Kookaburras beat Belgium, Hockeyroos lose in Pro League
Kookaburras beat Belgium, Hockeyroos lose in Pro League
The Kookaburras have snapped their two-game losing run, powering past Belgium 3-1 in Argentina.
Jack Welch opened the scoring for the *********** men’s hockey team, before Nathan Ephraums and Cooper Burns added goals in their final Santiago del Estero game on Tuesday (AEDT).
It is the Kookaburras’ first FIH Pro League win over the Europeans since 2019, denying the world No.2 the opportunity to rise to top spot in the standings.
The Hockeyroos did not enjoy the same dominance in the late game, falling 3-2 to Belgium’s women to extend their losing streak to five.
Australia’s men, the reigning Pro League champions, leave Argentina fifth on the table after bouncing back from a 1-0 defeat to the host nation the previous day.
Mark Hager’s side had also suffered a frustrating 4-3 penalty shootout defeat, after drawing 2-2, in their first match against Belgium.
Australia found their way through a stubborn Belgian defence via Welch late in the first quarter before Emphraums converted a penalty corner in the second.
Rising Kookaburras star Burns put the result to bed in the third when Campbell Geddes sent a rocket at keeper Loic van Doren and Burns pounced on the rebound.
Nicolas de Kerpel slotted a consolation in the final term to deny Australia a clean sheet.
“We definitely didn’t want to end the tour on a loss,” Kookaburra Tim Brand said.
“Yesterday definitely wasn’t our best against Argentina.
“Much better performance (against Belgium) and very happy with the win.”
The Hockeyroos remain sixth on the women’s ladder after their fifth defeat.
They were stunned by Belgium’s Ambre Ballenghien just seconds after the opening whistle.
Ballenghien almost bagged another at the end of the first quarter but was denied after the video referee found she used the back of her stick.
Belgium did extend their lead after Alix Gerniers and Stephanie Vanden Borre made the most out of two penalty corners before halftime.
Mariah Williams reduced the deficit after ****** converting a penalty stroke in the third quarter.
Courtney Schonell added another but the Hockeyroos could not find the equaliser in the final five minutes.
“We haven’t had a game where we’ve been able to put out 100 per cent on the pitch for the whole 60 minutes,” Hockeyroo Rebecca Greiner said.
“However, I do think we’ve stepped up between each game.
“Look, we didn’t come away with any wins but we’ve got to leave with our heads held high.”
The Hockeyroos return to Pro League action on June 7 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen, while the Kookaburras take on India on June 14 in Belgium.

Victims of LA wildfires who lost their homes are looking to relocate. Here are the top cities they’re looking at
Victims of LA wildfires who lost their homes are looking to relocate. Here are the top cities they’re looking at
The wildfires that ripped through Los Angeles in early 2025 were among the most devastating the region had ever seen.
Data from UCLA Anderson School of Management reveals that property and capital losses from the fires could range upwards of $164 billion, with insured losses at an estimated $75 billion.
Don’t miss
As of early February, it was estimated that the wildfires destroyed more than 16,240 properties, including residential homes and commercial buildings. The Palisades Fire destroyed 6,822 properties in the Malibu and Pacific Palisades communities and the Eaton Fire razed 9,418.
While some homeowners may be looking to rebuild in their communities once the dust settles, others — particularly the wealthy — are looking elsewhere.
Where well-off LA wildfire victims are headed
Celebrity real estate agent Josh Altman of “Million Dollar Listing” fame says he believes 70% of Palisades residents will not return to that community in the wake of the fires. His wealthier clients can afford to relocate.
Many of his Palisades clients ready to move want to stay in California and are looking at high-priced properties in:
With the exception of Newport Beach, all of these are relatively close to the Palisades area, so Altman’s clients may want to maintain a semblance of familiarity. They are among the privileged clientele who can afford to do so.
Zillow put the average Santa Monica home value at $1,673,029. For Beverly Hills, it’s $3,453,888. In Brentwood, it’s $2,758,838. In Newport Beach, it’s $3,321,652. And Bel Air has the highest average home value at $3,855,639.
