The various dinosaurs and other creatures in Ark: Survival Ascended can be converted into useful mounts for exploration and combat, but some are much harder to tame than others. The size and aggressiveness of a creature are only two small factors that could determine how hard it is to pacify. Some dinosaurs take a much longer time to tame, requiring you to complete tasks or hunt down specific items. View the full article

The key creatives behind Dead Space have revealed that earlier this year they tried to interest Electronic Arts in Dead Space 4, but the publisher took a pass. The 2008 game, developed by Visceral Games and directed by Glen Schofield, is an action-horror classic and inspired an excellent remake by Motive Studios released last year. It also spawned two Visceral-developed sequels, as well as The Callisto Protocol (a spiritual successor, also directed by Schofield)... Read more.View the full article

Between the new build of Project Zomboid, the freshly announced sequel for The Long Dark, and the continual success of, Rust, Valheim, and State of Decay, the survival genre is arguably stronger than ever right now. But The Forest is still The Forest. Ten years after it first fully emerged onto PC, Endnight's pioneering building-and-brutality sim is suddenly more popular on Steam than it's ever been, and although its current resurgence can be explained by a seriously generous discount, its decade-long popularity is the result of something much more special - there's one thing that keeps The Forest on top. Fallout London is the game that most impressed me this year. Developer Team Folon didn't just create an astounding mod, it also crafted an entirely original world for us to explore, and we got it for free. 2024 was another banner year for video games thanks to a slate of big releases, strong remakes, and surprising hits. But despite plenty of games that made a splash, IGN awarded only one new game a perfect score of 10, and some argue that it’s not even a ‘proper’ game. Which is it? You’ll have to read on to find out. Every year we go through our archive of reviews to look back at the highest reviewed games at IGN. This year, 27 games received a score of 9 or 10, and of that only one new game received a 10 (the other 10 was given to a re-review of a very popular game). This is a marked downturn from 2023 where 36 games received our highest review scores, including five games that received a 10. That certainly doesn’t mean 2024 was a worse year for gaming – far from it. But one thing that is apparent is that they were spaced out, unlike last year when the hits just seemed to keep on coming. In 2024, IGN didn’t give out a single 9 or 10 between the end of June and beginning of September, which helps explain why it felt a bit barren for games on the whole. Nevertheless, the year began with a literal deluge of great games before the noticeable summer pause. A Big Year for RPGs In the first three months of 2024 we saw several big RPGs drop, all of which scored a 9. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was first out of the gate and continued the story of Ichiban Kasuga, who finds himself stranded on the beaches of Hawaii. ***** followed it up with Persona 3 Reload, a full-blown remake of the beloved Atlus JRPG. Speaking of, Atlus would go on to release the newest Vanillaware game, Unicorn Overlord, a strategy RPG with the trademark gorgeous art the developer has come to be known for. The last big RPG release before the summer was of course Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the long-awaited second part of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake project. The sequel would be even ******* than the first, with a humongous open-world to explore with hundreds of hours of side quests to pursue, all while reliving the events of Final Fantasy 7. The next wave of RPGs didn’t hit until October, when Atlus released Metaphor: ReFantazio, its third RPG of the year and arguably the biggest. From the team that brought you the Persona series, Metaphor is a pure fantasy RPG that tackles a dramatic political fight for the throne, with plenty of analogs to our modern day. Elsewhere, BioWare also released its first RPG in what feels like forever with Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which picks up after the events of the beloved Dragon Age: Inquisition. Finally, Square Enix released another RPG remake with the gorgeous Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which reimagines the iconic JRPG in pixelated HD. Despite the gap between big releases, anyone who is a fan of 100-plus hour RPGs ate incredibly well this year. Heck, you’re likely still grinding on at least a few of these games. Sim City Another genre that had a standout year in 2024 were sims. While “simulators” is a broad category, there were some unique entries into the genre including Coffee Stain Studios’ factory simulator Satisfactory, where players set out to build