This wasn’t a breakdown in encryption or a zero-day exploit. It was a simple, all-too-human mistake with potentially devastating consequences; a stark reminder of the high stakes involved in cyber security. Are encrypted platforms like Signal safe? Considering the design of the Signal messaging application and inherent security controls, the answer is yes. Encrypted messaging platforms are technically sound, offering state-of-the-art end-to-end encryption. However, encryption is not a substitute for judgment or process. These tools are vulnerable to misuse and abuse if contextual governance and user discipline are lacking. The assumption that secure tools ensure secure communication is dangerously misleading. Human error – misaddressing messages, mismanaging access, or misunderstanding context – can completely undermine even the strongest security frameworks. Even the best examples of secure design can fail when you add humans. Tools rarely break, but the trust and control around them often do. Consider this case study a caution and a call to action. Mistakes are inevitable, but systems can be designed to detect and minimise the impact of those errors. Communication security must be reframed as a human-centered challenge, where technical controls are complemented by cultural change and operational safeguards. Cyber security professionals who want to shape a human-centered approach to security should keep the following principles in mind. Human error always trumps encryption: No matter how robust the cryptographic protocols or how secure the messaging platform, a single misstep – like adding the wrong participant to a sensitive group chat—can render all technical safeguards useless. Encryption secures data at rest and in transit but cannot prevent a user from unintentionally sharing that data with an unauthorised person. The weakest link is not the algorithm but the human operating it. A secure platform does not equal secure policy enforcement: Using a secure platform like Signal does not equate to having a secure communication policy – platform ≠ policy. While Signal provides strong encryption and privacy features, it cannot enforce organisational rules, manage information sensitivity, or prevent misuse by trusted users. Security isn’t embedded in the tool but in how it is used, governed, and monitored. Without clear policies regarding group management, participant vetting, discussion classification, and user accountability, even the most secure platforms can become vectors for accidental or malicious leaks. Metadata is a hidden risk: Even when message content is encrypted, metadata still matters – and can be dangerously revealing. Metadata includes who is communicating, when, how often and from where. In the context of the Signal leak, while the messages may have been protected, specific participant patterns in communication could have exposed sensitive operational insights. Adversaries can exploit metadata to map networks, infer relationships, track activity patterns, or time-sensitive actions without decrypting a single word. Zero-trust applies to communications too: Zero-trust is often applied to networks, identities and endpoints but in today’s threat landscape it must also extend to communications. Just because a message is sent within an encrypted app doesn’t mean the recipient is verified, appropriate, or even authorized to receive that information. In the case of the Signal leak, the breach didn’t happen through technical compromise – it happened because assumed trust was misplaced. Applying zero-trust principles to communications means verifying every participant device’s security posture, controlling access dynamically, auditing group activity and continuously validating identity and context. Setting practical boundaries Security doesn’t stop at the algorithm; it must encompass behavior, policy, and trust boundaries. There are practical steps CISOw can take to mitigate human factors: Implement internal-only communication apps or hardened versions of Signal-like apps under controlled infrastructure Segment communications by classification level, such as operational, strategic, or confidential, to restrict group owners from adding participants outside a verified user directory Use AI-based monitoring to detect anomalies in group formation or message flow Conduct training that embeds “trust but verify” habits by simulating breaches to improve behavior under stress Adopt controls that minimise metadata exposure, limit group visibility and anonymize or obfuscate communication patterns wherever possible. CISOs must move from securing tools to securing behaviours. Building technical trust is step one, and creating a culture of secure communication is now step zero. D Wave Quantum Inc (NYSE:) is among the most talked-about firms in a heavily hyped industry. Quantum computing companies, D-Wave plus rivals like Rigetti Computing Inc (NASDAQ:). and legacy computing firm International Business Machines (NYSE:), could usher in a new way for humans to interact with and use technology. Successful applications of quantum computers, although few for the time being, suggest a world of computing many orders of magnitude more powerful than any classical computers in existence right now; the global quantum computing industry is expected to grow at an impressive CAGR of more than 20% for the next five years. And yet, shares of D-Wave have struggled to maintain upward momentum. Though the stock has more than quintupled in value in the last year, it has fallen by about 24% year-to-date (YTD). With the promise of quantum computing and D-Wave’s key achievements in the space, wouldn’t it be natural for the stock to continue to rise? The story is more complicated than that. Investors may be cautious about D-Wave because of its sky-high valuation; the firm trades at a price-to-sales ratio of a whopping 