The danger of these communities is that they are still in Los Angeles County, which is at ongoing risk of wildfires.
However, they may be somewhat safer options than the Palisades, where homes were destroyed because they were located near brush and vegetation. Moving away from that area does mitigate the risk of wildfires somewhat.
In contrast, some of Altman’s clients are looking to leave California entirely and move to Scottsdale or Las Vegas. They’re also looking at lower property costs.
Read more: Jamie Dimon issues a warning about the US stock market — says prices are ‘kind of inflated.’ Crashproof your portfolio with these 3 rock-solid strategies
The average home in Scottsdale, AZ costs $827,308. In Las Vegas, it’s a more reasonable $425,474. So that may be a destination for displaced wildfire victims who aren’t loaded with money.
Why rebuilding may not be an option
For homeowners of modest means, rebuilding may not be an option due to lack of insurance. Between 2020 and 2022, California insurers declined to renew 2.8 million homeowners policies, of which 531,000 were in Los Angeles County.
The Standford Daily reports that more than 100,000 Californians lost access to private homeowner insurance, affecting one in seven homeowners in the Palisades.
Even homeowners who have insurance may not be able to rebuild in their communities. Amy Bach, executive director of the nonprofit consumer advocacy group United Policyholders, told CNBC that two-thirds of LA wildfire victims or more are underinsured. And if their insurance won’t cover the full cost of rebuilding, they might have to go someplace where it’s cheaper to buy or build a home.
For those who can afford to rebuild in the Palisades, experts warn that the process could take years due to the region’s hilly, rocky terrain. It will take time to collect and remove toxic materials on the surface. Meanwhile toxins, ash and debris from the wildfires seep into the earth and contaminate the water system.
“It will probably take months until communities have reliable drinking water again,” says Thomas Young, a civil and environmental engineering professor at the University of California, Davis.
On top of financial and logistical barriers to rebuilding, the psychological toll of the fires may be driving people to relocate instead of rebuilding in the Palisades.
It could take survivors a long time to recover from that trauma. A fresh start somewhere else may not only be a more affordable and safe option, but a preferable one from a mental health perspective.

I tried ChatGPT’s Dall-E 3 image generator and these 5 tips will help you get the most from your AI creations
I tried ChatGPT’s Dall-E 3 image generator and these 5 tips will help you get the most from your AI creations
If you use ChatGPT much, you’ve likely experimented with DALL-E 3, OpenAI’s latest iteration of an AI image generator. DALL-E 3 can be shockingly good at bringing your ideas to life but sometimes shockingly bad at understanding certain details or just shocking in what it chooses to emphasize. Still, if you want to see a specific scene move from your head to your screen, DALL-E 3 is usually pretty helpful, it can even make hands write.
But here’s the thing, DALL-E 3 is still an AI model, not a mind reader. If you want images that actually look like what you’re imagining, you need to learn how to speak its language.
After some trial and error (and a few unintentional horrors), I’ve become fairly adept at speaking its language. So here are five key tips that will help you do the same.
Polish in HD
DALL-E 3 has a quality mode called ‘hd,’ which makes images look sharper and more detailed. Think of it like adding a high-end camera lens to your AI-generated art – textures look richer, lighting is more refined, and things like fabric, fur, and reflections have more depth.
Check out how it looks in this prompt: “A rendering of a close-up shot of a butterfly resting on a sunflower. Quality: hd.”
(Image credit: Image created with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3)
Play with aspect ratio
Not every image has to be a square. DALL-E 3 lets you set the aspect ratios, which may seem minor but can be huge if you want to make something look more cinematic or like a portrait.
Square is fine, but why limit yourself when you can make something epic? This is especially useful for social media graphics and posters, like the one below, which had the prompt: “A vertical poster of a vintage travel advertisement for Paris, size 1024×1792 pixels.”
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
(Image credit: Image created with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3)
Think like a film director
To get an image capable of evoking emotion, sometimes it helps to think like you’re a photographer in the real world. Think about camera angle or composition techniques; look them up if necessary. The result can dramatically change how an image looks.