a new factory on an alien planet. There was also Sons of the Forest, the sequel to the hit survival game from 2014 that’s ******* and meaner than the previous game. And of course, the year was capped off with the newest Microsoft Flight Simulator, which delivered even more realistic flight time goodness. Indies Get Their Year The third big trend from 2024 was the prominence of indie games in our list of best reviewed titles. The highly-anticipated sequel, Hades 2, entered early access and delivered on the promise of fighting through hell once more, while games like Animal Well, 1000xResist, and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes also won us over thanks to their imaginative gameplay and storytelling. All of these games received a 9, as well as numerous nominations in the IGN Awards. However, the breakout hit in the indie scene is undoubtedly Balatro, the roguelike poker game many players could not put down. After initially releasing on PC and consoles, Balatro is now also available on mobile, which is where I’ve been playing this twisted little roguelike. While the bones of Balatro will be familiar to anyone with a cursory knowledge of poker, the ingenious modifiers and ways players can hit higher scores makes the lizard brain light up in delight and deserves all the praise it’s received this year. There was one indie game we actually gave a 10 to this year – our re-review of Stardew Valley, the cozy farming sim that’s taken the world by storm. After numerous updates, additional features, and new gameplay mechanics, Stardew Valley looks completely different from the game it was when it first launched, but no less compelling. Almost nine years after it first launched, Stardew Valley is still going strong. And speaking of going strong… The Live-Service Train Keeps Going For many who stick with one game throughout the years, 2024 has delivered some great expansions. Destiny 2’s newest update, The Final Shape, is a worthwhile finale to Bungie’s long-running shooter, while World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, The War Within, kicks off a new start for Blizzard’s beloved MMORPG. Elsewhere, popular ongoing games like V Rising received a full release and scored a 9, and we re-reviewed Epic’s behemoth battle royale, Fortnite, which had a stellar year thanks to another fantastic collaboration with Marvel and the recent Chapter 2 Remix, featuring rap legends Snoop Dogg and Eminem. A new live-service entrant this year that also received a 9 is Infinity Nikki. The next game in the popular Nikki fashion series, Infinity Nikki takes the dress-up series and turns it into an open-world RPG, but with full focus on what the series is best known for: beautiful clothes and wonderful outfits. But the biggest surprise this year was Helldivers 2. Arrowhead Game Studios’ fun and hilarious shooter was the big breakout hit of the year, quickly enlisting millions of new recruits for its galactic space war. Even though it stumbled with some recent updates, it remains a massively popular game and PlayStation’s big live-service win of the year. Big Names, Big Review Scores 2024 was a good year for popular game series making big returns. Tekken 8 kicked off the year — literally — with its newest installment, which we called an “incredible evolution for the series” thanks to some interesting changes made to the classic 3D fighter that breathes new life into the classic combat. The same can be said of Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6, which delivers one of the best Call of Duty single-player campaigns in years thanks to its creativity and variety. This popcorn spy thriller, as we call it in our review, wonderfully marries the series’ love of bombastic, cinematic storytelling with all kinds of plot twists and turns that keeps players on the edge of their seat. The Life is Strange series also returned with Life is Strange: Double Exposure, which picks up with original franchise heroine Maxine Caulfield 10-years after the events of the first game. It’s a worthy follow-up to the slice-of-life mystery game that kicked off the series. For all you Sonic fans out there, the new updated Sonic x Shadow Generations re-release brings back one of the best modern Sonic games, but adds a healthy heaping of everyone’s favorite-but-evil hedgehog, Shadow. If that’s not enough, you can catch him in theaters this holiday when he’s set to appear in the newest Sonic movie. And if you’re looking for an all-star cast, PlayStation released the game with the biggest names in Astro Bot a brilliant platformer that matches the quality of anything its rivals at Nintendo put ou,t. There are hundreds of collectible characters from across PlayStation’s biggest franchises to discover, making it quite literally a game chock-full of big names. One big name that snuck in at the end of the year is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. MachineGames’ first game since finishing up its Wolfenstein reboots is another rollicking, nazi-punching adventure that brings the film hero to the AAA games era. It’s not only a big win for Indy fans, but for Xbox Games Studios that finally has a bonafide hit. Nintendo’s Quiet Year Nintendo had a much quieter year in 2024 and it didn’t have massive new releases like 2023’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, likely because it’s busy working on a successor to Switch. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t any hits from the Mario House this year. Rather than big blockbusters, Nintendo’s notable games were from unexpected series. The new Mario Party game, Super Mario Party Jamboree, received a 9 thanks to a return to basics approach of the beloved party game formula. And Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door received a full on remake for the Nintendo Switch, and an Editor’s Choice award to go with it. Nintendo did have one surprise this year, which is the first Zelda game that actually stars Princess Zelda. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom returns to the top-down Zelda world last seen in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, including using the same toy-like art style. But the Echoes puzzle mechanic, where Zelda can summon everyday objects she memorizes, leads to all kinds of delightful surprises. Think the freedom of Tears of the Kingdom mixed with the art style of Link’s Awakening and you’re on the right track The Big 10 Aside from Stardew Valley’s re-review, only one new game received a 10 from IGN this year, and it was none other than FromSoftware’s first Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. This new expansion not only adds an entire new area to The Lands Between to explore, but a suite of new weapons, armors, and even combat styles like martial arts, makes FromSoftware’s magnum opus even better. But it’s not just simply a beefy expansion with loads of content. The world of Elden Ring is rich with lore and the story Shadow of the Erdtree tells adds new layers to that rich text. The backstories for characters like Queen Marika and Miquella are both enlightening and tragic, and the sense of discovery players get when uncovering these secrets prove that nobody does world design quite like FromSoftware. This expansion is so big it practically feels like a sequel. While a DLC like this won’t be nominated for IGN’s Game of the Year shortlist (spoiler: it might Best DLC!)We understand how a monumental game like Shadow of the Erdtree can compete for gaming’s top prize. And that’s a look back at the best reviewed games of the year. For more from the IGN Awards, check out our full list of winners in all of our different award categories for the year. Space Marine 2 modders have once again answered players’ prayers by putting the axe from Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 episode into the game. The Secret Level Warhammer 40,000 episode, called And They Shall Know No Fear, is a sequel to Space Marine 2 and stars protagonist Titus as he battles alongside his brothers to defeat the forces of Tzeentch. But while Titus appears in the animation as he looks in Space Marine 2, the episode also features a weapon players have yet to see in-game. It sounds innocuous, but the action scene in which this mystery Power Axe is used steals the show. We see it wielded with brutal efficiency to tear apart cultists and Tzaangors. There’s even a super cool moment in which a Space Marine bashes the helm of the axe in order to shift it into the upright position in his glove. THIS is why I’m a fan of Warhammer 40k! Hats off to @PrimeVideo for producing Secret Level: And They Shall Know No Fear. Watch it here: [Hidden Content] I highly recommend giving the entire 19 min episode a watch. It’s immersive and awesome. It’s a happy grim dark ray of… [Hidden Content] — MiniWarGamer Dave (@MWGdave) December 10, 2024 After the release of Secret Level, Space Marine 2 fans let it be known that they wanted to see developer Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment add the axe to the game, expanding upon the arsenal of weapons already at their disposal. So far, neither has indicated plans to do so. Modders, as they so often do, have stepped into the breach. Astartes 2.0, from Space Marine 2 modder Warhammer Workshop, has just released a new update that adds the much-anticipated Power Axe, inspired by Secret Level, to the game, as well as the Chain-Axe and the Space King’s Hate Mace complete with its unique heraldry. (Space King is a fan-made Warhammer 40,000 parody.) Generally, the Astartes overhaul mod adds loads of new content, including lore-accurate Space Marine classes, reworked combat, and even new missions. Space Marine 2 has a thriving modding scene that makes a significant number of improvements and changes to the record-breaking third-person melee / shooter hybrid. IGN has reported on Space Marine 2’s modding scene a number of times, shining