  1. Okay, you've read the title, and I know what you're thinking: he's gone mad, off the rails, believes anything he sees. And some of that might be true, but a lot of folks—reputable leakers, mind you—believe that HL3 or something Half-Life-related is about to be announced. And that is supposed to happen on Nov. 19—the 27th anniversary of Half-Life 1. Leakers, including folks at Insider Gaming, Tyler McVicker, and Gabe Follower, have all pointed out that Valve is cooking something related to its groundbreaking series, which is set to be announced in the coming weeks. Insider Gaming journalist Mike Straw cryptically posted on X that "It's happening soon enough. Just be ready," with Tyler McVicker, who was one of the first to uncover the existence of Half-Life: Alyx, asking him to "compare notes." Straw also said that Valve "isn't done with big announcements," after the Steam Machine reveal, indicating more is coming. McVicker is a long-time Valve leaker and data miner, and has been claiming that the company is making a new Half-Life game for a long while now. Titled HLX in the files, this could be HL3 or a spinoff much like Alyx was, but it's Half-Life nonetheless. [Hidden Content] GabeFollower, known for his tremendous datamining efforts and his early discovery of Deadlock, has also insisted that something Half-Life related is coming soon, and has also uncovered mentions of HLX numerous times in the files. A community theory, based on Steam's lack of a featured banner on the store page for about a month starting Nov. 18, suggests the company is preparing something huge to take its place. The Autumn ***** happened two months earlier, which Valve said was "intentional," seemingly to free up space in November. Nov. 19 is the 27th anniversary of HL1's release, while tomorrow, Nov. 16, is the 21st anniversary of HL2. These upcoming days are major dates in Half-Life history and the perfect time for a proper announcement. Now that we have the Steam Machine and Steam Frame coming, it could be that Valve is planning to release the game as a launch title for this new hardware. That's just my own assumption and theory because, as you could guess, I'm high as a kite on the hopium, because Half-Life 3 has to be my most anticipated title of all time. This is literally me. Image via Pirat Nation There has never been a more opportune moment for Half-Life 3's release than now. Valve has a new engine, new hardware, and a new chance to push the industry forward, much like its previous HL titles have. In fact, this time Valve has the greatest opportunity to revolutionize the industry again, so long as it plays its cards right. We are all a bit overhyped and ready to believe things when it comes to this game, but a lot of credible, reputable people are hinting at it, and everything proposed so far is too probable to just be a coincidence. Or, so I would hope. The post Half-Life 3 confirmed? Every insider is pointing at November 19 for the big day, and I’m also huffing hopium appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article

  7. Since Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7's full launch yesterday, my results in multiplayer have been very mixed, and that's for a couple of reasons. Treyarch's decision to finally tone down skill-based matchmaking has made the majority of matches feel more random and fun, so that's a good thing. But also, doing the same with aim assist for controller players has me feeling like I am garbage. Image via Activision The changes for BO7's launch are to what's called Rotational Aim Assist, which helps slow down and hone in on a target when the right analog stick is aiming towards an enemy. It's very, very noticeable, and a lot of players are not happy with the change. "Our goal with the adjustments is to create a more balanced and competitive experience for all players, regardless of input choice," the dev explained in the game's launch patch notes. "It is also important to us that these changes preserve the core feel of Call of Duty controller gameplay. When looking at engagements between similarly skilled controller and keyboard/mouse (KBM) players, we found that controller is slightly favored to win at close ranges and KBM is favored at long ranges." For BO6, Treyarch said it "updated Rotational Aim Assist strength at close range to scale over a short distance," but in BO7, "increasing the range before full Rotational Aim Assist strength is achieved." That's a whole lot of words for, "holy *****, I feel like I can't aim anymore." It's been a harrowing realization that I'm even worse of a player than I thought I was. And in the end, that's fine. But I can't imagine this change is going over too well with the droves of casual players who like to play multiplayer for fun and are now getting relentlessly gunned down as their extra shots are just totally missing. Aim assist is a slippery slope, because it's likely needed to level the field between controllers and KBM, especially in the age of crossplay. But it's difficult to find the right balance, because if it gets too strong, then it's a crutch. I am crutchless now, as are many others. [Hidden Content] But it's not just us lower-skilled gamers who are speaking out. Multiple time CoD world champion Shotzzy even recently said