  4. FA Cup final: Should Dean Henderson have been sent off? FA Cup final: Should Dean Henderson have been sent off? Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson was at the centre of attention during Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City. The England goalkeeper superbly kept out Omar Marmoush’s penalty by diving full stretch to his right and made a stunning save to deny Jeremy Doku’s curling effort in the first half. But should the Palace number one have been on the pitch to make those vital interventions? City defender Josko Gvardiol played a long ball over the top for Erling Haaland to chase on to and Henderson hesitated, before stretching out a hand outside the box to divert the ball away from the City striker. As occurs with every decision, the video assistant referee (VAR) checked the incident and allowed play to continue without any sanction. The explanation given was: “The direction in which Erling Haaland was going made it possible, but not an obvious goal scoring opportunity.” Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney said on the BBC One coverage that it was “100% a red card” and called to “get rid of VAR”. 5. I just found out my fiancee has been hiding $82K in debt — and now she refuses to sign a prenup. What now? I just found out my fiancee has been hiding $82K in debt — and now she refuses to sign a prenup. What now? You’ve found the one. The love of your life. You’re planning a wedding, dreaming about your future and picturing a lifetime of shared memories. So, a prenup is not even in the picture. But then, a financial curveball is delivered. In the middle of cake tastings and venue tours, one man stumbled onto a discovery: his soon-to-be wife was carrying $82,000 in credit card debt. The curveball has him behind in the count. After years of building a stable financial foundation, he suddenly felt like it was the bottom of the ninth, with runners on base and the score tied. He was the last batter. Now with the wedding date fast approaching and his fiancée unwilling to sign a prenup, he’s left wondering whether love really is enough — or if this financial mismatch could upend everything they’ve worked toward. Prenups were once seen as a tool for wealthy grooms to protect themselves from a spouse’s financial habits. But that perception is slowly changing — at least for some. While only one in five married couples in the U.S. has a prenup, about half of American adults say they somewhat support the idea, according to a recent survey by Axios. Contrary to popular belief, prenups aren’t just for the rich. They also don’t have to protect only the wealthier partner. Instead, a prenup can serve as a financial safety net for both spouses before marriage. When done right, a prenup works like a financial planning tool. Couples can use it to clarify responsibilities, outline debt expectations, discuss potential inheritances and more. In this case, the fiancée’s refusal to sign a prenup is a red flag. Her $82,000 in credit card debt was a surprise — and it could have long-term consequences. Instead of viewing a prenup as divorce prep, couples can think of it as a way to protect both of their interests in the long term. For example, the prenup could lay out the plans for the fiancée’s responsibilities on addressing the extensive credit card debt, maybe with some support from her spouse. If she won’t discuss a prenup or set clear financial expectations before the wedding, it might be time to hit pause. It’s better to iron out these details before walking down the aisle. Story Continues Otherwise, shared debts could drag down their financial plans. Read more: You’re probably already overpaying for this 1 ‘must-have’ expense — and thanks to Trump’s tariffs, your monthly bill could soar even higher. Here’s how 2 minutes can protect your wallet right now While a prenup might not be romantic, it makes sense in certain situations, especially when there’s a financial imbalance. If one partner has significant savings and the other has major debt, a prenup is worth considering. Other good reasons to consider a prenup include if one partner plans to stop working, if either person owns a business, if either has kids from a previous relationship or if one partner brings substantial assets into the marriage. Even if it sounds like a good idea, talking about a prenup can be a tough topic to navigate with your partner. The topic is loaded with assumptions and stigma. When you bring it up with your fiancée, do it with care and an open mind. Instead of focusing on protecting your own assets, aim to protect both of your financial futures — even if you part ways. Start with a shared goal. Be sure to listen carefully to what your prospective spouse has in mind. If something matters to them, find a way to include it in the agreement. These conversations aren’t easy. That’s why it helps to start sharing financial information early and consider working with a professional to create a fair agreement that leaves both of you feeling comfortable. It does a good job of faithfully representing the Star Wars galaxy far far away and stays mostly true to the lore and established characters. There are tie-ins to several of the movies and shows such as Solo and The Empire Strikes Back. If you like Star Wars and you can overlook the subtle and unnecessary woke expressions, then you’ll likely enjoy the game. 8. James Forrest: Celtic’s man for all seasons becomes club’s most decorated player James Forrest: Celtic’s man for all seasons becomes club’s most decorated player When did this all begin? A few minutes from the end of a league game against Motherwell on a Saturday in May 2010 – 14 years and 361 days ago – Forrest got on the end of a flick-on from Marc-Antoine Fortune and planted a left-foot shot into John Ruddy’s net. For the 18-year-old, it was a debut to remember. Nine minutes, one