As Trump has jacked up import taxes, he has tried to assure a skeptical public that foreign producers would pay for those taxes and that retailers and automakers would absorb the additional expenses. Most economic analyses are deeply skeptical of those claims and have warned that the trade penalties would worsen inflation. Walmart warned on Thursday that everything from bananas to children’s car seats could increase in price. Trump, in his Truth Social post, lashed out at the retailer, which employs 1.6 million people in the United States. He said the company, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, should sacrifice its profits for the sake of his economic agenda that he says will eventually lead to more domestic jobs in manufacturing. “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” Trump posted. “Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, “EAT THE TARIFFS,” and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” The posting by the Republican president reflected the increasingly awkward series of choices that many major American companies face as a result of his tariffs, from deteriorating sales to the possibility of incurring Trump’s wrath. Trump has similarly warned domestic automakers to not raise their prices, even though outside analyses say his tariffs would raise production costs. So far, those tariffs have darkened the mood of an otherwise resilient U.S. economy. The preliminary reading of the University of Michigan survey of consumer sentiment on Friday slipped to its second lowest measure on record, with roughly 75% of respondents “spontaneously” mentioning tariffs as they largely expected inflation to accelerate. In April, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon was among the retail executives who met with Trump at the White House to discuss tariffs. But the Trump administration went forward despite warnings and has attacked other companies such as Amazon and Apple that are struggling with the disruptions to their supply chains. Walmart chief financial officer John David Rainey said he thinks $350 car seats made in China will soon cost an additional $100, a 29% price increase. “We’re wired to keep prices low, but there’s a limit to what we can bear, or any retailer for that matter,” he told The Associated Press on Thursday after the company reported strong first-quarter sales. The administration recently ratcheted down its 145% tariffs on China to 30% for a 90-day *******. Trump has placed tariffs as high as 25% on Mexico and Canada due to ******** immigration and drug trafficking, harming the relationship with America’s two largest trading partners. There is a universal baseline tariff of 10% on most countries as Trump promises to reach trade deals in the coming weeks after having shocked the financial markets in early April by charging higher import taxes based on trade deficits with other countries. Trump insists he intends to preserve the tariffs as a revenue source and that a framework agreement with the United Kingdom would largely keep the 10% tariff rate in place. Trump has also placed import taxes on autos, steel and aluminum and plans to do so on pharmaceutical drugs, among other products. The tariffs and Trump’s own reversals on how much he should charge have generated uncertainty across the U.S. economy, such that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has held the central bank’s benchmark rates steady until there is more clarity. Powell has warned that tariffs can both hurt growth and raise prices. On Saturday, Trump repeated his calls for Powell to cut the benchmark rates. The cyber-attack, which happened in April, has caused millions of pounds of lost sales for M&S and left it struggling to get services back to normal, with online orders paused for more than three weeks. The supermarket declined to comment on the nature of the breach or these new details, saying “availability is now in a much more normal place with stores well stocked this weekend”. DragonForce – the name the criminals are using – previously told the BBC it was behind the attack and was also responsible for hacking the Co-op and an attempted hack on Harrods. M&S will announce its annual results on Wednesday, but the focus will all be on the devastating attack and its financial impact. Bank of America analysts believe M&S has lost more than £40m of sales every week since the incident began over the Easter bank holiday weekend. It announced on 25 April it had stopped taking online orders. Some stores were left with empty food shelves after the firm had to take some food-related systems offline. On a precautionary basis, M&S decided to close down many of its IT operations following the attack, effectively locking itself out its core systems as it grappled to deal with the attack. The biggest challenge is getting its online system fully operational again, which accounts for around a third of its clothing and homeware sales. M&S told the BBC: “Our stores have remained open and availability is now in a much more normal place with stores well stocked this weekend.” The retailer said on 13 May that some personal customer data was stolen in the cyber attack, which could include names, date of birth, phone numbers, home addresses, email addresses, household information, and online order histories. It added that any card information taken would not be useable as it does not hold full card payment details on its systems. The Co-op, which the hackers previously told the BBC they had targeted, said on 30 April that it had shut down parts of its IT systems in response to the attack. The hack caused payment problems and widespread shortages of goods in shops, and customer and staff data was compromised. It said on Wednesday that customers should see stocks return to more normal levels on Saturday and Sunday. It’s not As the Supreme Court prepared to hear arguments Thursday on whether to allow President Donald Trump’s restrictions on birthright citizenship to take effect, he falsely claimed on Truth Social that the United States is the only country that offers such a right. Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 20, the first day of his second term, that would deny citizenship to children who are born to people who are living in the U.S. illegally or temporarily. It has been put on nationwide holds by lower court orders. The administration is now appealing, on an emergency basis, the authority of individual judges to issue these rulings, known as nationwide, or universal, injunctions. The constitutionality of the executive order itself is not yet before the court. Here’s a closer look at the facts. TRUMP, discussing birthright citizenship in a Truth Social post: “The United States of America is the only Country in the World that does this, for what reason, nobody knows.” THE FACTS: This is not true. About 30 countries, including the U.S., offer unconditional birthright citizenship, according to the CIA World Factbook and the Library of Congress. Birthright citizenship was enshrined in the Constitution after the Civil War to ensure that formerly enslaved people would be citizens. “The statement is pretty obviously wrong,” said Ilya Somin, a professor of law at George Mason University who is an expert on constitutional law and migration rights. “Many countries have birthright citizenship, though in some of them the rules are different from those in the US.” Birthright citizenship is a principle known as jus soli or “right of the soil.” It bases citizenship on a person being born within a country’s territory. In contrast, the principle of jus sanguinis or “right of blood” determines citizenship based on the citizenship of one’s parents or other ancestors. Citizenship is granted to anyone born in the U.S., regardless of the parents’ immigration status. Only children of diplomats, who have allegiance to another government, and of enemies present in the U.S. during hostile occupation do not qualify. Those born to parents of sovereign Native American tribes were also excluded until the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. Most countries with unconditional birthright citizenship, among them Canada and Mexico, are concentrated in the Americas. The rest are in Africa and Asia. Some countries offer citizenship to those born in their territory to noncitizen parents only under certain conditions, such as the legal status of their parents or the age of the person applying for citizenship based on place of birth. The first sentence of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, often referred to as the Citizenship Clause, guarantees birthright citizenship. It states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” This clause effectively overturned the notorious Dred Scott decision of 1857, in which the Supreme Court held that ****** people, no matter whether or not they were enslaved, were not citizens. It was ratified, along with the rest of the 14th Amendment, in 1868 after it was passed by the Senate in 1866. The Civil War ended in 1865. Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship conflicts with a Supreme Court decision from 1898 that held that the Citizenship Clause made citizens of all children born on U.S. soil with narrow exceptions that are not at issue in the case currently before the court. While his old home was certainly more modest than his new property, it has one huge thing going for it: a 2.65% mortgage rate. “My mom used to always say, ‘Once you sell something, you can’t get it back,’” Chris says. While many homebuyers sell their first property when moving onto their next, Chris was reluctant to part with such a stellar mortgage rate. “It’s a gem I want to hang on to,” he explains. So rather than selling, he decided to rent it out instead. “It’s challenging to have two mortgages, but I think it’s worth it,” he says. Chris L. rented out his old townhome rather than selling it. (Chris L.) Why renting versus selling makes sense today Mortgage rates are driving the trend. Chris’ decision to rent it out rather than selling it makes a lot of sense in today’s housing market, where mortgage rates now hover around 6%. Homeowners who, like him, were lucky enough to snag the record-low interest rates of 2021–22 are hanging on to these properties and filling them with tenants instead. “Among repeat homebuyers in 2023, 2% reported renting out their home to others,” says Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com®. An additional 8% reported not planning to sell, without specifying what they’d do with the property. Taken together, that could mean that 1 in 10 homebuyers is holding on to the real estate they already own—and could become a whole new generation of de facto landlords. Real estate agents have also noticed an uptick in homebuyers renting out their previous properties. “I know a couple who inherited a property with a low-interest mortgage,” says Mike Rhoads, president of Wild North Home Offers in Raleigh, NC. “Instead of selling it to us, they decided to renovate it and turn it into a rental