that the nerf feels "insane," and for someone as dedicated and successful in the grind of CoD to say that, it sure feels like maybe things got overtuned. Either that, or it's going to take a harsh ******* of adjustment. I'm thinking it's the latter, but I don't know if I have it in me. Treyarch said it was fielding feed back and "will be gathering more data to continue our push for a level and competitive playing field," and honestly, I would not be surprised to see this nerf reverted just a little bit. 8. Escape from Tarkov players are having to endure Error 213 on the opening night of update 1.0, and it can be a frustrating experience. If you're an old player, chances are that you have encountered this issue at least once during your previous sessions. Error 213 is strictly related to the server side of things and typically pops up when there's a server wipe. How to fix Error 213 in Escape from Tarkov When the Error 213 pops up, it simply means that the "auth server" has failed to verify your identity. This isn't much of your fault, as it happens when too many players are trying to log in at the same time after a server wipe, which happened earlier for the update. One simple trick is just to retry your connection. There's a chance that the server, despite being overcrowded, could let you in as you keep retrying from your end. However, there's no guarantee that it will work. If it does, there's no certainty about how many times you'll have to retry to get through. Ultimately, it's not a foolproof method, but it can work sometimes if you're desperate to play Escape from Tarkov and are getting Error 213. I haven't managed to find any alternate solution for this error on the Steam version of the game. One option is to wait until the initial rush is over. However, that's not much of a solution if you want to jump in as of writing. If you use the BSG launcher, an alternative is to update it to the latest version. You can try to reinstall the latest version and try logging in. Ultimately, we will have to wait for the server rush to die down. Once the login attempts are along expected lines, it will reduce the appearance of Error 213 on its own. 17. The 1000 Backend Error appears to be popping up for many Escape from Tarkov players on the opening launch of version 1.0, and it can be a massive problem. While it's slightly odd that this old error seems to have crept up into the new version of the game, it only goes to show that there are possible solutions already known about for you to try. Escape from Tarkov "1000 Backend Error" fix The 1000 Backend Error typically appears when you've started a new game. This applies to both PvP and PvE modes. The error typically appears once you have created your character and chosen your faction. Once you hit next after confirming your name, the error pops up. The error can also show up with the following description: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". Here's what you should do if you're getting the 1000 Backend Error. Completely close Escape from Tarkov.Restart the game, but don't create a character.Go to settings.Clear the cache, which should remove the previous instance of character creation.Restart the game. If you're not on Steam, you can clear the cache from the Escape from Tarkov client. The process is pretty much the same. This error typically pops up more following a wipe, so it's not an uncommon one to get. Hopefully, the steps I have mentioned will allow you to proceed normally with the character creation. The opening day has popped a fair number of errors so far, which include Code 418. This one is more closely related to the server performance, and there's not much you can do apart from a few basic steps. Hopefully, the problems will be fixed soon, and we will be able to start our respective adventures. The post How to solve “1000 Backend Error” in Escape from Tarkov appeared first on Destructoid. 18. Metroid Prime 4 will be the first game in the franchise on the Nintendo Switch 2, releasing on Dec. 4. While Metroid Prime 2 and 3 aren't on modern consoles for us to warm up for this first new series release in 18 years, an interesting story about these games was now shared by a former developer. Destructoid spoke with Kynan Pearson, level designer on Metroid Prime 2 and senior designer on Metroid Prime 3. After these games, he's worked with Discord as a creative director for seven years and is now actively in gaming development as a creative consultant for multiple titles. Scrapped Metroid mechanics might never see the light of day We asked Kynan about what could have been in the Metroid Prime series. More specifically, what game mechanics were created for previous games but ended up being removed from their final versions. "On Prime 3, there was some early exploration around expanding Morph Ball abilities," Kynan told Destructoid. "I worked on prototypes for a bunch of different abilities that never got used." Morph Ball is Samus' armor augmentation that allows her to turn into a small ball to roll through tight passages and tunnels to access rooms she can't otherwise. [Hidden Content] Kynan explained the scrapped Morph Ball abilities were essentially elemental traits. "You would have an ice ball with a frozen, icy shell that expanded the circumference