  2. Supreme Court backs wild camping on Dartmoor Supreme Court backs wild camping on Dartmoor BBC The legal right to wild camp on Dartmoor has been upheld by the Supreme Court in a decision that is likely to reignite the debate over public access to land in England. Judges unanimously rejected an appeal by landowners Alexander and Diana Darwall who said people should not be able to camp without permission from landowners. The judgement centred on the interpretation of a Dartmoor by-law that states “the public shall have a right of access to the commons on foot and on horseback for the purpose of open-air recreation”. 3. Henry Cavill Thanks His ‘Warhammer Experience’ After Swiss Luxury Watch Brand Collab Henry Cavill Thanks His ‘Warhammer Experience’ After Swiss Luxury Watch Brand Collab Henry Cavill’s love for all things Warhammer 40k is nearly as well known as the actor himself. The franchise is not the only one that the Man of Steel alum has been associated with when it comes to his nerdiness, but it is an integral part of his hobbies and interests. Henry Cavill recently took to his Instagram to post a triumphant picture of how his years of obsession over Warhammer 40,000 mini figurines might finally have come in handy for the actor, as he has collaborated with a Swiss Luxury Watch brand. Warhammer 40,000 is something that has great significance for Henry Cavill Man of Steel || Credit: Warner Bros. In the post that Cavill put on @henrycavill/Instagram, he mentioned that his years and years of experience in handling, assembling, and painting miniatures had finally come in handy, thanks to a Longines workshop that he attended in Switzerland. Henry Cavill has been pretty open about his nerdy hobbies and has often shown off his miniatures (that he has painted himself) on talk shows, his own Instagram, and then some. Warhammer 40K is a science-fantasy, grimdark, space opera offshoot of the Warhammer fantasy series. Given how deeply entrenched Cavill is in interests like this, the actor has managed to become some sort of icon among the nerdy side of the internet. Fans were already endeared to Cavill for his take on Superman, which then served as a gateway for the fans to feel a sense of camaraderie with the actor when it came to his other, decidedly nerdy interests, like World of Warcraft and Warhammer 40 K. Warhammer 40k is currently in the hands of Amazon MGM, who are working with Henry Cavill to adapt the grimdark franchise into a cinematic universe. Cavill announced this project way back when he had decided to quit The Witcher on Netflix so that he could reprise his role as Superman in the DCEU, which in turn got turned upside down due to the decision to reboot the franchise with James Gunn at its helm. The Warhammer 40,000 adaptation is moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios Warhammer 40000: Space Marine || Credit: Relic Entertainment Amazon-MGM has seemingly assembled a room of writers for the Warhammer 40,000 TV show, which was set to move ahead at the studio, as was reported by Deadline. There was a lot of uncertainty about the franchise, given that Amazon Studios had only until December 2024 to work out creative outlines with Games Workshop, or the rights would have returned to the latter. There has been a lot of speculation as to how Henry Cavill might be involved in the franchise, with an obvious choice being to put him in a Space Marine suit somehow. Thanks to the success of Space Marine, there has been a call to have Cavill essay the role of Captain Demetrian Titus. However, given the expansive lore and the vast narrative that the franchise has had, there is actually a slew of characters that Henry Cavill could essay on the silver screen. However, it remains to be seen how that plays out for the actor going forward. 4. Doctors fear risks over firearm law medical assessments Doctors fear risks over firearm law medical assessments Doctors are raising concerns about losing patient trust as opposition grows against tough firearm law reforms. Some West *********** GPs are declining to take part in firearm health assessments to decide whether gun licence holders are physically and mentally fit. They say the state reforms create ethical and professional dilemmas, legal risks and put a strain on doctor-patient relationships. The laws came into effect in late March. They were bolstered in the weeks before they passed parliament in June 2024 after Perth mother Jennifer Petelczyc and her daughter Gretl were murdered by a man searching for his ex-wife. They were shot dead with a handgun at their home by the registered firearms owner before he took his own life. He owned 13 guns The WA opposition has seized on growing concerns over the changes, launching disallowance motions in parliament this week. “Everybody knows we want less guns in the community, but we also support police and doctors who’ve said the current regulations are unworkable,” Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas said on Wednesday. Mr Zempilas rejected assertions the motions would delay the regulations, saying Labor had the numbers in parliament. Police Minister Reece Whitby said the decision to oppose the reforms was “madness” and a risk to public safety. He said the legislation contained legal protection for doctors who undertook assessments. The Royal *********** College of General Practitioners WA said clinical judgments about firearm owners’ physical and mental health presented ethical and professional challenges. “It’s very important that we and our patients have a relationship based on trust, where we and our patients feel we can be honest and transparent with each other,” deputy chair Mariam Bahemia told AAP. Dr Bahemia said GPs were also concerned they could