’ 60 Minutes in 1975, shortly after he retired at age 43 at the urging of his doctors. “And I’ll live with that to my grave.” It was only in recent years that Hill said he was able to finally start putting the assassination behind him and accept what happened. On the day of the assassination, Hill was assigned to protect first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, and was riding on the left running board of the follow-up car directly behind the presidential limousine as it made its way through Dealey Plaza. Hill told the Warren Commission that he reacted after hearing a shot and seeing the president slump in his seat. The president was struck by a fatal headshot before Hill was able to make it to the limousine. Zapruder’s film captured Hill as he leaped from the Secret Service car, grabbed a handle on the limousine’s trunk and pulled himself onto it as the driver accelerated. He forced Mrs. Kennedy, who had crawled onto the trunk, back into her seat as the limousine sped off. Hill later became the agent in charge of the White House protective detail and eventually an assistant director of the Secret Service, retiring because of what he characterized as deep depression and recurring memories of the assassination. The 1993 Clint Eastwood thriller “In the Line of Fire,” about a former Secret Service agent scarred by the JFK assassination, was inspired in part by Hill. Hill was born in 1932 and grew up in Washburn, North Dakota. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, served in the Army and worked as a railroad agent before joining the Secret Service in 1958. He worked in the agency’s Denver office for about a year, before joining the elite group of agents assigned to protect the president and first family. Since his retirement, Hill has spoken publicly about the assassination only a handful of times, but the most poignant was his 1975 interview with Wallace, during which Hill broke down several times. “If I had reacted about five-tenths of a second faster, maybe a second faster, I wouldn’t be here today,” Hill said. “You mean you would have gotten there and you would have taken the shot?” Wallace asked. “The third shot, yes, sir,” Hill said. “And that would have been all right with you?” “That would have been fine with me,” Hill responded. In his 2005 memoir, “Between You and Me,” Wallace recalled his interview with Hill as one of the most moving of his career. In 2006, Wallace and Hill reunited on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” where Hill credited that first 60 Minutes interview with helping him finally start the healing process. “I have to thank Mike for asking me to do that interview and then thank him more because he’s what caused me to finally come to terms with things and bring the emotions out where they surfaced,” he said. “It was because of his questions and the things he asked that I started to recover.” Decades after the assassination, Hill co-authored several books — including “Mrs. Kennedy and Me” and “Five Presidents” — about his Secret Service years with Lisa McCubbin Hill, whom he married in 2021. “We had that once-in-a-lifetime love that everyone hopes for,” McCubbin Hill said in a statement. “We were soulmates.” Clint Hill also became a speaker and gave interviews about his experience in Dallas. In 2018, he was given the state of North Dakota’s highest civilian honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award. A portrait of Hill adorns a Capitol gallery of fellow honorees. 9. SpaceX says Starship self-destructed after propellant leaks caused fires and comms blackout SpaceX says Starship self-destructed after propellant leaks caused fires and comms blackout SpaceX said Monday that last month’s Starship explosion was brought on by a cascading series of events caused by propellant leaks — a problem the company says has been addressed ahead of an eighth test flight that could happen as early as Friday. The spaceflight company is still waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to either officially close the “mishap investigation” into the explosion, or specially authorize SpaceX to perform the flight while the investigation continues. This is, notably, the first time SpaceX has been subjected to a mishap investigation while CEO Elon Musk is operating inside the United States government, with workers from his so-called Department of Government Efficiency actively making changes at the FAA. The agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment. SpaceX’s January test of Starship started off fine enough. The company was hoping to test out a number of upgrades to the Super Heavy booster, the launch-and-catch tower, and on Starship itself. The heavy-lift rocket system launched without any problem and headed off to space, with the booster eventually separating and coming back down to the ground in Texas where it was caught by the tower. The problems started about two minutes after Starship ignited its own rocket engines to get to orbit. The company wrote in a blog post that “a flash was observed in the aft section of the vehicle near one of the Raptor vacuum engines.” Sensors onboard the ship started picking up a rise in pressure after the flash “indicative of a leak” of propellant, according to SpaceX. Another flash was seen two minutes later, and SpaceX says “sustained fires” began in that section of Starship due to the leaks. The fires caused “all but one of Starship’s engines to execute controlled shut down sequences and ultimately led to a loss of communication with the ship.” SpaceX says the leaks were most likely caused by vibrations that exceeded what the company expected from testing, “which led to increased stress on hardware in the propulsion system.” The automatic in-flight abort system eventually triggered