  1. Canada discusses joining US Golden Dome missile defence programme Canada discusses joining US Golden Dome missile defence programme The ********* government said it is in talks with the US over joining its proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system, aimed at countering “next-generation” aerial threats. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office said there are “active discussions” between Canada and the US on security, including on existing and new programmes like the Golden Dome. US president Donald Trump unveiled the plan for the new missile defence system earlier on Tuesday, announcing an initial sum of $25bn (£18.7bn) to build it. He added Canada has expressed interest in joining. There are doubts from experts on how the US would deliver a comprehensive system and it is unclear how Canada would participate or how much it would pay. Canada’s openness to joining the proposed Golden Dome system comes amid ongoing trade and security negotiations between the two countries, after Trump threatened steep tariffs on Canada and said it would be better off as a US state. This galvanised a wave of national patriotism in Canada that ushered in a historic election win for Carney’s Liberal government. “Canadians gave the prime minister a strong mandate to negotiate a comprehensive new security and economic relationship with the United States,” said Audrey Champoux, a spokesperson for Carney. “To that end, the prime minister and his ministers are having wide-ranging and constructive discussions with their American counterparts,” she said. “These discussions naturally include strengthening NORAD and related initiatives such as the Golden Dome.” But Ms Champoux added it is too early to say what Canada might pay into the programme, or how it would work for the country. Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said that Canada has expressed interest in being part of the Golden Dome. “We’ll be talking to them,” the US president said. “They want to have protection also, so as usual, we help Canada.” Trump said that the new Golden Dome defence missile programme would be operational by the end of his time in office, and that it would come with a price tag of $175bn. He added that he his administration is looking for Canada to “pay their fair share.” Canada and the US already partner on the North American Aerospace Defense Command, also known as NORAD – a system that is responsible for aerospace and maritime surveillance, warning and defence of the region, and that can detect and shoot down cruise missiles. NOARD has been in place since 1958, and both countries in recent years have been engaged in discussions to modernise it. Trump said the proposed Golden Dome is meant to target increasingly sophisticated aerial weapons, and will include space-based sensors and interceptors. He said the system would be “capable even of intercepting missiles launched from the other side of the world, or launched from space”. It is partly inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, which the country has used to intercept rockets and missiles since 2011. Experts have expressed doubts on whether the US would be able to build a similarly comprehensive defence system, given its larger land mass. Shashank Joshi, defence editor at the Economist, told the BBC that one way the Golden Dome could work was by using thousands of satellites to spot and track missiles and then use interceptors in orbit to fire at the missiles as they take off and take them out. He said the US military would take the plan seriously but it was unrealistic to think it would be completed during Trump’s term, and the huge cost would ***** up a large chunk of the US defence budget. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the eventual price tag could be $542bn over 20 years, on the space-based parts of the system alone. 3. The Last Of Us 3 Could Happen If The Story Is “Worthy” Enough The Last Of Us 3 Could Happen If The Story Is “Worthy” Enough The second series of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us has been critically acclaimed since it debuted on HBO Max earlier this year, and with the TV adaptation earning rave reviews, fans are wondering if this could result in a third game being made. The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann says that he’d be keen to revisit the post-apocalyptic series, provided that certain conditions are met. One of the primary requirements for Druckmann is that he’d want the threequel to have a story that’s “worthy” of being set in The Last of Us series. The creator says that he aims for quality over quantity, an artistic vision that has extended to other projects he has worked on. “While I am the caretaker of this franchise, whatever the title is that Sony has entrusted me with, it’s important for me that everything is of high quality. I don’t want to just make a lot of it. I want to just be very thoughtful about everything that we make,” Druckmann said in an interview with Sacred Symbols. “When we did the show, now we’ve teamed up with, I feel like, the best TV-makers, with HBO. We’re making the best version of it. If we were ever to come back to it, I want to make sure that it’s a story worthy of The Last Of Us. I love that world. I love these characters. With the right