Jenny Watt
Jenny Watt has run death cafés around Glasgow since 2022
For Jenny Watt, death is a key part of her life.
The 31-year-old spends two or three nights a week chatting to people – whether familiar faces or strangers she’s met for the first time – about everything connected with death, from working through grief to the ideal song for a ********.
Jenny runs a handful of death cafés across Glasgow – community spaces that aim to encourage conversation and discussion about a topic few people like to raise.
BBC Scotland News attended one of the weekly gatherings, which Jenny believes can help break down taboos about the subject.
But what makes a person want to spend time talking about the end of life?
Jenny estimates around half the attendees at her groups are there to process grief in some way, whether for a recent loss or from 20 or 30 years ago.
“The same way people are called to nursing or religion, I’ve always been interested in death,” she explains.
“It’s going to happen to everybody. It might be unique for you and the relationships you are grieving but if you feel it just by yourself it can be a lonely experience.
“When you start talking about it you realise it’s not so scary.”
Jenny first attended a death café online during the coronavirus pandemic, and notes she wasn’t looking to work through any “traumatic bereavement” – she was simply interested in the subject.
As face-to-face meetings resumed, she could not find any local groups offering discussions about grief around Glasgow.
Taking the plunge, she set up her own meeting space around two and-a-half years ago in the Battlefield area of Glasgow, panicking that no-one would turn up.
However people did – sometimes just occasionally, others more consistently – to have some tea and a slice of cake while discussing mortality and life.
‘Nothing is off limits’
On the night BBC Scotland visited Jenny’s café, the attendees were a mix of regulars and first timers, drawn to the meeting for various reasons.
As well as those processing grief, Jenny believes another 25% or so would be people diagnosed with a serious condition or caring for someone. The remainder tends to be people simply interested in the topic.
“Whatever people want to talk about, nothing is off limits,” says Jenny.
“People laugh, they’ll cry and at the end I think everyone learns something, whether that’s reflecting on their own experience or suddenly realising they should get power of attorney.”
Nicola Smith said it was important to talk more about death
That sentiment is shared by Nicola Smith, one of the more regular attendees at the Battlefield meetings.
She came along to one of the sessions the same day a close friend of hers had died, and “the tears flowed”.
But letting her emotions pour out is not the only reason that Nicola keeps attending.
“It’s such an intrinsic part of our life and living, and yet we don’t talk about it,” she told BBC Scotland.
“We don’t know how to deal with it, because we don’t do enough talking about it. I lost a very dear relative when my children were very small, and it was the first time my daughter had seen me cry.
“She asked me why my face was wet, and it was the time to explain it was OK to cry and this is what happens when you lose someone you love. It’s not a weakness, it’s not something you hush up.”
Nothing is off limits at the weekly meetings
Nicola added she believed the topic had become more taboo among modern generations due to the growth of hospice care since the 1960s, meaning a decrease in people dying at home.
Those trends could explain the growth in death cafés – the first in the *** was held in 2011 in London, and now there are 3,794 across the ***.
In Scotland there are dozens, from Ullapool to Kirkcudbright, but mostly clustered in cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Discussion topics bounce around at the meetings, from practical advice on wills and power of attorney to more emotional reflections on personal experiences.
They form part of a wider conversation on loss and care, exemplified by May’s Demystifying Death week that aims to help people support each other during traumatic experiences.
Another visitor in Jenny’s group, John Mackay, wrote his PHD about death and the mourning process. He was attending his first death café in Glasgow with the intention of discussing the subject more.
“There’s such a taboo about death, but you can take a lighter look at it,” he says.
“The problem is that people don’t talk about it. If you see funerals from other cultures it’s very loud and very expressive, but in this country it’s very reserved.
“You have to make sure you don’t say the wrong thing and that you wear the right clothes – it would be good to loosen it up as well.”
A perspective on life
Others suggest the greatest benefit of the café is more simple – in that it provides perspective on life.
Spencer Mason previously attempted to end his life, but is currently coping with the end-of-life care of a person close to him.
“I think the more we discuss death then surely the more appreciative you become of life,” he says.
“In circumstances where I’ve become close to death, I’ve come out of them wanting life more than ever.”

Researchers make disturbing discovery after analyzing athletes’ bodies: ‘We’re only just beginning’
Researchers make disturbing discovery after analyzing athletes’ bodies: ‘We’re only just beginning’
The dangers of microplastics are not yet fully understood, but what we do know is that they are everywhere and may be harmful to your health. According to Triathlete, advanced sports dietitian Taryn Richardson believes athletes may be more exposed to these microscopic threats than most.
What’s happening?
While exposure to microplastics is unavoidable no matter who you are, they surround athletes almost by necessity. Athletes eat plastic-wrapped nutrition bars and drink from plastic water bottles, as they’re lightweight and easily handled mid-training or during competition. They wear lightweight, elastic, breathable gear made from plastic materials. They spend plenty of time out in open air and in the water.
Adding to this is the fact that when athletes sweat, their pores open up, making it even easier for microplastics to enter their bodies. This all adds up to a potentially significant health risk that Richardson believes may continue to grow as we learn more about microplastics.
“It’s going to get ******* from here,” Richardson told Triathlete. “We’ve only just been able to quantify [microplastics] in human blood. We’re only just beginning.”
Why is understanding microplastics important?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles one nanometer to five millimeters in size that are either intentionally manufactured or created as larger plastic products break down. They can be found just about anywhere you can imagine: the ocean, the air, the land, our food — even our blood.
In 2022, microplastics were measured in human blood for the first time ever, raising many serious questions about their impact on our health. We know that some plastics contain toxic chemicals and that clogged arteries are potentially deadly, so it follows that microplastics might be seriously dangerous. The science is not entirely clear on this yet, but studies have made some unsettling connections between microplastics and serious illnesses.
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
A recent review of almost 3,000 studies determined that microplastics can potentially contribute to everything from respiratory illness to neurodegenerative diseases to ******* and more. While we don’t truly know the extent of these connections, nor the long-term effects of microplastics in the body, this information it’s alarming to say the least. It’s also critical to know if we want to make informed decisions about our health.
What’s being done about plastic pollution?
Our plastic problem is an overwhelming one, but some brilliant people out there are working to find solutions — such as the Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers who recently developed a more effective plastic recycling process that creates less emissions and uses less energy or the scientists who figured out how to convert plastic into asphalt.
Join our free newsletter for weekly updates on the latest innovations improving our lives and shaping our future, and don’t miss this cool list of easy ways to help yourself while helping the planet.

