Portugal PM’s party wins snap election but falls short of majority
Portugal’s governing right-of-centre Democratic Alliance has won snap parliamentary elections – the third in as many years – again falling short of a majority.
Its leader Luís Montenegro promised supporters to “stimulate investment” and to “guarantee prosperity and social justice”.
Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos announced his resignation after his party finished in second, and lost so many seats it ended up neck-and-neck with far-right Chega – a relatively newcomer.
The Socialists could even slip behind Chega if results from voters abroad, which take a few days to come in, mirror those in last year’s election, when two out of the four seats went to Chega, and one to the Socialists.
Chega leader André Ventura said the “historic” result marked the end of two-party dominance in Portugal.
His campaign had focussed on the issues of immigration and corruption, and Chega was probably helped by the fact that this election and the previous one were both triggered by scandals involving the prime minister of the day.
Montenegro, in his remarks to supporters, thanked both his family and the “political family” that defended him from attacks relating to deals done by a company he set up before he became party leader, and which is now owned by his sons.
This was the controversy that triggered the election, after the government lost a vote of confidence.
Meanwhile, Santos, in his own parting comments, reiterated his view that Montenegro was not fit to be prime minister, suggesting that the Socialist Party should not let the matter drop.

Farmers sued to get their climate data back, and won. What can we learn?
The Trump administration is attacking climate science – from scrubbing data farmers use for their crops to cutting personnel from the National Weather Service. They are dismantling the best tools we have for mitigating climate change. “Climate change is not just a public health issue, it’s not just about forest fires or drought,” says Fmr. Washington Governor Jay Inslee. “It’s about economics… This is going to cost Americans’ bottom line.” Whether you are a farmer trying to protect your crops, a parent trying to protect your child from air or water pollution, a homeowner trying to keep your home safe from flood or fire… the only hope we have to protect ourselves starts with understanding the threats we face.

Water voles are almost extinct in Wales
Water voles are almost extinct in Wales
Getty Images
Conservationists say numbers of water voles have declined by 90% in the past 30 years
Endangered water voles in Wales are being fed edible glitter in a bid to save them from extinction.
Once commonly found across south Wales, water voles are now effectively extinct in all but a few locations, according to the Wildlife Trust.
With their future hanging in the balance, conservationists have been looking for new ways to track the naturally shy individuals in the wild – which is where the glitter comes in.
Nature Conservation Cymru hopes that by offering the animals something sparkly to eat, the sparkle should come out the other end – providing some much-needed answers.
Rob Parry, chief executive of Nature Conservation Cymru, said his team had consulted with vets to ensure the edible and biodegradable glitter – the type used to decorate cakes – would not be harmful to the semi-aquatic creatures.
“It’s something that we’ve done in nature conservation before for other species, for badgers in particular where we use pellets to put in with peanuts, which badgers love,” said Mr Parry.
“So we’ve taken that idea and scaled it down to water vole size, which means using glitter.”
Water voles are being fed edible glitter in the hope that conservationists can track their movements
The hope is that if the water voles are willing to consume the glitter then it will come out in their ****, allowing the small mammals – which are often mistaken for brown rats – to be tracked by conservationists.
Different colours of glitter could be used to allow conservationists to track different families of water voles and how far they range.
It might sound like a fun idea, but Mr Parry and his team could not be more serious.
If they can track where water voles are located in the wild, they can make adjustments to the environment – like removing invasive conifers from wetland habitats or fencing off certain riverbanks to stop sheep grazing.
Measures like this could help the species to disperse through the landscape undisturbed and potentially be a life-saving intervention.
“We’ll be able to see the types of territory, the size and where they go in,” said Mr Parry.
“Are they just using the linear features, the ditches, or are they spreading out into the bog and the molinia grassland habitat?
“That will be really crucial for when it comes to planning for our upland habitats.”
BBC News
The edible glitter is the same as the type used on cakes
The team is first testing out their theory on some captive-bred water voles which are part of a wider Natural Resources Wales (NRW) project to reintroduce colonies into the wild.
The glitter is spread onto chunks of apple, not part of their normal diet in the wild, but a food the animals love and do well on in captivity, according to Richard Davies from NRW.
“They get everything they need from apples, carrots, and some dried rabbit food as well,” he said.
He has successfully bred hundreds of water voles which have been reintroduced into the wild, though he said their release was no guarantee of survival.
“Most predators in the *** would quite happily take a water vole. They need to be able to cope with this heavy predation and replace themselves a lot,” he said.
Rob Parry says humans have made water voles endangered, and believes it is up to us to help them
With a BBC News camera present, the glittery purple apple was placed on top of the straw bedding which covered the water voles’ pen.
After 20 minutes, the food remained untouched, but an hour later most of it had disappeared.
The success of the project, however, does not just depend on the appetite of the water voles, but how well the glitter can retain its shine from end to end.
Mr Parry said without interventions like this, the future for water voles was uncertain.
“It’s been a perfect storm of bad things that’s happened to water voles in the last few decades,” he said.
“We have drained an awful lot of their wetland habitat, forced them into linear ditches where we find them now, and then the biggest problem is the American mink, an invasive species that was let out and released from pens and they just turned out to be the perfect water vole predators. The water voles don’t stand a chance, really.”
But now, at least, he is more hopeful.
The water voles, known for being nervous about any changes to to their environment, had not rejected the glitter.
So, did the experiment work?
Just 24 hours later, a tiny glittery **** was spotted.
The conservation team was elated.