opportunity, yeah, I would totally jump at it.” So far, there have been only two games set in The Last of Us series. Both of these titles have been remastered–the first game has been remastered twice–and there was even a live-service spin-off game in development before it was canceled as Naughty Dog decided to focus on single-player games instead. While the studio is currently working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet alongside at least one other game, Druckmann has mentioned in the past that he does have a concept for The Last of Us 3 and that he feels like there could probably be “one more chapter to the story,” to tell. While we do know that he is currently working on another Naughty Dog title other than Intergalactic, he did mention that he has taken on more of a producer role that has allowed him to mentor the team developing this mystery title. 5. PNY launches new high-speed microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2, with 890 MB/s read speeds PNY launches new high-speed microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2, with 890 MB/s read speeds Hot on the heels of Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders and the potentially wallet-straining news that the new handheld is switching to microSD Express storage technology, PNY has unveiled its new microSD Express Flash Memory Cards. PNY says that its new cards are capable of up to 890MB/s read speeds and up to 750MB/s write speeds, 4.4 times faster than standard UHS-I microSD cards. It features PCIe Gen3x1 microSD technology, which should, in theory, reduce load times of your favorite Nintendo Switch 2 games and even improve performance. You may like The Nintendo Switch 2 comes with 256GB of onboard storage as standard, so if you want any more, you’ll need to invest in a microSD Express card like this one. PNY says its microSD Express Cards maintain backwards compatibility with USH-I and USH-II host devices at their respective speeds. They also come with unique heat dissipation technology and built-in microSD thermal monitoring PNY claims adjusts to optimize temperature and keep things running smoothly. PNY’s microSD Express cards are also rated as magnet proof, shock proof, temperature proof, waterproof, drop proof, X-Ray proof, humidity proof, and wear-out proof. They also come with a lifetime warranty. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. That’s cheaper than the licensed Nintendo Samsung microSD Express card and offerings from SanDisk at the same capacity. The switch to microSD Express is just one of a number of ways in which the Switch 2 is a much more expensive proposition compared to its predecessor. The overall console retails at $449.99, and while the console itself hasn’t seen any tariff-induced price increases, Joy-**** 2 controllers, the Pro Controller, Switch 2 camera, dock set, wheel set, and charging grips are all more expensive than initially planned. Likewise, big titles like Mario Kart World cost $80. Nintendo Switch 2’s official specs confirm its GPU is a custom Nvidia SoC (Ampere-based) with 12GB of memory. As such, you can expect performance similar to that of the old RTX 2050. Follow Tom’s Hardware on Google News to get our up-to-date news, analysis, and reviews in your feeds. 9. Got a Windows 11 PC and an Android phone? Microsoft wants to make using apps across those devices a seamless experience Got a Windows 11 PC and an Android phone? Microsoft wants to make using apps across those devices a seamless experience Windows 11 is getting a new Cross Device Resume feature It’s like Apple’s Handoff ability for using apps across a phone and PC In this case, it’ll hook up a Windows 11 PC and Android phone, with Microsoft showing off the feature at Build 2025 Here’s some good news for Windows 11 users who are jealous of the convenience of Apple’s Handoff feature that lets you seamlessly resume what you were last doing in apps when you switch between iOS and Mac devices. Microsoft has this functionality inbound, allowing for a similar way of working across Windows 11 and Android smartphones, as evidenced by a session from Build 2025 that was uploaded to YouTube. As Windows Central reports, the demonstration of ‘Cross Device Resume’ in Windows 11 has been removed from the YouTube clip, with Microsoft editing the video to strip it out. You may like Luckily, well-known leaker on X, PhantomOfEarth, managed to grab a screenshot of the deleted demo which you can see below. Taskbar hover card UI used for the upcoming taskbar recommendations feature + Resume on taskbar, w/ Spotify support, in Windows 11 (taken from a pre-recorded Build session*) pic.twitter.com/C8eUTyjTanMay 20, 2025 It showed how Cross Device Resume works with Spotify, kicking off with a song playing on an Android smartphone, and then moving to a Windows 11 PC. After having switched over to the Windows 11 desktop, the Spotify app is flagged with a phone icon in the taskbar, and when hovered over, it offers a Resume option to continue playing the track that the user was listening to on their Android device. It’ll resume from the exact spot where you left off on your mobile, as you might expect. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. (Image credit: Image by Karolina Grabowska from Pixabay) Analysis: Project Resume So, Microsoft is apparently working on giving software developers the ability to include this Cross Device Resume functionality with their apps (for those who make both Android and Windows versions of their products, of course). From the info gleaned here, it looks like Spotify will use this feature, and apparently WhatsApp might, too. That is assuming this Handoff doppelganger ever makes the cut for Windows 11. Clearly, it’s not quite ready to be publicly aired yet, given Microsoft yanked down the part of the video which showed the way Cross Device Resume works. However, it seems like a sensible idea to bring this functionality to Microsoft’s desktop OS – indeed, you might wonder why this hasn’t been done before. That’s a good question, especially considering that it’s a very useful feature, and one that Apple has provided to Mac users for a decade now, so Microsoft looks very behind the times. Although as Windows Central pointed out, cross-device continuity is something Microsoft has been toying with for a long time, ever since Project Rome first came to light in 2016 – although that was a much grander vision of working across different devices. One obvious element that needs improving is the name. I’m hoping Cross Device Resume is a placeholder for now, as it’s lacking a good deal in snappiness when compared to Handoff. Although it may just be shortened to Resume if the screenshot of the feature in action provided on X is anything to go by. Interestingly, some keen-eyed Windows 11 watchers have previously flagged up a Cross Device Resume process running in the background of the operating system. This is seemingly a way of working on OneDrive files across devices, so it looks like Microsoft’s plan is to expand this groundwork to cover a range of apps, not just its cloud storage service. 10. Government takes aim at multiple parking app ‘hassle’ Government takes aim at multiple parking app ‘hassle’ The government has announced a “one app fits all” approach to paying for parking, to end what it calls the “scramble” to download multiple payment platforms that motorists currently face. Soon, drivers will be able to use any of the large parking apps to pay, rather than having to download new ones for each new car park, the Department for Transport says. The National Parking Platform (NPP) has been in trial phase, but will now be handed over an industry body to be expanded across the country – though only to car parks which opt to sign up. Motorist’s association the RAC welcomed the move but said it needed to be taken on by many more car parks before it made a real difference to drivers. “Paying to park a car should be one of the simplest things any driver does, but things have got much more complicated in recent years”, RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said. “If the arrival of a National Parking Platform removes that hassle, it’s definitely a welcome move,” he added. “But the key will be ensuring as many car park operators as possible sign up to the system.” Under the NPP, drivers can use any of the main parking apps in any car park which is signed up to the scheme. This means, for example, a car park which uses the Ringo app would also accept payments from the JustPark app. The government said this would end the “scramble to download multiple apps and encouraging a more flexible parking experience”. The trial ******* included 10 local authorities in England, and more than half a million transactions were made during it, according to the government. It says the NPP “will be onboarding more local authorities imminently”. NPP literature also says it is open to local authorities and private parking providers across the ***. The running of the scheme has now been passed from the government to the British Parking Association, (BPA) which represents the parking sector. “Today’s announcement marks the result of six years of dedicated work by our parking sector to make paying for parking easier,” said its boss, Andrew Pester. “We’ve strongly supported the National Parking Platform from the start, so we’re thrilled with this outcome.” Source link #Government #takes #aim #multiple #parking #app #hassle Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. China says Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense plan increases risk of “space becoming a battlefield” China says Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense plan increases risk of “space becoming a battlefield” China said Wednesday that the Trump administration’s plan to construct a so-called “Golden Dome” missile defense system to protect the U.S. from missile attacks carries “strong offensive implications” and will increase the risks of a global arms race and militarizing outer space. President Trump said Tuesday that his administration had “officially selected an architecture for this state-of-the-art system,” and that a budget package currently being deliberated by Congress would provide an initial $25 billion in funding for the project. An unclassified assessment by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency shows the military expects to be contending with missile threats that are greater in “scale and sophistication in the coming decade,” noting specifically that “China and Russia are developing an array of novel delivery systems to exploit gaps in