  2. Harold Halibut's most enduring running gag is about Sonsuz Ask, a Turkish soap opera that seems to be the only TV series the game's space-based denizens thought to take with them into the stars. Problem is, Sonsuz Ask is a real bumpy ride. Its most ardent fans will try to sell you on it—just wait for it to really pick up in season 22—but the hard truth is that you'll have to endure a lot of long, barren stretches before you get to the good stuff. Even in space, you probably have better things to do with your time... Read more.View the full article
  3. Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Sony is getting ready to release a more powerful PS5 console, possibly by the end of this year. After reports of leaked PS5 Pro specifications surfaced recently, The Verge has obtained a full list of specs for the upcoming console. Sources familiar with Sony’s plans tell me that developers are already being asked to ensure their games are compatible with this upcoming console, with a focus on improving ray tracing. Codenamed Trinity, the PlayStation 5 Pro model will include a more powerful GPU and a slightly faster CPU mode. All of Sony’s changes point to a PS5 Pro that will be far more capable of rendering games with ray tracing enabled or hitting higher resolutions and frame rates in certain titles. Sony appears to be encouraging... Continue reading… View the full article
  4. In the world of strategy and management game Goblin Stone, the goblins are nearly extinct. Getting murdered in large numbers by adventurers hungry for a quick experience point and a slack handful of coin will do that. I cannot tell you that you will want to bestow protection and prosperity on these gribbly green niblets. They exhibit a tweeness that you’ll either find charming or despicably manipulative, even when they’re showering in the blood of their enemies. Should you want to, though, Goblin Stone offers you the chance to rescue these maligned misfits from the brink of extinction, rebuilding their kingdom and leading them on outings to take the ****** to all those heroes that have spotlight-hogged the left side of your screens for far too long. One of the more barbaric is Ceaser's Legion, and while they may come across as pure villains in the base game, Nova Arizona wants to improve them. View the full article

  14. While there may be many opportunities to find love in the cosmos of Starfield, one player has taken it to the next level by making romance an extremely efficient way of boosting one's abilities. While Bethesda's latest RPG is littered with NPCs to discover, there aren't too many that are willing to throw caution to the wind and date the protagonist, given their dangerous lifestyle. Fortunately, there are a few that are daring enough to partner up and while there are some fun story moments that come from these interactions, they feel fairly limited in their scope. 15. The boss of Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has ruled out a transmog system coming to the hit PC and PlayStation 5 co-op shooter, insisting: “it doesn’t make sense.” Ever since Helldivers 2’s explosive launch in February, some players have called for a transmog system for the game’s myriad armor pieces. Transmog, short for transmogrify, itself a portmanteau of "transfigure" and "modify", would theoretically let players change the appearance of armor pieces without affecting their stats. Helldivers 2 armor does feature gameplay affecting stats, and some are deemed more “meta” than others. One of the most popular armor pieces gives players a 50% chance not to **** when taking lethal damage, for example. Responding to a user on X/Twitter, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said a transmog system wouldn’t make sense for Helldivers 2, and put that down to a commitment to realism. “We are not doing transmog,” Pilestedt said. “It doesn't make sense - equipment looks different because it has different effects. Swapping one for the other is like having an apple that tastes like bacon or the other way around.” While Pilestedt’s comments are sure to disappoint some Helldivers 2 players, it is consistent with the philosophy underpinning the game. Things work as they look like they should, from the way weapons ***** to ****** weak points. Even loading into a mission and dropping down onto a planet is rooted in this idea that everything you see is happening in real-time and for a reason. Indeed, much of Helldivers 2’s eye-catching emergent gameplay stems from this design. A transmog system would perhaps undermine Helldivers 2's thus far crystal clear visual communication. 23. Helldivers 2 players are getting frustrated by the game's overly zealous ***** damage, but developer Arrowhead has promised a fix is in the works. Earlier this month, as part of Helldivers 2's update that added in blizzards and sandstorms, the damage that ***** caused also received a tweak. However, this particular tweak hasn't been well-received, as it's essentially causing players to **** from ***** damage in just seconds, which unsurprisingly annoyed a lot of players. Thankfully, it seems like a change is on the way, as in the game's official Discord, community manager Thomas 'Twinbeard' Petersson has assured players that the team is working on making ***** not so overwhelming (thanks, PCGamesN). "We're going through '***** as a whole' at the moment," wrote Petersson in response to one Discord user. "The works - DPS, DOT, the host thingie, not dying in two seconds from just touching it etc. Probably introducing fixes in parts, but we're on it like Donkey Kong on barrels!" In a separate message to another user, Petersson went on to acknowledge how the ***** damage is "ridiculous" writing that it's "at least wrong and something we’re changing… It's an elaborate process, so we’re doing it in parts. More info to follow." Read more View the full article
