Israel tells people to evacuate from Yemen’s main airport
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Israel tells people to evacuate from Yemen’s main airport Israel tells people to evacuate from Yemen’s main airport Israel has told people to evacuate Sanaa International Airport in Yemen’s capital, a day after it struck targets in the neighbouring city of Hodeidah. An Israeli military spokesman warned: “failure to evacuate and stay away from the area puts you in danger.” The attacks come after the Yemeni Houthi group fired a missile that landed near Israel’s main airport on Sunday. Israel has launched several rounds of strikes against the Iran-backed group in Yemen, including the targeting of a power plant and ports in January. Israel previously carried out a strike on Sanaa’s airport last December. The IDF on Monday said it attacked Houthi targets in the Hudaydah Port and the Bajil cement factory east of the city of Hudaydah. It claimed that the port was used by the group as a “central supply source”, and for “the transfer of Iranian weapons”, while the cement factory functioned as a “significant economic resource”, and was used by the group to construct tunnels and infrastructure. The port is the second-largest in the Red Sea after Aden, and is the entry point for about 80% of Yemen’s food imports. A spokesman for the Houthi-run health ministry, Anees al-Asbahi, said at least 21 people were injured in the attack. The Houthis blamed the US and Israel jointly for the attack, but a US defence official told the AFP news agency that their forces “did not participate” in the strikes on Yemen. The missile fired towards Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv on Sunday morning landed next to an access road near the main terminal. Six people were injured, Israeli emergency services said. Following the strike, the Houthis said they would impose “a comprehensive aerial blockade” on Israel by targeting airports in response to Israel’s plans to expand its military operations in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed retaliation against the Houthis for the airport attack, saying: “We attacked in the past, we will attack in the future.” Source link #Israel #tells #people #evacuate #Yemens #main #airport Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -

Microsoft just revealed two new Surface devices – here are the 4 key things you need to know about them Microsoft just revealed two new Surface devices – here are the 4 key things you need to know about them Rumors regarding a new Surface lineup from Microsoft have run rampant, with hints that much smaller and thinner renditions of the Copilot+ laptops were in the works. This comes after Microsoft’s Surface Laptop and Surface Pro 2024 models, providing exceptional battery life thanks to their Snapdragon processors and great portability. Well, it turns out those rumors were indeed correct. Microsoft has announced two brand-new Surface devices: the Surface Laptop 13-inch and the Surface Pro 12-inch. Both are built to deliver even more impressive performance across the board, but ahead, we’re breaking down the four key takeaways you’ll want to know about them. You may like (Image credit: Microsoft) The 13-inch model is the lightest and thinnest Surface Laptop ever Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop 13-inch will be the ‘lightest, most portable Surface Laptop ever’, thanks to its ultrathin design and 13-inch touchscreen display. It will come in three different color variations – Ocean, Violet, and Platinum – to suit your preferred style. It weighs just 2.7 lbs, which is an impressive 1.22kg, compared to 2024’s 15-inch model, which weighed in at 3.67 lbs (1.66kg). Most importantly, this means portability is the new Surface Laptop’s highlight, ensuring you can take your device with you anywhere you go and pack it in most backpacks. It’s also an improvement over 2024’s 13.8-inch model. This includes USB-C connectivity that supports fast charging, DisplayPort 1.4a, and up to two 4K monitors at 60Hz refresh rates. The new Surface Pro will have a 12-inch display, ideal for its 2-in-1 design, providing a pleasant laptop and tablet experience. That will also make it slightly slimmer than the previous 13-inch size. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. It’s also worth noting that there is no mention of an OLED model yet, and the new Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard is sold separately. (Image credit: Microsoft) Surface Laptop 13-inch is ‘50% faster’ than the Surface Laptop 5, competing with Apple’s MacBook Air M3 Using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus processor, Microsoft claims the Surface Laptop 13-inch is ‘50% faster’ than its previous Surface Laptop 5, which Intel’s 12th Gen processors powered. This will be the 8-core processor instead of the 10-core variant, which is enough to provide powerful performance in AI-intensive tasks with 45 NPU tops. Microsoft also mentions it’s faster than Apple’s MacBook Air M3, and based on benchmarks, the Snapdragon X Plus wins in multi-core processing over Apple’s M-based chip. We’ll need to see how this competes with Apple’s latest M4 chipset, though. The Surface Pro 12-inch will also use the same configuration, keeping your productivity at its best on the go, thanks to its high speeds. It’s a different move from the previous Laptop and Pro models, as both came with X Plus and X Elite configurations. Even so, it’s a reasonable compromise, as you’ll see. (Image credit: Microsoft) Improved battery life for both devices Unsurprisingly, the new Surface Laptop 13-inch provides the longest and best battery life out of all Surface devices, with a promise of up to 23 hours of usage (local video playback). This is an upgrade from the Surface Laptop (7th Edition) 13.8-inch model’s 20 hours and the 15-inch’s 22 hours, almost giving a total of 24 hours of usage. The same applies to the new Surface Pro 12-inch, as Microsoft claims it provides up to 16 hours of usage, a decent leap over the previous 14 hours. We’ll have to see real-world tests for both devices to gain an accurate insight, but this is great for anyone who needs extra power to stay locked into productivity on the go. It seems that Microsoft has omitted the X Elite configurations to preserve battery life, which is great because the X Plus is still a powerful chip, and staying zoned into work that extra bit longer has an advantage. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors are among the most efficient available, providing great performance without draining too much battery. The Surface laptops have been a testament to that, and Microsoft is showing it again with the new models. (Image credit: Microsoft) The Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch are much cheaper than their predecessors Perhaps the biggest highlight beyond the smaller designs and battery life is pricing. The Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $899, while the Surface Pro 12-inch starts at $799. These are huge price drops from their previous models, which both start at $1,099. Microsoft’s plan is clear; affordability is key, and it’s kept prices within a reasonable range considering the presence of the Snapdragon X Plus chip. This will effectively help consumers get their hands on the new Surface Laptop, which is said to outperform its predecessors in the battery life department. Both Copilot+ PCs are available to pre-order now and will be available in select markets on May 20. We’re waiting for Microsoft to confirm pricing in the *** and Australia. Captain Blood Review – Original Pirate Material | TheSixthAxis Captain Blood Review – Original Pirate Material | TheSixthAxis WTMG’s Leo Faria: “I had a fun time with Captain Blood even if it’s clearly dated. For a forgotten game that should have been released back during the end of the Bush administration, the idea still feels fresh to this day. A pirate-themed God of War clone was appealing back then, and still is now. Just bear in mind the quality of life enhancements you’d expect from the 2020s aren’t featured in this game, and that it wouldn’t have even been a masterpiece for its intended generation of consoles. If that’s okay to you, then go for it. Nvidia GPU tracking tech proposed by US lawmakers in smuggling crackdown Nvidia GPU tracking tech proposed by US lawmakers in smuggling crackdown U.S. Congressman and physicist Bill Foster plans to introduce a bill that will require advanced AI chipmakers like Nvidia to include a built-in location reporting system. According to Reuters, this system will use existing and readily available technology to find the general country-level location of an AI chip. In fact, two sources say that Alphabet is using something similar to track the location of its in-house Tensor AI chips across all its data centers to protect against theft and other security breaches. The White House, under both the Biden and Trump administrations, has been enforcing bans against the export of advanced chips to China since 2022. It has been doing this to limit its rival’s access to cutting-edge technology and help ensure the U.S.’s dominance in AI technology. Washington even recently expanded the export controls to include previously allowed chips like the MI308 and H20, resulting in an $800-million and $5.5-billion write-off for AMD and Nvidia, respectively. However, the bans and sanctions have been criticized for being ineffective, with the former U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo calling them “a fool’s errand”. We’ve had verified reports of ******** businesses smuggling advanced chips into mainland China, and the company behind DeepSeek, one of China’s most advanced AI models, is accused of using smuggled Nvidia AI chips. Even the U.S. Senate found that the Bureau of Security and Industry (BIS), the agency in charge of export controls, was sorely lacking in resources