the current U.S. ballistic missile defenses.” “North Korea has successfully tested ballistic missiles with sufficient range to reach the entire homeland, and Iran has space launch vehicles it could use to develop a military-viable ICBM by 2035, should Tehran decide to pursue the capability,” the DIA assessment said, warning that already, “there is no part of the homeland which cannot be struck by existing ICBMs.” President Trump speaks alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in the Oval Office at the White House, May 20, 2025, in Washington, as he announces plans for a “Golden Dome” national ballistic and cruise missile defense system. Getty But China, which has been deepening its ties with Russia while rapidly developing its missile and other military capabilities, including its nuclear weapons, accused the Trump administration of obsessing over U.S. defense at the risk of endangering global security. “The United States, in pursuing a ‘U.S.-first’ policy, is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself. This violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability. China is seriously concerned about this,” ******** foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Wednesday during a regular briefing in Beijing, according to multiple international news agencies. The White House plan “heightens the risk of space becoming a battlefield, fuels an arms race, and undermines international security,” she said. “We urge the United States to abandon the development and deployment of a global missile defense system as soon as possible.” The U.S. military has said for years that China and Russia are already deploying weapons in space, with reports suggesting everything from laser weapons to ******** satellites with the ability to disable or even capture American satellites. Last year, the U.S. warned Russia against deploying a nuclear-capable anti-satellite weapon that analysts believe could loiter in space for long periods of time before emitting a burst that would disable all satellites around it. In Russia’s capital, meanwhile, the Kremlin said Wednesday that Mr. Trump’s plans would require consultations between Moscow and Washington, but a spokesperson said it was largely a “sovereign matter” for the U.S. It was a softer stance than taken previously by the regime of President Vladimir Putin, which had recently published a statement saying the new American missile defense system would explicitly give Moscow an impetus “for a significant strengthening of the arsenal for conducting combat operations in space.” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, as he made his announcement, that he’d not yet spoken with Putin about his plans, but he said he would, “at the right time.” China and Russia, in a joint statement issued earlier in the month, called the Golden Dome project, “deeply destabilizing in nature,” and the two U.S. adversaries said it would turn space into “an arena for armed confrontation.” Tucker Reals Tucker Reals is CBSNews.com’s foreign editor, based in the CBS News London bureau. 13. Jay Slater’s friends ‘cannot be located’, inquest hears Jay Slater’s friends ‘cannot be located’, inquest hears Phil McCannReporting fromPreston Coroner’s CourtJonny Humphries BBC News, Lancashire Family handout Jay Slater was on holiday in Tenerife when he went missing Friends and witnesses who were in Tenerife with Jay Slater when he disappeared “could not be located” to take part in his inquest despite months-long police efforts to find them. Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, went missing in the early hours of 17 June 2024 after attending a music festival in Playa de las Americas on the Spanish island. The apprentice bricklayer’s body was found by Spanish police at the bottom of a ravine in a remote national park on 15 July, an inquest at Preston Coroner’s Court heard. Senior coroner Dr James Adeley said a number of witnesses, including friends who travelled with him, were still being searched for by police. Mr Slater had got into a car with two men and was driven to an AirBnB in the remote village of Masca, around 22 miles (36km) away from where he was staying. He was last heard from around 8:30 BST that morning, when he called his friend Lucy Law and told her he was lost and had 1% battery on his phone before the call cut out, she previously told the BBC. At the opening of the inquest Dr Adeley said efforts had been made to find Miss Law and also another friend, Brad Hargreaves. Lucy Law is understood to currently be on holiday in Tenerife. The disappearance of Jay Slater sparked a month long ******* of intense publicity on both mainstream and social media The Metropolitan Police had also tried to serve a witness summons on Ayub Qassim, understood to be the man who had rented the AirBnB, but he was not living at the address the force had on record for him. One witness who did give evidence via video-link, Joshua Forshaw, said he had got chatting to Mr Slater and his friends at the airport. He told the court the last time he saw Mr Slater was at the Papayago nightclub, which was hosting the NRG music festival, on the night of 16 June 2024. “It wasn’t long after the event had started,” Mr Forshaw said. “He seemed to be in a happy mood, joyful to be there.” “He was shaking our hands and