be called to justify a clinical decision in court when a long time has passed or a patient’s circumstances had changed. “GPs feel the weight of this new responsibility,” she said. Some WA Police officers have also reportedly raised concerns about the laws and how the compliance systems to regulate them have been rolled out. 5. Russian missile attack kills Ukrainian servicemen in training Russian missile attack kills Ukrainian servicemen in training KYIV (Reuters) -A Russian missile attack on a Ukrainian military shooting range killed six servicemen and wounded at least 10 more during training on Tuesday, Ukraine’s national guard said on Wednesday, adding that the commander of the unit had been suspended. Russia’s defence ministry had said on Tuesday that the missile attack on the training camp in the Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine near the Russian border killed up to 70 Ukrainian service members, including 20 instructors. The Ukrainian national guard statement said an internal investigation was underway and the necessary information was shared with law enforcement agencies. “The investigation will provide a legal assessment of the actions of all persons who made the relevant decisions,” it said about the attack on the military unit’s shooting range. After previous deadly strikes on military training camps, Ukraine launched investigations into possible negligence. During more than three years of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Moscow’s forces have inflicted casualties in attacks on Ukrainian military educational institutions and various formal outdoor gatherings. 6. Tropical forest loss doubled in 2024 as wildfires rocketed Tropical forest loss doubled in 2024 as wildfires rocketed Forest cleared for mining in the Brazilian Amazon Marcio Isensee e Sá/Getty Images The amount of tropical forest lost in 2024 was double that in 2023 and the highest in at least two decades as climate change made rainforests susceptible to uncontrollable fires. A record 67,000 square kilometres of primary rainforest was lost from the tropics in 2024, according to an annual assessment of satellite imagery by Global Forest Watch and the University of Maryland. Primary forest refers to mature forest that has never been disturbed by logging. The report’s authors attributed the surge in forest loss to the El Niño weather phenomenon and the warming global climate, which made the rainforest a tinderbox. “We are in a new phase where it’s not just clearing for agriculture that’s the main driver [of forest loss],” says Rod Taylor at Global Forest Watch, an initiative of the World Resources Institute. “Now we have this new amplifying effect, which is the real climate change feedback loop, where fires are much more intense and ferocious than they have ever been.” Tropical forests regulate weather systems and store carbon, cooling the planet, but in recent years deforestation has brought them to a tipping point at which they sometimes emit more carbon than they absorb, creating a feedback loop. Five times more primary forest was lost from fires in the tropics in 2024 than in 2023, accounting for 48 per cent of all primary rainforest loss, the report found. Globally, fires caused greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 4.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide last year, more than four times the amount from air travel in 2023. El Niño events are associated with warmer and drier weather in tropical regions. Although El Niño officially subsided in April 2024, its effects continued to be felt as rainforest soils and vegetation remained dried out from scorching temperatures and previous wildfires. The world’s warming climate also played a role, with 2024 the hottest year on record and Brazil’s driest in seven decades, says Ane Alencar at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute in Belém, Brazil. Brazil lost 28,000 km² of primary forest – its highest figure since 2016 – accounting for 42 per cent of all tropical primary forest loss. In the Brazilian Amazon, fires accounted for 60 per cent of forest loss, as people exploited dry conditions to clear land for agriculture. There were also massive wildfires outside the tropics in countries such as Canada and Russia. Globally, the area of forest lost was 300,000 km², another new record. “Some scientists say we’re not in the Anthropocene but the Pyrocene – the age of fire – and I think this report shows that,” says Erika Berenguer at the University of Oxford. While forest fires are concerning, Berenguer cautions that the figures may include degradation, where some of the tree canopy is lost, and this should not be conflated with deforestation, where forest is cleared entirely. “Degradation reduces carbon storage [and] biodiversity and increases vulnerability to future fires, but it’s not the same as transforming land into a soy field or pasture,” she says. The report shows how successive years of degradation and the warming climate have made the rainforest fragile, says Alencar. “Usually with fires in the Amazon, you see degradation, but the forest can recover,” she says. “However, this report shows that when you have a very strong drought it creates the perfect conditions for the forest to burn intensely and you reach a point where the forest is lost entirely.” Topics: Source link #Tropical #forest #loss #doubled #wildfires #rocketed Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  8. Six Ukrainian soldiers killed in Russian missile strike during training exercise Six Ukrainian soldiers killed in Russian missile strike during training exercise A Russian missile strike on a training exercise in Ukraine’s Sumy border region has killed six servicemen and wounded more