Instead of a flat, dead-on image, you can request angles like close-up, bird’s-eye view, or over-the-shoulder. The same goes for composition styles and terms like ‘symmetrical composition’ or ‘depth of field.’
That’s how you can get the following image from this prompt: “A dramatic over-the-shoulder shot of a lone cowboy standing on a rocky cliff, gazing at the vast desert landscape below. The sun sets in the distance, casting long shadows across the canyon. The cowboy’s silhouette is sharp against the golden sky, evoking a cinematic Western feel.”
(Image credit: Image created with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3)
Iterate, iterate, iterate
One of DALL-E 3’s lesser-known but highly effective tricks is telling it what not to include. This helps avoid unwanted elements in your image. That might mean specifying negative elements like colors, objects, or styles you don’t want or refining the style and mood by what you don’t want it to feel like.
That’s how I got the image below, using the prompt: “A peaceful park in autumn with a young woman sitting on a wooden bench, reading a book. Golden leaves cover the ground, and a soft breeze rustles the trees. No other people, no litter, just a quiet, serene moment in nature.”
(Image credit: Image created with OpenAI’s DALL-E 3)
Be overly specific
Think of DALL-E 3 as a very literal genie: it gives you exactly what you ask for, no more, no less. So if you type in “a dog,” don’t be surprised when it spits out a random dog of indeterminate breed, vibe, or moral alignment. The more details you include – like breed, color, setting, mood, or even art style – the better the results.
As an example, You might start with: “A wizard casting a spell,” but you’d be better off submitting: “An elderly wizard with a long, braided white beard, dressed in emerald-green robes embroidered with gold runes, conjuring a swirling vortex of blue lightning from his fingertips in a stormy mountain landscape.” You can see both below.

Intel says new ASML machines are in production, with positive results
Intel says new ASML machines are in production, with positive results
By Stephen Nellis
SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) – Intel on Monday said that the first two cutting-edge lithography machines from ASML Holding are “in production” at its factories, with early data indicating they are more reliable than earlier models.
At a conference in San Jose, California, Intel senior principal engineer Steve Carson said Intel has produced 30,000 wafers, the large discs of silicon that can yield thousands of computing chips, in a single quarter with ASML’s high numerical aperture (NA) lithography machines.
Intel last year was the world’s first chipmaker to take delivery of the machines, which are expected to produce smaller and faster computing chips than earlier ASML machines. The move was a shift in strategy for Intel, which lagged rivals in adopting the previous generation of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines.
It took Intel seven years to put those earlier machines into full production, which contributed to it losing its lead to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Intel struggled with the reliability of those previous EUV models in the initial stages of production.
However, Carson said ASML’s new high NA machines are about twice as reliable as the earlier generation in initial testing.
“We’re getting wafers out at a consistent rate, and that’s a huge boon to the platform,” Carson said.
The new ASML machines, which print features onto chips using beams of light, can also do the same work as earlier machines using fewer exposures, saving time and money.
Carson said early results at Intel’s factories showed that the high NA machines can do what took earlier machines three exposures and about 40 processing steps with just one exposure and a “single digit” number of processing steps.
Intel has said it plans to use the high NA machines to help develop what it calls its 18A manufacturing technology, which is scheduled for mass production with a new generation of PC chip later this year.
It has said it plans to put the high NA machines into full production with its next generation of manufacturing technology called 14A, but has not given a mass production date for that technology.

Lansing City Council to take action against adult club
Lansing City Council to take action against adult club
LANSING, Mich.(WLNS) — City leaders say they’re fed up with the ongoing violence at a local gentleman’s club and are taking action to stop it.
Ryan Kost, president of the Lansing City Council, says Centerfolds, an adult entertainment club in south Lansing, has had a long history of issues and now looking to revoke the business’ cabaret license. Kost says the city attorney has already started the process and that while there have been many issues at the club over the years, this is the first time they’ve tried to revoke Centerfold’s license.