said hello to us, he seemed dead happy.” The coroner pointed out that in his original statement Mr Forshaw had described Mr Slater as appearing to be “off his head” on drugs. In court Mr Forshaw said he believed Mr Slater had drunk a lot of alcohol, but was unsure about what drugs he had taken He said the last time he saw him Mr Slater told him “some kids had just took an AP off somebody” and that he was “on his way to sell it for 10 quid”. He clarified that AP referred to a luxury watch brand and quid was a “code for a grand [£1,000]”. Handout Jay Slater with his mother, Debbie Duncan Hours later, when he was in bed, Mr Forshaw received a video from Mr Slater showing him in an area of mountains, which he said was between 05:50 and 07:20 on 17 June. Mr Forshaw also told the inquest Mr Slater sent him a picture of himself with “two knives in his trousers”, alongside the caption “in case it kicks off”. He said he never saved the picture but later told Lancashire Police about it. Mr Forshaw said at 07:30 he went to the hotel where Mr Slater had been staying with his friend Bradley. While he was there, Mr Slater video-called Bradley through Snapchat. He said he could not recall much of the conversation, but said Mr Slater was talking about not being able to afford a taxi. He said Bradley suggested they could sort the payment when it arrived at the hotel. When asked how Mr Slater sounded, Mr Forshaw replied: “He wasn’t distressed, didn’t seem angry or anything, was just certain he was going to make it back home.” He added he could not remember whether he told Bradley about the picture with the knives, which was sent a short time before the call. ‘No signs of attack’ Giving evidence earlier, Dr Richard Shepherd, a consultant forensic pathologist, told the court Mr Slater’s cause of death was likely severe head injury. He said: “The patterns of the injuries are consistent with a heavy fall from a height, landing particularly onto his head and other contacts causing the fracture to the pelvis.” “It would be entirely consistent with the possibility of a fall down a steep slope or off a height. I think it is more likely it all occurred at or about the same time.” Dr Adeley asked if there were any signs of restraint or assault on the body, which the court heard showed signs of decomposition consistent with lying in a hot conditions for several weeks. Dr Shepherd responded: “This is something I considered very carefully. “The patterns of injuries when someone is assaulted or restrained or held or pushed are very different from the types of injuries or patterns I saw with Jay, so I saw nothing to suggest that was the case. “ He said it was not possible to completely rule out a push, as that would not leave a mark, but added there was “nothing to suggest there was an assault, gripping, holding or anything of that sort”. The court also heard toxicology reports found Mr Slater had traces of the recreational drugs MDMA and ******** in his body when he died. Other tests conducted by the Spanish authorities also found traces of ketamine. The month long search generated intense public interest, reflected in Facebook groups about the case with hundreds of thousands of members. 17. Both of my sons took their own lives. But I’m still a mother – they’re just not here anymore Both of my sons took their own lives. But I’m still a mother – they’re just not here anymore For more than 20 years, being a mother was the framework of Yiyun Li’s life. It was what she spent most of her time thinking about: what to feed her sons, how to entertain them when they were younger, and how to guide them as they grew into teenagers. While she would eventually become a novelist, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and a professor of creative writing at Princeton, where she’s taught since 2017, she was always a mother first. “I still am. I just don’t have my children here to be a mother,” says the 52-year-old with quiet acceptance. In 2017, her son Vincent died by suicide, aged 16. Seven years later, in 2024, her younger son, James, also died by suicide, aged 19. They were both found at the same railway spot. Ever since, life for Li has been experienced as a series of “nows”. Time absorbed by one moment after another. Where can we live but days? “I recite the Philip Larkin poem Days to myself nearly every day,” says Li over Zoom. Morning light streams in through the windows behind her, illuminating the spring-green leaves of the trees outside. Nature and its rhythms have been a source of grounding for the writer since she lost both her sons. How does one even begin to talk to a parent about such a terrible loss? It is something Li has thought about a lot. “There’s no good way to say this,” were the words uttered by the police officers on both occasions when they arrived at her home. It was a cliché, but actually Li admits: “I don’t think there’s a better way to say those sentences.” “Words fall short,” is another cliché now familiar to her. There are the bad clichés, too. The crusaders for “silver linings” who told her, “You will reach the end of the tunnel.” “Those are not for the mourning parent. They are platitudes,” she states. To spend time with Li is to sit on the edge of the abyss of her grief. It’s an awkward, but not unpleasant, place to be thanks to her generosity