a light on everything from more in-depth customization to a fix for one of the game’s biggest problems. Officially, Space Marine 2 is now up to Patch 5, although Focus has already talked about what to expect from Patch 6 and 7, both due out in 2025. The Year 1 roadmap for Space Marine 2 includes new content up to Season 4, which is set to kick off at some point in 2025 (we're currently in Season 2). Space Marine 2 is set for long-term support, and dataminers have uncovered information on cosmetics set to hit the game up to Season 9. IGN has reported on the availability in-game of what looks like a Battle Barge expansion set to hit Space Marine 2 with Season 3. In September, Saber Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits told IGN how the breakout success of Space Marine 2 had “changed everything” for the company. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted the Space Marine chapter now all-but confirmed to get a cosmetic pack after the Dark Angels, too. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. A dedicated Baldur's Gate 3 fan has searched through thousands of lines of dialogue to discover which characters agree, and disagree, the most with each other. As reported by The Gamer, Reddit user Tarrasque-Named-John datamined the beloved Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game to calculate which characters — like Astarion, Karlach, Shadowheart, and the entire Baldur's Gate 3 party — have the most aligning morals. The fan used the Approving and Disapproving mechanic of Baldur's Gate 3 to do so. When the player character makes certain decisions, messages such as "Gale Approves" or "Halsin Disapproves" pop up, and Tarrasque-Named-John looked to see which characters approved and disapproved the same decisions the most. Minsc and Karlach agreed the most, aligning on 97% of all decisions. They're followed by a few pairs at 96%: Wyll and Halsin, Minsc and Halsin, Jaheira and Halsin, and Karlach and Halsin. [Dataviz] Which companions agree the most with EACH OTHER? byu/Tarrasque-Named-John inBaldursGate3 .reddit-embed-wrapper iframe { margin-left: 0 !important; } The opposite was revealed too, with Astarion and Wyll emerging as the most disagreeable pair with just 50% alignment. They're followed by Minthara and Halsin at 51%, and both Wyll and Minthara and Karlach and Astarion at 52% Tarrasque-Named-John also calculated who would become "best friends" by the end of Baldur's Gate 3, ignoring percentage and looking directly at the total number of times characters agreed with each other. Astarion's bestie would be Lae'zel, and Lae'zel's would be Astarion. Gale's would be Karlach, but Karlach's would be Wyll. Awkward. Wyll's bestie is therefore Karlach, as is Shadowheart's. Jaheria's is Wyll, Minsc's is Karlach, Minthara's is Astarion, and finally, Halsin's is Wyll. This data is true as of Patch 7, but developer Larian Studios may shake things up a touch with Patch 8, which is due sometime in 2025. Though it may not shake up the morals of each character too much, it is set to add 12 new subclasses to the game alongside loads more. Baldur's Gate 3 arrived in 2023 but, incredibly, is even more popular this year than last. This is due in large part to official mod support, which are even available on console and not just PC as standard. Players downloaded more than 50 million mods via the official mod support tool in less than two months, and this number doesn't include the thousands made unofficially. Mods released so far include one that adds real-time combat to the otherwise turn-based RPG and another that brought entire new maps to Faerûn, including the highly requested Avernus. In our 10/10 review of Baldur's Gate 3, IGN said: "With crunchy, tactical RPG combat, a memorable story with complex characters, highly polished cinematic presentation, and a world that always rewards exploration and creativity, Baldur's Gate 3 is the new high-water mark for CRPGs." Stalker 2 is a hit. Officially, it’s sold one million copies across PC and Xbox Series X and S, with many more playing on Game Pass. Reports coming out of Ukraine, where developer GSC Game World was originally based before Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country in 2022, indicate Stalker 2 is already profitable. There’s even talk of a Netflix series. But what does this success mean for GSC Game World itself and the future of Stalker 2? IGN interviewed GSC CEO Ievgen Grygorovych and creative director Maria Grygorovych at BAFTA in Piccadilly, London following a screening of War Game: The Making of Stalker 2, to ask if Stalker 2’s big sales were a game-changer for the developer. Discussing the impact of Stalker 2’s release in English, which is obviously not their first language, Ievgen and Maria talked about how the studio now faces “a new reality” and with it a ******* audience than it’s ever had to contend with. The first steps as part of this new reality will revolve around working