Family Wakes to Find Their Car Destroyed with a Live Bear Trapped Inside Family Wakes to Find Their Car Destroyed with a Live Bear Trapped Inside A bear broke into a family’s SUV on May, 1 in Butte County, Calif. The bear became trapped inside, destroying the car in an attempt to escape The family is now raising money to buy a new vehicle because “not having a car is going to hurt us” A family is in the market for a new car after their’s was destroyed… in a bear wreck. On the evening of Thursday, May 1, a Butte County, Calif. resident woke to the sound of a car *****. When they went to investigate, they found a bear rummaging inside their 2010 Subaru Forester. “I was pretty sure there’s a bear in my car right now,” Amanda Wells told her husband, Geno, according to Action News Now. Gofundme SUV damage from bear When Geno went outside to confirm that there was, in fact, a bear in their car, it was the safety of the animal, rather than the damage to their vehicle, that became their concern. Footage taken from inside the family’s home even shows the bear opening the car door with its paw in its search for snacks. “I wasn’t frightened because we were inside,” Amanda told the outlet. “I was more worried about the bear — he looked exhausted and overheated. We were afraid he might die in there.” After over an hour with no sign that the bear would be able to escape on its own, Geno got his pellet gun and fired at the SUV’s window. When the window broke, the bear crawled out safely and returned to the woods. Gofundme SUV damage from bear While the hungry creature managed to escape unharmed, the same couldn’t be said for the family’s Subaru. In addition to the windshield and windows being broken, the dashboard has been ripped out. “Funds had been pretty tight so we weren’t able to make our insurance payment and it got canceled so we unfortunately have no way to get reimbursement for the totaled car,” Amanda shared on the GoFundMe page she started to help raise money to purchase a new vehicle. Wells described the car as “my daily vehicle to get to work and transport our kids,” adding that “me not having a car is going to hurt us.” The fundraiser has raised $2,750 of the $3,000 goal so far. Keir Starmer to visit Ukraine to call for 30-day ceasefire in war Keir Starmer to visit Ukraine to call for 30-day ceasefire in war Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will travel to Ukraine on Saturday alongside fellow world leaders to put pressure on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire in the war. Sir Keir is being joined on the visit by President Emmanuel Macron of France, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Friedrich Merz, who is making his first trip to Ukraine since becoming Germany’s chancellor this week. It is Sir Keir’s second visit to Ukraine as prime minister. Sir Keir and the other leaders are using the visit to urge Russia to “agree a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire” – a proposal initially made by US President Donald Trump. The leaders’ decision to travel to Kyiv together is a deliberately symbolic response to the more than 20 leaders who joined President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for Russia’s Victory Day commemorations on Friday. The leaders also vowed to “ratchet up pressure on Russia’s war machine”. During the visit, the four leaders will join President Volodymyr Zelensky for a virtual meeting of the “coalition of the willing” – the group of around 30 mainly European nations seeking ways to entrench Ukraine’s security if a peace deal with Russia is agreed. They will also pay their respects to Ukrainian soldiers killed in action since Russia’s full-scale invasion more than three years ago. In a statement released before their arrival, the leaders said: “We, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom will stand in Kyiv in solidarity with Ukraine against Russia’s barbaric and ******** full-scale invasion. “We reiterate our backing for President Trump’s calls for a peace deal and call on Russia to stop obstructing efforts to secure an enduring peace. “Alongside the US, we call on Russia to agree a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to create the space for talks on a just and lasting peace. “We are ready to support peace talks as soon as possible, to discuss technical implementation of the ceasefire, and prepare for a full peace deal. “We are clear the bloodshed must end, Russia must stop its ******** invasion, and Ukraine must be able to prosper as a safe, secure and sovereign nation within its internationally recognised borders for generations to come. “We will continue to increase our support for Ukraine. Until Russia agrees to an enduring ceasefire, we will ratchet up pressure on Russia’s war machine.” Russia announced it would mark World War Two Victory Day with a unilateral, three-day ceasefire, which Ukraine rejected as a “theatrical show”. Kyiv has described