The countries are finally talking but why now?
The countries are finally talking but why now?
Laura Bicker
China Correspondent
Watch: US and China are ready to talk tariffs – who will blink first?
The US-China trade war could be letting up, with the world’s two largest economies set to begin talks in Switzerland.
Top trade officials from both sides will meet on Saturday in the first high-level meeting since US President Donald Trump hit China with tariffs in January.
Beijing retaliated immediately and a tense stand-off ensued as the two countries heaped levies on each other. Those now stand at 125%, although some ******** imports to the US face duties as high as 245%.
There have been weeks of stern, and sometimes fiery, rhetoric where each side sought to paint the other as the more desperate party.
And yet this weekend they will face each other over the negotiating table.
So why now?
Saving face
Despite multiple rounds of ****-for-tat tariffs, both sides have been sending signals that they want to break the deadlock. Except it wasn’t clear who would blink first.
“Neither side wants to appear to be backing down,” said Stephen Olson, senior visiting fellow at Singapore’s ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and a former US trade negotiator.
“The talks are taking place now because both countries have judged that they can move forward without appearing to have caved in to the other side.”
Still, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasised on Wednesday that “the talks are being held at the request of the US”.
And the commerce ministry framed it as a favour to Washington, saying it was answering the “calls of US businesses and consumers”.
The Trump administration, however, claims it’s ******** officials who “want to do business very much” because “their economy is collapsing”.
“They said we initiated? Well, I think they ought to go back and study their files,” Trump said at the White House on Wednesday.
Getty Images
While ******** trade officials head to Geneva, Xi Jinping is in Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin
But as the talks drew closer, the president struck a more diplomatic note: “We can all play games. Who made the first call, who didn’t make the – it doesn’t matter,” he told reporters on Thursday. “It only matters what happens in that room.”
The timing is also key for Beijing because it’s during Xi’s visit to Moscow. He was a guest of honour on Friday at Moscow’s Victory Day parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the World War Two victory over Nazi Germany.
Xi stood alongside leaders from across the Global South – a reminder to Trump’s administration that China not only has other options for trade, but it is also presenting itself as an alternative global leader.
This allows Beijing to project strength even as it heads to the negotiating table.
The pressure is on
Trump insists that the tariffs will make America stronger, and Beijing has vowed to “fight till the end”- but the fact is the levies are hurting both countries.
Factory output in China has taken a hit, according to government data. Manufacturing activity in April dipped to the lowest level since December 2023. And a survey by news outlet Caixin this week showed that services activity has reached a seven-month low.
The BBC found that ******** exporters have been reeling from the steep tariffs, with stock piling up in warehouses, even as they strike a defiant note and look for markets beyond the US.
“I think [China] realises that a deal is better than no deal,” says Bert Hofman, a professor at the East Asian Institute in National University Singapore.
“So they’ve taken a pragmatic view and said, ‘OK, well we need to get these talks going.'”
And so with the major May Day holiday in China over, officials in Beijing have decided the time is right to talk.
On the other side, the uncertainty caused by tariffs led to the US economy contracting for the first time in three years.
And industries that have long depended on ********-made goods are especially worried. A Los Angeles toy company owner told the BBC that they were “looking at the total implosion of the supply chain”.
BBC/Xiqing Wang
Toys for ***** in China’s Yiwu, the world’s biggest wholesale market – China sold $10bn worth of toys to the US last year
Trump himself has acknowledged that US consumers will feel the sting.
American children may “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls”, he said at a cabinet meeting this month, “and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple bucks more than they would normally”.
Trump’s approval ratings have also slid over fears of inflation and a possible recession, with more than 60% of Americans saying he was focusing too much on tariffs.
“Both countries are feeling pressure to provide a bit of reassurance to increasingly nervous markets, businesses, and domestic constituencies,” Mr Olson says.
“A couple of days of meetings in Geneva will serve that purpose.”
What happens next?
While the talks have been met with optimism, a deal may take a while to materialise.
The talks will mostly be about “touching base”, Mr Hofman said, adding that this could look like an “exchange of positions” and, if things go well, “an agenda [will be] set for future talks”.
The negotiations on the whole are expected to take months, much like what happened during Trump’s first term.
After nearly two years of ****-for-tat tariffs, the US and China signed a “phase one” deal in early 2020 to suspend or reduce some levies. Even then, it did not include thornier issues, such as ******** government subsidies for key industries or a timeline for scrapping the remaining tariffs.
In fact, many of them stayed in place through Joe Biden’s presidency, and Trump’s latest tariffs add to those older levies.
What could emerge this time is a “phase one deal on steroids”, Mr Olson said: that is, it would go beyond the earlier deal and try to address flashpoints. There are many, from the ******** fentanyl trade which Washington wants China to crack down harder on to Beijing’s relationship with Moscow.
But all of that is far down the line, experts warn.
“The systemic frictions that bedevil the US-China trade relationship will not be solved any time soon,” Mr Olson adds.
“Geneva will only produce anodyne statements about ‘frank dialogues’ and the desire to keep talking.”

Toyota lands second Supercars team for 2026 season
Toyota lands second Supercars team for 2026 season
Toyota have unveiled Brad Jones Racing as their second Supercars outfit, leaving General Motors down to four teams for the 2026 season.
Brad Jones Racing joins Toyota’s testing team Walkinshaw Andretti United in making the jump to the GR Supra.
The outfit currently fields four Chevrolet Camaros, driven by Andre Heimgartner, Jaxon Evans, Bryce Fullwood and Macauley Jones.
The Supra model has been redesigned in-house to feature a five-litre V8 engine.
“I’m a creature of habit, and so change is not always easy,” Brad Jones told Fox Sports.
“But once I met with the guys and could spend some time understanding them and they took me through their vision, it seemed very clear that this was a great opportunity I couldn’t miss.
“I think Toyota will be up there or thereabouts. We need to earn our stripes and there’ll be a lot of work, but it’s a very exciting time for the group.”
Brad Jones Racing’s defection to Toyota comes amid a General Motors rebuild following competition heavyweight Triple Eight’s shock move to rival Ford.
The remaining Chevrolet teams are Matt Stone Racing, PremiAir Racing, Erebus Motorsport and new homologation team Team 18.
Out of the four, only Erebus has won a drivers’ and teams’ championship.
General Motors are also pondering the future of the Camaro, after production ceased last year, and a possible extension to 2027 with Supercars.
Toyota will be the first manufacturer other than Ford and General Motors to race in the competition since 2019, when Nissan pulled out of the category.
The automotive giant is no stranger to Australia’s touring cars circuit, with the GR Cup, featuring Toyota 86 coupes, a longtime support category on the Supercars track.
The brand also competes in many motorsport events around the world, including NASCAR and Formula Drift in the United States, Super GT and Super Formula in Japan and Formula Three in Europe.

