Perth weather: Sunny May days spell trouble for city rainfall as winter approaches
Perth is set for another exceedingly dry May, with the city this week recording its second hottest day for the month on record.
The temperature reached a maximum of 33.8C on Friday, just 0.5C shy of the hottest day in May on record for the Perth metro area, set on May 1, 2002, when the temperature reached 34.3C.
It’s more than 10C above the average maximum temperature for the Perth metro area in May, which currently sits at 22.4C.
Although it didn’t quite pip the record, Friday was the hottest May day in seven years after a 32.7C maximum on May 12, 2018.
It was also the third day this month the temperature has exceeded 30C, equalling the prevailing record of three days set in 1907.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Catherine Schelfhout said the warmer conditions do not bode well for rainfall this month.
Perth has recorded just 7.8mm of rain this month, less than 10 per cent of the monthly average for May of 86.2mm.
With no rain forecast for the next seven days, Perth is on track for one of its driest-ever Mays.
May 1964 was the lowest May rainfall on record, with just 14.1mm. More recently, a meagre 17.8mm of rain was logged for May in 2019.
“We have a very minor cold front crossing the South West corner on Monday night, but it’s unlikely to bring any rainfall to Perth,” Ms Schelfhout said.
“The next seven days we’re under the influence of a ridge, so dry and warm conditions are continuing.”
And while West Aussies might be glad about the prolonged sunshine, it’s a worrying sign for overall climate change trends.
“It’s looking pretty dry. There are no indicators of anything (for rain) this month apart from that cold front (on Monday night),” she said.
Ms Schelfhout said the metro area was currently experiencing a “blocking high”, which happens when high-pressure systems stick around too long and block cold fronts from coming through, bringing the rain with them.
“We’re seeing a drying trend across south west WA, a strong climate change signal,” she said.
“But climate outlooks are suggesting a return to more average conditions for June.”
Average June rainfall is 127.1mm, and the bureau expects a return to regular season programming as the winter months settle in.

Shingles vaccine has unexpected effect on heart health
Shingles vaccine has unexpected effect on heart health
The list of potential benefits of the shingles vaccine continues to grow.
Beyond protecting against the viral infection and resulting painful rash, the shot has also been linked to a reduced risk of dementia, as Fox News Digital previously reported.
And now, a new study has found that the vaccine could lower the risk of heart disease for up to eight years.
Dementia Risk Could Dip With Common Vaccine, Study Suggests
In the long-running study, researchers analyzed up to 12 years of data for more than 1.2 million people aged 50 or older in South Korea, focusing on shingles vaccination rates and 18 different types of cardiovascular disease.
A new study has found that the shingles vaccine could lower the risk of heart disease for up to eight years.
They found that those who received the shingles vaccine had a 23% lower risk of heart issues, including stroke, heart failure and coronary artery disease.
Read On The Fox News App
The benefits were greater for people under 60 years old, likely because they have a better immune response, according to the researchers.
Blood Pressure And Dementia Risk Share Surprising Link, Study Suggests
The vaccine’s heart health benefits were also more prominent among men and those who have unhealthy behaviors, such as being sedentary, drinking alcohol and smoking.
The findings were published in the European Heart Journal on Tuesday.
The shingles vaccine has also been linked to a reduced risk of dementia, as Fox News Digital previously reported.
The primary symptom of shingles is a painful rash that can lead to serious complications, particularly for older adults and those with weak immune systems, according to lead author Professor ***** Keon Yon from the Kyung Hee University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea.
Without vaccination, about 30% of people may develop shingles in their lifetime, Yon noted.
“In addition to the rash, shingles has been linked to a higher risk of heart problems, so we wanted to find out if getting vaccinated could lower this risk,” he said in a press release.
“Our study suggests that the shingles vaccine may help lower the risk of heart disease, even in people without known risk factors. This means that vaccination could offer health benefits beyond preventing shingles.”
Those who received the shingles vaccine had a 23% lower risk of heart issues, including stroke, heart failure and coronary artery disease.
The researchers shared several possible reasons for the vaccine’s protective effect on heart health.
“A shingles infection can cause blood vessel damage, inflammation and clot formation that can lead to heart disease,” Yon said. “By preventing shingles, vaccination may lower these risks.”
Dr. Jasdeep Dalawari, a Virginia-based interventional cardiologist and regional chief medical officer at VitalSolution, an Ingenovis Health company, was not involved in the study but offered his comments on the findings.
“This result is notable but requires careful interpretation, especially for the U.S. population,” he told Fox News Digital.
Without vaccination, about 30% of people may develop shingles in their lifetime.
“The study used a live vaccine, whereas the U.S. uses Shingrix, a recombinant (non-live) vaccine,” Dalawari noted. “It’s important to note that Shingrix is over 90% effective against shingles, compared to the live vaccine’s 51%.”
The live zoster vaccine contains a weakened form of the varicella zoster virus that causes shingles.

The cardiologist also pointed out that the observational study shows correlation, not causation, and that further research is needed.
“The study included 1.2 million individuals aged 50+, all from one ethnicity,” he said. “Expanding the participant pool to include diverse ethnicities would be beneficial in our multi-ethnic society.”
“A shingles infection can cause blood vessel damage, inflammation and clot formation that can lead to heart disease,” the researcher said.
Although the study did consider other health conditions, lifestyle factors and socioeconomic status, the researchers agreed that it had some limitations.
“As this study is based on an Asian cohort, the results may not apply to all populations,” Yon noted. “While we conducted rigorous analysis, this study does not establish a direct causal relationship, so potential bias from other underlying factors should be considered.”

The team plans to conduct further research into the heart health benefits of the non-live, recombinant vaccine, which contains a protein from the virus.