Inside a council under cyber-attack
Inside a council under cyber-attack
BBC England InvestigationsBBC
A virus hidden in an email attachment spread though Redcar and Cleveland’s computer network
In the early hours an IT engineer raced into work through the dark, wintery streets of Redcar in north-east England.
The dash was prompted by a worrying alert about the council’s computer network, and he was soon hurriedly shutting down servers to try to halt the spread of a virus. It was too late.
Hackers had scrambled Redcar and Cleveland Council’s IT systems and would soon demand payment to restore it.
The cyber-attack in February 2020 caused chaos, disrupting everything from bin collections to social services and decisions about how to keep vulnerable children safe.
“I got a phone call to say: we’ve been hit,” recalls Mary Lanigan, then leader of the council. “The destruction of our systems was total.”
In recent weeks, cyber-criminals have targeted major retailers including M&S and the Co-Op, leading to empty shelves and breaches of customer data.
But the former head of the National Cyber Safety Centre (NCSC), Ciaran Martin, said his “biggest cyber-security worry” was the threat of simultaneous attacks on public services, like councils and hospitals, which had the potential to “wreck lives”.
The BBC has been investigating how the attack on Redcar and Cleveland unfolded, what it took to get things back to normal and the impact on local people.
Mary Lanigan said the impact of the cyber-attack had been “devastating”
In the days before Saturday 8 February 2020, an email with a seemingly innocuous attachment arrived in a council inbox. Hidden inside was a piece of malicious software that would lie dormant in the council’s network until it was activated remotely.
Within a few hours of that activation it had spread throughout the computer system, locking staff out and scrambling files.
By 11:00 GMT on Saturday, local residents began to notice the council website was offline.
“There wasn’t a lot we could do,” Mrs Lanigan said about efforts to stop the virus.
“You had to be practical, so it was actually getting more phones in there so that people could ring us.”
News was spreading, but Mrs Lanigan, who lost her position in the 2023 local elections, claims she received pressure from council officials and central government not to speak out.
The council declined to be interviewed about the attack but said there had been no pressure or instruction not to speak publicly, either at the time or since.
What Mrs Lanigan did not say in 2020, but admits now, was the council was dealing with a crisis.
“It was devastating,” she said. “Devastating for us, for the staff, for the public and for everybody else.”
They had lost the ability to share information with police and the NHS, while social services and elderly care services were knocked out, she said.
“Even somebody ringing up and saying ‘my bin hasn’t been emptied’ wasn’t dealt with.”
By the morning of Monday 10 February IT staff were desperately going from desk to desk, placing infected computers in a growing pile.
“When we saw how much damage had been caused we realised it would probably take weeks, maybe years to do,” said IT worker Ben Saunders.
At the same time, experts at the NCSC – part of GCHQ – were considering the council’s plea for help.
Mr Martin, who was the NCSC’s chief executive at the time, said it was “unusually serious”.
“If a council are telling you they are worried about their ability to run services for vulnerable children, you take that very seriously.”
It was feared social workers, tasked with keeping young people safe, would struggle to do their jobs without access to the online records they relied on to help inform difficult decisions.
In what Mr Martin called an “unusual” step, NCSC officers were deployed to Redcar.
On Tuesday 11 February – the second working day after the attack – hackers made their ransom demand.
The exact figure has never been made public, but Mr Martin said that, based on similar attacks, it was likely to have been in the “low single figure millions of US dollars”.
The current government is considering a ban on the public sector paying ransoms to hackers but, while it is the guidance, there was no formal ban in place in 2020.
Regardless, Mrs Lanigan was in no mind to cough up. “I’m a Yorkshire woman and the thing being about that is there was no way I was paying any ransom to anybody.”
The following day, Wednesday 12 February, the government held a Cobra meeting, designed to co-ordinate the response to major emergencies.
“That’s when you realised just how serious it was,” the former council leader said. “It wasn’t just some hacker sat in a bedroom having a play with computers.”
Paul had to quit his job to look after Clare when the council systems they relied on were hit
While the system was being rebuilt, the council turned the clocks back and returned to using paper and pen. Many functions ground to a halt or were dramatically slowed down.
Redcar husband and wife Paul and Clare were “very reliant on the council” at the time.
Clare needed support from care workers and specialist equipment to help with a debilitating condition called functional neurological disorder.
“You’d be waiting on the phone for hours,” Paul said. “When people were coming it was handwritten notes, so the systems weren’t getting updated. It was a real nightmare.”
The couple waited many months before they got the support they needed. In the meantime, Paul had quit his job to care for his wife.
All the while staff continued to work on getting the council back online and within a few weeks a temporary system for social services had been restored.
By May 2020 the council said it was still only back to 90%, with the system taking 10 months to be fully restored.
“Some of it was able to be recovered; a lot of it was needed to be built from scratch,” said Mr Saunders. “It was a very meticulous, very long process.”
Yet it took several years before evidence emerged suggesting who was behind the cyber-attack.
In February 2022, one of the world’s most prolific ransomware gangs, the Russia-based Conti Group, fell apart.
After Russia invaded its neighbour, pro-Ukrainian hackers leaked the group’s private messages and data, revealing details of some of the most dangerous cyber-criminals.
A year later, in February 2023, a group of Russian hackers were sanctioned by *** and US government over a string of attacks on businesses, schools and councils, including Redcar and Cleveland.
Getty Images
From social services to bin collections, almost all council services were disrupted by the cyber-attack
Earlier that year, Mrs Lanigan gave evidence in Parliament about the attack. She said the response had cost £11.3m and they had received £3.68m compensation from the government.
As the authority was not insured for the attack, the difference had to be taken from its limited reserves.
A council spokesman said that while it had general insurance cover, it still did not have a specific policy which covered a cyber-attack.
They said a recent inspection by external auditors found that at the time the council had had proper arrangements and controls in place to reduce the likelihood of a cyber-security breach.
But it is far from the only council to face such an attack. According to the Information Commissioner’s Office, there were 202 ransomware attacks on local authorities in 2024.
The government said it was “taking action to protect local councils by providing funding to increase their cyber defences”.
But Mr Martin fears the attack on the council, and other public services, could have “shown hostile nation states how to disrupt our society”.
“Redcar and Cleveland was a crisis,” he said. “What about 10 Redcar and Clevelands at the same time? What about a hundred of them? That’s not inconceivable.”