property. The rent they receive brings in extra cash flow each month.” In some cases, this scenario can give birth to a whole new career. “One couple I know of began renting versus selling because doing so provided them with a steady stream of income,” says Mike Wall, a real estate agent with eXp Realty/EZ Sell Homebuyers in Dayton, OH. “They have since acquired more rental properties, leveraging low interest rates to build a profitable real estate portfolio.” Another development that’s encouraging homeowners to rent out versus sell is the array of websites that cater to mom-and-pop landlords such as Avail, where individuals like Chris can easily post rental listings and screen applicants. “I did two weeks of showings with around 20 to 30 people showing up per day,” Chris recalls. After checking their credit scores and narrowing it down to four to five applicants, he offered the apartment to a tenant who moved in in February. How do the dollars stack up? Chris and his partner bought their new larger home for $1.35 million with a mortgage at a fixed interest rate of 7.5%, which costs them around $7,000 per month. Meanwhile, Chris’ townhome brings in $3,200 a month in rent, which more than covers the property’s outstanding monthly mortgage payment of $1,670—with plenty left over to help cover the costs of their new house. (Getty Images) Many homebuyers sell their original digs because they need that cash as a down payment on their next property. However, provided you don’t have to sell to buy, the advantages of renting out are considerable. Passive income Investment properties bring in passive income, which you can put toward a new property or other purposes. You will also continue to build equity in your original property, which is a nice plus for your net worth. Equity building “The major difference between [today’s] 7% borrowing costs and [previous] mortgage costs—nearly two-thirds of which are under 4%—creates an incentive to try to hold on to existing debt, if it is possible,” says Hale. Low interest debt on an appreciating asset, like a home, can act as a form of forced savings. Every month, the portion of your mortgage payment that goes towards your principal balance becomes equity in your home (the portion of your property that you own outright, and don’t need to repay to the bank if you sell). Over time, that property also becomes more valuable, as it benefits from appreciation. With a low interest rate, more of your monthly payment ends up back in your pocket as equity, acting as a powerful wealth builder. High rents Mortgage interest rates are not the only reason renting out rather than selling is on the rise. “The fact that rents remain high due to a decades-long ******* of underbuilding has also contributed to this phenomenon,” says Hale. When rentals are in high demand and rents are high, these accidental landlords can reap major gains. But if rents tumble or a rental sits vacant, selling the home, even with its low mortgage, might be the better option. Flexibility If you’re relocating, holding on to your old home also allows you to test the waters of a new neighborhood without giving up the old in case you want the option to return. “Returning to the same area can often be more expensive versus keeping the property and letting it pay for itself with a renter while you are away,” says Cara Ameer, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker, licensed in California and Florida. The risks of renting out your old home Homeowners who are considering renting out their old place should also weigh whether they’re up for the substantial responsibility of becoming a landlord. Tenant troubles Ameer lists a few of the responsibilities: Do you know how to properly screen tenants? Do you know the legalities of what you can and cannot do with today’s landlord-tenant laws? How will you handle the legalities of a tenant who is late paying rent or doesn’t pay at all—or, for that matter, the classic call about a broken dishwasher or a clogged toilet at 3 a.m.? These factors can eat up a sizable chunk of time and potentially add to your stress levels. Additional costs Also, remember it’s not just a matter of covering your mortgage on the home you are renting out. Real estate taxes and insurance are additional costs, as well as maintenance and repairs. “Many homeowners don’t understand the tenant isn’t going to treat the house the same as you would,” says Nathaniel Hovsepian, owner of The Expert Home Buyers in Augusta, GA. “You need to factor in more maintenance and upkeep over time.” Consider hiring a competent property manager to check on the house and handle repairs that crop up. That’s another expense eating into your rental profits, but it might be vital. You could be on the hook to pay back both the mortgage and these tax breaks in full if you’re caught renting out your home, which I have seen happen.” Similarly, if your property is part of an homeowners association, you might be running afoul of its no-renting regulations, so double-check those guidelines. Otherwise, your cash cow could wind up costing you. As for concerns about the hassles of finding a reliable renter and maintaining his previous property, so far Chris has found the process of running a rental fairly easy. “So far she’s good about paying rent on time and is no trouble,” he says. “If being a landlord turned into a headache, I might sell later, but who knows. Fritzchens ******, a renowned hardware enthusiast known for capturing incredibly detailed and high-resolution die shots of