  24. The former boss of Blizzard Entertainment has suggested a post-purchase tip feature that would let players give $10 or $20 extra to the developers of special games. Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra tweeted that he’s often felt that upon completion of a particularly enjoyable single-player game, he’d like to give more money to the developers “because it was worth more than my initial $70 and they didn't try to nickel and dime me every second.” Games Ybarra mentioned that had sparked such a feeling include Guerrilla’s Horizon Zero Dawn, Sony Santa Monica’s **** of War, Rockstar’s Red ***** Redemption 2, Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3, and FromSoftware’s Elden Ring. “I know $70 is already a lot, but it's an option at the end of the game I wish I had at times,” Ybarra continued. “Some games are that special.” It’s fair to say the reaction to the suggestion is mixed, with many people saying they’re already forking out plenty of money for video games. Others have pointed out that some game platforms, such as [Hidden Content], already allow tips, and that small indie developers often use established platforms for donations. Many have also pointed out that any extra revenue generated through tips would invariably end up in the pockets of publishers, as opposed to the developers themselves, at least for the majority of triple-A releases. And if such a system were to hit the likes of Steam, the PlayStation Store, or the Xbox store, would Valve, Sony, and Microsoft all expect a cut? On the other hand, others have backed the idea. Paul Kilduff-Taylor of Mode 7 Games tweeted: “People have discovered various ingenious ways to be ****** about this but adding a ‘pay more if you want’ option to major stores would straightforwardly be excellent for devs - it works very well on Bandcamp.” Ybarra ended his post acknowledging that the tipping idea won’t be for everyone. “I know most will dislike this idea,” he said. “BTW, I realize we are tired of ‘tipping’ in everything else - but I view this different from a pressure to tip type scenario many face and give feedback on.” The video game industry is currently struggling amid one of the toughest periods for developers in recent memory, with thousands of staff ***** off and an ever-growing list of studios shut down. This comes during a push for unionization across the industry as staff seek better protections from corporate cuts. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 25. Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree is just months away but dataminers are still discovering secrets within the base game, this time in unused alternate underground maps likely related to a scrapped "cataclysm" system. YouTuber Sekiro Dubi, who recovered an unused opening for the game earlier in 2024, uploaded a video showcasing the unused maps and how they were likely related to the cataclysm system, which would see Elden Ring's world of The Land Between changed drastically during gameplay. While the video shows a somewhat put together overworld map available, these unused areas are almost completley void of assets, instead only having the base shape of the world formed in bright blue and green polygons. Sekiro Dubi theorised these unused areas would have been made available through the cataclysm system, which would change familiar areas of Elden Ring similar to how a part of the map does actually change in the full game following the defeat of Starscourge Radahn. One of these unused cataclysms would occur over that boss's arena too, as a small ***** at the bottom of a crater would lead on to a few new areas, which Sekiro Dubi explores in the video. These unused areas are still incredibly complex despite their lack of assets, but it seems developer FromSoftware just had to draw a line somewhere in its already colossal role-playing game. The fact new secrets are still being discovered in FromSoftware's latest speaks to how much it captured the attention of fans upon its launch in 2022. Elden Ring proved somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, with players finding a ton of different ways to interact with the game. Fans played it using a Fisher Price toy, the Nintendo Switch Ring Fit controller, and someone even made a working VR version of the game. Many are therefore waiting with bated breath for the June 21 release of Shadow of the Erdtree, which is sure to add hundreds, if not thousands, of new secrets and story threads to be discovered. In fact, even its release date announcement drew hoards of players back to the Elden Ring. In our 10/10 review, IGN said: "Elden Ring is a massive iteration on what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its relentlessly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our own path."