Enormous, rarely seen basking shark appears off Cape Cod; ‘Holy cow, look at this!’
Sometimes during whale-watching expeditions, another type of creature grabs the spotlight merely by showing up.
The accompanying footage shows a massive basking shark alongside a Cape Cod whale-watching vessel on Thursday, and the excitement was palpable in the naturalist’s voice.
“This is incredible! This is an enormous shark, folks!” the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch naturalist informs her astonished passengers via microphone. “Holy cow, look at this!

Basking sharks are the planet’s second-largest living shark and fish, next to whale sharks, and can measure 40 feet.
The migratory, filter-feeding sharks are categorized as “Vulnerable” throughout their range and “Endangered” in the northeast Atlantic, and sightings are rare off Cape Cod.
When these prehistoric-looking behemoths are spotted, they usually have their mouths agape to take in water and filter out zooplankton.
According to the Florida Museum, “Many tales of sea serpents and monsters have originated from sightings of basking sharks cruising single file, snout to tail, near the surface of the water.”
The lucky passengers aboard the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch vessel saw three basking sharks on Thursday. The company has promised more images and video footage via social media.

The Hollywood films made in the ***
The Hollywood films made in the ***
Getty Images
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, starring Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was partially filmed in Scotland
“Lights, camera… tariff?” – that’s the question a scrambling movie industry has been asking this week after an unexpected intervention from US President Donald Trump.
Writing on his Truth Social platform last Sunday, Trump announced plans to hit movies made in foreign countries with 100% tariffs, as he attempts to stop Hollywood dying “a very fast death”.
His threat comes as studios increasingly shift productions abroad to places such as the ***.
The White House has since clarified that “no final decision” has been made and that they’re “exploring all options” for revitalising the US film industry.
But Trump’s suggestion alone has sent shockwaves through the industry – from Hollywood to Hertfordshire – so what might all of this mean in practice?
Getty Images
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, starring Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, was filmed at Pinewood Studios
In 2014, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was shot by Disney at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, and Hollywood has kept growing closer to the *** since.
Last year alone, the British Film Institute says 65% of *** production spend came from the five major US film studios and three US streaming giants – Netflix, Apple and Amazon. This amounted to £1.37bn ($1.71bn), a near 50% jump on 2023.
In Hollywood, by contrast, film and television production in Los Angeles has dropped by nearly 40% over the past decade.
The reason? Well largely, it’s cheaper to make films in the ***. That’s thanks to generous tax incentives such as the Film Tax Relief, which offers a 25% tax rebate – as well as lower labour costs and centralised national funding for film.
As British actor Brian Cox told Times Radio on Tuesday: “The reality is films go where they can afford.”
For Universal’s blockbuster Jurassic World: Dominion, these incentives delivered a reported £89.1m ($111.38m) in savings.
Getty Images
Universal made £89m in savings by shooting Jurassic World: Dominion in the *** (actress Laura Dern pictured at the film’s premiere)
In the US, tax incentives operate on a state level – and Hollywood has relatively poor tax breaks – not only compared with the ***, which can offer 10% more, but other states such as New York and Georgia, too.
Fixing that is no easy task. Trump has appointed Golden Globe Award-winning actor Jon Voight, 86, as a special ambassador to Hollywood, and met with him a day before dropping his light-on-detail proposal.
But it’s not exactly clear how tariffs would solve the internal tax problem in the US. A possible solution, raised by Voight, is a federal tax incentive to mirror the ***.
The Wrap’s film reporter Jeremy Fuster tells the BBC it is “unlikely”, in the current highly-charged climate, that Republicans would “support a federal tax incentive that can easily be portrayed as a handout to ‘woke Hollywood'”.
And what would the impact be on moviegoers if the levy goes ahead?
Fuster says costs, like any other tariffed good, would be passed onto audiences through ticket prices, premium on-demand increases or subscription rates.
How exactly this would take form is “something nobody knows”.
It’s not all about the money, because while a boost to US production could benefit parts of the industry, some projects will still need to shoot abroad. “Amazon isn’t going to make the next James Bond entirely in America,” Fuster notes.
Culture minister Sir Chris Bryant has said the *** government is in “active discussions with the top of the US administration” on the “very fluid” situation.
With all this in mind, do you know which films have been made in the *** in recent years? BBC News has looked at some below – and they might be closer to home than you think.
Barbie and Oz in HertfordshireWarner Bros
Barbie’s pink paradise was a set built at Warner Bros studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire
Warner Bros Leavesden studio in Hertfordshire, best known for producing the Harry Potter films, has been used as the set for numerous Hollywood blockbusters including Barbie, Mickey 17, Venom: The Last Dance and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
The nearby Sky Studios Elstree in Borehamwood was turned into the magical world of Oz in 2023 as it welcomed its first production, Wicked.
Thrillers in GlasgowGetty Images
George Square in Glasgow was used to replicate Philadelphia in Brad Pitt’s World War Z
Beyond Hertfordshire, cities such as Glasgow have long been used as a filming hub for Hollywood movies.
The opening scene of Brad Pitt’s zombie thriller, World War Z, may look like Philadelphia, but the film was actually shot in George Square in the Scottish city.
In November, the city was transformed into a dystopian New York as Glen Powell was spotted filming for forthcoming thriller The Running Man.
Indiana Jones spans Glasgow and northern EnglandLucasfilm
Glasgow city centre was transformed into 1960s New York for the latest Indiana Jones film
It’s not just dystopian films that are shot in Glasgow – in 2021, star-spangled banners, bunting and vintage shop fronts decorated the streets of Glasgow city centre for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
The city was used for a parade scene which appears to capture 1960s New York as Apollo astronauts return home.
The latest Indiana Jones movie was also shot in Northern England with Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland being used in the opening scenes.
The castle doubled up for 1944 war-torn Nazi Germany.
Other scenes were shot along the North York Moors railway line in Grosmont, and the Leaderfoot Viaduct, over the River Tweed, near Melrose, in the Scottish Borders.
The Batman in LiverpoolGetty Images
The Liver Building’s clock tower doubled up as Gotham City Police Department
In 2022, The Batman used Glasgow Cathedral, the Necropolis and the Bridge of Sighs to create Gotham City, which is based on New York.
Speaking to the BBC in 2022 about the choice in filming location, director Matt Reeves said it was important to film in a location where there was “beautiful Gothic architecture”.
“I wanted this to feel like a Gothic American city, but one that you’d never been to,” he said. “So we went to Glasgow and honestly it was so beautiful.”
The film’s lead actor, Robert Pattinson, said: “It looks great as Gotham, who would’ve thought of all the cities in the world, Glasgow as Gotham?”
Central Saint Martins art school in London was also used as a building in Gotham City, as was some parts of Liverpool.
Keen-eyed fans will spot that Gotham City Police Department is actually the Liver Building’s clock tower, although the giant Liver Bird was airbrushed out.
Spider-Man and Captain America in ManchesterMEN Syndication
New York or Manchester’s Northern Quarter?
Spider-Man spin-off Morbius was filmed in Manchester’s Northern Quarter and in 2010, the city became 1940s Brooklyn for Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans.
Liverpool’s early 20th Century buildings has also made it a popular stand-in for New York’s older skyscrapers. Liverpool was transformed into 1920s New York for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which sees Eddie Redmayne search the city for his escaped magical beasts.
Snow White in WalesNetflix
Swansea University’s bay campus became a busy city street where Forest Whitaker’s character is waiting in gridlocked traffic
Disney’s recent live-action Snow White movie was almost entirely filmed in the ***, with Pinewood Studios used for many indoor scenes and sets.
A quarry in the Lake District, a beach in Pembrokshire, Wales and a nature reserve in Burnham were all also used as shooting locations.
As well as Snow White, Netflix’s new thriller Havoc, starring Tom Hardy and set in an unnamed US city, was filmed in Wales.
The film’s Welsh director Gareth Evans, said it was “challenging” to recreate a US city in south Wales, but he wanted to bring more work to the area.
Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall doubled up as the exterior of a fictional city police station while Cardiff’s Bute Street was turned into a US boulevard with 30cm (12in) of fake snow for one of Havoc’s night-time scenes.
Other blockbusters filmed in ***
Other recent Hollywood blockbusters that have seen the majority of their filming – known as principal photography – in the ***, include:
Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)Back in Action (2025)A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)