Vodafone alleges Telstra inflated its coverage claims
Vodafone alleges Telstra inflated its coverage claims
Australia’s biggest telecommunications company is facing allegations it misled customers by inflating claims of how far its network reached.
In claims levelled by rival telco Vodafone, Telstra is accused of “dramatically” overstating its reach by as much as 40 per cent – for more than a decade.
Vodafone, along with parent company TPG Telecom, said Telstra advertised its coverage based on a signal strength customers could only get if they used a special external antenna and a powered repeater that is usually installed on a vehicle or building.
Its rival said network coverage claims should be based on signal strength a mobile phone would usually get without any extra devices.
TPG group executive Kieran Cooney said the allegations were “alarming” and would have cost his company customers.
“It appears Telstra has tricked Australians into paying top dollar for coverage they simply can’t get on a regular mobile phone,” he said.
“We are calling on them to make it right … Telstra’s conduct could have misled consumers into believing they can get coverage in places that require special equipment.”
Specifically, TPG alleged Telstra claimed its mobile network was around one million square kilometres greater than it was because it based its figures on the use of an antenna and repeater.
It also said the network covered 99.7 per cent of the population based on using those same devices.
Telstra recently updated its coverage claims to note that the 99.7 per cent mark required an external antenna.
The telco has been contacted for comment
TPG has reported Telstra to the consumer watchdog, called for a regulatory investigation and threatened legal action to stop the practice and potentially force a compensation payment.
The *********** Competition and Consumer Commission said it is considering the claims but would not confirm an investigation into Telstra.
“Mobile operators do not have a standardised or consistent approach to the coverage maps they publish via their websites and in advertising,” a spokeswoman said.
“We continue to urge mobile operators to provide comparable coverage maps … there is no legal requirement for mobile network operators to provide this, but the ACCC has been advocating for more transparency for consumers for some time.”
Australians living in regional and remote areas would pay extra for Telstra service because they believe it is the only option for reliable coverage, a consumer group said.
“If this allegation is true – and the coverage advantage is not as big as people have been led to believe – regional consumers would be forgiven for feeling betrayed,” *********** Communications Consumer Action Network chief executive Carol Bennett said.
“When consumers are misled, markets are distorted, and trust is eroded.”

