  4. ‘It’s not always due to a lack of business’ says ACCI chief as Strandbags and Levi’s to close at Albany Plaza ‘It’s not always due to a lack of business’ says ACCI chief as Strandbags and Levi’s to close at Albany Plaza Albany Plaza is losing two more shops, with Strandbags and Levi’s Coffee Cup closing two months after Jeanswest shut its doors for good. The Jeanswest store closed in March when parent company Harbour Guidance entered voluntary administration. Strandbags’ last day of trading is May 28, according to store manager Ronnie Davies who posted about the closure on Facebook. “I can’t believe we are closing; myself and my staff are devastated,” she wrote on social media. She told the Advertiser she believed her store was profitable and it was a lease issue which caused the company to pull out. The Advertiser understands Levi’s Coffee Cup closed on May 19. Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO Tracey Bridges said it was sad when businesses exited. “While changes in tenancy are a natural part of the business world, it’s always sad when the exit has been prompted by non-growth related outcomes,” she said. “Times are tough at the moment but it’s not always due to a lack of business. “Hard leases, restrictions on the variations of operations and the retreat of some of the ******* operators from the region also impact business in Albany. “That being said, we do have the privilege of living in a smaller, more connected community so the chance of being able to get a face-to-face meeting to discuss options with landlords and regulators is much higher than in the city. “We can support each other in so many different ways.” Albany Plaza is owned by real estate investment trust Charter Hall, who did not respond to a request for comment. The Advertiser also reached out to Strandbags, who did not respond. The owner of Levi’s Coffee Cup declined to comment. 5. Qualcomm gambled on repeating its own ads at Computex, but did it pay off? Qualcomm gambled on repeating its own ads at Computex, but did it pay off? When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Getty Images As predicted, Qualcomm’s Computex Keynote focused more on AI and AI-powered features on the Windows on Arm ecosystem rather than new announcements. Qualcomm is turning 40 this year, but as CEO Cristiano Amon stated, “it’s a new Qualcomm,” thanks to the company’s investment in computing. Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon X series at Computex last year, but despite that timeline, Qualcomm’s Computex presence did not revolve around chip announcements. Essentially: Qualcomm spent the entire 60 minute keynote dodging around the rumors of the second Snapdragon X Series chip generation to instead focus on their often-repeated performance claims, new systems, and Windows on Arm ecosystem updates. At a rather slim Computex for computing news, this could have been a moment for Qualcomm to shine with the second gen of it’s Arm chips. Instead the company chose to gamble and focus on its partnerships with various manufacturers including Microsoft. But, did Qualcomm’s gamble pay off? Snapdragon X Series updates Credit: Future | Madeline Ricchiuto Qualcomm now has 1,400 games optimized for Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. The company showed footage of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on a Snapdragon X Elite system, though its uncertain whether the game will play smoothly across all of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series. Qualcomm showcased a lot of early gaming performance on the Snapdragon X Elite chipset on custom hardware, running on 80W systems that were never released to the public. Considering that history, it’s hard to take Qualcomm’s announcements at face value. Qualcomm and Epic Games will also be bringing Fortnite to Windows on Arm, which makes sense considering Qualcomm announced Snapdragon support for Epic Games Online Easy Anti-Cheat back in March. Qualcomm has reached 9% market share in the laptop market, thanks to a large portfolio of devices, including newly launched computes like the new Acer Aspire 14 and 16 AI, HP OmniBook 5, and new Microsoft Surface Pro 11-inch and Microsoft Surface Laptop 13-inch. Amon also shared statistics on Snapdragon’s performance compared to Intel’s Core Ultra 7 processor. But this is a skewed comparison from the jump. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite is a 12-core chipset while the Intel Core Ultra 7 256V is a mid-range 8-core CPU. And some of the comparisons were calculated on specific workloads like DaVinci Resolve’s SuperScale FHD to 4K upscaling technology. Amon also repeated the claim that Snapdragon has “leading performance on an SoC in the laptop ecosystem.” While this was true during the Snapdragon X Elite launch cycle, it has been overturned by recent launches from AMD, Apple, and Intel. Windows on Arm updates Credit: Qualcomm Qualcomm has also expanded its portfolio of applications to include the top 200 most-used Windows apps into the Windows on Arm ecosystem. Part of this is thanks to Microsoft’s new Prism emulation software which helps alleviate the key pain-point of Windows on Arm. However, there are still limits to Prism emulation and the Windows on Arm ecosystem. After all, what are those 200 applications? And