goal. Looking back at the footage, what stands out is Forrest’s youth – he could be mistaken for a 12-year-old. There’s also the names of some of his bygone team-mates – Edson Braafheid, Zheng Zhi, Morten Rasmussen, Josh Thompson. Relics from another age. There’s something else about that scene that reminds you of how long Forrest has been on the road, though. The attendance at Celtic Park that day was 24,000. The first of Forrest’s 523 games and his 108 goals for the club played out in a stadium that wasn’t even half full. The club, as much as the player, have come a long way. There was no trophy in that season, 2009-10, Rangers having won their second title in a row not long before. There wasn’t even a cup final. Hearts put them out of the League Cup and Ross County the Scottish Cup. Celtic played 10 games in Europe and won two. Tony Mowbray lost his job along the way. Lennon was appointed manager in a bid to bring back the thunder. “Look at his career and it’s been so successful but there’s been tremendous lows as well,” says Lennon. “Missing out on big games through injury or not being selected. He’s had his lows but he’s just kept himself on an even keel. Nothing fazes him. “He’s not one to kick the doors in when he’s not in the team. Some players don’t accept that but he seems to be like, ‘OK, this is my role at the minute but when I’m called upon, I’ll be ready’. And he’s always ready. “And I still really enjoy watching him play. He’s still one of the most exciting players to watch when he’s in full flow. As the game has evolved, he’s evolved with it. He’s a sort of passing winger now, but still with a goal threat. “I don’t put him on a pedestal with Bobby Lennox or any of the Lisbon Lions but he’s definitely a man who has done great things in his own right.” At 33, soon to be 34, there’s still no sign of him being sated by all the success, which is probably the very characteristic that has put him in the history books. 9. I Asked ChatGPT How Much Money I’ll Need To Retire in 10 Years: Here’s What It Said I Asked ChatGPT How Much Money I’ll Need To Retire in 10 Years: Here’s What It Said Not everyone can afford a financial advisor, which can make it difficult to get precise information on how much money you need to retire. While ChatGPT can make mistakes, it’s often a good early resource to get basic information you can then fact check with a simple search online. Find Out: What $1 Million in Retirement Savings Looks Like in Monthly Spending Read Next: How Much Money Is Needed To Be Considered Middle Class in Every State? I decided to ask the AI how much money I would need to retire in 10 years and here is what it said. I started with a generic query, to see what kind of advice it would give without knowing anything about me or my finances, age and proximity to retirement. ChatGPT gave me a basic overview: Estimate your annual retirement expenses. After adding up everything from housing and food to entertainment and leisure, and adjusting for inflation, ChatGPT said that annual amount is your “target baseline.” Let’s say this is $60,000 per year. (Admittedly, this is a low annual figure for many people.) Multiply by your retirement years. ChatGPT recommended a safe estimate of 25 to 30 years in retirement. So, you’d take $60,000 and multiply it by 25 years = $1.5 million. Advertisement: High Yield Savings Offers Powered by Money.com – Yahoo may earn commission from the links above. Subtract other sources of income. If you have other income such as pensions, rental income, annuities and expect Social Security, ChatGPT said to subtract those from what you need to have saved. For example: If Social Security will pay $20,000/year, that’s $500,000 in lifetime benefits (25 years). Your new savings target: $1.5 million – $500,000 = $1 million Factor in inflation and health costs. ChatGPT recommended factoring in 2% to 3% annually for inflation, though with the way inflation has been going lately, you might need to account for more than that. Then, it suggested you increase your target savings by 20% to 30% for healthcare and unexpected costs. That would give you an adjusted goal of $1.2 million to $1.3 million. Check your current savings and investment growth. Using a compound interest calculator, ChatGPT recommended you figure out a trajectory of growth for your current savings. For example, if you’re saving $5,000/month at a 7% annual return = ~$870,000 in 10 years. If you already have $400,000 saved, total = ~$1.27 million Learn More: The Money You Need To Save Monthly To Retire Comfortably in Every State ChatGPT’s bottom line for the “generic me” to retire in 10 years in a nutshell was: Target savings: $1 million to 1.5 million, depending on lifestyle and location Monthly savings needed: $4,000-$6,000 if starting from scratch Growth strategy: Invest in a diversified portfolio (not just savings). Story Continues While a good baseline, this generic advice didn’t speak to my specific financial circumstances. While I don’t want to share too many personal details here, I will say that I’m turning 51 this year, so 10 years from now, at 61, would be a very early retirement for me. Though my husband and I have a two-income household, some retirement savings and may be able to pay off our mortgage within the next decade, we live in California, a state with one of the highest costs of living in the entire U.S. We also have one teenager about to head off to college and need to figure out how to finance that. I also have aging parents to consider. So I gave ChatGPT more personal details about me, including: Current age Current retirement savings Combined annual income with my husband Expected retirement expenses Social Security plans Length of mortgage Details about financing our son’s college ChatGPT recommended I use the 4% rule — where you withdraw only 4% of your retirement savings per year — and