  6. No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games has hailed hitting a ‘very positive’ Steam user review user rating for the first time, eight years after the game’s controversial launch was slammed by players. Space sim No Man’s Sky launched in August 2016 on PS4 and PC to tens of thousands of negative reviews on Steam, with players complaining about broken promises and a lack of meaningful content, particularly on the multiplayer side. The game quickly settled on the dreaded ‘overwhelmingly negative’ Steam user review rating, a clear sign to anyone who visited its Steam page that something was very wrong. But Guildford, England-based Hello Games has continued to update No Man’s Sky over the years, improving player sentiment to the point where it is now considered superb. It took two years to hit ‘mixed,’ then another three to hit ‘mostly positive.’ At the time, five years after launch, Tim Woodley, Head of Publishing at Hello Games, explained how hard it was to claw back Steam user reviews from such a low base. "Over the last five years we've moved from 'overwhelmingly negative' to 'mostly positive,’ it's an incredible achievement for the team,” he said. “Moving to 'mixed', which may seem funny to celebrate, took two years of hard work. Moving from ‘mixed’ to ‘mostly positive’ has taken the last three years (knowing that any small mistake along the way may result in backlash and negative reviews). “In some ways, it's easy to dismiss Steam reviews, it's a bit of meme to share the silly ones, but as a developer, they are undeniably meaningful. For five years now if someone bought No Man's Sky they had to do it in spite of a red or yellow warning symbol beside our name (and affecting the likelihood algorithm in charge of displaying the name in the first place). “The team is really chuffed today at hitting this milestone but we also owe a huge thank you to the community, the players, but also folks like yourself who continue to support us to do this work we enjoy. "Each percentage point becomes exponentially ******* to earn as you move up the ratings. Moving from 20% positive to 21% positive may only require a few hundred positive reviews whereas moving from 69% to 70% needed 10,000 positive reviews. This is why it's so rare for games to change their All-Time rating and why we'd assumed that we might never be able to." Now, three years after that milestone, No Man’s Sky is on ‘very positive.’ Next stop, ‘overwhelmingly positive?’ [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] — Sean Murray (@NoMansSky) November 28, 2024 Hello Games chief Sean Murray, who had come under ***** upon Hello Games’ launch for failing to deliver on features he’d talked up in pre-release interviews, hailed the game’s new Steam user review rating. “Holy ***** you guys - it happened,” he tweeted. “ALL REVIEWS: Very Positive. Thank you Thank you Thank you. You have no idea what this means to us.” As Hello Games continues to work on No Man’s Sky, it’s developing its next game, Light No *****. It's about adventure, building, survival and exploration together, set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 7. A terminally-ill Borderlands fan recently visited developer Gearbox to play Borderlands 4 early after his story went viral. In October, 37-year-old Caleb McAlpine took to the Borderlands 3 subreddit to reveal his late stage four terminal ******* diagnosis after being given seven to 12 months left to live, or less than two years if chemotherapy slows the progression of the *******. Don’t know if this is possible byu/Cjmac87 inborderlands3 .reddit-embed-wrapper iframe { margin-left: 0 !important; } “So I am a **** hard Borderlands fan and don’t know if I will be around for Borderlands 4,” McAlpine said. “Is there anyone that knows how to get in touch with Gearbox to see if there is a way to play the game early? “Long shot but thought I would try. “Thanks for your help.” After McAlpine’s post went viral with over 19,000 upvotes on Reddit alone, Gearbox chief ****** Pitchford chimed in to say the studio would do everything it could “to make something happen.” Thankfully, last week McAlpine was able to visit Gearbox’s Texas headquarters to play Borderlands 4. “Caleb is cool - a legit gamer who knows Borderlands inside and out,” Pitchford tweeted. “I’m glad he got a chance to play. I am praying he makes to when we are done. Thanks, internet, for signal boosting Caleb’s story.” “We’re deeply thankful to the Borderlands community for rallying around Caleb after he shared his story several weeks ago,” Gearbox added. “His courage, strength, and determination are an inspiration to us all. Our team was honored to host him last week at our studio.” McAlpine himself returned to the Borderlands 3 subreddit to post pictures of his Gearbox visit and reveal what had happened. Just an update, Thank you everyone byu/Cjmac87 inborderlands3 .reddit-embed-wrapper iframe { margin-left: 0 !important; } “So Gearbox flew me and a friend down 1st class the 20th of this month and we got to tour the studio and meet an amazing bunch of people from some of the devs of all of the Borderlands games up to ****** the CEO,” McAlpine posted. “We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far and it was amazing. I don’t know if I will be around when the game comes out but I just want to say thank you to all of you for all of your love and support and for helping in making this happen. It truly was an amazing experience and it was just awesome. “We stayed at the Omni at the Star (the Dallas Cowboys headquarters) and the hotel wanted to do something nice as well and got us in on a VIP tour of the entire facility. Needless to say me being a Lions fan I got to talk a lot of ****** lol. “Thank you everyone.” Borderlands 4 is due out at some point in 2025. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. 14. A really cheap laptop with decent gaming specs is pretty hard to find these days, but this gaming laptop deal from Best Buy is certainly worth a look. With a $699.99 price tag, this Lenovo LOQ packs in an Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU, along with an AMD Ryzen CPU and 16GB of RAM, to give you a huge $300 saving on the original price. While this isn't the single best gaming laptop you can buy, this bargain Lenovo machine still has some decent chops for gamers. The main draw is certainly the Nvidia GPU, with the laptop version of the GeForce RTX 4060 having no trouble with most modern games, thanks in part to its support of DLSS 3 frame generatino that can bring a big boost in frame rate. 18. The genre of 'Action RPG' is supremely annoying to write about, because the term can mean different things to different people, but here’s how I see it: Diablo 4 and similar games, such as Path Of Exile, are 'ARPGs'. Which stands for 'Action RPG'. But Zelda games are 'Action RPGs', which is a totally different genre that you could, if you felt like it, also shorten to 'ARPG'. So, to summarise: ARPGs and ARPGs are two different things, and both are Action RPGs. Got it? Great. It’s because of this kerfuffle that I’m not exactly **** at Diablo boss Rod Ferguson recently suggesting that we just call games that are similar to Diablo 'Diablo-likes'. I just find it very funny that he’s the one saying it, in a bold faced act of admittedly very inconsequential linguistic colonialism that carries the unspoken connotation that something is "like the game I make, but a bit *****". The biggest cause for celebration is no doubt Manor Lords - once the most wishlisted game on all of Steam, with each subsequent update, the early-access version attracts more players and plaudits. But there's also Breachway, the sci-fi strategy game with flashes of FTL, Workers and Resources, which hit 1.0 this year, and the Command and Conquer-inflected (except with ants, rather than people) RTS Empires of the Undergrowth. 23. For me, Arcane Season 2 rates a solid eight out of ten. While Act 1 begins with a bang and ends with the high-stakes Jinx versus Vi moment we'd all been waiting for, Act 2 loses the momentum a little, and Act 3 feels rushed. My concern coming out of Episode 6 was that it felt like there wasn't enough time to wrap up all of Act 2's loose threads, and while Act 3 largely does so, it feels a little scattered. Rumors have swirled that the original cut of the finale clocked in at an hour and a half long, sparking disappointment as players consider, to borrow Sting's words, what could have been.