Boise State coach should weigh Idaho history when invoking Christianity
Boise State coach should weigh Idaho history when invoking Christianity
Boise State University head football coach Spencer Danielson has brought his team considerable success.
His players seem to respect and admire him, with good reason. He promotes good character and hard work at least as well as he prepares players to win.
He has been criticized, including by this board, for his excessive expressions of his Christian faith in his capacity as a public university’s employee.
As the Idaho Statesman’s Shaun Goodwin reported, the criticisms from outside don’t seem to be shared by those on the inside — members of the team, their parents and others.
That doesn’t mean his possible encroaching of the separation of church and state should be taken lightly.
“Coach D, he’s an amazing human, and religion is a huge part of him, and he doesn’t force it upon anybody,” long snapper Mason Hutton told Goodwin.
But another thing is clear: If Danielson were not acting as a Christian leader to his players, he would not be permitted this freedom for very long.
To test this, ask yourself a question: What if Danielson led the athletes in ******* prayer or quoted from the Quran in TV interviews? What if he led them in Hindu worship? What if he repeated passages from ardent atheist Richard Dawkins?
The answer is obvious: It would not be tolerated for a second. Idaho lawmakers would call for him to be fired and likely ax college budgets. There would be outrage, and then some, from the state’s growing far-right population.
Danielson does not operate in a vacuum, and the state of Idaho has a very ugly history of religious intolerance. When the state was founded, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were not allowed to vote, hold office or serve on juries.
That was a long time ago, but there are plenty of contemporary examples, like the repeated efforts to demonize Idaho’s refugees because some of them are *******.
The Idaho Legislature begins each day with a prayer, invariably a Christian one.
There was an exception a decade ago, when leaders of the then-more moderate Idaho Senate decided to embrace ecumenicism by allowing a Hindu cleric to give the prayer — in a country founded on freedom of religion. In response, Sen. Sheryl Nuxoll, as far-right a senator as could then be found, who would find herself a relative centrist today, denounced Hinduism as a “false religion with false gods.” Not to be outdone, Sen. Steve Vick accused Hindus of “worshiping cows.”
The following year, members of the Legislature invited Pastor Shahram Hadian to give a talk called “The True Face of Islam,” a hate-filled rant attacking members of the world’s second-largest religion. Also that year, lawmakers killed a bill that allowed interstate collection of child support payments under the bizarre theory that it would cause Idaho to be governed by Sharia.
That was a decade ago. Today, things are different. Now, it is inconceivable that legislative leaders would allow a Hindu, Buddhist or ******* religious leader to give the opening prayer. Now, bills are introduced to require all public school students to read the King James ****** at length.
Add all that up, and there’s a clear message being sent to any non-Christian in Idaho: Here, the official religion is Christianity, the First Amendment be damned.
Here, if you are something else, you may be tolerated or you may be persecuted. The one thing you will never be is equal.
Danielson is not responsible for this history, but he operates within it. He carries a special obligation to ensure that non-Christian players and potential recruits can be assured that they will be treated as equals. Thankfully, that appears to be what he is doing.
As Danielson said: “There are guys on our team that are Christian, there are guys on our team that are LDS, there’s guys on our team that are *******, there’s guys on our team who at this point in their life want nothing to do with religion.”
Given that, isn’t it reasonable that, from time to time, the team would be given readings and inspirational passages from the Book of ******* and the Quran, as well as critiques of religious belief? And perhaps they are; Danielson would not be interviewed specifically for Goodwin’s story.
There is no doubt that Danielson is well-intentioned. There is no doubt he is striving to be a good coach and a good mentor.
But he is also a state actor. He is the highest-paid employee of Idaho’s largest public university. It is incumbent upon him not to cross lines. Expressing one’s faith as important to their life and decisions is one thing; treating a TV interview as if it were a sermon and the official stance of the Boise State football program is another.
And Danielson has considerable personal power over his players’ futures. He decides when and if they will play, who starts, and — with colleges now paying players — he may also be responsible for how they are compensated. He is something very akin to his boss.
He should realize that when he says things like, “It will be based on giving Jesus the glory. … If people don’t like that, don’t come here.”
That could mean some very good, upstanding and talented teenagers might think they are not welcome at Boise State if they don’t want to give Christ the glory.
Statesman editorials are the opinion of the Idaho Statesman’s editorial board. Board members are opinion editor Scott McIntosh, opinion writer Bryan Clark, editor Chadd Cripe, newsroom editors Dana Oland and Jim Keyser and community members Greg Lanting, Terri Schorzman and Garry Wenske.

