Vivo V50 Elite Edition India Launch Date Leaked; Design Said to Differ From Vivo V50 Model
Vivo V50 was launched in India in February with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC. Now, the company is reportedly preparing to introduce the Vivo V50 Elite Edition soon, as the newest model in the Vivo V50 series. While the ******** smartphone brand has not officially confirmed the existence of a new Elite variant, a new report reveals its possible launch date. The purported Vivo V50 Elite Edition will reportedly feature a distinct design compared to the standard Vivo V50 model. However, it is expected to retain similar specifications, including the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, 6.77-inch AMOLED display, and a 50-megapixel dual rear camera unit.
Vivo V50 Elite Edition India Launch Date Revealed in New Leak
Citing unnamed industry sources, 91Mobiles reports that the Vivo V50 Elite Edition will debut in India on May 15. The new Elite variant is said to stand out primarily in terms of design, while retaining much of the same hardware and specifications as the standard Vivo V50.
If these claims are accurate, we can expect the Vivo V50 Elite Edition to ship with a 6.77-inch Full-HD+ (1,080×2,392 pixels) quad-curved AMOLED display. Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC, up to 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 2.2 onboard storage.
Like the Vivo V50, the upcoming Vivo V50 Elite Edition could pack two 50-megapixel sensors on the rear and a 50-megapixel selfie shooter. It is expected to pack a 6,000mAh battery with 90W wired fast charging support. It could also include Vivo’s Aura Light feature and ship with several AI-powered photo editing features.
Vivo’s V50 series in India currently includes the base Vivo V50 and Vivo V50e models. The Ultimate Edition model would be the third handset to arrive in the lineup.
The Vivo V50 was launched in India in February with a starting price tag of Rs. 34,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage option. The 8GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB RAM and storage variants are priced at Rs. 36,999 and Rs. 40,999, respectively.

Mitchell Johnson: Jack Della Maddalena’s UFC title shot is one he has long been destined for
Mitchell Johnson: Jack Della Maddalena’s UFC title shot is one he has long been destined for
One of Western Australia’s toughest athletes is back in the spotlight on Sunday when Jack Della Maddalena attempts to become a UFC champion.
Della Maddalena will fight for the welterweight title when he takes on current champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 315 in Montreal.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing ‘Della’ over the years, watching him train, and witnessing the progress he’s made throughout his career.
He is one determined individual who works very hard. Even before making it into the UFC, fighting as an amateur, he trained like a professional and did the extra one percenters.
Not much fazes him. The 28-year-old is a relaxed guy who enjoys whatever challenge is in front of him by being in the moment. This is his biggest moment so far, and nothing changes.
Jack’s time in the UFC has been short but the whole journey hasn’t been.
When I walked into Scrappy MMA gym in Willetton – where he trains – a few years back, I wasn’t sure what to expect. You can enter some fighting gyms and find the whole scene pretty intimating.
I must admit, I saw mixed martial arts as an untechnical sport at the time and probably expected to find big aggressive beasts with a couple of screws loose.
Instead, I never once felt threatened and was blown away by the calmness, composure and professionalism of Perth’s dedicated MMA fighters.
Della Maddalena has climbed a mountain just to get this opportunity, enduring four operations after breaking his left forearm in a TKO win over Gilbert Burns in March last year.
That last fight was a brutal one against a tough and experienced opponent. Despite all the setbacks with his recovery, Jack’s desire to get back in the Octagon and earn his shot at the welterweight title has been fierce.
Often, when a fighter is returning from an extended break, the term ‘ring rust’ is thrown about in the media. It’s like a batter or bowler in cricket who has been out for a while and lacks touch or rhythm or a footballer who comes back with an injury repaired but lacking ‘match fitness’.
All sports have a term they use, but in the end, Jack knows his game and knows the feeling of getting in the contest. His training simulates this, so it’s not going to be a shock to the system. He even proved that recently in camp, choking out Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Craig Jones in a training session.
Although I haven’t seen his training in recent times, I trust his coach, Ben Vickers, who believes Jack is ready. He said from day one that Jack will be a champion in the UFC one day. Whenever I’ve asked about his training, Ben says he’s prepared, now it’s time to execute.
Della Maddalena has most, if not all, of his team with him in Canada to support him during the title fight. They have had a good lead-up to this fight, getting over there early to acclimatise, and having his team working with Jack daily is vital.
Typically, a few members of the Scrappy team go over when a fight is on, but this one is special. It helps create a sense of normality, and the team usually sets itself up in an Airbnb so they can train and feel like they are at home. The support from back home in WA will be huge as well.