add that to my expected Social Security (assuming the fund will remain solvent by the time I draw from it). To do this, for my, admittedly low-balled target of what we would actually need, living in California, of around $80,000 per year, we would need at least twice as much in retirement savings as we have now. So that was sobering. But remember, this was for an early retirement! So, it’s possible we could get on track by my actual hopeful retirement age of 70. ChatGPT finished by giving me an action plan that could help me stay on track toward an early retirement goal. This included: Max out retirement contributions: These include 401(k) plans, IRAs and/or Roth IRAs. Use catch-up contributions: Because I’m over 50, I’m eligible to make lump-sum “catch-up” contributions to my tax advantaged retirement accounts, which could give me the benefit of compound interest and significant growth. Invest for growth: It recommended I stick to a diversified portfolio “with some equities” for long-term gains. Plan health coverage: It told me to keep budgeting for private insurance until I become Medicare-eligible at 65. Model a glide path: ChatGPT suggested I shift to “more conservative assets” as I near retirement such as high-quality bonds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) or treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS). Track spending closely: It suggested the obvious advice, that we track spending carefully, especially after mortgage payoff, to “keep lifestyle creep in check.” Build a bridge fund: ChatGPT then urged me to consider “a non-retirement investment account” such as a money market account to draw from between 60 and 67. ChatGPT deemed me to be in “very strong shape” to retire in 10 years if I stay consistent with savings and investing. It certainly gave me food for thought — while I wasn’t considering an early retirement, maybe that reality is more possible than I thought. 11. Trump says he will call Putin on Monday to discuss stopping Ukraine war Trump says he will call Putin on Monday to discuss stopping Ukraine war Donald Trump says he will be speaking to Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Monday about ending the war in Ukraine, saying the call at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) would be about “stopping the ‘bloodbath'”. In a post on Truth Social, the US president said he would then speak to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and leaders of some Nato countries. Russia and Ukraine were unable to reach any breakthrough when they held their first face-to-face talks in three years in Istanbul on Friday, although a prisoner swap was agreed. The US president had offered to attend the talks in Turkey if Putin would also go, but his Russian counterpart did not take up the offer. Trump’s comments come after he suggested on Thursday that progress on ending the war would only happen if he and Putin held face-to-face talks. “Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end,” Trump wrote on Saturday. Nato leaders have been calling for Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire in the conflict. Following the talks in Istanbul, Ukraine reiterated its call for a full and unconditional ceasefire. The head of the Russian delegation, Putin aide Vladimir Medinsky, said the Russian delegation was satisfied with the talks and ready to continue contact. Hours later, a Russian drone hit a passenger bus in the Sumy region, killing nine people – prompting Zelensky to demand stiffer sanctions on Moscow. He said the attack on the bus was “a deliberate killing of civilians”. Russia has not commented, but state media reported that forces had hit a “military staging area” in Sumy province. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Source link #Trump #call #Putin #Monday #discuss #stopping #Ukraine #war Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  12. Metacritic’s Worst Rated Game Publisher Can Make a Comeback With This Single-Player That’s on ***** in Steam Metacritic’s Worst Rated Game Publisher Can Make a Comeback With This Single-Player That’s on ***** in Steam No one wants to be called the worst. But someone’s got to wear the disgraced crown, and for 2024, Metacritic handed that honor to Fulqrum Publishing. In its 15th Annual Game Publisher Rankings, using nothing but critic reviews, the site declared Fulqrum the lowest-ranked publisher of the year. Yikes. But every horror story needs a twist, and in Fulqrum’s case, that twist may come in the form of their dark, atmospheric single-player title, Stygian: Outer Gods. Currently in Early Access and on ***** on Steam, this eerie Lovecraftian experience might just be the redemption arc the studio needs. Fulqrum Publishing: From rough rankings to rising potential With rankings out, it would be an understatement to say that Fulqrum had a bumpy 2024. With a modest average Metascore of 71.1 and only one “good” title by critic standards (Forgive Me Father 2 for PC, which got an 83 score), the publisher ended up dead last out of 37 eligible companies in the rankings. Other titles released under the publisher’s banner in 2024 didn’t fare much better. While none were considered outright “bad”, they failed to impress the critics overall. Games like Dread Templar and Supreme Ruler 2030 had promise, but failed to climb on the good side of critics and players. But now enters Stygian: Outer Gods, a standalone title set in the same universe as Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones. This new release takes players to the fog-choked, secret-laden town of Kingsport, just before the apocalyptic “****** Day.” Players take on a story-rich journey involving shipwrecks, occult investigations, and unraveling cosmic horrors. To survive in this ratched world, you need to craft much-needed remedies and battle grotesque monsters, to make critical