and relied on voluntary compliance from chipmakers. Rep. Foster’s proposal aims to solve this issue by requiring AI chips to communicate with a secure computer server whenever they go online. According to the source, the time difference between when the chip sends the signal and when the server receives it is enough to determine its rough location. Reuters claims that independent technical experts say that the proposal by the congressman, who is a former particle physicist and has a doctorate in physics from Harvard University, is feasible and could potentially work. Geo-blocking implementation to be discussed However, the Congressman from Illinois wants to go beyond that. He also wants the chips to stop booting if they detect that they do not have the proper export licenses. This would be significantly more technically challenging than just finding a chip’s location, but the representative says that “we can have more detailed discussions with the actual chip and module providers” to know how to implement it. Requiring these technologies to be built into chips will likely get some pushback, especially when privacy is called into question. Nevertheless, this bill has reportedly bipartisan support, with representatives from both sides of the aisle supporting the concept. As Trump tariffs sink in, ********* companies pivot from US to new markets As Trump tariffs sink in, ********* companies pivot from US to new markets By Promit Mukherjee OTTAWA (Reuters) -A manufacturer of capsules and tablets for the pharmaceuticals industry is scouting Asia for new partners. A steel component maker, with a client base in the United States stretching back 35 years, is telling customers to expect to pay higher prices. Another company, that produces mascot costumes for sporting or school events, is lowering its prices so as not to lose American customers. President Donald Trump’s tariff war – and his repeated threats to annex Canada – are upending decades of close trade ties between the two North American neighbors, and prompting many small-scale ********* manufacturing firms to revise their long-term business strategies. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who led the Liberal party to victory last month by campaigning to stand up to Trump, is scheduled to meet the U.S. President at the White House on Tuesday. He has repeatedly said the old relationship with the United States is over. Even if the U.S. forges a new trade agreement with Canada, Trump’s erratic policy and the uncertainty of doing business with the U.S. will persist, according to interviews with more than a dozen companies, advisors, trade lawyers and associations. “If you are a smart, savvy business person, you are not going to jump right back into another arrangement where you are totally reliant on a U.S. partner,” said Mike Chisholm, who runs a consultancy for ********* exporters. “Owners want stability, banks want stability, private equity funds want stability,” he said. “They are just going to be very, very careful.” Canada, which has historically depended on U.S. markets for 75% of its exports, was one of the first countries hit by Trump’s tariffs. Trump has justified the tariffs as a way to hold Canada accountable for fentanyl entering the U.S. – although data shows less than 1% of all seizures come from across the ********* border. In March, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports coming into the U.S. and then slapped another 25% tariff on cars and parts that did not comply with a North American free trade agreement, although he stopped short of a broad reciprocal tariff imposed on some countries in early April. Experts have said that adding reciprocal tariffs on Canada would have spiked bankruptcies in the manufacturing sector. The manufacturing sector ships 42% of its output into the U.S and 41% of its roughly 1.7 million workers rely on U.S. imports, according to government figures. Carney’s office declined to provide fresh comment on the impact of tariffs. Story Continues When asked for comment, White House spokesman Kush Desai said: “********* companies won’t have to worry at all about tariffs when Canada becomes our cherished 51st state.” ‘WE NEED TO PIVOT’ PNP Pharmaceuticals, a contract manufacturer for drug makers in British Columbia, responded to Trump’s tariff moves by trying to find customers in Asia, Alan Urmeneta, Partnership Sourcing Manager, said in an interview. “We are now venturing into other markets as we see that we need to pivot,” Urmeneta said. He declined to identify specific countries. While it does not currently face tariffs, LabelPak Printing Inc., a British Columbia-based distributor of packaging products sourced from Asia, is considering focusing exclusively on the ********* market and gradually reducing the 15% in sales that come from the U.S. “If he (Trump) gets mad … and decides to throw a 50% tariff on ********* goods… it’s going to really put us out of the market,” Ken Gallie, the