are they actually the most-used apps? Qualcomm makes this claim based on data from Microsoft that was collected by snapshots of aggregated app usage data as of August 2024 on Copilot+ PCs. Of course, the problem with that data is that in August 2024, only Snapdragon X systems were in the Copilot+ ecosystem. AMD and Intel’s AI PC chips didn’t get rolled into Copilot+ until the end of 2024. So it’s a bit of a skewed sample set. As always with Qualcomm’s claims, Amon’s claims are technically correct, but the real context is always in the details Qualcomm doesn’t share. That said, Qualcomm has put in some serious work to fill out the Windows on Arm ecosystem. Just over a year ago, the Windows on Arm software ecosystem was almost unusably bare. That is no longer the case. But if you need a highly specialized application, it may not run on Windows on Arm, even emulated. Some key examples are the Autodesk suite, Parsec, and Adobe DreamWeaver and Substance 3DStager. In fact, despite Qualcomm’s partnership with Adobe, the only applications that run natively on Snapdragon are Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom. Other applications like Illustrator and After Effects are expected to make it onto Snapdragon platforms, but are still not available through emulation yet. Qualcomm deserves recognition for the work done to build up an ecosystem. But it will still be years before Windows on Arm can even come close to the level of app-support you find on x86 systems. Cristiano Amon: Q&A Credit: Future | Madeline Ricchiuto Cristiano took questions during the keynote from audience submissions and had them spoken aloud by a Snapdragon AI PC. So these questions ranged from AI for business to a hybrid future that combines computing, AI, automotive, and mobile ecosystems. Because these questions were collected from the whole keynote audience including Qualcomm staff, guests, OEM partners, and Computex industry attendees, many fed straight into Qualcomm’s usual marketing stance about Snapdragon X Series performance and Qualcomm’s view of a hybrid future. The most interesting statement from Amon during this segment was “I’m very bullish about smart glasses” and the future of AR and how it will evolve with AI PCs and better smartphones to augment our lives. Amon also took questions from press and analysts after the keynote to expand on Qualcomm’s portfolio from data center to DragonWing to robotics. “Robotics is natural to Qualcomm,” Amon said. Claiming robotics will be a big market for Qualcomm similar to the automotive market. As robots require a high degree of performance and strong battery life, and “that’s our DNA.” As for the future of the Oryon CPU cores behind the Snapdragon X Series processors, Amon would only enthuse “the CPU team is very busy,” and that those interested in the future of Qualcomm’s computing portfolio should “come to Snapdragon Summit, you’re going to like what you’re going to see.” What’s next Qualcomm sees the future of computing as a hybrid environment between computers and smartphones, where one is an extension of the other. This view of the future colors everything Amon and Qualcomm’s OEM partners discussed at Computex. However, is it an accurate view of the future? You can already access your smartphone data on your laptop in the Windows and macOS ecosystems. While there are differences in functionality, with some combinations working better than others. But phone to computer communication has been in the works for years now. In fact, I distinctly remember crashing my 2010 MacBook Pro by adding macOS X Mavericks on it to control my iPhone from my laptop back in 2013. While Amon is also bullish about on-device AI features with Snapdragon, Apple, AMD, Nvidia, and Intel are also pushing the same development. So it’s hardly a unique feature to Snapdragon systems. To support this dream, Qualcomm is entering the commercial and data center spaces in the future. As for the highly anticipated Snapdragon X Elite Gen 2, it seems Qualcomm is holding all details on that chip for Snapdragon Summit in the fall. 8. Europa League final: Manchester United and Tottenham meet in out-of-form final Europa League final: Manchester United and Tottenham meet in out-of-form final BBC Sport senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel and chief football news reporter Simon Stone, who will both be at San Mames for the final, have had their say on whose season has been worse. Mokbel on Spurs: “Underperformed, underachieved, unacceptable. Domestically, at least. “While Tottenham will cling on to hope of somehow turning a catastrophic season into a historic one, there can be no running away from the fact that results and performances have been largely disastrous. “Twenty-one defeats in the Premier League and counting. Of course, all that will be forgotten if Spurs lift the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night. “Whether that is enough to keep Ange Postecoglou in a job, however, is the million-dollar question with all the indications pointing towards the *********** departing regardless of the outcome in Bilbao. “The fact Postecoglou’s tenure in north London looks set to end imminently illustrates just how pitiful their domestic campaign has been. “In their defence, injuries have debilitated Tottenham’s