What’s likely to be in Labour’s immigration crackdown?
What’s likely to be in Labour’s immigration crackdown?
Brian Wheeler
Political reporter

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is preparing to unveil fresh plans to reduce *** net migration, which last year stood at 728,000.
Successive governments have battled largely in vain to reduce net migration, which is the number of people coming to the *** minus the number leaving.
In June 2023, the figures hit a record 906,000.
The Home Office will not officially confirm the planned new laws in its immigration white paper, due early next week.
But here is what we think it might include.
Skills investment
Employers will have to show they are investing in *** skills before they will be allowed to bring in workers from overseas, the white paper is expected to say.
This has long been promised by Labour, with the IT and telecommunications sectors likely to be targeted.
Yvette Cooper last year promised to strengthen the Migration Advisory Committee so it can “highlight key sectors where labour market failures mean there is over-reliance on international recruitment”.
Visa restrictions
Visa applications from nationalities judged most likely to overstay and claim asylum in the *** are likely to be restricted under the plans.
In practice, this will mean tougher screening and more probing from officials for people from countries such as Pakistan, Nigeria and Sri Lanka who want to come to the *** to study or work.
These three countries were named by the Home Office in March as the biggest source of asylum seekers who had originally entered the *** on a visa.
Permanent residence
Migrants already living in the *** are expected to have to wait longer before they can apply for permanent residency, under the proposals.
At the moment, most people can apply for indefinite leave to remain if they have lived and worked in the *** for five years.
This ******* could be extended to as long as 10 years for some migrants, according to reports.
English language tests
The white paper is thought likely to include tougher English language requirements for immigrants.
But the Home Office has denied reports that the test for work visa applicants will be raised to the equivalent of English as a foreign language A-Level.
At the moment, new arrivals are required to demonstrate a basic understanding of English, equivalent to GCSE level, to be eligible for certain work visas.
International care workers
The immigration white paper is also expected to highlight new rules which came into force last month on the recruitment of international care workers.
Since 9 April, care providers who want to recruit a new worker from overseas have had to first prove that they have attempted to recruit a worker from within England.
‘Right to family life’
The government is currently reviewing how the “right to a family life” contained in Article 8 in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is applied in immigration cases – and changes could be included in the white paper.
Last month, Yvette Cooper told the BBC “ad hoc” decisions by the courts have for too long been driving the way in which the law is interpreted “rather than having a clear framework set out by government”.
“So we do think it is possible to have a stronger framework that is set out around the way in which international law should be interpreted,” she told the Today programme.
“We obviously continue to comply with international law, but it’s about how it is interpreted. We’re reviewing that at the moment.”
Last year, Cooper successfully appealed against an immigration tribunal’s decision to halt the deportation of an Albanian criminal partly on the grounds that it would be “unduly harsh” on his 10-year-old son, who had emotional and sensory difficulties and “will not eat the type of chicken nuggets that are available abroad”.

The failed Soviet spacecraft Kosmos 482 will conclude its roughly 50-year jaunt through Earth’s orbit this weekend, with experts predicting it could ****** back to our planet as soon as tonight (May 9).
The latest predictions from the European Space Agency (ESA) reveal that the Kosmos 482 Descent Craft is poised to reenter Earth’s atmosphere at approximately 2:26 a.m. EDT (06:26 GMT) on Saturday, May 10. The uncertainty for the prediction is plus or minus 4.35 hours, giving us an estimated reentry window of roughly 10 p.m. EDT Friday (May 9) to 7 a.m EDT Saturday, according to ESA.
Kayhan Space, a Colorado-based space technology company that’s also been tracking the craft, predicts an even narrower reentry window. At press time, the company’s latest estimate predicts a reentry time of 2:28 a.m. ET (6:28 GMT) on May 10, plus or minus 2.4 hours.
“The atmospheric density in the lower altitudes (50 to 300 km) [30 to 185 miles] is very uncertain, which can result in large prediction uncertainties,” Derek Woods, senior astrodynamics engineer at Kayhan Space, told Live Science in an email.
Where will Kosmos 482 land?

Falling like a meteor through the atmosphere, the roughly 3-foot-wide (1 meter), 1,091 pound (495 kilograms) craft could hit virtually anywhere on the planet. It could land at any point between 52 degrees north and 52 degrees south — an enormous swath of the planet that includes almost every major populated area — according to ESA.
Related: Doomed Soviet spacecraft tumbling toward Earth may already have its parachute out, new images hint
Luckily, the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of the spacecraft landing in the ocean, as most uncontrolled space junk reentries do. Experts won’t be able to narrow down the landing zone until hours before the reentry happens, due to the somewhat unpredictable effects of atmospheric drag.
The likelihood of the out-of-control spacecraft hitting a person is “the usual one-in-several-thousand chance” associated with falling space debris, Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, wrote in a blog post.
What is Kosmos 482?
The Kosmos 482 probe was built and launched in 1972 as part of the Soviet Union’s Venera mission to explore Venus. The Soviets successfully launched the Venera 7 and 8 probes, which were the first two spacecraft to successfully land on Venus in 1970 and 1972, respectively.
Recent satellite images of Kosmos 482 suggest it may have already deployed its parachute in space several years ago. However, this can’t be proven until reentry begins. | Credit: Ralf Vandebergh
Kosmos 482 was built as a sister probe to Venera 8. However, due to a malfunction with the Soyuz rocket that launched it into space, the probe failed to achieve enough velocity to reach Venus, instead getting stuck in an elliptical, or oval-shaped, orbit around Earth for more than 50 years — until now.
Designed to survive a fiery fall through Venus’ atmosphere, the Kosmos 482 Descent Craft is likely to stay in one piece as it crashes to Earth this weekend, Marco Langbroek, a lecturer in space situational awareness at Delft Technical University in the Netherlands who first discovered the lander’s imminent return, wrote in a blog post. It will be traveling at approximately 150 mph (242 km/h).
Part of a larger problem
While its intriguing history has earned the lander media attention, Kosmos 482 is just one of more than 1.2 million pieces of space junk in Earth’s orbit larger than 0.4 inches (1 centimeter), according to an ESA report published in April.

—How do tiny pieces of space junk cause incredible damage?
Orbital collisions and uncontrolled reentries are becoming increasingly common, with “intact satellites or rocket bodies … now re-entering the Earth atmosphere on average more than three times a day,” according to the ESA report.
The larger pieces of space junk come from a range of spacecraft, rockets and boosters that are big enough to survive reentry and reach the ground.
“We’re seeing a rise in reentries involving larger objects that can partially survive and reach the surface,” Woods said. “Some of these larger objects are defunct space race-era objects like KOSMOS 428 DESCENT CRAFT. These objects were in highly eccentric orbits and are now naturally decaying after decades in space.”
As the number of new satellites in Earth’s orbit increases every year, it will become more important than ever for missions to have “controlled end-of-life plans for large objects” and for space agencies to invest in debris removal technology, Woods added.