262.07. However, there are other reasons D-Wave may be a short seller’s prime target, at least in the short-to-medium term. Annealing vs. Gate-Model Kerrisdale Capital, a firm known for its high-profile short positions, recently published a report in which it criticized D-Wave for focusing on annealing quantum technology, which seeks to move toward the lowest energy state via quantum fluctuations. Kerrisdale argues that the commercial applications of this form of quantum architecture are minimal. D-Wave, the thinking goes, will fall behind rivals like IBM, building toward so-called gate-model quantum architecture in which sequences of logic gates allow more complex computations beyond optimization. Kerrisdale goes further, alleging that D-Wave’s hybrid solutions rely primarily on classical computing technology and offer little advantage over traditional computers. Legal Troubles for D-Wave While it’s not uncommon for a short-seller report like Kerrisdale’s to cause a company’s share price to fall, D-Wave has been grappling with a flood of legal concerns in recent weeks that threaten to send prices further down. The Schall Law Firm, the Portnoy Law Firm, and Block & Leviton have all signaled intent to investigate and potentially litigate against D-Wave for alleged securities fraud related to potential misinformation about its technologies. Profitability Woes D-Wave has struggled to achieve and maintain profitability, instead relying heavily on capital raises to continue its operations. The company has achieved a maximum recurring annual revenue of only around $9 million, and revenues in the last year were essentially flat compared to the prior year. Short sellers may also point to D-Wave’s lack of a clear path to profitability in the same breath. Though many investors see D-Wave’s technology as promising, there is speculation that it may still be years until the quantum computing industry has progressed far enough to be broadly marketable. D-Wave’s small size compared to massive tech players like IBM and others interested in dedicating increasing attention and resources to developing their quantum systems contributes to the case against it. As technology progresses, a few highly successful firms could quickly dominate the quantum industry. Massive tech titans may have a significant leg up on smaller, specialized competitors like D-Wave. Short Interest Inches Downward Despite all of these arguments in favor of shorting D-Wave, looking at the short interest in QBTS shares tells a slightly different story. Investors have shorted about 48 million D-Wave shares, or roughly 17% of the float. However, this figure is down by about 1 million shares from a month prior. Considering that the Kerrisdale report emerged in between, it could be that fewer investors have subscribed to its view than expected. At the same time, Wall Street analysts remain optimistic about D-Wave in general. All six analysts who have reviewed the company have rated it a Buy, and their consensus price target would have QBTS stock rising close to 16%. Those taking a more bullish view on D-Wave might find, in fact, that the sell-off partially inspired by Kerrisdale provides an excellent opportunity to buy in. National African American Museum Faces Uncertainty Without Its Leader National African American Museum Faces Uncertainty Without Its Leader In the eight years since it opened on the National Mall, the National Museum of African American History and Culture has become one of the glittering jewels of the Smithsonian Institution. With award-winning architecture, a three-tiered shape evoking a traditional Yoruban crown, and installations portraying the struggles and triumphs of African Americans, the museum registered its 10 millionth visitor in 2023, and is one of the Smithsonian’s most popular museums. But now it is in the cross-hairs of President Trump, who issued an executive order in March that seeks to address what he described as the Smithsonian’s promotion of “narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive,” singling out the African American museum as a particular offender. The president’s order has left the museum trying to navigate its most challenging political environment at a moment when it finds itself without a permanent leader. Its director, Kevin Young, was on leave when the order was issued and left soon afterward. Some see the museum as threatened. Several hundred protesters marched to the museum on Saturday, demanding that ****** history and the museums that explore it be protected from interference. Some of the protesters brandished homemade signs, like one with the museum’s initials — “I NMAAHC” — while others wore badges that said “I Take My History ******.” “So much of ****** history was lost and was recaptured,” said Beatrice Turpin-Peek, 59, from Maryland, who joined the march. “To hear that it’s under attack — it’s just heartbreaking.” Mr. Young, 54, a highly regarded poet and essayist who took the job in 2021, told the museum staff that he was leaving after four years to focus on writing. But the timing surrounding his resignation fueled questions. People familiar with the circumstances said in recent interviews that Mr. Young’s departure was negotiated after some Smithsonian officials began to question whether he was a good fit for the job. The Smithsonian’s tax filing for the year that ended in September 2022, the most recent available, lists the value of Mr. Young’s salary and benefits package at $456,275. In March, before the president’s executive order, Mr. Young went on an indefinite personal leave. He announced his permanent departure in the email to staff three weeks later. Shanita Brackett, the museum’s associate director of operations, who is highly regarded by many in museum management circles, was appointed interim director. She has worked at the museum since 2016 and once served as the