I truly believe Jack will be ready for this challenge. He has the focus, desire, and ambition to be a champion. He’s more than ready and has done enough to earn this title shot.
Seeing another UFC champion emerge from Australia just weeks after Alex Volkanovski’s title win would be remarkable.
Jack’s dream of becoming a UFC champion and climbing to the top of the sport has come around fast. He knows that the opportunity to fight for the title is a pivotal moment in his career, and he’s determined to make it count.
The work he’s put in during training camps, the sacrifices he’s made, and the challenges he’s overcome have all led him to this point.
You could even see in the face-off leading in that Jack is fired up and ready. All the talk is done. The long-term plan to get a title shot for Della Maddalena is here.
Like many elite athletes, Jack understands that each fight can define his legacy. He’s not just looking to compete; he wants to leave a lasting impression.
There’s a fire in him that drives him to not just succeed, but to do so in a spectacular fashion. Winning by knockout would not only validate his hard work but also showcase his skill and power in the Octagon.
The weight of expectation is palpable—not just from fans and commentators, but from himself. He’s set high standards and knows that achieving his dreams requires not only talent and hard work but also a mindset focused on excellence.
The moment to shine is here and he’s ready to seize it. Go and become a world champion, mate.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Dimensions Surface Online; Inner Screen Tipped to Feature Slim Bezels
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Dimensions Surface Online; Inner Screen Tipped to Feature Slim Bezels
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to debut in the coming months, and recent reports suggest that it could be the slimmest foldable in the world. A tipster has now leaked the dimensions of the purported Galaxy Z Fold 7, giving us an idea of the shape of the smartphone, which is expected to be wider and taller than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The next generation Galaxy Z Fold phone is also tipped to sport much slimmer bezels on the inner screen.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Dimensions (Expected)
An X (formerly Twitter) post by user Ice Cat on Friday compares the dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold SE (also known as the Samsung W25 in China). The tipster, who was previously known as Ice Universe, has a strong track record for leaking accurate information, especially related to Samsung devices.
A table posted by the leaker reveals that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will measure 158.4×143.1×3.9mm. On the other hand, the dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 are 153.5×132.6×5.6mm and the Samsung W25 (or Z Fold SE) measures 157.9×132.6×5.6mm.
If the leaked dimensions are accurate, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be both wider and taller than both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold SE. It will also be thinner than both smartphones, when folded and unfolded.
Earlier this week, the tipster claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 would be the slimmest foldable smartphone when it debuts later this year. At the time, it was claimed that the phone would measure 3.9mm when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded. This would make it slimmer than the Oppo Find N5, which measures 4.21mm (unfolded) and 8.93mm (folded).
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7′ s inner screen bezel is narrow. In the picture, it is Fold6, and the width of the bezel pointed by the arrow is 1.9mm. The Fold7 is directly dried to 1.0mm, and the outer screen bezel of the Flip7 is also very narrow, only 1.2 mm. pic.twitter.com/FCdLLdzWls
— ICE CAT (@UniverseIce) May 9, 2025
Another post by the user states that the inner display of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will have an incredibly thin 1mm bezel. This is a notable improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has a 1.9mm bezel. Meanwhile, the clamshell-style Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is tipped to arrive with a 1.2mm bezel on the cover display.
According to previous reports, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be launched in July. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, while the Galaxy Z Flip 7 model culd arrive with an Exynos 2500 SoC. We can expect to learn more about these handsets in the coming weeks.