***-US trade deal ‘platform for going further’, Mandelson says
***-US trade deal ‘platform for going further’, Mandelson says
Lord Mandelson has hailed this week’s ***-US trade deal a “platform for going further and opening up more trade opportunities”, in his first interview taking up his role as the ***’s ambassador to the US.
The deal has reduced or removed tariffs that were recently impposed by US President Donald Trump on some of his nation’s imports from the ***, including cars, steel and aluminium.
Former New Labour cabinet member Lord Mandelson has played a crucial role in negotiations between the two nations since he started his job in February.
Speaking to BBC Two’s Newsnight he said he was “looking forward” to further agreements to bring “down further tariffs”.
On Donald Trump’s self-declared Liberation Day in early April he announced that the *** would be subject to 10% tariffs on the all the goods it exports to the US. More stringent measures were later applied to cars, steel and aluminium.
But on Thursday, the US agreed to allow some steel and aluminium into the country tariff-free, and reduced the levies on a set number of British cars.
Since then, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmerhas said there are “ongoing discussions” with the US over the ***’s own Digital Services Tax (DST) – a 2% levy that raises about £800m a year mainly from US tech companies.
Lord Mandelson said it was discussed during the latest round of negotiations between the two nations but he said “abolishing” the DST had not been part of the trade deal.
“If the Americans want to come back and discuss the digital services tax, it’s up to them,” he said.
“What they suggested wasn’t acceptable to us, so it’s not in the deal,” he explained.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Thursday that President Trump’s administration was still pressing the *** to lift the tax, referring to it as a “bad virus”.
He told reporters at the White House: “We’re still in negotiations…that’s a very big deal to President Trump.”
When asked by Newsnight’s Matt Chorley about his observations on the relationship between Starmer and Trump, the ambassador said that while they were “not cut from the same cloth… they do both stand up for and defend their national interests”.
He continued: “And where they see those interests converging or whether they’ve got to be made to work well, they set their minds to achieving that, and they do it very well.
“They do it by talking well to each other, very straightforwardly. They have trust in one another.”
Lod Mandelson explained that this makes Starmer the a prime minister “who’s going to stand up for Britain internationally, who’s going properly to explain and defend our national interest… [and] maintain good relationships” with close allies.
He said that following the ***-US deal, he had received “a lot of messages from fellow ambassadors here in Washington saying, ‘congratulations, wish we were in the same position, how did you do it?'”
He added: “So that’s something, that’s a feather in our caps and something you and others, if I might suggest, should celebrate.”
On his own relationship with the US president, Lord Mandelson said when he first walked into the Oval Office, Trump said “God, you’re a good looking fellow, aren’t you?”.
The ambassador described Trump as a “people person” who takes people at “face value”, explaining that the president judged him on his merits.

Families of ******-held hostages share concerns
Families of ******-held hostages share concerns

Twin brothers Gali and Ziv Berman are still being held in Gaza
Families of Israeli hostages taken to Gaza in the 7 October attacks have expressed their increasing concern about the fates of loved ones, as doubts grow about how many are still alive.
One family said the hostages were at risk “every day” they continued to be held captive by ******.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this week there was “uncertainty” over the condition of three of the 24 hostages previously believed to be alive.
He was reacting to US President Donald Trump’s statement on Tuesday that only 21 of those taken in the ******-led attacks were still alive.
The BBC spoke to two families – including the brother of a hostage released by ****** this year – after Israel’s security cabinet approved an expanded offensive in Gaza.
Netanyahu said ministers had decided on a “forceful operation” to destroy ****** and rescue the hostages, and that Gaza’s 2.1 million population “will be moved, to protect it”.
One family told the BBC they hoped the troops would only be used to help with the aim of freeing the hostages, not for any other reasons.
Liran Berman’s twin brothers Gali and Ziv have been held by ****** for 19 months after they were kidnapped from their home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza on 7 October 2023.
About 1,200 people were killed by ******-led gunmen that day, while Gali and Ziv were among 251 others who were taken hostage.
More than 52,780 people have been killed in Gaza during the ensuing war, according to the territory’s ******-run health ministry.
Israel cut off all deliveries of aid and other supplies on 2 March and resumed its offensive two weeks later after it broke a two-month ceasefire that saw 33 Israeli and five Thai hostages released in exchange for about 1,900 ************ prisoners in Israeli jails.
Following news of Israel’s plan to expand its military operation in Gaza using thousands more troops unless ****** agreed a new ceasefire and released the remaining hostages, Liran Berman told BBC News: “I hope that Israel is sending the forces to put pressure on ****** to sit down.
“When ****** was feeling threatened, they did the deals. I hope they are not sending the troops to conquer or for revenge.”
Reuters
Liran Berman says he worries about his two brothers’ mental condition
Mr Berman said his 27-year-old brothers were “at risk every single day”.
“We know they are alive. The released hostages saw them.”
He said he believed Gali and Ziv had been injured when they were seized but that he worried their mental condition was “not good” after so long in captivity.
With the release of emaciated and frail hostages in February, Mr Berman said he was worried about his brothers’ conditions.
“We need to pressure ****** and its enablers.”
Reuters
Or Levy was painfully thin when he was released
For 491 days, Or Levy was held by ****** not knowing whether his wife Einav had survived the 7 October attack on the Nova music festival where he was taken.
She didn’t and for more than a year his three-year-old son Almog was without both his parents. In February, Or, weak and painfully thin, was released by ******.
His brother, Michael Levy, told BBC News he was worried about the impact on the hostages if Israel sent more troops into Gaza.
“I’m concerned it will affect the hostages, that the terrorists can decide to do something to them,” he said. “I do believe the army knows what it’s doing and they will make sure the hostages aren’t affected, but it’s always a concern.”
But he said he wanted more pressure applied to get them released.
“There is a crime against humanity and everyone including President Trump needs to do more in order to bring them back.”
He said his brother did not receive enough food while he was held hostage in ******’s underground tunnels in Gaza and “didn’t see sunlight”. He said he showered “every two months or so”.
“My brother worries about the fact the rest of the hostages will end up dying in captivity because that was his worst fear about himself and it’s now his worst fear about those he left behind.”
Of the 251 people taken hostage on 7 October – and the four other captives held by ****** for around a decade before the attacks – 59 now remain in Gaza.
The Israeli government has publicly confirmed the deaths of 35, leaving 24 hostages. There is now uncertainty about the fate of three of them.
All 59 were kidnapped in the 7 October attack apart from one – the soldier Hadar Goldin who was killed in combat in Gaza during a previous war in 2014.
The living hostages are men in their 20s or 30s, apart from Omri Miran who turned 48 in April.
Of the 35 whose bodies Israel has confirmed are being held in Gaza, nearly all are men who were between 19 and 86 years old when they died. Three are women.