“Centerfolds has had a litany of issues over the last 20 years,” said Kost.
He says the act to revoke the club’s license comes after a recent shooting at the club.
“I think the shooting and the ******* was a big red flag for the city,” said Kost.
Last Sunday, 45-year-old Christopher Bonilla Sr. was shot and killed inside the club. In 2016, two people were shot, and in 2013, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed.
Kost says the city attorney is currently collecting information on the club. Then, city leaders will schedule a hearing, after which the city council will vote.
“We just received the city of attorney from the police chief all of the service calls that have been made to that location,” said Kost.
Kost says the city is putting the residents first, to ensure something like this won’t happen again.
“When something like this happens we take it seriously,” says Kost. “We take the safety of the folks in this neighborhood seriously.”
Lansing Police Department says they do not get called to Centerfolds frequently, but when they do respond to calls, officers are made aware of crimes that are happening that are going unreported.
6 News called and left a message to management at Centerfolds, but they haven’t called back.

Nine Entertainment flags $100m in cost cuts
Nine Entertainment flags $100m in cost cuts
Nine Entertainment has flagged a further $100m in cost cuts by the end of 2027, including restructuring staff, it said in its latest ASX announcement.
According to its half-year results, the company plans more restructuring as part of its “strategic and cultural transformation”.
Nine continues to be hampered by a weaker economy, soft advertising revenue and the impacts of losing Meta on its revenues.
Meta was previously paying *********** media companies collectively up to $100m to publish content, with the deal being scrapped in the new financial year. Following the announcement in July, Nine cut 200 staff.

“As Nine continues its strategic and cultural transformation, there is expected to be further restructuring into H2 FY25 and FY26,” Nine said in its half-yearly results.
“These changes will be designed to ensure Nine’s optimal positioning into the future while also maximising the efficiency of our cost base.
“At this stage, Nine expects further cost efficiencies through to the end of FY27 of more than $100m, of which $10-20m is expected to be realised in FY25, in addition to the previous guidance of $50m in FY25.”
The transformation follows allegations late last year that bosses in Nine’s broadcast division belittled, intimidated and ********* harassed staff members.
An independent review into Nine’s workplace practices and culture made 22 recommendations in a damning report.
Based on 934 Nine-wide staff survey responses, as well as 122 face-to-face interviews and written submissions, the review included confronting testimonies about the toxic culture of the company and a cover-up by HR when complaints were made.
Cost-cutting, including lay-offs, delivered $35m worth of efficiencies for the December half, and Nine said it would exceed its previous target of $50m in cost savings for the financial year.
The company said it posted a half-year net profit of $95m as revenue grew 1 per cent to $1.41bn.
Nine said it would be looking for opportunities to cut its cost base as well as lift its revenue.
Despite a revenue uptick, the company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell 15 per cent to $268m, with net profit after tax down to $95.1m, falling 29 per cent on this time last year.
Camera IconNine Entertainment chair Catherine West said the company ‘continued to perform well’. Credit: Channel 9
The group lowered its half-year dividend to 3.5c per share from 4c for the prior December half.
Nine’s chair Catherine West flagged strong results in a tough environment.
“In a challenging market environment, we have continued to perform well operationally while simultaneously strengthening our strategic position and implementing our cultural reset,” she said.
Earnings contribution from its real estate listings business Domain – the target of a takeover bid by US group CoStar – lifted to 15 per cent, with Nine saying it remains a key part of its long-term growth strategy.
Nine acting chief executive officer Matt Stanton said Nine continued to have a unique relationship with *********** audiences.
“Operationally, we were generally pleased with the performance of our portfolio in the half. In particular, at Stan, subscriber numbers exceeded our expectations, underpinning 16 per cent growth in EBITDA, while at publishing, digital subscription revenues at our mastheads grew by 15 per cent (ex the impact of Meta and Google), with the team also doing a great job with cost efficiencies offsetting much of the impact of the Meta withdrawal.”