Marjorie Taylor Greene says she won’t run for Senate against Jon Ossoff
Marjorie Taylor Greene says she won’t run for Senate against Jon Ossoff
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Friday she will not run in next year’s Georgia Senate race, a closely watched contest as Republicans hope to eject Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff.
“I’m not running,” Greene, a Georgia Republican and staunch Trump ally, wrote in a post on X that excoriated Senate Republicans, saying she “won’t fight for a team that refuses to win.”
Greene’s decision came days after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who was widely seen as a top contender for the Senate seat, chose not to seek the Republican nomination Monday, leaving the primary field largely open.
Georgia GOP Rep. Buddy Carter entered the Senate race Thursday, branding himself a “MAGA Warrior” and a close ally of President Trump’s.
The Georgia seat is important to both parties’ Senate ambitions. Republicans are looking to oust Ossoff to expand their 53-47 majority in the chamber, while holding onto the seat could be crucial to Democrats’ efforts to win control of the Senate.
Recent elections in Georgia have been razor-thin, despite the state’s history as a reliably conservative state. Ossoff won his seat by less than two points in a 2021 Senate runoff. And Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock was reelected by under three points in 2022.
First elected in 2020, Greene is one of the House Republican caucus’ best-known — and most polarizing — members, known for her heated rhetoric, hard-right views and clashes with her party’s leadership. She’s also a prolific fundraiser, and a Trump loyalist: Mr. Trump said in 2023 he would “fight like hell” to elect Greene to the Senate if she chose to run.
But Greene’s polling numbers against Ossoff lagged behind Kemp’s. One hypothetical Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll from last month showed Ossoff leading her 54%-37%. Kemp, meanwhile, led Ossoff 49%-46% — within the 3.1-point margin of error.
Before making his public announcement, Kemp told Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina — chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee — he would not run for Senate, noting concerns from his family, a source familiar with the matter told CBS News.
However, Kemp is still considering his future in the party and may have higher aspirations, according to a senior GOP operative.

Fed holds steady, Bitcoin climbs and Ethereum rolls out major upgrade
Fed holds steady, Bitcoin climbs and Ethereum rolls out major upgrade
The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at 4.25% to 4.5% during its latest meeting, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaking to emphasize caution and data dependence amid ongoing economic uncertainty. Despite the decision, markets remained flat. Analysts now predict the Fed may consider rate cuts in July or September if the economy weakens further.
Trade tensions remain high, with the U.S. locked in an escalating tariff war. However, a key development came when China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed that talks with the U.S. over tariffs will resume. Both economies have been hit by the standoff, and the potential thaw in relations was welcomed by markets. Bitcoin responded with a sharp move upward on May 6, briefly tapping $97,000.
In a historic move, New Hampshire became the first U.S. state to approve a Bitcoin Strategic Reserve. The bill (HB302) allows the state treasurer to purchase Bitcoin or any digital asset with a market cap over $500 billion, currently only Bitcoin. Purchases are capped at 5% of total state funds.
Ethereum developers activated the long-awaited Pectra upgrade on May 7, two days earlier than expected. The upgrade includes 11 changes aimed at improving user experience, validator operations, and Layer 2 scaling. Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin called it a major step toward a fully decentralized global system. Despite the technical leap, $ETH prices remained largely unchanged.
Bitwise filed for a spot $NEAR ETF, continuing the trend of top asset managers focusing on U.S.-based crypto assets. Meanwhile, the SEC delayed its decision on Canary Capital’s proposed spot $LTC ETF, requesting more public comments and citing concerns about market manipulation.
Hedera recently enabled ERC-20 token support through HashPack and SaucerSwap. EVM compatibility is also now live via WalletConnect, Fireblocks, and Copper, following the successful Chainlink CCIP integration.