Gunmen handed Tal Shoham to the Red Cross in February
Since the spate of releases earlier this year, former hostages have been speaking to the media and others about their time in captivity.
Tal Shoham, 49, released in February after 505 days, told a UN event last month: “There were many times that we received just one pita bread for an entire day… Traumatised by hunger, we collected crumb after crumb.”
Reuters
Eliya Cohen was released in February after 505 days
Eliya Cohen, 28, who was also held for 505 days, told Israel’s Channel 12 that once a week ****** gunmen would make him and other hostages take off all their clothes and would tell them: “You you’re not quite there, you’re not thin enough… I’m thinking about cutting the food even more.”
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum
Ilana Gritzewsky’s partner Matan remains a hostage
Ilana Gritzewsky was released during another ceasefire in November 2023. Her partner Matan Zangauker is still a hostage.
The 31-year-old told the New York Times in March that as she was kidnapped from her home she was molested by one of the kidnappers.
The article says she believes she was also ********* assaulted in Gaza. “When she came to, she said, she found herself on the floor in a dilapidated building, clearly in Gaza, her shirt up baring her breasts and pants pulled down, with seven gunmen standing over her.”
Ron Krivoi, a sound engineer, was kidnapped from the Nova music festival.
Last month, The Times of Israel quoted a Channel 12 interview in which he described the tunnels.
“We were inside a very, very small cage… and we had to lie down and rest in it – you couldn’t stand. No height, no toilets, no food. We were five people.”

Taylor Swift subpoenaed to appear as witness in Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni legal stoush
Taylor Swift subpoenaed to appear as witness in Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni legal stoush
The world’s biggest music superstar, Taylor Swift, has been dragged into the middle of an ugly legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, after the diva was reportedly subpoenaed to appear as a witness.
Baldoni and Lively have been engaged in a spiteful legal battle around allegations of misconduct during production of the hit movie It Ends With Us.
Lively began legal proceedings against her director-costar last December, accusing him of ******* harassment, “disturbing” and “unprofessional” behaviour on the film set and a subsequent retaliatory smear campaign.
Baldoni has denied the allegations and, in January, filed a countersuit alleging defamation and extortion against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds and their publicity team.
PEOPLE is reporting that a spokesperson for Taylor Swift, 35, said the singer has had no close connection to the film other than her song “My Tears Ricochet” being used, and that the subpoena is to create “tabloid clickbait.”
“Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions, she did not score the film, she never saw an edit or made any notes on the film.”
Camera IconHugh Jackman, left, Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively in It Ends With Us, centre and Taylor Swift. Credit: Supplied
She did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release, and was travelling around the globe during 2023 and 2024 headlining the biggest tour in history.
“The connection Taylor had to this film was permitting the use of one song, ‘My Tears Ricochet.’ Given that her involvement was licensing a song for the film, which 19 other artists also did, this document subpoena is designed to use Taylor Swift’s name to draw public interest by creating tabloid clickbait instead of focusing on the facts of the case,” the spokesperson continued.
Rumours surfacing after Ms Swifts mention in the legal case have also suggested *********** star Hugh Jackman may also be called to give evidence due to his close relationship with Ms Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds and Swift.
“Anyone that had any knowledge of this situation will be subpoenaed, no matter of their celebrity status,” a source told PEOPLE.
Among Baldoni’s claims and reason for the potential subpoena’s is that Swift and Reynolds, 48, pressured him into accepting one of Lively’s rewrites for screenwriter Christy Hall’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’****** novel.
In the complaint, Baldoni described an alleged meeting at Lively and Reynolds’ ********** where Swift “began praising Lively’s script”. Baldoni says he understood the subtext and felt he needed to comply with Lively’s direction.
In an alleged text exchange following that interaction, Baldoni told Lively that her script changes were “so much more fun and interesting” and that he “would have felt that way without Ryan and Taylor,” adding a playful emoji.
She allegedly responded by comparing herself to Khaleesi from Game of Thrones, calling her husband and Swift her “dragons”.
Baldoni has also claimed that Reynolds mocked the director in Deadpool & Wolverine via Reynolds’ character “Nicepool.”
In the Marvel film, the sanitized version of Deadpool says lines such as “Where in God’s name is the intimacy coordinator?!” and compliments Ladypool (played by Lively) for “snapping back” into shape after giving birth.
Among Lively’s claims are that Baldoni ****-shamed her post-partum body during filming for It Ends With Us.
The trial for Lively v. Wayfarer Studios et al is scheduled for March 2026.