Tesla Is Sitting on an Enormous Pile of Unsold Cybertrucks as Crisis Deepens
Tesla Is Sitting on an Enormous Pile of Unsold Cybertrucks as Crisis Deepens
Tesla’s Cybertruck, it’s fair to say, isn’t exactly flying off the shelves.
As Electrek reports, the automaker’s inventory of unsold Cybertrucks has reached a record high of over 10,000 units — even as it reportedly slows down production of the disastrous vehicle.
The figure is an estimate based on the number of Cybertruck listings in the US, tracked by Tesla-Info.com. If accurate, it’s an embarrassingly high amount of expensive vehicles out there — about a staggering $800 million worth, per the reporting — that have never even left the dealership lot.
In the entire first quarter of the year, for comparison, Tesla barely sold around 6,400 Cybertrucks, according to Cox Automotive.
Clearly, Musk’s company is having trouble suckering people into buying the stainless steel behemoths, and it’s not hard to understand why buyers are staying away. With complaints of it bricking after going through a car wash to breaking down after a single mile of driving, its reputation for being shoddily made is well earned.
It’s also become a symbol of public outrage against Musk, as the automaker faces worldwide protests for its CEO’s far-right politics and his role in the Trump administration.
The Cybertruck has also been recalled a whopping eight times since it first started shipping to customers in late 2023, One recall was because its accelerator got stuck in the down position. The latest recall, meanwhile, was to address the small issue of its glued-on body panels flying off, affecting nearly every single Cybertruck the company had sold at that point — approximately 46,000.
If you just did the mental math, then you’ll know that, at this rate, Tesla is nowhere near on track to match the amount of Cybertrucks it sold in 2024 this year. Consequently, it’s also an entire galaxy away from reflecting the one million Cybertruck reservations that were allegedly made ahead of its launch — or, for that matter, the 250,000 Cybertrucks sold per year that Musk promised would happen.
Right now, Tesla will be lucky if it cracks 20,000 Cybertrucks sold by the end of 2025.
To boost sales, Tesla introduced a cheaper Long Range Rear Wheel Drive version of the Cybertruck in April, with way less features and a still pretty steep price tag of $69,990. Behind the scenes, though, it’s signaling that it has little faith in the vehicle’s fortunes: according to Business Insider, Tesla has reduced production targets at several Cybertruck manufacturing lines over the past few months, shifting some employees who worked on the truck to work on the Model Y.

The beloved star was known for his influential role at Sydney’s 2SER.
Pompor had long worked the airwaves at the not-for-profit station, where he hosted the music program Jumping The Gap from 2007 – 2022.
No cause of death has been publicly released.
Pompor was known as a talented and vibrant DJ on the Sydney radio scene.
As co-host of the Groovescooter show, he celebrated the arts and music culture in the city, and indeed nationwide.

“His love of music documentaries started a movement of film screenings at the Golden Age Cinema that can best be described as all sold out!
“The curation of underground independent films mixed with classic revivals like Stop Making Sense were enjoyed by everyone who attended and deserve to keep going by the next generation.”
Former Newsreader Geoff Mark Field added his own tribute
“My sincere condolences to family and friends of Paris Pompor who has died aged 58,” Field wrote.

Bought an Apple device in the past 10 years? You could be owed money. Here’s how to claim it.
Bought an Apple device in the past 10 years? You could be owed money. Here’s how to claim it.
Apple is paying out $95 million to people who have bought an Apple device in the last 10 years. To qualify, you must believe Siri listened in on a conversation without your consent. Eligible claimants are being sent emails and postcards, but you can make a claim on your own.
Back in January, Apple agreed to settle a case over its Siri digital assistant. Now it’s your turn to get some of that money.
Claims are now being accepted for the class-action suit. To qualify, you need to have purchased an Apple device in the past 10 years—specifically an “iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch or Apple TV” between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. You’ll also have to believe that Siri activated on that device during a private conversation without your consent.
Apple settled a lawsuit that alleged it was capturing sensitive information via Siri without users’ knowledge and approval.
People who are known to be eligible to be included in the settlement will receive either an email or a postcard with information about how to make a claim and individual codes to do so. If you don’t receive one, you can head to the settlement’s webpage to submit a new claim.
You have until July 2, 2025 to file your claim.
While $95 million is a big pool, don’t expect to pocket a ton of money from this. As you might imagine, the claim pool is fairly large, given the popularity of Apple devices and the sizable buy-in *******. Most claimants will receive about $20 per device.