U.S. credit rating downgrade will affect its markets

U.S. stocks popped last week on the back of a trade truce between America and China, in which they mutually agreed to cut tariffs for 90 days. Technology stocks soared, with Tesla and Nvidia leading the pack. Absent new developments on the tariff front, however, it’s unclear if this buoyant sentiment can last.
For one, the U.S.’ credit rating was downgraded by Moody’s Ratings to the second highest. This means investors could demand higher returns for U.S. Treasurys amid their ostensibly lower trustworthiness. Rising Treasury yields, in turn, could pressure stocks. Even though Moody is merely the latest to join Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings in bumping down the U.S. from the top rating — which did so in 2011 and 2023 respectively — it might send another crack through an already fragile stock market.
Although Nvidia was one of the winners of last week’s rally, it is still contending with chip export restrictions to China and increased scrutiny over its business activities. That’s a big deal because China’s artificial intelligence sector is “not behind” that of the U.S., and will probably reach around $50 billion within three years, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Losing out on that market would be a “tremendous loss,” he added.
Whether last week’s rally can be sustained will rely, then, on the headlines that will come from the White House this week.
What you need to know today
Moody’s cuts U.S.’ credit ratingMoody’s Ratings cut the United States’ sovereign credit rating down one notch to Aa1 from Aaa, which is the highest possible, citing the growing burden of financing the federal government’s budget deficit and debt. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday called the downgrade a “lagging indicator,” claiming it reflects conditions during the Biden administration.
Winning week for U.S. stocksAll major U.S. indexes rose Friday. For the week, the S&P 500 surged 5.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 3.4%. The Nasdaq Composite popped 7.2% on the back of strong showings from technology stocks such as Tesla and Nvidia, which jumped 17% and 16% respectively on the week. U.S. futures slipped Sunday evening. Europe’s regional Stoxx 600 added 0.4% Friday. Shares of Richemont jumped 7% after the Cartier owner posted better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter sales, in a sign wealthy consumers are still spending on luxury.
Nvidia denies sending chip designs to ChinaFollowing a report in the Financial Times that Nvidia is working on a research and development center in Shanghai in light of new U.S. export curbs, the chipmaker told CNBC it is “not sending any GPU designs to China to be modified to comply with export controls.” A source familiar with the matter told CNBC that the company is leasing new space for current employees, but is not sending any IP or GPU designs there.
Trump says he will broker peaceU.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday in a post on Truth Social that he plans to speak separately to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday in an effort to reach a ceasefire between the two countries. America is also working with Britain to establish an India-Pakistan ceasefire alongside “confidence-building measures” and dialogue, U.K. Foreign Minister David Lammy said on Saturday.

Big ******** companies like Alibaba show that AI-powered ads are giving shopping a boost
Alibaba, Tencent and JD.com reported earnings this week that not only reflected improving ******** consumer spending, but also the growing benefits of artificial intelligence in advertising.
AI is helping Tencent lift its click-through rates — a measure of success for online ads — to nearly 3%, company management said on an earnings call Wednesday, according to a FactSet transcript. That’s up sharply from a 0.1% click-through rate for banner ads historically, and around 1% for feed ads, the company said.
JD.com said its marketing revenues climbed by 15.7% to 22.32 billion yuan for the quarter, also partly attributing that rise to AI tools.
Lastly, Alibaba noted that marketing revenue, which it calls “customer management,” grew 12% year on year to nearly $10 billion, thanks in part to increased use of the company’s AI tool, Quanzhantui, for boosting merchants’ marketing efficiency.

Highly Limited Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-Ray In Stock At Amazon
Highly Limited Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-Ray In Stock At Amazon
The 30th Anniversary Edition of Super Mario Bros. is up for grabs at Amazon. Released in 2024 by Umbrella Entertainment, this commemorative edition includes a 4K remaster of the infamous 1993 live-action film. The two-disc set also comes with a newly restored alternative cut of the film as well as a bevy of fresh bonus content. It’s a bit surprising to see the 30th Anniversary Edition in stock at Amazon, as it sold out alongside the pricier collector’s editions last year. Plus, the 4K Blu-ray release was limited to 3,000 units, and the 1080p Blu-ray was limited to only 1,500 units. Both versions are shipped and sold by Amazon and include a numbered slip cover.
The 4K remaster is available for $56, and the 1080p remaster is $45. If you live in the Midwest or a different qualifying region, you might see a 30% coupon on Amazon’s listing that will drop the price to only $31.50 at checkout. Note: Umbrella Entertainment is an *********** distributor, but the 30th Anniversary Edition is a region-free release, so the discs play on US Blu-ray players.
The 30th Anniversary Edition being in stock at Amazon is probably partially related to its poor visibility. It’s easy to miss it due to the many different Blu-ray listings for the movie on Amazon. The most popular Amazon store page for Super Mario Bros. has over 8,000 reviews and includes a listing for the 30th Anniversary Edition on 4K, but it sold out a long time ago. In comparison, the store page where you can buy it only has 58 customer reviews and has at least partially been buried due to incorrect labeling.
Amazon accidentally marked the 4K Blu-ray edition as standard Blu-ray, making it appear, at first glance, that both options are the same product at different prices. But that’s not true. The more expensive option comes with 4K and standard Blu-ray discs–the in-depth product description correctly notes this–while the cheaper option includes two 1080p Blu-ray discs.
Take a closer look at the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary Edition below.
$56 | Limited to 3,000 units
As mentioned, this two-disc set comes with the numbered sleeve shown above (1 to 3,000), which makes it a pretty cool piece of Super Mario history and a unique display piece. Disc 1 is the original theatrical release remastered in 4K. In addition to the new 4K remaster, you can watch the newly restored workprint in HD on the 1080p Blu-ray disc. Exclusive to the 30th Anniversary Edition, the workprint cut is the full movie with numerous changes to select scenes throughout the 105-minute film.
Both discs play in 16:9 aspect ratio, and the image ratio for the remaster is 1.85:1. Along with the noticeably improved viewing experience, the audio experience benefits from 5.1 and 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio.
The 30th Anniversary Edition comes with previously released special features as well as a bunch of brand-new bonuses that add to the overall experience, especially if you’re curious about how this fascinatingly weird movie was made. Here’s a full list of special features, which includes multiple audio commentaries, restored deleted scenes, storyboards, and more. Outside of the last four bullet points on Disc 2, all of the bonus content is exclusive to the 30th Anniversary Edition.