Best Settings for RTX 5090, 5070, 5070 Ti, 4090, 4070, 4070 Ti
Best Settings for RTX 5090, 5070, 5070 Ti, 4090, 4070, 4070 Ti
FromSoftware is all set to release Elden Ring: Nightreign for PCs on May 30, 2025. The game is a PvP and PvE spinoff of the critically acclaimed Elden Ring video game, and has players assemble a team of three and collaborate together in order to defeat the final boss.
It should come as no surprise that Nightreign features almost identical PC system requirements to those of Elden Ring, given its usage of the same game engine. The game does appear to be a fair bit more CPU dependent this time around, which might skew results for the RTX 5000 class of GPUs.
Why optimizing settings matters in Elden Ring: Nightreign
While the RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 can brute force their way through many games with relative ease, optimizing for performance is generally a far superior option. After all, most modern games are rather poorly optimized, making even the mighty RTX 5090 tremble at times.
Fine-tuning a game can result in smoother frame rates, and at times even greater than 60 FPS equivalents, which can in turn greatly enhance your experience. Some settings for Elden Ring are just poorly optimized and require tweaking to ensure more stability.
Substituting these values is especially more important for weaker GPUs, such as the RTX 4070, and offers a minimal hit to image quality.
Keeping that in mind, let us have a look at the best settings for Elden Ring: Nightreign, across a variety of Nvidia GPUs.
System Requirements for Elden Ring: Nightreign
Here are the PC system requirements for Elden Ring: Nightreign:
The PC system requirements are surprisingly low | Image Credits: FromSoftware
Minimum
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5-10600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 5500
RAM: 12 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (3 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX 580 (4 GB)
DirectX: Version 12
Storage: 30 GB; SSD preferred
Recommended
Operating System: Windows 11 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5-11600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 5600
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (8 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (8 GB)
DirectX: Version 12
Storage: 30 GB; SSD preferred
As seen from the PC system requirements above, Elden Ring is not a particularly demanding game. If anything, cards like the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 far exceed the capabilities of the GTX 1070 and should have no issues running the game.
However, optimizing the game should, in theory, prevent more frame rate drops and ensure a smooth 60 frames per second. This is even more apparent when we take into consideration options such as ray tracing and ultra settings.
Another thing to note here is that Nightreign is very likely to remain locked to 60 frames per second out of the box, something which was also prevalent in Elden Ring. Given that both games use the same engine, this is likely to remain unchanged.
Best settings for RTX 5090, 5070 and 5070 Ti in Elden Ring Nightreign
You can refer to the settings below:
Texture Quality: High
Antialiasing Quality: High
SSAO: High
Depth of Field: Off/Player preference
Motion Blur: Off/Player preference
Shadow Quality: High
Lighting Quality: High
Effects Quality: High
Volumetric Quality: High
Reflection Quality: High
Water Surface Quality: High
Shader Quality: High
Global Illumination Quality: High
Grass Quality: High
Ray tracing should be left enabled. Nightreign does support 4K resolutions out of the box, but is very unlikely to support ultrawide natively. These RTX 5070 and 5070 TI should be able to easily handle the game at High settings, and the RTX 5070 shouldn’t fall too far behind either.
Best settings for RTX 4090, 4070, 4070 Ti in Elden Ring Nightreign
Here are the best settings for these mid-range GPUs:
Texture Quality: High
Antialiasing Quality: High
SSAO: Medium
Depth of Field: Off/Player preference
Motion Blur: Off/Player preference
Shadow Quality: Medium
Lighting Quality: High
Effects Quality: High
Volumetric Quality: High
Reflection Quality: High
Water Surface Quality: High
Shader Quality: High
Global Illumination Quality: Medium
Grass Quality: High
These settings should be ideal for both 1080p and 1440p gameplay. Note that ray tracing is optional here, and can be enabled if so desired. The RTX 4070 is still quite a capable card, and should be able to handle the game at 1440p.
4K vs 1440p vs 1080p performance: Which resolution should you choose?
Ideally, one should choose resolutions closest to that of their native display resolution, with upscaling enabled. Unfortunately, Nightreign will likely not ship with any such option, making our performance leeway a bit more difficult.
The RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 should be more than enough | Image Credits: FromSoftware
As a general rule of thumb, however, the RTX 5090 and 4090, along with the 4070 Ti and 5070 Ti, should handle 4K gaming a whole lot better. The RTX 4070 and 5070 are better suited for 1440p gaming and require lowering resolutions.
All cards should hit 60 FPS with smartly calibrated resolutions and settings.
Ray tracing and DLSS/FSR/XeSS: Worth enabling?
Elden Ring Nightreign is unlikely to come with upscalers of any kind, which makes comparing these techniques a moot point. It is, however. possible to install third-party mods that unlock these features.
Nightreign should support ray tracing out of the box, though, and it should not make for a transformative experience. If your PC can handle it, it might be worth enabling. For most, though, it is best left disabled.
Elden Ring: Nightreign best settings summary table
You can find a table summarizing the settings below:
GPU
Resolution
Preset
Ray Tracing
RTX 5090, 4090
4K
High
On
RTX 5070 Ti, 4070 Ti
4K
High, with some tweaks to Medium
Off
RTX 5070, 4070
1440p
High, with some tweaks to Medium
Off
Final thoughts: Future proofing and expected updates
Nightreign is also expected to follow the same trend of FormSoftware titles being especially unusually unplayable at launch. Expect the game to run poorly, with a few uneven frametimes and dips.
The RTX 5070 and RTX 5090 are fantastic cards if you can get them for decent prices, and should last you well beyond the game’s lifespan.
Performance should end up being a lot more stable once patches are rolled out, though.
FAQs
Can the RTX 5090 play Elden Ring: Nightreign at 4K?: Yes, it can.
Does Elden Ring Nightreign have DLSS?: Unlikely to have DLSS or any upscaler.
Is the RTX 4070 Ti enough for Elden Ring: Nightreign?: At 1440p, it is more than enough.