acting director of the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum. Museum officials did not respond to requests to interview Ms. Brackett, in keeping with what has been the Smithsonian’s efforts to keep a low profile in the wake of Mr. Trump’s order. Several members of the African American museum board declined to comment or did not respond to queries. Vedet Coleman-Robinson the chief executive of the Association of African American Museums, which helped organize the rally, said that she did not think the departure of Mr. Young had left the museum in a particularly vulnerable position. “The work still gets done,” she said. “The mission still gets done as long as that team is there doing really good work. They will be fine.” The stark ambitions and abrupt pursuit of Mr. Trump’s agenda in his second term as president underlie much of the concern that spurred Saturday’s march as a show of support for the museum. “Our opponents are trying to erase ****** history, ****** voices and ****** lives,” said Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, a law professor and executive director of the African American Policy Forum, who is helping to lead the effort to protect the museum. Though the African American museum celebrates the achievements of ****** Americans, some worry that its exploration of the horrors of slavery and discrimination make it vulnerable to a White House whose executive order suggests that the Smithsonian has “come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology.” Michael M. Kaiser, chairman of the DeVos Institute of Arts Management and former president of the Kennedy Center in Washington, cited such a concern in a recent interview. “It’s a whole museum on a topic that the president doesn’t seem to want dealt with by the Smithsonian,” he said. The only specific mention of the African American museum in the Trump executive order criticized a graphic about “whiteness and white culture” posted on its website in May 2020, before Mr. Young’s arrival at the museum. Since late January, when President Trump issued an executive order banning diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the federal government, much of the rest of the material in the portal — now called “Teaching and Learning” — has also been removed. The occurrence of multiple supernovae has drawn the attention of researchers to be a valuable target for research into galactic interactions and stellar explosions. Cataloguing the galaxy According to the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies compiled by astronomer Halton, Arp in 1966, the galaxy is named Arp 184. This catalogues about 338 galaxies that tend to be neither entirely spiral nor entirely elliptical-shaped. Dwarf galaxies without particular structures and the galaxies interacting with one another are also catalogued here. Arp 184 has a bright spot radiating light as the centre. A thick, stormy disc of material surrounds this, with swirling strands of dark dust and bright spots of star formation strewn through the disc. A large spiral, star-speckled arm extends from the disc towards the viewer, for which it has earned a spot in this Atlas. The far side of Arp 184 does not have this impressive stretched arm, but it sports a few wisps of gas and stars on that side. Hubble snapshot observing programs The Hubble image showcases data from three Snapshot observing programs, one of which focused on Arp 184 for its unique appearance. The program surveyed galaxies listed in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies and A Catalogue of Southern Peculiar Galaxies and Associations. The other two programs examined the aftermath of astronomical events like supernovae and tidal disruption events. And that’s created an opportunity for people like Anyoghe Akwa. He left Ikom as a young man to study civil engineering. Now he’s back. “I haven’t left civil engineering, I love it. But I have more interest in cocoa now because it’s generating, per annum, it’s generating more money for me.” When Akwa left a bag of cocoa beans would sell for between $15 and $20. He says last year he harvested four bags, which each sold for between $500 and $750. The ***** of one bag, he added, matched his annual salary as a civil engineer. According to the ICCO, Nigeria is the world’s fourth largest cocoa producer – though its output is far behind Ghana and Ivory Coast. As noted by Variety, the latest contract proposals between the studios and the actors have found common ground on most of the terms for a new deal. That includes 24% wage increases over the life of the contract. But the two sides’ lack of agreement over generative AI continues to prolong the strike. Audrey Cooling, a spokesperson for the video game publishers, told Variety that, “We are hopeful the union will not choose to walk away when we are so close to a deal.” In response, SAG-AFTRA noted that the video game publishers presented their latest offer on April 30, and the actors responded with a counter-proposal on May 2. According to the actors, the publishers didn’t respond to that before making the negotiation terms public. SAG-AFTRA subsequently released its proposal online as well. “SAG-AFTRA condemns the video game companies’ attempt to sow confusion in the community by releasing misleading rhetoric about our ongoing negotiations,” said the union through a spokesperson. “The statement suggesting that the union would ‘walk away’ from negotiations on this contract is absurd and the opposite of the truth. The SNP leader made the announcement as he unveiled his administration’s programme for government 12 months ahead of the Holyrood election in May 2026. As well as putting the NHS “at the heart” of the legislative and policy agenda, Swinney announced his government would permanently ban peak rail fares and end an alcohol ban on ScotRail trains. The BMA union, which represents