Maga criticises the first American pope as not ‘America First’
Maga criticises the first American pope as not ‘America First’

BBC News
Reuters
Former White House official Steve Bannon predicted friction between Pope Leo XIV and President Trump
Catholicism has rarely been more prominent in US politics as the Trump administration openly embraces advisers and officials who proudly say faith has shaped their politics.
But any jubilation on the American Make America Great Again right about the new Pope this week quickly dissipated as key voices from Donald Trump’s Maga movement came to a disappointed conclusion: the first American Pope does not appear to be “America first”.
Little is known about the political leanings of Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago.
He has voiced concerns for the poor and immigrants, chosen a name that may reference more liberal church leadership, and he appears to have both supported the liberal-leaning Pope Francis and criticised the US president’s policies on social media.
But the president so far has said only that Leo’s election was a “great honour” for the US. Still, some of Trump’s most prominent supporters were quick to attack Pope Leo, lambasting him as a possible challenge to Trump and on the perception that he will follow Pope Francis in areas like immigration.
“I mean it’s kind of jaw-dropping,” Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon told the BBC on Friday, speaking of Leo’s election.
“It is shocking to me that a guy could be selected to be the Pope that had had the Twitter feed and the statements he’s had against American senior politicians,” said Bannon, a hard-right Trump loyalist, practising Catholic and former altar boy.
And he predicted that there’s “definitely going to be friction” between Leo and Trump.
Watch: ‘Exciting day to be a Chicago Catholic’ – Chicagoans react to Pope Leo XIV
The Pope’s brother, John Prevost, told The New York Times that he thinks his brother would voice his disagreements with the president.
“I know he’s not happy with what’s going on with immigration,” he said. “I know that for a fact. How far he’ll go with it is only one’s guess, but he won’t just sit back. I don’t think he’ll be the silent one.”
Recent survey data shows that about 20% of Americans identify as Catholic, according to the non-partisan Pew Research Center.
About 53% identify with or lean towards the Republican Party, though there’s plenty of nuance, too: America’s two Catholic presidents, John F Kennedy and Joe Biden, were both Democrats. And nearly two-thirds of US Catholics believe abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances – a departure from the Church’s current stance.
US Catholics also broadly supported Pope Francis: 78% of those surveyed in February viewed him favorably, including a majority of Catholic Republicans.
A number of Catholics in the new Pope’s home city of Chicago on Thursday aired disappointment with President Trump and said they hoped Pope Leo XIV would follow the path of his predecessor.
“We hope he’ll continue with Francis’s agenda going forward,” said Rick Stevens, a Catholic deacon from New Jersey who happened to be visiting Chicago when he heard the news.
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops, which leads and coordinates US Catholic activities, celebrated Pope Leo’s election and the message it sends.
“Certainly, we rejoice that a son of this nation has been chosen by the cardinals, but we recognise that he now belongs to all Catholics and to all people of good will,” the conference said in a statement. “His words advocating peace, unity, and missionary activity already indicate a path forward.”
Though Maga supporters represent a small subset of US Catholics, it’s one with outsized access to conservative media and Trump’s ear.
On Bannon’s War Room podcast – known for its hard-right, pro-Trump bent – one guest after another heaped criticism on the new Pope.
“This guy has been massively embraced by the liberals and the progressives,” said Ben Harnwell, a journalist who led Bannon’s efforts to establish what he calls a “gladiator school” for the “Judeo-Christian West” outside of Rome.
“He is one of their own… he has [Pope] Francis’s DNA in him,” Harnwell said.
The new Pope’s brother, Louis Prevost, says his sibling was always dedicated to the church
Jack Posobiec, another Maga commentator dialing in from Rome, was blunt: “This choice of the American cardinal was done as a response, as a message to President Trump.”
The full picture of what led to Pope Leo’s selection on Thursday is still emerging and church decisions don’t map neatly onto US politics. Still, watchers around the world have pored over Pope Leo’s social media profiles in search of clues about his leanings and beliefs.
An X account under his name, with tweets going as far back as 2015, shares links to criticism of Trump’s approach to immigration and hints at other political views, such as stricter gun control.
In February, the account sharply rebuked the US vice-president by posting a link to an opinion piece titled “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others”.
The account also posted a link to a letter from Pope Francis after he clashed with Vance over church doctrine and immigration. Vance – a Catholic convert – had given an interview in defence of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
Vance has routinely invoked his faith in defense of the administration, particularly immigration policies, which the White House has said put “America first”.
“There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbour, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritise the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that,” Vance told Fox News.
But US Democrats were not spared either on the account, which has more than a decade of posts. They appear to support Catholic employers who refuse to pay for contraceptives via employee health plans, and following the 2016 US presidential election, one post links to an article accusing Democrat Hillary Clinton of ignoring pro-life Catholic voters.
The BBC asked the ******** to confirm the account was Leo’s, but did not receive a response.
Vice-President Vance told conservative broadcaster Hugh Hewitt on Friday: “I try not to play the politicisation of the Pope game.
“I’m sure he’s going to say a lot of things that I love. I’m sure he’ll say some things that I disagree with, but I’ll continue to pray for him and the Church despite it all and through it all, and that’ll be the way that I handle it.”
The new Pope’s LGBTQ views are also unclear, but some groups, including the conservative College of Cardinals, believe he may be less supportive than Pope Francis.
Matt Walsh, a commentator with the conservative Daily Wire, wrote: “There are some good signs and bad signs with this new Pope. I want to see what he actually does with his papacy before I pass any kind of judgment.”
But some of the most dedicated Maga supporters already have made up their minds.
Laura Loomer, a far-right influencer who has Trump’s ear, swaying the president on top personnel decisions, called the new Pope “anti-Trump, anti-Maga, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis”.
Bannon, who had suggested Leo as a dark horse for the papacy, predicted tensions between the White House and ******** – and said they could even tear apart American Catholics.
“Remember, President Trump was not shy about taking a shot at Pope Francis,” he said.
“So if this Pope – which he will do – tries to come between President Trump and his implementation of the mass deportation programme, I would stand by.”