US tests ramjet missile that could bolster war fighters’ attack range, speed
US tests ramjet missile that could bolster war fighters’ attack range, speed
The U.S. Navy successfully air-launched a Solid Fuel Integral Rocket Ramjet (SFIRR) from an unmanned vehicle for the first time, one step toward modernizing missile technology.
The effort by Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) appears to revive a decades-old concept to miniaturize missiles by combining an air-breathing ramjet with a solid fuel rocket.
The test also integrated the use of a fire control system on a BQM-34 unmanned target vehicle for live firing, demonstrating advancements in high-speed, long-range weapon capabilities. Launching the missile from an unmanned vehicle can allow warfighters to safely engage targets from greater distances, according to NAWCWD.
Warfighting advantage
In the past 12 months, advanced propulsion, avionics and fire control technologies were combined into the technology demonstrator. NAWCWD highlights that rapidly transitioning technologies from research to operational use is critical for maintaining a warfighting advantage.
Abbey Horning, product director of NAWCWD’s Advanced Concepts, Prototyping and Experimentation office, stated that the new successful integration validates key aspects of their design and moves them closer to delivering an advanced propulsion system that will provide warfighters with greater range and speed.
“We’re not just revisiting an old idea; we’re refining and modernizing it to fit today’s mission,” Horning said.
Solid Fuel Ramjet technology isn’t new
The Solid Fuel Ramjet technology is not new. However, it’s still related to modern battlefield.
The latest test advanced a missile design aimed at improving range and targeting for future Navy missions.
SFIRR simplifies missile propulsion by eliminating the complexity found in liquid fuel ramjet propulsion. This significantly reduces weight, allowing missiles to carry more payload and travel greater distances with increased maneuverability, according to a press release.
“SFIRR offers a balance of affordability, reliabilit,y and performance tailored to the Navy’s operational needs,” said Horning.
“We’ve been driving cars since the early 1900s, but that doesn’t mean we stopped improving them,” Ephraim Washburn, deputy director for energetics at NAWCWD.
“Solid fuel ramjet technology had significant investment in the 1970s and 1980s, but we’re making it a modern propulsion solution for the fleet today.”
Combat-credible technology
Washburn highlights that this is a combat-credible technology. “We are working to refine its range, endurance, and targeting capabilities.”
Washburn also stressed that technology evolution occurs across many industries. He compared SFIRR advancements to automotive improvements, where early designs laid a foundation, and ongoing developments continue to enhance performance.
Ramjet uses external air for combustion, it is a more efficient propulsion system for flight within the atmosphere than a rocket, which must carry all of its oxygen. Ideally suited for very high-speed flight within the atmosphere, ramjet systems can increase missile range.
Some reports highlighted that ramjets produce thrust only when the vehicle is already moving; ramjets cannot produce thrust when the engine is stationary or static.
Since a ramjet cannot produce static thrust, some other propulsion system must be used to accelerate the vehicle to a speed where the ramjet begins to produce thrust. The higher the speed of the vehicle, the better a ramjet works until aerodynamic losses become a dominant factor, according to some previous experiments.

Israel Plunges Into Darkness
Israel Plunges Into Darkness
After 19 months of war in Gaza, the Israeli government has decided to march deeper into the quagmire.
Israel has announced its intention to take and retain a significant part of the Gaza Strip. Call-up orders are going out to tens of thousands of already exhausted reservists. The battered, hungry population of Gaza is to be forced into an even smaller part of the narrow enclave. The lives of the remaining Israeli hostages are in greater danger than ever.
The plan came with a caveat: The escalation will reportedly not start until the end of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tour of the region next week, allowing for the possibility of a new hostage deal. But reports of an impending deal have become such a constant background murmur that few observers count on a diplomatic breakthrough to head off the new operation.
“We will achieve full, absolute victory in Gaza,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in Hebrew in a social-media clip just before the decision Sunday night by the security cabinet—the committee of senior ministers responsible for military affairs. “We are in the stages of victory,” Netanyahu added. Or, to paraphrase in American English: We can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
[Read: How to say no to a would-be autocrat]
For this Israeli, as for many others, the escalation is a promise to plunge deeper into darkness, militarily and morally.
The Israeli army will seek to take and hold more territory in Gaza and to “destroy all terror infrastructure, above- and belowground,” a government spokesperson said Monday. “Belowground” refers to ******’s tunnel network, which has bedeviled the Israeli army since the war began. What will be left standing aboveground remains to be seen.
The spokesperson, David Mencer, said that the objective was both to “return the hostages”—the 59 captives, alive and dead, still in Gaza—and to defeat ******. But Netanyahu made the order of his priorities clear in a controversial speech last week: Freeing the hostages was “an important goal,” he said, but the “supreme goal” was victory over ******. Or, as he put it in another clip for his social-media followers this week, to drive ****** “from the face of the Earth.”
Netanyahu has made this overambitious promise—of “absolute” triumph over ******—since early in the war, and has repeatedly said that it is around the corner. But total victory is a chimera. Reoccupying larger chunks of Gaza is unlikely to eliminate ******. Instead, it will expose Israel’s soldiers to a long war of attrition with the extreme Islamist organization. ******’s losses will mount, but this will not make the deaths on the Israeli side any easier to bear.
Israel’s military doctrine relies on mobilizing large numbers of civilians to fight short wars. This war is no longer short, and many reservists have spent more time in uniform than in civvies since October 7, 2023. They, their families, and their workplaces are very tired. Netanyahu’s government promises more exhaustion.
The ************ civilians of Gaza, of course, are much more exhausted and traumatized. In the name of protecting them, the Israeli army intends to order yet another evacuation, reportedly to a single “humanitarian zone” in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu said this week that the intention is for the army to continue to hold whatever territory it takes. Implicitly, then, ************ civilians won’t be returning until the promised day when ****** is erased—and maybe not even then.
If permanent displacement is the government’s policy, the proper term for it is ethnic cleansing—a moral catastrophe.
And what will happen inside the “humanitarian zone”? The government reportedly has a plan for providing food aid via a largely unknown foundation and private security firms. Nothing has been reported about who will govern the area, provide health services, or enforce public order. If Israel were to try to impose a military government, soldiers would be under constant attack. Netanyahu has been unwilling to discuss proposals for creating a new ************ government in Gaza. ****** is likely to fill the vacuum.
The security cabinet apparently paid little attention to this problem in setting its policy. It also reportedly ignored an explicit warning from the military chief of staff, General Eyal Zamir. “In the plan for a full-scale operation, we won’t necessarily reach the hostages,” Zamir told ministers in a preparatory session before Sunday’s decision, according to Israel’s Channel 13. “Keep in mind that we could lose them.”
As of now, Israel’s official count is that 21 hostages are still alive, the fate of three is unknown, and ****** is holding the bodies of 35. Netanyahu insists that military pressure is the only way to save the remaining living hostages. But no hostages have been found or released since fighting resumed in March. A New York Times investigation concluded that 41 hostages have died in captivity since the war began, including at least four who were killed in Israeli bombings and seven who were murdered by their captors to keep Israeli troops from rescuing them. Those dangers will only increase if the fighting intensifies.
[Read: Why 70 percent of Israelis want Netanyahu to resign]
The gap between the Israeli public and the government is most stark on the hostage issue. A recent poll found that more than two-thirds of Israelis see saving the hostages as the most important goal in the war, compared with one-quarter who say that toppling ****** is most important. Last month, nearly 1,000 current and former Air Force reservists signed a public letter calling on the government to reach an agreement immediately with ****** to release the hostages and end the war. That set off a wave of statements by reservists and veterans of other units.
So far, Netanyahu has refused to change course. To do so would mean admitting that his promise of absolute victory is hollow. It could spark a revolt by the two far-right parties in his coalition, and bring down his government.
It’s just possible, nonetheless, that Netanyahu will change his mind and finally respond to the fury and despair of his own people. Or that during his stops in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, the erratic American president will hear something to persuade him to tell Netanyahu to hold his fire. Or that ****** and Israel will agree to one of the latest proposals for a renewed cease-fire and hostage deal.
But if such a deus ex machina does not appear, there’s every reason to fear that Israel will plunge deeper into the morass.