the truce as a farce, accusing Russia of launching thousands of attacks since it came into force at midnight on Wednesday. Russia says it has observed the ceasefire and accuses Ukraine of hundreds of violations. ******* Chancellor Merz said he had high hopes that a full ceasefire could be agreed as soon as this weekend. Russia’s three-day truce is set to end on Saturday night, but Merz said it could be extended to 30 days and the “ball is now entirely in Moscow’s court”. Trump reiterated the call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire after a phone call with Zelensky. “If the ceasefire is not respected, the US and its partners will impose further sanctions,” Trump posted on Truth Social. $1 million lottery prize expiring soon, winning ticketholder has less than 2 weeks to claim $1 million lottery prize expiring soon, winning ticketholder has less than 2 weeks to claim Someone in Virginia may have a $1 million Mega Millions ticket in their possession, and they only have less than two weeks before their fortune disappears. According to lottery officials in Virginia, the individual has not come forward after winning $1 million in the Nov. 22, 2024, drawing. The ticket was bought at a 7-Eleven in Deltaville. By law, winning tickets in Virginia expire 180 days following the drawing, meaning the ticket will become “worthless” at 5 p.m. on May 21, lottery officials said. The winning numbers for the November drawing were 13-20-26-32-65, and the Mega Ball number was 2. The ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball number, which meant it missed out on a jackpot of more than $453 million. What will happen if the prize is unclaimed? By law, if the prize is unclaimed, the winnings will go to Virginia’s Literary Fund. The fund provides low-interest loans to localities for public school construction, renovations and technology upgrades, lottery officials said. Whoever the lucky winner is can contact the Virginia Lottery and redeem the ticket at one of its eight customer service centers across the state. “Mega Millions” lottery tickets are pictured on a counter at a ticket sales shop in Manhattan in New York City, U.S., January 10, 2023. Mega Millions raised ticket prices, odds of winning Mega Millions announced it would be more than doubling the cost of the game, going from $2 a ticket to $5 in early April. “Beyond big jackpots, players told us they want ******* non-jackpot prizes and that’s exactly what this new game delivers,” Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a news release. Although tickets have become pricier, the possible winnings have increased due to a new built-in multiplier, which increases non-jackpot prizes by two, three, four, five, or 10 times. According to lottery officials, the game’s odds have also increased, as there’s a 1 in 23 chance of winning, compared to the previous 1 in 24. Where can you buy lottery tickets? Tickets can be purchased in-person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets. You can also order tickets online through Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier of the USA TODAY Network, in these U.S. states and territories: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., and West Virginia. Elton John and Dua Lipa seek protection from AI Elton John and Dua Lipa seek protection from AI Dua Lipa, Sir Elton John, Sir Ian McKellen and Florence Welch are among a list of stars calling on the prime minister to update copyright laws in a way that protects them from artificial intelligence. A letter signed by more than 400 British musicians, writers and artists, addressed to Sir Keir Starmer, says failing to give that protection would mean them “giving away” their work to tech firms. Also at risk, they write, is “the ***’s position as a creative powerhouse”. They want the PM to back an amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill that would require developers to be transparent with copyright owners about using their material to train AI models. A government spokesperson said: “We want our creative industries and AI companies to flourish, which is why we’re consulting on a package of measures that we hope will work for both sectors. “We’re clear that no changes will be considered unless we are completely satisfied they work for creators,” they added. Other signatories include author Kazuo Ishiguro, playwright David Hare, singers Kate Bush and Robbie Williams, as well as Coldplay, Tom Stoppard and Richard Curtis. Sir Paul McCartney, who told the BBC in January he was concerned about AI ripping off artists, has also signed the letter. “We are wealth creators, we reflect and promote the national stories, we are the innovators of the future, and AI needs us as much as it needs energy and computer skills,” it states. They say their concerns can be met if the government backs an amendment proposed by Baroness Beeban Kidron ahead of a key vote in the House of Lords on