  1. Upon starting Path of Exile 2, you are given a choice of selecting one of six classes that are now available. Ranger is one of them, but the amount of options available for this build can often be overwhelming. Grinding Gear Games outdid itself with PoE 2 by expanding the progression process of each class. During your journey, you will need to regularly select new active and passive skills, while also investing in specific Support Gems and items that boost your abilities and stats. There are dozens, if not hundreds of options in each of these areas, so picking the proper one is mind-boggling. View the full article

  3. Open that bottle of space champagne, the aliens have been wiped out. At least that's what the interstellar pilots of Elite Dangerous are celebrating in the galaxy-sized multiplayer space sim. Earlier this month, the Thargoid menace finally landed in the Sol system, putting earth itself under threat for the first time, not to mention other human homeworlds and colonies. This meant players were invited to drop everything and head for home - to embark on one last great stand against the final, desperate, and dangerous alien attacker: a Thargoid Titan called "Cocijo". Don't worry, they got him. Read more View the full article

  5. A Marvel Rivals fan recently took to social media with a video that shows players being caught by Jeff the Land Shark's ultimate ability outside of its animation. While some fans have complained about balancing among the various characters in Marvel Rivals, Jeff's ultimate seems to come up more often than others. It remains to be seen how NetEase Games will respond to such complaints, as the game has yet to receive any major balancing changes. View the full article
  6. The history of FPS games is also a history of collaborations and influences. Without Wolfenstein, you have no Doom. No Doom, no Half-Life. No Half-Life, no Counter-Strike, and so on. Whether it's FEAR or Far Cry, Deus Ex or Delta Force, the big-hit shooters all owe a debt of inspiration to one another. In that spirit, two of the best-reviewed FPS games on all of Steam have finally forged an official crossover. Available via a free update, this is, quite literally, Mullet Mad Jack meets Ultrakill. 7. A new leak has teased a potentially imminent announcement of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake, which would be fantastic news to kick-start gamers’ 2025. The alleged The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake has been circling the rumor mill for years, and confirmation of its existence was once discovered during Microsoft’s acquisition of Blizzard, but its projected 2022 release date never came to fruition. Another 2023 leak suggested an Unreal Engine 5 remake was in the works, but again, no official announcement followed. View the full article
  8. Frostpunk developers 11 bit studios have cancelled a new, console-oriented game in response to both "shifting market trends" - in particular, declining player enthusiasm for "narrative-driven, story-rich games" - and specific problems during development. 11. The Monster Hunter Wilds beta was a fantastic success, with hordes of players descending upon the sequel to Capcom's best-selling game of all time. The new RPG is an impressive beast, but it certainly wasn't without issues. Game director Yuya Tokuda has been listening to all the feedback on performance drops, polygonal monsters, and concerns around weapon balance and unsatisfying impacts, however. In a new community update, he's joined by community managers Joe and Jonno, and translator Patrick, to show off all the major changes that are being implemented. Read the rest of the story... 12. Path of Exile 2 is all about experimenting with different classes and builds, and the fast-paced Monk is one of the most versatile of those classes. There are six classes available in the early access version of Path of Exile 2 (with more to come at launch): Mercenary, Sorceress, Witch, Ranger, Warrior, and, of course, Monk. PoE 2's take on the Monk isn't too terribly different from any other fantasy game's: they mainly rely on their incredible speed and powerful melee attacks to deal damage, balanced out by their relatively low defense and maximum HP. In addition to the many winter items you can collect, there are also lots of special tasks you can complete like the gift-giving Ho! Ho! Ho! task. 17. After the recent announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign, some devout fans of the original Elden Ring's lore have likely been filled with a sense of uneasiness. Seeing the beloved franchise re-imagined as a fast-paced, speed-running cooperative multiplayer experience raises plenty of questions about whether theories surrounding longtime lore will remain viable, or if many will ultimately have to return to square one. Longtime FromSoftware fans also likely noticed The Nameless King from Dark Souls 3 had a cameo in the reveal trailer, raising questions about further connections to the Soulsborne universe and what can or should be considered canon. 20. At any given moment I am in the center of a wonderful vortex of skeletons. Bones splash and rattle and burst out of the ground in sharp, horrible spurs. My weakest skeletons, sensing their death coming, explode into fire and shards. My strongest skeletons fight so hard and with such alacrity that upon dying, they drag their spirits together and keep fighting as ghosts for a while. Foul little bone scorpions skitter around on fans of legs made from human hands. Somewhere in the middle, almost invisible among the noise, is the character I am actually playing: Path of Exile 2’s mean-spirited, callous, and gleefully enjoyable Witch. This is a review in progress. It has to be. Even in its incomplete early access *******, Path of Exile 2 is a great sprawling mass of a game. Three meaty acts of a planned six act campaign are followed by a trickier return tour through them, before the absurd endgame kicks into gear and the real work begins. If I came to you having played everything on offer I would be wild-haired, bloodshot-eyed and possessing perfect, incomprehensible knowledge. Let’s compromise: I have toured the dark caverns and the antediluvian crypts. I have been killed by various accumulated nasties. I’ve had a great time. Read more View the full article

  22. Image: FromSoftware Sony has announced that it has increased its holdings in Japanese media giant and FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa Corporation. Sony acquired the shares for 50 billion yen or roughly $300 million, bringing its total ownership to 10 percent and making it the Kadokawa’s largest shareholder. The news comes after earlier rumors that Sony was considering acquiring the company outright. Kadokawa confirmed that Sony had expressed interest in acquiring shares, but that, at the time, no decision had been made. An acquisition would have brought Kadokawa’s considerable holdings in Japanese movie, television, publishing, and video game production — which includes the Elden Ring developer and Danganronpa studio Spike Chunsoft — under Sony’s control. Getting its hands on more IP seems to be the name of Sony’s game with this announcement. According to the press release, Sony and Kadokawa will, “discuss specific initiatives for collaboration” regarding adaptation, development, and production of Kadokawa IP. Or to put it more simply, there’s now a not-small chance that an Elden Ring live-action movie might be on the way. View the full article

  24. An industry insider has claimed that Ubisoft is currently planning to release new Year 2 content updates for Skull and Bones, despite the incredibly low player count on some platforms. The long-awaited action-adventure game was finally released in February 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but given Skull and Bones' lackluster reception and Ubisoft's turbulent year, many were expecting new content updates to come to an end after its first year. 25. The announcement of The Witcher 4 with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Ciri as protagonist has attracted a bit of discussion. Some of the reaction is online toddlers waxing wroth about a video game having a (somewhat older!!!) woman as lead character, and especially, shock, a video game in a series that has hitherto starred a man. And some of it is people commenting more thoughtfully on whether Ciri genuinely makes for a suitable Witcher protagonist, given that she isn't the product of the typical Witcher genetic modification regime (which is heavily tailored towards men), and given that, without spoiling too much, she has gifts that make crumbly old Geralt's sword-and-sorcery skillset look rather paltry. Speaking to Eurogamer this week, game director Sebastian Kalemba and narrative director Philipp Weber responded to a few of these comments, and also shared a little about Ciri's situation at the start of the game.