and warm spirit. Li has written a book, Things in Nature Merely Grow, an elegy for the two remarkable sons she lost to suicide. They were close but very different. Vincent was vivid, flamboyant and intelligent. The “feeling” brother. James, the “thinking” one, didn’t draw attention to himself. He spoke eight languages, having taught himself Welsh, *******, Romanian and Russian on top of the Spanish, Italian and Japanese he learnt at school. His phone was set in Lithuanian. However, he was extremely quiet, almost non-verbal. In his senior year at high school, he read the five major works of Wittgenstein, including the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Yiyun Li lost Vincent when he was 16 and James when he was 19 – Dan Callister When someone loses two sons to suicide, there are obvious questions. Human curiosity demands to know how such a terrible tragedy could occur. The unease that suicide creates in others is now very familiar to Li. “Suicide makes people uncomfortable,” she says. “They think someone needs to be blamed. It’s only human nature to say, ‘Those parents must be monsters.’” She speaks from experience. Li and her husband Dapeng have lost friends. Some of the harshest criticism has emanated from her home country of China (she was born in Beijing in 1972 before moving to the States over 25 years ago). Mothers get even more of the blame, says Li: “The urge people have to put me on a moral trial is sad, but fascinating too.” The one question people don’t ask, she has learnt from talking to other parents who have lost their teenage children to suicide, is how much these parents have done for their children. The reality is that Li and her husband provided a safe and stable family environment for their two sons. Far safer than the ones they themselves grew up in. They each had a difficult parent. For Li, the experience of being raised by a physically and emotionally abusive mother meant that she was all too aware how harsh the world can be. By contrast, Vincent and James’s childhoods were cocooned in love. The family travelled: to Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Croatia. The Li parental philosophy was that they would spare nothing to bring the children to see the world. As a society we talk about giving children the tools to live. Now, Li questions whether we have taught children how to suffer and go on living a meaningful life while tolerating those pains. “Even I feel I didn’t teach them well enough how to suffer,” she says. They were both sensitive and unusual children. “People expect children to fall into the norm and I think my children happened to be very different,” explains Li. She recalls taking Vincent to soccer club when he was five years old. A normal thing for a boy his age to do. Vincent, though, had the words to penetrate the moment: “You just want me to be like everybody else.” While the family resisted a formal diagnosis of depression, he struggled with being a teenager. For instance, how cruel a locker room can be for middle-school boys. “He was extremely perceptive and articulate and sensitive and all these things were probably in the end against him,” says Li. “That combination of traits does not necessarily mean the world is going to be kind and accepting.” Meanwhile, James, who had been uncharacteristically talkative with Vincent, and silent with the rest of the world, fell into a more pronounced silence after his brother died. Does Li think he would have taken his own life if Vincent hadn’t died? “My belief is that James would have lived,” she says. “It was a tremendous loss in his life which we could not help. He was closest to his brother. They were best friends.” At the time, she and her husband couldn’t understand quite how deeply he felt the loss. “He was an introvert and did not interact with the world easily.” Regret isn’t something that fits into Li’s world view. Alternatives belong to the world of fiction where characters start out with alternatives at the beginning of a novel and as it progresses, lose those alternatives. “I don’t think that’s how life works,” says Li. “If you say you have regrets, that means we go into the realm of alternatives. What if we signed Vincent up to the soccer club? It’s against my principle to treat life as alternatives.” Still, she admits, “I wish I did this or that” thinking is inevitable for parents who have lost children. For her it is the moment she did not speak to James about a line in Camus’ play Caligula that he read obsessively in the months before he died. “The first line was about suicide and I did not ask him how he felt at the moment.” In the months since, she has chosen a path of radical acceptance. “I let them grow and at some point, they sort of left this world. That’s how I look at it, they made their decision to end their lives. It’s very sad.” Li smiles, but the expression hums with pain. Her wish is that suicide were better understood, that there were less stigma about it being a selfish act. “People who die from suicide, it’s not that they don’t love themselves or the people they leave behind. They are in such extreme pain that there’s no way for them to end that pain except by ending their life.” Li speaks from experience. In 2017, she published Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life, a memoir