Disc 1 (4K Blu-ray, 2160p)

$45 – 30% discount (if eligible) | Limited to 1,500 units
The other Blu-ray option on this under-the-radar Amazon listing is actually the 1080p Blu-ray. This two-disc edition was limited to 1,500 numbered units. Once again, you get the collectible slip cover with the cool artwork shown above. I ordered a copy from this listing the other day. It arrived in its shrink wrap without any dents, creases, or tears in the cardboard sleeve–it looks mint.
The standard Blu-ray edition comes with the same on-disc content across both of its discs. And while you miss out on 2160p resolution, it still offers an improved viewing experience compared to earlier Blu-ray (and DVD) releases. That’s because the Blu-ray edition was created with the 4K remaster, so you’re still getting the overarching benefits, just scaled down from 2160p to 1080p.
As such, there’s no reason to list the bonus content here again. Disc 1 has all of the same audio commentaries and other features outlined above, with the only difference being the resolution (1080p Blu-ray). Disc 2, meanwhile, is the same Blu-ray disc regardless of which version you buy.
Heads up: If the store page defaults to a third-party seller, click “Other sellers on Amazon” and choose the option that is sold and shipped by Amazon (with Prime shipping). Given its limited availability, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the 30th Anniversary Edition disappear soon.
Nintendo let the film’s producers use the Super Mario Bros. license without any creative restrictions. This freedom ultimately led to the creation of a very weird live-action comedy with some bonkers plot points, dialogue exchanges, and character backstories.
Super Mario Bros. was widely panned by critics and was a box office flop back in 1993. But like many “bad” movies, it has has gained a cult following over the years. Personally, I loved the film’s wackiness as a kid, and I still think it’s a rather fascinating piece of Nintendo media that I appreciate for its boldness. It takes a lot of risks, and while many don’t work all that well, the commitment to the unexpected makes it a memorable watch. If you want to check it out for yourself without dropping over $40, you can get Super Mario Bros. on DVD for only $7.33 (was $13) at Amazon.
The film was directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. Bob Hoskins played Mario opposite John Leguizamo as Luigi. Other key roles included Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy and Dennis Hopper as President Koopa.
As the first live-action Hollywood movie based on a video game, its failure became a cautionary tale for Nintendo as well as the video game and movie industries at large. Over the next two-plus decades, the majority of video game adaptations were either critical or commercial failures (and often both). But the tide has shifted over the past five years or so thanks to massive commercial hits like Pokemon Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, A Minecraft Movie, and, of course, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Nintendo waited three decades before bringing the Mario Bros. back to theaters. The 2023 animated adaptation produced in collaboration with Universal Pictures destroyed box office records. At over $1.3 billion at the box office, it’s the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made. It’s in the top 20 highest-grossing films ******* and pulled in approximately 35 times more than the 1993 adaptation. As of this moment, the animated Mario Movie is the only game adaptation north of $1 billion, but A Minecraft Movie might soon be the second.
If you want to display collectible versions of the two extremely different Mario movies side by side, the new Walmart-exclusive Steelbook Edition of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available for $28. Released in March, this 4K Blu-ray edition comes with a yellow Question Block case. Walmart also has the Power-Up Steelbook Edition that launched in 2023, but it’ll cost you $50.
The 1993 film wasn’t the first time live-action Super Mario Bros. appeared on screens across the US. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, the first TV series based on the franchise, aired in 1989. Super Show offered a mix of live-action segments and animated scenes based on the first two Mario platformers for NES. Nintendo dropped the live-action segments in the two sequel series based on Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. You can get all three series as well as The Legend of Zelda: The Complete Series–which was the animated segment in Mario Bros. Super Show on Fridays–for cheap on DVD at Amazon.

