Baldur's Gate 3 is full of interesting and complex characters, including a few that never even appear on-screen. One such character is Lenore DeHurst, a cleric of Mystra and resident of the arcane tower in the Underdark. Lenore affects several parts of the story in acts one and three but is only ever present in left-behind notes and the dialogue of other NPCs. View the full article
Marvel Rivals is one of many free-to-play games that have launched and been carried to massive success thanks to cosmetics, allowing anyone to play it without paying. Four out of five game developers are currently working on a project for the PC, a sizable increase from 66 percent of developers a year ago. That's according to Informa's latest State of the Game Industry survey, which partnered with Omdia to ask over 3,000 game industry professionals about their work in advance of March's Game Developers Conference. The 80 percent of developers working on PC projects in this year's survey is by far the highest mark for any platform dating back to at least 2018, when 60 percent of surveyed developers were working on a PC game. In the years since, the ratio of game developers working on the PC has hovered between 56 and 66 percent before this year's unexpected jump. The number of game developers saying they were interested in the PC as a platform also increased substantially, from 62 percent last year to 74 percent this year. While the PC has long been the most popular platform in this survey, the sudden jump in the last year was rather large. Credit: Kyle Orland / Informa The PC has long been the most popular platform for developers to work on in the annual State of the Game Industry survey, easily outpacing consoles and mobile platforms that generally see active work from anywhere between 12 to 36 percent of developer respondents, depending on the year. In its report, Informa notes this surge as a "passion for PC development explod[ing]" among developers, and mentions that while "PC has consistently been the platform of choice... this year saw its dominance increase even more." Back in December 2022, I wrote in our Dwarf Fortress review that its Steam release is "a worthy revision of the legendary settlement sim." And I stand by that. But there was something missing: The beloved Adventure Mode, which let Dwarf Fortress Classic players trade their mountainhome management for wandering the procedural world in traditional roguelike fashion—until some kind of ogre or colossus inevitably punched your skull in. Two years later—or almost a year after the mode became available in not-quite-complete beta form on Steam—the wait is finally over. The fully-fledged Adventure Mode dropped today, and it's waiting for you to grab your heroic destiny by its individual teeth... Read more.View the full article

Image: Cath Virginia / The Verge Though Nintendo can technically claim it had the first big gaming news event of the year, at least Xbox’s Developer Direct actually showed off some games and let us know when we can play them. The showcase was anchored by deep dives into the biggest games coming down the green pipe like Doom: The Dark Ages and Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight, with a couple of surprises to fill out the nearly one-hour-long runtime. Here are the highlights from the show. Ninja Gaiden 4https://www.youtube.com/embed/08vbgX9lpWY?rel=0 Xbox kicked off the Direct with the surprise reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4. The game is being codeveloped by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja and Bayonetta studio PlatinumGames. Ninja Gaiden 4 revives the series’ bloody, fast-paced combat and high-stakes (but often frustrating) platforming with a new face, the ninja Yakumo. Yakumo will use his unique fighting styles to defeat the Divine Dragon Order that’s turned Tokyo into a dystopian, crumbling mess. Gaiden’s former protagonist, Ryu Hayabusa, will also make an appearance as a playable character and Yakumo’s rival. Ninja Gaiden 4 will launch in the fall of this year, but if you don’t want to wait for your bloody ninja action, you don’t have to. Xbox stealth dropped Ninja Gaiden 2 ******, a remake of Ninja Gaiden II, and it’s available right now on Xbox and Game Pass. South of Midnighthttps://www.youtube.com/embed/klgw-To1rqc?rel=0 The developers at Compulsion Games went into detail about South of Midnight’s gameplay and story. You play as Hazel who must use her powers as a Weaver, fighting monsters and traversing the haunted landscape, to rescue her mother who gets swept away in a hurricane. With this, everything I’ve seen about South of Midnight makes it seem like it’ll be one of my games of the year. It’s got a ****** protagonist, features characters and tropes that harken to Southern gothic folklore, and its stop-motion art style makes it immediately stand out. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game when it releases on April 8th. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33https://www.youtube.com/embed/b6YNycptEzc?rel=0 Sandfall Interactive was founded in Montpellier, France, in 2020 with a team led by former Ubisoft developers. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the studio’s first game — a turn-based RPG with a compelling narrative hook. The world has been ravaged by a being known as the Paintress. Every year, she writes down a number, and everyone older than that number disappears. Expeditions are sent out to stop the Paintress, and the game will follow Expedition 33 in their attempt to save humanity. In addition to an interesting Persona 5-style take on turn-based combat, Expedition 33 features some serious voice acting talent, starring Charlie Cox, Jennifer English, Ben Starr, and Andy Serkis. Can’t wait to hear them perform when Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launches on April 24th. Doom: The Dark Ageshttps://www.youtube.com/embed/FGFuaVUI6_E?rel=0 To close out the Direct, Xbox gave us another look at Doom: The Dark Ages, the prequel to id Software’s 2016 Doom reboot and Doom Eternal. It will, of course, feature all the ripping and tearing a Doom enjoyer could want, along with an interesting focus on narrative — something the series isn’t really known for. But I suspect folks are far more interested in piloting a 30-story Doomguy-shaped mech suit when the game releases on May 15th. View the full article
Destiny 2 fans have been calling for the Palindrome to come back, and Bungie is finally delivering it—with one caveat. The weapon will come with the Arc element instead of Void, the developer said today. While the Palindrome’s return was anticipated in a not-so-cryptic teaser, the studio officially confirmed it in today’s This Week in Destiny blog post. Bungie also shared the new element and a list of perks the weapon can roll with when it comes back as a Nightfall weapon alongside the next Episode, Heresy, in February. View the full article

Just when I thought I couldn’t get more excited for stunning RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, new information revealed during today’s Xbox Developer Direct set my hype to new heights. When it was first revealed last year, I was instantly excited about the game. It’s a turn-based RPG with real-time battle mechanics, a stunning visual style, and star-studded voice cast that includes Charlie Cox, Jennifer English, Andy Serkis, and Ben Starr. But after today’s presentation, the 1990s Final Fantasy fan in me is so much more excited because Sandfall Interactive revealed that Expedition 33 will utilize a world map. No, not just a map of the world, but a fully explorable overworld that you can travel through and interact with to go from area to area. View the full article