choices that will shape the narrative. It’s safe to say, Stygian: Outer Gods is full of potential. Its detailed environments offer a haunting backdrop to a game where your mind is just as vulnerable as your health. It’s not just about fighting back. It’s about staying sane while doing so. A second chance in Metacritic’s harsh system Turns out, rock bottom has a foggy port town, and it’s worth exploring. | Image Credit: Misterial Games Getting onto Metacritic’s annual publisher list isn’t easy. The platform only includes publishers that release at least five distinct, critic-reviewed titles in a year. Fulqrum barely qualified in 2024 with five distinct titles, but that also means they’re in the game, even if they’re last. This matters because now all eyes are on Fulqrum and whether it can break free from that bottom rank. And based on early impressions, Stygian: Outer Gods may be the spark the publisher needs. The game has drawn attention from fans of the resurging Lovecraft horror genre, which has seen a bump in quality and popularity over the past few years. Sure, the game is in Early Access, and yes, it’s not fully complete. But what’s there already shows promise and passion. The developers have shared a roadmap, and if they deliver on it, the final version of the game could be something memorable. So if you’re craving a single-player horror RPG with depth, dread, and decision-making, now’s a great time to check out Stygian: Outer Gods. And while you’re at it, give feedback; the developers are listening, and your input could help shape what might be Fulqrum Publishing’s most important title yet. Italian Open: Jasmine Paolini beats Coco Gauff to end wait for home women’s singles winner Italian Open: Jasmine Paolini beats Coco Gauff to end wait for home women’s singles winner Jasmine Paolini produced a scintillating display as she blew away Coco Gauff in straight sets to end a 40-year wait for a home winner of the women’s singles at the Italian Open. Roared on by a partisan crowd at the Foro Italico in Rome, Paolini triumphed 6-4 6-2 against Gauff of the United States. Paolini, who was a surprise finalist at the French Open and Wimbledon last year, wrapped up victory on the clay in one hour and 29 minutes. The 29-year-old was the first Italian woman to win the tournament since Raffaella Reggi in 1985. Neither player was able to hold serve in the opening three games before Paolini’s nerves eventually settled as she took a 3-1 lead. That was the point at which Paolini upped the ante as she closed out the set in emphatic fashion. Paolini raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set with two early breaks before Gauff claimed a break back and then managed to hold her serve. However, Gauff was unable to wrestle momentum back her way as Paolini swaggered through the remainder of the set. Guaff saved one match point but at 40-30 Paolini, who was born in Bagni di Lucca in Tuscany, sealed victory with an unstoppable serve right down the middle of the court. Paolini’s victory will ensure she moves up a place to fourth in the world rankings next week. 16. ‘It’s a war zone.’ 14 dead amid devastation in Somerset & London after storms hit KY ‘It’s a war zone.’ 14 dead amid devastation in Somerset & London after storms hit KY Kentucky is waking Saturday to at least 14 deaths, collapsed buildings, flattened neighborhoods, smashed cars, thousands of power outages and door-to-door rescues after a violent wave of storms tore across the commonwealth for about six terrifying hours until early Saturday morning. “Kentucky, we’re starting today with the tough news that we lost 14 of our people to last night’s storms,” Gov. Andy Beshear posted on social media at 8:02 a.m. “But sadly, this number is expected to grow as we receive more information. “Please pray for all of our affected families.” Storms and a possible tornado hit the Sunshine Hills area of Laurel County early Saturday, May 17, 2025. At least 10 people died in Laurel and Pulaski counties. A storm system that took shape in southeastern Missouri west of Interstate 55 Friday afternoon gained power and leveled homes, businesses, airport hangars and at least one church as it roared into Kentucky near Paducah overnight Friday into the early hours of Saturday. It wreaked havoc before crossing I-75 about 80 miles south of Lexington and began to sputter around 1:15 a.m. before exiting to southwestern Virginia. “This community really needs prayers tonight,” Randall Weddle, the mayor of London, told WKYT-TV just before 2 a.m. Saturday. Weddle confirmed fatalities occurred when an apparent twister (if not two) roared out of the ****** sky, its shape silhouetted by lightning, and devastated communities in Laurel, Pulaski and parts of Clay counties. Homes were destroyed, he said, and debris was everywhere. “It’s pretty bad down here right now,” Weddle said before asking Kentuckians to “pray for those affected and (our) first responders.” Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, spokesman for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, told the Herald-Leader around 4 a.m. there were nine deaths confirmed in the county and that numerous other people were injured, some seriously. The concern was that authorities would find more fatalities after the sun rose and people began asked them to check on relatives. “It’s a war zone,” Acciardo said. Firefighters, police, rescue squad members and others worked through the night, often in heavy rain, searching for people killed and injured in the storm, Acciardo said. Authorities set up a station at South Laurel High School for people displaced by the storm — and first responders — to get warm, get food and receive first aid if needed. The sheriff’s office appealed for people to bring in food, first aid supplies, blankets and other supplies to the station. “We need help,” Acciardo said. It was the most deadly storm in the county since 2012, when a tornado killed six people. A Lutheran church and Baxter’s Coffee at U.S. 27 and Parkers Mill Road in Somerset was damaged after significant overnight storms on May 17, 2025. Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling told the Herald-Leader that all nine victims are adults and were residents of the Sunshine Hills subdivision in London. Damage also was reported in Somerset, especially in communities and the business district in the southern half of the city. Video and photos showed collapsed buildings and plenty of devastation. “The south side of the city was hardest hit,” said Mayor Alan Keck, to WKYT reporters. He asked city residents to “be patient and give grace” as crews work to clean the mess caused by the high-powered storm. In a Saturday morning interview with the Herald-Leader, Keck said fire officials told him at least one death has been reported in Pulaski County, outside of Somerset city limits. Early-morning crews have found significant damage in the city’s commercial district near the Somerset Mall and the KY 914 bypass. Among the businesses destroyer: A Lutheran church, a popular coffee shop called Baxter’s, a Speedway convenience store and a regional headquarters of South Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative. Most damage has been centered on Parkers Mill Road, Keck said. “If you weren’t in the direct path of the storm, you were fortunate,” the mayor said. Ann Cook, whose family operates the popular Baxter’s Coffee shops in Somerset, said it appeared the shop at US 27 and Parkers Mill Road will be a total loss. “At this point it doesn’t seem like much is salvageable,” Cook said as she stood in the parking lot of the wrecked business. The lost was littered with debris, including gas pumps from a Speedway station on the other side of four-lane US 27. But Cook and her mother, Terri Tuttle, said they plan to rebuild the store and were thankful the storm hit when the store was closed and no one was hurt. “It’s just stuff,” Tuttle said. While some of the Baxter’s Coffee family was looking at the damage to one store, Jay Tuttle, also a member of that family, delivered muffins and coffee to the emergency operations center from another Baxter’s store. On Saturday morning, police had blocked off a section of normally busy US 27 in the southern part of Somerset. Power lines and debris from damaged and destroyed buildings littered parking lots along the road. A Lutheran church was damaged at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Parkers Mill Road in Somerset after significant overnight storms May 17, 2025. The Kentucky State Police’s Post 11 made a plea around midnight for chainsaws to help firefighters and others remove fallen trees, indicating the storm’s wrath and the potential for rescuing trapped residents. “Somerset has taken it on the chin tonight,” said Chris Bailey, chief meteorologist at WKYT-TV, a reporting partner of the Herald-Leader. “When the sun comes up, it’s going to look like a very different place for a lot of folks,” added Jim Caldwell, a fellow WKYT meteorologist. Despite an afternoon and evening of warnings, Lexington and much of Central Kentucky dodged the storm system. Thunder rumbled and plenty of lightning lit the sky, but the storms locally did not match what much of Kentucky experienced. That included: Hail the size of golf ****** was reported in some parts of the state. Other places saw hail the size of baseballs. Thousands of lightning strikes were reported across the commonwealth. The National Weather Service in Paducah said multiple tornado damage surveys were planned this weekend and early next week in Kentucky, Missouri and southern Illinois. Warnings were issued across much of Southern Kentucky for potential flash floods. Some photos and videos showed a ******, funnel shaped cloud back-lit against the sky. For a time, all of Kentucky was under a tornado watch Friday night. . In Somerset and Pulaski County Saturday morning, officials flew a drone to capture the path of the unconfirmed twister. Doug Baker, former chief of Somerset-Pulaski County Special Response Team who is still affiliated with the team, said it appeared the tornado ripped through about three miles of property in the county. It came within a quarter-mile of an apartment complex in Somerset, he said. “This would have been totally different” had it hit that apartment complex off the KY 914 bypass, Baker said. “We felt we were lucky here.” Emergency crews from across Central and Eastern Kentucky started arriving in Somerset last night, Baker said. Immediately Saturday morning, two people trapped in Pulaski County home were freed. One suffered a broken leg and both were taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. Pulaski County Sheriff Bobby Jones said there was damage in the west end of the county, in the Nancy area, in Somerset and in the eastern end of the county and the Mount Victory area. The tornado crossed the county east to west and then on to Laurel County. Jones said he has only heard of one death and has not received any reports of people missing, but there are still places that police and others haven’t been able to reach because of blocked roads. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed” that authorities won’t find more deaths and injuries, Jones said. Central and Eastern Kentucky — along with portions of Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana — were under a tornado watch until 3 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service said tornadoes, scattered large hail and widespread wind gusts of up to 80 mph were likely. “Everything we feared is trying to come together now,” WKYT’s Bailey said on-air just after 10 p.m. He said he had been tracking one particular super cell thunderstorm for five or six hours as it roared across Missouri and made its way all the way to Somerset and London. A flash flood warning was also issued for that area until 4:15 a.m. Tornado and thunderstorm warnings were issued in some portions of western Kentucky by early evening as the storms moved closer to Central Kentucky. The National Weather Service in Paducah issued a tornado warning until 8:30 p.m. CST for parts of Daviess and Henderson counties, stating “this is a life threatening situation. Seek shelter now!” A round of storms that rolled through earlier in the day brought scattered reports of hail and wind damage. Part of the roof of a commercial building that housed several retail shops was blown off in London, said Bryan Johnson, public relations director for the city. As of early Friday evening, Whitley Street in London was still closed as crews worked to clear dow Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency ahead of the storms Friday afternoon. In a 7:19 a.m. social media post Saturday, the governor called for prayers. “Kentucky we are waking up to the news of multiple fatalities from last night’s storms. Please pray for those impacted. 18. Trump warns Walmart against raising prices, tells company to “eat the tariffs” Trump warns Walmart against raising prices, tells company to “eat the tariffs” President Trump ripped into Walmart, saying on social media Saturday that the retail giant should “eat the tariffs” instead of blaming the duties on imported goods imposed by his administration for its increased prices. Walmart on Thursday warned that everything from bananas to children’s car seats could increase in price despite the softer tariffs on China. “We can control what we can control,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on the company’s first quarter earnings call Thursday. “Even at the reduced levels, the higher tariffs will result in higher prices,” he added. The price hikes are expected to go into effect later this month. As Mr. Trump has jacked up import taxes, he has tried to assure a skeptical public that foreign producers would pay for those taxes and that retailers and automakers would absorb the additional expenses. In a Truth Social post on Sunday, the president lashed out at Walmart – which employs some 1.6 million people in the United States – and said the company should sacrifice its profits for the sake of his economic agenda. Mr. Trump says his economic plan will eventually lead to more domestic jobs in manufacturing. “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” Trump posted. “Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, “EAT THE TARIFFS,” and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” A spokesperson for Walmart told CBS News on Saturday that it has always worked to keep prices as low as possible and “we won’t stop.” “We’ll keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can given the reality of small retail margins,” the spokesperson said. The threat by the Republican president reflected the increasingly awkward series of choices that many major American companies face as a result of his tariffs, from deteriorating sales to the possibility of incurring Mr. Trump’s wrath. Mr. Trump has similarly warned domestic automakers not to raise their prices, even though outside analyses say his tariffs would raise production costs. In April, McMillon was among the retail executives who met with Mr. Trump at the White House to discuss tariffs and potential negative outcomes. But the Trump administration went forward despite warnings and has attacked other companies, such as Amazon and Apple, that are struggling with the disruptions to their supply chains. Walmart chief financial officer John David Rainey said he thinks $350 car seats made in China will soon cost an additional $100, a 29% price increase. “We’re wired to keep prices low, but there’s a limit to what we can bear, or any retailer for that matter,” he told The Associated Press on Thursday after the company reported strong first-quarter sales. Many U.S. companies have either slashed or pulled their full-year expectations in the wake of tariffs, as consumers curtail spending. The administration recently ratcheted down its 145% tariffs on China to 30% for a 90-day *******. Trump has placed tariffs as high as 25% on Mexico and Canada due to ******** immigration and drug trafficking, harming the relationship with America’s two largest trading partners. There is a universal baseline tariff of 10% for most countries as Trump promises to reach trade deals in the coming weeks, all while insisting he intends to preserve the tariffs as a revenue source. The framework agreement with the United Kingdom would largely keep the 10% tariff rate in place. Trump has also placed import taxes on autos, steel and aluminum and plans to do so on pharmaceutical drugs, among other products. 19. My wife and I paid off my stepdaughter’s $415K mortgage in exchange for her house, but it’s now worth $310K. Should we sue? My wife and I paid off my stepdaughter’s $415K mortgage in exchange for her house, but it’s now worth $310K. Should we sue? “We are left with a home worth $310,000 — not $415,000.” (Photo subject is a model.) – Getty Images/iStockphoto My wife decided to agree to purchase a home from her daughter, my stepdaughter. As her daughter is family, a simple agreement was drawn up, not an actual real-estate contract to purchase. The agreement was for us to make periodic payments, large payments, while her daughter paid off the mortgage on the house. In the agreement, there were four homes in her daughter’s rental portfolio that were named as collateral. There were no terms in the agreement pertaining to a prepayment penalty on the loan she took on the property, and nothing noted in regard to force majeure even though the home was in Florida and within one mile of the water. In September 2024, the home was devastated by Hurricane