GPs to help NHS find more infected blood victims
GPs to help NHS find more infected blood victims
GPs in England are to help the NHS find more undiagnosed patients affected by the contaminated blood scandal.
It is thought thousands of people could have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus through contaminated blood transfusions in the 1970s, 80s and 90s; part of a scandal which affected more than 30,000 people in the ***.
From June, patients signing up to a GP practice, who received a blood transfusion before 1996, will be offered a test for hepatitis C.
The BBC revealed the scale of undiagnosed cases last year, as people with life-threatening liver damage caused by the virus over many years continue to be identified.
Hepatitis C can now be treated by modern anti-viral drugs to eliminate the virus for most patients.
But if it goes undetected and undiagnosed there may not be any noticeable symptoms for some time and it can infect the liver and cause serious damage, leaving the organ beyond repair.
Maureen Arkley, who died last year, was diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis of the liver in 2023, more than 40 years after she had an operation involving multiple blood transfusions. These were on her medical records but she was not told by her GP or anyone in the NHS that she could have been exposed to the virus.
BBC News highlighted her case as one of many people let down by the lack of testing following the infected blood scandal.
It is one of the biggest treatment disasters in NHS history – 3,000 people who were infected with **** and hepatitis C after being given contaminated blood products have died.
Many of the victims were haemophiliacs, who were given infected blood products as part of their treatment.
Many thousands more were given transfusions using contaminated blood after accidents, emergencies or childbirth.
Maureen died in February 2024, five months after her diagnosis and 47 years after a blood transfusion infected her.
“The end was utterly horrific, she weighed less than four stone when she died,” her daughter Victoria told the BBC.
NHS England says around 400,000 people each year, born before 1996, will be asked if they have ever had a blood transfusion through the online GP registration form.
This was a move recommended in the Infected Blood Inquiry report, published in May 2024.
If a previous blood transfusion is confirmed, patients will be able to test themselves for hepatitis C at home, using a finger prick blood test which is then posted to a lab for analysis.
Tests can also be carried out at GP surgeries, ******* health clinics and other places, NHS England says.
The charity Hepatitis C Trust is also encouraging anyone who had a blood transfusion before 1996, including current GP patients, to get tested.
“Every two weeks we hear from someone infected with hepatitis C through a transfusion who is only now finding out,” said the charity’s chief executive, Rachel Halford.
“All of these people have had hepatitis C for more than three decades; some are very ill. A more proactive approach is critical to reaching and diagnosing those who remain unaware of their infection.”
NHS England medical director Prof Stephen Powis said the “simple change” to the GP registration process was “a vital step forward” to ensure nobody affected by contaminated blood is “undiagnosed and unsupported”.
“The failures of the contaminated blood scandal have had a horrifying impact for patients and their families for decades, and I would like to reiterate our deepest apologies for the role the health service played in the suffering and loss for so many,” he added.
Health officials say the risk of getting an infection from a blood transfusion or from blood products since screening of blood donations was introduced, is very low.
All blood donations have been screened for ****, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C since September 1991.

Federal agents combating child exploitation must also grapple with public reluctance to talk about crisis
Federal agents combating child exploitation must also grapple with public reluctance to talk about crisis
Three years after her son’s suicide, Pauline Stuart said she now has a better perspective on who her real friends are.
Stuart’s son, Ryan Last, was 17 and a high-achieving high school student in a close-knit family when he took his own life in 2022. He did so shortly after becoming the victim of a criminal “sextortion” plot.