CPUs, dissected a Lunar Lake sample, offering us a look at its internals and Intel’s meticulous engineering. Developing Lunar Lake required Intel to walk a strategic tightrope between cost and a good product. The result is extremely similar to that of Arm-based alternatives from Qualcomm while efficiently trading blows with Apple Silicon. Innovation isn’t free, however, as Lunar Lake-powered laptops still hover in the four-figure territory. Even ex-CEO Pat Gelsinger characterized Lunar Lake as “a one-off” design, which explains why Intel’s leaked roadmaps do not mention a successor. Despite sharing the same core microarchitectures and process node as Arrow Lake, Intel took a completely different development approach with Lunar Lake. The TSMC N3B fabbed Compute Tile hosts four Lion Cove-based Performance (P) cores, sharing 12MB of L3 cache, with 2.5MB of private L2 cache per P-core. As opposed to Arrow Lake, the Skymont-based efficiency core cluster (E) doesn’t share the same L3 cache pool, but sits on a “Low Power Island” with its own dedicated L2 cache (4MB). Next to E-cores is the NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which is believed to have six NCE (Neural Compute Engines) for almost 48 TOPS of AI performance. You may like The Compute Tile is also home to a Battlemage-based integrated GPU with up to eight Xe2-LPG cores and the Media Engine. Intel has essentially packed all key processing elements on one chiplet, significantly reducing inter-die communication’s latency and power consumption. Intel also includes an 8MB System-Level-Cache (SLC) cache next to the memory controller, similar to Arm SoCs, which is shared between CPU cores, the integrated GPU, the NPU, and Media Engines. To further tighten integration and reduce latency, the memory physical layer is located directly on top of the Compute Tile, just below the two on-package, soldered, and non-upgradeable LPDDR5x-8533 ICs (16GB or 32GB) that function as the SoC’s main memory. Beneath the Compute Tile is the Platform Controller Tile based on TSMC’s N6 process and a ****** tile for structural rigidity. The Platform Controller Tile can be considered the I/O Extender Tile with Arrow Lake, even though Intel internally referred to it as Lunar Lake’s SoC Tile, based on leaks. This chiplet packs key HSIO and LSIO components, such as USB, Thunderbolt, and PCIe 4.0/5.0 interfaces, as well as Bluetooth and Wi-FI connectivity. All these chiplets are hosted atop a 22FFL-based active interposer, connected via Intel’s Foveros 3D packaging technology. These are just the chip’s overall specifications; the precise arrangement varies, as it’s impossible to know how Intel has laid out all these components without help from an engineer. It somersaulted and landed upside down, before righting itself upon landing. The Japanese was uninjured and able to walk away from the ******. Tsunoda was not the only driver to hit the barriers, as Alpine debutant Franco Colapinto also spun into the barriers, this time at the Tamburello chicane. Colapinto’s was a less dramatic accident, as he lost control on the exit kerb and spun across the grass before going nose-first into the barrier. The Argentine was also unhurt. The pole fight always looked to be between the McLarens and Verstappen, and the Red Bull driver laid down the gauntlet with the fastest time on the first runs in final qualifying. Piastri ran first on the final runs, and was looking good after the first two sectors, only to come across a run of about five cars preparing their laps as he reached the two Rivazza left-handers that end the lap. He could not improve his time in that sector of the lap but the first two sectors had been enough to vault him ahead of Verstappen. The Dutchman did improve on his final lap, but only by 0.07secs and he just fell short of pole. Norris, third fastest on his first run, was unable to improve and was leapfrogged by Russell, who used the medium tyres on his final lap, echoing the wider use of mediums by Aston Martin through the session. Piastri said: “Very tough session with the red flags and also the tyres. Today the C6 (compound, the soft) was a real mystery. “The team did a nice job getting the car into a good place. The last lap was good, I had about four cars in the last corner which didn’t help but it was enough.” Verstappen said: “Everything was going really well, just the softest compound, it is very difficult to keep them alive around the lap. Sector one was good and then the tyres fell away from me. George set his time on a medium. The soft was maybe a bit too soft for this track.” Norris said: “I guess I just wasn’t quick enough. None of my performances in Q3 have been strong enough this year, so same thing.” Pirelli brought the three softest tyres of their range to this race in the hope of preventing the race being the locked-in one-stop strategy it has traditionally been at Imola. That looks unlikely to work, with the medium compound working well, and Aston Martin leaned into it throughout qualifying. The Aston Martin has a major upgrade on it this weekend, with a new floor and engine cover influenced by design legend Adrian Newey, who joined the team as managing technical partner in March. Alonso and Stroll clearly had a strategy to use the mediums, as they turned to them for their final runs in each session. Even though the team had no brand new mediums to use in the top 10 shootout, Alonso vaulted up from the seventh place he had secured with soft tyres on his first run to an excellent fifth on his second.