Kara Weipz learned from a news report her brother had died in the 1988 Lockerbie plane bombing
Richard Monetti was aged just 20 when he was flying home to New York from London for the Christmas holidays, after studying abroad as one of 35 students from Syracuse University.
But he and everyone else on the plane never made it home.
They lost their lives in the ***’s worst terror atrocity, when a bomb in the hold of their flight, Pan Am 103, exploded above the Scottish town of Lockerbie.
It killed 270 people from 21 countries, including 11 people on the ground, and this devastating event has now been dramatised in an upcoming BBC drama series, The Bombing of Pan Am 103.
Kara Weipz still recalls how she and her family found out her brother Richard was among the dead – they heard it for the first time on a news report about the bombing.
As well as adding to their trauma, she says it also highlighted faults in the response system for victims’ families.
“I think it was very important to make sure those lessons were learned – like families had to be notified before names could be released,” she tells BBC News.
“We didn’t have that luxury in 1988, when names were released before we were notified. So that’s something that came out of it, and changed as a result.”
As president of the Victims of Pan Am Flight 103 group, a role she took on from her father Bob Monetti, she says it’s crucial that relatives “know what rights they have”, while stressing the group’s role in “educating those who deal with victims”.
Those lessons went on to improve how victims’ families were treated in the aftermath of 9/11, when four planes flying over the eastern US were seized simultaneously by hijackers, killing 2,977 people.
Screenwriter Gillian Roger Park, who was born just a couple of days before the Lockerbie bombing and grew up not far from the Scottish town, is a co-writer on the series.
It dramatises the Scots-US investigation into the attack, the effect it had on victims’ families and how it impacted Lockerbie’s locals.
Reuters
Emergency service workers gathered next to the wreckage of Pan Am flight 103, in a farmer’s field east of Lockerbie in 1988
Roger Park says the families “made history”, by speaking out about flaws in the system.
“After their lobbying and campaigning, a lot of the protocols introduced in the aftermath of 9/11 were based on what they campaigned for,” she says.
Airlines also benefited from their experiences.
“A lot of Pan Am 103 family members trained airlines on how to deal with victims,” she adds.
Kathryn Turman, played in the series by Severance actress Merritt Wever, was head of the Office for Victims of Crime, for the US Department of Justice.
Turman arranged travel for family members plus secure closed-circuit viewing in the US, for the trial of two bombing suspects in the Netherlands, in 2000. The FBI notes this was unprecedented at the time.
Weipz adds: “We have victim services in the FBI, in the Department of Justice, in the US Attorney’s office. Why? Well, because of Kathryn, but also because of the Pan Am 103 families.”
Turman’s character poignantly says in one of the episodes: “The families should have been protected and prioritised from the start… we can’t make that mistake again.”
BBC/World Productions
Characters like FBI agent ***** Marquise (Patrick J Adams) and Kathryn Turman (Merritt Wever), who helped victims’ families, represent the work of many people
The drama also highlights that lobbying by *** and US-based family groups resulted in “key reforms, from strengthening travel warning systems and tighter baggage screening, to people-centred responses to major disasters”.
For the series’ lead writer Jonathan Lee, creating a factual drama 37 years later was also a way of exploring the human stories behind the horror.
A co-production with Netflix, the show shines a light on “the story of these small, but heroic acts of connective humanity, in the wake of this bomb that tried to blast things apart”, he says.
For such a dark topic, it has some surprisingly uplifting moments.
We witness the strength of bonds forged between people, in the wake of the bombing.
“Collaboration between families, countries and law enforcement agencies gets us from the worst of humanity to the best of it”, former lawyer Lee tells the BBC.
“We piece things together by working together.”

Peter Mullan [centre] plays Detective Chief Superintendent John Orr, who initially led the investigation
The series is something of a jigsaw – we see the police and FBI painstakingly process thousands of fragments of evidence, in the build-up to Abdulbaset Al Megrahi being convicted over the bombing in 2001.
Two years later, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi accepted his country’s responsibility for the bombing, and paid compensation to the victims’ families.
The other pieces in the TV drama’s puzzle focus on the lives of the people of Lockerbie and beyond, with volunteers stepping up to help traumatised families.
Weipz recalled one scene in the drama, where her father tries to reach a financial settlement for his son’s death with the Pan Am insurance panel.
“That was one of the worst days of my life… hearing your brother really had no value because he was 20 years old, and was an assistant manager at a swim club and mowed lawns…
“Watching it, you see how horrifying it was.”
BBC/World Productions
Moira Shearer (Phyllis Logan), constable Lauren Aitken (Molly Geddes) and Elma Pringle (Cora Bissett) helped with victims’ belongings
We also see women from Lockerbie, who made endless cakes for the investigators, washed victims’ clothes before they were returned to families and showed relatives the spot where their loved ones died.
“It was important to flesh out those emotional, human stories, to bring the Scottish stories to life,” says Roger Park about the volunteers.
“They did such hard work and it wasn’t their jobs, they were just locals who felt a moral obligation to help.
“Those women are just like my gran, I know those types of women, and I just think we rarely centre on those kinds of domestic stories.
“And what strong stuff you’d have to be made of to do what they did. I just love that they used the tools of their domestic lives to do such heroic work.”
BBC/World Productions
Ella Ramsden, played by Estrid Barton, was one of the volunteers from Lockerbie who laundered victims’ clothes
New York-based Michelle Lipkin, whose father Frank Ciulla was killed on the flight, speaks fondly about “the women who laundered the clothes”, including Ella Ramsden and Moira Shearer.
“My mother was close to Ella and Moira, and we see Moira when we go to Scotland,” she says.
“There’s no words to describe the gratitude we have for them, because our loved ones were murdered.
“It’s the most evil of evil, and so every piece of clothing they laundered, every meal they made for the searchers – that just brought back what is possible, and the human spirit and kindness.”
Weipz also speaks about the “compassion” shown by the people of Lockerbie in the hours after the bombing.
“People slept outside with the bodies too. They didn’t want them to be alone. It just overwhelms me at the times when I think about it,” she says.
BBC/World Productions
The drama shows the investigation’s impact on the family life of Det Sgt Ed McCusker (Connor Swindells) and June McCusker (Lauren Lyle)
Scottish actress Lauren Lyle plays June, the wife of Det Sgt Ed McCusker, one of the lead Scottish police officers.
She says although the investigation was a “male-heavy story because it was the 80s”, she also thinks “the women just stepped right up”, often behind the scenes.
Lyle spoke to the real-life Ed McCusker to research her role, and says: “About five years ago, June got *******, and she knew she was going to die. And she said to Eddie, ‘One thing I want you to do is make sure you tell this story’.
“She sounded like a really formidable woman who held the family together, and I think she represents the people of Lockerbie.”
Weipz adds: “Maybe people watching this will take some of the compassion they see, and pay it forward – we need some more of that in the world these days.”