Best Settings for AMD RX 9070 XT, 9070, 7900 GRE, 7800 XT, 6700XT
Best Settings for AMD RX 9070 XT, 9070, 7900 GRE, 7800 XT, 6700XT
FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Nightreign launches later this month, and brings a unique PvP and PvE twist to the classic Soulsborne formula. It is also set in the world of Elden Ring, and has quite a few things going for it.
The title is set to launch for PCs as well, and should not be very demanding in terms of PC hardware. With team red, things can get a bit dicey when it comes to ray tracing, though. Regardless, you can find a collection of estimated best settings for the game in the sections below.
Why optimizing settings matters in Elden Ring: Nightreign
Elden Ring Nightreign isn’t a particularly heavy game to run. The game mandates rather modest PC system requirements and is barely a step up when compared to Elden Ring, at least in terms of graphics.
However, Nightreign does appear to be more CPU-bound, so make sure to have a beefy CPU this time around. As far as AMD’s best options go, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT will likely remain top tier in terms of performance.
The 7800 XT and 7700 XT should deliver powerful 4K and 1440p gaming solutions, respectively, while the RX 6700 XT should be plenty fine for Medium settings at 1440p. The RX 6700 XT is still quite a capable card, after all.
However, it should be kept in mind that FromSoftware titles aren’t exactly known to be very optimized (at least on launch), so expect some performance hiccups here and there during the initial launch window. This is especially true for pre-RDNA 4 GPUs.
System Requirements for Elden Ring: Nightreign
Here are the PC system requirements for Elden Ring: Nightreign:
Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t a particularly demanding game | Image Credits: FromSoftware
Minimum
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5-10600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 5500
RAM: 12 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (3 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX 580 (4 GB)
DirectX: Version 12
Storage: 30 GB; SSD preferred
Recommended
Operating System: Windows 11 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5-11600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 5600
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 (8 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (8 GB)
DirectX: Version 12
Storage: 30 GB; SSD preferred
Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t a particularly demanding game – all things considered. However, it does come with a few gotchas, the first of which is a hard-coded 60 FPS cap, carried over from Elden Ring’s game engine.
No matter how much you push it, you will not be able to go over 60 FPS in the game, unless you use some modding tool. As such, we can get away with a lot higher settings (than usual) with the cap in mind.
Optimizing the game is potentially more important for AMD cards, given that their last-gen ray tracing implementation is really poor – when compared to Nvidia.
Best settings for RX 9070 XT, 9070, and 7900 GRE in Elden Ring Nightreign
Texture Quality: High
Antialiasing Quality: High
SSAO: High
Depth of Field: Off/Player preference
Motion Blur: Off/Player preference
Shadow Quality: High
Lighting Quality: High
Effects Quality: High
Volumetric Quality: High
Reflection Quality: High
Water Surface Quality: High
Shader Quality: High
Global Illumination Quality: High
Grass Quality: High
With the exception of the RX 7900 GRE, the other two cards can have ray tracing left enabled. AMD made a lot of improvements with the RX 9000 series, especially with regard to ray tracing.
Otherwise, all 3 GPUs should be quite capable of playing Elden Ring: Nightreign at 4K resolutions with no upscaling enabled.
Best settings for RX 7800 XT and 6700 XT in Elden Ring Nightreign
Here are the best settings for these mid-range GPUs:
Texture Quality: High
Antialiasing Quality: High
SSAO: Medium
Depth of Field: Off/Player preference
Motion Blur: Off/Player preference
Shadow Quality: Medium
Lighting Quality: High
Effects Quality: High
Volumetric Quality: High
Reflection Quality: High
Water Surface Quality: High
Shader Quality: High
Global Illumination Quality: Medium
Grass Quality: High
The combination of settings above should be enough for 1440p gameplay at 60 FPS. Those with an RX 6700 XT might find it in their best interests to tone down some of these settings, though, in case of any abnormalities.
4K vs 1440p vs 1080p performance: Which resolution should you choose?
For lower-end, budget-oriented GPUs, 1080p remains the better option here, especially if they have 4 GB VRAM or lower.
The RX 9070 XT can handle the game pretty well | Image Credits: FromSoftware
On the other hand, flagship tier cards such as the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT should be able to easily run the game at 4K, with max settings. Midrange GPUs such as the 6700 XT and 7800 XT should do fine at 1440p.
Ray tracing and DLSS/FSR/XeSS: Worth enabling?
Elden Ring: Nightreign does not support any upscaling methods (at least officially), so you simply cannot use techniques such as FSR to boost performance. Try looking for mods that inject the same into the game.
The game does support basic raytracing, though, which isn’t all that impressive. Consider disabling it if you run into performance hiccups.
Elden Ring: Nightreign best settings summary table
You can find a summarized combination of settings below, sorted for each GPU:

Final thoughts: Future proofing and expected updates
As is prevalent in the gaming industry of today, PC ports tend to be quite terrible in nature. Expect middling performance and poor optimization when trying to play the game day one. The original Elden Ring had its fair share of issues, and things should not change for Nightreign either.
In terms of a long-term investment, though, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT remain top tier, and should last you for years. It is generally not recommended to pick the other entries within this list unless you absolutely cannot afford it.