of the ball. You could roll it along twin rails that, as it melted, you would eventually fall through," he explained. A Fireball was also removed from the final game, which would allow players to ignite the Morph Ball and burn other surfaces to unlock new areas. Another discarded augmentation, the Digital Ball, would let Samus project herself onto a monitor and have the player control her in a short, 2D side-scrolling segment, much like in the retro Metroid games. "The ball would get scanned, and then all of a sudden you would see it projected on a monitor, and you would roll the ball around through configurations, from wire to wire, and monitor to monitor," he said, comparing it to Tron, as if Samus suddenly entered a digital world parallel to the standard game universe. Several other ideas, like a transparent Glass Ball, might never be used again, Kynan said. "A couple of them were really, really cool, but just stuff that ultimately wasn't going to work out for various reasons," he explained. "They were just cool experiments that never made their way into the games." Metroid could go open world with more Samus transformations Metroid Prime 4 trailers teased a wide-open desert area that Samus will have to traverse using a motorcycle. This sparked discussions about whether the game could fit into an open-world logic, similar to Breath of the Wild. [Hidden Content] Kynan believes Metroid could support an open world perfectly. "It just takes [developers] a sense of understanding and an attention to detail to make sure that it still retains the elements of exploration, discovery, isolation, and ability expansion," he pointed out, breaking down how all these elements in an open-world Metroid game are possible in the same way as they work in Zelda. Extra Morph Ball transformations like the ones scrapped would be "just one of what I think are hundreds of options" to make the Metroid series open-ended. "It is actually just the format of gating what abilities you're able to gain at any time," Kynan said after saying the differences between Metroid and Zelda are "nuances in the formula." "[Metroid] is a hundred percent compatible [with open world] in the exact same way that Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are," he noted. Kynan even suggested you can literally palette swap Link in modern Zelda games with Samus, along with some characters here and there, to make a great open-world Metroidvania, if developers wanted to tackle this challenge. I want to play this Metroid game that doesn't exist yet I've forced myself to play Metroid Prime Remastered because I didn't have fun with it at first—but loved it in the end. However, while I listened to Kynan's ideas for making the Metroid series more open-ended, he outlined what I can only describe as the Metroid game I want on my Switch right now. "One of the things that I'd love to see expanded is Samus's transformations and unique and surprising ways that she could transform to use new and unique abilities to overcome obstacles and explore," he said, using Cappy's possession mechanic in Super Mario Odyssey as an example Metroid could follow. [Hidden Content] All of Kynan's ideas involve Samus taking a new form with a big upside attached to a limitation. "So if you transform into a Metroid, it gives you the ability to fly around, but every time you're using a Metroid, it can be frozen," he suggested. Other funny ideas would be letting Samus be like a centipede that can crawl up walls but is vulnerable to knockback, or letting her slow time but preventing her from running. As long as there were some limiting mechanisms, this would open up a world of multiple solutions to a single problem in Metroid. "You could allow it to be open-ended. You can just solve things in unique and creative ways based on whatever feels best for you," Kynan said. And Nintendo, in Kynan's opinion, is the perfect company to achieve such a challenging concept in Metroid. "Nintendo is a completely different beast in terms of game development philosophy," he pointed out, explaining how their games let players interact with the world through their mechanics in countless ways. "You can distill every experience down to that. You can have cinematic presentation and storylines that make you think that there's greater meaning behind the things that you're doing. But if your interactions aren't satisfying, then no other element can band-aid that and fix a lack of solid mechanics." 20. I and other members of the press were able to play Metroid Prime 4: Beyond at early preview events last week, and I had a great time with the game. I think Nintendo has another excellent first-party title to close out 2025, judging by what I played. But since the previews dropped yesterday, the discussion has been dominated not by Samus's new abilities or the game's gorgeous graphics on Switch 2, but of a new NPC named Myles Mackenzie. Take this IGN video, for example, where he's called "a potentially fatal flaw." [Hidden Content] In the demo we all played, Samus saves Myles from a predicament and he rewards her with the Missile upgrade. They then move together to the next area, while Myles yaps, and eventually he helps her advance in the story while acting as a companion for a short while. I agree that Myles could