‘No regrets’, Olakau’atu reveals Origin flip over melee
‘No regrets’, Olakau’atu reveals Origin flip over melee
Almost a year on from his spectacular State of Origin brain snap, Haumole Olakau’atu insists he has no regrets as NSW selectors weigh up whether to recall the Manly enforcer to the Blues’ starting side.
On form, Olakau’atu commands a place in Michael Maguire’s 17-man squad as NSW open their series defence in Brisbane on May 28.
Dropped for game three last year, Olakau’atu has been Manly’s best in 2025, fashioning more tackle breaks then any other second-rower over the opening 10 rounds while being tied for most run metres and second for line breaks, runs and try assists.
Now it’s up to Blues selectors to decide if they can trust the hot-head after the 26-year-old’s infamous involvement in an off-field melee while not even playing in the 2024 series decider in Brisbane.
Olakau’atu was evicted from the field after a scuffle between NSW and Queensland players spilt over the sidelines at Suncorp Stadium.
Dressed in a Blues blazer, Olakau’atu grabbed Maroons winger Valentine Holmes as players from both sides came together.
The reserve forward was forced to watch the game from the dressing room before being banned from entering the field of play at the end to celebrate a famous victory.
The day after, Olakau’atu said he wished he hadn’t reacted like he did.
But 10 months on and he has had a change of tune, saying he was merely instinctively protecting his teammates.
“Definitely no regrets there,” Olakau’atu told AAP ahead of Manly’s Mother’s Day hosting of Cronulla on Sunday.
“But my actions in the moment, I wasn’t thinking.
“Do I look back at it and think it’s such a silly thing to do? Yes, definitely.
“But do I don’t regret it? No. I just seen red and just acted naturally to that situation.
“But, yeah, I definitely do not recommend it for any future players out there that are sitting on the sidelines, especially if you’re wearing a suit.”
Olakau’atu knows his numbers this season have him right in the frame for Origin selection.
But he also knows he would have to leapfrog incumbent back-row starters Liam Martin and Angus Crichton and in-form Canberra firebrand Hudson Young for a Blues spot.
“Stats are stats, you know what I mean? But when it comes to the moment, if I get picked, I get picked.
“If I don’t, I don’t. I’ve just got to accept it and and move on so I can only control what I can.
“So for now, I’m just trying to put my best foot forward for Manly and see where I end up.”
He does, though, readily concede being dropped for last year’s series decider still stings.
“I would be lying if I said it didn’t,” Olakau’atu said.
“Don’t get me wrong, Mitch Barnett – ‘Barney’ he deserved every second of it but, look, it’s hard you’re a back-rower on the bench.
“You’ve already got two very good back-rowers already starting, so it was it was hard for me position wise.
“It was hard but it I think it was the right choice for Madge.”
Olakau’atu has two more games to try to force Maguire’s hand.
His immediate focus is on atoning for the Sharks’ spoiling his 100-game celebration with a 24-18 victory over the Sea Eagles in Perth last month.
“Definitely still trying to get my revenge,” Olakau’atu said.
“You all know that game in Perth, especially being my milestone as well.
“We didn’t get the win and we don’t want to lose to them twice.”

High School Best Friends Were Laid Next to Each Other ‘Holding Hands’ After Being Killed in Car ****** on Way to Prom: Report
Teenage best friends Kiea McCann, 17, and Dlava Mohammed, 16, were laid next to one another “holding hands” after they were killed in a car ****** in July 2023, according to testimony during a sentencing hearing
The victims had been traveling to a high school prom at the time of the incident
Anthony McGinn, 61, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of the teenagers and is set to be sentenced next week, per reports
Two teenage best friends were laid next to each other “holding hands” after they were killed in a car ****** in Ireland, one of the girl’s mothers said during a sentencing hearing at the Monaghan Circuit Court for the man who pleaded guilty to causing their deaths.
Kiea McCann, 17, and Dlava Mohammed, 16, were fatally injured on July 31, 2023 after the car they were traveling to their high school prom in struck a tree at approximately 75 mph, per The Irish Times.
Anthony McGinn, 61, who was driving the victims to the event at the Westenra Arms Hotel in Monaghan, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of the teenagers in January, the BBC previously reported.
The suspect was also charged with dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Dlava’s sister, Avin Mohammed, who was also in the car but survived, the outlet noted.
The victims were laid next to one another “holding hands” following the ******, per The Telegraph. The ****** took place on the N54 road at Legnakelly, just outside Clones, the Raidió Teilifís Eireann (RTÉ) stated.

Kiea’s mother, Teresa, said in court that she’d “trusted” McGinn to drive her daughter to the prom. “When we got to the scene, Kiea was already gone. Her dad tried CPR on her. Nothing would bring her back,” she said, per The Telegraph.
“Kiea and her best friend were robbed of their lives. They were put side by side holding hands on the grass as me and my husband lay beside them,” she added, according to the outlet.
Passenger Oisin Clerkin had been sitting in the front seat at the time of the ******, and asked the suspect to slow down, The Telegraph reported.

“He was driving really fast and it scared me. None of the girls said anything. Kiea looked scared. I said ‘Goodbye’ to Kiea and I woke up in hospital” Clerkin told the Republic of Ireland’s police force, the Gardaí, in a statement.
Dashcam footage of the ******, taken from a vehicle traveling behind the suspect’s car, was played during a sentencing hearing on Wednesday, May 7, per The Irish Times. It showed the road had been wet at the time of the incident due to rain.
On the day of the ******, McGinn “had called over to the McCann family home before they all gathered at a pub in Clones” ahead of the school prom, the RTÉ stated.
Kiea’s father, Frankie, told the court that his daughter will “never know her first love, get married or have a child of her own,” per the broadcasting company, while Dlava’s father, Mohammed, said in a victim impact statement read out by Inspector Lardner that his daughter was a “piece of his heart.”
Mohammed said that the family had moved to Ireland from Syria to start a new life, but added that his daughter’s dreams were “now buried with her,” the RTÉ stated.
Kiea’s father said his daughter’s death was a “death sentence” for the family, and her mom said Kiea’s 18th birthday present had been a headstone, The Telegraph reported.
Dlava’s sister Avin, who was seriously injured in the ******, said, “My sister came with me [to prom] because I had no one else to go with.” She added that “everything changed” as soon as they got into McGinn’s car, per The Irish Times. Avin remembered asking the driver to stop, before she said everything went ******, and she woke up with serious injuries in the hospital.