season. They have lost key players for long periods of time. “But this is an expensively-assembled Tottenham squad – one that includes the club-record £65m signing of Dominic Solanke. “United are in a season of transition, having changed managers midway through the season. “It’s different for Tottenham. Following Postecoglou’s encouraging first season in charge, in which Spurs finished fifth, this was a team set up to compete for Champions League qualification. “Instead, they could finish one place above the relegation zone. That’s undeniably poor.” Stone on United: “Manchester United have been worse because much of the damage has been self-inflicted. “United were the ones who reflected on Erik ten Hag’s tenure, both in the wake of their 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace last May, then after the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, and decided to stick with him. “United gave him money to spend, specifically on Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee in the summer, then sacked him after nine games. “And United told Ruben Amorim he had to start immediately, not wait until the summer to join from Sporting. “Now, the safety net is Bilbao and then that United hit the ground running at the start of next season, which would justify the refusal to wait for Amorim. “But, in the here and now, United have been woeful. “There have been periods in games when they have looked fluid and their passing triangles have worked. “However, Rasmus Hojlund has not looked a threat at one end of the field and basic mistakes have undermined them at the other. “With six minutes left of extra time in their Europa League quarter-final against 10-man Lyon, it was not easy to strike a single optimistic note on United’s behalf. Somehow, they rescued themselves. “Since then, United have got one point from five Premier League games. No-one has done worse than that. “By any measure, this is United’s worst season since the 1973-74 relegation campaign. And they announced financial losses of £113.2m last September. “To spend so much and be so bad really takes some doing.” Source link #Europa #League #final #Manchester #United #Tottenham #meet #outofform #final Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  10. Tennessee death row inmate Oscar Franklin Smith chooses last meal ahead of execution Tennessee death row inmate Oscar Franklin Smith chooses last meal ahead of execution Tennessee death row inmate Oscar Franklin Smith picked his last meal ahead of his scheduled execution, the Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed. Smith, 75, is to die by lethal injection on May 22 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Smith requested hotdogs, tater tots and apple pie with vanilla ice cream for his last meal, TDOC spokesperson Dorinda Carter confirmed May 19. More: Oscar Franklin Smith execution set for May 22: What to know about case, new protocol The meal will be delivered to him the night before the planned execution, and must be eaten by midnight, according to the new protocol. Death row inmates typically get $20 toward a special meal before they are executed. Smith, 75, was convicted in 1990 of ******* in the October 1989 killings of his estranged wife, 35-year-old Judy Robirds Smith, and her sons from a previous marriage, 16-year-old Chad Burnett and 13-year-old Jason Burnett. Thursday’s planned execution is the fourth date scheduled for Smith. The Tennessee Department of Correction rescheduled two dates during the pandemic, and Gov. Bill Lee issued a temporary reprieve about an hour before the third in April 2022. That repreive, due to what was described as an oversight in the lethal injection protocol, ended up lasting three years through an independent audit and culminated in a new protocol. In 2022, Smith picked a similar meal to be his last. He chose a double bacon cheeseburger, a deep-dish apple pie and vanilla bean ice cream. Smith will be moved to death watch 48 hours ahead of the execution. Death watch means inmates are under strict security and control to “maintain safe and orderly operations of the prison,” according to TDOC. This story was updated to add a video. 11. I finally tried Samsung’s Project Moohan Android XR headset, and it was Google Gemini that stole the show I finally tried Samsung’s Project Moohan Android XR headset, and it was Google Gemini that stole the show Google and Samsung’s Project Moohan Android XR headset isn’t entirely new – my colleague Lance Ulanoff already broke down what we knew about it back in December 2024. But until now, no one at TechRadar had the chance to try it out. That changed shortly after Sundar Pichai stepped off the Google I/O 2025 stage. I had a brief but revealing seven-minute demo with the headset. After scanning my prescription lenses and matching them with a compatible set from Google, they were inserted into the Project Moohan headset, and I was quickly immersed in a fast-paced demonstration. You may like It wasn’t a full experience – more a quick taste of what Google’s Android XR platform is shaping up to be, and very much on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to the polished demo of the Apple Vision Pro I experienced at WWDC 2023. Project Moohan itself feels similar to the Vision Pro in many ways, though it’s clearly a bit less premium. But one aspect stood out above all: the integration of Google Gemini. “Hey Gemini, what tree am I looking at?” (Image credit: Future) Just like Gemini Live on an Android like the Pixel 9 – Google’s AI assistant takes center stage in Project Moohan. The launcher includes two rows of core Google apps – Photos, Chrome, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and more—with a dedicated icon for Gemini at the top. You select icons by pressing your thumb and forefinger together, mimicking the Apple Vision Pro’s main control. Once activated, the familiar Gemini Live bottom bar appears. Thanks to the headset’s built-in cameras, Gemini can see what you’re seeing. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. In the press lounge at the Shoreline Amphitheater, I looked at a nearby tree and asked, “Hey Gemini, what tree is this?” It quickly identified a type of sycamore and provided a few facts. The whole interaction felt smooth and surprisingly natural. You can also grant Gemini access to what’s on your screen, turning it into a hands-free controller for the XR experience. I asked it to pull up a map of Asbury Park, New Jersey, then launched into immersive view – effectively dropping into a full 3D rendering akin to Google Earth. Lowering my head gave me a clear view below, and pinching and dragging helped me navigate around. I jumped to a restaurant in Manhattan, asked Gemini to show interior photos, and followed up by requesting reviews. Gemini responded with relevant YouTube videos of the eatery. It was a compelling multi-step AI demo – and it worked impressively well. That’s not to say everything was flawless. There were a few slowdowns, but Gemini was easily the highlight of the experience. I came away wanting more time with it. Hardware impressions (Image credit: Google) Though I only wore the headset briefly, it was evident that while it shares some design cues with the Vision Pro, Project Moohan is noticeably lighter – though not as high-end in feel. After inserting the lenses, I put the headset on like a visor—the screen in front, and the back strap over my head. A dial at the rear let me tighten the fit easily. Pressing the power button on top adjusted the lenses to my eyes automatically, with an internal mechanism that subtly repositioned them within seconds. From there, I used the main control gesture – rotating my hand and tapping thumb to forefinger – to bring up the launcher. That gesture seems to be the primary interface for now. Google mentioned eye tracking will be supported, but I didn’t get to try it during this demo. Instead, I used hand tracking to navigate, which, as someone familiar with the Vision Pro, felt slightly unintuitive. I’m glad eye tracking is on the roadmap. Google also showed off a depth effect for YouTube videos that gave motion elements—like camels running or grass blowing in the wind – a slight 3D feel. However, some visual layering (like mountain peaks floating oddly ahead of clouds) didn’t quite land. The same effect was applied to still images in Google Photos, but these lacked emotional weight unless the photos were personal. Where Project Moohan stands out The standout feature so far is the tight Gemini integration. It’s not just a tool for control – it’s an AI-powered lens on the world around you, which makes the device feel genuinely useful and exciting. Importantly, Project Moohan didn’t feel burdensome to wear. While neither Google nor Samsung has confirmed its weight – and yes, there’s a corded power pack I slipped into my coat pocket – it remained comfortable during my short time with it. There’s still a lot we need to learn about the final headset. Project Moohan is expected to launch by the end of 2025, but for now, it remains a prototype. Still, if Google gets the pricing right and ensures a strong lineup of apps, games, and content, this could be a compelling debut in the XR space. Unlike Google’s earlier Android XR glasses prototype, Project Moohan feels far more tangible, with an actual launch window in sight. I briefly tried those earlier glasses, but they were more like Gemini-on-your-face in a prototype form. Project Moohan feels like it has legs. Let’s just hope it lands at the right price point. So, Secretary Noem, what is habeas corpus? Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country, suspend their rights. Let me. Let me stop you, ma’am. Habeas corpus. Excuse me. That’s incorrect. Habeas corpus. Excuse me. Habeas corpus is the legal principle that requires that the government provide a public reason for detaining and imprisoning people. So, Secretary Noem, do you support the core protection that habeas corpus provides. Yeah, I support habeas corpus. I also recognize that the president of the United States has the authority under the Constitution to decide if it should be suspended or not. It has never been, let us be clear. It has never been done. It has never been done without approval of Congress. Even Abraham Lincoln got retroactive approval from Congress. 