Scotland’s doctors, said it did not believe the extra 100,000 appointments promised in GP surgeries would end the 8am rush to book an appointment. The Conservatives said Swinney’s statement was “more of the same” while Labour said the first minister had failed to meet the challenges facing the country. The programme for government sets out the policy and legislative goals for the next parliamentary year. It is usually published after the summer recess, but Swinney moved the date this year to “enable a full year to delivery” before the Holyrood election. He told MSPs at Holyrood that his plans amounted to a “programme for a better Scotland”. Swinney acknowledged the difficulty many face in getting GP appointments can cause “deep frustration” in what he said was “described as the 8am lottery”. He said the NHS would deliver an extra 100,000 appointments in GP surgeries focused on “key risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and smoking”. It is understood GPs will be given extra funding to allow them to bring in people with conditions such as high blood pressure or cholesterol problems for check-ups before they are feeling unwell enough to ask to see a doctor. It is hoped this will help ease the demand for on-the-day appointments. Dr Iain Morrison from the BMA said GP surgeries in Scotland currently offer about 650,000 appointments a week – so the extra 100,000 would add up to only around one working day of extra capacity in a year. Speaking to BBC Scotland’s Newsdrive, he said the “enhanced service” appointments for those at high risk of cardiovascular disease were welcome, but did not address the key issues. The BMA wants the government to address a funding shortfall that they say leaves them unable to recruit new GPs to their practices. “There is nothing left to give,” Dr Morrison said. “We need that investment direct into general practice in order to boost our staffing numbers to handle the record level of demand we are experiencing.” Getty Images The Scottish government says it will end an alcohol ban on ScotRail trains Swinney’s statement, coming just nine months after the last programme for government, was light on proposed legislation. He instead spent time emphasising his government’s record in government. Among the new measures was a commitment to scrap peak rail fares on nationalised ScotRail trains. A previous pilot scheme was axed by the government last year, with ministers citing low passenger numbers. Swinney said the move would “put more money in people’s pockets and mean less CO2 is pumped into our skies”. Ministers also say they will end an alcohol ban on ScotRail trains, which has been in place since 2020. It is to be replaced by “regulations that focus restrictions more effectively on particular times and locations, similar to previous restrictions”. Ahead of the announcement, Swinney faced questions on anti-social behaviour associated with a scheme giving everyone under the age of 22 a free bus pass. The government confirmed it was working on a scheme to suspend, or potentially permanently remove, passes from those engaging in anti-social behaviour. Swinney told MSPs child poverty and tackling cost-of-living pressures were also among his priorities. It came after figures released in March showed the Scottish government had missed its legal targets for reducing child poverty. The Scottish government announced in December that it would effectively offset the two-child benefit cap north of the border by April 2026, or earlier if possible. The cap, introduced by the *** government in 2017, prevents parents from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for more than two children, with a few exemptions. Swinney said his government was “on track” to deliver payments to affected families by next year. He said the government would publish a child poverty action plan for 2026 to 2031 “to keep us on the journey to meet our poverty reduction targets for 2030”. The programme for government includes a commitment not to introduce new income tax bands, or increase current rates, before the next election. It also says ministers will bring forward a bill to regulate non-surgical procedures which are offered for “cosmetic or lifestyle purposes”. Last week the Scottish government said it would not bring forward planned legislation to criminalise misogyny before next year’s election – sparking criticism from the Scottish Greens. Ministers said there was not enough time to draw up a law which reflected the recent Supreme Court judgement on the definition of a woman, and instead planned to amend existing hate crime legislation to provide protections on the basis of sex. The government also confirmed it would not be bringing forward legislation to end conversion therapy this term. During his announcement, Swinney said the government was “entirely committed” to tackling misogyny. He also said his ministers would work with the *** government to deliver a conversion therapy ban across Scotland, England and Wales. ‘More of the same’ Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay described the programme for government as “flimsy” and “more of the same”. He told MSPs that it “would do little to restore public trust”. Labour leader Anas Sarwar said billions of pounds of public money had been “wasted by the SNP” during its time in power, calling the announcement “embarrassing”. He added: “This statement fails to meet the challenges or ambitions of the people of Scotland.” John Dickie, director of the Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland, said the government’s plan “lacks the scale and urgency needed to meet statutory targets never mind achieve the FM’s ambition to eradicate child poverty altogether”. The Poverty Alliance said the policy agenda “doesn’t go far enough”, while the STUC described it as “bold on rhetoric but light on details and on cash”.