than 10 others, says Ukraine’s National Guard. Russia’s defence ministry had earlier released a video purporting to show an Iskander missile attack on a training camp, and state news agency Tass said up to 70 people had died. The Sumy region has come under repeated bombardment, and Ukraine launched a months-long occupation of part of Russia’s neighbouring Kursk region from there. The Ukrainian military said the aim of the offensive had been to help create a buffer zone to protect Sumy, but some have complained of the scale of military losses. Separately, the Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had visited officials in Kursk the previous day, in his first visit to the region since Ukrainian forces were pushed out of the region. He met volunteers as well as acting local governor Alexander Khinshtein, and he toured a nearby nuclear power plant, state media reported. The deadly Russian strike on Ukrainian servicemen in Sumy was confirmed early on Wednesday by Ukraine’s National Guard, which said the attack took place while the unit was carrying out exercises at a firing range. The commander was suspended and an official investigation launched, it added. The unverified Russian military video showed dozens of servicemen walking on a path near a wooded area followed by an explosion and a large plume of smoke. Research by BBC Verify showed the training camp was targeted in the far north of the Sumy region, some way south of the Russian border. The attack comes as a heavy blow to the Ukrainian military, and the National Guard said it had previously developed an “algorithm of actions” as well as orders to deal with the threat of air strikes and people gathered in one place. Italy ready to help talks if ******** agrees to Trump war mediation plan Ukraine’s general staff said this week that it had thwarted Russia’s bid to establish a “security zone” in Sumy region, and argued that its Kursk operation had “strategic significance”, forcing Russia to divert its “most capable units” to tackle the offensive. The Kremlin also sent thousands of North Koreans soldiers to the region in a bid to recapture the area. However, last week a battalion commander called Oleksandr Shyrshyn was quoted as criticising the “moronic tasks” set by the military leadership as well as unjustified losses. Hopes of an imminent ceasefire are fading, despite low-level talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul last Friday. Although President Donald Trump suggested the ******** might mediate further talks, the ******** said the idea of hosting, or even mediating talks was more a hope for now than any concrete plan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he expected Russia to present its “broad terms that would allow us to move towards a ceasefire”, however Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia is merely “trying to buy time in order to continue its war and occupation”. Third man charged over fires at homes linked to *** PM Third man charged over fires at homes linked to *** PM A third suspect has been charged with arson over a series of fires targeting property linked to *** Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Petro Pochynok, 34, is charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. The Ukrainian national is scheduled to appear at London’s Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning. Two other men have already been charged with setting fire to Starmer’s personal home, along with a property where he once lived and a car he had sold. They are Ukrainian national Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 26. Lavrynovych and Carpiuc have already appeared in court and were ordered detained until a hearing on June 6. No injuries were reported from the fires, which occurred on three nights in north London between May 8 and May 12. Starmer and his family had moved out of his home after he was elected in July, and they live at the prime minister’s official Downing Street residence. A Toyota RAV4 that Starmer once owned was set ablaze on May 8 – just down the street from his house. The door of an apartment building where the politician once lived was set on fire on May 11, and on May 12 the doorway of Starmer’s home was charred after being set ablaze. Counterterrorism detectives led the investigation because it involves the prime minister. Starmer called the fires “an attack on all of us, on democracy and the values that we stand for”. 10. This Might Be Your Last Chance to Buy a V-8-Powered Lexus Sedan This Might Be Your Last Chance to Buy a V-8-Powered Lexus Sedan “Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.” Lexus has always been quiet about its sport sedan heritage, but the Japanese automaker has long been battling alongside BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the quest to perfect the four-door rocket. But that time is coming to an end, it seems. Lexus is being coy about what is next for the IS-series of sedans, but the phrasing of the name makes us fairly certain that the newly revealed IS 500 Ultimate Edition means something. Launched as a limited edition, special-production version of the V8-powered IS 500, the Ultimate Edition appears to commemorate the years of eight-cylinder sport sedans before it — and feels something like a final send-off. Lexus Mechanically, the IS 500 chassis and powerplant remains unchanged, sporting a 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE V-8 engine with 472 hp and 395-lb-ft of torque. Adaptive suspension, 6-piston Brembo brakes, and 19-inch forged alloy BBS wheels also remain. The majority of the changes for the Ultimate Edition are cosmetic; specifically, matte gray-****** paint is applied to every body panel, adding the color of “Wind” to