chill with the ********* gaming a little bit, and the fact that he ends up feeling like an ******* mission will not thrill many. But as a nerdy engineer sidekick for at least one level in the game, I think the annoyance with his presence and overall demeanor is being very overblown. In my notes from the event, I mentioned Myles as "nerdy" and "annoying," but I think that's kind of what they were going for, so at worst it's a bit cliche. I guess I'm in the ********* here, but I found Myles' dumb commentary to be a funny foil to Samus's stoic and quiet demeanor. He's running his mouth and being awkward while she just peers out from behind her visor, silently judging him the same way we are as players. Could it get annoying if it's overdone? Absolutely. But I'm not ready to pull that trigger yet. "Myles Mackenzie is an engineer with the Galactic Federation," his bio reads, spotted by Stephen Totilo. "His duties include the maintenance and repair of several vehicle types and programming software used for weapons development. He is known to be extremely talkative, even while alone. Although his restless energy and curiosity make him prone to danger, his excessive caution is enough to keep him from harm. He has a strong moral compass and work ethic, making him a reliable problem solver no matter the situation." Many seem to agree that Metroid games are about being in solitude and figuring things out on your own. I concur, and I think that if Myles or other NPCs continue to pop off on voice comms in Samus's headset throughout the entire game, then it could become a problem. But we legitimately only played the first hour or so of the game, so I'm not willing to jump off the hype train yet. Some in the comments of IGN's video are acting as though Metroid is ruined, and that this game is dead on arrival because of this one character. Seriously? We've waited this long for Metroid Prime 4 and it's over, just like that? Come on now. [Hidden Content] Nintendo confirmed yesterday that the other areas in Metroid Prime 4 will have other NPCs akin to Myles. Is the main issue that Myles is annoying and overbearing during the game's early tutorial missions, or that he's just there in general? If disliking any and all NPCs and remaining in silence with the heroine who barely speaks is what you're after, then yeah, I guess you may be in for some disappointment. My time with Metroid Prime 4 was marked with joy and discovery as I figured Samus's Psychic powers out, fought enemies, and took down two bosses in fights that were engaging and interesting. The game is gorgeous and the Metroid discovery feeling was still there, despite what the current discourse may suggest. It's disappointing to me that gamers are choosing instead to focus on this NPC who may or may not end up as a throwaway character once Samus makes her way to the next area, and not everything else in the demo. But if this character in a 20-minute stretch is enough to make you cancel your pre-order, then that is your prerogative. Judging off of my own experience, I'm still excited to play Metroid Prime 4 when it drops on Dec. 4. The post A lot of people are overreacting to Metroid Prime 4’s nerdy NPC, and I don’t really understand the fuss appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article
  21. Escape from Tarkov is finally available on Steam as part of the 1.0 update, but players have run into a landmine in the form of Error Code 418, which is popping up for many. Incidentally, Error Code 418 isn't a new error, and it has existed previously in the Escape from Tarkov fandom. Getting this error code will feel quite depressing if you're trying to play on the opening day. Thankfully, there are some steps you can take to ease the problems we are encountering on opening day. Escape from Tarkov Error Code 418 possible fixes The Error Code 418 will pop up every time you can't connect to the dedicated servers. This includes both PvP and PvE modes (requires separate DLCs). If you want to play Escape from Tarkov, connecting to the centralised servers is key. Having Error Code 418 pop up at your end will prevent you from doing so. The recent reason behind the error code has to do with the opening day player count. It appears that the developers might have underestimated the number of players trying to enjoy Escape from Tarkov on day one. While the developers have confirmed the issue, there's no ETA on when the server issues will cease to exist. Image via BSG As of writing, the incidence of getting the error has reduced compared to a few hours earlier. However, if you're still getting the error, here are some basic steps to complete. Retry, or completely restart the game from scratch. If you still get the error, repeat the process.Restart your router if the first technique doesn't help. You can also check the integrity of your installed files. If a key file is missing by any chance, Steam will automatically redownload it, which should fix the problem. Ideally, it's best to wait before trying to play Escape from Tarkov. The update came out a few hours ago with a fresh wipe. It's better to just wait before jumping in and continuing with your new character. Playing with the current server issues can be risky, as you might accidentally lose a lot of in-game progression.
