The woman unlocking the mysteries of the deep sea in Fiji
The woman unlocking the mysteries of the deep sea in Fiji
On the island of Rotuma in Fiji, Christmas is a time of joy, a celebration bursting with song, dance and laughter. Charlene Erasito remembers watching the festivities there when she was a child, captivated as people paraded through the village for “fara,” a local Christmas celebration.
Related: Trawl the sea or mine for metals? Pacific nations wrestle with how to protect oceans – and livelihoods
Erasito never imagined that decades later, she would return to the same shores, no longer as a spectator but as a scientist. Erasito, now 30 years old, is the only female Pacific Islander aboard an ambitious expedition seeking to document unexplored ocean ecosystems in Fijian waters.
The months-long project, led by National Geographic Pristine Seas, began in April with a crew of local and international experts. It starts with deep sea exploration and will later examine shallower parts of the ocean. The expedition began in Fiji and will also travel to Tuvalu and Tonga.
Stepping on the deck of the research vessel last month, Erasito was affectionately nicknamed “Moana” by her crew mates – a title she accepts with a laugh.
“It was funny because, as a child, I actually had a **** pig and chicken,” Erasito says, referencing the popular animated Disney film. “Except I named them ‘Pig’ and ‘Chicken’. Zero creativity there.”
Erasito is studying for her PhD at the French national institute for ocean science and technology. The invitation to join the expedition came after her research on seamounts – underwater mountains that rise from the sea floor- and biodiversity in New Caledonia impressed the Pristine Seas team. In that project, she used remote-operated vehicles, imagery and acoustic data to explore deep-sea life.
She has family links to Rotuma and was “speechless” when asked to join the Fijian project.
“I was at work in France when the invitation came. It took me days to process and respond. It was surreal,” she says.
“I was thrilled to be going back to sea, but this expedition would be different. We would be exploring deep-sea ecosystems around my home island of Rotuma – something I never imagined I’d have the chance to do” she says.
Erasito says it “felt like a duty” to return to the Rotuma, where she remembers travelling as a child for her late father’s work. She had fond memories of swimming, fishing and the beach.
“I used to listen to stories of night fishing that my dad would share or different aspects of Rotuma … but mostly the significance of the ocean to Rotuma and her people.”
“Every person we met on the island felt like family – whether or not we were actually related. That’s the magic of home.”
The expedition has given Erasito experience with new technologies including types of underwater cameras and video tools.
“Seeing the deep-sea footage – the fish, the corals, and the life hidden beneath the surface – was incredible. And to know we’re exploring with minimal disruption to these fragile habitats was important to me.”
The deep-sea part of the Rotuma exploration has wrapped up, and the vessel is on its way to Tuvalu. So far, scientists have documented diverse and healthy ecosystems, and have begun sharing their knowledge with village chiefs. At the end of the journey, they will report the full findings to government and other partners.

Dr Keiron Fraser, expedition leader for Pristine Seas, said Fiji and Rotuma are home to “an awe-inspiring array of marine life”
“Guided by our local partners, this team will help unlock the mysteries of the ocean so we can learn how to best protect it,” he said.

The Pacific Ocean is home to many, but due to its sheer size, there are areas that are yet to be fully explored.
“For many of our islands, the ocean isn’t just our back yard. It’s our lifeline. Protecting it starts with knowledge – and that starts with expeditions like this,” Erasito says.
Fraser says Erasito’s involvement has been “inspiring for the young people in Rotuma”.
“We’ve been unbelievably lucky to have Charlene with us. The children loved her… a real example of what’s possible.”
Erasito hopes other young Pacific women will follow her path.
“The ocean is in our blood, our stories, and our responsibilities. You belong – in science, on ships, in submarines, and in rooms where ocean decisions are made. Follow your heart.”

Russian patriarch, criticised by Pope Francis, sends warm message to Leo
Russian patriarch, criticised by Pope Francis, sends warm message to Leo
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, sent a message of congratulations on Friday to Pope Leo, whose predecessor Pope Francis had criticised Kirill’s backing for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“You are beginning your ministry as the Primate of the Roman Catholic Church at a special historical moment, associated with a number of civilisational challenges as well as with certain signs of hope,” Kirill wrote to Leo, elected by a college of cardinals on Thursday to serve as the first pope from the United States.
“In this context, the relationship between the Christian East and West is of particular importance for the fate of the world.”
Kirill did not say what he meant by “signs of hope”, although he may have been referring to U.S.-led efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
The Russian Orthodox Church has been a powerful ally of President Vladimir Putin, giving its blessing to the war and supporting his campaign to uphold what he calls traditional values in Russian society, in contrast to perceived Western decadence.
In 2022, the Russian church scolded Pope Francis for using the wrong tone after he urged Patriarch Kirill not to become the Kremlin’s “altar boy”, saying such remarks would hurt dialogue between the two churches.
In his message to Leo, however, Kirill held open the possibility of building bridges.
“I sincerely hope that with your participation, the relations between our churches will progressively develop for a joint witness to Christ and the manifestation to humanity of the enduring beauty of life based on the commandments of God,” he said.