the sedan. Other new features of the IS 500 Ultimate Edition include a Circuit Red and ****** interior, complete with NuLuxe and Ultrasuede seats, plus an LFA-inspired steering wheel and shift knob. Red seatbelts add another sporty touch to the cabin while an 8.0-inch infotainment display reminds everyone that this generation of IS is nearly 13 years old. Mack Hogan We’re not one to speculate too much here at Road & Track, but we can’t help analyzing the phrasing associated with the IS 500 Ultimate Edition. Lexus is calling it “the culmination of greatness,” suggesting that something will be finished with the Ultimate Edition model. Is that the IS 500 and its V8? Or is that the whole IS lineup? What does this mean for its RC coupe sibling? We’re not exactly sure just yet. Total sales of the IS-series sedan top 1.3 million units since its inception with the IS 300 in 1999, but more modern sales figures paint a picture of a sedan in its twilight years. Lexus says it will only build 500 units of the Ultimate Edition sedan. Pricing and production details have yet to be announced, but we’re sure this special edition IS 500 sedan will rise well above the regular model’s $60,595 sticker price. Either way, be on the lookout for more news around the future of Lexus’s middleweight rear-wheel-drive sedan. Victoria, who was 28, was the mother of Hamish, who in January 2018 was the first polar bear cub to be born in the *** in 25 years. Her keepers at RZSS’ Highland Wildlife Park said she had been receiving geriatric care, and the decision to end her life on Tuesday was taken on the advice of vets. Victoria had shared an enclosure at the park, near Aviemore, with her second cub Brodie, aged three. The Highland Wildlife Park also has two adult male bears, 16-year-old Walker and Arktos, who is 17 and is the father of Hamish and Brodie. Hamish was moved in 2020 to Doncaster’s Yorkshire Wildlife Park Resort, where he is one of six polar bears. Polar bears can live into their early 30s, but survive an average of 15 to 18 years in the wild. Victoria’s keepers said 28 was the equivalent of her being in her 90s in human years. RZSS said in December that keepers had noticed Victoria was struggling to keep up with Brodie. Her specialist care included medication to give her relief from joint pain. Victoria’s diet included cod liver oil, lard, salmon oil and oily fish like sardines, mackerel and salmon. The food was given in an attempt to achieve the benefits she would have enjoyed from eating seals in the wild. RZSS/Siân Addison Hamish was born in 2018 RZSS Victoria with Hamish before her cub was moved to a zoo in Doncaster The RZSS said: “We are sad to share the loss of Victoria, the ***’s oldest polar bear, who was experiencing age-related health problems and had been receiving geriatric care. “Taking into account her quality of life and wellbeing, our wildlife conservation charity’s vets advised that Victoria should be put to sleep.” It added: “She leaves an incredible legacy through her cubs who play an essential role in the European breeding programme, which ensures a healthy and genetically diverse population of these bears living in human care.” Victoria was born in 1996 at Rostock Zoo in Germany and had previously given birth at Aalborg Zoo in Denmark in 2008. While at Aalborg she gave birth to a female cub called Malik. She arrived at RZSS’ Highland Wildlife Park in March 2015. 13. Airbnb: Long-Term Growth Stays Intact Despite Spain’s Crackdown on Rentals Airbnb: Long-Term Growth Stays Intact Despite Spain’s Crackdown on Rentals Airbnb (NASDAQ:) shares dropped over 3% on Tuesday as Spain ordered the removal of 65,000 rental listings from the platform, citing violations of tourist accommodation regulations. This regulatory action comes amid growing anti-tourism sentiment in popular Spanish destinations, adding pressure to the company’s European operations. Spain shuts down 65,000 Airbnb Rentals The Spanish government has ordered Airbnb to remove approximately 65,000 property listings from its platform, representing a significant regulatory blow to the vacation rental company in one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. According to Spain’s Consumer Rights Ministry, the targeted listings violated various regulations, primarily failing to include proper license numbers or not specifying whether the owner was operating as an individual or corporation. The crackdown gained legal traction when a Madrid court ruled that Airbnb must immediately withdraw 5,800 of these properties, with decisions on the remaining 60,000 listings still pending. Consumer Rights Minister Pablo Bustinduy framed the action as a necessary step to end what he called the “lack of control” and “illegality” in the holiday rental sector, stating emphatically: “No more excuses. Enough with protecting those who make a business out of the right to housing in our country.” The government’s move represents part of a broader effort to address Spain’s housing crisis, with officials increasingly targeting short-term rentals as a factor driving up housing costs for local residents. The intervention comes against a backdrop of housing becoming Spaniards’ primary concern, with average rental prices having doubled over the past decade while salaries failed to keep pace. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently stated that “there are too many Airbnbs and not enough homes,” pledging to prevent the “uncontrolled” expansion of properties used for tourism. Airbnb has responded defiantly, announcing it will appeal the decision and arguing that the ministry lacks proper authority over short-term rentals. The company maintains that the government failed to provide evidence-based identification of non-compliant accommodations and noted that some of the targeted listings are seasonal rentals not subject to tourism regulations. Airbnb cited a 2022 Spanish Supreme Court ruling that placed responsibility for listing information with individual hosts rather than the platform itself, which it described as a “neutral intermediary.” The company further argued that regulating its operations won’t solve Spain’s housing challenges, claiming “the root cause of the affordable housing crisis in Spain is a lack of supply to meet demand.” This regulatory clash coincides with intensifying anti-tourism sentiment across Spain, with thousands protesting in the Canary Islands on Sunday under the slogan “Canaries have a limit.” Similar demonstrations are planned in Majorca for June 15 by a group called “Less Tourism, More Life.” The backlash against mass tourism is growing as Spain approaches 100 million annual foreign visitors, having hosted 94 million in 2024 (a 13% increase from the previous year). Local governments are also taking independent action, with Barcelona’s city council announcing plans to eliminate all 10,000 short-term tourist apartments by the end of 2028. Airbnb Stock Slides Amid Regulatory Uncertainty in Spain Airbnb stock (ABNB) was trading at $132.46 as of 10:16 AM EDT on Tuesday, down sharply by $4.14 or 3.03% from the previous close of $136.60. The stock opened at $133.75 and has traded within a day range of $132.16 to $134.60, showing moderate volatility amid the negative news from Spain. Trading volume has reached 1,426,176 shares, still below the average daily volume of 5,806,721, suggesting that while the news has impacted the share price, it hasn’t triggered extraordinarily heavy selling pressure. The stock’s performance metrics present a mixed picture across different timeframes. Year-to-date, Airbnb shares have eked out a modest gain of 0.80%, slightly underperforming the S&P 500’s 1.04% rise over the same *******. More concerning for investors is the one-year performance, with ABNB down 9.50% while the broader market has gained 11.95%. The three-year return shows stronger performance at +17.69%, though this still significantly trails the ’s +52.32% over the same *******. The five-year picture is similarly underwhelming, with Airbnb down 9.27% compared to the S&P 500’s nearly 100% gain, though this timeframe includes the company’s 2020 IPO and the challenging pandemic ******* for travel companies. From a valuation perspective, the stock trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 34.67 and a forward P/E of 31.35, reflecting the premium investors are willing to pay for the company’s growth potential despite regulatory headwinds. The company maintains solid profitability metrics with a 22.60% profit margin and trailing twelve-month revenue of $11.23 billion with net income of $2.54 billion. Airbnb’s balance sheet appears strong with $11.49 billion in cash and a relatively modest debt-to-equity ratio of 28.73%, providing financial flexibility as it navigates regulatory challenges in key markets. Wall Street maintains a cautious outlook on the stock, with a consensus price target of $139.33, suggesting limited upside potential of approximately 5% from current levels. The company is expected to report its next quarterly earnings between August 4-8, 2025, with analysts forecasting earnings per share of $0.93. Technical analysts note that the stock is now trading below all major moving averages, with the breaking of support at $135 potentially opening the door to further declines toward the $130 level if negative sentiment persists around regulatory risks in key markets like Spain. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. WATCH | Iranian spokesperson discusses possibility of renewing relations with Canada: “I think it’s for Canada to decide what course of action they want to take,” said Baghaei. “I think the first step they have to take is to unravel the many sanctions and restraints that they have imposed on themselves and on our bilateral relations.” That’s deemed unlikely by experts and ********* diplomats. Ottawa severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012. The government of then prime minister Stephen Harper cited the Islamic Republic’s perceived ambition for a nuclear weapon, its support for the dictatorship of the since ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as well as persistent human rights abuses. Recent efforts aimed at restoring talks between Washington and Tehran over a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions has raised hopes among ordinary Iranians longing for an end to their country’s isolation and economic pain. Some Iranians hope Canada will return “We have many difficulties for the exports because of these [sanctions] that these Western countries made to us,” said Rasoul Namavari. The businessman just bought the building that used to house the former ********* Embassy in Tehran and is now basing his paper company there. He was happy to show off renovation work and point out the last remaining Maple Leaf attached to one of the windows at the former embassy. Iranian businessman Rasoul Namavari is the new owner of the building that was once home to Canada’s Embassy in Iran. When workers forgot to remove a maple leaf that adorned the windows, Namavari decided it should stay. (Stephanie Jenzer/CBC) “We kept that one as the heritage of the old days,” he said. Canada leased the building starting in 1974, five years before the Islamic Revolution, right through to 2014. That seems to imply that Canada was still hedging its bets on whether to return for at least a couple of years. Namavari would like to see Canada re-open an embassy in Iran, albeit not in the building he just