Helene. We had already given $375,000 towards the purchase price of $415,000. There was one $40,000 payment left, due in January 2026. As we never took title to the home, we asked for the price to be reduced, based on the condition of the home following the storm, or to reimburse us for our full investment. In response, my stepdaughter said she wanted to continue with the agreement as written. She told us we owned the home based on the agreement, even though we felt the agreement was in breach since all four of the collateral homes were sold without giving us notice. She also never made any attempt to revise the agreement and add any new collateral. We were told that we would be responsible for the loss in value, plus a repayment penalty of more than $10,000. The ***** was not enough to pay off the remaining mortgage, nor the significant prepayment penalty. She took our final $40,000. payment not due for another 13 months, to satisfy the full pay-off due. We were now into the agreement for the full $415,000. We are 71 and 67 and can’t afford this kind of loss in retirement. She refuses to repay the remaining money until January 2026 since that was the term in the original agreement, and will not pay any interest on the remaining amount she has agreed to pay. We are left with a home worth $310,000 — not $415,000. We never took the title because she had a mortgage that she could not afford to pay off. The agreement says she would pay off her loan and deed the property to us. Now that it has been flooded, it is no longer worth $415,000. She also is charging us the prepayment penalty she incurred on the loan when she bought the house prior to our involvement. Since we never had the title, and she owned the home at the time of the hurricane and subsequent flood damage, we don’t feel we should be obligated to complete the ***** and asked for a full refund of the money we had given towards the agreement. In addition to the flood damage, she sold the homes documented as collateral in the original agreement. Short of suing our daughter, is there anything we can do? Stepfather Related: ‘I’m flabbergasted’: My friend wants to borrow $5,800 to save his home from foreclosure. What should I do? You all bear the responsibility for this unfortunate mess. – MarketWatch illustration Loopholes in a contract can benefit both parties. My sympathy lies with you, your wife and your stepdaughter. If you agreed to pay $415,000 you should stick to that agreement. Or split the difference. As the legal owner, your stepdaughter should foot the bill for the prepayment penalty. Insisting that you pay the penalty is gaming the system. After all, the home does not belong to you until she decides to sign it over, assuming she does sign it over. Overall, this arrangement has left you open to legal and financial jeopardy. As agreements go, it’s a hot mess. You all bear the responsibility for this unfortunate mess. You and your wife were getting a house, which you were either going to sell for a profit, rent out or live in, while your stepdaughter received a large cash sum to move on to pastures new. In every letter of legal woes, there is nearly always a casual throwaway line — “As her daughter is family, a simple agreement was drawn up, not an actual real-estate contract to purchase” — that stands out like a sore thumb. By your own admission, you all failed in your duty to write an airtight contract that includes provisions for what happens if the house falls into negative equity or somebody breaches the terms of the agreement. If these four properties, which were supposed to be used as collateral, are sold, does that force the ***** of your stepdaughter’s house? If the house is destroyed or damaged by bad weather, does your stepdaughter have a duty to repair the property? Only a lawyer, having reviewed the agreement with your stepdaughter, could give you a final answer on the validity of your agreement. However, in Florida, under the doctrine of equitable title, you and your wife — as the buyers — would gain an equitable interest in the property, even while your stepdaughter holds the deed. For that reason, Alexander Stratigos, a tax attorney based in St. Petersburg, Florida, strongly advises you against taking a legal case against your stepdaughter. “Suppose a new valuable development went into the area and increased the value from $415,000 to $515,000 during the time the stepparents were paying off the mortgage. The doctrine of equitable title ensures that the appreciation remains with the purchaser with equitable title,” Stratigos says. If the shoe were on the other food, in other words, you would benefit. You might feel, in such circumstances, the same as your stepdaughter now feels about being asked to absorb losses that, in all likelihood, belong to you and your wife. A force majeure clause, as you are probably aware, details what happens if an “act of God” prevents either party from fulfilling their contractual obligations. As this was not a bona fide real-estate contract to purchase this house, too much may have been left to chance. A solid agreement to purchase this property would include the parameters that would invoke a force majeure clause and outline what steps should be taken if such “unforeseen” events impacted your contract. Force majeure is not always clearly defined, says Lakewood Ranch, Fla.