Channel 5 reports meteorologist Mark Johnson ‘no longer employed’ at the station
Longtime Cleveland meteorologist Mark Johnson is “no longer employed at WEWS,” Channel 5 reported the afternoon of May 9.
“News 5 wants to share with our viewers a change to our on-air staffing,” the station wrote in a news post on its website. “Meteorologist Mark Johnson is no longer employed at WEWS.”
Mark Johnson, Channel 5 meteorologist, is no longer employed by the station.
The brief news story did not include a reason for the separation or the nature of it, but included a statement from WEWS Vice President and General Manager Steve Weinstein:
“We want our audiences to know that News 5 and its parent company, Scripps, take protecting our audiences’ trust very seriously by requiring our employees to adhere to the highest ethical standards. We cannot provide further details, as this is a personnel matter.”
The story said the station’s “commitment to being the weather team Northeast Ohio turns to for safety and accuracy remains steadfast.”
The station will immediately conduct a search for Johnson’s replacement.
Johnson joined Channel 5 in November 1993, according to a page on the station’s website that has since been taken down.
“Mark is an award-winning meteorologist, having received coveted Emmy Awards for his weather forecasting,” the page read. “He was the first Cleveland forecaster with both the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association (NWA) Seals of Approval.”
Robin Swoboda and Mark Johnson from Channel 5 news in Cleveland in 1998.
Johnson has yet to speak out about the separation. His only social media post on May 9 was on Facebook, where he posted a picture of a lightning bolt behind a tree. Dozens of people commented on the post to wish him well.

Does intermittent fasting improve gut health? Why it’s hard to say
How does intermittent fasting change the gut microbiome?
Oliver Leedham/Alamy Stock Photo
There is evidence that intermittent fasting alters the gut microbiome, and while this is often believed to improve gut health, some studies are now raising doubts about whether that is always the case.
The idea behind intermittent fasting is relatively straightforward: instead of focusing on what you eat, you focus on when, cycling between periods of fasting and eating. The most popular approach limits all meals and snacks to the same 8-hour window each day.

Piringer on target as Roos easily tame Tigers in GFLW
Piringer on target as Roos easily tame Tigers in GFLW
Ever since the launch of the Goldfields Football League’s women’s competition four years ago, Wiebke Piringer has stamped herself as a reliable spearhead in Kalgoorlie’s forward line.
Those traits once again came to the ***** last Saturday when her five goals paved the way for Kalgoorlie’s first win of 2025 against Boulder by 72 points, 11.8 (74) to 0.2 (2).
Piringer, the Roos’ captain, was among five players to hit the scoreboard for the winners, with Jayde Merrylees and Tarmeka Smyth the main support, each with two goals.
It was also a big day for Kalgoorlie’s stingy defensive unit, who held the Tigers scoreless after quarter-time.
The margin was 30 points at the long break and the ******-and-whites pressed home the advantage with a six-goal second half.
Apart from the group’s win against Kambalda in round two when they kicked 10.15 (75), firepower has been an issue for Boulder, who were held to 1.4 in the season-opener against Mines Rovers, and they failed to score in a round-three loss against Railways.
For Piringer, however, it has generally been business as usual, with three games this season yielding eight goals.
After heading the GFLW goal kicking in 2023 with 24 majors, she backed it up last year with 31, and in 55 career games Piringer has booted 75 goals.
Kalgoorlie, under Shane Coysh, chase a second win this Saturday against Kambalda at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre.
Coysh guided Kalgoorlie into the GFLW grand final in each of the first three seasons, highlighted by back-to-back flags in 2022-23.
Also this Saturday, Mines Rovers host Railways in a showdown of unbeaten teams at Digger Daws Oval.
Ladder:
Railways 12 points; Mines Rovers 12 points; Kalgoorlie 4; Boulder 4; Kambalda 0.
Saturday’s GFLW draw:
At 9am: Mines Rovers v Railways at Digger Daws Oval.
At 1pm: Kalgoorlie v Kambalda at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre.