bought. “[We hope] that the Canada government returns, and they open the doors for the Iranian families [who] want to visit their families.” There are an estimated 300,000 Iranian Canadians. Friends and relatives in Iran who want to visit their families in Canada have to travel abroad to Turkey or other countries to obtain a visa. Though Namavari notes he’s not a politician, the business owner believes Iran and America will reach an agreement. That’s a view shared by some analysts who say hits to Iran’s regional allies — including the weakening of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the fall of Syria’s Assad — have left it vulnerable and more in need of a nuclear deal than ever in the face of U.S. and Israeli military threats. But those working for democratic change in Iran worry about the possibility that improved relations with the West — however slight — could prolong the life of Iran’s theocracy, rather than weaken or reform it. Khosro Malek, an Iranian businessman whose daughter, Maryam, was killed when Flight PS752 was shot down shortly after takeoff from Tehran in January 2020, is demanding Canada initiate a criminal investigation into the downing of the flight. (Submitted to CBC News) Relatives of PS752 passengers demand justice Khosro Malek is a man whose life is drenched in a loss that fuels his determination to speak on the record with a foreign news organization, despite the potential risk. Malek’s daughter, Maryam, was killed in January 2020, when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired two missiles at Ukrainian passenger flight PS752 just six minutes after it took off from the Tehran airport. He describes her as an “extraordinarily kind and warm-hearted person” who devoted much of her time to helping those in need. Maryam Malek was on her way back to Canada where she was studying for a master’s degree in finance at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. Flight PS752 passenger Maryam Malek was on her way back to Canada where she was studying for a master’s degree in finance at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. (Submitted to CBC News) “We are people whose loved ones left this world in the most distressing way possible,” he told CBC News in an interview. “Whatever remained of them was then crushed under the bulldozer tracks and by the authorities who had come to recover the remains of our loved ones.” All 176 people on board were killed. Of the 167 passengers, 138 were travelling to Canada via Ukraine, including 55 ********* citizens and 30 permanent residents. Iran initially denied responsibility, before admitting it and blaming human error. Like other relatives of those on board, Malek believes the plane was either targeted or knowingly endangered to “divert” American retaliation after Iran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. troops based in Iraq. In other words, he believes it was used as a human shield. The plane went down just days after Iranian Maj.-Gen. Qasem Soleimani was killed by a U.S. drone in Iraq. Many family members of those on Flight PS752 have reported being harassed and intimidated by Iranian authorities. WATCH | Families of PS752 passengers say they face intimidation in Iran: “I get a phone call and am told that I mustn’t speak,” said Malek. “Whenever we hold our anniversary ceremonies, we find ourselves surrounded by security forces.” Malek and other family members have petitioned the International Criminal Court to start an investigation into the downing of the plane as a possible war crime. He is bitterly disappointed with Canada for failing to back them. Downing of flight used as ‘political leverage,’ Iran says There is no doubt the circumstances surrounding the downing of the passenger plane remain highly sensitive for Iranian authorities. On the ground, CBC News was discouraged from asking Iranian officials about it. But we did raise it with Baghaei, the foreign ministry spokesperson, in a one-on-one interview after the broader media briefing. Search and rescue workers carry a body from the ****** site near Tehran’s International Airport where the flight was downed on Jan. 8, 2020. All 176 passengers and crew on board were killed. (Javad/Middle East Images/AFP/Getty Images) He said things would have been easier if Canada and Iran had had diplomatic relations at the time. “That would give the opportunity to both countries to talk together instead of resorting to other means of settlement of this issue,” he said. Canada is seeking to hold Iran accountable for the downing of the plane via a joint claim at the International Court of Justice in The Hague with Sweden, Britain and Ukraine. Iran has since made a counter-claim. Baghaei accused Canada of being “unhelpful” from the very beginning. “And the fact that this issue was used — or to use the correct word, abused — by Canada and others as a political leverage against Iran, that was really not helpful.” “Most of the people who lost their lives, they’re Iranians,” he said. “And we were so much saddened by the incident. “I think what we need to do is to come back to respectful talks in order to see what has happened to our relations for the past two or three decades.” WATCH | 5 years after downing of Flight PS752, families still have questions: Malek says restoring ties with Iran will change nothing in a country he says treats civilians as if they were “sandbags on the frontlines of a war.” For him, there will be no justice for Maryam, or the others who were killed, without fundamental changes to Iran’s political system. “Not only were they deprived of their right to life, but we the bereaved,” he said. “Those left behind have also been denied our right to live. We can never be happy again.” Source link #Iran #ready #talks #renewing #relations #Canada #Ottawa #1st #move Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