Four men were charged last week in connection with a scheme to target and extort Stuart’s son. But there is another pernicious problem Stuart is trying to combat: a public aversion to acknowledging and talking about America’s crisis of child sex exploitation.
“It’s almost like people feel like they’ll get ‘cooties’ if they simply talk about it,” Stuart told CBS News in an interview from her Oregon home. “People I thought were my friends now seem uncomfortable when I walk in. It seems they feel talking about this tragedy is ‘contagious’ and can’t seem to handle talking to me.”
Ryan Last’s suicide is just one in a flood of child sex exploitation cases since 2022, including a distinctive and alarming surge in cases of what’s now called sextortion, in which children are lured into sharing illicit images and later blackmailed by the recipients.
A CBS News review of FBI data and reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children shows more than 20 million tips regarding potential child sex exploitation have been reported to safety officials in each of the past two years. FBI data showed the number of sextortion cases has quintupled since 2019.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also told CBS News, “We’ve seen an alarming rise in the most urgent and dangerous threats: a 192% increase in online enticement, a 1,325% spike in AI-generated abuse material and a growing number of reports linked to violent online groups targeting children.”
But Stuart, child safety experts and federal investigators who spoke with CBS News said the silence and a dearth of news coverage of the crisis of child sex abuse may hamper their efforts to warn families, combat the problem and catch the criminals.
“Parents just don’t think it can happen to their children, so they just shut down conversations about it,” Stuart said.
“This is a topic that does make people squeamish, but we have to be direct and lean into the discomfort,” said Adam Rosenberg, the executive director of the Baltimore-based Center for Hope, which helps prevent child abuse and assist victims.
“If we adults can’t talk about it, how do we expect our children to do so,” Rosenberg said.
The Justice Department, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino have launched efforts to raise the profile of the crisis.
In a public campaign branded “Operation Restore Justice”, the Justice Department executed a nationwide public campaign by federal agents and local law enforcement to track down offenders, execute arrests and file criminal charges.
At least 200 arrests have been announced, including an Illinois man accused of producing illicit images of an 8-year-old, a West Michigan teacher alleged to have unlawful photos of a student and a Florida prison inmate accused of having child sex abuse images on a contraband phone.
The Justice Department sought to publicize the campaign and its impact through targeted local news releases from FBI field offices and public remarks earlier this month from its headquarters in Washington, D.C., by Bondi and Patel.
With network TV cameras focused on her speech, Bondi said, “Parents, you have to know: Your child has no right to privacy on the internet,” Bondi said in her speech. “You have to monitor what they are doing.”
“These depraved human beings, if convicted, will face the maximum penalty in prison, some for life,” Bondi said. “If you are online targeting a child, you will not escape us.”
FBI field offices and the 93 U.S. attorney offices, which have reach into local community media, spotlighted local arrests from “Operation Restore Justice,” including an announcement from the U.S. attorney in New Jersey who publicized the arrests of four New Jersey men and one New Jersey woman on child ************ charges between April 28 and May 2. The initiative, which yielded hundreds of arrests, was covered in hundreds of media outlet reports that amplified the issue.
Bongino, who was a talk-radio star and social media giant with an audience of millions when he took his post at the FBI, has used his digital platforms to press the issue. In a May 7 social media post, he wrote, “Operation Restore Justice is a powerful message: If you harm children in America, you will be given no sanctuary. There is nowhere you can hide. You will be hunted down, and you will be prosecuted.”
In a slickly-produced FBI video about the initiative, the agency shows agents working in the field in New York, Baltimore, Cleveland, Atlanta and Chicago, as part of the operation.
“Crimes against children, particularly the crimes targeted in Operation Restore Justice, are some of the most heartbreaking and difficult cases we encounter.”
Justice Department spokesperson Kristina Mastropasqua told CBS News., “Parents, caregivers, and communities often do not realize the nature of the threat, how they can help in combatting it, or that they ought to be demanding safer online environments for their children.”
Rosenberg, whose Maryland-based organization has also helped advocate for tougher laws to combat child abuse, said it is critically important to remove the stigma around conversations about child sex exploitation.
“We need to talk directly. We can’t tip-toe around it,” Rosenberg said. “We need to reduce the stigma in the discussion, as we did in the past with the topic of AIDS and *******.”
Rosenberg said government agencies are wise to use their platforms and communication tools to raise the issue and encourage conversations about child sex abuse.
An FBI official told CBS News the agency is seeing an upward trend in risks to children, in part because of advances in artificial intelligence technology, the pervasiveness of certain phone apps and criminal organizations that target children for extortion money.
Stuart, who last week was notified of a series of arrests in connection with the extortion of her son, said parents need to be more assertive and resourceful in discussing the risks with each other and with children.
“Parents think it absolutely can’t happen to their kids,” Stuart said. “And they’re wrong. We had parental controls on Ryan’s phone. We had limits on what sites he could go on. He couldn’t download apps without our approval. It’s such a hard subject to cover, but there have been so many boys who’ve lost their lives to this.”
Undated photo of Ryan Last, who was 17 and a high-achieving high school student in a close-knit family when he took his own life in 2022 soon after he became the victim of a “sextortion” plot.

Mastropasqua said the Justice Department works closely with other law enforcement agencies and experts to share prevention tools. She said, “The Department’s primary responsibility is always to the victims.”
Last week, the Justice Department announced arrests in connection with the extortion of Stuart’s son. Among them was a citizen of Côte d’Ivoire, Alfred Kassi, who was accused of sextortion against Ryan Stuart and arrested by Ivorian authorities on April 29.
“At the time of his arrest,” investigators said, “Kassi allegedly still had the sextortion messages he sent to the 17-year-old victim in February 2022 on his phone.”

St. Louis braces for more severe weather; recovery ongoing
ST. LOUIS — More severe weather is in the forecast for St. Louis this week. This may disrupt recovery efforts in an area of the city devastated by a likely tornado that touched down Friday and killed five people.
“We estimate over a billion dollars in property damage. This does not account for the personal human toll that this has taken in our community,” said Mayor Cara Spencer.
Mayor Cara Spencer notes during a Sunday press conference that people should prepare for the heavy rain and damaging winds. The focus of the effort is switching from rescue to preserving property. The fire department and the regional response team have completed their sweep of the area, including 3,800 buildings.
The city is working on organizing volunteers and asking for donations of tarps, wood, screws, boards, gloves, etc. There are several drop sites for items. They are at the O’Fallon YMCA, Urban League, Metro at 1400 Kingshighway, and 4144 Martin Luther King Drive for The Ville. Donate now at ULSTL.COM/DONATENOW.
Large regional contractors are working with the city on short-term storm preparation and long-term neighborhood restoration. They are working on the next steps in the long recovery.
Firefighters say some people are coming to the area to take pictures of the damage. They are warning people that the area is very dangerous and to stay away. There may be downed electrical wires, nails, and other hazards.
Police say that officers are also working 12-hour shifts to keep the damaged area and the rest of the city safe. The 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is being enforced in the 5th and 6th police districts. So far there have been no reports of looting.
The American Red Cross is working to help with relief. One of their shelters is completely full, and they are working to open another one. If you need assistance call 1-800-733-2767.
St. Louis Emergency Management asks that people prepare for the next round of storms. Sign up for Notify STL to get alerts. They are working on organizing volunteers to help with the recovery efforts.