NZ’s ****** Ferns deny Wallaroos again in Pacific Four
The ****** Ferns have maintained their stranglehold over the Wallaroos to open the Pacific Four Series with a 38-12 victory over the hosts in Newcastle.
Doubles to winger Ayesha Leti-l’iga and exciting teenage fullback Braxton Sorensen-McGee on debut, plus further five-pointers to prop Chryss Viliko and centre Sylvia Brunt earned New Zealand their 28th victory from 28 Tests against Australia.
But the Wallaroos will claim a morale win of sorts after dominating much of the second half at McDonald Jones Stadium and clearly narrowing the gap on the world champions.
The ****** Ferns thumped the Wallaroos 62-0 in Brisbane in their most recent encounter.
On Saturday, the Wallaroos briefly threatened a famous triumph after pulling the deficit back to 26-12 with 15 minutes remaining through deserved second-half tries to front-rowers Eva Karpani and Ashley Masters.
Jo Yapp’s team were unfortunate to trail 26-0 at the break after officials missed a clear knock-on, before 18-year-old Sorenson-McGee’s first try was awarded in the 38th minute.
Adding to the Wallaroos’ frustration was a no-try ruling against Georgina Friedrichs after TV replays showed the classy centre had won the race to a brilliant chip kick from scrumhalf Tia Hinds to touch down.
Sevens star Hinds was superb running the show for the Wallaroos, while lock Kaitlan Leaney was enormous, controlling the lineout and Australia’s effective rolling maul.
The tournament continues next Saturday, with the Wallaroos facing the USA in Canberra, and the ****** Ferns up against second-ranked Canadians in Christchurch.

Backstabbed US auto companies blast Trump’s trade deal with Britain
Backstabbed US auto companies blast Trump’s trade deal with Britain
America’s automakers have strafed President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful” tentative trade deal with the U.K.
Ford, GM and Stallantis complained the “deal,” which hasn’t yet been officially agreed to, will actually hurt U.S. automakers by putting them at a competitive disadvantage with British companies.
Under the deal, Britain can send a quota of 100,000 cars annually to the U.S. with a 10 percent tariffs (amounts over that level will face 27.5 percent tariffs). Steel exports will be tariff free.
The U.S. carmakers said their vehicles produced in Canada and Mexico, or produced with parts from those countries or with steel from those countries, continue to face devastating 25 percent tariffs.
“Under this deal, it will now be cheaper to import a U.K. vehicle with very little U.S. content than a … vehicle from Mexico or Canada that is half American parts,” said the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Detroit Three automakers. “This hurts American automakers, suppliers, and auto workers.”
The statement further complained: “We are disappointed that the administration prioritized the *** ahead of our North American partners. We hope this preferential access for *** vehicles over North American ones does not set a precedent for future negotiations with Asian and European competitors.”
Ford, GM and Toyota have already predicted hundreds of billions of dollars in extra costs due to Trump’s trade war. Much of the costs will be paid by the car companies to cover tariffs on imported parts or steel will be passed onto the American consumer.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the *** agreement is a “good deal” for US carmakers, but did not explain how that’s possible.
Donald Trump loves his ‘big, beautiful’ tentative trade ‘deal’ with Britain. American automakers don’t (AP)
She insisted that Trump listens to the concerns of the auto industry and wants to see them succeed.
“The president wants to put them on the best pedestal to compete,” Leavitt said. “This is a good deal for them, too.”
Other critics have bashed the plan, pointing out that beyond Trump’s exemption for British steel, his across-the-board 10 percent tariff remains on all other products around the world (and still including Britain).
That means American importers will have to continue to pay those levies, and pass on some if not all of the extra costs to U.S. consumers, leaving them in a worse situation than before Trump took office.