With 6-8ft conditions pumping at the iconic slab wave about 700m north of Main Break, Hawaiian Mamiya paddled out before dawn on Wednesday to watch local guru Jack Robinson free surfing the break he knew so well. “I hadn’t surfed there in two or three years,” Mamiya said, adding he’s maybe only been out two or three times total. “I knew Jack was out because he was sending some videos in the group chat early, early. And I was like, ‘I’m going to go out there and watch him’. “I sat in the channel and I just watched him for like an hour. I was kind of just watching where he was taking off and what he was doing, and the waves that he wanted, and once I did that I got a good idea. “Obviously he’s one of the best barrel riders out there.” The last-minute study session paid off immediately when round-of-16 heats resumed at the World Surf League Margaret River Pro later that morning. It is a different challenge, a less nerve-wracking and less stressful one and more like a really exciting opportunity to get a good barrel.” Earlier, American Griffin Calapinto rode one of the waves of the day, emerging from the foam of a deep barrel and raising his arm in amazement before scoring a 9.00 on his way to beating *********** wild-card Mikey McDonagh. “I feel like that is one of the best heats of my life,” he said. “Getting barrelled in the jersey is the dream. “That 9.00, I was kind of baffled myself. 19. ‘Had to do a double take’ ‘Had to do a double take’ A trail camera in Pike County, Illinois, captured images of a mountain lion strolling through a field, marking just the 11th confirmed sighting in the state since 2002, reported the Jacksonville Journal-Courier. The impressive footage, recorded by resident Brent Jordan, shows the large carnivore moving confidently through the area. Jordan discovered the surprising visitor while reviewing his trail camera images. “Nothing unusual to have 100, 200 pictures a day to go through, randomly scrolled through to see what’s on the camera, and then … we got something a little different on the camera. Scrolling through and had to do a double take and back and forth, and we found our new friend,” he told Quincy television station KHQA, per the Journal-Courier. You can help protect these magnificent creatures by reporting sightings to conservation officers and maintaining a respectful distance. Mountain lions, also known as pumas or cougars, are protected by Illinois law, meaning they cannot be hunted or harassed unless they threaten people or property. Trail cameras like Jordan’s help experts track endangered species populations without disturbing natural behaviors. When you install trail cameras on your property, you can contribute valuable data that helps wildlife managers make informed decisions about conservation efforts. The return of apex predators to their historic ranges can help restore natural balance to ecosystems. For you and your community, this balance translates to healthier forests, better watershed protection, and more sustainable wildlife populations that support outdoor recreation opportunities. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? “It’s neat to see these guys here, but their existence while they’re in Illinois is dependent on how people act around it,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources district wildlife biologist Stefanie Fitzsimons, per the Journal-Courier. 21. School bus blast in Balochistan kills at least five people School bus blast in Balochistan kills at least five people A school bus explosion in Pakistan’s Balochistan region has killed at least five people and injured dozens. The bus was carrying around 40 school children when it exploded at about 07:40 local time (02:40 GMT) just outside the remote town of Khuzdar, police told the BBC. Three of the five people killed are children, police said. Pictures circulating on social media show the charred wreckage of a large bus, with backpacks scattered around it. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far, but Balochistan, a turbulent province in the country’s south west, has long been plagued by a long-standing insurgency and human rights violations. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the incident as “sheer barbarism”, calling the attackers “beasts who target children” in an attempt to destabilise the country. The country’s military has accused neighbouring India and its proxies in Balochistan of orchestrating the explosion, though there is no evidence of this. Pakistan and India are just emerging from a deadly two-week conflict sparked by a militant attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan denied involvement in those attacks, but India followed up with a series of strikes on sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Earlier in March, some 21 civilians and four military personnel were killed during a train siege in Balochistan’s remote Sibi district. That attack was carried out by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group that has waged a decades-long insurgency to gain independence. Pakistani authorities, as well as several Western countries, including the *** and US, have designated the BLA as a terrorist organisation. The country’s military has also previously accused it of being an “Indian proxy” – a claim that the BLA has rejected. But Baloch activists have also accused Pakistan’s security forces of its own atrocities. They say thousands of ethnic Baloch people have been disappeared by Pakistan’s security forces in the last two decades – allegedly detained without due legal process, or abducted, tortured and killed in operations against a decades-old separatist insurgency. 