14. Europa League final: How Bruno Fernandes became Manchester United’s heart Europa League final: How Bruno Fernandes became Manchester United’s heart A former Porto footballer, his ex-Boavista coach Novais is a cult hero in Portugal. Having crossed paths with former Portugal and Barcelona midfielder Deco early in his career at Salgueiros, he was crystal clear from the start that Fernandes could follow a similar path and reach the very top, too. Not because he had an out-of-this-world talent – that was impossible to tell at that point – but because he had the determination to work harder than anyone else. “He already had something about him…” Novais said. “You could see he wanted it so bad. “He was a kid who genuinely wanted to become a professional. He had classes on Wednesdays at the same time we trained at Boavista – around 4:30pm. So, at about 2:30pm, he’d turn up and train on his own with Petronilho, our goalkeeping coach, who’d give him a one-hour session before he went off to school. “I’d get there and ask Petronilho, ‘So, how did he do?’ And he’d go, ‘Mister, he runs, he works, he does everything. The boy just wants to train.’ He had such a passion for the game.” None of this went unnoticed as Bruno, while playing every position on the pitch except goalkeeper, began to attract interest from abroad. His elder brother Ricardo emigrated to work as a hospital assistant in England, and Fernandes could have taken the same route in 2012. He was 17 and had two offers on the table: one from Middlesbrough and another from Novara in Italy. “There was the possibility of those two teams. But things eventually moved forward with Novara; it was the one that worked out best – with the best conditions. They had an academy where I could sleep, where I had food, and where my mum felt more comfortable with me going,” Fernandes revealed. “In the end, it turned out to be the right choice.” From earning the nickname “The Maradona of Novara” to making his way to Udinese and then to Sampdoria, Fernandes established himself and fulfilled his dream of bringing his father back home from Switzerland. Even though he was already captaining Portugal’s under-21 side, he still flew under the radar among his compatriots. It was only when he joined Sporting in the summer of 2017 that he truly made a name for himself. Suddenly, everyone around was talking about the Alvalade sensation, who had finished the 2018-19 campaign with 33 goals and 18 assists, surpassing Frank Lampard’s record with Chelsea to produce the most prolific goalscoring season by a midfielder in Europe. That was when Europa League rivals Tottenham came calling and on Wednesday they will be hoping they aren’t made to regret that ‘almost’ moment back in 2019. Boxbound adds rats and earthquakes to spice up the daily grind in latest update Boxbound adds rats and earthquakes to spice up the daily grind in latest update Rats have popped up in the warehouse Earthquakes are joining the chaos too You can aim for the Hall of Fame for the ultimate bragging rights After its official launch last month, Boxbound has now released a new update to add even more chaos to the already chaotic puzzler, tasking you with a little bit of pest control this time around. Aptly titled “Rats in the Warehouse!”, the update will have you dealing with exactly that – pesky rodents running loose at your not-so-beloved place of work. In particular, the latest update (and apparently biggest one so far) throws randomised events in the mix in the form of troublesome rats, and to make matters worse, you’ll also have to deal with earthquakes every so often (becuase your job as a postal worker doesn’t seem to be difficult enough). Along with the rats come three new boxes for you to unlock as well, with a new Hall of Fame to aim for so that you can go down in history as the most epic problem solver in the history of box-themed puzzles. Now, before you go thinking you’ve got what it takes, remember this: apparently, only eight out of tens of thousands of players have actually surpassed level 1000, so getting to the top of the charts isn’t going to be a walk in the park. If you’re on the hunt for something similar, why not take a look at our list of the best puzzle games on Android to get your fill? That said, if you’re up for the challenge, you can join in on all the fun by checking out Boxbound on the App Store and on Google Play. It’s free-to-play with in-app purchases. The latest JCPenney closures, which were first announced in February, come after more than 200 U.S. locations shuttered when the retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020. The chain was later acquired by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management Inc. in December 2020. In January, JCPenney announced it had partnered with Forever 21 to create a new company called Catalyst Brands. The merger also includes Brooks Brothers, Aéropostale, Lucky Brand, Nautica and Eddie Bauer. Catalyst Brands was expected to open 1,800 store locations and hire 60,000 employees. A JCPenney spokesperson previously told USA TODAY that the store closures are not related to the Catalyst Brand merger. A Catalyst Brands spokesperson previously told USA TODAY that the umbrella company is “optimizing” its structure, resulting in the cut of about 9% of its corporate roles. Here’s which JCPenney stores are closing this year. 19. ‘No moral equivalence’ over Russia prisoner swap talk ‘No moral equivalence’ over Russia prisoner swap talk There should be no moral equivalence drawn from any prisoner swap for an *********** fighter being held in Russia, a