company’s founder, said. “We are going to put more emphasis on the ********* business.” While some ********* companies have lost trust, those reliant on the U.S. market cannot entirely replace it, especially smaller firms, companies and industry associations have said. Canada’s economy is less than a tenth the size of its neighbor and shipping overseas is costly. Chisholm, the consultant, says some of the companies he advises are setting up offices and hiring sales agents in Europe and Asia to try to reduce their operations in the U.S. “There are markets all over the world that we have free-trade agreements with. Where can I do business is what many are thinking,” he said. DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS Other companies are having difficult conversations with U.S. customers, several executives told Reuters. “We are talking to these businesses and telling them, unfortunately, their government has chosen to have them pay more,” James White, CEO of Wellmaster, which makes steel components used in the energy and water supply sectors. Joyce Banda, CEO of Ontario-based Concept Factory Inc., which creates mascot costumes for sporting or school events, said she dropped her prices in anticipation of tariffs to try to keep U.S. customers. Now she is going to have to bear that loss even after Trump held off on imposing reciprocal tariffs, she said. For Natalie Gaudreault, owner of Fusion TG, a tool steel distributor, Trump’s tariffs piled up as a double whammy on her Montreal-based business. Her company imports almost 70% of all its steel requirement from China, molds it to customers’ specifications and supplies it to tool and die makers and roll formers. A fifth of her sales are to the U.S. She was first hit by 25% tariffs that Canada imposed on China in October. Then came Trump’s 25% tariff. With other taxes, she estimates her products going into the U.S. will more than double in cost. “I am not going to absorb the cost. I have to charge it to them,” she said, adding that her sales shrunk by a third in the first quarter. Meanwhile, some firms are taking the rare step of trying to re-open contracts with clients, including clauses on sharing tariff costs, complicating business relations, said Clifford Sosnow, partner and chair of the international trade and investment group at law firm Fasken. “It’s a hot knife through butter,” he said of such negotiations. “It doesn’t work without creating damage.” (Reporting by Promit Mukherjee; Editing by Caroline Stauffer and Suzanne Goldenberg) Source link #Trump #tariffs #sink #********* #companies #pivot #markets Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Risk Appetite Remains Weak as Trade Tensions Remain High Risk Appetite Remains Weak as Trade Tensions Remain High The year as markets extended 2024’s rally. But as details of the dramatic shift in US tariff policy emerged, as 2025 unfolded. The defensive stance persists, based on a set of ETF pairs that map the crowd’s appetite for risk via prices through Monday (May 5). A proxy for global asset allocation sentiment continues in a risk-off posture, according to the ratio for an aggressive strategy () vs. its conservative counterpart (). Although the indicator has rebounded recently, a weak trend endures, based on the ratio’s 50-day average holding below its 200-day average. A recovery in the short average above its long counterpart would signal a resumption of a bullish outlook. That shift, presumably, would require greater clarity on tariffs, a development that doesn’t appear to be imminent after the White House asked companies and consumers for patience with its policy agenda. An even stronger risk-off signal continues via US stocks via a broad measure of American equities () vs. its low-volatility counterpart (). This ratio has fallen sharply in recent months and remains deeply negative from a sentiment perspective. A weak trend is also conspicuous for US stocks () vs. foreign developed-market equities (). The risk appetite for US shares (SPY) is also frail vis-à-vis US bonds (). Sentiment for US small-cap stocks () was already caught in a bear-market trend going into the trade war relative to a broad measure of equities (SPY), and more of the same applies through early May. Markets are looking for signs of progress that reduce global trade tensions, but so far the negatives still outweigh the positives. President Trump says that deals are coming, but on his terms: “We’re negotiating with many countries but at the end of this I’ll set my own deals because I set the deal, they don’t set the deal, I set the deal,” he told reporters Sunday. “This is not like a big deal that’s gonna be signed — in some cases we’ll sign them, but we don’t have to sign them. I’ll be setting the deal, I’ll be setting the tariff.” As talking points go for boosting optimism, those comments are weak tea. Markets, as a result, are still waiting for more substance in the news flow before reversing the risk-off signaling that weighs on the risk appetite. CO School District Fights on Side of Parents to Keep Controversial Books Off Library Shelves CO School District Fights on Side of Parents to Keep Controversial Books Off Library Shelves COLORADO – A battle over books available to young children is brewing in one Colorado school district. It all started in August when the Elizabeth School Board voted to remove 19 books from its school libraries. All were books the board deemed inappropriate, like ‘The Hate You Give,’ ‘Nineteen Minutes,’ and ‘George.’ “It’s about who is in fourth grade who is transitioning,” District Public Information Officer Jeff Maher said of ‘George’ in an interview with 710KNUS. Before the district removed the books, it sought community input. “We provided a display for 25 days for families in the community to come and review them, read them, and give the board feedback, and overwhelmingly the community said we don’t feel these books have value and should be removed from our library,” Superintendent Dan Snowberger explained in an interview with CBN News. Months later, in December, the ACLU filed a lawsuit on behalf of two students, the NAACP, and the Authors Guild, saying the removal of these books violates students’ First Amendment rights to be able to access different information and ideas. A district judge agreed and ordered the books be returned. Now, after some legal back and forth, the books are back on school shelves while the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals considers the case. “Part of the litigation has really been around, what is the right of a school board to curate its content?” Snowberger told CBN News. “We feel very strongly that the libraries in our district are part of the curriculum resources and so our board’s view and my view is that materials contained in our library should support our curriculum and needless to say the books that were reviewed did not.” Associate Dean and Professor at Regent University School of Law, Brad Jacob, says in a situation like this, judgment calls have to be made. “There could be ******** reasons why the decision is made,” Jacob told CBN News. “If the school district says we’re not going to allow any books that show ****** people, we’re just going to have no books about ****** people in our library, you’re going to say ok, that looks like race discrimination. It looks like we’ve got an Equal Protection Clause challenge. But in general the decisions about what books will be most helpful, what will most of our students gain from having on the shelf, and what is appropriate for them to read in this school – elementary, middle school, high school – those are for school authorities to make based on the input that they get from their community.” For Snowberger, it’s about letting parents do the parenting. “We want children to come to school with the values they have at home and go home with those values,” he explained. “It’s not our job to change them. It’s our job to teach children to read, write, do math, learn science, civics and social studies.” Right now, the case is in a holding pattern while it waits for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to consider both sides. The court is expected to either make a ruling or move to hear arguments within the next few weeks. You can support the school district in its legal battle here. 7 killed, 26 injured overnight as civilians caught up in escalating attacks by Russia, Ukraine 7 killed, 26 injured overnight as civilians caught up in escalating attacks by Russia, Ukraine May 6 (UPI) — At least seven people were killed and 26 injured overnight as Kyiv and Moscow traded attacks, authorities in both countries said. Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow for a second consecutive night, temporarily shutting all four of the capital’s main airports for several hours, while Russian forces struck Ukraine’s eastern Sumy region with guided bombs and artillery, killing three people and injuring seven, and the ****** Sea port of Odessa where one person was killed. Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said four people were injured in Kharkiv after it was targeted by at least 20 Russian drones over a two-hour ******* during the night, razing a market in the east of the city and causing damage in three other neighborhoods. Kupiansk and Izyumsky, southeast of Kharkiv, and three other districts of the province were targeted by Russian artillery, injuring a further seven people and causing damage to private houses and businesses, Syniehubov wrote in a social media post. He said the weapons directed against the province also included laser-guided bombs. A man was seriously injured in Ilarionove in Dnipropetrovsk province, just southwest of Dnipro city, after infrastructure, business premises and residential buildings in several districts were struck by guided bombs, drones and artillery, Gov. Serhii Lysak said on his official account on Telegram. Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia’s Kursk region killed three people and injured seven, Gov. Alexander Khinshtein said in an update Tuesday. The attacks were part of a sustained aerial assault overnight with Russia’s Defense Ministry claiming to have downed 105 drones over a dozen regions, 19 of them as they approached Moscow. No injuries were reported, but the attacks forced the temporary closure of nine regional airports in addition to Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky airports. Khinstein said Ukrainian ground forces had also attacked a power substation in Rylsk, injuring two people and cutting off power. The report came after Russian war bloggers reported a fresh incursion into Kursk by Ukrainian amored units, firing off missiles as they traversed minefields with armoured vehicles. Russia claimed victory in Kursk in April, routing Ukrainian forces eight months after parts of the region were occupied following a counteroffensive by Kyiv. The attacks inside Russia came two days before Moscow is due to begin a three-day cease-fire to enable it to observe Victory Day when celebrations are held across the country to mark Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The anniversary is also an important occasion in Ukraine, where much of the fighting on the eastern front took place. Apple Said to Be Testing Under-Display Face ID on iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max Models Apple Said to Be Testing Under-Display Face ID on iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max Models iPhone 17 series is expected to land in September this year, but we are already seeing multiple leaks about the iPhone 18 series, which is likely to arrive in 2026. Apple is believed to offer a significant redesign for its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. A new leak coming out of China states that the company is testing under-display Face ID technology for the iPhone 18 Pro models. The vanilla iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Slim (Air) could retain the Dynamic Island feature. Apple Could Be Working on Under-Screen Face ID Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from ********) on Weibo claimed that Apple is testing 3D under-display Face ID system for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. The tipster, citing supply chain sources, states that the iPhone 18 Pro series smartphones will have a single HIAA (hole-in-active-area) to house the front-facing camera in their display (translated from ********). The regular iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air are tipped to feature “regular 2+1 hole”. This indicates that there will be a visible camera for the base models. While the high-end iPhone 18 Pro models aim for a more futuristic design, the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Air are expected to continue with the Dynamic Island, like the current iPhone 16. This may be a strategic decision by Apple to differentiate the Pro series. Implementing under-display Face ID is considered to be a game-changer for Apple. The use of this technology would offer a seamless screen experience. A recent report suggested that this design evolution could act as a stepping stone to enable a full-screen experience without any visible cutouts or bezels in the iPhone 19 lineup. At least one model slated for 2027—coinciding with the iPhone’s 20th anniversary—is expected to feature an edge-to-edge display. The brand is rumoured to achieve this by embedding the front-facing camera beneath the screen. Affiliate links may be automatically generated – see our ethics statement for details. Radeon RX 9060 XT listed by retailer in Brazil — 16GB triple fan model from Gigabyte detailed without pricing Radeon RX 9060 XT listed by retailer in Brazil — 16GB triple fan model from Gigabyte detailed without pricing With AMD’s Radeon RX 9060 XT graphics cards tipped for a Computex unveiling (the Taipei-hosted show begins just two weeks from today, on May 20), it isn’t a surprise to see retailers preparing and accidentally publishing product pages. VideoCardz unearthed a prime example of this phenomenon today, with a screenshot and link to Brazilian electronics outlet Terabyteshop. The retailer has published a page (link still live at the time of writing) with a smattering of details and an image showing a Gigabyte GV-R9060XTGAMING OC-16GD. The product’s slightly more human-friendly name is the Gigabyte Radeon RX 9060 XT Gaming OC 16GB. Slightly frustratingly, this early spotting of an RX 9060 XT in retail is from a store with just this single product example – a 16GB model. Though we have seen quite confident reports stating AMD hasn’t canceled its plans for an 8GB version of this card, the Gigabyte listing doesn’t help affirm or reject such a product’s upcoming existence. Terabyteshop’s listing is missing any key availability or pricing details, too, but the Gigabyte product code and specs look genuine. (Image