of her own battle with suicidal depression. Even now, she must protect herself from that path: “One thing I always say is you can be sad and depressed but you cannot be depressed and agitated at the same time. Agitation is not good for people.” Her new framework acts as such a defence. It is one filled with gardening, swimming and taking piano lessons. There are also hours of reading and writing, of course. “I feel exceptionally fortunate that I am a writer. I know people who have been through these things and they don’t have words for,” says Li. “I like the notion of being able to process through my own words.” Loneliness is part of the deal. What she feels is something that only her husband can possibly understand. They have well-intentioned friends who want her to stop feeling sad. And those who can sit with her in her sadness without trying to fix things. “I will feel sad every day for the rest of my life,” she says. But sadness is not unhappiness. She is not a dour person, “heavy like a hippopotamus,” she smiles. “I do take great pleasure in many things, accepting that I feel very sad about my life.” There are visits to the farmers’ market, lunches with friends, where there will be laughter. One question she never asks herself is, “How could this be?” “I have come a long way in life and realise many things are possible. Sometimes, things happen that are inexplicable.” This is her habitat now. “I don’t want to waste my life, time and energy fighting my habitat if sadness is where I am at.” Instead she will remember her sons for who they were. “Both my children had rich inner selves. They had such a deep understanding and feeling about the world. That will not be ended by their deaths. I always remember how they have lived so fully of being themselves.” Things in Nature Merely Grow is published by Fourth Estate at £18.99. Cfoto | Future Publishing | Getty Images Xpeng shares jumped as much as 6% in premarket trading in New York, after the ******** electric vehicle upstart reported first quarter earnings that were ahead of expectations. The stock had pared gains to rise 5.23% at 12:44 p.m. London time. Here’s how Xpeng did in the first quarter versus LSEG estimates: Revenue: 15.81 billion ******** yuan ($2.18 billion), up 141.5% year-on-year and comparing with 15.1 billion yuan expected.Net loss: 660 million yuan, versus a 1.4 billion yuan loss expected and down from 1.37 billion yuan last year. Xpeng said it anticipates second-quarter revenue will come in between 17.5 billion yuan and 18.7 billion yuan, which was also surpassed consensus estimates. The Guangzhou-headquartered firm also said it expects to deliver between 102,000 and 108,000 of its electric cars in the second quarter of this year, representing a year-over-year increase of around 237.7% to 257.5%. Xpeng delivered 94,008 in the first three months of this year. The company contended with a difficult 2023, when it faced slowing growth and mounting losses because of rising competition in China’s electric vehicle market and increasing economic uncertainty in its home market. But the company has been aggressive with new products, launching a mass market car last year and a refreshed version of its flagship X9 in April in 2025, helping to improve its fortunes over the last 18 months or so. That, along with strong deliveries this year, has helped fuel a 66% year-to-date rally in its share price, which has finally helped lift its stock above the $15 per share price that it went public with in 2020. Still, the stock is well off its record high of more than $50 per share hit in October 2021. Xpeng is now facing an even ******* raft of competition from new entrants like Xiaomi and from incumbents like BYD. Still, the company is maintaining momentum. Xpeng delivered 35,045 electric vehicles in April, sustaining its record of putting out more than 30,000 vehicles for the sixth consecutive month. 20. You Could Be Playing Battlefield 6 Playtests Very Soon, Here’s How You Could Be Playing Battlefield 6 Playtests Very Soon, Here’s How The next Battlefield game is currently in development, having undergone very limited playtesting so far. Developer DICE has now announced an invite-only pre-alpha test which begins on May 23 and lasts for just 72 hours. In a post on the BattlefieldComm X page, the developer writes, “As part of our ongoing efforts to test the future of Battlefield, starting May 23, we will run a one-time 72-hour Pre-Alpha Server Performance Test in Europe, North America, and select areas of Asia.” The developer explains the playtest’s purpose is to “verify server performance and stability with increased player counts” during the weekend’s testing *******. There will be a “select group” of maps and modes available to play. After the conclusion of the playtesting *******, all participants will have their game access revoked. To get involved in the playtest, DICE says interested players should sign up for Battlefield Labs via the EA playtesting website. It’s important to note that not everyone who fills out the survey will be selected, since there are a limited number of invites. Anyone that is selected will be under NDA too, so don’t expect to see a whole lot of public information. Despite the NDAs, Battlefield footage has still been leaked though. Battlefield Labs is the name given to the feedback and development process of the next Battlefield game. Earlier this month, DICE shared information on the progress of Battlefield Labs so far, commenting that player participation so far has already enabled the developer to increase stability and balance in many aspects of the game. Battlefield Labs began welcoming players in March with a small number of playtesters being invited. This 72-hour pre-alpha test will therefore see a marked expansion on the number of people getting hands-on with the upcoming game. The new Battlefield will be revealed in full this summer, with DICE estimating a release before March 2026. 