-based Battaglia Law. “This can lead to disputes between the parties if an event occurs that frustrates or prevents one side’s performance, and the other party is not in agreement with the other party’s non-performance. If this occurs, it is foreseeable that litigation will ensue, in which a court must determine whether a party’s non-performance was excused under the contractual terms.” Standard contracts that abide by the rules of the Florida Association of Realtors and the Florida Bar do, however, define force majeure. They, according to Battaglia Law, include “hurricanes, floods, extreme weather, earthquakes, fires, or other acts of God; unusual transportation delays; wars, insurrections, civil unrest, or acts of terrorism; governmental actions and mandates, government shut downs; and/or epidemics and pandemics.” If the house had increased in value by $100,000 would you insist on paying more? Or would your stepdaughter pay off the loan, and sell the house, pocketing the $100,000? The problem is your stepdaughter is abiding by the main terms of the contract. As you say: “The agreement says she would pay off her loan and deed the property to us.” It makes no mention of what would happen if the value rose or fell by the time that happened. If you take legal action, you are far from guaranteed a ruling in your favor. Related: My wife asked for a divorce after 21 years. 20. ‘Nintendo’s Worst Nightmare’ Open World Game Gets Massive 25% Discount on Steam ‘Nintendo’s Worst Nightmare’ Open World Game Gets Massive 25% Discount on Steam Palworld is undoubtedly one of the more ‘controversial’ games to have landed last year. This creature-collecting game takes a ton of inspiration from the Pokémon series of video games, and blends with it survival elements to create an interesting, but addictive formula. For the uninitiated, Palworld was released almost one and a half years ago, on January 19, 2024, for both PC and console. Now, it would appear that Steam is offering a respectable 25% discount on the game, as part of its ‘Steam Creature Collector Fest’ campaign. Pocketpair’s Palworld is available at only $22.49 on Steam Steam has recently unveiled its Creature Collector Fest, a server-wide event which offers discounts on a variety of creature-themed titles. All sorts of games are included within this *****, ranging from the World of Final Fantasy, Cult of the Lamb, to Palworld. Palworld is on ***** right now | Image Credits: Pocketpair All games share a common theme – capturing and taming fantastical creatures and partaking in epic battles with them. Palworld is arguably the most popular entry within this list, part of which has to do with the recent controversy it found itself in. For those who don’t already know, the game draws in some heavy inspiration from Pokémon, and features ‘Pals’ which can be traded, collected, and put to work, helping you survive against the brutal game world. It is particularly this likeness for which the game was (often unfairly) criticized, which ultimately culminated in an intervention and lawsuit from Nintendo against Pocketpair. Pocketpair ultimately decided not to engage in legal battles with Nintendo, resulting in certain mechanics being drastically changed within the game. Despite this setback, Palworld managed to garner an impressive player base within a few short weeks of its launch. Palworld grew extremely popular quickly | Image Credits: Pocketpair Feeling the heat from the competition, Nintendo unfortunately managed to sink a sizable hole in the ship of their worst nightmare, and gaming is likely never to remain the same. However, Palworld has a strong chance at revival, more so when we take into account its massive 25% discount. The game is being sold at $22.49 and includes a complete collection of all the content released thus far. The ***** is only valid till May 19, so it might be a good idea to make haste and grab the game at your earliest. Palworld will return to its original price of $29.99 once May 20 arrives. Palworld borrows elements from Pokémon, but is a very different game altogether It is no secret that many of Palworld’s Pal designs (and game mechanics) seem like a blatant rip-off of the Pokémon series of video games. This had generated a lot of controversy back in January 2024, but many of these can be excused as creative interpretations. After all, it is in no way an exact 1:1 copy of Pokémon. First off, the game is an open-world survival crafting title, and has many mechanics that are a staple of the genre. Furthermore, its use of guns and gratuitous amounts of violence is not exactly something that is a staple of the Pokémon series either. Palworld is an early access title as well, and is set to receive updates over time, which is not something Pokémon games are built around either. There are way too many differences to point out within this list, but Palworld is most certainly not a Pokémon clone in any shape or form. During the flight from Frankfurt to Seville, Spain, on Feb. 17, 2024, the co-pilot of an Airbus A321 fainted while the captain was in the restroom, dpa reported, referring to a report by the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAIAC. The aircraft, which was carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, flew for around 10 minutes without a pilot in command of the plane, according to the report. Lufthansa told dpa that it was aware of the investigation report and that its own flight safety department had also conducted an investigation. The company didn’t disclose its results, dpa said. Although the unconscious co-pilot apparently operated controls unintentionally, the aircraft was able to continue flying in a stable manner thanks to the active autopilot. During this time *******, the voice recorder recorded strange noises in the cockpit that were consistent with an acute health emergency, dpa reported. The captain initially tried entering the regular door opening code, which triggers a buzzer in the cockpit so that the co-pilot can open the door. He did so five times without being able to enter the cockpit. A stewardess tried to contact the co-pilot using the onboard telephone. Finally, the captain typed in an emergency code that would have allowed him to open the door on his own. However, shortly before the door would have opened automatically, the co-pilot opened it from the inside despite being ill, dpa reported.