22. Putin visits Kursk for first time since Ukraine ejected Putin visits Kursk for first time since Ukraine ejected President Vladimir Putin visited Russia’s Kursk region for the first time since Moscow said it drove out Ukrainian forces from the area in April, the Kremlin says. Putin visited the western region bordering Ukraine the previous day, according to the Kremlin on Wednesday. Ukrainian forces made a surprise incursion into Kursk in August 2024 in one of its biggest battlefield successes in the more than three-year war. The incursion was the first time Russian territory was occupied by an invader since World War II and dealt a humiliating blow to the Kremlin. Since the end of 2023, Russia has mostly had the advantage on the battlefield, with the exception of Kursk. Ukraine, the US and South Korea said that North Korea sent up to 12,000 troops to help the Russian army take back control of Kursk, and Russia said on April 26 that its forces had pushed out the Ukrainian army. Kyiv officials denied the claim. Putin visited Kursk Nuclear Power Plant-2, which is under construction, and spoke at a closed meeting with selected volunteers. He also told acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein that the Kremlin supported the idea of continuing monthly payments to displaced families that still could not return to their homes. Disgruntled residents had previously shown their disapproval over a lack of compensation in rare organised protests. Russia’s defence ministry said its air defences shot down 159 Ukrainian drones across the country overnight, including 53 over the Oryol region and 51 over the Bryansk region. 25. S&P 500 Could Extend Gains if Macro Risks Ease in Second Half of 2025 S&P 500 Could Extend Gains if Macro Risks Ease in Second Half of 2025 S&P 500 saw its six-day winning streak end amidst rising US yields and concerns over Trump’s tax cut proposals and US debt. The “Magnificent 7” stocks are currently underperforming but could potentially drive a larger S&P 500 recovery in the second half of 2025. Technical analysis indicates bullish momentum for the S&P 500, although a recent pullback suggests potential for a bearish correction. The struggled today as US yields rose and markets await a crucial vote in Washington, DC, over US President Trump’s tax cut proposals. Trump visited Capitol Hill on Tuesday to urge Republican lawmakers to agree on a bill that would extend the 2017 tax cuts from his first term, among other measures. Investors are concerned that this bill could increase the U.S. budget deficit faster than expected. On Friday, Moody’s Investors Service downgraded the U.S. credit rating, adding to worries about the country’s growing debt. Source: LSEG Markets do appear to have shrugged off the Moody’s downgrade, with yesterday’s rally hinting at such. Markets are also waiting on comments from Federal Reserve officials scheduled for later today as uncertainty around US monetary policy decisions continues to linger. The S&P 500 is on a six-day winning streak, but for the year thus far, the magnificent seven stocks have underperformed. As markets eye a ******* recovery, will the ‘mag 7’ stocks be the catalyst? Magnificent 7 2025 Performance YTD The magnificent 7 stocks still have some catching up to do in comparison to the rest of the index. This is actually a welcome change given last year’s concern that the Mag 7 had been the driving force of the rally over the last 24 months or so. The change in market dynamics has seen market participants spread their exposure around this year and pivot to other sectors. The interesting question, though, is if the Mag 7 stocks post a good recovery in the second half of 2025, will this drag the S&P to fresh all-time highs? Now obviously, this would depend on a lot of variables but it does require a closer look. A recent Bloomberg survey revealed Wall Street strategists have mixed views regarding the end of year target for the S&P 500. According to the survey, the median S&P 500 year-end target is 5,900 for 2025, but the forecasts range widely from 5,200 to 7,007, reflecting significant divergent market views. This is a definite possibility but there are a host of variables that are in play. These estimates could change pretty drastically as the year progresses, we have already seen some drastic changes to global forecasts on a host of asset classes in 2025. This rollercoaster is one I expect may continue. Technical Analysis – S&P 500 From a technical standpoint, the S&P 500 on the weekly timeframe enjoyed a bullish week last week. The new week has started somewhat more cautiously but bulls still appear to be holding the upper hand. The *******-14 RSI reinforces this as it remains above the neutral 50 handle which suggests bullish momentum remains intact. Tuesday daily candle close did however, snap a six-day winning streak with the S&P closing as an imperfect hanging man candlestick. This is usually a sign of a bearish correction which may concern bulls looking at intraday moves. S&P 500 Weekly Chart, May 20, 2025 Source: TradingView Dropping down to a four-hour chart (H4), the S&P 500 index has been staircasing its way higher since bottoming out on April 7, 2025. More recent price action shows that bulls remain in control following a series of higher highs and higher lows. However, Tuesday’s session did see a significant pullback toward support at 5910 before bouncing higher once more. For now, the bullish structure remains intact with a four-hour candle close below the 5883 handle needed to invalidate the bullish momentum. Until then, the chances of another higher high remain strong, but this will obviously hinge on market sentiment remaining positive.