the destruction of the ship following the fires and communications blackout. That explosion led to a spectacular display over the islands of Turks and Caicos, and also resulted in the FAA diverting a number of flights to avoid any danger. SpaceX claims that all of the Starship debris “came down within the pre-planned Debris Response Area” — a sort of safe-zone that it typically negotiates ahead of flights with government agencies. Residents have been posting photos of debris washing up on beaches and at least one vehicle was struck, receiving minor damage. SpaceX says it has made changes to the lines that send fuel to Starship’s engines, tweaked the temperature of the propellant, and has added extra vents and “a new purge system” to make the aft section in question “more robust to propellant leakage.” Source link #SpaceX #Starship #selfdestructed #propellant #leaks #caused #fires #comms #blackout Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  11. Infini pumps up uranium prospects with ********* land grab Infini pumps up uranium prospects with ********* land grab Infini Resources has expanded its uranium footprint in Canada’s renowned Athabasca Basin with a total land grab of 931 square kilometres across two promising projects, both within about 100km of world-class super high-grade uranium mines. The binding agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the Reynolds and Boulding Lake projects significantly increases Infini’s landholdings in the premier global uranium destination. The purchase aligns with Infini’s stated vision to be one of the most active exploration companies listed on the ASX and strengthens its position as a growing uranium-focused explorer. The Reynolds project comprises 677km2 and contains reported anomalous uranium in lake sediments and radiometric anomalies close to the underexplored Needle Falls shear zone. It is a shallow unconformity-style uranium exploration play in a premier jurisdiction distinguished by a regional fault, radioactive boulders along trend and numerous surface showings. Boulding Lake consists of 254km2 of ground adjacent to claims containing a plethora of radioactive boulders. A magnetic low, interpreted as basin sediments, indicates the project offers potential as a primary uranium source. It also indicates a south-west trending ice flow direction. Boulding Lake lies immediately west of Denison Mines Johnston Lake uranium project and is close to the world-beating Cigar Lake operating mine. Cigar Lake’s underground mine has total mineral reserves of 551,400 tonnes at an astonishing grade of 15.87pc uranium oxide – around 160,000 parts per million (ppm) – for 192.9 million pounds of the material, which is used in nuclear reactors to produce energy. The nearby high-grade McArthur River mine contains a whopping reserve of 2.49m tonnes at a superb 6.55pc uranium oxide for a total of 359.6m pounds. The opportunistic acquisition of the Reynolds and Boulding Lake properties provides Infini with a strategic foothold in the world-renowned Athabasca Basin. After extensive review by our team, we believe these assets have the potential to deliver substantial long-term value for our shareholders. The upfront consideration for the ********* land expansion is $1.6m consisting of issuing 2,622,378 fully paid ordinary shares at 57.2 cents per share, based on the 15-day volume-weighted-average-price, in addition to $100,000 cash plus $750,000 in performance rights subject to Infini meeting drill and resource milestones. The shares issued as part of the consideration were priced at a 36pc premium to the last closing price. The company plans to conduct geophysical surveys across both projects to generate targets for follow-up exploration activities. Armstrong said acquiring the two properties further strengthens the company’s exploration strategy, however, Infini’s Portland Creek project, on the ********* east coast, remains its prime focus. Portland Creek turned heads with lab busting assays that sent the share price skywards last year, ratcheting Infini to the top group of share price gainers last year. Infini is now eagerly awaiting the results of a maiden drilling program to follow up the phenomenal soil assays. Management says high-resolution magnetic imagery across its Tinco uranium and niobium project in northeastern Saskatchewan has also been received. It identified a major north-south trending shear zone, where an historical grab sample returned 600ppm and 0.5pc niobium oxide. A heliborne magnetic, radiometric and time-domain electromagnetic survey was completed and flown along a west/northwest orientation with lines spaced 100m apart. A total 1030 line kilometres were flown for the survey and leading consultant firm Southern Geoscience is currently processing the data. Infini anticipates generating targets for follow-up as part of its future exploration plans. The Athabasca Basin, east of Tinco in Saskatchewan, is regarded as the world’s premium location for uranium deposits. It spans 100,000km2 and is home to a host of projects, including some of the globe’s leading super high-grade operations such as the Cigar Lake and McArthur River mines. Infini will be hoping its latest land additions can add to the company’s stable of highly prospective projects corresponding to the expected increase in demand for uranium over the coming years to meet the global push for a cleaner energy source. 