Weapon and Armor Design Is Not the Only Thing Helldivers 2 Has in Common With Starship Troopers
Weapon and Armor Design Is Not the Only Thing Helldivers 2 Has in Common With Starship Troopers
When Arrowhead’s co-op shooter exploded onto the scene last year, gamers immediately recognized its spiritual connection to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 cult classic. The gray-and-****** armor, the rounded helmets, the endless waves of insectoid enemies—the visual parallels between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers are undeniable.
But Super Earth’s war against the Terminids runs deeper than mere aesthetic homage. The connections between these two franchises extend far beyond power armor and bug guts, reaching into the realm of biting social commentary that both properties execute with gleeful abandon.
More than just bugs and guns: the shared DNA of managed democracy
The most fascinating parallel between Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers isn’t the combat—it’s the mockery of ultra-nationalism that permeates both worlds.
While Verhoeven’s film was initially misunderstood as endorsing fascism, time revealed its brilliant satire of militaristic propaganda. Helldivers 2 cranks this satire to eleven, with its “Managed Democracy” and comically over-the-top patriotism.
Every mission briefing drips with jingoistic rhetoric about spreading freedom to planets that never asked for it. Players gleefully delete sensitive data from hard drives not to keep it from the bugs (who couldn’t read it anyway) but to hide information from Super Earth’s own citizens.
The game doesn’t just borrow Verhoeven’s aesthetic—it embraces his scathing critique of war propaganda and imperial expansion.
Even the ranking system contains a brilliant Starship Troopers easter egg. After reaching the prestigious “10-Star General” rank at level 130, players bizarrely get demoted to “Private” at level 140 and finally “Super Private” at level 150.
This seemingly odd choice directly references the film’s Drill Sergeant who demotes himself to Private just to get back to the frontlines and kill more bugs—relatable much, fellow Helldivers?
From Johnny Rico’s approval to Extermination competition

When Casper Van Dien, who played protagonist Johnny Rico in the original film, watched Helldivers 2 footage, his reaction was pure delight. The actor immediately recognized the game’s loving tribute to the movie that defined his career.
Speaking with Gamology during a reaction video, Van Dien couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for the similarities he spotted:
I see it all. I see the way the characters talk, and what they say. I see the bugs and everything. It’s such a tribute to Starship Troopers. It’s really quite wonderful.
Van Dien even gave the game a perfect 10/10 score, though he did express some reservations about those “tactical” capes: “It’s cool, but… Helldivers look just like being out there in the thing. They’re throwing capes in, which probably would’ve gotten on my nerves.”
Interestingly, Helldivers 2 isn’t the only game drawing from this well. Starship Troopers: Extermination, the officially licensed FPS game, released its full version in October 2024 after a year in early access. While it offers 16-player co-op (compared to Helldivers 2′s 4-player squads), it hasn’t captured the same cultural zeitgeist as Arrowhead‘s satirical masterpiece.
Perhaps that’s because Helldivers 2 doesn’t just copy Starship Troopers’ homework—it understands what made Verhoeven’s film special. The game’s success comes from recognizing that beneath the bug-squashing action lies a darkly comic critique of militarism that’s as relevant today as it was in 1997.