Defense barrister Breffni Gordon noted that McGinn had been seriously injured in the ****** and “formally apologizes to the family and friends of the victims,” the RTÉ stated.
McGinn is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday, May 14.
The Monaghan Circuit Criminal Court didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information, and the Gardaí said it wasn’t able to comment “on named individuals” or on “matters before the courts.”

Jack Doohan: Alpine F1 driver target of threats with security tightened before Franco Colapinto handover
The fallout from *********** F1 star Jack Doohan’s disastrous debut season has taken a dark turn as revelations surface that Team Alpine have had to implement private security for the youngster after continual threats.
As Alpine moved to elevate Franco Colapinto to replace Doohan after the Aussie suffered a puncture on lap one and another DNF in the Miami Grand Prix, serious concerns about personal security and genuine threat levels have been raised
F1 photographer Kym Illman has spoken to GP Fans and revealed Doohan’s family and close friends were concerned for his safety.
Alpine confirmed that Doohan will be replaced by Franco Colapinto for the next five races at least by Colapinto, whose supporter base allegeedly took things into their own hands and made sovial media threats the beseiged driver.
Following Doohan’s axing, Illman said via Instagram that the threats toward the Doohan had been received from a small ********* of Colapinto’s fanbase, and were serious enough for Alpine to employ extra security.
“He was receiving all sorts of threats online so much so that he had around-the-clock security in Miami and was planning on keeping that security for the Brazilian Grand Prix,” Illman said..
“It was plain to see by those close to the Aussie that those threats weighed heavily on him.
“People had discovered his personal email address and were sending email threats which resulted in Jack, his girlfriend and even his father holding real concerns for their safety in Miami and on top of that, Jack’s sleep was affected.
“I’m certain Franco wouldn’t be endorsing any of that behaviour from what is a ********* of his fanbase.”
Doohan’s departure also follows the news that Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes has resigned from the team with immediate effect, and executive Flavio Briatore will step up to cover his duties.
On Doohan’s demotion to reserve driver, Alpine said: “As part of an on-going assessment of its driver line-up, the team has made the decision to rotate one of its race seats for the next five rounds of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship.
“BWT Alpine Formula One Team therefore announces that Franco Colapinto will be paired with Pierre Gasly from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, ahead of a new evaluation before the British Grand Prix in July.
“Jack Doohan remains an integral part of the team and will be the first-choice Reserve Driver for this ******* of time.”

Man, 89, Confirmed as First Victim of Fatal ****** Bear Attack in Florida History After Remains Found Inside Animal
An 89-year-old man and his dog have died in a ****** bear attack in southwest Florida, marking the first confirmed fatal attack in the state’s history
Jerome, Fla., resident Robert Markel was found dead 100 yards away from his home, and DNA was found on his body from a 263-pound male ****** bear
Officials have only documented 42 incidents where wild ****** bears have made physical contact with people in Florida since the 1970s
An 89-year-old man and his dog have died in a ****** bear attack in southwest Florida — the first of its kind confirmed fatal attack in the state’s history.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), authorities were called to the home of 89-year-old Robert Markel in Jerome, Fla. — a rural unincorporated community located about 40 miles southeast of Naples — soon after 7 a.m. on Monday, May 5, where they discovered his body about 100 yards outside of his home.
The FWC said in a press release that Markel’s family members reported him missing and said that there were signs of recent disturbances that could have been caused by a bear around the property.

Big Cypress National Preserve, located near Markel’s home.
FWC investigators said that they found evidence of “a physical encounter between a bear and a person near the residence, a dog recently killed by a bear in close proximity to a person and signs that a bear had entered the residence itself.”
In its statement, the FWC confirmed that this was the first fatal ****** bear attack in Florida’s history, although humans have previously been scratched and bitten by bears in the state.
The organization added that circumstances surrounding the attack met requirements for three bears living in the nearby South Bear Management Unit to be euthanized and for their DNA to be collected, including three adult male bears weighing 207, 263 and 434 pounds. FWC staff also attempted to trap a fourth bear but were unsuccessful.

“The three carcasses were immediately transported to laboratories in Gainesville for necropsy and testing, along with DNA samples collected from physical evidence at the scene,” officials said.
According to the FWC, the exact sequence of events is still unclear, but DNA samples from the testing revealed on Friday that the 263-pound male’s body contained Markel’s partial remains.
DNA results also showed that the 263-pound male’s DNA was present on Markel, inside his house and on his dog’s body, per the FWC, and all three bears tested negative for rabies.

Law enforcement and bear management staff have been observing the property for more bears since Monday, and only briefly saw one additional bear on Thursday night, which quickly left the area.
“We want to thank the family for their cooperation as they navigate this challenging time, and our thoughts remain with them,” FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto said in a statement. “I am proud of our staff’s professional response and support for the family as they faced an unfathomable event this week.”
According to the FWC, no other species of bear is found in Florida, and there are estimated to be around 4,050 across the state. The South Bear Management Unit, where Jerome is located, contains the third largest population of bears in the state, estimated at 1,044 in 2015, the organization added.
The PEOPLE App is now available in the Apple App Store! Download it now for the most binge-worthy celeb content, exclusive video clips, astrology updates and more!
The press release states that the FWC has only documented 42 incidents where wild ****** bears have made physical contact with people since the 1970s. Only three of those incidents resulted in serious injuries requiring medical attention, excluding the fatal attack this week.
According to the organization’s website, anyone living near bears should never feed the animals, keep garbage, food and livestock secure, and be aware of their surrounding while walking dogs.
“Please contact the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) if you feel threatened by a bear; observe a sick, injured, dead, or orphaned bear; or to report someone who is either harming bears or intentionally feeding them,” the press release said.
The FWC added that the investigation into the fatal attack is still ongoing and will remain open until testing is complete.

There’s a new AI agent ready to browse the web and fill in forms without the need to touch your mouse
Hugging Face has debuted an AI tool for navigating the web on your behalf
The Open Computer Agent uses a real web browser to complete tasks like getting directions or booking tickets
The agent and its open-source demo can see what’s on screen, click buttons, fill out forms, and move step-by-step through tasks like a human
Hugging Face has introduced its own take on the growing number of semi-independent AI agents that can run online errands for people. The new and free (if limited) Open Computer Agent is like having a personal assistant living inside your web browser.
Part of the company’s ongoing “smolagents” initiative, the Open Computer Agent can engage with websites and apps like you would, handling an invisible mouse and keyboard to complete requests. The AI can open a browser, type things into forms, click buttons, and more. Ask it to find directions, and it’ll go to Google Maps, enter the origin and destination, and show you the route like a dutiful digital chauffeur.
You can try it yourself with the live demo. Fair warning, its popularity is causing some delays and errors due to a backlog.