19. Low Levels Of This Vitamin Were Just Linked To Dementia. Are You Getting Enough? Low Levels Of This Vitamin Were Just Linked To Dementia. Are You Getting Enough? “Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.” While vitamin B12 might not be as buzzy as calcium or an immediately recognizable household name like Vitamin C or D, it’s just as important for your health—and particularly your brain health. This water-soluble vitamin plays a role in a whole bunch of processes in your body, helping produce your DNA, red blood cells, and generate energy, among other things. But new research suggests we may not be getting enough B12, which could actually raise your risk of developing dementia in the future. Here’s what neurologists and a dietitian want you know about Vitamin B12, plus its potential impact on your current and future brain health. Meet the experts: Amit Sachdev, MD, MS, medical director in the Department of Neurology at Michigan State University; Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers; Clifford Segil, DO, neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA What did the study find? For the study, which was published in February in the Annals of Neurology, researchers recruited 231 healthy older people without dementia or mild cognitive impairment (which is considered a precursor to dementia). All of the participants had B12 levels in their blood that averaged 414.8 pmol/L, which is significantly above the established minimum level of 148 pmol/L (anything below this is considered “deficient,” the study explains). The researchers drilled down on the data to focus on a biologically active component of vitamin B12, which indicates the amount of B12 the body can actually use. They found that participants with lower active levels of B12 experienced slower processing speed and responded slower to visual stimuli, which suggests that they had slower visual processing speed and slower electrical impulses in the brain. These impacts became even more apparent in older participants. During participant MRIs, researchers found that those with lower levels of B12 had a more lesions on their brain’s white matter, which may be linked to dementia and cognitive decline. The study concluded that the findings should “challenge” current B12 recommendations. What are current B12 recommendations? The current recommended intake for B12 varies by age and depends on whether you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. However, most adults aged 19 and up are told to aim to get 2.4 micrograms of B12 a day, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). (If you’re pregnant, that increases to 2.6 micrograms, while breastfeeding raises it to 2.8 micrograms.) But as the study points out, this may not actually be sufficient to protect brain health. What is the ideal B12 range to aim for? The study doesn’t say what recommended B12 levels should be, just that its possible some people aren’t getting enough, and that more research is needed in this area to figure out optimal levels. Right now, the best way to know if you’re hitting a good B12 range for your body is to get a blood test, says Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers. The cut-off between normal and deficient vitamin B12 blood levels varies by lab, but anything lower than 200 or 250 pg/mL is usually considered deficient, according to the NIH. However, there are other markers that can suggest you’re low in B12, so it’s really best to talk to your healthcare provider about your results if you get tested. Cording points out that some healthcare providers will say you’re levels are good, even if you’re on the low end of the “normal” range. “I like to see people in the middle of the range with labs for B12,” she says. “There’s ‘normal’ and then there’s ‘optimal.’” Someone within “normal” B12 limits, might do fine with taking their B12 in a multivitamin, Cording says. “If they have a noted deficiency, I might put them on a higher dose—500 micrograms or 1000 micrograms—and see how they feel.” How does B12 help brain function? B12 does a few different things in the brain. For one, it helps turn sugar into energy. “Our brains run on sugar. Vitamin B12 is important for processing that sugar into energy,” explains Amit Sachdev, MD, MS, medical director in the Department of Neurology at Michigan State University. “Low B12 levels can lead to mental fog.” B12 is also needed for optimal cell function and red blood cell formation, Cording points out. “All of these things can impact cognition,” she adds. Cording says she’ll often recommend that patients have their B12 levels tested if they’re feeling slower than usual, tired, or feeling down and they don’t know why. Symptoms of low B12 levels can also mimic signs of dementia. “I check a B12 level in all the patients I see with memory loss,” says Clifford Segil, DO, neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. Segil also says that B12 is “great for general health and it does help to give people energy.” Segil says that more research is needed, but is in support of the new findings. “An intervention that involves better nutrition is something that every neurologist would like to focus on,” he says. Can I get B12 from my regular diet? Yup, you can get B12 in your diet. These foods have higher levels of B12, per the NIH: Beef liver, 70.7 micrograms Nutritional yeast, 8.3 to 24 micrograms Dairy products and some breakfast cereals also contain B12, but “it’s primarily in animal products,” Cording says. What kind of B12 supplements are best? If you’re considering going on a B12 supplement, it’s a good idea to check in with a healthcare provider first. “A lab test is always a great place to start, because then you know how high the dose should be,” Cording says. Most people do well with a capsule, but you can also get B12 in a tablet that dissolves under your tongue, she says. If you have trouble absorbing B12, you may need to get an infusion via IV. But, again, if you suspect that low levels of B12 are an issue, talk to your healthcare provider. They can do a thorough check to see what could be behind your symptoms and figure out next steps from there.