The Meru in Sanur a luxury escape for medical tourism patients
The Meru in Sanur a luxury escape for medical tourism patients
If you travel often enough or for long enough, sooner or later you’re going to get sick overseas. The last time it happened to me was in Bali when I felt a tickle in the back of my throat while waiting in the ****** at immigration. By the time I checked in to my hotel, it had developed into a full-blown cold: runny nose, burning throat and inescapable lethargy.
But as luck would have it, I’d booked a stay at The Meru, a luxury resort that opened last year on the beachfront at Sanur that was designed not only to please the eye but for the convalescence of discharged patients at the new Bali International Hospital. A private facility specialising in cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology and hepatology, and the first hospital that allows foreign doctors to practise medicine in Indonesia, the hospital is only 500m from the Meru and is projected to turn Sanur into a world-class medical tourism destination.
Hotel rooms generally range in size from 20sqm to 60sqm. But at The Meru they range from 83sqm to 160sqm. Normally I find large hotel rooms over-the-top, as I spend most of my time outside, exploring the surrounding area or doing activities at the resort. The itinerary for my two-night, three-day stay included sunrise yoga classes, a Sanur cycling tour, a 60-minute Balinese “Apun” massage, a sound healing ritual, chef-cooked meals at The Meru’s restaurants plus a candlelit seafood feast on the edge of the beach.
All of that went out the window when I got sick — I spent 90 per cent of my time at The Meru inside my room. But because of its size and the different sitting options: there were two lounge settings, one inside and another on an outdoor terrace overlooking a private tropical garden, I didn’t have to spend all day in bed. Soaking in the bathtub, which faced glass sliding doors overlooking a rock garden, offered another distraction and sinusitis relief. It didn’t take a great leap of the imagination to see how much more pleasant it would be for someone to stay here while recovering from surgery compared to being holed up in a standard hotel room.

When the hotel ambassador at The Meru heard I cancelled my massage because I was sick, she brought me ginger and turmeric tea, an age-old Indonesian recipe that did wonders on my throat. The room service menu was extensive but I ordered the same item for every meal: a delicious laksa soup with egg noodles, baby roast chicken, bean sprouts, spring onion, egg and a coconut curry chicken broth exploding with goodness and overflowing with flavour.
After two nights my health had improved, and I was able to spend my last day walking around the resort, taking in the impressive architecture, the marble and wood-panelled walls, sculptures and indoor water fountains, and cooling off in the 50sqm oceanfront pool.

The Meru is in Sanur, a beach town popular among grey nomads and young families, on Bali’s south-east coast, 40 minutes’ drive from the international airport. Room rates start at $389 per night, including breakfast for two and free activities. See themerusanur.com.

Bun scrambling sets off festival season
Bun scrambling sets off festival season
Hong Kong has this week been thanking its lucky buns.
A local delicacy, the buns are called “ping on bao” and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival to celebrate them is inscribed on the ******** territory’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The festival includes a “bun-scrambling competition”, a spokesperson for Hong Kong Tourism Board explaining: “At midnight, the legendary Bun-Scrambling Competition begins. Twelve climbers race up a roughly 14m tower covered in lucky buns (ping on bao), grabbing as many as they can.
“Higher buns earn more points, and the top scorer wins. Meanwhile, the competitor with the most buns earns the playful title of ‘Full Pockets of Lucky Buns’.”
Held in the fishing village on outlying island Cheung Chau, the festival was recognised as part of China’s national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2011.
It honours sea god Pak **** who, it is said, saved the island from a plague in the 18th century.

Number of ‘tariff’ mentions has soared past ‘AI’ on earnings calls
Number of ‘tariff’ mentions has soared past ‘AI’ on earnings calls
Move over artificial intelligence. There’s a new hot topic on corporate earnings calls in 2025: tariffs. The word “tariffs” has come up on more than 350 earnings calls of S & P 500 -listed companies reporting first quarter results, according to a CNBC analysis of call transcripts compiled by AlphaSense. By contrast, the term “AI” has been mentioned on less than 200 calls in the same *******. Mentions of tariffs have soared in recent weeks as President Donald Trump’s plan for steep levies announced last month has put both C-suites and Wall Street on high alert. That’s biting into time on calls with analysts and investors that corporate management formerly used to discuss AI, which has been a buzzword ever since the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022. The import taxes have stirred anxiety in part because of fears that they might push up prices, dampen spending and drive the economy into a recession. More than 60% of CEOs in an April survey said that they expect some sort of economic slowdown in the next six months, and nearly three-fourths said tariffs would hurt their business. “We are entering unchartered territory as the trade tariffs start to have a more significant impact beginning in the second quarter,” said Christopher Clulow, head of investor relations at Cummins , during the Indiana engine maker’s call with analysts earlier this week. “The breadth and changing nature of the tariffs have introduced a great degree of uncertainty.” Rising ‘uncertainty’ Cummins was one of many companies that said tariffs were muddying the ability to make accurate forecasts for future performance. Many firms said they were simply leaving financial outlooks unchanged given the evolving nature of the levies. Others adjusted figures to reflect how current plans might affect business. That was due to the suspension of many of Trump’s reciprocal tariffs for three months, until early July, after the president unveiled his original tariff policy on April 2. For medical equipment maker Solventum , a spinoff from 3M in ealry 2024, the overhang of tariffs led management to keep its full-year earnings per share guidance unchanged. That was in spite of the company’s stronger business that executives said in other circumstances would have led them to boost their outlook. “To be clear, tariffs will be a headwind for us this year,” Solventum CEO Bryan Hanson said on the company’s earnings call Thursday. “Without them, we would be raising our EPS guidance commensurate with the underlying momentum we’re seeing in the business.” Part of the hesitation expressed by business centers on understanding how the tariffs will affect consumers’ view of the economy. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index in April fell to one of the lowest levels ever recorded since it began in the early 1950s. Tariffs “have created significant uncertainty for small businesses, while concerns over escalating prices for imported goods have weighed on consumer confidence,” eBay CEO Jamie Iannone said during the online resale platform’s earnings call at the end of last month. Some executives directed their criticism at Trump’s policy while speaking with analysts. “We support the U.S. government’s goals to increase domestic investment,” Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks said last week. “However, we don’t believe tariffs are the right mechanism.” — CNBC’s Nick Wells contributed to this report.