Anthony Edwards Accuses Baby Mama of “Trapping” Him with Pregnancy Plan Using Ovulation Tracker
Anthony Edwards Accuses Baby Mama of “Trapping” Him with Pregnancy Plan Using Ovulation Tracker
In a paternity and child support case that grows more contentious by the week, Minnesota Timberwolves phenom Anthony Edwards is going full legal blast on his ex-girlfriend Ayesha Howard. In court documents filed recently, Edwards accuses Howard of manipulative behavior and attempting to deceive the court by employing an ovulation tracker as a tool to secure financial assistance.
The 22-year-old basketball phenom is now requesting a judge to sanction Howard for what he describes as blatant and troubling abuse of the judicial system. The controversy surrounding Howard is his attempt to reopen a child support case in California despite a previous ruling that the state has no jurisdiction over the case.
Edwards Claims California Has No Jurisdiction and Accuses Howard of Forum Shopping to Improve Financial Result
Edwards and his lawyers are responding to Howard’s motion to rehear a case already decided, which directed California to have no standing in their child support case. Edwards says Howard’s attempt to transfer the case to another state is merely strategic forum shopping, a maneuver intended to obtain a more favorable monetary ruling.
His attorneys allege there is neither factual nor legal basis for California to be a part of the case. Edwards asserts that he and Howard did not have a ******* relationship within California and also claims she failed to present credible evidence of domicile there.
Edwards’ attorney stated that she has no signed lease, no utility bills, and no reliable evidence that she lives or works in California. Her only contacts with the state are part of a bad-faith scheme to manipulate the system and deceive the court into getting a California child support order.
The judge has already rejected Howard’s claim of jurisdiction, but her latest motion appears to be an ambitious attempt to reverse the decision and transfer the case under California law, which allows for far more generous child support determinations.
NBA Star Blasts Howard for Testifying with Ovulation Tracker as Evidence, Calling It Part of a “Planned Financial Decision”
The most inflammatory part of Edwards’ recent lawsuit filing is perhaps his reply to Howard’s filing of an ovulation calendar. The file, which was filed in the hope of substantiating her allegations regarding the timing of conception, has instead become the centerpiece of Edwards’ assertion that Howard’s pregnancy was always money-motivated.
His attorneys blame her for having a premeditated plan to become pregnant with the soon-to-be basketball sensation. The filing deems her actions a premeditated money maneuver and states that using the tracker paints a very ominous picture of her motives.
This is not some woman who was caught off her guard with an unexpected pregnancy, Edwards’ attorney contended. This is a woman who planned out her fertility cycle meticulously and chose her partner for his fame and money-making potential. It raises the unsettling questions about Ayesha’s motives and her believability.
According to Edwards, Howard’s use of the ovulation tracker as evidence is manipulative and reflective of a broader trend of unethical and dishonest practices.
Edwards Accuses Howard of Abusing the Legal System with Recycled Claims and Misleading Evidence
In his brief, Edwards doesn’t play nice. He states Howard is simply re-asserting issues that have already been resolved and attempting to receive a different outcome by making the same arguments in different wording.
The parties presented their case, and the court ruled, according to the brief. Ayesha was unhappy with the outcome and now attempts to get a second bite at the apple.
Edwards’ lawyers argue that this isn’t just a case of one paternity ruling or one motion for child support. It is a case of setting a precedent as to what the court system will tolerate regarding conduct. They argue that Howard is abusing the court process, wasting judicial time, and promoting a tale based on misinformation.
Frustrated with what he sees as ongoing legal posturing and deliberate deceit, Edwards is now seeking the court to sanction Howard officially. Her conduct is a blatant and sustained misuse of the judicial process, his lawyers claim, that has every intention of raking in further money from the situation.
If awarded, the sanction request would be extremely costly and legally damaging for Howard. Sanctions are made by the court only when the court finds one of the litigants in bad faith, providing false or irrelevant information, or willfully misleading the court. Edwards has now laid all such charges at Howard’s feet.
To date, the judge has not ruled on the motion for sanctions. However, the fact that the motion was requested in the first place suggests that this case is headed into much nastier and more adversarial waters.
A Child Support Dispute That’s Becoming a Full-Blown Legal Circus
What began as a routine disagreement about child support has evolved into an outright legal soap opera involving personal charges, jurisdictional wars, and accusations of financial scheming. Edwards, whose career was thriving with the Minnesota Timberwolves and who last week was one of the faces of Team USA Basketball, is now in the middle of an open and highly personal court battle.
Howard has not made any public comments regarding the latest charges, including the assertion that her pregnancy was part of a premeditated money-making scheme. She also hasn’t responded to Edwards’ claim that her connection to California is staged for legal purposes.
With the judge yet to pass judgment on the motion for sanctions, the public is glued to this unfolding spectacle, which continues to blur the line between celebrity trial headlines and profoundly intimate grievances.
Tune in, for if this petition is anything to judge by, the next episode of this soap opera will be full of theatrics.

Mitchell the man to end Cavs’ NBA playoff slide
Mitchell the man to end Cavs’ NBA playoff slide
Donovan Mitchell has refused to let another fourth-quarter lead slip away from Cleveland.
So with home fans on their feet, expecting Indiana to cut what had been a 24-point deficit to single digits, Mitchell took the game into his own hands. He hit a 13-foot fadeaway, then a pull-up three-pointer and finally found Max Strus for another triple and the Cavaliers went on to a 126-104 victory on Friday night.
“I couldn’t let it happen again, and it wasn’t just me,” Mitchell said after finishing with 43 points and nine rebounds to cut their Eastern Conference semi-final series deficit to 2-1.
“I know I scored, but like, we got stops, made plays. But for me, just trying to be the aggressor.”
The road team has won all three games, and the Pacers will have another chance to break that trend Sunday in Game 4.
But Cleveland were desperate to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole and used everything in their arsenal to hold on.
NBA Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley and key backup De’Andre Hutner returned from injuries after missing Game 2. All-Star guard Darius Garland also returned from a toe injury that kept him out of four straight games.
Strus made four triples and had 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a game the Cavs never trailed.
Bennedict Mathurin led the hosts with 23 points. Pascal Siakam had 18 and Tyrese Haliburton finished with four points and five assists — his first career home loss in a post-season game he’s appeared.
“This was a very poor effort at the beginning of the game, through so many parts of the game,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said.
“Clearly, I didn’t have these guys ready for this. Ty had a rough game. I have to do more to get him in better positions to have better shots.”
Tempers flared at times with the Pacers drawing five technical fouls. On the court, though, Cleveland controlled the game after breaking a 36-36 tie with a 25-4 run, which gave them a 66-45 halftime cushion.
Indiana closed to 104-93 early in the fourth before Mitchell and Strus led the game-sealing scoring flurry.