Motorcycle group of about 100 lift San Leandro railroad crossing arm; passenger dies
Motorcycle group of about 100 lift San Leandro railroad crossing arm; passenger dies
The Brief
San Leandro police said that a motorcycle passenger who died on the tracks was part of a group of roughly 100 other motorcyclists who lifted a railroad crossing arm as a train was headed their way.
The motorcycle driver was injured, and his passenger died at the scene.
No one on board the train was injured, Amtrak said.
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. – San Leandro police said that a motorcycle passenger who died on the tracks was part of a group of roughly 100 other motorcyclists who lifted a railroad crossing arm as an oncoming train was headed their way.
Police said the group was traveling northbound on Hesperian Boulevard on Sunday at about 2 p.m. near Springlake Drive where there is a railroad crossing.
As the motorcyclists approached the tracks, police said the railroad arms came down for an oncoming Amtrak train traveling toward Oakland.
Members of the motorcycle group lifted the railroad crossing arms to allow riders through, police said.
One motorcyclist, who had a passenger on the bike as well, went through the crossing when it was struck by the train, police said.
The motorcyclist suffered critical injuries and was taken to the hospital; his female passenger was pronounced dead on scene, police said.
Both were wearing helmets.
Police did not say that this was some sort of scheduled event and did not have a name for the motorcycle group.
It’s also unclear what motivated the group to lift the railroad crossing arms.
In a statement, Amtrak said the train was traveling from San Jose to Sacramento when it came into contact with the motorcycle. None of the 71 passengers on board the train were injured.
Anyone with information should contact Traffic Unit Sergeant Ryan Gill at (510) 577-0446.

WA’s healthiest suburbs: Cambridge, Canning, Claremont, Cottesloe, Gosnells, Murray, Mosman Park, Nedlands
WA’s healthiest suburbs: Cambridge, Canning, Claremont, Cottesloe, Gosnells, Murray, Mosman Park, Nedlands
Cottesloe, Gosnells and Mosman Park were among the suburbs revealed as WA’s healthiest places to live in a recent study.
New research by insurance company AIA Australia uncovered the nation’s 45 healthiest local government areas.
The study revealed residents in these areas live up to eight years longer than the national average and visit public hospitals one-third less than the rest of the country for general admissions.
WA and South Australia both had nine local government areas on the list, followed by New South Wales with 13.
Cambridge, Canning, Claremont, Cottesloe, Gosnells, Murray, Mosman Park, Nedlands, and Perth were revealed as WA’s most physically and mentally healthy local government areas.
According to the report, the 45 healthiest zones also collectively save the public hospital system an estimated $371.4 million each year.
People in these areas are less likely to have a chronic condition or die from a “potentially avoidable death”.
The study found the median age of death of residents in the local government areas — referred to as “AIA Vitality Zones” — was 83.4 years compared to the national average of 75.2 years.
According to the study people living in the AIA vitality zones are 30 per cent less likely to report living with a long-term lung condition, 30 per cent less likely to report living with diabetes and 14 per cent less likely to report having kidney or heart disease.
AIA acknowledged a combination of socio-economic and positive lifestyle habits helped elevate the local government areas.
The research showed residents in these areas are more likely to engage in physical activity, prep nutritious meals at home, regularly visit a health care provider and connect with the community.
“Thirty-eight per cent of AIA Vitality Zone residents engage in moderate-intensity exercise (activities such as brisk walking, biking, or swimming that elevate the heart rate by over 50 per cent) three-to-four days per week — six percentage points higher than the national average,” the report said.
AIA Australia chief executive officer Damien Mu said the research results highlight the impact lifestyles have on health, quality of life and longevity.
“Residents in AIA Vitality Zones are not just living longer, but they are living healthier, meaning they can continue working and enjoy hobbies and time with family and friends,” Mr Mu added.
Factors such as socio-economic advantages, access to health care and education did impact the study.
The AIA report points out 37 out of the 45 local government areas had a socio-economic index (SEIFA) score of over 1,000.

Connecticut high school graduate can’t read or write. Who failed her?