credit: VideoCardz) This particular WindForce model of the RX 9060 XT looks a lot like Gigabyte’s Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC model. It is a pretty big cooler to strap on this lower power card, surely overkill, but we don’t have precise indications for the release product’s TGP – likely under 200W. As mentioned in the intro, though, it is only two weeks away from the RX 9060 / XT graphics card family’s expected announcement. We should also get MSRP indicators and a release timetable at the show. AMD partners are also likely to showcase their new products based on the RX 9060 / XT. As for the products hitting retail availability, tipsters point to the first week in June. That isn’t long to wait. Hybrid meeting technology helps AV teams address equity Hybrid meeting technology helps AV teams address equity The dust still hasn’t settled on the future of work and what it might look like. The debate continues as workers say they are more productive at home, even as a growing number of companies insist on a return to office or at least a partial RTO. Regardless, one thing is nearly certain: Most, if not all, business meetings will include video and remote participants. Hybrid meeting technology is helping remote workers figure out how to best present themselves in video meetings. On-camera appearance is vastly improved by proper framing, backlighting and other basic best practices. At the same time, many remote workers upgraded their home offices by incorporating better lighting and using camera angles designed to improve their appearance on business video calls. Additionally, workers have gotten comfortable with a variety of collaborative tools when working from home. Features such as screen sharing, whiteboarding and chat — as well as AI — are common in the remote meeting experience. Meeting room setups struggle with video equity Unfortunately, the meeting room video experience itself still lags. A typical meeting room video camera captures the entire room. Remote attendees don’t get a full-framed view of each person in the room. Instead, they see a bunch of people sitting around the meeting room table. None of them are as visually appealing or effective as the remote attendees. The industry, however, is addressing video equity. From both a hardware and software perspective, from camera vendors and video service providers, new products and features are improving the appearance of people in traditional meeting rooms. Vendors are taking different approaches, but the result is framing the active speaker in the meeting room to appear like remote attendees. One big trend in hybrid meeting technology is multicamera systems. These can automatically switch between camera feeds or display a split-screen view to better frame and portray in-room meeting attendees. While these features are impressive and work well in real-world scenarios, they are still primarily in high‐end or specialized meeting rooms. Most businesses have yet to adopt these systems due to cost and integration challenges. Meeting chat is a problem In-room meeting attendees often have less access to collaboration tools than remote attendees. Chat is the prime example. Remote participants can share messages, images, files — even their thoughts and feelings — via the meeting chat. Meanwhile, the people in the meeting room may not even be able to see this chat. Forget about taking part; they could be completely out of the loop. There is no accepted go-to solution for this problem, forcing companies to get creative. Some explore integrated software and hardware that displays chat content on in-room screens or through dedicated collaboration hubs. Options range from requiring in-room attendees to have a laptop open to access chat to incorporating an additional room display device that continuously streams remote chat content. The rise of AI meeting assistants Many workers have noticed a new type of attendee in their everyday Zoom and Microsoft Teams meetings: AI meeting assistants. These tools are incredibly powerful. Even at their most basic level — providing meeting transcriptions — they add enormous value. But many of today’s bots go far beyond that, offering detailed meeting summaries and even answering questions privately midmeeting. Workers can simply type, “I stopped paying attention five minutes ago; what did I miss?” and immediately get caught up without embarrassment. The in-person meeting room experience must be on par with the desktop experience. Otherwise, even RTO workers will opt to join meetings from their desks. This is yet another equity issue. Most AI assistant capabilities integrate with remote meeting software and are less accessible to participants in the physical conference room. Consider strategies to integrate AI tools into meeting room designs — ideally giving access at each seat — to ensure all attendees benefit equally. Continuous improvement The new norm of the workplace may not be clearly defined