Elden Ring Creator Hidetaka Miyazaki Was Nervous About His Image in Gaming Industry
Elden Ring Creator Hidetaka Miyazaki Was Nervous About His Image in Gaming Industry
Hidetaka Miyazaki is easily one of the most important game directors of the last two decades. In his time at FromSoftware, he has made some of the most challenging and widely successful games in the industry. We have an entire sub-genre of games dedicated to the games that he has made. But did you know the creator of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring is just a shy guy?
As we’ve learned from multiple interviews over the years, Miyazaki wants his games to take the spotlight, not him. The interviews have painted a picture of someone uncomfortable with fame, reluctant to showcase his work to even his own family, and far more concerned about his games than the attention they bring him.
Hidetaka Miyazaki has always wanted his games to be the center of attention
Hidetaka Miyazaki joined FromSoftware during the PlayStation 2 era and made an early impact with his work on Armored Core: Last Raven. According to a Game Informer interview with a fellow FromSoftware developer, it was clear even then that he possessed an uncanny drive and creative spark. Well, that’s not hard to believe now, is it? We’ve seen so many hits from him since.
Miyazaki-san joined FromSoftware when the industry was dominated by the PlayStation 2… It was pretty obvious that he had a strong motivation for working on the game… It became clear early on that he stood out from the rest of the developers at FromSoftware.
The developer also went on to say that while Miyazaki can appear outgoing in professional settings, he is actually quite shy. He often finds it difficult to handle fan interactions at events like E3 and prefers not to be the center of attention.
Although he pretends to be an outgoing person, he’s actually pretty shy. I’ve even heard that members of the media and fans have asked him for little conversations when seeing him at game conventions like E3. But he’s told me he has difficulty fulfilling those requests properly.
This sense of humility is also deeply rooted in his personal life. In March 2024, Miyazaki admitted that he doesn’t even allow his family to play his games. You’d think it’s because of their difficulty, but no. “I don’t want to let my family play my games, because I feel like they’d see a bad part of me… I don’t know. I’d feel embarrassed,” he said.
It makes sense, obviously. The games that Miyazaki has made all have some of the darkest worlds and themes that we’ve seen in games. So it’s only natural that he’d feel hesitant to share it with his family. Especially if you consider the kind of mindstate you’d have to be in to draw those kinds of ideas.
The future of FromSoft should be bright thanks to him
We can’t wait for the next games from the studio. | Image Credit: FromSoftware
Even with the monumental success of Elden Ring and his other games, Miyazaki hasn’t let all the popularity and acclaim get to his head or affect him or the studio. “No decision is based on any assumption that, hey, we did it once, it’s going to happen again,” he explained to The Guardian back in 2024. To him, this fuels better creativity and decision-making.
Today, even as the president of FromSoftware, Miyazaki remains deeply involved in game development. Since the launch and success of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, the studio has started experimenting with new, smaller-scale projects so other developers and directors within FromSoft can gain experience.
Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods are the two upcoming projects from FromSoft that we know of. Miyazaki is personally directing The Duskbloods, which will be a Nintendo Switch 2 title. Whatever direction the studio takes now, Miyazaki can be sure that fans are ready for whatever comes out.