former ambassador says. A prisoner of war swap has become more complicated after Russia sentenced *********** Oscar Jenkins to 13 years in a maximum security prison on criminal charges for fighting with the Ukrainian military as a mercenary. Foreign Minister Penny Wong branded it a “sham trial”, saying Mr Jenkins should be classified as a prisoner of war, which comes with added protections under international law. Australia’s former ambassador to Russia Peter Tesch said the sentencing showed the Kremlin was engaging in hostage diplomacy, which is when trumped-up criminal charges are leveraged to get back Russian prisoners. “This could put him outside prisoner swaps with Ukraine and at another level. It could be Russia starting to look at who they want in other prisons,” Mr Tesch told AAP. High-profile cases include Russia swapping American journalist Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan for 24 detainees across western nations. “They had very obviously done that with a view to use them as assets in an eventual negotiated exchange,” Mr Tesch said. Ukraine is handling the negotiations with Russia, with past prisoner of war swaps occurring between the two nations. But there is internal doubt over whether Russia would include Mr Jenkins in a similar deal given the added leverage of him being ***********. This was underscored by Russia sentencing him through criminal charges rather than holding him as a prisoner of war. The former envoy wouldn’t speculate on potential swaps or what should be done to get Mr Jenkins back. But he was keen to make the point there was “a false equivalence when we talk about prisoner swaps because we don’t take people political hostage”. “Any of the names that have been swirling around, like the Korolevs, they are *********** citizens who have been subject to due process with rights of appeal based on criminal charges,” Mr Tesch said. “To talk about a prisoner swap applies legal and moral equivalence and that just doesn’t apply in this case.” Married couple Kira Korolev and Igor Korolev have been charged with espionage and face 15 years behind bars. They are yet to enter pleas, but the Kremlin has criticised the charges, saying the arrests were an attempt to trump up “another wave of anti-Russian paranoia in Australia”. This was denied by the *********** government. 20. Two arrested, one wanted on arson charges in the Poconos Two arrested, one wanted on arson charges in the Poconos BARRETT TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pocono Mountain Regional Police have announced the arrest of two individuals and a third suspect still on the run after a December 2023 arson attempt. Pocono Mountain Regional Police say they were dispatched to the 100 block of Pine Knob Lane in Canadensis after the resident was woken up by a loud bang. Upon inspecting the property she found a Molotov ********* burning on her front porch, which she kicked off the porch. The press release goes on to say that the resident then found a second Molotov ********* that had shattered in her driveway but did not detonate. Investigators said they found two additional Molotov cocktails that had also failed to detonate, one by the rear of the house and the other on the side of the house. Both failed to fully ignite, according to police. Tractor trailer ****** leaves one dead on Route 11 Police noted that at the time of the incident, the resident was home with four children under the age of 13 and her 20-year-old daughter. Police say they developed a suspect, Chapel Lliev, 20 years old, of Pocono Summit. Police say during the events of the attempted arson, they were notified that East Stroudsburg University was investigating a car fire that may be connected to the arson investigation. The vehicle had windows smashed out and a Molotov ********* had set it ablaze. Police say that video surveillance was obtained that helped investigators identify Isaiah Garcia, 21 years old, from Bushkill, along with Lliev and a third unidentified suspect. Police say video surveillance allegedly showed them filling a gas container up and placing it into the trunk. This vehicle was later found crashed and abandoned that day, according to police. Within the crashed vehicle, investigators say they found a debit card for Traill Labar, 20, of White Haven, as well as a receipt for the gasoline. That vehicle was reported stolen the following day. Isaiah Garcia Traill Labar On May 16th, 2025, police arrested Isaiah Garcia and Traill Labar, who are being charged with attempted *********, several counts of arson, and related charges. Chapel Lliev is being charged with attempted *********, several counts of arson, and related charges and is still on the run. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 21. Nvidia says U.S. export controls on AI chips to China were ‘a failure’ Nvidia says U.S. export controls on AI chips to China were ‘a failure’ Jensen Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp., during the Computex conference in Taipei, Taiwan, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Annabelle Chih | Bloomberg | Getty Images U.S. export controls on artificial intelligence chips to China were “a failure”, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said on Wednesday. “All in all, the export control was a failure,” Huang said adding, “The fundamental assumptions that led to the AI diffusion rule in the beginning, in the first place, has been proven to be fundamentally flawed.” The U.S. block on sales of advanced AI chips to China has forced companies there to buy semiconductors from ******** designers such as Huawei, while also spurring China to invest aggressively to develop a supply chain that doesn’t rely on manufacturers outside the country. Huang’s comments came after China on Monday urged the United States to “immediately correct its wrongdoings” and stop “discriminatory” measures following the U.S. guidance warning companies not to use advanced computer chips from China, including Huawei’s Ascend AI chips. The U.S. action seriously undermined consensus reached at the high-level bilateral trade talks in Geneva, a statement from China’s commerce ministry said, vowing resolute measures if the U.S. continues to “substantially” harm China’s interests. Huang, speaking at the annual Computex event in Taipei, said Nvidia’s market share in China dropped to 50% from 95% at the start of former U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration. 23. Cable-tied worker focus of ‘sham’ jewellery heist trial Cable-tied worker focus of ‘sham’ jewellery heist trial The staged heist of $2.8 million in jewellery taken from a high-end city store was planned ahead of an attempted insurance fraud by an owner weighed down with debt. A jury on Wednesday was told Michel Germani staged the robbery of his store in January 2023, having owed more than $184,000 in unpaid rent to Sydney’s Hilton Hotel. The now 67-year-old formed a plan with an associate to regain some funds before the store was shuttered. A meet-up was arranged after hours with two robbers posing as customers who would then empty two safes of their valuables and remove all CCTV evidence from inside the store. A later insurance claim seeking to recoup $2,821,348 for 164 items of jewellery “stolen” was denied. The details emerged as Germani and two co-accused in the scheme Mounir Helou, 59, and Andrea David Cusumano, 59, face trial at Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court. “All was not as it seemed – the robbery was in fact a sham,” crown prosecutor Cate Dobbs told the jury on Wednesday. “It was a staged robbery, it was an inside job.” Helou and another man Shanel Tofaeono attended the store about 6.30pm claiming they wanted to examine a $150,000 tennis necklace, the jurors heard. During the 11-minute robbery, Germani and his shop attendant Lana Al-Khoury were “manhandled”, and had their hands and legs bound with cable ties. Ms Al-Khoury was also tied to a chair. A security guard who later freed her noticed the shop assistant was “very distressed and panicking,” Ms Dodd said. A key issue in the trial will be whether Ms Al-Khoury knew the robbery was staged or if prosecutors can prove beyond reasonable doubt she was an unwilling participant. “The defence will ultimately be that the Crown cannot prove that case,” Germani’s barrister Matthew Kalyk told the jury. Helou’s barrister Luke Brasch said even if the shop assistant was not involved in the scheme, his client believed at the time she was. Germani has pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated robbery and one count of detaining without consent – both of which relate to what happened to Ms Al-Khoury on the night. He has admitted staging the robbery to gain financially through the attempted insurance claim and to providing false statements to police. Helou has also admitted staging the robbery but has denied a more serious charge of aggravated robbery against Ms Al-Khoury. Both Germani and Helou are accused of committing “corporal violence” on the shop attendant. Cusumano is accused of playing a lesser role in the scheme – registering a new mobile phone bought for the sham robbery and making a call to Germani to arrange the after-hours appointment. He has pleaded not guilty to one count of committing the staged robbery to obtain a financial advantage. Ms Dodd told the jury Cusumano was also with Helou and Tofaeono when cable ties and two pairs of gloves used in the sham robbery were purchased from Bunnings. She said the evidence would show Germani had made two previous attempts to plan the robbery. When the first fell through, he contacted a friend on January 10, 2023 saying he needed two men to rob his store and he would leave $20,000 to $25,000 in the safe for them as payment. That friend agreed but called police instead. When officers attended the Hilton store on January 13, they informed Germani someone was planning an “insurance job” at his premises but did not disclose who. Despite this, he continued with his failed plan. The trial continues. Source link #Cabletied #worker #focus #sham #jewellery #heist #trial Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean? Basic violations are those considered against best practices. A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report. An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: “Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over.” An emergency order — when a restaurant is closed by the inspector — is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or ******** of the public. A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license.