for some time. Many remote workers remain reluctant to return to the office. It adds insult to injury to make them less effective in meetings. The in-person meeting room experience must be on par with the desktop experience. Otherwise, even RTO workers will opt to join meetings from their desks where they can be properly framed, look good on camera and have access to meeting room tools. Obviously, this outcome is unacceptable. If employees make the commute and are in the same building, they should go to the meeting room. Nothing, not even video, beats the in-person experience. It’s up to industry vendors to improve hybrid meeting technology by further developing multicamera systems, collaborative in-room options and other meeting equity technologies. Until these capabilities are more widely adopted, meeting equity will remain an issue from the huddle room to the boardroom. Meeting attendees will often be better off at their desktop. Defra taps BT to connect workers, sensors across *** Defra taps BT to connect workers, sensors across *** Looking to fulfil its mission to deliver connectivity to support real-time reporting of critical events, from flooding to farming disease outbreaks, the ***’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has signed a five-year contract with communications provider BT to bolster rural connectivity for thousands of its field workers across England, Scotland and Wales. Supported by 35 agencies and public bodies, Defra’s core mission is to be responsible for improving and protecting the environment in the ***, and has the stated aim of growing a green economy and sustaining thriving rural communities. It also supports food, farming and fishing industries. The agency has four priority outcomes: improve the environment through cleaner air and water, minimised waste, and thriving plant and terrestrial and marine wildlife; reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon storage in the agricultural, waste, peat and tree planting sectors to help deliver net zero; reduce the likelihood and impact of flooding and coastal erosion on people, businesses, communities and the environment; and increase the sustainability, productivity and resilience of the agriculture, fishing, food and drink sectors, enhance biosecurity at the border, and raise animal ******** standards. Under the terms of the deal, BT will support the real-time reporting of Defra’s data to help predict extreme weather events like flooding, and prevent farming disease outbreaks and offer connectivity to improve safety for remote and lone-workers. The contract, which will run for up to five years across England, Scotland and Wales, will use EE’s mobile network to provide 34,000 connections for workers and a range of devices, from water sensors to payment machines. The connectivity will enable reliable reporting of real-time data on things like water quality, extreme weather events, flood risks and the spread of disease through farming crops or livestock. It will also support workers across the Department and its Cluster Members, including The Environment Agency, Animal, Plant and Health Agency, Natural England, Marine Management Organisation and The Rural Payment Agency. The deal will also tap into EE’s investment in the £1.3bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme – designed to wipe so-called not-spots from the map, providing high-quality mobile coverage to 95% of the *** by 2025 – to bolster 4G coverage in some of the ***’s most remote areas, including access to BT’s digital tools to support Defra’s carbon reduction commitment, enabling both field and office-based Defra employees to work effectively. Upgrades delivered under the SRN programme have in part enabled EE to expand 4G connectivity for its customers across the *** by a further 10,000 square kilometres between 2019 and 2024. BT will also support Defra’s carbon reduction ambitions as part of the deal. It will be given access to key tools including eSIM capability and BT’s Carbon Dashboard, which provides visibility of electricity consumption and carbon emissions at an individual workload and application level to help minimise waste and reduce carbon-generating activities. “It’s a privilege to welcome Defra to the EE network and to support their mission to restore and enhance the environment for the next generation,” said Andy Rowe, BT’s director of central government. “Their workers perform critical work across the *** and it’s vital they are provided with reliable network coverage, especially in times of crisis,” he added. “For organisations with large fleets and field workers, hybrid working is about more than just home and office spaces. Staying connected on the go is critical for Defra’s workers who rely on mobile connectivity to operate effectively and serve the wider public community daily or in emergency situations.” Source link #Defra #taps #connect #workers #sensors Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