Monday. Baroness Kidron’s amendment, it says, would “allow both AI developers and creators to develop licensing regimes that will allow for human-created content well into the future.” Not everyone agrees with the artists’ approach. Julia Willemyns, co-founder of the Centre for British Progress think tank, said such proposals could hamper the *** and its bid for growth. The measures would “do nothing to stop foreign firms from using content from the British creative industries,” she told the BBC. “A restrictive copyright regime would offshore AI development, chill domestic innovation, and directly harm the *** economy,” she said. However, the letter comes amid mounting concern from artists over the inclusion of their works, and material protected by copyright, in the data used to develop generative AI systems. These tools, which can produce new content in response to simple text prompts, have become increasingly popular and available to consumers. But their capabilities have been accompanied by concerns and criticism over their data use and energy demand. In February, artists including Annie Lennox and Damon Albarn released a silent album to protest about the government’s proposed changes to copyright law. The government carried out a consultation around its proposal to allow developers to be able to use creators’ content on the internet to help develop their models, unless the rights holders elect to “opt out”. According to The Guardian, ministers were reconsidering the proposal following creator backlash. Mr Ishiguro pointed the BBC to an earlier statement in which he wrote, “why is it just and fair – why is it sensible – to alter our time-honoured copyright laws to advantage mammoth corporations at the expense of individual writers, musicians, film-makers and artists?” The Nobel Prize-winning author added that since then the only limited advance was that it now appeared the government had accepted the opt-out proposals were not likely to be workable, He thought a new consultation to find a fairer scheme was possible, though it remained to be seen how meaningful any consultation would be. “It’s essential that they get this right,” he wrote. MPs recently rejected a separate amendment tabled by Baroness Kidron that aimed to make AI developers accountable to *** copyright law. Now, she says transparency obligations for tech firms under the new proposed amendment could support the development of licensing agreements between creators and companies. “The *** is in a unique position to take its place as a global player in the international AI supply chain, but to grasp that opportunity requires the transparency provided for in my amendments, which are essential to create a vibrant licencing market,” Baroness Kidron said. In their statement the government said: “It’s vital we take the time to work through the range of responses to our consultation, but equally important that we put in the groundwork now as we consider the next steps. “That is why we have committed to publishing a report and economic impact assessment – exploring the broad range of issues and options on all sides of the debate.” Source link #Elton #John #Dua #Lipa #seek #protection Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

China’s Nuclear Trade War Option–How Xi Could Destroy The US Housing Market In 1 Fell Swoop China’s Nuclear Trade War Option–How Xi Could Destroy The US Housing Market In 1 Fell Swoop Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. As the intensity of President Donald Trump’s trade war with China continues to ratchet up, analysts are beginning to fret about the possibility that China may exercise its version of a “nuclear option.” ******** President Xi Jinping has not indicated any willingness to back down, and that may be because he knows he has numerous cards left to play. According to CNBC, China holds over $1.2 trillion worth of America’s mortgage-backed securities. CNBC notes that loan servicer Ginnie Mae estimates that China’s MBS portfolio accounts for 15% of the outstanding mortgage balances in the U.S. The U.S. housing market would be utterly devastated if Xi decided to take the gloves off and flood the market with its MBS. It’s also worth mentioning that China holds a lot of US debt in treasury bonds. The combined weight of that economic power could devastate the American economy. Don’t Miss: Guy Cecala, executive chair of Inside Mortgage Finance, told CNBC, “If China wanted to hit us hard, they could unload Treasurys. Is that a threat? Sure, it is. They’re going to look at pushing levers and trying to put pressure. Targeting housing and mortgage rates is a powerful driver of something like that.” Mortgage rates have been rising rapidly because of the recent Treasury bond sell-off, and $1.2 trillion worth of mortgage-backed securities flooding the market would be a devastating one-two punch for several reasons. First, it would almost immediately result in higher interest rates