Agent AI
The Open Computer Agent is a different philosophy of an idea that has led to similar tools like OpenAI’s Operator, Browser Use, Proxy 1.0, and Opera’s Browser Operator. Like those tools, Hugging Face’s AI agent is all about being an active participant instead of a passive source of information.
Like Browser Use, Open Computer Agent is open-source, meaning anyone can see how it works and build on top of it, or at least tweak it for niche use cases. The agent is the start of something more flexible, not a finished product with a million legal disclaimers. That also means the demo is exactly that, a demonstration, not a polished package. It can get things wrong and require you to jump in for logins and CAPTCHA tests.
Booking tickets, checking store hours, doing searches, looking up directions, and clicking through menus are all things a lot of people would like to be able to do with a single natural language prompt. It’s one thing to ask ChatGPT how to find cheap flights. It’s another to watch a tool go to a travel website, scroll through listings, and attempt to click “book now.”
It might be flawed and far from flashy, but Open Computer Agent represents an approach to AI that might become as common as the now ubiquitous AI image generators.

UFC 315: Jack Della Maddalena on the verge of WA sporting history with title fight against Belal Muhammad
UFC 315: Jack Della Maddalena on the verge of WA sporting history with title fight against Belal Muhammad
Jack Della Maddalena is on the verge of creating *********** mixed martial arts history.
Should the man known as “JDM” end Belal Muhammad’s welterweight championship reign at UFC 315 in Montreal on Sunday morning he will become the first West *********** UFC champion.
He knows a victory though could be ******* for the sport and his family than just his legacy.
Della Maddalena (17-2) has not fought since he knocked out former title contender Gilbert Burns in March of last year – his seventh consecutive win in the Octagon.
It was the biggest victory of his fledging career which skyrocketed when the former rugby player earned a spot in the UFC through the Dana White Contender Series Reality show nearly four years ago.
Long touted as an exciting prospect on the regional MMA scene, Della Maddalena is now only a win away from joining Wollongong’s Alexander Volkanovski as an *********** UFC champion.
And while history beckons, Della Maddalena said a win was also about setting a strong example for his son Franco, daughter Paloma and the wider WA mixed martial arts community.
“To come home and be the first West *********** champ would be great. Bringing back the title to reside in Australia is going to be awesome,” he said.
Camera IconJack Della Maddalena will fight Belal Muhammad (left) on Sunday. Credit: Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC
“Even just bringing the belt to my gym (Scrappy MMA) is something I’ve dreamed of, and I’ve put a lot of effort in to get there. It’s going to be surreal. I don’t know how I will feel, I think it will live up to the expectations of how I think it’s going to go.
“To be able to show my son that while a lot of people say you can do what you want, to be able to show him if you put your mind to something, you put the work in and you truly believe in yourself that you really can do anything you want.
“And for anybody, to show you can do whatever you want no matter where you’re from. It’s good values for young kids.”
Della Maddalena will go into the fight as the underdog and it will be a bout of contrasting styles, with the West *********** known as one of the best strikers in the UFC.
Muhammad (24-3) is a renowned wrestler, with 18 of his 24-career wins coming via decision including beating Leon Edwards in five rounds last year to claim the title.
Della Maddalena has long spruiked that he plans to end the champion’s reign within the five rounds and avoid being taken down by the grappler.
“The gameplan is the usual. I’m going to try to damage him, try and take him out,” he said.
“Keep my distance, not let him get too involved in the grappling and stop the takedowns. Everyone thinks I can’t wrestle, but I will snuff his takedowns and let him know he’s not going to get me down easy and it’s going to be a hard fight for him.
“Start this reign off with a nice finish and show everyone there’s a new king in the welterweight division.”
Della Maddalena has no shortage of *********** fighters in his corner and has benefitted from training and picking the brain of featherweight champion Volkanovski at a training camp.
“I spent some time with Volk before he went over to fight (Diego) Lopez. He’s had all the experience you could want, multiple title fights, defended it multiple times and he’s just won it back,” he said.
“I learnt a lot from Volk, he’s been an inspiration throughout my whole career.
“He went over some details and stuff, but nothing too crazy. He just gave me confidence, told me to do my thing and believes I will win. I believe I will win.
“He told me not to let the moment get too me too much is a big part of it, not get caught up with what it means and just stroll out there and do what me and him love to do which is get in there and compete and fight.”
While the 28-year-old is ready for the biggest fight of his life it has been 14 months since his last with a badly broken arm and subsequent infection not only costing him time on the mat but also a chance to fight again in his home city last year.

“I feel fresh and I’m just itching to get back in there,” he said.
“I’ve been sitting on the sidelines for some time watching every fight go by and wishing to get back in there.

Woman Spits on D.C.’s U.S. Attorney Ed Martin in Live Interview
Woman Spits on D.C.’s U.S. Attorney Ed Martin in Live Interview
A passerby spat on Washington D.C’s interim U.S. attorney, Ed Martin, as he was giving a live interview.
The incident was captured on video, which went viral.
“We need to get really focused,” Martin started saying to the television reporter, when the unidentified woman pointed her finger at him before spitting at him and then walking off.
According to The New York Post, when the incident happened, Martin was speaking about the withdrawal of his nomination to be the permanent U.S. attorney to Newsmax on May 8, 2025. Fox News host Jeanine Pirro was nominated instead to be U.S. attorney for the Washington D.C. district.
It appeared the woman was simply walking past when she spotted Martin because she was also walking a dog.
“You are Ed Martin,” the woman said before spitting on him.
“You are a disgusting man,” the woman also shouted. Martin looked shocked in the video as the incident unfolded.
According to The New York Post, after concerns were raised about his nomination, it was decided that he would be an associate deputy attorney general and pardon attorney instead.
Martin’s nomination to be U.S. attorney failed after Republican North Carolina senator Thom Tillis indicated he would not back him, which would mean there were not enough votes in the U.S. Senate to get him through, according to Newsweek.
Newsweek noted that the woman also used an expletive during the incident, which occurred while Martin was appearing on The Chris Salcedo Show.
In January, Martin was named the interim U.S. attorney.