to improve Stalker 2 itself, something GSC has already done with multiple patches, but also to expand its plans for continued support. “You need to think properly because we now have a really big audience and sometimes different parts of this audience want to see different things,” Maria cautioned. “So we need to live now with this new reality, with a live community and talking with them and try to understand them maybe deeper because we really want to make our relationship good.” Ievgen went into more detail, saying that while GSC’s plan for the development of future video games remains unchanged, it plans to invest even more in post-launch support of Stalker 2 than it had previously earmarked. “Around five years ago or maybe six years ago, we had a plan of what we were going to do in the nearest 10, 15 years,” he revealed. “What projects we want to do, how we're going to look like. And all these years we are slightly updating this plan by just moving the dates forward until we release the game. “And so six years passed and we still want to do the same games as we planned earlier and nothing changed. The only things that changed is that we didn't think that we would like to invest much more time in live updates of Stalker 2 after game release, that we would want to add much more things in this game in live updates.” What does this mean for Stalker 2 and its players, then? Ievgen confirmed that GSC is now in a position to add ideas it was forced to cut from the game before launch because they weren’t ready, and even add new ideas that have sprung up in the wake of Stalker 2’s release. “We didn't expect that we would go back to improving Stalker 2 for a lot,” Ievgen explained. “And now we still have the same plan for 10, 15 years of development of other things we want. But also putting much more in development of Stalker 2. “Because actually I love the world we built. I still find a lot of things that we can make better and we want to make better. And now we have players for whom we can do that, for whom we have to do that. And for me it's very driving.” Those same reports coming out of Ukraine suggest Stalker 2 will get at least two expansions and even multiplayer, which may be one of the ideas Ievgen was talking about. The hope, it seems, is that Stalker 2’s success could help put Ukraine on the game development map, as CD Projekt’s The Witcher 2 had done for Poland. In the shorter term, updates to fix issues with Stalker 2 continue, including a much-needed patch that improved the crucial A-Life 2.0 feature. Previously, GSC explained what went wrong with Stalker 2’s A-Life 2.0. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. Long-forgotten leaked characters for Genshin Impact have essentially been confirmed by developer HoYoverse, even if only subtly. ****** Myth: Wukong arrived in 2024 to incredible success and has seemingly spawned some copycats as a result, with Nintendo Switch fans laughing as Wukong Sun: ****** Legend hits the platform this week. Gamers online have called out the $7.99 Wukong Sun: ****** Legend as a fairly blatant rip-off of ****** Myth: Wukong, which isn't on Nintendo Switch itself. Not only is the name incredibly similar, but the promotional image could easily be mistaken for that of the actual game. The similarities practically end there, however, as Wukong Sun: ****** Legend is a side-scrolling platformer as opposed to ****** Myth: Wukong's third-person action. It also requires a meagre 338 megabytes of storage space according to the Nintendo eShop page. It's description doesn't allude to this seemingly more limited experience, promising "a chaotic world teeming with powerful monsters," "supercharged abilities and crazy fighting skills," and "captivating visuals with unforgettable storytelling." "Seriously, this is not even subtle," one ResetEra user wrote of the similarities between Wukong Sun: ****** Legend and ****** Myth: Wukong. "Not even trying," wrote another. "Yeah, this seems like the kind of shovelware cashgrab someone would release," said a third. ****** Myth: Wukong is based on classic ******** novel Journey to the West, so Wukong Sun: ****** Legend could technically also be based on this source material, but it's not the first time such an incident has occurred. A game which looked incredibly similar to PlayStation mega hit The Last of Us, for example, was also released on (and then pulled from) the Nintendo eShop last year. Fans have called out digital storefronts for seemingly have little to no quality control, with PlayStation itself facing a similar issue with a Grand Theft Auto 6 parody earlier in December. Developers have felt the burden of this too, with Unpacking creative director Wren Brier calling out Nintendo for allowing copycats of their game on the eShop. As reported by Eurogamer, Brier called games such as Unpacking: Deluxe Edition or Unpacking: Chill Music Pack "egregious scams," as they are in no way linked to their own game.