Connecticut high school graduate can’t read or write. Who failed her?
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Hartford Public Schools graduate is taking legal action against the city, the Board of Education, and one of her special education teachers. Aleysha Ortiz claims she asked for educational resources and support for years, but that help never came.
Instead, she said she graduated without being able to read or write.
“My time in Hartford Public Schools was a time that I don’t wish upon anyone,” said Aleysha Ortiz, a graduate of Hartford Public Schools.
Ortiz moved from Puerto Rico to Connecticut, becoming a Hartford Public Schools student in the first grade. She struggled with a speech impediment, dyslexia, ADHD, and, initially, a language barrier.
“Every first day of school, I would tell the teacher I cannot read and write so please be patient for me, so everyone knew,” Ortiz told News 8.
Sitting down with News 8, Ortiz said she was bullied, harassed, and neglected by district employees.
“I would cry knowing the people who had big titles knew this was happening, and no one stepped up to do something about it,” Ortiz said.
She has filed a lawsuit against the Hartford Board of Education, City of Hartford, and one of her special education teachers, claiming her “learning disabilities were not properly addressed by the Board, and as a result, she continued to struggle academically.”
This specific complaint names Tilda Santiago, a special education case manager and teacher, who would allegedly “yell at, belittle, and humiliate [Ortiz] in front of other students and teachers.”
The lawsuit also stated, “Ortiz would frequently run to other teachers and/or administrators in tears and emotional distress.”
We contacted Santiago for a comment, who directed our request to the Board of Education’s staff attorney. We’re waiting to hear back.
Frustrated, Ortiz said she singlehandedly put in the work — dedicating most of her free time to school, listening back to audio recordings of her classes, and using technology (such as Talk-to-Text applications) to complete assignments.
“The first time getting an ‘A’ was very emotional,” Ortiz shared through tears. “Sometimes, I would fake an ‘A’; it was very emotional to know I earned that ‘A.’”
Ortiz was able to raise her grades, meet her credit requirements, and walk the stage with her fellow graduates. It was a moment filled with mixed emotions.
“It’s the treatment that she had to go through at the hands of several people, who were the adults in the room, who were supposed to be helping her,” said Anthony Spinella, the attorney representing Ortiz in this matter. “They really, really hurt her.”
We contacted the city and Board of Education, who told News 8 they can’t comment on ongoing litigation. The superintendent’s office also declined to comment.
Carol Gale, Hartford Federation of Teachers President, said she can’t speak on this specific lawsuit but thinks there needs to be a review of policy:
“It does give educators in Hartford pause to reflect on the sometimes conflicting goals to increase graduation rates while also maintaining high expectations consistent with what a high school diploma should mean.”
Ortiz wants to see change happen so that no other student will have to experience what she did.
“Education is so important and I believe we’ve forgotten the meaning of it,” Ortiz said. “I’m willing and determined to support students in need.”
Many have rallied around Ortiz, getting her the support she needs. She was accepted to UConn and wants to focus on special education policy and advocacy.
As for the lawsuit, they’re seeking an undisclosed amount in damages.
Another lawsuit, which was a special education due process complaint, has been resolved. Courtney Spencer, who represented Ortiz in this matter, called it one of the most “egregious” cases she’s ever come across:
“In the twenty-four years that I’ve been practicing special education law this is possibly one of the most egregious cases that I have come across. It is only due to her incredible resilience and spirit that Aleysha is able to be as strong as she is. She is a remarkable young lady. This truly is a symptom of a much larger problem in our state where the dyslexic population is incredibly underserved, and we are graduating many student students who are not able to read. I have no doubt that as Aleysha goes on with her college education and her career that she will truly change the way we look at reading in the state of Connecticut.”
In July 2024, Hartford’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Education was formed to evaluate data, engage with stakeholders, and create actionable strategies to enhance the city’s educational landscape. The Commission also established four specialized subcommittees, including Special Education.
The Commission recently released an action plan to ensure “all students have access to safe, welcoming schools and high-quality education.”