Bill Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson is still ‘welcome to the Carolina Football facilities’ after report she’d been banned
Bill Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson is still ‘welcome to the Carolina Football facilities’ after report she’d been banned
Is North Carolina moving to reduce Jordon Hudson’s presence around the football team?
UNC officials released a statement on Friday morning that she was still welcome at its football facilities, despite a report to the contrary.
“While Jordon Hudson is not an employee at the University or Carolina Athletics, she is welcome to the Carolina Football facilities. Jordon will continue to manage all activities related to Coach Belichick’s personal brand outside of his responsibilities for Carolina Football and the University.”
UNC coach Bill Belichick’s girlfriend has been a lightning rod around the program since her role in an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning.” Hudson, 24, has been influential in Belichick’s short time at North Carolina.

Hudson’s potentially reduced role at North Carolina first became public Friday morning on an episode of Pablo Torre’s “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast centered around Hudson and Belichick. Torre said 11 sources were spoken to for the podcast and revealed that two had told him that Hudson was told not to be at North Carolina’s facilities.
“Two sources at the University of North Carolina tell me that there’s been a decision, it was made last week, by the higher-ups inside the athletic department that had hired Bill Belichick to be the highest-paid public employee — not just coach — in the state of North Carolina at $10 million per year, and that decision was that Jordon Hudson is no longer allowed in the football building. She is not allowed on the football field.”
“Quote ‘Don’t think you’ll be hearing much from Jordon moving forward.’
Advertisement
Less than an hour after UNC’s statement came out, Torre said he stood by his reporting “which came from the highest levels” of the North Carolina football program.
The public fascination with the relationship between Belichick, 73, and Hudson grew after she curtly told CBS’ Tony Dokoupil that Belichick would not be answering a question about how the two met. Hudson accompanied Belichick to the interview to promote his new book, and that instance was reportedly not the only time she had chimed in during the CBS interview.
In a statement days after the interview aired, Belichick said that Hudson was “simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track” and that the two have a “personal and professional relationship.” The statement seemingly confirmed that Hudson is a de facto PR rep for Belichick, as the coach had previously asked for her to be copied on his North Carolina emails. In turn, she was even giving North Carolina advice on how to announce the hiring of Belichick’s son Steve as the team’s defensive coordinator.
Hudson has no official job at North Carolina, though her email signature said that she had a role at “Belichick Productions.” According to a report in the Athletic after the CBS interview, Hudson was a big reason why “Hard Knocks” and North Carolina never came to an agreement to document Belichick’s first season with the school. The NFL Films production had been in talks with North Carolina to follow a college program for the first time, but ultimately discussions fell apart.

Trump Has Total Meltdown After MSNBC Exposes Tariffs Disaster
Trump Has Total Meltdown After MSNBC Exposes Tariffs Disaster
A two-minute-long takedown of his trade policies on MSNBC sent the president into a rage on Friday.
“Donald Trump is backed into a corner,” said MSNBC business host Stephanie Ruhle. “His grand plans of ‘tariffs, tariffs, tariffs,’ aren’t working. You’re seeing day in and day out more business leaders—whether it’s Warren Buffett, or Jamie Dimon, or Ken Griffin—on big global stages saying, ‘This is going to crush us economically.’ And then you’ve got congressmen, senators from every state, saying to this White House, ‘Our small businesses are strangling, are dying here.’ I’m not saying Donald Trump has changed what he thinks in his heart, but he’s backed into a corner and he needs to get off this crazy tariff train, and he knows it.”
“So what did we see with England.… You’ve got a P.M. there who is a close ally of Donald Trump, and they’re saying, ‘Let’s put on a show, let’s create a theater, and let’s say we’ve got a deal.’ Yes, there aren’t any details to it, there is still a 10 percent tariff, which is why Jay Powell is not cutting rates, cuz 10 percent is more than triple what it was, so it’s still going to be painful, especially for small business,” Ruhle continued. “But what’s most important is the language around China. A week ago, China was like, ‘We’re not showing up unless you lower the tariffs,’ and [they] didn’t. Forty-eight hours ago Donald Trump said, ‘We’re not gonna lower the tariffs.’ Yesterday he said, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ And today things are softening even more.… Donald Trump is looking for some sort of exit here.”
“Look at the cargo ships coming into Seattle, the Port of Los Angeles; pick the port. We’re getting fewer and fewer ships with less and less cargo. And unless he turns this around, three weeks from now you walk into a store and we’re going to have a Covid-like supply chain crisis, and Trump is looking for an exit.”
Ruhle brilliantly exposed the president’s waffling on tariffs, introducing them with strongman language and massive guarantees while the reality is far more uncompelling. He introduced a trade deal with the U.K. on Thursday that wasn’t even finished. By Friday, he walked back his tariffs on China before even negotiating, announcing a steep 65 percent drop in tariffs is on the table (making it a still outrageous rate of 80 percent tariffs on the country).
Ruhle’s analysis clearly bothered the president, who took to Truth Social to express his disgust.
“I just watched an exhausted, highly neurotic Stephanie Ruhle spew LIES about Tariffs, as do many others, in order not to give me the Victory that they all see coming. Few people know Stephanie Ruhle, but I do, and she doesn’t have what it takes,” he wrote, personally attacking the MSNBC host. “Our Deal with the United Kingdom yesterday was AMAZING for both Countries and, in addition to everything else, British Airways just ordered $10 Billion Dollars worth of new Boeing planes. We’re going to make a fortune with Tariffs, only smart people understand that, and Stephanie was never known as a ‘High IQ’ person. MSDNC has become the Voice of the Democrat Party, and they should be treated as a Political Advocate with all of the Taxes and Penalties therefrom. Their Ratings are terrible, but Brian Roberts and his crew should be forced to TELL THE TRUTH. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump chooses not to engage with any of Ruhle’s arguments, instead choosing to focus on her demeanor and her workplace.