21. My favorite gaming headset just got a $106 discount on Amazon ahead of Memorial Day sales My favorite gaming headset just got a $106 discount on Amazon ahead of Memorial Day sales The SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless is the company’s flagship gaming headset, and despite being out for a few years, it’s still competitive with the best gaming headsets out there. In fact, it’s so good that despite owning headsets which are technically better, like the Audeze Maxwell, it’s still my go-to pair of gaming cans. Amazon has discounted this lightweight and comfortable headset by 30%, bringing the total price down to $243.99 for the PC/PS5 version. I’ve personally been using the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro wireless for several years as my main desktop gaming headset, and that’s for a few reasons. Firstly, this headset is incredibly lightweight, making it much more comfortable for usage during longer sessions than rivals, as we noted in our review of the Steelseries flagship gaming headset. Not only that, but the headset also has a light and adjustable headband, with a collapsible microphone, for when you’re not communicating with others. Secondly, there are fantastic quality-of-life features, such as the dual-battery system, which ensures that you never have your headset suddenly die on you in the middle of a game. All you need to do is swap out the batteries, and slot the empty one back into the included base station for charging. The entire process takes like ten seconds, and removes a lot of frustration involved with using wireless peripherals. Thirdly, SteelSeries’s Sonar software has greatly matured over the years, and while in some ways it still remains unintuitive to set up, once you have dialled in your selected profiles, the headset sings. Not only can you set up custom parametric EQ Profiles, you can also split your audio channels in a virtual mixer. This also applies to the microphone, which you can make sound much more professional than the stock configuration, which can almost reach the quality of the Razer Blackshark V2 Pro, thanks to the funky AI wizardry that SteelSeries has rolled out. All of these reasons make the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless my go-to gaming headset, and years later, nothing has managed to dethrone it. It might not offer best-in-class audio quality, or mic quality, but its other features more than make up for those discrepancies. While it first launched it arrived with an eye-watering $349.99 price tag. The discount that Amazon is currently running on it, bringing the price down to $243.99 makes it a no-brainer purchase, especially if you’re after a jack-of-all-trades gaming headset. 25. Supergiant crustaceans could live across half the deep-sea floor Supergiant crustaceans could live across half the deep-sea floor Alicella gigantea, the world’s largest amphipod, may be more common than we had thought Maroni et al./Royal Society Open Science A giant crustacean that resembles a large white shrimp may be far more common across the deep sea than thought, with potential habitat extending over much of the ocean floor. “We have called this species rare for so long. We call everything in the deep sea rare,” says Paige Maroni at the University of Western Australia. “But in actual fact these species are probably more connected than we would have ever expected.” The crustacean, known as Alicella gigantea, has the distinction of being the world’s largest amphipod, growing up to 34 centimetres in length. But this “supergiant”, living on the floor of the deep ocean, hasn’t been easy to find. “Because [the deep sea] is so hard to get to, it’s been undersampled for so long, and we’re finally playing catch up,” says Maroni. She and her colleagues collected 75 records of A. gigantea, stretching back to the first collection of a specimen in 1899. These included finds in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. They also used DNA sequences from specimens across all three oceans to reconstruct genetic relationships among different populations. They found the specimens had been collected from depths ranging from 3890 to 8931 metres. They estimate that about 59 per cent of the sea floor falls within this range. The genetic data also suggested the specimens, although distributed across this vast area, all represented one genetically similar species. Maroni says this implies the crustaceans could live across far more of the ocean floor than sparse collections would suggest. The 59 per cent figure based only on depth is a maximum habitat extent, but is the best available based on the little we know about these creatures.