at a time when most Americans are already struggling with housing costs. Second, China flooding the market with its MBSs could cause a chain reaction where other nations follow suit to avoid being stuck without a chair when the music stops. Canada and Japan also hold large mortgage-backed security portfolios. Under normal circumstances, it’s difficult to imagine either Japan or Canada taking such an extreme measure. Trending: Arrived Home’s Private Credit Fund’s has historically paid an annualized dividend yield of 8.1%*, which provides access to a pool of short-term loans backed by residential real estate with just a $100 minimum. Japan and Canada have been steadfast American allies on foreign and economic policy for decades, but Trump has targeted both nations with punishing tariffs. Even though the tariffs on Canada and Japan are not as extreme as the ones on China, it’s not hard to imagine either nation drifting further towards China’s orbit. In other words, the current circumstances are anything but normal. Story Continues The threat is keeping a lot of financial analysts up at night. Eric Hagen, a mortgage and specialty finance analyst at BTIG, told CNBC, “Most investors are concerned that mortgage spreads would widen in response to either China, Japan, or Canada coming in with a retaliatory objective. The concern, I think, is on folks’ radar screens, and being raised as a potential source of friction.” See Also: Donald Trump Just Announced a $500 Billion AI Infrastructure Deal — Here’s How You Can Invest in the Entertainment Market’s Next Big Disruptor for Just $998 CNBC also pointed out that the Federal Reserve, which bought up large tranches of mortgage-backed securities during the pandemic, has been quietly selling them to solidify its balance sheet. Hagen told CNBC, “That is a source of potential pressure on top of this whole conversation.” Although China has been slowly unloading its mortgage-backed security portfolio, there has so far been no indication it’s planning to flood the market with them. The effects of such a move would certainly hurt the ******** economy for several decades, but there is another dimension to this equation. China’s history dates back thousands of years, whereas the U.S. is not quite 250 years old. A multi-decade housing correction would be the equivalent of the blink of an eye in China’s history, but it would be nearly 10% of America’s. This is why everyone is hoping cooler heads will prevail. Trump easing China tariffs and Navy chief steps back Trump easing China tariffs and Navy chief steps back The Financial Times weekend edition says US President Donald Trump has signalled “openness to cutting tariffs on China”, ahead of upcoming talks. In a Truth Social post, Trump suggests that the US could almost halve the tariffs on ******** goods, which currently stands at 145%. The head of public policy for investment management firm Pimco warns that while it is likely there will be some softening of tariffs, the chances of a “durable substantive deal” from the talks is “very low”. “Net fall in migration set to stall”, headlines the Times on what it calls the Home Office’s “fears” that it will be above expected unless “radical policies are introduced”. It says officials believe net migration from 2028 will be close to Office for National Statistics high-end projections of 525,000, and that government forecasts have been “overstating” migration’s economic benefits. The Daily Express claims “obesity dugs can give £4.5bn back to work boost”, with experts estimating “benefits beyond immediate health improvements”. It adds that political parties have been urged “to work together”, as experts allege that the medication could raise production value by an average of £1,127 per person per year. Many of Saturday’s papers report on Admiral Sir Ben Key, who according to the Daily Mail’s lead story is the first Navy chief to face a “misconduct probe in 500 years” over a reported affair. The paper says the 59-year-old stepped back for “private reasons”, according to the Navy, amid the investigation into his alleged relationship with a “younger woman” said to be a senior officer. The Daily Telegraph reports on the same story, quoting a Royal Navy source that while the affair was “consensual”, it is seen as “disappointing” because Sir Ben is held with high regard in the Navy. The paper adds that the detail that he had previously announced his intention to retire as First Sea Lord this summer. The Daily Mirror runs with an exclusive on the alleged row between David and Victoria Beckham and their son Brooklyn and his wife, Nicola Peltz. The paper says it spoke to Peltz’s friends, who launched what a source close to the former footballer and Spice Girl, called a “deeply unpleasant attack” on them. “Reform *** surges to 10-point poll lead over Labour”, leads the i Paper’s weekend edition. It says Nigel Farage’s party has gone up by nine points in a month to 32%, ahead