Activision is escalating its fight against cheaters in Call of Duty
Activision is escalating its fight against cheaters in Call of Duty
Activision is taking legal action against the creator of a well-known Call of Duty hack. The company says the GameHook and Lergware hacks are so toxic that some fans have quit playing the PC version of ****** Ops 6 altogether. Both programs allow users to kick other players from games and potentially ****** multiplayer servers, while GameHook also lets players use a cheat that ensures all of their shots hit an opponent.
Creating a cheat like this violates the terms of service, but typically would only result in a ban. However, Activision says the creators monetized the hack and have generated a significant amount of money by selling it to other players. “Activision is informed and believes, and on that basis alleges, that Defendants have received significant revenue from their activities, to the detriment of Activision and its player community,” according to suit (transcribed by IGN.)
Activision says Ryan Rothholz, who goes by the online tag Lerggy, originally created Lergware. The company issued a cease-and-desist letter in 2023, but Activision says the creator only changed his tag and gave the source code to other hackers. Activision also named two others, Collin Gyetvai and Jordan Newcombe Boothey, as working as resellers of the hack.
Activision
The game company is seeking both monetary compensation and punitive action against those named in the suit, a sum Activision claims could add up to millions of dollars.
Cheating in Call of Duty is nothing new. The community has long had a reputation for being toxic in numerous ways, and Activision has previously taken steps, albeit ineffectively, to combat this. Call of Duty: Warzone would shadowban players reported for cheating, and before that, Call of Duty: Vanguard made it so cheaters couldn’t see other players. The solutions have only served as a stop-gap, however, and the overall prevalence of cheating remains a problem for the online community.

John Elway’s Agent Jeff Sperbeck’s Cause of Death Revealed After Golf Cart Accident
Jeff Sperbeck, John Elway’s agent, died from blunt head trauma, the Riverside County Coroner Bureau confirmed to PEOPLE
Sperbeck fell from a golf cart on April 26 in La Quinta, Calif.
He died on April 30 from the injuries to his head
John Elway‘s longtime agent and friend Jeff Sperbeck died from accidental blunt head trauma, PEOPLE can confirm.
The Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau determined Sperbeck’s death was an accident, and that the injury occurred when the “passenger fell from” the golf cart, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office told PEOPLE on Friday, May 9.
The tragedy occurred when Sperbeck, 62, fell from a moving golf cart on Saturday, April 26 in La Quinta, Calif. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, per a Riverside County Sheriff news release, before dying on Wednesday, April 30 from head injuries sustained during the fall.
Jeff Sperbeck/Facebook
John Elway and Jeff Sperbeck
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told the Denver Post on Friday, May 2 that law enforcement had found “nothing” that suggests any criminal activity occurred during the incident. “This appears to be a horrific accident,” Bianco told the Post, noting that “a couple” of the people involved in the incident “happen to be very high-profile celebrities.”
“And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be,” Bianco said at the time, noting his department received a “massive media inquiry” after the news broke. “We’re doing everything we can to make sure that this is what it appears to be, and just an accident,” he added.
Equipment inspections were conducted on the golf cart, Bianco said on May 2, to rule out any possibility of a malfunction leading to Sperbeck’s fall. He also said that it is “common practice for medical personnel” to call the sheriff “because something doesn’t look right.” But in this incident, Bianco said, “This was not the case.”
TMZ was first to report Sperbeck’s cause of death.