of Labour, which is says is down four points on 22%, according to a BMG Research poll for the paper. The paper adds that if this is repeated at a general election, “Reform would win a majority”. “It’s sooooooo unfair”, reads the Daily Star, on a survey that alleges that people called Kevin get fewer online dates than other people. The neews is illustrated by a picture of Harry Enfield’s Kevin the Teenager character who often used the catchphrase repeated in the Star’s headline. The 1% Goes On A Global Luxury Real Estate Spree–Sales Of Properties Over $10 Million In World’s Most Glamorous Cities Surges By 30% The 1% Goes On A Global Luxury Real Estate Spree–Sales Of Properties Over $10 Million In World’s Most Glamorous Cities Surges By 30% Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. The super-rich ended 2024 on a luxury real estate binge that caused a dramatic spike in sales of properties over $10 million in glamorous cities around the globe. Realtor.com reported the trend, citing data by global real estate firm Knight Frank. The report indicated a 30% increase in sales activity over the previous year in this high-flying sector. Overall, there were 558 of these mega-transactions. Dubai was the most popular destination in 2024, where Knight Frank noted that Q4 2024 sales were double the 2023 total. A sizable portion of that activity may be attributable to the United Arab Emirates’ golden visa program. This program offers a long-term residency between five and 10 years to anyone who makes a real estate investment over $550,000 inside the emirate. Don’t Miss: New York City remains very popular with the jet-set crowd and checked in with 87 deals over $10 million. That was enough to nearly double the Big Apple’s total from the end of 2023. Florida was another popular US destination, and vacant lots were fetching eight-figure prices in Palm Beach, which is home to President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago compound. The opportunity to rub shoulders with Trump appears to be a strong draw. Hong Kong also mounted a strong comeback from the damage that COVID-19 did to its real estate market. The report noted a 380% increase in luxury property sales compared to the post-COVID years. However, the opposite was true in Singapore, where a 60% tax on luxury real estate purchases by foreign buyers took effect in 2024. Trending: Arrived Home’s Private Credit Fund’s has historically paid an annualized dividend yield of 8.1%*, which provides access to a pool of short-term loans backed by residential real estate with just a $100 minimum. London was another market that experienced a drop-off in luxury buying activity, a trend that Knight-Frank’s report attributed to fears over possible regulatory changes that target foreign buyers. “The total for London in 2024 was impacted by speculation over new regulations for wealthy non-domiciled residents,” the report says. London is struggling with housing affordability, and the city has responded by proposing crackdowns on foreign property ownership. Story Continues Liam Bailey, who heads global research for Knight Frank, wrote, “Dubai still dominates in terms of sales volumes, but New York, Hong Kong and Palm Beach are back, confirming that super prime demand remains global. A positive wealth creation backstory points to continued healthy deal flow in 2025.” However, it’s worth noting that the report and the supporting data were compiled before Trump announced his sweeping tariffs in early April. The world’s economic picture has changed rapidly in the last several weeks. It’s not hard to imagine that the confidence buyers felt in late 2024 waning in the months to come. The fallout from the tariffs unsettled the bond markets and caused the dollar to slump to a three-year low. The effect of these trends on how and where the 1% buys their luxury real estate remains to be seen. Trump calls emptying U.S. ports a ‘good thing’ despite supply-chain panic because ‘that means we lose less money’ Trump calls emptying U.S. ports a ‘good thing’ despite supply-chain panic because ‘that means we lose less money’ Shipping volumes at U.S. ports have decreased drastically as a result of sweeping tariffs. Despite supply-chain professionals warning the port traffic slowdown could lead to goods shortages and increased consumer prices, President Donald Trump said emptying ports was a “good thing” because it means less trade with China. As logistics professionals sound the alarms on emptying U.S. ports as a result of steep tariffs, President Donald Trump said those major import slowdowns are actually a boon. Following Trump’s introduction of sweeping tariffs, shipping volumes have fallen considerably, according to data from container-tracking software company Vizion. In the ******* between the five weeks before and five weeks after Trump introduced and implemented his tariff plan, virtually all major U.S. ports saw a decline in the number of container books. The Port of Portland in Oregon saw a 50% drop in exports, and the Port of Los Angeles, the U.S.’s largest outpost, had 17% lower exports. From the week ending April 28, Vizion reported a 43% week-over-week decrease in containers. Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka warned last month of a “precipitous drop” in shipping volumes, saying American retailers will have fully stocked shelves for only about another six weeks. Trump not only acknowledged the shipping slowdown in a Thursday press briefing announcing a trade deal with the ***; he seemed heartened by it. “We’re seeing as a result that ports here in the U.S., the traffic has really slowed and now thousands of dockworkers and truck drivers are worried about their jobs,” a reporter said in the press briefing. “That means we lose less money,” Trump said. “When you say it slowed down, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing.” Trump has doubled down on the need for tariffs to help reverse a trade deficit to China, which he says is $1 trillion. “From 500 billion to 1.1 trillion…frankly if we didn’t do business we would’ve been better off,” he said on Thursday. China exported goods worth about $525 billion to the U.S. last year, which accounts for about 15% of its exports, according to data from China’s General Administration of Customs. The U.S. estimates it received about $439 billion in ******** exports in 2024, with $143.5 billion of U.S. goods exported to China. The goods-trade deficit was about $295 billion in 2024. Trump has seemed to waver on the severity with which to tax China. As of Friday, he’s floating an 80% levy on ******** goods, a substantial cut from the 145% tariff already in place, though some investors warn the steep tax would still be prohibitive to trade. “The Trump administration is delivering relief to the American people from the disaster of Bidenomics while laying the groundwork for a long-term restoration of American Greatness,” White House deputy press secretary Kush Desai told Fortune in a statement, citing data from the White House reporting a 22% increase in gross domestic investment in March, as well as cooling inflation, albeit before much of the tariffs’ implementation. Desai told Fortune the U.S. can’t rely on foreign imports because of the Covid-era pharmaceuticals and computer-chip shortages. Logistics and trade concerns While Trump claims plummeting U.S. port traffic will help save money, supply-chain professionals have sounded the alarm on the ramifications of these shipping disruptions to the logistics industry and consumers alike. The threat of tariffs caused companies to pull forward shipments to avoid the taxes, but the influx of goods now may mean either excess inventory or shortages down the line, Peter Sand, chief analyst of freight analytics platform Xeneta, previously told Fortune. Shortages may mean higher prices for companies, which are likely to get passed down to consumers. To manage excess inventory, companies may have to invest more heavily in storage warehouses or ground freight for deliveries. “Global supply chains work really well when they can go steady, so when you have stop-and-go, or when you have all of a sudden a rush of cargo like you see right now, that’s really putting a strain on global supply chains, maritime supply chains,” Sand said. A decline in port activity could have adverse effects on labor as well. Port of LA executive director Seroka told CNN that shipment slowdowns could mean less reliable work schedules for dock workers and truckers. Beyond supply-chain woes, some economists take issue with the foundation of Trump’s arguments for tariffs, saying that a trade deficit with China isn’t entirely a bad thing. “We get incredibly valuable things from China,” Jason Furman, Harvard University professor of economic policy, told Fortune. “If we want to diversify that, it’s something we should do over time, not by just halting all the ships coming in today.” While trade deficits can exacerbate a dependency on another country and create some economic vulnerabilities, Furman said, they also provide desirable products to the U.S. Other economists argue tariffs would effectively sever trade with China, ending a ******* of expanding globalization. According to Furman, the U.S. should stop focusing on steep taxes to sectors like consumer goods, such as produce, clothing and toys. Trump, seeming to admit tariffs could create some shortages for consumers, said last week that little girls can make do with two dolls, instead of 30. “Tariffs on targeted sectors that are important for national security could play a role,” Furman said. “But discouraging American children from buying dolls is not a way to make America great again.” This story was originally featured on Fortune.com Source link #Trump #calls #emptying #U.S #ports #good #supplychain #panic #means #lose #money Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
